THE methods that may be applied to the treatment of slurries and water, as these are related to practical coal-preparation problems, are concerned essentially with the movements of solids suspended in water. It is assumed that there are no fundamental differences between the principles involved in the treatment of coal slurries and the phenomena encountered in general mineral-dressing practice, and the latter are presented in some detail. Basic principles are correlated with present practice for both the anthracite and the bituminous coal. fields, and meth¬ods are discussed which are designed to utilize best all the material subjected to treatment and suggest a sound approach to the solution of problems relating to the return of clear water to process or to streams. In order to approach the practical phases of the subject with sufficient understanding of the basic principles, it is necessary to discuss two types of phenomena that are applicable. The first is flocculation and the second is sedimentation. Descriptive matter is given covering the various meth¬ods and types of equipment employed to conduct these operations, with emphasis on their application to water and coal-slurry treatment.

INTRODUCTION. THE geology of Butte possesses especial interest on account of the magnitude of the ore deposits, their extraordinary richness and persistence in depth. Since its discovery in the early 60's the district .has yielded, in round numbers, 6,000,000,000 lb. of copper, 260,000,000 oz. of silver, 1,250,000 oz. of gold, and a large but not definitely known number of pounds of zinc. This enormous metal production has been derived from an ore tonnage estimated roughly at 65,000,000 tons. At the present day, most of the important mine shafts have reached a depth of. 2,400 ft., while several are more than 3,000 ft., deep. At these-great depths rich bodies of copper ore are being exploited, showing no diminution in metal content as compared with the ores of the higher levels. The present (1913) daily rate of production is approximately 14,000 tons, of which 13,250 tons may be regarded as copper ore, although a small percentage of this is minable only because of the presence of

DATA on the solubility of hydrogen in iron-silicon alloys are of practical interest, as hydrogen causes gas unsoundness and embrittlement in iron and steel and is also a factor in the metallurgy of cast iron. Zapffe and Sims1 have recently demonstrated that in deoxidized iron and steel castings gassiness and bleeding are primarily functions of the hydrogen content of the liquid metal. These authors also suggested convincingly that ordinary melting and casting practice provides several sources of hydrogen for absorption by the metal. Norbury and Morgan,2 and Boyles3 have shown that dissolved hydrogen affects the graphitization of cast iron. Schneble and Chipman4 included in a study of the effects of superheating on the properties of cast iron an investigation of the part played by hydrogen. Schwartz, Guiler and Barnett6 investigated the significance of hydrogen in the metallurgy of malleable cast iron. A complete interpretation of investigations of this kind calls for equilibrium values of the solubility of hydrogen in the liquid and solid phases. From the theoretical standpoint, the solubility of gases, especially hydrogen, may reveal some aspects of the nature of liquid metallic solutions. This was implied in the early work of Sieverts6 on the effect of alloying additions on the solubility of hydrogen in copper. Recent work by Bever and Floe7 has shown that in liquid copper-tin alloys the solubility of hydrogen changes abruptly at the composition of the intermetallic compound Cu3Sn. It is of considerable interest to determine whether liquid alloys of iron also have compositions at which the solubility of hydrogen exhibits a discontinuous or otherwise unique behavior. Among the various alloys of iron the iron-silicon system is important because of the presence of silicon in various structural alloy steels, transformer sheets, cast irons and special acid-resisting castings. The various grades of ferrosilicon, finally, cover almost the entire remainder of the composition range. Published information on the solubility of hydrogen in iron-silicon alloys is meager. The first values for pure liquid - iron were reported in 1910-1911 by Sieverts and Krumbhaar8 and by Sieverts.9 They found that 100 grams of iron absorbs 28 C.C. of hydrogen at 1550°C. and one atmosphere pressure, and 31 C.C. at 1650°C. In 1938 Sieverts, Zapf and Moritz10 published a value of 26.3 c.c. at 1550°C. Data on the solubility of hydrogen in liquid iron-silicon alloys and in liquid silicon

The rate of dissolution of cementite was studied in three low-carbon materials: a zone-refined Fe-C alloy, an Fe-0.5pct Mn-C alloy, and a commercial low-carbon steel. The materials were spheroidized, ad then held isothermally at temperatures above the Al. The isothermal anneal was interrupted periodically by a water quench and the specimens were analyzed by quantitative metallography for the amount of aus-tenite formed during the anneal. The results of this study were compared with an analytical model for the process, which assumes that carbon diffusion in aus-tenite is the rate-controlling step for the cementite dissolution process. The correlation between the model and the experimental data is excellent for the zone-refined Fe-C alloys; however, the Fe-0.5 pct Mn-C alloys and the commercial steel deviate from the calculated model. This deviation is thought to be a result of manganese segregation between the carbide and the matrix. The rate of nucleation of austenite at carbide interfaces was reduced by the manganese addition and enhanced by the presence of ferrite-ferrite grain boundaries. PREVIOUS investigations of the nucleation and growth of austenite from ferrite-carbide aggregates are not entirely satisfying for at least one of several reasons. The most prevalent of these is a lack of quantitative data. Engineering studies have been run on many steels with little control over important parameters such as composition and initial aggregate structure. The data obtained are valid only for material with identical chemistry and thermal history. A more informative approach to the problem of aus-tenitization would be to determine the mechanism that controls the rate of solution of carbide in austenite and how it is modified by alloying elements. This information could then be used to calculate an austeniti-zation rate for any material, provided its composition and structure are known. The object of the present work is to establish the rate-controlling step for cementite dissolution in Fe-C austenite and to investigate the modification of this rate by small manganese additions. The composition and structure of the material used were carefully controlled and all measurements were designed to allow a quantitative analysis of the kinetic process that controls the austenitization rate. A MODEL FOR DISSOLUTION OF CEMENTITE Cementite dissolution has been analyzed mathematically by a model that approximates the material used in the experiments. This model postulates a regular ar-array of identical cementite spheroids with 4 C( diam, embedded in a grain boundary- free ferrite matrix. The analysis provides a detailed description of the dissolution of one carbide spheroid and a generalization of the solution by summation over all the carbides in the material. The carbides may be isolated by defining identical, space-filling cells of ferrite around them. If the cell dimensions are greater than the diameter of the austenite sphere resulting from complete dissolution of the carbide, and no interaction (through diffusion in ferrite) takes place between cells during the dissolution process, the model need concern only one cell, since the solution in each cell is identical. In the experimental material, the dimensions of the cell, the carbide, and the final austenite sphere are approximately 24, 4, and 8 p, respectively; use of the single cell is therefore justified. The experimental observations are made on the austenite nodules that form around each carbide during the dissolution process. The model concerns the growth of these austenite nodules. The attendant shrinking of the carbide can be obtained from the same analysis by an extension of the calculations. Several a priori assumptions are necessary to make the analysis of the growth problem tractable. They are: 1) carbon diffusion through the austenite nodule is the rate-controlling process; 2) local equilibrium exists at all interfaces, 3) the austenite nucleus that forms on each carbide instantaneously envelops the carbide; 4) during the austenite growth process, the diffusion flux of carbon in ferrite is insignificant; 5) a quasi-steady state exists in the austenite concentration field; that is, at any instant during the dissolution process, the austenite carbon concentration gradient closely approximates that for a steady-state solution; and 6) the effects of capillarity on the dissolution rate of the carbides can be neglected. Referring to Fig. 1, a mass balance at the y-a interface for an infinitesimal boundary movement gives: Where rb is the outer radius of the austenite shell, C1 and C are carbon concentrations at the interface in austenite and ferrite, respectively, see Fig. 2, is the diffusion coefficient of carbon in austenite for the concentration of carbon at the interface, and t is time. The fifth assumption permits the austenite carbon concentration to be approximated by the Laplace solution for the spherical case. THIS paper discusses a method and apparatus for determining the dip of formations traversed by a drill hole, by means of electrical measurements in the hole. The process consists in recording the Spontaneous Potentials present along three oriented generatrices in the hole, By comparison of the three curves thus obtained, after application of a correction factor to compensate for any deviations of the hole, the dip angle and the dip direction are determined. Excellent accuracy is obtained for dip angles over 10°. Because the method is simple and the apparatus rugged, the measurements are rapid and reliable; consequently, they can be made at all the levels that are of interest at any time after the well has been drilled. Mechanical cores are not needed to evaluate the dips. A convenient, time-saving procedure is to perform the dipmeter survey at the time the electrical log is taken, using for both operations the same cable and truck. Actual examples of results obtained in wells of the Gulf Coast area are given.

In a recent paper, Held1 showed that rolling conditions can have a marked effect on the volume fraction of surface texture produced in low-carbon steel. This variation in rolling texture is reflected in the recrys-tallization texture and affects the plastic properties of the annealed sheet. The fact that roll friction can influence the surface deformation texture in iron and steel has been known for some time;'= but the magnitude of the effect has never been shown quite so clearly before. The analogous effect during wire drawing has been recognized for many year.4 Dillamore and Roberts5 examined surface textures in warm- and cold-rolled aluminum and copper. They found that when a surface texture was present it could be described as the interior texture rotated about the transverse sheet direction. The angle of rotation was a function of the type of lubrication, the amount of reduction per pass, and the temperature of rolling. The purpose of the present note is to show that surface textures in cold-rolled iron can also be described as interior textures rotated about the transverse sheet direction. Vacuum-melted electrolytic iron* was straight- rolled 90 pct at room temperature in a two-high rolling mill with 5-in.-diam rolls. Two rolling procedures were used: a) no lubrication with reductions of about 0.035 in. per pass, and b) heavy lubrication with lano-line and reductions of about 0.002 in. per pass. The final sheet thickness was 0.030 in. (110) pole figures were determined by transmission through specimens taken from the sheet surface and sheet midplane. The surface texture of the sheet cold-rolled according to procedure a is shown in Fig. l.* The shapes of the low-intensity contour lines indicate that the texture can be described as a partial fiber texture with a (110) fiber axis normal to the sheet. The approximate range of orientstions present is (011)[211] — (0ll)[100] — (011)[211]. This range of orientations is what one would obtain by rotating the interior texture 90 deg about the transverse sheet direction. The intensity of (110) and (222) reflections from planes parallel to the surface was measured after removing metal from the surface by chemical polishing. THIS paper presents geophysical and subsurface data observed in the vicinity of Shafts No. 1 and and 5 of the National Lead Co. lead mines at Fred-ericktown, Madison County, Missouri, see Fig. 1. The area selected is an excellent example to illustrate the close correlation between geophysical data and geological facts as revealed by drilling and mining. Such close correlations make geophysical applications appropriate to the development of known ore-bodies as well as the exploration for new orebodies. In the past, magnetic and shallow electrical resistivity observations were made over limited areas in the Fredericktown lead district by the Missouri Geological Survey, with favorable results. The first extensive magnetic and electrical resistivity surveys were started by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in May 1945 in two areas located northwest and southwest of Fredericktown, as shown in Fig. 1. The results of these surveys were reported in April 1948 at Denver, spontaneous-polarization surveys were made over the property of the St. Louis Smelting and Refining Co. at Fredericktown by Sherwin F. Kelly Geophysical Services, Inc. Aeromagnetic surveys were completed in 1948 over the Fredericktown quadrangle by the U. S. Geological Survey. Since 1945 geophysical surveys have been an important part of exploration programs in the Fred- ericktown district. Such methods, magnetic and electrical resistivity, are now serving as guides in the further development of known orebodies. On an irregular pre-Cambrian igneous erosion surface Lamotte sandstone of upper Cambrian age was deposited, partially filling the topographic basins, see Fig. 2. Above and conformable with the Lamotte sandstone lies the Bonneterre formation, a dolomite with locally interbedded thin dolomitic limestones and shales at its base. This formation also only partially filled the topographic basins. The Bonneterre was overlain by the Davis, Derby, Doe Run, and Potosi formations, which are principally dolomite. Uplift, tilt, and slight warping has allowed erosion and weathering to remove most of the sediments overlying the Bonneterre, and in many places, not far from the mine, the Lamotte sandstone is exposed. This erosion has also exposed areas of pre-Cambrian igneous rock. The Lamotte sandstone, having been deposited on an irregular pre-Cambrian surface, is extremely variable in thickness and ranges from zero where it laps the pre-Cambrian rocks to 250 ft thick in the deeper basins. In the vicinity of the mines the Bonneterre dolomite ranges from zero where it wedges out against the pre-Cambrian igneous rocks to 400 ft thick. The ore deposits occur as a bedded disseminated type1 and are chiefly composed of galena and pyrite with minor amounts of chalcopyrite and siegenite. Heavy pyrite and marcasite mineralization may be found throughout the Bonneterre formation. However, there is little or no apparent association of these iron sulphide bodies lying above the ore hori-

INTRODUCTION The chapter discusses the procedures and operations starting with the actual training of operations personnel with respect to a grinding mill circuit and a typical check-out and start-up of a grinding circuit before turning over the operating circuit to production personnel. For the purposes of this paper, it will be assumed that the mill circuit installation is at a new location or a new operation at an existing operation. Expansion of an existing grinding facility would probably require less time-consuming and less costly procedures than those that will be outlined here. There are numerous arrangements and types of equipment that can be used for grinding circuits. For example, the grinding could be wet or dry. The grinding mill could be a rod or ball mill or some combination. The circuit could be open or closed. The closed circuit classification could be accomplished with rake classifiers, spiral classifiers, cyclones, stationary screens, or vibrating screens. To limit the discussion, the grinding circuit shown on Figure I will be discussed. The circuit includes a dry ore feed by a belt conveyor (feeder) to a wet ball mill. The ball mill discharges to a cyclone feed pump box and pump. The pump feeds a cyclone type classifier with the cyclone underflow returning to the ball mill feed and cyclone overflow being the required grinding circuit product. For the purposes of this paper, it will also be assumed that the extensive overall preparation necessary for every start-up has been accomplished. These preparations are only outlined here as they have been adequately dealt with in recent papers. (1), (2), (3) The items in these preparations would include. 1. Appointment and indoctrination of the start-up organization. 2. Integration of the start-up into the overall project schedule. 3. Development of the specific start-up schedule. 4. Budget determination and monies appropriation.

This paper describes a technique which permits visual observation of oil displacement processes througlrout the interior of a porous structure as thick as 2 in. A model having glass walls is filled with finely powdered glass. Such a model becomes completely transparent if the powdered glass pack is saturated with an oil having the same refractive index as the glass. When water or gar, with a refractive index different from that of the oil (glass) is injected, the model becomes opaque in the space occupied by the water (gar). visual observation and photography of these displacement processes are thus rendered possible. The following processes have been studied: (I) displacement of oil by water (linear drive) in a homo-geneous formation and in a stratified formation, (2) water flooding (five-spot well pattern), (3) solution gas-drive process, and (4) oil-bank formation. INTRODUCTION Most of the scaled model experiments heretofore carried out in the Koninklijke/Shell Laboratorium, Amsterdam, have been done in steel containers, in which oil-saturated sand packs represented the oil-bearing formation. In such experiments, for instance those on the displacement of oil by water, the cumulative oil production was measured as a function of the cumulative water injection. In order to interpret the measured production data, a need has for some time been felt for a means of observing visually what happens in the course of such experiments. Some information of this kind was obtained earlier by observing the water-oil distribution in various cross sections of the sand after the conclusion of the experiment.' However, the technique used did not guarantee that the fluid distribution remained undisturbed. Moreover, the procedure was somewhat elaborate and the information obtained limited. Therefore a new technique has been developed, which is described below. DESCRIPTION OF EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE AND APPARATUS Glass models simulating part of an oil reservoir are filled with ground Pyrex glass of a specific grain size, representing the porous structure of the prototype. Before an experiment is started, the porous formation has to be saturated completely with an oil having exactly the same refractive index as the Pyrex glass powder. All light-scattering surfaces of the glass grains become invisible and the formation is then transparent. If the oil is displaced by another fluid (e.g. by water in a water-drive experiment, or by gas liberated from the oil in a solution gas-drive experiment) the formation becomes opaque in the region where the oil is expelled from the rock.* The back of the apparatus is painted black and illumination is from the front; therefore, in the photographs of the experiments, the oil-bearing formation appears black, whereas the water- or gas-invaded areas are white.

COMPOUNDS in the U-N system have received little attention since the work of Rundle, Baen-ziger, Wilson, and McDonald in 1948.' They described the three nitrides UN2, U2,N2, and UN as the only phases in this system. The region between UN and U,N, was reported to consist of the two phases while the region between U,N, and UN, is a homogeneous solid solution in which the U,N3, structure transforms with increasing nitrogen content into the UN, structure. This report presents the results of an X-ray diffraction study of the phases present in the region of the diffusion gradient on uranium reacted with nitrogen at several temperatures between 500" and 915°C. Several samples of uranium used in U-N gas-metal reactions by Mallett and Gerds were available for X-ray diffraction study of phase composition through the diffusion gradient. X-ray diffraction data were obtained using filtered iron radiation at intervals through the diffusion layer of the several samples on filings or turnings at approximately 0.001 in. increments down to the base metal. Representative X-ray diffraction patterns from various layers through the case on uranium after nitriding at 850°C are shown in Fig. 1. These data show that three different phases are present in the

During 1937 a program was begun to mechanize and modernize the then 28-year old Isabella mine of the Weirton Coal Co., which is on the Monongahela River, in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, at one edge of what is generally known as the Coke Region. Weirton Coal Co. is a subsidiary of the National Steel Corporation, and produces metallurgical grade coking coal for the Weirton Steel Co., Weirton, W. Va. Improvements subsequently made included a cleaning plant for washing the entire mine output, shovel-action track-mounted machines for mechanically loading all the coal, universal-type track-mounted cutting and shearing machines, post drills, 8-wheel mine cars of 10 tons capacity, cable-reel gathering locomotives and other auxiliary equipment. This paper presents the factors, reasons and results of decided changes from the mining system generally prevailing in the region, as well as abandonment of selective mining practices in favor of complete seam extraction. Coal-seam Conditions Fig. 1 illustrates the Pittsburgh coal seam on the property. Cover over the seam averages 450 ft., and 675 ft. is the maxi- mum. Main roof varies from very weak to medium strong; usually it disintegrates rapidly on exposure to air. The "wild" coal makes a fairly strong immediate roof if supported by crossbars and if unbroken affords a seal to the main roof. The draw slate is very weak and treacherous. The floor is characterized by numerous irregular bottom rolls, or "horsebacks," protruding from a few inches up to 3 ft. into the coal. Some are soft, but many are hard and flintlike. Although the bottom slate usually is hard, the underlying fire clay causes it to buckle and heave readily with any moderate increase in roof pressure or where damp. As a whole, the bottom is weaker than the main roof. The coal is characterized by numerous closely jointed face and butt cleats and a woody, springy nature when shot, both having a decided influence on face practices. As shown in Fig. I, at both the top and bottom of the main coal seam is a layer of coal of higher ash and sulphur content than the body of coal in the middle. Factors That Influence the Mining System Equipment was bought and organization for mechanical loading was made on the basis of working each mechanical unit as near its full capacity as possible, to lessen investment cost and obtain best operating efficiency. This led to combination double and triple-shift operation at the start, and, very shortly, to all sections being triple shifted.

The surface, gain boundary, and twin boundary energies, as well as the surface diffusion coefficient, of cobalt were determined from tests at 1354°C in pure hydrogen. A value of 1970 ergs per sq cm was calculated for the surface energy, using the zero creep method. It was possible to measure the creep strains at room temperature because the phase transformation was accompanied by negligible irreversible strain and no kinking. Established techniques based on interference microscopy were used to obtain values for the other three properties. The gain boundary and twin boundary energies were 650 ad 12.7 ergs per sq cm, respectively, while a value of 2.75 x l0 sq cm per sec was determined for the surface dufusion coefficient. In the course of a general study of cobalt and cobalt-base alloys, information was required about the surface energy of cobalt. Hence, the present program was undertaken to measure the interfacial free energy, or, briefly, the surface energy, of the solid-vapor interface of cobalt. The microcreep method was selected for this measurement because other surface properties could also be determined from the accompanying thermal grooving at grain boundaries and twin boundaries. A brief summary of the methods for determining the various surface properties follows. At very high temperatures and under applied stresses too small to initiate slip, small-diameter wires will change in length by the process of diffu-sional creep described by Herring.1 The wires acquire the familiar bamboo structure and increase or decrease in length in direct proportion to the net force on the specimen. For a specimen experiencing a zero creep rate, the applied load, wo, necessary to offset the effects of the surface energy, y,, and grain boundary energy, y b, is given by the relation: where r is the wire radius and n is the number of grains per unit length of wire. The first results obtained from wire specimens were reported by Udin, Shaler, and Wulff.' udin3 later corrected these results for the effect of grain boundary energy. The grain boundary energy is determined from measurements of the dihedral angle 8 of the groove which develops by thermal etching at the grain boundary-free surface junction. For an equilibrium configuration: Measurements of the angle 8 can be made on the creep specimens4'5 or on sheet material, as was done in this investigation by a method employing interference microscopy.= If the vapor pressure is low, the rate at which grain boundary grooves widen is determined primarily by surface diffusion and, to a lesser extent, by bulk diffusion. The surface diffusion coefficient, D,, is obtained from interferometric measurements of the groove width as a function of the annealing time, t. As predicted by Mullins~ and verified by experiment, the distance, w,, between the maxima of the humps formed on either side of the grain boundary increases in proportion to if grooving proceeds by surface diffusion alone. For this case: where fl is the atomic volume and n is the number of atoms per square centimeter of surface. When volume diffusion also contributes to the widening, the surface diffusion contribution can be extracted from the data by the method described by Mullins and shewmon.8 Where a pair of twin boundaries intersects a free surface, a groove with an included angle of A + B (using the groove figure and notations of Robertson and shewmong) forms by thermal etching at one twin boundary-free surface junction. If the "torque terms", i.e., the terms in the Herring10 equations describing the orientation dependence of the surface energy, are sufficiently large, an "inverted groove" with an included angle of 360 deg-A'-B' develops at the other intersection. The angles A + B and A' + B' are measured interferometrically. When the angle, , between the twinning plane and the macroscopic surface plane is near 90 deg, the twin boundary energy is calculated from the relation: 1) EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES Five-mil-diam wire containing 56 parts per million impurities was used for making ten creep specimens. These specimens had about 15 mm gage lengths with appended loops of wire and carried loads (the specimen weight below the midpoint of the gage length) ranging from 3.7 to 149.8 mg. The wires were hung inside a can made from 99.6 pct pure cobalt sheet. Beneath the wires were placed small specimens of 20-mil-thick, 99.9982 pct pure cobalt sheet from which the relative twin boundary and grain boundary energies and the surface diffusion coefficient were measured. All the specimens were annealed at a temperature of 1354" i 3°C which is 92 pct of the absolute melting point of cobalt. The furnace atmosphere was 99.9 pct pure hydrogen that was purified further by a Deoxo catalytic unit, magnesium perchlorate, and a liquid-nitrogen cold trap. As a precautionary measure the gas was then passed through titanium alloy turnings which were heated to 280" to 420°C and replaced after every test period. The hydrogen was maintained at a

THE application of indium to bearings was first advocated by C. F. Smart1 in 1938, for the purpose of inhibiting corrosion of certain bearing alloys. He found that a thin layer of indium plated on the bearing surface and subsequently diffused at elevated temperatures markedly decreased the rate of corrosion in lubricating oils containing organic acids. Most of his work was done on cadmium-base alloys, although he showed that the treatment was also effective for copper-lead and other alloys. Since their introduction, indium-treated bearings have found considerable use, particularly in connection with airplane motors.2 Undoubtedly the effectiveness of the indium plate in resisting corrosion depends upon its relative concentration on the bearing surface after the diffusion treatment and after prolonged use at operating temperatures. Some diffusion experiments were made on a number of base metals that had been indium plated, to determine the depth of penetration after heating for reasonably long periods of time. As only the practical aspects were desired, no attempt was made to determine actual diffusion constants. METHOD Two different series of experiments were carried out to study the diffusion of indium into several base metals. Cast cylinders about one-inch diameter were machined to 0.750-in. diameter, so as to remove all surface imperfections, and final finishing was done with oo sandpaper. The original diameters were very carefully measured with micrometers and then a layer of indium was electrolytically deposited on the cylinders from a sulphate bath.3 In the first series of experiments, about 0.002 in. of indium was deposited and diffusion was carried out at 150°C. for a period of 500 hr. in a thermostatically con- trolled electric oven. After the diffusion period, successive layers were machined from the specimens and analyzed spectro- graphically and chemically-the spectro- graphic examination serving as a guide to determine which layers should be chemically analyzed. Apparently there was some surface oxidation of the indium plate due to the long heat-treatment, which may have had some effect on the diffusion. Also, the cadmium alloy showed some incipient melting, which probably was caused by the formation of a low-melting eutectic. To eliminate these factors, another series of experiments was carried out by heating in an electrically heated, automatically controlled, oil bath at lower temperature. The preparation of the specimens was the same as before except that a layer of indium 0.0001 in. thick, an amount commonly used commercially on bearings, was deposited on each of the cylinders. Diffusion was carried out at l20°C. for a period of 200 hours.

The area discussed in this paper, commonly known as the West Texas district, is easily divisible into three geologic provinces, the Midland Basin to the east, the Delaware Basin to the west and the West Texas structural platform separating these two. Production in Garza, Scurry, Mitchell, Howard, Glasscock, Irion, Reagan and central Crockett counties is associated with the east flank of the Midland Basin. That in Loving and Reeves counties is associated with the Delaware Basin. All other production and developments discussed in this paper belong to the province of the West Texas structural platform. Because of certain developments that have occurred during the past year, it has been found necessary to slightly revise one of the fields as grouped by Mr. Reith in last year's paper1. The Scarborough-Leck field has been broken down as follows (Table 1): The Leck field is shown separately because it is producing from dolomite; while the Scarborough area, producing from sand, is regrouped and designated as " Scarborough-Kermit-Halley," which includes the producing sand belt across Winkler County from Ward County to New Mexico. It is believed that this is a more logical division of Winkler County and that considerable future work will be avoided by making this change before further production figures have accumulated under the present set-up. A number of new fields are listed in Table 1, some of which may represent extensions of other produeing arras. The authors, however, are inclined to believe that they represent new fields. In either event, less work is involved ill adding two areas together, if they later prove to be one, than in attempting to separate a maze of production data into two fields after they have been erroneously carried as one for a number of years. The Howard-Glasscock field is designated in this review as the Chalk-Roberts field and the Denman production on the Howard-Mitchell County line is included in the Iatan field. It has been stated, by Sir James M. Barrie, that "the man of science appears to be the only man who has something to say, just now-and the only man who does not know how to say it". The friendly jibe of the novelist contains enough exaggeration to make it humorous to the followers of Huxley and Spencer; but could any litterateur poke similar fun at the exponents of the avowedly utilitarian branches of science-the men of technology-without suggesting an unpleasant truth? Indeed the engineer does bungle language deplorably. He makes a fetish of efficiency, yet he shows no regard for the effective use of one of his most important tools-the pen; he believes devoutly in accuracy, yet he employs an instrument of precision as carelessly as a small boy handles a gun. This inconsistency may be due to causes such as were indicated by the Academic Senate when it undertook to explain the defective writing of the; students in this university.* The Senate suggested that the student is "constantly subjected by his environment to the unedifying influence of myriad examples of poor English", and that he is also affected by "a certain public prejudice against correctness of expression ". With these statements most of us will agree. Our local newspapers, for instance, tend to spoil the student's taste for good English; later in life, as an engineer, his daily contact with illiterate men inclines him to careless speech and slovenly writing. RepressuRIng, or gas drive, was first tried in the Seal Beach oil field during the fall of 1927, and was carried on until the spring of 1928. This experiment in the Upper or Bixby zone was highly successful in proving the feasibility of compressing gas to high pressures and also showed great increases in production. The project was discontinued because there were not enough wells to protect the property lines. In the development of the second or Selover zone, many more wells were drilled and after 2½ years of production the gas was depleted so that all producing wells in the zone were either pumping or on gas-lift. Edge-wat'er encroachment and the deepening of wells on neighboring properties to a third zone practically isolated the lease, so that during the spring of 1929 it was considered feasible to repressure the Selover zone on the Bixby lease of the Continental Oil Co. (Marland). As shown on Fig. 1, the main Seal Beach structure is an elongated dome with a northwest-southeast trend, and the north flank is cut by a fault nearly parallel to the axis of the structure. Bixby well No. 24 was chosen for the injection well on account of its location, as it is backed up by the fault and is surrounded by wells that protect the property lines. The results of the test made in the Bixby zone indicated that an injection well on the flanks of the structure would drive oil quickly to up-structure wells but would have a tendency to cause by-passing, while the drive to down-structure wells would be slower but more evenly distributed. Preferably the injection well would have been located on top of the dome but property divisions made this inadvisable. Well 24 had been completed in November, 1928, but on account of gas depletion the well failed to flow naturally. On gas-lift the well had an initial production of 1000 bbl. of oil with 30 per cent. emulsion. This well is 4825 ft, deep, penetrating 200 ft. of oil-bearing formation. COULOMB' and Coulomb and Lacombe2,3 have recently discussed secondary recrystallization in soft iron (99.5 pct Fe). They found that the appearance of this phenomenon was dependent on both the presence of impurities and the thickness of sheet specimens. They concluded that impurities such as carbon, sulfur, and oxygen in the soft iron stabilized the matrix structure and allowed growth of a few grains of specific orientations. They also found that secondary recrystallization ceased when the final thickness was small and attributed this complete inhibition of growth in thin sheet to the restraining action of thermal grooves. When purer iron (99.99 pct Fe) was used, normal grain growth but not secondary recrystallization was obtained. On the other hand it is known that the necessary stabilization of the matrix structure for secondary recrystallization in high-purity silicon iron probably does not depend on impurities but more likely results from the specimen thickness effect of Beck et al.,4 according to evidence and ideas advanced by Walter and Dunn,5,6 and Detert.7 Furthermore, Mullins8 has indicated that if a gas-metal surface energy difference exists across a grain boundary equal to or greater than about 3 pct of the grain boundary energy, then such a grain boundary should not become stuck. MAJOR considerations in the production of stainless steel are the utilization of stainless steel scrap and the recovery of chromium and other metallic values from the initial furnace charge. The decarburization of a bath of molten chromium steel with gaseous oxygen is usually accompanied by a considerable amount of metallic oxidation. Since recovery of this metal from the slag may require substantial expenditures of time and materials for slag reduction, holding metallic oxidation to the minimum consistent with good operating practice is generally desirable. The important role of temperature in minimizing metallic oxidation is illustrated by Fig. 1, taken from the results of Hilty, Healy, and Crafts,' who established the quantitative relations connecting the amounts of chromium, manganese, and iron oxidized during the oxidizing period of chromium steel heats with the composition of the initial charge and the temperature and composition of the molten bath after oxidation. Higher temperatures after the oxygen blow result in lower metallic oxidation. Although high temperatures are desirable for minimizing metallic oxidation, practical operating considerations limit the degree to which they can be employed. Excessively high temperatures or prolonged operation at moderately high temperatures may cause serious damage to the furnace refractories, so that a compromise must be effected. The problem, therefore, is one of controlling the oxidizing period of chromium steel heats to the shortest time at the highest practical temperature. The most effective tool the steel melter has for attaining high temperature while decarburizing a chromium steel heat is now commonly considered to be the oxygen lance with an adequate supply of gaseous oxygen. In order for the tool to be effective, however, the heat resulting from the oxidation of carbon, chromium, silicon, manganese, and iron in the bath must exceed the heat losses from the furnace. General recognition, of this principle has stimulated a trend toward faster injection of oxygen. For example, Pachaly2 proposed a high temperature at the start of the oxygen blow or a high rate of oxygen input as a means of obtaining the desired carbon level with high chromium recovery. On the other hand, limited understanding of the specific effects of oxygen input rate has hampered development of optimum practices. As part of a broad study of the metallurgy of chromium steel melting, therefore, the Linde Air Products Co. and the Electro Metallurgical Co. at their Metals Research Labo-ratories have evaluated the heat-balance during the oxidizing period in terms of oxygen input rate. The evaluation has then been related to factors such as temperature increase, metallic oxidation, oxygen Utilization, etc., and extrapolated to include a wide

INTRODUCTION The selection of trackless equipment for underground mining can be a complex engineering problem due to the wide range of equipment sizes and operating modes. Computer simulation is particularly useful in estimating the performance of different systems for specific rock- handling problems. A hybrid simulator, incorporating some of the features of deterministic and stochastic simulation, was developed in order to handle not only queuing delays at loading and dumping points, but a1 so traffic interferences. Any number of vehicles can operate in any one of four basic modes (LHD, LAF, FEL, HFC) in parallel or in series. If the units use common roadways, loading and dumping points, certain operating delays will occur and be registered by the simulator and thus give a better evaluation of the marginal productivity of each additional unit. Based on a typical layout of drawpoints and ore passes for the sub-level stoping method, productivity and operating costs of different rock-handling systems will be examined. 1 . COMPUTER SIMULATION Numerous applications of computer simulations are reported in the 1iterature for various mining problems. Depending on the complexity of the system to be studied, simulation models were conceived with different degrees of sophistication. Three different types of simulators are generally recognized: stochastic, deterministic, and hybrid. Stochastic or Monte Carl o simulation randomly generates items, transactions, or events from some population defined by a frequency distribution and produces some expected future situations. Because this type of simulation is governed by the input of probability distributions, it requires a detailed knowledge of the system to be simulated; it implies expensive and time-consuming studies and reports to gene- rate this input information. A major short- coming of stochastic techniques is in new equipment evaluation, where the lack of data is unavoidable, and in new system design where the conditions are outside the range of the known historical behavior of the equipment. However, probabilistic simulation is almost essential for the study of cyclic queues and traffic problems. Deterministic simulation studies a system by generating performances on the basis of the mechanical capabilities of the vehicles and the physical limitations of the mining scheme. It is based on the engineering principle that the engine converts its energy into a rimpull at the wheels, which is in turn opposed by the rolling resistance and the grade of the ground; the machine is accelerated or decelerated until the tractive and resistive forces are in equilibrium, at which point it moves at constant speed. The information required by this technique, such as rimpull charts and equipment weight, is readily available from equipment suppliers. However, equipment performance at the mining site is also dictated by human and environmental conditions and changes with time and usage. For this reason, deterministic simulation generally overestimates the system capabilities; these must then be adjusted by efficiency factors based on observation and experience. Recently, hybrid simulation models, using both stochastic and deterministic techniques, have been built with some of the events generated stochasticly and others being deterministic. This compromising approach originated at the Pennsylvania State University. O'Nei1 (1966) designed a simulator for truck-and- shovel operations that allows for transportation from multiple faces to mu1tiple destinations. Each truck performs according to its mechanical capabilities while its loading and dumping time and its load fluctuate according to specific probability distributions. A major advance in the simulation of mining systems is due to Sanford's model (1969) of underground coal mining operations. The originality of the model is in the use of an Executive System Control which sets up the initial system, de- fines the operation conditions , and instructs continuously four sub-assemblies representing shuttle cars, trains, continuous miners , and conveyors, which in turn generate a feed-back of their movement to the Executive Control System for further instructions. The model has enough flexibility to simulate simultaneous and sequential jobs that characterize any dynamic system. Sanford's early work evolved slowly to what is known today as the Under- ground Materials Handling Simulator for coal mining (Manula, 1974).
