EARTH-REISTIVITY measurements are often of service in obtaining information regarding geological formations, particularly when applied to structural problems. In such problems the masses of the various bodies are large, and have a corresponding effect on the average resistivity of the soil. Much work has been done using such measurements, but in general the method of interpretation employed is empirical. Since certain simple cases can be investigated mathematically, it appears to be quite sound to endeavor to apply the mathematical solutions to the practical results, in order to deduce from the latter such unknown quantities as depth. This paper deals with such a method of interpretation for the simple case of a single horizontal stratum. department, first as a practical miner, next. as rodman on the survey corps, of which he soon became chief, then draftsman and mining engineer in the company's office. In January, 1916, he was promoted to the position of district engineer in charge of mining engineering work. He became a member of this Institute in September, 1917. Captain Ba.llamy's military experience began at the same time as his engineering practice. He was a charter member of Company A, Engineers, N. G. P., which was organized ten years ago. He saw service on the Mexican border as First Lieutenant of this Company, and remained in that position until November, 1916. In July, 1917, he was again called into service and was sent to Camp Hancock, Ga., with the 103d Regiment of Engineers. Before joining this regiment he attended a school for officers at Fort Sill, Okla., where he received special training in field fortifications. In December, 1917, he was commissioned Topographical Captain on the Regimental Staff, and in April, 1918, preceded his regiment by about six weeks to France, where he again attended an officers' training school. He rejoined his regiment on July 15, near Chateau Thierry and was killed near Fismes on Aug. 9, 1918. Lieutenant Martin F. Bowles Martin F. BOWleS, born Apr. 25, 1893, at Bonne Terre, Mo., and graduated from the Neodesha, Kans., High School, had finished all but one month of a four-year course in metallurgical engineering at the Missouri School of Mines, Rolla, Mo., when on May 12, 1917, he entered the first Officers' Training Camp at Fort Riley, Kans. At the close of the training period, he was commissioned a Sccond Lieutenant and assigned to Co. B, 355th Infantry, 89th Division, and stationed at Camp Funston. He left this camp with his company on May 21, 1918, and sailed from an eastern port on June 4, ayriving in England on June 15, 1918. After a short stay at a rest camp there, he proceeded to France. On August 14, he wrote that he was with Battalion Headquarters as Gout Officer, 1st Battalion, 355th Infantry, 89th Division. The last letter received from him, dated September 2, was written in his dugout and contained the following: "Here it is 2.45 a. M. Sitting in a dugout waiting for some patrols to report back in, I am writing this by the light of two candles." He was killed in action on the night of Sept. 3, 1918. The letter of notifi-

The northeastern United States embraces that area of the Appalachian Mountains, and adjacent territory, beginning on the south at the Potomac River. It thus extends from the flat-lying Paleozoic terrane of the Appalachian plateau on the west, across the folded Paleozoics of the Great Valley and adjacent ridges (Paleozoic and Precambrian), over the Piedmont and New England metamorphic complex (mixed Paleozoic and igenous rocks), broken by the great Triassic rift remnants, onto the subdued coastal plain of Cretaceous and Tertiary sediments. Although not noted as a metal mining region, the area does contain numerous substantial and several outstanding mines, chiefly of the more prosaic metals, particularly iron, zinc, and copper, as well as many minor occurrences of these and a few additional items. These deposits occur to some extent in every subdivision of the area. The region to date (1966) has produced almost 500,000,000 tons of medium to lowgrade iron ore, especially magnetite, including ilmenitic magnetite; 50,000,000 tons of highgrade zinc ore; and 5,000,000 tons of lowgrade copper. In the past, it has yielded small amounts of chromite and nickel, and at present is a large producer of titanium. Precious metals are conspicuously absent, and so also are the Tertiary or Mesozoic igneous phenomena so commonly associated with mines of the West. Experimental evidence in recent years shows that nickel coated hydrogen reduced tungsten powder can be sintered to 98 pct of theoretical density at 1100°C. New data indicate that the sintering rate is the same for nickel contents ranging from 0.125 wt pct (mon-atomic layer) to 5.0 wt pct Ni coated on 0.561. tungsten powder. Nickel tungsten made by coreduction from oxides sinters in a kinetically similar way, but the rate tends to increase with higher nickel contents. The activation of sintering can be accomplished with a minimum amount of nickel if coated powder is used. Transverse rmpture strength was found to increase in specimens containing 0.25 pct Ni as density increased during the initial stage of the carrier-phase sintering process. Upon the onset of grain growth in the final stage, strength was found to decrease. With increasing nickel contents up to 4 pct, strength increased. Maximum strengths in three-point loading were observed at 73,000 psi for 0.25 pct Ni and 93,000 psi for 5 pct Ni. These were comparable to that of massive tungsten recrystal-lized in the presence of nickel and tested in the same way. The results were sensitive to the mode of powder treatment and ductility was negligible in all cases. The study and application of sintered bodies of nickel and tungsten is not new; however, the analysis of the mechanism by which small additions of nickel increase the sintering rate of tungsten promises to Contribute new information regarding sintering theory in general. Initial experimental evidence was presented by the authors showing that nickel-coated hydrogen-reduced tungsten powder may be sintered to 98 pct of theoretical density at 1100°C in 16 hr.' Simultaneously, a kinetic analysis of the process showed that it took place in two distinct stages. In the first stage, nickel evidently served as a carrier phase through which tungsten atoms could move. This stage was kinetically similar to the 'solution-precipitationo step postulated when the carrier phase is liquid3 although in the nickel tungsten case, there is no evidence of the existence of a liquid phase either in equilibrium phase relationships or in mi-crostructures at the temperatures under consideration. In the present work, new data for nickel-coated tungsten powder are offered in support of the proposed mechanism, and a more explicit study of the second stage of densification is presented. Concurrently, the sintering kinetics of these coated powders are compared to Ni-W powder made by coreduction of oxides. In this way the present work can be compared to earlier results in nickel activated sintering of tungsten in which the coreduction process was emplyed. The rapid increase, during the last few years, in the number and magnitude of applications of electric power-transmission to commer cial uses in this country, has been due principally to three causes: first, the ability and enterprise of those who have been identified with the progress of electrical industries, since electric illumination became an economic fact instead of a laboratory-experiment: sec ondly, the readiness of the American people to adopt new and ad vanced methods as soon as their superiority has been fairly demon strated; and thirdly, tile economy and flexibility of the apparatus employed, when properly designed and constructed, and installed under suitable conditions. Basing our judgment on the world's advance in scientific devel opments during the past century, we may reasonably conclude that in no other country would the pioneeis of electrical invention, whose names have now become household words, have received the prompt and plentiful financial support which has enabled them to inaugurate undertakings of exceptional magnitude, even in this era of tremendous monetary organizations. And, on the other hand, we have seen, in the numerous financial and engineering failures inseparable from such rapid development, the natural results of a too implicit faith in electrical omnipotence. It is not to be wondered at that conservative engineers have been slow to adopt this new and mighty agent in the solution of exten sive problems, and under circumstances where a single failure means not only a greater or less financial sacrifice, but the loss, in a greater or less degree, of professional reputation. BECAUSE it is necessary that the powders made for casting have a magistery of salt water, I wish now to teach you to prepare the salt that must form this magistery, for without it these powders would not have the toughness to hold themselves together when they are dry. In short, you take the quantity [119v] of salt that you need to prepare and put it in a rough pot, either baked or, if it suits you better, raw but well dried. This is completely covered with a lid or is luted with well- made moulding clay. Then it is encircled with brick ends at a distance of three dita, like a drying furnace. This space is filled with good charcoal; fire is applied and it is left to stand until all the charcoal is consumed by itself* Then you take that quantity of this burned or rather melted salt which you wish to use for moistening the clay and which you think can be dissolved in the water so that it wd remain very salty. It is boiled in a pot with water and then left to stand. After it has settled, your powder is moistened with it and used for moulding. When you see by testing it that the powder stands up as you wish, it is good. If not, give it some more of this water again and continue until you see that it holds enough. For without this magistery it would return to the dryness that it had before as a powder, and you could not use it without fear that it would fall from the Games. In this way this earth, either natural or artificial, is prepared and made ready, and it is used as the need occurs.

I. HISTORY OF OIL DEVELOPMENT IN MEXICO THE occurrence of oil or "tar" in Mexico was mentioned as early as the seventeenth century by Friar Sagahun, who gives the Indian name "chapopote," by which these asphalt seepages are still called. This asphalt was apparently used, as it has been used by primitive people in many parts of the world, in religious ceremonies and for medicinal purposes. Travellers also report that the ruins in Yucatan and the pyramids in southern Mexico show traces of the use of "chapopote" as a building cement.1 DeGolyer says that the first attempt to exploit oil or gas in Mexico in a commercial way is shown by the records of the Memoria de Fomento of 1865, when permission was granted to a Senor Ildefonso Lopez to exploit the deposits of petroliferous substances in the San Jose de Ias Rusias area in the State of Tamaulipas. Other concessions follow, and probably refer to surface seepages which occur in that district. This was several years after the discovery of oil in Pennsylvania. In 1868, a well 125 ft. deep was drilled by a company organized in Mexico City, in what is now known as the Furbero district, and a little oil was refined there. In 1873, residents of Tampico denounced seepages along the Tamesi River, and asphalt was mined near Tempoal in the Canton of Tantoyuca. No drilling was attempted. But between 1880 and 1883 several shallow wells were drilled for oil in Mexico, two of them being near the present Potrero de Llano field west of Tuxpam. The wells were drilled by a Boston company with Canadian rigs, and are said too have reached a depth of about 400 ft., while one is reported to have flowed. Several other abortive attempts were made to drill for oil between 1885 and the beginning of the present century, about which time the Mexican, Petroleum & Liquid Fuel Co., Ltd., in which Cecil Rhodes was interested drilled 24 wells unsuccessfully, several of them as deep as 1,500 ft., in the State -

The commercial availability of electrolytic manganese has greatly changed the position of manganese as a nonferrous alloying metal. Manganese metal commercially available up to about ten years ago was reduced with either silicon or aluminum and contained substantial amounts of the oxides of these metals and other impurities. Manganese was accordingly not available as an alloy base and its addition to copper-base and nickel-base alloys was generally limited to a manganese content of a few per cent. Several special alloys like manganin contained up to 12 pct of manganese.

When an oil operator becomes a party to a proration agreement he may wonder, with good cause, whether production prorated .today is merely deferred until tomorrow or whether oil might be lost. Various types of evidence obtained from production records when studied quantitatively are of great assistance in arriving at definite conclusions. A study of individual examples cited in this paper leads towards some solution of the problem, particularly when they are considered in the aggregate. Many production curves on various pay horizons were studied. A disappointingly large number of these were of contributory value, but inconclusive. However, there were enough curves of similar type from the Wilcox sand at Earlsboro, Bowlegs, Seminole City, the Cromwell horizon at Little River, and the Simpson dolomite at Valley Center, Kansas, from which reasonably definite conclusions were drawn. Assuming that deferred production is later made up with no increase in ultimate recovery, a curve (Fig. 1) shows the normal flowing and pumping life of a composite well, contructed by the family curve method. The initial production of the well shown is 1700 bbl. daily and the allowed production is 25 per cent. On this basis the average daily allowed rate for the first month is 425 bb1., or the area BCDE, which is equivalent to the area AFDG under the normal decline curve. The potential production for the second month is 1500 bbl. and the allowed production 375 bbl. daily. By this procedure a potential curve for each succeeding month is obtained (points A, H, I, J and K). If the well is opened it should produce somewhere near its potential curve for a short period and then decline at a more rapid rate than the potential curve. This theoretical analysis is basic. Actual examples exhibiting all points raised by the ideal curve are rare. The production of sand in an oil well increases operating costs because of abnormal wear in subsurface equipment, the necessity for frequent cleanouts, and the need for a means of disposing of the sand. Moreover, removal of sand from the zone can bring about the creation of cavities from which bodies of formation, sand or shale, may slough into the hole, endangering the shutoff, impeding production or collapsing the liner. The procedure known as gravel packing is attracting attention as a means of controlling these factors and contributing to the productive life of a well. That gravel packing is now substantially beyond the preliminary stage on the Pacific Coast is reflected in the 191,000 bbl. of oil produced monthly by the 66 gravel-packed wells in 11 different producing sectors. Reasons fob Gravel Packing Gravel packing, if properly carried out, can be expected to provide the following benefits: 1. Prevent the movement of sand and thus eliminate sand production and sand fills, and prevent the formation of cavities. 2. Provide a practical, relatively inexpensive, large-diameter hole, which will provide well-known theoretical advantages. 3. Support the walls of the hole by completely filling the space between the liner and the formation, regardless of its irregularities, and afford a support for liners. 4. Provide for more efficient pumping operations in wells by: (a) possibly utilizing the gravel as a gas trap in pumping gaseous fluids, (b) allowing deep submergence of the pump into the oil zone. In a conventional well—that is, where the liner is set in an open hole-. even though perforation sizes are chosen according to known rules based on analysis of sand grains from samples from the zone, there is likely to be some production of sand. INTRODUCTION The Climax Mine is located on the continen¬tal divide, on Fremont Pass, about 145 Km south west of Denver, Colorado. Molybdenum, along with the by products, tungsten, tin, and pyrite are produced from both the open pit and under¬ground operations. The underground operation utilizes a panel caving mining system, and produces in excess of 27,000 mt per day. In the mid 1930's, the Climax mine began changing from a grizzly level layout to the slusher drift system which is still in use to¬ day. Over the years, the slusher drift layout has been refined to correct, improve, and sim¬plify minor operational problems. In common with most older hardrock mines, the development equipment used at Climax was the standard rail mounted, pneumatic mining machinery. This type of equipment remained in use, at least to some degree, until about four years ago. For production, 112 Kw electric slushers were used, while mine traffic was rail with trolley locomotives. The opposition is all kinds. There are extremists. There are quiet, sensible sounding folk who can twist numbers and facts to make their point. But they are all out to shut you down! Some of them are genuinely concerned about miners' impact on the environment. Others are just anti- society, anti-big business - small is beautiful - live naturally. The opportunity for them to make those statements on television was provided by us, the Uranium Public Affairs Task Force, as part of a media tour of the State of Idaho in May. We fielded four representatives of the industry and got 25 hours of television coverage, 22 hours of radio coverage, and print coverage by every paper in Idaho. The tour included several debates, and these clips are from two of them. Our folks creamed them! This one was so upset that he ran off the set while his mike was still plugged in, trailing studio equipment behind him. But we don't always have the opportunity to rebut them. They are making these statements all the time, everywhere they can. They have learned their trade well. They use the hearing process like A1 Hirt uses the trumpet. If the process of intervention should shut us down or prevent us from getting a license, so much to the good. But even if it doesn't - they win - for it causes delay - delay costs money and so does complying with regulation. If they can make us uneconomic, and that's not too hard to do these days, they have won. Regulation restricts the decision process. Any time the decision process IS restricted, you face the possible loss of a more economic alternative. They are out to pile every regulation on you they can and every delay they can. Initiatives! They came after us - the uranium industry - in South Dakota and Montana last year. They won in Montana. We tried to reverse it in the legislature, but they were too frightened of public reaction to do it. They did put it on the ballot for reversal in November of '82. That puts it squarely up to us to influence the public so we can win a campaign. There will be more initiatives, and at local levels as well as at state. We must join together and win! The public generally supports the continued operation of nuclear power plants. They about split on whether to build more. But they strongly support regulating the industry more stringently. Every survey reflects concern about safety and the desire for the government to take responsibility and regulate. You and I know that regulation nearly always adds cost, and only sometimes increases safety. We need to influence the creation of regulation. We need to accept responsible regulation and fight that which is counter-productive. To win in hearings, to win initiatives, to win in getting responsible regulation, we need public support. We need an informed, understanding, and supportive public. To accomplish this, we need two kinds of efforts. The first is to reach the people at the local level with local representatives of our industry. Informal conversations at church, PTA, cocktail parties, whatever. Presentations to Kiwanis Clubs, League of Women Voters, church groups - wherever we can. Facts, information in printed form, to these same local audiences with the credibility of the local sources. The second is to reach mass audiences through the media. Positive media. This can be done by advertising, but it is very expensive. We have to look to influencing the reporters and editors to get more balanced and accurate reporting. We need to get free time - interviews, debates, letters to the editors, etc. The Uranium Public Affairs Task Force was created last year to provide tools for you to use to reach these audiences (it is affiliated with the Atomic Industrial Forum). Twenty-two companies provided money and man- power. A consultant, Denver Research Group, was retained to produce materials. In this Phase I effort, we first researched what issues were of greatest concern and what were felt to be the greatest needs in materials. We determined that we did not have the funds to go out and do the job for the industry, so we decided to develop tools for the Industry to go out and do the job for itself. From the research, we determined what tools we should develop for you to use. We first developed a set of the quest- ions most likely to be asked of you and the issues most likely to be thrown up to you. We have developed a loose-leaf notebook. Each page contains one of those questions or issues, a short verbatim response that you can use, a short discussion of the subject, and references you can cite or research for further information. It is organized by subject: tailings, water radiation, etc. This book is an extremely handy tool for anyone in the industry. Each uranium location should have at least one.

The sheet-ground deposits of the Tri-State district, because they are fairly uniform in thickness (7 to II ft.)—rather flat, with an easy dip to the west—and cover a large acreage, offered a problem of improved transportation. Heading advance in this kind of mine is very rapid and track haulage requires a larger crew of trackmen than do other mines, and a heavy investment in track. The use of some type of rubber-tired truck equipment for underground haulage was under consideration for some time by the Eagle-Picher Mining and Smelting Co. The nature of some ore bodies made them not adaptable to truck haulage and some mines that did offer possibilities were equipped with other types of haulage, and the expected savings by the use of trucks did not offset the loss of investment that would be incurred in discarding other equipment. The decision was made to sink a new shaft, designed for skip hoisting, on the Blue Goose ore body, and then develop truck equipment. Developing Tractors and Trailers A study was made of internal-combustion engines for power units in the tractors, but the extreme difficulty of controlling air circulation, and the heavy cost of drilling large churn drill holes for blower installations, led to the adoption of a tractor with a storage battery. The storage-battery tractor that was on the market for mine haulage was impossible to obtain because all were needed for defense work. Several standard electric-truck chassis were purchased and rebuilt in the Eagle-Picher shops. The steering wheel was shortened and set vertical, permitting the driver's seat to be moved forward, and the frame was shortened enough to take the battery box and the fifth wheel support that carried the gooseneck of the dump trailer. The fifth wheel, or turntable, is of the ball and socket type. Tig. I shows the ball fastened to the gooseneck. The socket is split to permit introduction of the ball and is held by through-bolts, and the socket is welded to a ½-in. plate, which in turn is attached to the tractor frame. Smaller wheels and tires were put on to reduce over-all height. If it had been necessary, the spring: could have been reversed, or taken off entirely, to gain additional clearance. The tractors are equipped with 48-cell, 23-plate, 400-A.H. batteries. With the initial tonnage and mileage, the batteries were about 50 per cent down at the end of a shift. Tractors have truck tires 7.50 by 20, 8-ply, front and rear, the rear being dud. After four months of use, the .tires are beginning to show signs of failure.* In

There has been no enterprise undertaken in this and adjoining States which has attracted so much interest, or has been watched so closely as this, the first successful attempt to convert our ordinary high-phosphoric pig-iron into steel from native material. Our iron-masters have noticed intently every attempt to convert high-phosphorus pig-irons into steel by the Clapp-Grifith process in this country, and the basic process on the Continent, and studied the various patents aiming to accomplish the same purpose, and the various litigations arising among various patentees over their rival claitns; but up to August, 1887, nothing was done, and no move had been made to introduce any process for making steel. At the time above named, Mr. James Henderson, of New York, came to this place with a view of introducing his patent furnace and other metallurgical processes and appliances. After some delay and personal interviews between parties interested and the inventor, a party of gentlemen, all of moderate means, and entirely unacquainted with the manufacture of either steel or iron, decided to form themselves into a body corporate, known as the Henderson Steel and Manufacturing Company, with a capital stock of $20,000,

The Masjid-i-Suleiman Field The present producing unit, the Masjid-I-Suleiman, is an anticline some 20 miles in length by 4 miles in width, including three domes as so far proved. The producing horizon is a very open, dolomitic limestone, which, while showing much variation in texture and porosity, is so connected that the lowering of pressure in one section of the field quickly affects the whole area. The topography of the field is broken, with differences of well elevations of as much as 1100 ft. The depths to the limestone vary from about 800 to about 5000 ft. The closed-in pressure of the oil wells varies from zero to 50 lb. per sq. in. and that of the gas wells is about 450 Ib. Although the static oil level may be several hundred feet below ground level, in oil wells of high elevation, all the wells flow continuously or intermittently after they are once started—the majority continuously. The gas is very high in hydrogen sulfide in gas-oil wells of low pressure.

Introduction There is probably no field in which materials research has played a greater role than that of electronics. However, to trace present and future patterns of materials research in electronics is not an easy assignment, since this industry has a high degree of dynamism in its growth, and is busily engaged today in the scientific improbabilities of only recent yesterdays. On the other hand, this task seems especially appropriate since electronics is a truly frontier industry - one whose place in American industries has advanced from 50th prior to World War II to 6th in 1967, with sales of more than $22 billion. And this growth has been associated with the equally rapid progress of science and technology over the period - in particular with the emergence of materials science as a vital force in underscoring this progress. For several reasons this parallel growth is not too surprising. First, by its very definition electronics is a science that essentially deals with the nature, behavior, detection, generation, control and utilization of electrons in solids or at their surfaces. Second, in the electronics industry, systems are made of an integration of components, and these components with their interconnections are made of materials. Thus, the basic building blocks of systems are materials; and it has been largely the advances in materials research and technology that have led to new and improved devices and systems. It follows, therefore, that the broadening of the frontiers in electronics through the exploration of new territories is tantamount to scientific discovery and materials innovation to a degree found in no other major industrial activity. But to put this in the proper perspective of present and future materials trends, it would be appropriate first to survey historically the progress in electronics by pointing out major scientific discoveries and associated materials research patterns that have led directly to its tremendous growth. Then from this base we can consider recent trends in materials research that could form the basis for future progress in the electronics industry. In my review I shall examine the areas most familiar to me, so I must acknowledge at the outset that this survey is not all-inclusive.

An inventory of the mineral resources of a region is a most desirable basis for planning their systematic development. In the absence of appropriate samples upon which to base a reliable estimate of this inventory, investigators have resorted to a number of indirect approaches; the unit regional value concept forms the basis for one such approach. The produced resources of a region are a function of the inventory multiplied by the degree of intensity (some fraction between zero and one) of development of the resources. A convenient means of expressing this amount is to accumulate the weight and value of resource and to prorate the totals over the area represented by the unit sampled; i.e., weight and value per unit area or tonnes/km.2 and U.S. 1967 $/km.2. When this approach is used for the U.S.A., South Africa and Rhodesia the average value of (log.) U.S. 67$/km.2 for the states of the U.S.A. and South Africa are similar ($55,176 U.S.$67/km.2 and $52,538/km.2 respectively); whereas, Rhodesia is relatively underdeveloped (10,301 U.S.67$/km.2). On the other hand if the individual commodities are used as a basis for comparison, the U.S.A. shows the greatest diversity (67 commodities out of a possible total of 75) with South Africa next (50 commodities) and Rhodesia last with only 26 commodities. Since it is known that area and value are not simply related perhaps diversity is directly related to area. Again the kinds of commodities which have contributed the greatest value to the totals differs, with fuels (petroleum, coal and natural gas) predominating in the U.S.A. totals; whereas, South Africa and Rhodesia obtain their greatest contributions from gold, diamonds (S. Africa) coal and asbestos. In each case the greatest value of resources is produced from sedimentary rocks. As a somewhat different kind of example, consider a single resource (petroleum, the most valuable in the U.S.A.) over a large area (number of sampling units) the U.S.A. by state. Furthermore, assume that the model frequency distribution of the amount of petroleum (tonnes/km.2) is log normal. Then the present production fails to match the model first because 17 states (34% out of 50) have not produced petroleum. Of the remaining 33 states, Louisiana has produced the most (15,177 tonnes/km.2) and the frequency histogram is still skew. A spatial analysis of the distribution of the amount of petroleum by state shows that the samples (i.e., states) are not random; the non-producers and producers tend to cluster. It remains to be seen if this is indeed a true representation of the incidence of petroleum or is a function of the exploration philosophy currently in vogue.
