Electricity, as normally thought of by a layman's definition, is a man- made force that has no color, no odor, is not visible, cannot be heard, yet man can control it and make it perform his work for him. A person dare not cheat on it, for it then will master him. It has laws, rules, and regulations that must be strictly adhered to if it is to perform in the safest, most reliable, and economical manner. In the early days of coal mining the power source was man himself. Later man employed steam and compressed air to reduce his muscle power requirements needed in the extraction of coal. By the turn of the 20th century, electricity had become the most common source of power for the coal industry. Steam and compressed air are still found in use in isolated cases today for specific applications; however, they are rapidly being replaced by electricity. Electrical laws and regulations are quite extensive and somewhat complex for the proper generation and use of electricity. Man-made laws, rules, and regulations for the care and handling of electricity, designed for man's safety, are rigidly enforced by Mine Safety and Health Ad- ministration (MSHA), as well as the various state departments of mines. BACKGROUND Until recent years most underground coal mines used direct current exclusively for all movable and for some stationary equipment. Exceptions were for permanent pumps, tipple, fan, and outside buildings where alternating current was normally employed. However, over 60 years ago there were mines with dual systems. Alternating current was used for cutting machines, drills, and pumps ; direct current for locomotives. There were no other machines as these were hand-loading mines. REORGANIZING AMERICAN ENGINEERS There are in America approximately 500 engineers' organizations of various kinds, and yet it is estimated in many communities that 30 to 50. per cent. of the resident engineers are not members of any society of engineers. There is no enumeration of the engineers of the country, but estimates range from 100,000 to 300,000, the latter number probably including assistants, such as instrumentmen, draftsmen and inspectors, together with professional engineers. These local, state, regional and national organizations are for the most part independent and have no means for cooperation. Steps toward the improvement of these conditions are being taken in a number of localities and have already been taken in others. Many engineers are giving the matter serious attention. American Society of Civil-Engineers took an important action at the June meeting of its Board of Direction, by, authorizing the creation of a Committee on Development of Am. Soc. C. E. This action is now well known to all representatives on Engineering Council. Other Founder Societies axe reported to be considering similar action. Engineering Foundation, at its meeting on Sept. 12, adopted the following resolutions: Survey of Engineering Organizations BE IT RESOLVED: that the Engineering. Foundation is prepared, the four Founder Societies concurring, to devote its strength and its' income, so far as this may he required, to a study of existing engineering organizations, and from information thus developed to formulate a series of constructive recommendations which may he serviceable in guiding the further development of local and national engineering organizations in their relations to the profession of engineering, to the public and to each other, to the end that a foundation may he laid upon which to establish a broadly planned procedure, which, while recognizing and preserving all that has already been accomplished, shall increase the power of American engineers in upbuilding their profession and in the service they render to society; and RESOLVED: that in accepting the responsibility for such an undertaking, it will be the purpose of the Engineering Foundation to organize the proposed research along the broadest possible lines, to call to its aid highly qualified experts, and to avail itself of the help of agencies which may be willing to cooperate; and RESOLVED: that in proposing this research the Engineering Foundation has no desire or purpose to intrude upon the domain of individual organizations; that it does not propose to control the action of any individual or organization; nor to ask the acceptance of its conclusions; but that its purpose shall he to develop a possible procedure, or a series of such procedures, of such evident, merit that they will appeal to those who are likely to be most interested; it will do this in the belief that in so far as its work may justify the confidence of engineers and of engineering organizations, it will bear its own fruitage.

IN addition to the humanitarian aspects of a dust-control program, certain economic benefits are becoming more fully recognized and now furnish a greater incentive to the mill operator to eliminate the dust from his plant. It is well known that a favorable working environment promotes increased efficiency and improves the morale of employees, with a consequent decrease in labor turnover rates. One progressive mining company1 estimates its direct and indirect labor turnover costs at from $40 to $50 per man; for skilled labor, such as machine operators, the cost may approach $100 per man. While these figures may not be typical of every plant, they do indicate a potential savings in operating costs. Dust signifies waste; its elimination decreases maintenance costs of mechanical and electrical equipment; its recovery is often justified from the standpoint of values contained in the collected material, although in large-scale milling operations handling low-grade ore this may not be an important factor. Perhaps the most significant trend in industrial sanitation is that dust-control equipment and procedures are becoming recognized as integral parts of the mill flowsheet. Exhaust ventilating systems are now afforded equal care in design and maintenance to that given other machinery more closely related to the process. METHODS OF DUST CONTROL "Dust control" is a general term descriptive of a number of methods used singly or together to prevent particulate atmospheric contamination. These methods are, in order of their desirability, as follows: I. Change of process. 2. Isolation of process. 3. Wet methods. 4. Ventilation. a. Local exhaust ventilation. b. General ventilation. 5. Personal respiratory protection. In ore-concentration plants it is seldom practical to change a process to eliminate the dust it creates It is possible in some cases to isolate a particular dust-producing operation from the rest of the plant, provided that constant attention on the part of the operators is not required. Frequently water is used in fine crushing and fine grinding, primarily to facilitate the processing of the ore and incidentally to allay the dust produced. Wet methods, however, are not feasible in coarse and secondary crushing operations, because of the relatively great volume of water required in instantly wetting each freshly fractured rock surface. Such quantities of water would entail conveying and storage difficulties. Local exhaust ventilation is the most effective and most commonly applied control measure, wherein directional air currents through the zone of dust production draw the contaminants into a duct system. Unfortunately, only a limited amount of reliable information on exhaust ventilation is available.2-5 Of necessity these publications are rather general, being primarily concerned with engineering fundamentals. THE CHAIRMAN.-Thank you. Since the papers are rather closely related, I think rather than taking them one at a time we will entertain discussion on any of these problems at this time. W. A. REICH.*-We, of course, quite a while ago got the yellow light that Mr. Cole spoke of, and like everyone else immediately started to study silicon bronzes and brasses. We were interested in the silicon bronzes and brasses because we felt that in order to replace gun metal which makes up a large part of our use we needed something with an elastic limit at least equal to that of gun metal. That means at least 12,000 lb. per sq. in. This study was aimed only at tin conservation. Then we dropped the study of silicon bronzes because high purity copper which is needed in their manufacture became a scarce item. To make a long story short we have recommended to our designing engineers that they use 85-5-5-5 wherever possible because 85-5-5-5 we understand can be made entirely from scrap with little or no tin addition. 85-5-5-5 has a lower elastic limit than 88-8-4, so we felt that we would need another substitute material, a structural alloy with an elastic limit equal to that of 88-8-4, and we immediately turned to the manganese bronze type of alloy. The poor foundry properties of standard manganese bronzes were mentioned by Mr. Thieme and since we feel that high zinc content is largely responsible for this difficulty, our development is directed along the lines of uncovering a material with a lower zinc content and which gains its elastic strength from the addition of other alloying elements, such as, aluminum, manganese and iron. It must be possible to make this alloy entirely from scrap with no additions of scarce high purity material. I would appreciate an expression of opinion on how low we can go in zinc content with this type of alloy without seriously impairing the availability, and how high we can go in aluminum content without making use of aluminum restricted for that use. We assume that the maximum lead content must be placed at 1 ½ per cent to insure good availability and we feel that about I per cent of tin in the alloy would improve salt water corrosion resistance similar to the effect of tin in Admiralty Metal. Has anyone here had experience with the effect of tin and lead on the weldability of such an alloy? C. S. COLE.-What percentage of lead and tin? W. A. REICH.-About 1 per cent of lead and 1 per cent of tin. We are studying the weldability of the alloy but perhaps someone already has the answer. (Pause, no answer) The claim has been made that 1 per cent of lead can be added to certain silicon bronzes without impairing their properties. A silicon bronze with a low zinc content requires high purity copper in its manufacture but if say the 15 per cent zinc, 44 silicon balance copper alloy could be made, with a I per cent lead content, some quantity could be made from scrap. Increases in the price of gold starting about six years ago, and rapid fluctuations since then, have created a substantial popular interest in the noble metal. Gold prospecting had been at a low ebb since the end of World War II in most of the United States, except for a flurry of activity in Nevada after the Carlin and Cortez discoveries. The last few years, however, have seen a great awakening of interest in gold exploration as well as an opportunity for education for many explorationists in the geology and other vagaries of gold deposits. The writers have participated over the last few years in a search for gold deposits throughout the United States. This search was greatly influenced by the geologic studies of Dr. William Spence at the Haile gold mine in South Carolina, as reported in a companion paper. Spence's studies resulted in definition of a geologic model that has proven useful in a number of other geologic environments in the United States. These programs were all carried out under the auspices of Cyprus Mines Corp. and permission by Cyprus to present these results is gratefully acknowledged. The writers, however, reserve for themselves all responsibility for the results and conclusions. The exploration program to be described began in the southeastern United States. Spence's studies provided a reasonable basis for interpreting and understanding the geology of the Haile deposit, and also provided a means for predicting additional occurrences. This concept was then expanded to other gold occurrences in the Piedmont, and became an effective tool for evaluating other prospects. Finally, it became evident that the concept could be applied in some western gold districts. The following discussion will then include descriptions of other Piedmont examples and a few western districts that also appear to fit the pattern.

A LACK of experimental data illustrating the effect of composition, particularly in respect to impurities, on the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of aluminum-alloy die castings induced the authors and their associates to undertake a limited study of these relations. A number of commercial alloys .and several experimental variations of a commercial alloy were used for the investigation. Mechanical property, growth, steam, paraffin, salt spray and atmospheric exposure tests were employed. This paper deals with the more accelerated tests and the results they have produced. It is concluded that a high-silicon alloy with all impurities except iron strictly limited to small amounts will develop an excellent resistance to corrosion and retain satisfactory mechanical properties and casting characteristics. As a direct result of this investiga-tion an alloy of this character with superior corrosion resistance is now available commercially. In general, copper increases the strength and decreases the elongation and corrosion resistance. Tin reduces the mechanical properties and the resistance to corrosion. Iron reduces the elongation and, if excessively high, may adversely affect the tensile strength. Even excessively high iron contents do not affect the corrosion resistance, which is fortunate for the die caster as it is this element that is the most difficult to control. Nickel and zinc in limited amounts do not seem to affect the properties or corrosion resistance of at least the high-silicon alloy. Growth tests have confirmed the previous common belief that dimensional changes under either dry or wet conditions at 100° C. are too small to be of practical importance.

Abrasives include the substances, natural or artificial, that are used to grind, polish, abrade, scour, clean, or otherwise remove solid material, usually by rubbing action but also by impact (pressure blasting for example). They do not include abrasive tools, for instance, lathe tools and files-or polishing agents such as waxes, which act by filling pores. Detergents and cleaners whose action is chemical rather than physical are omitted although some chemical-action polishes and cleaners may also contain solid abrasives, for example, many automobile and metal polishes. General Considerations The most important physical properties of materials that qualify them for use as abrasives are hardness, toughness (or brittleness), grain shape and size, character of fracture or cleavage, purity or uniformity. For making bonded abrasive products such as grinding wheels, additional important factors are stability under high heat and bonding characteristics of grain surfaces. The economic factors of cost and availability are always important. No one single property is paramount for any use. For some uses extreme hardness and toughness are needed, as in diamonds for drill bits; for others, the factors of greatest importance are hardness and ability to break down slowly under use, to develop fresh cutting edges when grains become worn-for example: in garnet for sandpaper neither highly cleavable or friable grains nor extremely tough grains are wanted. For still other uses, great hardness is objectionable; for example, abrasives for dentifrices and for glass-cleaning soaps. For the most efficient use in the more critical applications, the different types of abrasives are rarely completely interchangeable; thus, while crushed quartz and garnet are both used in sandpaper, the papers are not at all interchangeable in their use applications. In the last analysis, the choice of a high grade abrasive depends upon the quality and quantity of work done by the abrasive per unit of cost. Initial cost of an artificial abrasive may be much greater than that of a natural abrasive but the artificial abrasive may do so much better work than the natural one, and do it so much faster that the ultimate cost will be less. It is for this reason that artificial abrasives have largely replaced natural abrasives. Abrasive Value Mineralogical hardness or "scratch" hardness as expressed in Mohs' scale is an important property in evaluating abrasive materials, but, as noted before, it is only one of several essential properties. The mineral hardness of pure crystal almandite garnet is about 7.5, but if the crystal is crossed by incipient fracture planes, or if it contains inclusions of other minerals, the apparent or useful hardness may be much lower. While the quartz grains in a sandstone have a hardness of 7, the bond holding the grains together may be so weak that the stone is valueless as a commercial abrasive. In artificially bonded wheels and stones, the hardness, strength, and character of the bond are fully as important as the hardness of the abrasive grains. Thus, in an overall consideration of abrasive hardness of loose abrasive grains, both "scratch" hardness and toughness must be considered. In naturally or artificially bonded abrasive stones, bond characteristics are a third factor, which is most important. The problem of abrasive hardness is further complicated by the inadequacies of methods of testing hardness and of expressing relative values. THE study of earthquakes long ago developed the fact that by studying the travel times of the various groups of waves from the same earthquake, as received on seismographs at varying distances, major discon-tinuities in the earth's crust could be reasonably well defined. Using this original discovery, and adapting the mathematical methods originally devised in seis-mology for determining the depth below the surface at which such discontinuities occur, other investigators were able to develop a new branch of seismology which promises to be extremely useful in extending the boun-daries of our information oil local conditions below the earth's surface. As an outstanding example of the applications of this work, we have the so-called "seismo-graph" exploration of the Gulf Coastal region, which has resulted in the discovery of a large number of salt domes, from many of which oil fields may be developed. The original seismological investigations, from which different major discontinuities in the earth's crust were deduced, as well as these later successful experiments in finding salt-dome structures, involve relatively simple problems. In each case we are dealing with surface materials in which elastic waves will be propagated with a fairly definite velocity. Under this material we have something very different, in which the elastic waves will be propagated with a much higher velocity. The transition from one medium to another is like-wise relatively abrupt. For example, in. the Gulf Coastal region the sedimentary formations have a velocity of 6000 or 7000 ft. per sec., while the velocity of elastic waves in the cap rock of a salt dome" may exceed 15,000 ft. per sec. Under such conditions, de-lineation of the formation is a relatively simple matter, and, furthermore, there is very little opportunity for ambiguous results.
