The Wyoming Minerals - Conoco Crownpoint Joint Venture represents the first time that big hole drilling has been exclusively used to develop a privately financed mine. Three shafts, one ten feet in diameter and two six feet in diameter, have been successfully drilled to depths of 2243', 2188' and 2188' respectively and lined with hydrostatic designed steel casing. The largest shaft is to be used to as a development shaft to handle muck and water from enlargement and station excavation of the other two shafts. A reverse fluid air assist circulation system with potassium base mud was used during drilling. The mud was cleaned by settling in steel lined tanks with assistance from cyclone type sand separators. Deviation was monitored with wireline gyroscopic surveying instruments at 30 foot intervals. Horizontal departure did not exceed 16 inches off perpendicular. Casing was designed to withstand full hydrostatic pressures with a 1.5 safety factor for the large shaft and 1.25 safety factor for the two smaller shafts. All casing welds were x-rayed prior to lowering the casing into the hole. Cementing the annular space completed the operation. The total time to mobilize, drill and move off the three shafts was 363 days. The drilling operation was completed ahead of schedule and under budget.

The south border of Espirito Santo begins about 400 km. north of Rio de Janeiro and extends along the Atlantic Coast northward some 325 km. and inland 100 to 150 km. The area under consideration, where quartz crystal of strategic grades has been mined, extends from 19º to 21º and 30º south latitude; and from 40º to 41º and 30º west longitude. This includes the central part of Espirito santo, chiefly south of the Rio Doce from the Atlantic ocean, and west across the border into Minas Gerais near the town of Aimores, in the municipalities of Aimores, Minas Gerais; Baixo Guandu, Santa Teresa, Santa Leopoldina, Colatina, Joao Neiva, Fundao and Domingo Mar-tines, Espirito Santo (Fig. I). During 1943 and the first half of 1944, this region accounted for approximately 3 to 5 per cent of the quartz crystal produced in Brazil. Shipments of crystal have been made chiefly by rail to Rio de Janeiro. This region is serviced by the E. F. Minas-Vitoria and E. F. Leopoldina to Rio de Janeiro through vitoria; and by the E. F. Minas-Vitoria and E. F. Centra] do Brasil through Bello Horizonte, Minas Gerais to Rio de Janeiro. The major deposits are accessible from the railheads by dirt roads, some being 5 to 30 km. off the road, reached by trail. In 1943 and the first half of 1944, the bulk of the production was from inter- mountain marshes and adjoining hillside alluvial placer deposits in the zone surrounding the town of Santa Teresa. Most of these deposits were formed from the erosion of pegmatite~, quartz veins and pockets in the gneiss, with minor quantities produced from miarolitic cavity fillings in the granitic rock. Early Operations Mining of quartz crystal in this region began in 1928 and has been stimulated by the market demand for military uses. Before 1936 little attention was given to it, either in Espirito Santo or eastern Minas Gerais. From 1936 to 1941 the Japanese sent agents to various points of production or potential production to acquire quartz through purchase. They bought crysta1 as small as 10 grams. Since '94' only the United States and Great Britain have received quartz from Brazil. The United States purchases crystals of 100 grams and larger for strategic purposes. The first known discoveries were made either in the municipalities of Aimores, Minas Gerais, or in Baixo Guandu, 01 Domingos Martines, Espirito Santo. Marketable quartz crysta1 was first found either in the massive quartz replacement veins of the Victor Hugo mine in the municipality of Domingo Martines, or in the large 'ores of quartz in the pegmatites near Baixo Guandu, extending into Minas Gerais. Cesium metal isn't on the government's list of priority materials for stockpiling, but it may be getting a big lift in that direction. Both the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) have committed themselves to a long-range research program the outcome of which may boost annual domestic production to 37,000 lb by the year 2000. This would represent a sixfold increase in cesium consumption over the figures reported in 1968. To accomplish this dramatic increase, there must he some equally dramatic breakthroughs. Recent research efforts designed to shake the metal from its lethargic status in world markets have been concentrated in the areas of ion propulsion, thermionic power conversion and magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) power generation. The activities in these areas, all of which attempt to make use of cesium's unique properties, may lead to a practical method for converting nuclear energy into electricity and a cheaper and more effective alternative to liquid propellants used in long-range space flights.

In experiments for the production of steel the principal problem has always been the introduction into, or removal from, the iron of a definite quantity of carbon. Although the solution of this problem had engaged a more or less blindly and empirically directed effort for a long time, it was only with the development of analytical chemistry that the rôle which carbon plays in the constitution of steel was disclosed in its full significance, and that many of the problems confronting the steel-maker were thereby more clearly defined than before. For a long time, and to a certain extent even to this day, the percentage of carbon in steel has been the controlling means of deter mining its quality and hardness. In many cases the percentage of carbon alone has been relied on for judging large consignments, such as the large deliveries of wire-billets and blooms to America during the past twenty years; and though to-day the influences of the other constituents are recognized and many other considerations are taken into account, and though, moreover, some special steels, such as the Hadfield manganese steel, apparently dispense to a certain extent with the assistance of the carbon, yet fix our Bessemer, Thomas, Siemens and crucible steel the carbon still remains one of the most important constituents, and I venture to say it is indispensable. In order to produce in the Bessemer converter a steel of a certain required percentage of carbon, two methods, as is well known, present themselves. By the one the decarburization process is stopped when the desired carbon limit in the bath has been reached ; by the other the bath is completely decarburizecl, and then a calculated amount of carbon added in the form of spiegel, ferro manganese, etc. In Germany the latter method only was adopted, and it was retained when the Thomas-Gilchrist process for the production of low-Phosphorus steel from high-phosphorus iron eame into use, since from the nature of the new process complete decarburization is neces-

It is well known that if copper that has been severely cold-worked by rolling (70-98 pct) is heated to high temperatures a small number of large grains are formed at the expense of the fine grained structure that appears upon primary recrystallization. Dahl and Pawlek,' Cook and Mac-Quarie,2 Ward,3 and Boas and Bowles4 have studied this phenomenon in copper. It has been reported as taking place with measurable velocities in the temperature range 700-1080". Boas and Bowles have reported that the time necessary for the transformation is of the order of days at 700°C. According to Ward3 the number of secondary grains which appear in OFHC copper decrease with increasing perfection of cubical alignment after primary recrystallization; also the perfection of cubical alignment increases with decreasing grain size prior to the final reduction. In this investigation two heats, A and B, of especially high purity copper (99.999 pct) supplied by the American Smelting and Refining Co., were used. The behavior of samples prepared from the two heats was qualitatively very similar providing that the grain sizes established prior to the final reduction were about the same. We observed that in specimens prepared from bars which were relatively coarse grained prior to final reduction secondary recrystallization took place at a rapid rate at temperatures as low as 500°C. This is about 200-300°C lower than the temperature necessary to obtain fairly rapid transformation in OFHC copper. A 0.22 in. thick rectangular bar of lot B was cold-reduced 60 pct by straight rolling and given a penultimate annealing treatment at 250°C. In order to determine copper resource data and production costs for major market economy mines and deposits, the Bureau of Mines has performed detailed engineering and economic analyses on 271 of the world's most significant copper deposits. At the demonstrated resource level, copper potentially recoverable from these deposits is estimated to be 325 million metric tons, 180 million tons of which would be from Pacific Rim countries. Chile has the largest known copper resources of any country and accounts for nearly 45 percent of the copper avail- able from Pacific Rim countries. At $1.00 per pound, in January 1981 dollars, an estimated 80 million metric tons of copper are potentially economically recoverable from Pacific Rim deposits. At this same price, analyses indicate that these deposits could economically produce about 2 million metric tons of copper per year. Sensitivity analyses reveal that if operating costs were to decrease 25 percent, with copper at a price of $1.00 per pound, total copper economically recoverable from Pacific Rim countries could increase by about 10 percent; a 25 percent increase in operating costs could lower economically recoverable copper by 50 percent. Analyses also indicate that byproduct prices are important. If byproduct revenues increased 25 percent, at a copper price of $1.00 per pound, an additional 2 million metric tons of copper could be recovered; if byproduct revenues decrease 25 percent, about 5 million metric tons less of copper metal would be available. Since the January 1981 date of this study, inflation and decreases in copper and byproduct prices have greatly affected the profitability of the world copper industry. Many producing mines have curtailed or suspended production, and development of many non- producing deposits has been postponed.

The construction and operation of a simple and accurate vacuum-fusion apparatus are described in detail. Absolute accuracy of the oxygen analysis has been determined by the reduction of oxides weighed to 20.01 mg. The Bureau of Standards steel samples have been analyzed repeatedly, and their inadequacy for the acceptable range of oxygen is presented. The limits of interference of manganese, aluminum, and titanium, and the effects of tin and water-cooling of the furnace tube have been investigated in detail. ANALYSIS by the vacuum-fusion method consists of melting a sample in a degassed graphite crucible under high vacuum and extracting oxygen as carbon monoxide, and nitrogen and hydrogen as gaseous elements. The resulting gas mixture is analyzed for its constituents, from which oxygen, nitrogen, and frequently hydrogen may be determined within 1/2 hr or less. The history and summary of methods1-4 and extensive reviews of literature'.' for the determination of gases in metals have been published in detail. The foundation of the modern vacuum-fusion method of analysis was laid by Jordan and Eckman,11 and Oberhoffer and his associates.1, 10 Diergarten,11, 12 Meyer,13 Thanheiser et al.,14, 15 Ericson and Benedicks,16 Ziegler,17, 18 Sloman,16-23 Thompson et al.,24 and later many others contributed to the improvement, accuracy, and limitations of the method. In some investigations, however, the limitations of the procedure and the errors involved in the analysis require further critical examination and evaluation. In many apparatuses, lunnecessarily complicated and cumbersome features and elaborate precautionary measures do not have conclusive advantages. The purpose of this invest:igation was, therefore, a) to construct a very simple and accurate apparatus, b) to determine the absolute accuracy of results, c) to establish the limits of interference of manganese. aluminum, and titanium, d) to reexamine critically the reduction and recovery of oxygen from oxide powders of various sizes, and e) to evaluate critically the eight steels of the Bureau of Standards."' Apparatus The apparatus used in this investigation is shown in Fig. 1. It has been used for over three years, during which several modifications were made. A brief description of the apparatus is as follows. The transparent silica or Vycor tube, E, is joined to the Pyrex head, B, by mean of a face to face ground joint sealed with mercury. A similarly sealed ball and socket joint would also have been satisfactory. A standard tapered ground joint, successfully used by some investigators, was tried, but in the absence of grease or vacuum cement it was very difficult to disassemble the joint. The graphite crucible, G, 15/16 or l 1/8 in. OD, 2 1/2 or 3 in. high, 1/10 in. wall, shown enlarged in Fig. 3a, is made from the rods containing less than 0.08 pet ash. Two baffles, overlapping sufficiently to prevent spattering, are inserted in two opposite slots cut on a band saw. Two small holes in the baffles permit the temperature measurement of the melt. A second type of crucible, Fig. 2, G, shown enlarged in Fig. 3b, is also satisfactory, though not as convenient as the crucible shown in Fig. 3a. Somewhat similar but more elaborate crucibles with baffles were first tried by Ericson and Benedicks,'" but were abandoned in favor of a crucible with a stopper and a peripheral graphite powder filter. Various versions of their crucible with a stopper have later been used by other analysts, 10-27, 27-30 The crucible is packed directly in E, Figs. 1 and 2, with —35 + 48 graphite powder for shielding and insulation. A minimum layer of 7 mm of powder is necessary for keeping E cool and minimizing the blank. The first use of graphite powder was made by Sloman,10-23 Who found that —200 mesh was the most satisfactory. The author tried various size powders from +20 to —100 mesh and found that a) particles of 28 mesh or larger were not sufficiently insulating and were heated by the induction current, b) the powder finer than 60 mesh packed too much and did not readily permit the escape of gases even when the crucible was heated very slowly; hence, the powder was occasionally blown out of the side in the crucible and in the mercury pump. $1. Introduction.—Any given piece of metal is made up of a very great number of grains, usually microscopic, each of which is a perfect crystal save only in outward form, with cleavage planes of low cohesion, geometrically arranged quite as in fie familiar non-metallic crystals. The plastic deformation of such a mass occurs chiefly through the slipping of the crystalline blocks of which each grain is composed along these cleavage planes, causing steps called slip bands to form on a previously polished surface. In this slip, the metal immediately adjoining each of the cleavage planes along which the slip takes place is thought to pass extremely rapidly through a very mobile state into the amorphous state, in which it is harder than the remaining still crystalline metal between the amorphous layers thus formed along the slip planes. Whether the slip planes below the surface in ferrite can be detected by cutting, polishing, and etching sections is in dispute; but if this detection is possible at all, it is usually made impossible by heating the metal even gently. In short, the change along the slip planes does not persist through heating, and it is thought not to persist through time even at the room temperature, nearly all the amorphous metal recrystallizing. The network in Fig. 22 and the parallel N.-70-E. lines in Fig. 21 are slip bands in copper. When plastically deformed metal is heated, certain parts of certain grains may twin, that is, their component crystalline units may rotate into a position, or more exactly into an orientation, symmetrical with the initial orientation and hence with that of the remainder of that grain. As seen in a microsection of a metal the twinned areas usually have parallel sides. The existence of twinning is recognized in metallic sections either by the presence of such parallel-sided areas differing in brightness from the adjoining metal, especially when seen under oblique light after etching, or more surely by the zigzagging of the slip bands which form when twinned metal is itself deformed again. Hence the usual procedure in developing twins is to deform plastically so as to cause the twinning tendency; to heat so as to allow the tendency to assert

EXTENSIVE Sampling of coal in Illinois during the past 10 or 12 years by the State Geological Survey, in cooperation with various organizations, such as the U. S. Bureau of Mines, the University of Illinois, and the Illinois Cooperative Mining Investigations, has made possible the delineation of two areas of low-sulfur coal in the southern part of Illinois. The sulfur content is less than 1.25 per cent., so that, if otherwise suitable, these coals can be employed for metallurgical uses and for the manufacture of water-gas and retort gas. One of these areas is small and lies in Jack-son County, near Murphysboro, the other is much larger and includes a large part of the famous Franklin County field. A small area of No. 2, or Murphysboro, coal has been worked for many years near the town of Murphysboro, Jackson County, Ill. In two mines, at least, the coal has a sulfur content of less than 1.25 per cent. It is doubtful, however, whether this field will ever be a source of large tonnage as the total area underlain by low-sulfur coal in workable thickness is probably less than 15 sq. mi. (24.14 sq. km.), and a large part of it has already been worked out. The location of the area of low-sulfur coal in the Franklin County field is shown in the accompanying map. The small area underlain by the Murphysboro low-sulfur coal is shown near the town of that name in the central part of Jackson County. The larger area lies in the west side of Franklin County, extending also about 6 mi. (9.65 km.) south into Williamson County, about 4 mi. (6.43 km.) west into northern Jackson and western Perry County, and northward an undetermined distance into Jefferson County. All but the northern limit of the area is fairly well defined by sampling in numerous mines. The inner cross-lined area is underlain by coal having less than 1 per cent. sulfur, the outer boundary surrounding the area Underlain by coal having less than 1.25 per cent, sulfur.

It is known from the early work of Bridgman that the two lowest-pressure transitions (I-II and II-III) are accompanied by substantial and abrupt changes in resistivity and Volume. However, unlike the temperature -induced allotropic transformations observed in such elements as lithium, cobalt, tin, and so forth, there is little actually known about many of the characteristics of the pressure-in&ced transitions. This current work involves an examination of the structural and transformation characteristics of the bismuth I-II and II-III transitions under hydrostatic pressures. The relationship of initial structure to the transformation pressure, rate, resistivity change, and resultant structure is discussed. It is shown that the transition pressure and transformation rate are independent of the presence of grain boundaries and associated anisotropy-induced deformation. An observed hysteresis in both the I-II and II-III transitions is shown. BISMUTH is one of the most interesting of the elements exhibiting pressure-induced polymorphs since it undergoes several allotropic transformations at pressures below 90,000 atm. It is known from the early work of bridman1,2 that the two lowest-pressure transitions (1-11 and 11-111) are accompanied by substantial and abrupt changes in resistance and volume. However, unlike the temperature-induced allotropic transformations observed in such elements as lithium, cobalt, tin, and so forth, there is little actually known about many of the characteristics of these pressure-induced transitions. It is the purpose of this work to examine some of the structural and transformation characteristics of the bismuth 1-11 and 11-111 transitions under hydrostatic pressures. Another interesting characteristic of bismuth is that, in its polycrystalline form, hydrostatic pressures of sufficient magnitude will induce severe progressive plastic deformation in the region of the grain boundaries.3 This deformation, which has also been observed in several other metals, is attributed to the high degree of anisotropy in the linear compressibility of bismuth, resulting in shear stresses in the grain boundaries when it is exposed to hydrostatic pressure. Most thermally induced allotropic transformations in metals, whether of the diffusionless ather-ma1 (martensitic) or isothermal nucleation and growth types, are dependent upon structure and prior history,4 viz., grain boundaries, deformation, and so forth. One logically wonders then whether the transformation characteristics of the pressure-induced polymorphs in bismuth might also depend upon initial structure, particularly with respect to the presence of grain boundaries and associated plastic deformation. In this investigation, the role of grain boundaries and plastic deformation on the characteristics of the bismuth I-II and 11-111 transitions will be established. The rather unique residual microstruc-tural changes associated with these transitions will be presented and discussed. The occurrence of a measurable hysteresis in both the I-II and 11-111 transitions will be demonstrated. The type of transformation mechanism based on the observed transformation rate will be discussed. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A) Apparatus. The hydrostatic pressure system utilized in this investigation is similar to that previously reported by Bridgman' and Birch and Robertson,5 and has been previously described.3 For the purpose of this work, the pressure medium utilized was a 1:l mixture of pentane and isopentane. Pressure measurement was by means of a manganin coil in conjunction with a Foxboro Recorder. The manganin coil was mounted in the bottom closure and inserted inside the pressure cavity. Based on calibration against a controlled clearance piston gage at approximately 10,000 atm, the estimated error in the pressure measurement was +2 pct. Assuming the nonlinearity in the pressure coefficient of resistivity between 10,000 and 28,000 atm to be not greater than 1 pct, then the estimated error in the range of the I-II and 11-111 transitions was +3 pct. A century ago, Thomas Carlyle sketched the Emblem of the Wasting Candle in one of his papers. "Terar Dum Prosim" he wrote under the candle-" May I be wasted so that I be of use." The application of his reasoning is an excellent guide for a discussion of the scrap problems of today. The General Electric Co. has addressed itself to the need of proper and careful preparation of scrap metals for many years. A supervisor of salvage directs this work in each of the works. Generally he is an engineer and has had broad factory training. He gives general direction to the collection, preparation and disposition of scrap materials. He operates the extensive facilities which each works has provided for the centralization and control of scrap accumulations, and also initiates studies leading to the reduction of scrap accruing from machining and assembly operations. r We recognize that each industry, each factory, each locality faces a different set of conditions. Irrespective of size, in a plant employing 20 men or a large works with 15,00 employees-certain fundamental principles can be applied for organization and the collection of scrap. The manufacture of electrical apparatus is a highly complicated intricate business. In one area we make electronic tube and adjacent buildings house the manufacture of steam turbines. Both are instruments for power-different in size and in many cases serving different fields of application. Unlike the great industries that build automobiles, trucks, or engines where repetitive operations, once solved, set the stage, electrical manufacturers' plants are large jobbing shops. Therefore, we must carefully plan every step in handling the scrap that "in so wasting to produce the finished motor or locomotive-we can return this product to reprocessing and ultimate use." ESSENTIALS FOR SALVAGE EFFICIENCY The essential steps for an efficient salvage department are: I. Selection of Personnel.-An able foreman would be a man of broad experience and understanding-one who commands the respect of the entire foreman group as well as that of his own men. In the interest of clean scrap, it is necessary to acquaint the foremen in the separate manufacturing units with the need of careful segregation in the shop and the best methods of obtaining it. At least 40 per cent contact time should be devoted for this purpose. 2. The physical equipment of the salvage department should be devised and selected to handle complete, at one point, all scrap operations. Bulky materials as produced by some large shops can be economically placed in salable shape at the divisional point. Because salvage

The use of the bag-house for filtering out fumes produced in certain metallurgical operations is not new in America. There are no patents in force at this time, to my knowledge, which might hinder such use. Up to about 25 years ago the bag-house was only employed in connection with either zinc-works, which produced the oxides, to be sold for paint, or as an auxiliary in extracting lead from high-grade oxidized ores and from galena-concentrates in the Missouri and neighboring lead-regions; this work being then done in the Scotch or American hearths and in very low slag-furnaces, in all of which was produced an excessive amount of oxides which were also finally sold as paints. The literature1 on the above is abundant in text-books and periodical publications. The first large bag-house to be used permanently in connection with lead blast-furnaces was erected, as far as I am aware, about 1887 at the Globe smelting Co.'s works at Denver, Colo., under the Lewis-Bartlett patents. Until the beginning of the year 1930, conditions in the oil industry were such that the production engineer was chiefly concerned with improving the efficiency of development and production technique. Good engineering practice had been adopted to devise and improve methods and materials better suited to drilling for and producing oil and gas. These efforts reduced the hazard and expense of deeper drilling, increased the ultimate recovery from reservoirs and lowered production costs. Equipment was of better design and materials were better suited for the work and were more permanent. These improvements naturally have contributed their share toward increasing the volume of crude oil produced each year. The industry is now faced with a need for preventing a waste of this natural resource; waste which came as a result of continued reckless drilling of new reservoirs. To make a careful study of this economic problem and to devise methods for correcting these conditions was a logical problem for the production engineer. Much time and study have been devoted to the question, and remedial plans have been suggested during the last year and a half. The principles of unit operation have attracted the engineer's attention, as they present ideal conditions for the most scientific and economical development of an oil field. Unitization During 1930 unitization of producing and potentially producing areas has made real progress, and as each new unitized development is agreed upon the objections that loomed so large at the inception of the idea fade into comparative insignificance. Undoubtedly the outstanding example of the efficacy of unitization is the Kettleman Hills project in California.
