Although hydrogen has been intensively studied in its relation to steel quality, the methods of sampling and determinations are still open to question. It is true that various procedures have been proposed but actually there has not been sufficient agreement to establish a common base from which to work. As a result, it is difficult, to say the least, to correlate the reported results of some of the investigators in this field. The present symposium, premised on methods rather than effects, should prove of considerable value. For the purpose of this discussion two methods of sampling and analysis will be considered. First, sampling of molten steel in the ingot mold by use of an evacuated tube and cylinder using conventional methods of analysis for the gases collected; second, analysis by vacuum extraction involving the use of heating equipment and the determination of the amount of hydrogen evolved from solid steel samples by measurement at reduced pressures. Both methods have been used at Duquesne Steel Works and it is believed that either may be used with considerable benefit if the limitations of each method are recognized. Evacuated Tube and Cylinder Sampling devices for gases in molten steel suggested by various investigators range from very cumbersome and complicated devices to the relatively simple evacuated tube and cylinder used by Soler for deter- mining the CO content of the bath. This latter device was adopted (Fig. I) and modified to meet conditions at Duquesne Works. The principal modifications were in placing the cylinder at the side of the tube and the use of a sleeve on the immersion end of the tube. The first modification was made so that the cylinder could be readily detached and taken to the laboratory; the second, because of the difficulty encountered in obtaining an airtight seal after sampling and because of our practice of re-using the tube. Rigid control of the method of sampling and of the handling of the sample according to plan are of primary importance in hydrogen determinations. This applies to both the sampling of molten steel and the determination of the hydrogen content of cold steel samples. Except for a few preliminary samples taken from spoons, all work on molten steels using the evacuated tube was confined to the sampling and analysis of molten steel during the pour. As mentioned, uniformity of sampling was a basic consideration. As a result, every effort was made to follow definite sampling techniques and procedures. These included control of the depth below the surface from which the sample was taken, the timing between the shutoff and taking of the sample, as well as maintenance and care of the equipment. The distance below the surface at which the sample was taken was readily controlled bv means of a crosspiece and centering device attached to the tube. Since October 1965 the Josephtown Smelter of St. Joseph Lead Co. has commercially applied the Heavy Media Separation process to reclaim zinc and reject gangue from electrothermic zinc furnace residues. In addition, heavy medium is produced from the ferrosilicon which is present in the furnace residues. By way of background, the Josephtown Smelter produces zinc metal and zinc oxide by the electro- thermic process. The principal feed to the vertical shaft electric furnaces is sized sinter and coke. Temperature of the charge in the furnaces varies from roughly 900°C near the wall to 1300-1400°C in the central regions. Zinc smelting is rapid and nearly complete in the main body of the charge, but little zinc is smelted near the wall. In addition to fusing high gangue content particles, the high temperatures promote side reactions, the most important of which is reduction of iron oxide and silica to form a low grade ferrosilicon containing about 82 % Fe and 13% Si.

For twenty years it has been my work to watch and record progress in both the technical and the commercial branches of mining engineering in the wide sense in which it is represented by our Institute. While you who have been actively engaged in our profession have made history, a few of us have attempted to be the historians and have been kept keenly on the qui vive to follow the developments of so broad a field. One so employed may be pardoned if he ask you to pause for the unusual purpose of looking backward, that you may measure what you and others have done, and that the younger men may gather inspiration from the work accomplished by their elders and their predecessors. It is not so long since that the commercial management dominated our industries. Bred in the school of science, which seeks its reward in establishing the truth, our engineers were sometimes indifferent to trade conditions and requirements. Much of that feeling has disappeared, and the engineer recognizes that it is his mission to apply the achievements of science to a useful commercial end. On the other hand, business men now understand that the utilization of our natural resources and the production of articles for consumption is impossible without the intervention of the engineer. They must co-operate, unless, indeed, the two functions are combined in one man —a rare but powerful combination. Now the final measure of success of both is the cost sheet on the one hand and the expansion of markets on the other, so closely interwoven, so mutually interdependent. There is one cardinal feature, however, which characterizes the engineer's work—namely, the permanence of his achievements. Hydraulic analysis of the wellbore has become increasingly inzportant for designing cementing operations and selecting equipment, materials and techniques to complenzent modern well-c-ompletion practices. Non-Newtonian fluid technology has advanced beyond the point where former empirical methods of analysis adequately define the hydraulic system and fluid properties. In view of these factors, this paper describes a series of rheological calculations which have been found practical, through field usage, for assistance in selecting a cementing program. A relatively simple laboratory method using standard viscometric equipment is suggested for determination of the rheological properties of slurries, and clrrta are presented on some of the more common cementitrg conzposition.A. A criterion for divergence from laminar-flow characteristics has been proposed. Usefulness of the calculations is indicated by examples of cementing operations where they have been used. INTRODUCTION With the changing aspects of well-completion practices during the past few years, it has been increasingly important to have a relatively simple method of analyzing the flow conditions existing in the well during cementing operations. This is particularly true in view of the improved economics toward which most of the changes have been directed. Rheological characteristics of slurries used for cementing should be a major consideration in the trend toward smaller casing sizes, either single or multiple strings. Receiving increased attention is the practice advocated in 1948 by Howard and Clark' of attaining turbulent flow with the fluids circulated during a primary cementing operation. While there may still be a difference of opinion concerning this technique, most available information indicates that superior primary-cementing results are generally obtained when high displacement rates are employed. Fluid properties of the slurry to be used must be available, as well as calculation methods, to determine what flow rates should be attained and the probable consequences in terms of frictional pressure and horsepower utilization. It would certainly be inappropriate to attempt high displacement velocities if sufficient pressure might be developed to create lost circulation. Since cementing slurries are non-Newtonian fluids, it is not possible to define their rheological or fluid properties by the single factor of viscosity and then make calculations for the quantities just described. Because the shear stress-shear rate ratio is not constant: it becomes necessary to establish at least two parameters for adequate fluid-flow calculations. It is not the purpose of this paper to delve into the mathematical development of non-Newtonian technology, nor to discuss the arbitrary classification system under which a single fluid may resemble two or three different classes depending upon experimental conditions. Rather, the intention is to present a useful series of calculations based on a concept applicable to both Newtonian fluids and to the preponderance of non-Newtonian fluids encountered in the oil-producing industry. Development of this approach was begun some 32 years ago,' and has most recently been brought to fruition by Metzner and his co-workers at the U. of Deleware. Some non-Newtonian fluids encountered in the petroleum industry, other than cementing slurries, have also had the benefit of this method of analysis."' The two parameters required to define the fluid are usually denoted by the symbols n' and K' and, for the purposes of this discussion, are called "flow behavior index" and "consistency index", respectively. These two slurry properties permit calculation of the Reynolds' number and the "critical" velocity, or the velocity at which departure from laminar flow begins. EXPERIMENTAL DETERMINATIONS The two principal instruments used for rheological studies are the pipeline (capillary-tube) viscometer and the rotational viscometer. When conveniently possible, a capillary-tube viscometer (where the pressure drop and flow rate of the material can be measured) is the better method for rigorous determination of the flow behavior index and consistency index for non-Newtonian fluids. With pressure-drop data at various flow rates, it is then possible to prepare a logarithmic plot of shear rate as the abscissa-shear stress as the ordinate. For fluids which do not exhibit time-dependency, these data will usually produce a straight line. The flow behavior index n' represents the slope of this line, while the consistency index K' becomes the intercept of this line at unity shear rate in accordance with the mathematical derivations associated with this concept of rheology. Due to the difficulties anticipated in maintaining a uniform, pumpable cement slurry for the time interval required to obtain measurements from the pipe viscometer, the n' and K' data reported herein were obtained using a direct-indicating rotational viscometer (Fig. 2). I was asked by the chairman of one of the Sessions on Employment Problems to talk about the viewpoint of the foreign workingman. I am not a workingman. I have never done what a work-hand might call an honest day's labor; that is, I have never been in a factory or manufacturing plant or in a mine, though in truth, hard work and I are well acquainted. I was a soldier, am an engineer, have long been actively interested in the most important waterway construction in the near East, have served politics and diplomacy, written books and lectured at universities. My knowledge of the foreign workingman in this country comes from the fact that my own compatriots here at various times came to me and appealed for advice and help, and last year I was asked by the employment manager of a corporation to undertake a welfare job at one of their plants. I went out, saw the plant, talked with the superintendent and outlined certain of my ideas which he personally heartily approved, but which did not find favor with those higher up. I approach the subject of the foreign workman's point of view with the understanding that the industrial employer's effort is for the maximum of efficiency. I am conversant with labor conditions abroad both in industry and agriculture. What I have learned of industrial conditions in America as they affect the foreign immigrant has been chiefly gathered from the cases referred to of foreign workmen who from time to time have come to me with their troubles. In the course of those investigations, in order to give whatever help or advice was possible, I have been impressed with the fact that the great United States industries evidently had not yet sufficiently recognized the value of studying the conditions of the workingman in the lands of his origin across the seas. A careful study of that which could be called the moral element in connection with its foreign labor would give industry a knowledge of the man's reason for coming, what grievances he brings with him, his hopes for a future, and the peculiar character of his capacities. The employer would thereby be enabled to meet the man, to be helpful to him, to aid him and at the same time promote industrial efficiency, inasmuch as a workman who believes that he is being dealt with humanly and squarely is contented and satisfied and will give willingly, and even with pride, the best that is in him; justice and a 'air deal is all the man wants.

GOODALE, Butte, ,Mont.-While there are many points in Mr. Read's, paper which I am not prepared to discuss thoroughly, I am inclined to believe that difficulties are involved in the establishment of all employment bureau, which shall have exclusive control over the employment and discharge of workmen. I suppose you .have heard a great deal: about the so-called "rustling card? at the works of the Anaconda company. That is a very innocent sort of card, although the I. W. W. organization has made a great deal of noise about it. An applicant for a job is handed a blank on which he tells his nationality, his age, whether married or single, and the place of his last employment. The company then writes to the place where he says he was last employed to find out whether he is telling the truth; we do not ask the previous employer whether the man is blacklisted or has anything; against his record; but simply, "Was this man formerly in your employ?" A great hullabaloo has been made, about this practice by some of the men in Montana who are afraid, of their own records; but out of 53,000 applications for employment received by the Anaconda company since the employment bureau was formed, only 647 were rejected, which does

In June, 1893, while I was with the Old Dominion Copper Co. at Globe, Ariz., I received an offer to take charge, as manager, of the Baltimore Electric? Refining Co. which had recently built a plant at Baltimore, Md., having a capacity of about 1200 tons of electrolytic copper per month, using the Hayden series system. This was a very large output, for in those days the plants were small and the art was in its infancy. At the beginning of 1893 there were 11 electrolytic refineries in the United States, most of them using the multiple system. The Hayden series system was used at Baltimore and Bridgeport and the Smith series system was in operation at the Electrolytic Copper Co. at Ansonia, COM., and at the Pennsylvania Salt Co. at Philadelphia. In the latter system the plates were placed in a horizontal position, but the operating difficulties were so numerous it was soon discarded. The total production of these 11 plants in 1892 was very small; I have not been able to discover reliable figures of production. There were about thirty electrolytic copper refineries in the world that year, according to Titus Ulke, and the entire production of these

Observation of the clinkering action of coal from the Castle Gate D seam in underfeed stokers over a period of years has given rise to the present investigation of the effect of bony coal on clinkering. Some very costly examples of slagging clinkers in particular cases have been of especial interest to the authors. In such cases coal analyses and ash-softening and fluid temperatures have been found of little value. In general, it was noted that slagging mas accompanied by a somewhat higher ash content of the stoker slack, and the suspicion naturally arose that foreign matter was the troublemaker. One would naturally suspect bony coal and rock impurities because of their occurrence and prevalence within the seam and the relative absence of sulphur or other impurities in the coal mined. The test results given herein indicate that the concentration of the bony coal and rock impurities in the coal determines the clinkering tendencies of the ash during combustion. Castle Gate D Seam Extending from the Utah-Colorado line near Grand Junction, Colo., westward to Greenriver, Utah, and thence in semicircular form north and westward to Castle Gate, and from there southward to Mt. Hilgard in central Utah, is a line of nearly perpendicular cliffs, composed of interbedded massive sandstone and shales, making up the coal-bearing horizon of the Mesaverde formation of Upper Cretaceous age. The cliffs face roughly concentrically toward the south and southeast and the strata, with conformably enclosed coal beds, gently dip away from the face of the cliffs and at right angles to their front line. Back of these cliffs the mountain masses rise to an altitude of from 8000 to 10,ooo ft. above sea level. Stretching away from their foot is a great shale plain, on which the towns are situated and over which the railroad lines and highways run. The Castle Gate mines enter the coal beds at their outcrop; the workings extending within a particular coal bed away from the outcrop and under the mountain mass back from the cliff line (Fig. I). Throughout the Mesaverde formation in the Castle Gate general area, there are from two to five workable coal beds. Usually not all of these are coincidentally of workable size and merchantable quality throughout any given large tract. In the Castle Gate mine area, the base of the Mesaverde horizon and coal measures is marked by a massive, cliffmaking, gray sandstone bed 60 to 80 ft. thick. Locally this is referred to as the "Castle Gate sandstone floor." Frank R. Clark, in U. S. Geol. Survey Bull. 793, designates it as the "Aberdeen sandstone." At Castle Gate the various coal beds are designated by the letters A, B, C, etc., commencing with the lowest bed.

TIIE electron microscope techniques and their application to magnesium alloys that are to be discussed in this paper are the result of research at The Dow Chemical Co. over the past three years. The view- point underlying the work is not wholly metallurgical, but has evolved through a variety of problems related to the physics and chemistry of surfaces. It can be said that the interest and stimulus were closely associated with a desire to employ effectively the electron microscope in research concerning the properties of solids as related to their physical structure. Only a portion of this work will be described here, and, consequently, many points of interest and debate are of necessity either only briefly recognized or are completely omitted. As has been pointed out by Desch,1 a great deal of the knowledge of the structure of metals has been obtained through microscopic studies of the surfaces of metallic specimens prepared in a particular manner. This information, when added to that obtained by means of thermal, electrical, X-ray, dilatometric and other methods, has been of great value both from a theoretical and a practical view- point. With the introduction of new instruments such as the electron diffraction camera and the electron microscope, it would be expected that still more information could be obtained. These two instruments have in many instances been very effective when directed toward the investigation of metallic surfaces, provided the proper methods of surface preparation were employed. Experience shows that the problems of surface preparation greatly limit the general application of these instruments to metallographic studies. It was found necessary to discard the standard metallographic procedures in applying the electron microscope to magnesium alloys and to work out new methods, which were required to satisfy certain conditions. These methods are unique to magnesium only in the specific chemical reactions occurring during etching. The presentation of the methods and results will be ordered as follows: I. In presenting this brief historical perspective, it is not my purpose to address myself to the geophysicists, to most of whom the story is already well known. My objective is to draw the attention of those who hold the belief that geophysics is something new, typically twentieth century, to the fact that fundamentally, whether it was known by the name of geophysics or not, the science is an ancient and an honorable one. It began many centuries ago, and our modern civilization and its commerce owe a great debt to its founders, who today are likely to be overlooked and their names forgotten. The word "geophysics" means the physics of the earth, and is descriptive of a science that in many ways bears the same relationship to geology that astrophysics does to astronomy. When dealing with distant stars or deeply buried rocks, the experimenter cannot reach them to obtain samples, which can be taken to his laboratory for study. He therefore exhibits the resourcefulness of Mahomet in the mountain episode, and makes the terrestrial globe or the cosmic universe his laboratory, studying the effects of distant bodies on certain "fields of force" which come to him across interstellar space, or through the rocks that make our earth. The application of these- techniques of the physics laboratory to the study of the stars is the science of astrophysics, and to the investigation of the earth is geophysics. Yet the origin of the most valuable contribution to the world's trade and commerce ever made by geophysics remains lost in deep obscurity. Unknown even is the country wherein lived the unsung genius who invented the first geophysical instrument, the mariner's compass! Worse yet, it is not certain whether this invaluable guide of man had its beginnings in Europe or in Asia. A Chinese legend tells of the Emperor Hwang-ti, who attacked his enemy Tchi-yeou on the plains of Tehou-lou in the year 2634 B.C., whereupon the latter magically raised such a fog that the Emperor could not pursue the retreating troops. The effects of variations of carbon content on the constitution and properties of sintered WC-Co alloys were studied. The grain growth of tungsten carbide during sintering was measured and it was shown that it takes place mainly by solution and reprecipitation of the carbide in and from the binder at the sintering temperature. It was found that the decomposition of W3C03C by carburization during sintering is responsible for the formation of very large grains. THE properties of sintered WC-Co alloys are critically dependent upon their final composition and structure. Slight changes of cobalt and carbon contents and small variations of grain size result in marked changes of mechanical properties and performance of products. Previous investigators have studied the microstructure as a function of composition' and have dealt with the influence of cobalt upon properties.' The present work is concerned with the effect of carbon content upon constitution, microstructure, and grain growth during sintering, as well as upon the physical properties of sintered compacts. Phase Boundaries at the Sintering Temperature The WC-Co section through the ternary diagram W-Co-C has been studied by Wyman and Kelley,' Takeda,V andford and Trent," and Rautala and Norton." Two phases, namely WC and a cobalt-rich solid solution (P), appear in the sintered structure if the carbon composition corresponds very nearly to the theoretical carbon content of WC (6.12 pct C). But small deviations from the ideal carbon content will bring about the occurrence of either graphite or the double carbide W,Co3C (7) . The 7 phase was long believed to be metastable, this conclusion being based mainly on the work of Takeda. More recent studies have shown that it is a stable phase of the ternary system,"5 but the actual phase boundaries have not been established and there has been some discussion as to whether or not the 7 phase occurs at some stage of sintering in the fully carburized alloys." In view of this uncertainty it was thought advisable to undertake an investigation of the phases present during the sintering of WC-Co alloys. Commercially available tungsten, cobalt, and carbon powders were used in the present study. A typical analysis of impurities in a sintered compact is reported in Table I. The desired carbon compositions were attained by varying the amount of carbon added to the tungsten during carburization and controlling the composition during sintering by packing the compacts into beds of mixed alundum-carbon powders of suitably selected ratios. The alloys were sintered in a hydrogen tube furnace at 1400°C, then brought to equilibrium at the temperature under investigation and quenched in water. The high temperature phases were identified by metallographic and X-ray diffraction techniques. The samples were etched with a 10 pct solution of alkaline potassium ferricyanide. The phase boundaries, established by metallo-graphic examination, are shown in Fig. 1, which is a vertical section through the ternary diagram at 16 pct Co. The temperatures of the invariant planes, at 1298" and 1357°C were established by Rautala and Norton. The vertical section shows that the three-phase field, WC + 7 + L, extends into the two-phase field, WC + L, but does not include the stoichiometric composition of WC. C. W. MERRILL*—Mr. Hughes' paper not only is very well presented but is most timely in that it covers a subject of vital interest to the United States. Tin is one of the strategic metals which has not been found here in appreciable quantities. The total United States tin output since the first recorded production over 100 years ago would not supply current consumption for a fortnight. On the consumption side, tin is extremely important in national defense because of its use in tin plate which, in the form of tin cans, makes it possible to feed properly the armies that the United States recruits from its civilian population in emergencies. Moreover, the internal combustion engines so important in powering tanks, planes, and other war machines, require large quantities of tin alloys for bearings and for soldering. These considerations, along with the fact that Malaya, historically, has been the leading source of tin to the United States, make the kind of information that Mr. Hughes has presented so ably. a matter of vital interest. Your Chairman, Mr. Romanowitz, in his introduction, referred to the fact that I had been a member of the United States delegations to the three meetings of the International Tin Study Group. Some comments on the Group's objectives and deliberations may be of interest. When it appeared that the International Tin Committee, the prewar producer's cartel, might soon revive its operations and extend its control agreement beyond the expiration date of Dec. 31, 1946, the United States Government became interested in some kind of an international trade organization concerned with tin which would give the consumers' interest equal representation with the producers' interests. An international meeting was called in London in October 1946 to consider this problem. A method of analyzing blasting action indicates that major cost savings are possible by revising practice and bringing the classical blasting formulas up to date; difficult problems such as taconite and throw-breakup can be attacked by engineering Denonation pressure — the peak pressure developed by the explosive reaction; "shatter blasting." Average detonation pressure — the average pressure over the time the reaction continues; "heave blasting." Radial presswe — the stress in a radially expanding sphere about the detonation. Corresponds to the diminishing peak pressure. Lateral stress - the stress in a circumferential direction, induced by outward movement of the rock away from the detonation. Limiting stress or Slim— the rock property at which failure will occur in the case at hand; may be tensile or compressive strength, or combinations. Recent developments in explosives technology, following the advent of nuclear explosions, have led to a rather complete understanding of their action. A survey was made for the purpose of uncovering any knowledge which might be applicable in the mining and quarrying industries, the principal users of explosives. Although no revolutionary techniques have become apparent, much basic data pertaining to blasting — fortunately not classified — have been developed by recent research, from which a good general understanding of the process can be derived. It is hoped this explanation of the scientific principles governing explosive action, together with a proposed analysis of blasting practice, will further the development of mining engineering. NATURE OF THE REACTION: The phenomenon of explosion, termed detonation, is in reality a rather complex chemical reaction, and as such is completely explainable by physical and chemical laws. Detonation is characterized by high temperature and pressure, extreme rapidity — often being complete within one microsecond — and most importantly by formation of a shock pulse which accompanies the reaction zone. As with any chemical reaction, there is a critical value of temperature and pressure below which detonation can not occur; this is termed the "critical point". Whereas an explosive substance will decompose slowly at ordinary temperature, with the formation of gases which readily dissipate; at elevated temperature the reaction is considerably speeded. If pressure is suddenly applied at some point in an explosive medium, adiabatic compression results, and the temperature is locally raised. When the temperature becomes high enough the decomposition will be so rapid that the gaseous products do not have time to dissipate, but contribute to a further build-up of pressure. This, in turn, furthers adiabatic temperature rise over a widening area, and with any heat generated by an exothermic reaction, causes a rapid increase in temperature. Both temperature and pressure are spontaneously built up in this manner until the critical point is reached, resulting in detonation. The values of pressure and temperature necessary to create detonation are established by the unusual nature of the process. If temperature alone is raised above the critical point, without sufficient increase in pressure, deflagration or "low-order detonation" occurs. In the true, or "high-order detonation", the shock pulse resulting from the violent decomposition becomes an integral part of the reaction, and itself aids in increasing the detonation

THE general usage of engineers, manufacturers, and merchants, is gradually, but surely, fixing the answer to this question. In every country rails, boiler-plates, and machinery bars, whether hard or soft, are almost universally called steel, when they are made from cast ingots. Other names for the softer steels, such as " homogeneous metal," " Bessemer iron," " Martin iron," and the like, have failed to obtain general recognition. The meaning of the term steel, before it was enlarged to cover newly developing varieties, has been traced, by a recent writer, down through Percy, Shakspeare, and the Bible, in a most interesting manner, from an archaeological point of view. Undoubtedly, it did characterize hardness and other qualities imparted by carbon. It is within the memory of most of us, that all steels were tool steels, and that the soft, structural varieties were introduced-varieties which harden but little, which bend cold, and which, in many physical properties, are akin rather to wrought-iron than to tool-steel. But, since both the hard and the soft steels are made by the same processes, and have their great, distinguishing structural feature in common, viz., homogeneity resulting from fluidity, it has come to pass, despite every other proposed nomenclature, that all the compounds of iron which have been cast in malleable masses, are called steel, the term wrought-iron being still confined to malleable iron made from pasty masses, and hence laminated in structure. No inconvenience has been found, so far, in distinguishing between the more or less carburized products, in general, by the terms " high-steel," " low-steel," " tool-steel," etc., and, in particular, by prefixing the percentage of carbon and other ingredients, to the terra steel. Steels which contain distinguishing ingredients other than carbon, are called "chrome-steel," " titanium-steel," and the like, just as variously compounded bronzes are called "phosphor bronze," "alu¬minium bronze," etc. Thus the combination of several words or symbols, and figures, may completely disclose the characters of the metal, in terms that are subject to no misunderstanding. But inasmuch as several high metallurgical authorities and clever writers have of late proposed to disturb this natural and somewhat settled nomenclature, it seems important to consider the claims of the various classifications. Some preliminary results are given on the use of radioactive tracers for implementing the mechanistic approach to flotation. The process studied is an industrial one for the cleaning of sand for the production of glass. The radioactive tracers employed are those produced from intrinsic elements in the sand by neutron irradiation in a nuclear reactor. The results indicate that the technique will be useful for the determination of flotation simulation mechanistic model parameters on operating industrial processes without interruption of their normal operation.

The El Soldado copper mineralization occurs as relatively high-grade irregular ore bodies with assay contacts and with frequent inclusions of barren rock. The sampling methods must be timely for production grade control purposes, as well as accurate and inexpensive. Sampling techniques evolved from sampling dump cars at the haulage level to sampling Scooptrams at the loading pockets. These methods were abandoned in favor of sampling production blastholes. Several sampling alternatives are discussed. These involve the selection of optimum volumes and sampling frequencies while taking into consideration geological parameters and statistical analyses of sampling data.

When the component grains of .ferritic hicrystals of an Fe-1.55 pct Si alloy are disoriented through an angle "6 " about a conzmon [ll0] axis, the tendency for preferential growth of austenite crystals along the grain boundary during transformation at elevated temperatures is small when 11 deg, but increases rapidly at larger angles. This type of orientation-dependence indicates that grain boundary diffdsion promotes preferential growth along large-angle boundaries. Morphological differences between austenite crystals formed at small-angle [1101 and [loo] boundaries suggest that precipitate morphology can be dependent on the dislocation structure of the boundary. ThE morphology of precipitate crystals nucleated at a grain boundary can be significantly affected by the structure of the boundary.' The limited amount of experimental evidence available in the literature indicates that the morphological effects of boundaries made up of arrays of dislocations, such as subbound-aries and small-angle grain boundaries, are different from those of boundaries having essentially disordered structures, i.e., large-angle grain boundaries. On the basis of indirect evidence, it has been concluded that large-angle grain boundaries give rise to the formation of grain boundary allotriomorphs (crystals which nucleate at grain boundaries, and grow preferentially and more or less smoothly along them)2 in the proeutectoid ferrite and the proeutec-toid cementite reactions in plain-carbon steels, and apparently also in many non-ferrous alloys.' At small-angle grain boundaries in a plain carbon steel, on the other hand, ferrite crystals were found to take the form of primary side plates. Similarly, Guinie, loys. Primary sideplates formed at a subboundary with a constant orientation tend to be parallel to only one, or occasionally two matrix habit planes, and a marked change in the orientation of the boundary is accompanied by a change in the habit plane. Previous studies on the morphological effects of grain boundary structure were performed on poly-crystalline aggregates. Information on the disorien-tation of the pairs of grains forming the boundaries at which the various morphologies appeared in these specimens was largely either qualitative or semi-quantitative. Precipitate morphologies accordingly could not be accurately and systematically correlated with grain boundary structure, and thus theories which have been proposed for the various morphological effects could not be satisfactorily tested. This investigation was undertaken in an attempt to remedy these deficiencies by studying the morphological effects of grain boundary structure with a method in which the boundaries are formed by matrix grains whose disorientations are known and controlled with reasonable accuracy. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The crystallographic requirements of this study were fulfilled by means of oriented bicrystals of silicon-iron. Disorientation of the component ferrite crystals was carried out about common, major crystallographic axes through angles ranging from 1/2 to 44 deg. The silicon content was low enough SO that the bicrystals could be partially transformed to austenite by heating to elevated temperatures. The silicon-iron used had the following initial composition: 1.55 pct Si, 0.04 pct C, 0.0031 pct N, 0.17 pct Mn, 0.020 pct S, and 0.002 pct P. The alloy was obtained in the form of 0.036-in. sheet. The procedures employed to prepare seed crystals in strips of this sheet, to reorient the seeds, and to grow them into bicrystals are essentially those described by Dunn and Nonken and aynes." The characteristics of the bicrystals are given in Table I. The "bicrystal type" indicates the crystallographic plane parallel to the broad faces of the strip in both grains and the crystallographic direction which was parallel to the long edges of the strip in both grains prior to disorientation. The angular disorientation of the grains, 8, which was performed about the direction normal to the plane of the broad faces of the strip, was measured between the [ 00l] directions.
