Most publicity about the copper industry nowadays is focused on the adequacy of ore reserves and on excessive mining capacity. These concerns, stemming from public awareness of actual and potential shortages and oversupplies, relate to production rather than consumption. Perhaps the reason for this one-sided view is that copper is thought of as a commodity which is conspicuously traded in world markets, rather than as one of many industrial materials that serve today's rapidly changing technology. Copper differs from other widely traded commodities in that its real cost of production has progressively increased since World War 11. The reasons for the increase are identifiable by analyzing operations in one of the world's large producing centres, the copper province of Arizona. Another respect in which copper differs from some other commodities is that increases in demand occur less automatically in the case of copper than they tend to in commodities whose consumption is more directly related to population growth. The copper industry's current inability to generate and attract needed investment capital is attributable to these differences between copper and other commodities; it suggests that the concept of copper purely as a commodity is outdated. The key to the problem is better integration between the activities of copper producers and users. Depending on circumstances, integration takes various forms- for example, investment tied to long-term sales con- tracts between producers in developing countries and consumers overseas; common ownership of producing and manufacturing facilities in industrialized nations like the U.S.; and consumer-oriented research and marketing by the copper producers.

THE Oaxaca coal fields, shown in Fig. 1, are located in the Alta Mixteca region in the states of Oaxaca, Puebla, and Guerrero. Known outcrops are scattered over 3125 square miles. It is probable that further exploration will reveal a more extensive area of deposits. The region is of great importance to Mexico, as at present the only sources of coal are the fields near the U. S. border. Steel mills are also located in the North, and finished products must travel 600 to 800 miles to the area of consumption in central Mexico. Iron-silicon alloys have had a great influence, in many ways, in modern industry. Silicon steels have been used almost exclusively for the construction of electrical machinery, but have also become an important material for structures which benefit by the high tensile and yield strengths of this material. In elaborating on the early history of work done on iron-silicon alloys, Greiner, Marsh and Stoughton1 went back as far as 1808, and pointed to Berzelius as the first producer of ferrosilicon. During the last twenty years some very important contributions in the form of studies of the iron-silicon system, as well as of the physical properties of these alloys, have been published. In consideration of the brit-tleness and poor machinability of alloys containing more than 5-6 pct Si, commercial interests have stimulated the research done on iron-silicon alloys, but mainly in the range of 0 to 6 pct Si. Yensen2 has shown the influence of im- purities, such as carbon, sulphur and phosphorus on the magnetic properties of 2, 4, and 6 pct Si alloys. Corson3 extended his investigation of physical properties to approximately 32 pct Si, and attributed the brittleness of the high-silicon material to the particular constitutional features of the alloys. Though mentioned earlier in the literature, the effect of nitrogen on crystal growth and magnetic permeability of iron-silicon alloys has been demonstrated recently by Morrill4 and Rostoker,5 respectively. In all the above quoted investigations, except that of Rostoker,5 sand or chill casting processes were employed for the preparation of samples. A major advantage of the powder metallurgy process is that it does away with time-consuming machining in many applications. The powder metal industry is always interested in pro- ducing a finished product employing a material which has presented considerably greater difficulties in manufacture by other methods. Steinit26 described preparation and testing of various Fe-Si alloys which were produced by the powder metallurgy process for the manufacture of armatures for small electric motors or generators. While Steinitz investigated alloys up to 6 pct Si, Rostoker5 went as high as 9 pct Si. The author7 previously discussed the diffusion of iron-silicon compacts containing 6 and 10 pct silicon. It is the object of this paper to study the progress of diffusion occurring in iron-silicon alloys by electrical resistivity measurements. All samples were prepared by pressing and sintering of compacts. Iron, silicon, and Fe-Si powders of various mesh size and compositions were employed to obtain test samples. It was assumed that complete diffusion had been obtained when the electrical resistivity reached a constant value characteristic for that particular alloy. To this end, electrical resistance measurements were used to follow the progress of alloying under various conditions.

A study was made of the effect of ß grain size on the tensile ductility of a-ß titanium alloys haet treated to strengths in the range 165,000 to 180,000 psi. It was concluded that the primary cause of $ embrittlement is the large grain size which is obtained so rapidly in many a-ß titanium alloys when heated into the ß field. It was also found that grain-boundary a and acicular intragranular a in the microstructure are not necessarily detrimental to the tensile ductility if the prior ß grain size is sufficientlv fine. BETA embrittlement occurs in a-ß alloys when the finish hot-working or stages of the subsequent heat treatment have been done at temperatures in the ß field. In order to avoid this embrittlement, for-gings must be finished at temperatures under the ß transus. For better workability, it would be desirable to forge at temperatures in the ß field. For this reason, research has been conducted to determine the cause of ß embrittlement. Although ß grain size has been considered as a possible contributing factor to ß embrittlement, only limited research has been done to evaluate its effect. The effect of addition elements on ß grain growth in unalloyed titanium has been studied by Liu.' Complete mechanical property data, however, were not obtained for correlation with grain size. Ogden and coworkers2 have investigated the effect of both a and ß grain size and grain shape in Ti-Cr-Mo alloys. Their data indicated that tensile ductility was relatively insensitive to ß grain size at annealed strength levels (140,000 psi ultimate). No study has apparently been made to determine the relationship between ß grain size and ß embrittlement in a-ß alloys heat treated to high strength (180,000 psi ultimate). The high-strength condition is that in which ß embrittlement is particularly severe. Beta grain size is not easily varied through the use of a range of annealing times and temperatures in the ß field, because of the rapidity with which ß grain growth occurs. Short-time heating techniques are needed to obtain the smallest ß grains. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE In this research, the experimental procedure was as follows: 1) Tensile and microimpact specimen blanks were resistance heated to produce a range of ß grain sizes. 2) The tensile and microimpact blanks were then solution-treated in the a-ß field and aged to produce predetermined ultimate tensile strengths in the range 165,000 to 180,000 psi. Tensile and impact ductility were then correlated with a grain size for constant strength levels. Materials—The alloys Ti-6A1-4V, Ti-4A1-4Mn, and Ti-16V-2.5Al are representative of the heat-treatable a-ß types in which ß embrittlement can be severe. The compositions and ß transi of the heats studied are given in Table I. The Ti-16V-2.5Al heat was melted and fabricated to 1/4 in. round at Battelle; the other alloys were obtained as 1/4 in. round rolled from commercial heats. The micro-structures of the as-rolled alloys were fine a-ß mixtures. This structure is typical of titanium alloys hot-worked extensively in the a-ß field. Resistance-Heating Treatments to Establish ß Grain Size—For direit resistance heating, a 1/4-in.-diam s~ecimen was heated with a 3000-watt transformer rated for 1000 amp with adjustable secondary voltage. The apparatus included a spray quench fixture. Both heating and quenching periods could be automatically controlled. For temperature measurements, 28-gage Chromel-Alumel wires were tack-welded to the specimen at its midpoint. A high-speed recorder-controller was used to control the heating cycle.

THE deformation textures of metals have been extensively studied because of both the practical implications in metal fabrication and the fundamental insight into the behavior of the metal during deformation. Most studies have been concerned with pure metals or solid-solution alloys and relatively little attention has been directed toward more complex alloy systems. Barrett' and Brick2 have summarized work on multiphase systems in terms of the relative ease of deformation of the phases. Thus, if the phases are deformed about equally, each develops its usual texture for the particular fabrication process. This behavior has been reported for Ag-Cu and Cd-Zn alloys3 and 62-38 brass.4 A dispersion of hard particles in a softer matrix interferes with the normal reorientation of the matrix lattice during deformation, thus distorting the texture or in some cases preventing its development. Increasing the amount of carbon in steel has been observed to increase the randomness of the ferrite5 and almost random textures have been reported for A1-12 pct Si eutectic alloy wires.6 It has also been noted that if the second phase is platelike, deformation causes the platelets to line up in a common direction. The present work concerns a quantitative study of the deformation textures in aluminum-uranium alloys containing 5 or 13 wt pct U. Alloys in this composition range are characterized by a pure aluminum matrix in which the intermetallic compound UA14, is dispersed. From a fundamental standpoint, this system affords the opportunity for studying the effects of a dispersed phase on texture development in an essentially pure metal matrix. Further, these alloys are commonly used as fuels for nuclear research and testing reactors, and a knowledge of the preferred orientation may be useful in evaluating physical and mechanical properties as well as response to fabrication. The deformation textures in sheets of aluminum (99.996 pct), Al-5 pct U alloy, and Al-13 pct U alloy were determined for reductions in thickness of 90 pct by cold rolling. The texture in an alloy rod of the latter composition which had been extruded at 455°C was also determined. It can be readily ascertained from the aluminum-uranium phase diagram that the 5 pct U alloy is hypoeutectic and contains 7.3 wt pct (3.4 vol. pct) UAl4. The 13 pct U alloy has the eutectic composition and contains 18.9 wt pct (9.4 vol. pct) UAl,; however, because of nonequilibrium solidification conditions, the typical eutectic microstructure was not developed. The alloys were prepared by open-air melting in graphite crucibles. The slab castings were cropped and cold reduced 90 pct in thickness on a two-high mill. The slabs were reversed after each pass. Although the uranium-bearing alloys exhibited edge cracking, they could be cold rolled to the desired thickness. Small coupons 1.5 by 0.75 by 0.1 in. thick were sheared from the center of the rolled plate with a major axis parallel to the rolling direction. To obtain a specimen of sufficient thickness for machining of the X-ray diffraction specimen, three coupons were laminated into a single three-ply sandwich with a suitable adhesive. Adhesives which could be cured at room temperatures were selected in order to prevent recrystallization during bonding. Bondmaster M-648 (Rubber and Asbestos Corp.) was used for the pure aluminum laminate and Armstrong A-6 (Armstrong Products Co.) was used for the alloys. The alloy for extrusion was cast in a cylindrical graphite mold! cropped and machined into a 3-in. diam by 4-in. long billet. This billet was preheated to 455°C, upset to 3.125 in. diam, and extruded on a 700-ton hydraulic press at a speed of 6 fpm through a flat-face, 1-in. diam die. The rod was quenched with a water spray as it emerged from the die. The Bingham Canyon Mine, located 48 km (30 mi) southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah, is operated by Kennecott Copper Corporation's Utah Copper Division. This operation is the world's largest open-pit copper mine and produces 96 000 tons (106,000 st) ore and 327 000 tons (360,000 st) waste each day. This material is loaded by large electric shovels and transported by both truck and rail haulage. To meet the requirements of the Clean Air Act of 1970 (as amended), new facilities for the control of smelter emissions were required and are now nearing the final stages of construction. The facility will be capable of treating all the output from the mine, some 2,530 tons (2,789 st) per day of combined concentrate and precipitate. Costing $280 million and necessitating the replacement of reverberatory furnaces with continuous smelting vessels, the plant, with its massive and complex gas handling and acid-making facility, is required to remain on-stream with the minimum of pollution control equipment outages to conform with Federal Regulation 52.2325.

SINce the time of their discovery, the genesis of the ores at Mount Morgan, and the nature of the changes which have affected the surrounding rocks, have been the subject of investigation and speculation by geologists and mining engineers. Developments at this mine, for a long period the greatest gold producer of the world, show that with depth the orebody grades into copper, of which metal it now furnishes a large output, exceeding in value the gold. In earlier times, the purity of the gold and the first extremely heterogeneous character of the ore made it an interesting problem. Now, the probable depth of the copper enrichment, genesis, and true relations of the neighboring rocks furnish equally profitable material for investigation, and the present somewhat detailed description of these ores and rocks, from microscopic study, may prove of interest. , The mine occupies a highly silicified portion of a belt of quartz-porphyry, which is believed to be the oldest rock of the region. This belt of quartz-porphyry and allied rocks runs north and south between two areas of a later intrusive granite, as shown on the geologic map,' Fig. 1. Near the orebody the quartz-porphyry has been intruded by a dense basaltic mass called the " Old Basic." Cutting all three of these igneous masses are two sets of basaltic dikes, one running northwest-southeast, and the other, cross dikes, northeast-southwest. These dikes may be contemporaneous with, instead of later than, the ore. Their number has caused peculiar difficulties in extracting it, as the clay selvage of decomposed material affords no adhesion between dike and ore, causing great blocks to loosen and come down. IN a previous article preliminary experiments were described, indicating the possibilities of a quantitative spectroscopic method for the determination of small amounts of lead in copper, which would be accurate and rapid, and could be carried out in the refining plant by one not skilled in chemical analysis. The present paper deals with the development of the method in the factory, giving the details of apparatus and its standardization, and presenting a comparison of the accuracy of the method with that of the standard electrolytic determination. Riparian communities are those related to, or near a natural watercourse (or sometimes of a lake, impoundment, or tidewater). Generally, riparian communities contrast sharply with the dominant vegetation type in an area, for example, the willow-birch-aspen- dominated watercourse in the Black Hills with its associated beaver- muskrat-trout habitat as compared to the dominant monotype ponderosa pine forest on either side of the drainage. Riparian ecosystems are valuable for the aesthetics, namely, varied landscape; photography and art; human awareness; diversity of plant and animal life, some of which may be unique to that habitat; cover, food, and water for associated wildlife and domestic animals; for recreation; for domestic water supply; and as natural outdoor laboratories. One major negative impact on riparian communities is hazardous chemicals from effluents from agricultural, industrial, and mining- metallurgical processes. One such chemical is cyanide, long used in the processing of gold and silver, and discharged previously directly into some of our natural ecosystems. With present environmental awareness, industry and government are attempting to minimize or eliminate this contamination. Homestake Mining Company began processing gold ore in the Lead- Deadwood area of South Dakota in 1878 and has remained in production at variable activity levels to the present time. The amount of cyanide (and heavy metals) entering the ecosystem during this time can only be crudely estimated, in part because of the variability in activity and the lack of understanding and concern about environmental pollution until the 1960's. Though powder metallurgy is one of the oldest of metallurgical processes, it is in its infancy as a branch of the modern field of metallurgy. As early as 3000 B.C., the ancients produced implements and weapons of iron by reducing iron ore in a charcoal fire and forging the resultant sponge while still hot into the desired shape. Melting and casting soon superseded the powder metallurgy practice, and it was not until the turn of the twentieth century that powder metallurgy was applied to the commercial manufacture of tungsten lamp filaments. From this beginning, the use of the powder metallurgy process spread" to the manufacture of porous oil-impregnated bearings, cemented carbide tools, contact points, diamond grinding wheels, clutch facings, starter brushes, resin-bonded radio cores, magnets, metallic filters, and other parts. More recently, and particularly during the present war, there has been a definite trend toward the manufacture of machine parts by this process in competition with the more conventional fabricating methods. Notwithstanding these many developments, scientific progress has been slow. While many articles on powder metallurgy have appeared in the press and various publications, there have been too few contributions to our technical societies, with the result that there is a dearth of the type of information necessary for the full development of this science. It is of primary importance that the results of research and development be freely disseminated if powder metallurgy is to realize its fullest potentialities. Purpose of Investigation Excluding the refractory metal field, all commercial powder metallurgical products made by a cold compressing and sintering operation contain voids. These voids can be substantially eliminated by subsequent severe working and heat-treatment, but ' such practice has not proved economical in most applications. By applying heat during the compressing operation, plastic deformation of the powder particles is substantially increased, and the resultant compact or briquette is practically free of voids. However, hot-pressing has many attendant problems, which at present preclude its use in the manufacture of precision parts. The more important of these are to devise: 1. A die steel capable of withstanding high pressures at elevated temperatures. 2. A high-temperature lubricant capable of preventing excessive die wear and welding of the compact to the die walls. 3. A method of retaining a neutral or reducing atmosphere in the compacting zone of the die assembly. 4. A means of ejecting the hot-pressed specimen into a neutral atmosphere until reasonably cold.

Precipitation of FeO from Fe-O solid solutions has been studied by metallographic methods. Such precipitation, which is visible, is composed largely of barely resolvable spheroidal particles. No metallographic evidence has been found for grain boundary oxide films. Oxygen diffusion into a iron does not occur chiefly by inter-granular penetration. IN an earlier communication' dealing with the solid solubility of oxygen in a iron, it was shown that under one set of conditions it was possible to show FeO precipitated from supersaturated solid solution. However, to assist in rationalizing the effect of an FeO second phase upon the mechanical properties of iron, it would be desirable to have more information on the possible modes of precipitation and on the thermal treatments required to produce precipitation.

The Little Rocky Mountains host epithermal gold-silver bearing vein and stockwork deposits in a syenite intrusive complex. Pegasus Gold Ltd. is currently mining these oxidized deposits by open-pit methods and recovering gold and silver by heap-leach processes. A geologic program has been designed to effectively determine the basic ore characteristics; 1) mineralization; 2) oxidation; 3) structural setting; 4) lithology; 5) alteration; and ultimately, 6) the leachability of the ore. Geologic mapping, sampling, drilling, assaying, and testing are routinely used in exploration, development, production control, mine planning, and ore reserve estimations. Timely and accurate assay results are essential for the program's success.

There is an ever-increasing demand for furnaces with controlled atmosphere, due to the large quantities of steel being used in the automotive industry, such as the high-chromium stainless irons, the 18 Cr, 8 Ni stainless iron and low-carbon steel sheets. The difficulties involved in the annealing of such materials, if they are to be kept absolutely free from oxidation, are many. It is possible to bright-anneal these steels in small laboratory hydrogen furnaces, using specially purified hydrogen and taking some additional precautions. In the first place, the insulation, usually of alumina or magnesia, holds small amounts of water vapor, which it is almost impossible to remove completely. Secondly, there is always condensataion of water vapor in the cooling chambers of such furnaces, and with the continuous circulation of the hydrogen gas in the furnace, the water vapor is carried from the cooling chamber back into the heating chamber. This water vapor oxidizes the charge. Lastly, the supply of moisture is made sure by the diffusion of small amounts of air from the atmosphere into the furnace against the pressure of the hydrogen. The oxygen combines with the hydrogen and forms more water. Under such conditions there is little gained by using specially purified gas, because it becomes contaminated after reaching the furnace. Low-carbon Steel If a sheet of low-carbon steel is annealed in such a furnace at 750" C. and allowed to cool with the furnace, an adequate flow of purified hydrogen being maintained all of the time, the steel will come out with a very thin coating of blue oxide. If a similar sheet is annealed at the same temperature and quickly pushed into the cooling chamber, it will come out nearly bright, or perhaps with only the edges slightly discolored. It is difficult to get a piece of steel through a furnace of this type with an absolutely bright surface. This is due to the fact that there are always traces of oxygen or water vapor in the furnace. When the steel is allowed to cool with the furnace, it reaches a critical temperature where the affinity of iron for oxygen is greater than that of hydrogen for oxygen, and the steel comes out discolored. IT is, of course, expected that manufacture of the various metal powders should involve numerous methods adapted to the specific characteristics of the metals themselves. Several methods for powdering a particular metal may be available, but the physical characteristics of the powder as produced by the several methods may be quite different. In the final analysis, the application of the metal powder dictates the physical properties that the metal powder must possess, and this, to a very large extent, will determine which of several possible methods of manufacture is adopted. Sometimes powder of the same metal is produced by more than one method, each powder having specific characteristics that make it particularly suitable for its application. For purposes of classification, the various methods of powdering metals can be grouped as follows: 1. Machining. 2. Milling (by ball mills, stamps, attrition mills, etc.). 3. Shotting (pouring molten metal into water, air, etc.). 4. Granulation (by stirring molten metal while solidifying). 5. Atomizing (disintegrating by steam, compressed air, etc.). 6. Condensation of metal vapor. 7. Reduction of oxide powders. 8. Chemical precipitation. 9. Electrolytic deposition. 10. Sintering (for producing alloy powders). 11. Formation of an alloy followed by dissolving or otherwise remov-ing one of the alloying constituents.

This paper is a study of the differential flotation of the sulphide minerals in the presence of salts of silver, lead and zinc. In practice, accidental activation due to these salts is more important than their use as reagents to replace copper sulphate. The general method of investigation has been based upon contact tests, the temperature of 35°C being chosen in conformity with earlier work. Potassium ethyl xanthate and potassium amyl xanthate were selected as collectors and pure sulphide minerals were used. The experimental procedure has been outlined in earlier papers and all solutions were kept carbonate-free.14 Contact, or spreading of an air bubble, at a mineral surface indicates the presence of an adsorbed collector film. Purity of Reagents The xanthates were purified in the usual manner.' Neither the cyanide nor the sodium hydroxide solutions contained sufficient carbonate to give a precipitate with barium chloride solution. The silver sulphate was prepared from pure silver nitrate by evaporation with concentrated sulphuric acid until there was no evidence of brown fumes, This solution was diluted and the difficultly soluble sulphate washed with water so that unchanged nitrate was dissolved. The resultant crystalline powder was pure white. The lead and zinc salts were prepared by dissolving especially pure lead and zinc in C.P. nitric and sulphuric acid solution and the crystals drained. The standard solutions were checked by titration. It was felt desirable to use the sulphate radical wherever possible, but since lead sulphate was insufficiently soluble for the purpose of the experiments, it was necessary to use some other lead salt. A.R. copper sulphate was used without further purification. Results The results are presented in the accompanying figures; the areas of noncontact (nonflotation) are shaded in Figs. 8, 9, 10 and 11; in the remainder they lie to the right of the curve. Zinc Sulphate The curves in Fig. I are to be compared with those for Fig. 2, for which zinc sulphate is absent. This comparison shows that the influence of the zinc ion is usually small. Its influence is more marked, however, for chalcopyrite in the absence of cyanide. The influence of zinc sulphate is also marked for copper-activated sphalerite, for which tests were made only in the "absence of cyanide. The results are of importance in the separation of pyrite from copper-activated sphalerite when zinc sulphate is added in the lead flotation section (p. 204 of ref. I). Sphalerite does not adsorb the collector (i.e., become floatable) under the conditions chosen.

Large deposits of manganiferous iron ores, representing several million tons of metallic manganese, occur in the United States. The Minnesota deposits of such ore are of outstanding importance because of their size, state of development, ease of mining and proximity to the Great Lakes, which permits water transportation to steel centers. In view of the fact that our steel industry requires large quantities of manganese, for which no satisfactory substitute has been found, and because our reserves of ferro-grade ore are comparatively small, the development of methods that will make our large deposits of manganiferous iron ores available as a source of ferromanganese is an important problem. Realizing the importance of this problem, some years ago the North Central Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the Minnesota School of Mines Experiment Station undertook jointly the development of methods for recovering the .manganese content of manganiferous iron ores in a form suitable for the production of ferromanganese, the 80 per cent. alloy indispensable in producing steel. Two types of manganiferous iron ores have been described in previous reports.' The brown ores are higher in iron and lower in manganese than the black ores; the black ores are more siliceous but contain less phosphorus. The utilization of the iron content of the brown ores in the production of steel appears to furnish the best basis for their treatment. WHETHER the United States and its allies can W meet the challenge of a war brought by the Communists will depend largely on who wins the battle of steel production. At the present stage of the world situation, the United States and the other members of the Western family of nations have the lead on iron curtain countries. But we have no sure way of knowing what is happening at Magnetogorsk and other Russian iron and steel producing centers. We must also face the possibility that we may have to meet the challenge alone. The fortunes of war and world politics can strip us of friends and co-fighters quickly. The destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are indicative of what the world can expect if war-madness ever grasps the earth again. Our domestic supply of high grade open-pit and underground iron ore is dwindling because of the drain of three wars and higher than ever civilian consumption. The production of iron ore and its eventual use in blast furnaces are the critical problems of an armed democracy today. The world crisis has led to efforts towards beneficiation for increasing ore supplies. The huge reserves represented by the magnetic taconites at the eastern end of the Mesabi, once in production, should provide us with a substantial portion of our native ore for many years. The estimated 10 to 20 million tons of concentrates annually can be increased in an emergency. If we had a certainty of peace for the next 50 to 100 years, the situation would be a stable, hopeful one, aided by importations of high grade ore from sources such as Canada and Venezuela. The hard truth is that we have little surety of peace tomorrow morning. Let us assume 'the U. S. could build sufficient processing plants for increasing production of magnetic taconites under the pressure of national emergency. We must also recognize the power of atomic warfare to contaminate an area as large as the Eastern Mesabi. Thus, it becomes imperative to seek some means of protecting our ability to produce the steel we may one day need to survive. The nonmagnetic taconites, completely dwarfing the magnetic taconites areawise as well as tonnage-wise, might provide us with this insurance. Present indications are that they will be considerably more expensive to treat, but in a desperate situation we might be very grateful for ores yielding 40 to 50 pct Fe recoveries at grades of 53 to 58 pct Fe carrying low phosphorus. The University of Wisconsin, because of the difficult iron ore situation in the state, has been working on the nonmagnetic taconite problem for the past three years in the hope of making a contribution toward its eventual solution. In Wisconsin, the Western Gogebic Range has been the state's most effective iron producing area. Today however, only two mines are in operation, both underground and approaching depths of more than 3000 ft. The range, however, does have a large supply of nonmagnetic taconites and presents a promising field for study. While the Gogebic offers one large source of nonmagnetic taconites, Michigan and Minnesota have even greater supplies of such material. Alabama, the northeastern states and the West all have low grade iron ore sources which might be utilized under extreme conditions. The Gogebic Range located in northeastern Wisconsin and northwestern Michigan has a total length of about 70 miles, about 45 of which are in Wisconsin. The iron formation averages 500 to 600 ft in width, dips 70' to the north and strikes at approximately N 63° E. The formation is sedimentary and consists of six distinct members characterized by alternating divisions of ferruginous chert and ferruginous slate. The footwall is generally quartzitic and the hanging wall of a sideritic slatey character. The iron minerals are mainly hematites with some magnetites, goethites, limonites and small amounts of siderite. In the area studied, very small amounts of iron silicates were observed. The magnetites occurred mostly in the Anvil-Pabst and Pence members, mixed with hematites and representing roughly about 10 to 20 pct of the total iron in the formation, thereby characterizing it as nonmagnetic. The gangue is of various forms of silica such as chert, opal and flint. Complete liberation of iron and gangue minerals is rare. There is always some iron present in the chert ranging from jasper-like solutions to fairly coarse iron oxide specks. Likewise, one always finds finely dispersed silica within the iron minerals. In late 1943 the Bureau of Mines carried out a trenching and sampling program in the two mile stretch between Iron Belt and Pence in Iron County, Wis. Preliminary work was based on samples from one of the four trenches cut by the Bureau of Mines. The second special war meeting of the New York Section was held on Thursday evening, Aug. 23,-preceded by is an informal dime The topic for discussion -was the supply of sulphur and pyrite, the raw materials for the manufacture of one of the most important of till war materials-sulphuric acid. The first speaker was William Young Westervelt, the Institute's representative on the War Minerals Committee. Before taking up the subject of the evening, Mr. Westervelt briefly described the organization and plan of operation of the War Minerals Committee.
