Introduction STRIPPING is the name given to the process of removing clay, rock, or other cover from deposits of coal or ore. In this paper it is intended to cover the methods used in carrying on this operation in the anthracite coal regions of Pennsylvania. In doing this, attention will be chiefly devoted to those methods wherein practice in different sections of the region differs, or is susceptible to change or improvement, though it is intended to give as complete data as possible concerning all stages of the operation. The data from which this paper has been prepared have been collected and submitted by a committee representing the larger users of stripping methods, of which committee the writer has acted as chairman. Data and assistance have also been obtained from various mining men, engineers, contractors and manufacturers of stripping equipment, to all of whom our appreciation is clue.

Outcrops of coal have been discovered in many localities in the Philippine archipelago, and practically all of the larger islands contain deposits of this mineral. Very little prospecting has been done to determine the value of the various cod-bearing areas, but so far as known, the largest and most promising fields are found: (1) in northern Cebu; (2) in the small island of Batan, a part of the province of Albay in southeastern Luzon; (3) in the somewhat larger island of Polillo, off the east coast of Luzon, and (4) in southern Mindoro, near the small coast town of Bulalacao. Northern Panny, south-central Cebu, and various localities in southern Luzon, Masbate, Negros, and Mindanao also afford evidences of the existence of coal-beds, the extent and value of which have not yet been proved. The general position of these islands and districts is shown on the map of a portion of the Philippine Islands, Fig. 1. Some of these coal-fields have been known for many years (coal was discovered in Cebu in 1827 and in Batan in 1842),'

Deoxidation is one of the most complex metallurgical operations in the basic open-hearth process. The necessity for deoxidation arises from the fact that the refining operations that precede it require the oxidation of the steel bath. when the refining is completed and the desired composition of the bath has been obtained with respect to the elements subject to control by 'oxidation. there is usually an excess of oxygen present in the bath from the standpoint of the amount desired in the finished steel. The objectives of deoxidation are to control the amount and type of oxides and, although not directly ilnp1it.d by the term or always considered as a Part of the process, to control the amounts of gases such as hydrogen or nitrogen that will be present in the finished steel. There are other aspects to be consideretl in connection with deoxidizing procedures. In addition to the primary objectives of oxide and gas control. the composition of the steel is affected by the elements introduced during the deoxidizing process. Factors in furnace operations are likewise involved, such as slag composition, temperature control. arid heat time. .ill of these should be considered in establishing the most satisfactory deoxidizing procedure for each grade of steel. The purpose of this paper is to outline the objectives of deoxidation as related to steel characteristics, and to summarize the factors in furnace practice and the economic aspects to be considered in connection with deoxidation procedures. Objectives of Deoxidation The primary objectives of deoxidation are the formation and elimination of oxides. The amount of oxygen present in the bath prior to deoxidation is an important factor, since it is the basis of any deoxidation procedure. The oxygen content of the bath is primarily a function of the carbon content, although it is affected also by the temperature, the oxidation of the slag, and transient conditions within the furnace. The relation of oxygen to carbon in the bath is shown in Table I. Table I shows that under actual operating conditions, the amount of oxygen present in the bath is higher than the theoretical amount. This relation would be expected, since the bath is in a state of metastablc equilibrium during the period that the carbon is being eliminated. This paper describes a comprehensive computer program, developed under the joint sponsorship of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Bureau of Mines, that simulates the performance of coal preparation plants. A typical plant configuration may include several different washers, crushers, and screens as well as stream blenders and stream splitters, interconnected in whatever manner the user may specify. The program will predict the mass and energy yields of each unit and the properties of each flowstream (weight, ash, pyritic sulfur, total sulfur, and energy distributions), provided the feed properties and appropriate values for various control parameters are given. The program is used to assess washability characteristics of different coals, to determine the effectiveness of different plant operating conditions, and to compare the performance of various plant configurations. A brief description is given of the methods used to carry out the calculations for each type of unit. Results of some calculations are also presented. These results illustrate the versatility of the program for analyzing both simple and complex plant configurations. The paper concludes with a description of other accomplishments and future plans.

The Bureau of Mines electrowon hafnium metal with an average oxygen content of' 150 ppm at 700°C from an electrolyte containing 27 wt pct LiCl, 62 wt pct RbCl, and 11 wt pct HfC14. The average anode and cathode current efficiencies were 90 pct at anode and initial cathode current densities of 86 amp per sq ft. Haf-nium metal with an average oxygen content of 440 ppm was electrowon at 800oC from an electrolyte containing 90 wt pct KC1 and 10 wt pct HfCl4. The average anode and cathode current efficiencies were similar to those obtained in the LiCL-RbCl-HfCl, electrolyte. The chlorine gas given off at the graphite anode was vented through either a silica or a graphite tube to prevent cell corrosion. THE current method for the commercial production of high-purity hafnium is the thermal decomposition of Hfl4.1 The iodide method is not adaptable to continuous process techniques. Nettle, Hiegel, and Baker2 studied the electrorefining of hafnium from hafnium sponge containing 800 ppm oxygen. They failed to obtain hafnium with 600 ppm oxygen in their initial deposits and obtained AEC specification for oxygen only after 75 pct of the soluble hafnium had been removed from the electrolyte. Calculations using their data indicated this was approximately 4 lb of hafnium. The electrolyte was then used to produce approximately 3 lb of hafnium with a low oxygen content. However, no data are shown concerning the amount of anode material initially used or what percent of it was dissolved, therefore, results are not suitable for evaluation of a continuous operation. In general, it was not possible to consistently obtain low oxygen content metal with the electrolytes described by Nettle, Hiegel, and Baker. Wong, Hiegel, and Martinez3 investigated the electrorefining process for hafnium and showed that even by strict control of electrolyte composition only relatively low oxygen reduction could be obtained. The oxygen contained in the hafnium anode material tended to transfer to the cathode deposit and only a limited purification was possible. Both the "iodide" and the "electrorefining" processes depend upon hafnium sponge as a starting material. The sponge is normally produced by magnesium reduction of HfC14 ' and does not meet AEC specifications for hafnium metal. Since only 30 pct of the anode feed could be utilized3 in the electrorefining cells, the Bureau of Mines developed an electrowinning process. HfC14 was used as the feed material for the electro-winning process described in this report. Many of the electrolytes used in the electrorefining studies3 ap- peared to be suitable carrier-electrolytes for HfC14. However, in the initial studies on electrowinning, it was desirable to use electrolytes that had low solidus temperatures and could be operated over a wide temperature range to investigate parameters of the process. Therefore, electrolytes containing LiC1, NaC1, KC1, RbC1, CsC1, and HfC14, in various combinations were explored. EQUIPMENT Chlorinator. Hafnium carbide was chlorinated to produce HfC14 in the batch-type chlorination shown in Fig. 1. Chlorination temperatures were measured with a thermocouple placed in the center of the HfC charge. A flow meter was used to monitor the helium and chlorine. The exhaust side of the silica chlorina-tor tube was equipped with a flask for collecting organic material released during the initial heating of the HfC. The temperature of an internal heater, which extended from the HfC14 condensing flask to the hot end of the chlorinator, was adjusted to prevent the HfC14 from condensing before entering the collection flask. Helium and excess chlorine were exhausted through the lid of the collection flask to an aqueous NaOH solution. Sublimer. Initial studies were conducted using a sublimer, Fig. 2, made by placing a 13/8-in. OD nickel thimble 11 in. long, inside a 11/2-in. ID nickel bell 12 in. long, and locking it in place. This unit was loaded with HfC14 and partially immersed in the molten electrolyte for sublimation directly into the electrolyte. In another sublimer shown in Fig. 3, the HfC14 was contained in a "resin reaction flask". Quartz wool, previously heated to 600aC, secured between two nickel wire screens, was placed just above the HfC14 powder. The lid contained a vacuum outlet, a gage, an argon inlet, and an air-cooled pipe for condensing the HfC14. This sublimer was evacuated and heated. The sublimation temperature was not critical and the sublimer operated satisfactorily at all temperatures between 250" and 350°C. Electrolytic Cell. The electrolyte chamber, Fig. 4, was made of mild steel 8-in. schedule 20 pipe, 30 in. long. The exterior was metallized with a Ni-Cr alloy. The electrolytes were contained in a 16 gage nickel or iron liner with a nickel heat shield on top. The cell was heated by a resistance furnace. A 21/2-in. ID by 25 in. long air lock was connected to one port of a two-port cell cover assembly through a slide valve. The cover assembly of the air lock was electrically insulated from the cell and was equipped with a rubber sleeve that provided for the passage of the cathode lead. This allowed the cathode deposits to be removed and a new nickel cathode to be introduced without allowing air to enter the cell. THE perfluoro acids and derivatives show unusual surface-active properties that qualify them as possible flotation reagents. They lower the surface tension of water from 15 to 20 dynes below that obtainable with the corresponding hydrocarbon compounds.1, 2 Fluorochemicals adsorb very strongly on solid surfaces to give films that exhibit larger contact angles than films of the corresponding hydrocarbons."' * The large contact angles probably result from the terminal —CF3 group. The perfluoro acids are made by electrolysis of the corresponding carboxylic acid in anhydrous hydrogen fluoride.5 From the perfluoro acids many derivatives may be obtained, such as amides, amines, alcohols, xanthates, ethers and esters and others. Since the fluorinated analogues of the conventional hydrocarbon flotation collectors possess enhanced surface properties, a few were selected for testing. Because a survey of all possible minerals and reagent combinations would be out of the question, hematite was chosen to represent a nonsulphide system and pyrite to represent a sulphide system. The fluorinated reagents used in these experiments were prepared in the research laboratories of Minnesota Mining & Mfg. Co. Some were synthesized especially for this research. They are not available cokmercially. Separation of Nonsulphide Ores: The separation of oxides from silica has always been a challenge to the flotation industry because differences in surface properties of the minerals are normally insufficient to produce clean concentrates. Oleic acid," rosin acids,' and amine salts% ave been used to considerable extent to effect separation of metal oxides and silica. The system hematite-silica was chosen to represent the nonsulphides both because of its difficulty of separation and because large tonnages of easily obtainable material are available, such as gravity concentration tailings and nonmagnetic taconites on the Mesabi Range. The wash-ore tailings used here contained approximately 35 pct iron after desliming. Samples of the material used in this work were part of the same lot used by Chang, Cooke, and Huch9 and were prepared in an identical manner. Reagents for Nonsulphide Ores: Since one of the purposes of this investigation was to compare hydrocarbons with fluorocarbons, reagents of known behavior such as oleic acid, and the alkali metal salts of certain resin acids (Dresinates), were established as standards. Hydrocarbons and fluorocarbons of comparable chain length and other experimental fluorocarbons were tried as collectors for hematite. A list of the materials used and the concentrations of their stock solutions are given in Table I. Since silica can be selectively floated from hematite by conventional reagents," a few fluorocarbon reagents were also tried for this purpose. Their composition and concentrations are given in Table 11. Most of these reagents served the dual function of collector and frother. In the case of F-11 flotation did not occur but it served as a frother when F-6 was employed as a collector. Reagent grade sulphuric acid and sodium hydroxide were used to regulate the pH. Deionized water containing less than 0.1 ppm of salts expressed as NaCl was used for all solutions and flotation tests. The pneumatic flotation cell consisted of a 350-ml fritted glass Buechner funnel with a source of filtered air which could be controlled by a needle valve." A 50-g sample of ore and 250 ml of deionized water were added to the flotation cell and stirred slowly. The reagents were added and the pulp was conditioned before air was admitted to the cell. Approximately 15 ml of the pulp were removed for pH determination before flotation was started and were then returned to the system. The pH was again measured after flotation. Air was admitted to the cell until no further flotation occurred or until the character of the float changed markedly. Both the float and the nonfloat products were filtered, dried, weighed. and assayed for iron. The cell was washed in hot water and rinsed with deionized water after each test. Occasionally the cell was cleaned with concentrated hydrochloric acid to remove iron oxide particles from the glass frit. INTRODUCTION A way of producing 3,000 tpd from the El Mochito Mine was needed. Of this production, 2,000 tpd must come from the San Juan orebody. The original sub-level stoping method did not give satisfactory results due to ground instability, and the highly irregular ore/waste contacts encountered . The experience gained from the initial system helped guide research into the ground instability problem. Results from this work, combined with knowledge gained about the orebcdy configuration, defined constraints that were previously not fully appreciated. These constraints, and others, combined with objectives, were considered together to develop a new mining method. No single technique was found to be suitable, so a hybrid mining system was developed. A combination of ramping, cut and fill, and vertical crater retreat, with an option to use top heading and benching was developed. To complement the mining system, the type of equipment needed was decided upoun. Also, to support the mining system at this expanded rate of product ion, major modifications of existing infrastructure were required. THE EL MOCHITO MINE The El Mochito Mine, of Rosario Resources Corporation, has been in continuous product ion since 198. The mine began operations in April of that yeas at a rate of 100 tpd. The reserves in 198 were 100,000 tons of silver ore assayed at 1,250 grams per tonne. As of the end of 1979, the El Mochito orebodies have produced over 5.6 million tonnes of ore averaging 516 grams per tonne silver, 6.8 lead, and 7.8% zinc. Present ore reserves are about 7.9 million tonnes, averaging 138 grams per tonne silver, 4.6% lead, and 8.7% zinc, with minor quantities of copper, cadmium and gold. An expansion plan to increase mill production two fold to 2,500 tonnes per day is underway. This expansion will require the mine to produce 3,000 tpd. The mine consists of numerous orebodies, all of which have been mined to a certain extent. Of all the orebodies, the San Juan contains 8% of known reserves. This amounts to about 6.7 million tonnes. The significance of the San Juan orebody to the future life of the El Mochito Mine is obvious. If the required mine production of 3,000 tpd is to be sustained, the San Juan must be the source of the majority of that production. Due to the mineability and overall logistics concerned with the other orebodies, the San Juan must be able to reach and maintain a production rate of 2,000 tpd by 1982. GEOLOGY OF THE SAN JUAN OREBODY The El Mochito Mine is a classic example of a chimney replacement deposit in limestone. Similar deposits axe found in Mexico, at the Naica, Providencia, and Santa Eulia Mines. The El Mochito Mine is located at the south- western end of the Sula Valley on the western edge of the Honduras Depression in the Central Cordillera and Central Highlands of Honduras in a setting of Mesozoic sediments. The orebodies occur in a structural basin developed between NNE trending normal faults and apparently hinged on the south end. Topographically, the Mochito Basin lies between the uplifted Santa Barbara mountain in the west and the Palmer Ridge on the east. The San Juan orebody occurs near the intersection of the NE trending San Juan fault and the ENE trending Porvenir fault. The downward continuation of the orebody is controlled by the westward rake of these NW and N dipping structures. The discovery of the San Juan orebody is attributed to analysis of structural evidence of known ore deposits by in-company geologists. The composition of the San Juan orebody is primarily garnet skarn, with local concentrations of hedenbergite and magnetite. The economically important sulfide mineralization consists of (in decreasing abundance), sphalerite , galena, pyrrhotite , and chalcopyrite. There is some indication that a Cu-Ag mineral such as tetrahedrite may also be present. The skarns were formed by replacement of the original limestone by hydrothermal water migrating upward roughly along the intersection between the Porvenir fault system and the San Juan fault system. Textural evidence suggests that the orebody is a composite of several pulses of hydrothermal activity which would explain, in pat, the great irregularity of the contacts and the large horizontal variation in mineralogy. A general pattern of skarn types can be seen in the orebody, partially accounting for the observed lateral variation in grades. This zonation is very generalized, and one or more zones may be missing in any given locality. The orebody is almost invaxiably surrounded by a 2 cm to 25 cm zone of bustamite skaxn with low values. DISCOVERY of a commercial ore deposit has resulted from a program emphasizing geophysical techniques and concentrating upon exploration of alluvial-covered areas. United Geophysical Co. selected these areas as offering the best possibility of success, for here the surface evidence of ore deposits has been hidden from the eyes of prospector and geologist alike. Pima mining district, Pima County, Arizona, was selected for initial exploration. The project was successful in that a commercial ore deposit was discovered and proved through drilling and extensive underground development. A limited region of activity was chosen and library research was begun on available economic and regional geological publications relating to the mining districts. Field reconnaissance of those districts which seemed to hold exploration possibilities provided a general picture and ascertained the existence of alluvial-covered areas of interest. At the conclusion of the reconnaissance trips all data obtained were compiled, and the district which seemed to present the best exploration possibilities was selected by statistical methods. The statistical summary was based on the following considerations: Geological Factors: 1—type of intrusive, P—presence of favorable host rocks, 3—apparent intensity of mineralization, and 4—presence of favorable structure in covered or unexplored areas. Economic Factors: 1—past production from district or mine; 2—size, shape, grade, and type of ore deposit in the district; 3—ease of acquiring mineral rights; and 4—general development facility. Exploration Favorability Factors: 1—results to be anticipated from geological methods alone; 2—application of geophysical methods, namely, topographic conditions, surface interference, depth-size relation, physical property contrasts as related to ores or controlling structural features; and 3—drilling factors. Admittedly, many of these, factors do not lend themselves to absolute evaluation, but relative evaluation, subject to inaccuracies of personal judgment, is always possible. A relative scale from 1 to 10 was established for every factor, representing varying degrees of favorability. For each district a numerical evaluation of each factor was established and a numerical total determined. The obvious advantage of this scheme is that a more concise summation can be presented by numerical means than can be achieved by descriptive means. After a district had been selected as favorable, the first step was to carry out more detailed geological and economic studies to narrow down the areas of interest. The second step was to compile all available geological data from publications and add to these data by mapping where necessary. Geological interpretation and projection of structural or other control into covered or unexplored areas was made whenever logical. To determine the possibilities of geophysical application and to select a geophysical method, physical property contrasts were related to mineral assemblages and/or structural control. The mineral mica, which has been known to man since ancient times, has played an impor¬tant role in the development of our modern industry. In the latter part of the 19th century sheet mica began finding use as a dielectric insulating material in the newly developing electrical industry. Later, when modern elec¬tronics began to develop, it became a vital insulating and dielectric material for use in electronic equipment. Both the electrical and electronic industries were greatly dependent on some form of natural mica. The manufacture of electric motors of varying sizes, electronic tubes, and other electronic items was dependent on an adequate supply of sheet mica. During World War II this material was so vital to national defense that special efforts were made to mine it in the United States as well as to obtain it from overseas mica-producing areas. However, advancing technology has successfully begun the progressive development of man-made mica-based and non-mica-based materials that can replace mica for many uses. In addition, developing technology has dictated changes that have made sheet mica unnecessary for some uses. As the demand for sheet mica declined, the demand for scrap and flake mica has continued to increase. In fact, today the domestic production and use of scrap and flake mica far outshadows the necessity for good¬quality sheet mica in this country. Historically the United States has always been dependent on foreign sources of material for good-quality sheet mica and imports practically its entire requirement. In the case of scrap and flake mica, the United States is the dominant world producer and consumer. End Uses Sheet mica (Chowdhury, 1941; Rajgarhia, 1951; Skow, 1962) is available in many com¬mercial forms, but these forms can be broadly classified into manufactured and unmanufac¬tured mica. Manufactured mica consists of mica that has been shaped, punched, or other¬wise processed into some form, suitable for a particular end use. Unmanufactured mica con¬sists of partially hand-trimmed or processed material that has not been prepared for any particular end use. Unmanufactured mica is broken into two commercial classes consisting of sheet mica and scrap and flake mica. These classes of mica differ greatly in their ultimate end uses and marketed forms. Sheet muscovite mica can be classified by color, degree of prep¬aration of the crude material, thickness, size, visual appearance, and electrical quality. In addition, phlogopite mica is also classified by its thermal stability. Scrap and flake mica consist of mine, trimming shop, and factory scrap that occurs as remnants from mining, processing, and manufacturing operations, and small particle size mica that is available from the beneficiation of pegmatites, clays, schists, or other mica-rich host rock. The end uses for sheet mica vary so greatly from those of scrap and flake mica that it is necessary to discuss them separately. Sheet Mica Sheet mica consists of relatively flat sheets of material which have been mined as naturally occurring books or runs of mica. These sheets are hand-trimmed to remove any imperfections and are punched or stamped into specified shapes for industrial use. Sheet mica can be further processed and is described or specified as block, film, or splittings based on thickness. Block mica is not less than 0.007 in. thick with a minimum usable cross-sectional area of 1 sq in. Film mica is split from the better quali¬ties of block mica to specified thickness groups ranging from 0.0012 to 0.004 in. Splittings are sheets of mica with a maximum thickness of 0.0012 in. and a minimum usable area of 0.75 in. Other small sized, lower quality block mica

This paper describes the U. S. Energy Research and Development Administration's (ERDA) program to develop in situ coal conversion processes, especially gasification. The potential of this technology, the technical directions being explored, and the program strategy to carry the process concepts toward commercialization are emphasized. The geographic location of the U. S. coal resources and a market analysis are described. Commercially successful in situ coal processes could add over a trillion tons of coal to the U. S. coal reserves. The economics of these processes is compared with surface gasification. Independent studies show this process to be 25% cheaper than surface gasification for Western coals. The major projects are briefly described. The Linked Vertical Well process is in the most advanced stage and shows great promise. The last test produced a low-Btu gas averaging 171 Btu per standard cubic foot for average production rates of 8.5 million standard cubic feet per day. The other projects are Packed Bed, Longwall Generator, and Steeply Dipping Beds. Unique factors of the process development are discussed which may lead to commercial processes in the near term. A development strategy is proposed by which this technology could be commercialized before 1985 with potentially lower gas prices and lower environmental impacts, relative to mining plus surface gasification.

Resource based companies have been inundated with changes in government tax legislation during the past few years. To cope, capital investment planning analysts have turned almost completely to computer simulation modeling to react quickly enough to determine the effect on their companies' major investment projects and on the projected financial picture of the companies. This paper will examine various royalty and tax structures as applied to coal, oil and gas, and minerals in the U.S. and Canada with particular emphasis on recent changes in the Canadian tax scene and their implications to capital project economic evaluation in other parts of the world.

THE texture method (utilizing monochromatic copper radiation) was applied to determine the orientation of the columnar grains of two vacuum cast beryllium ingots of 3 in. diam. Samples were mounted in a fixture as illustrated in Fig. 1, which permitted rotation and translation in order to approximate the method used for wires. The specimens were aligned so that the major axes of the columnar grains were parallel. Rotation was around the growth direction. After each translation the specimen holder was rotated 2 deg (1 deg for the samples from the second ingot) until a range of 30 deg on either side of the vertical was covered. The speed of translation was 1 mm per sec. A representative Debye pattern is shown in Fig. 2. The pattern was compared with theoretical patterns for various orientations. Also shown in Fig. 2 is the disposition of reflections on the (10i0), (0002), and (1011) Debye rings for the two possibilities that growth is either in the <10i0> or <ll30> direction. It is apparent that no significant preference for the direction of columnar growth is indicated. It is considered that the lack of a preferred orientation is due to the occurrence of the phase transformation (reported by Martin and oore&apos; to occur above 1250 "C) which masked the original solidification orientation. THE results to come from the application of cheap oxygen to industry in general will be so great that it is not possible to enumerate them beforehand and still less to estimate them. We naturally think first of the fuel to be saved; yet this is only a minor item. The main results will be changes in methods of manufacture or of operation. The speed of operation will be greatly increased, with consequent savings in labor and fixed charges, and also, in most cases, in the cost of fuel. High temperature will be brought within the reach of every manufacturer, whereas it is now available only to those operating expensive electric furnaces located within reach of large water power. New speeds and new temperatures mean improvements and processes not thought of at present. Incidentally the changes in methods will probably change the location of important world industries, the tendency being to concentrate at the fuel centers. The whole subject is so new that most of the data which an engineer requires for definite estimates do not exist. All that is possible now is to obtain a general view of the subject with rough and fragmentary estimates for some of the industries with which we are specially concerned. Most of the figures presented deal with fuel saving merely because there are available no data from which to estimate the effect on speed of operation. When working out the practical problems involved in substituting oxygen for air, in most cases the change will be made step by step; by trying out air enriched with increasing percentages of oxygen. Such partial applications of oxygen will be temporary expedients during the transition and there will be no stopping place short of the complete substitution of air by oxygen. This final stage is therefore the one discussed in this paper.1
