The stoichiometry, structure, and stability of the internzediate phases formed between zinc and some of the rare earth (RE) metals were systematically exarnined by means of a recording effusion balance and X-ray diffraction analyses. In the La-, Ce-, PY-, Nd-, and Y-Zu systems, at or below about 600 C, the following sequences of phases (REZnx) were found: La, x = 1, 2, 4.0, 5.25, 7.3, 17/2, 11, and 13.0;' Ce, x = 1, 2, 3, 11/3, 4.3, 5.25, 7.0, 17/2,* and 11; Pr,x = 1,2, 3, 11/3 ,* 4.3, 5.3(?), 7.0, 17/2,* and 11; Nd,x = 1,2, 3,* 11/3,* 4.3, 6.5, 8.5,* and 11; Y,x = 1,2,3, 11/3, 4.5, 5.0, 17/2,* and 12.* The structure types of all these phases were classified. In addition, lattice parameters were obtained for the first time for the pluses denoted by asterisks. In the absence of de tectable valency or electronegativity effects the systesnatic trends in the results have been ascribed to the effects of' the lanthanide contraction. For example, the maximum number of zinc atoms in the coordination polyhedron surrounding the RE atom decreases from twenty-four to twenty-two to twenty as the size of the RE atom decreases. THE structures and compositions of a great many intermetallic phases (e.g., the Laves phases) are known to be based primarily, but not exclusively, on the space-filling efficiency of various modes of packing together atoms of different sizes. The valencies and electronegativities of the constituent atoms are, however, also influential. In extreme cases hypothetical intermetallic phases which fulfill the efficient spacefilling requirements may not be present in the constitutional diagram because of thermodynamic instability brought about by the operation of valency or electronegativity factors. Hence, for a detailed study of the influence of atomic size on alloy structure and composition, it would be desirable to minimize variations of valency and electronegativity. The intermetallic phases formed by the rave earths (RE) with some common partner offer an excellent opportunity for isolating the effects of size from those of valency and electronegativity. The rare earths exhibit a large, but smooth, decrease in size (the lanthanide contraction) in the series from lanthanum to lutetium when inter comparison is made for a common valence state, e.g., isolated atoms or trivalent ions. The elements yttrium and scandium are frequently included as pseudo rare earths; their sizes place them in the vicinity of dysprosium and lutetium, respectively. The electronegativities of RE elements vary by less than 10 pet. The trivalent state is the most common; however, the well-known tendency of cerium, praseodymium, and terbium to achieve higher valencies, and of samarium, europium, and ytterbium to seek lower valencies, requires that caution be exercised in the assumption of equal valencies. In the present study the existence, constitution, and structure of each of the numerous intermediate phases formed by zinc with lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, or yttrium were examined systematically and in detail. The investigation was conducted by a recording effusion balance technique and by X-ray diffraction analysis. The results enrich our knowledge of the phase diagrams of these systems. In addition, they present some clear-cut evidences of the operation of the size factor alone. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Apparatus. The mode of operation of the recording effusion balance and its application to phase studies have been discussed in detail elsewhere.' In this work, an effusion cell containing a finely divided alloy was suspended within an evacuated tube from the beam of an analytical balance. The tube was immersed in a massive molten salt bath whose temperature was controlled to within 0.5o C during each experiment. The loss in weight of the alloy owing to effusion of zinc* was continuously recorded. Two effusion cells, 1/2 in. diam by 1 in. high, were machined from tantalum rods. Two orifices were drilled laterally into the walls of each cell. The orifice areas were determined by calibration with pure zinc: cell A had a total orifice area of 6.5 x 10-41 sq cm, and cell B an orifice area of 9.8 x 10-3 sq cm. By appropriate choices of orifice area and temperature the wide range of volatilities from pure zinc to pure rare earth metal could be investigated. X-ray diffraction powder photographs were made at room temperature with a 114.6-mm Debye-Scherrer camera with both filtered CuKa radiation and filtered CrKa radiation. Lattice parameters were refined by a computer-programmed least-squares analytical treatment which incorporated appropriate extrapolation techniques.2 Frequent use was also made of a special computer program3 designed to generate a powder pattern from an assumed structure in order to verify structural assignments. The area that produces Pennsylvania grade, which includes New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and a part of Ohio, increased its production in 1942 about 1,580,000 bbl. over that attained in 1941. Such an increase is substantial for this area, and measured in terms of increased output of lubricants, for which the crude is particularly suitable, it represents a needed arid worth-while addition to the lubricant resources of the United States. The year 1942 was a difficult operating period for most of the petroleum-producing areas in the United States, but the Appalachian region, owing principally to its location, type of operations, and crude value, suffered less from war influences than other areas. The state of Pennsylvania produced 17,823,870 bbl. of crude oil, which is approximately 63 per cent of the total production of Pennsylvania grade in the entire area. Production Bradford Field The Bradford field, which produces almost wholly by water-flooding methods, increased its production nearly 4000 bbl. per day over 1941 despite a very slight reduction in total number of wells completed. Well completions in the Bradford field (in both New York and Pennsylvania) includc both producing oil wells and water-intake wells. About half of the well completions are producing oil wells and the remaining half are water-intake or injection wells. About 10 per cent of the total well completions of the Bradford field were in Cattaraugus County, New York. No segregation of well completions is available, so that precise statistics cannot be given for New York and Pennsylvania.

The ceramic industry has to do with forming or molding articles of clay, and imparting to them their characteristic properties of permanence, strength and color by subjecting them to heat treatment in kilns. This heat treatment is commonly known as "firing" or "burning." The art of firing clay ware antedates the industrial use of coal; hence wood was the fuel first used, and the earliest kilns were built to burn wood. The majority of the clay ware produced today is fired in periodic kilns that are essentially enlarged structures similar to the earliest enclosed kilns; a kiln consists of a large chamber 16 to 32 ft. dia. (or rectangular) in which the ware is charged and fired either in direct contact with flame or hot gases from the fuel, or in saggers which shield the ware from direct contact with the gases. The fuel is burned in a number of small furnaces built in the thick wall that encloses the chamber; these furnaces are from 16 to 36 in. wide and from 3 to 5 ft. long; some of them have horizontal or sloping grates, but many have no grates; the last are called "dead-bottom" furnaces. The temperature necessary to mature the charge in the kiln varies for different clays; for some it is as low as 1800°, and for others as high as 2700" F. Wood was an ideal fuel for the low temperatures that were used in early kilns; it burns freely and produces a long, clean flame, which promotes uniform distribution of the heat in the kiln; it does not coke and so restrict the passage of air through the fuel bed; the ash does not melt in the fuel bed to form clinker; and the ash that is carried into the chamber and deposited on the charge does not contain iron and sulfur to discolor the clay. The extent of the ceramic industry now precludes the general use of wood in kilns, so that today this industry is one of the large users of bituminous coal, burning more than eight million tons annually in kilns. Manufacturing plants usually are at or near the source of clay, with deposits of coal suitable for kilns occurring near the clay. The cost of coal is the largest single item of expense in the manufacture of clay ware, and, because all coals are not equally suitable for the process, the careful selection of coal is important. In developing a mechanism for the solidification of metals from the melt, it has been proposed that solidification proceeds by the growth of platelets parallel to close packed planes. The evidence for this is based primarily on observations of decanted interfaces of lead1,2 and tin on which platelets 1 to 10 µ thick4 were observed. In recent observations of decanted eutectic alloys, 5,6 it was found that the eutectic structure on the decanted surface was markedly different than that of the bulk material, with the surface structure extending approximately 10 µ behind the interface.' This suggested that, at least for these experiments, a residual liquid layer 10 µ thick had been left on the decanted interface, which solidified subsequent to decanting. If a similar thickness of residual liquid was left on the decanted surfaces in the lead and tin observations referred to above, then it is questionable to what extent the observed platelets can be related to the solid-liquid interface before decanting. The purpose of the present investigation was to measure the thickness of the residual liquid layer on a decanted surface of tin, using relatively standard decanting procedures. The technique used was to add approximately 200 ppm of Tl204 (PI) to the melted portion of a high purity (99.999 pet) bar of tin, which was being progressively melted from one end, and then decant during melting. Since only the melt contained the radioactive tracer, the activity emanating from the decanted surface could be used as a measure of the thickness of the residual liquid layer. Progressive melting was carried out in the same fashion as single crystal growth, namely, in a horizontal graphite boat, in an argon atmosphere, using a moving furnace. The decanting was done in two ways; 1) removing the furnace and suddenly dropping the melt end of the boat, and 2) suddenly jerking the solid away from the liquid by the action of a falling weight (estimated peak acceleration 3 x 105 cm per sq sec), using a split graphite container. In all cases the melt was vigorously agitated by bubbling argon through it. The activity of the decanted surface was measured through an aperture 1.5 cm by 0.5 cm in a lead shield with an Anton tube geiger counter. Assuming that the active layer on the surface had the same concentration of Tl204 as the decanted liquid, the thickness of the layer could be determined from the measured activity of the decanted material, and the relationship between activity and material thickness. The latter was determined by rolling some of the decanted material into foil and measuring the activity of multiple layers of the foil. The activity At of material of thickness t (in mm) was determined to be A, = Ao(1 - e-22.5t) where Ao is the activity of the bulk material. The results of the measurements of the thickness of the residual liquid layer for six decants are given in Table I. The variation in t is attributed to variations in the decanting procedure and the rate of melting, the latter being difficult to control because of the vigorous agitation of the liquid. The rate of melting was in the order of 2 cm per hr, estimated from the position of the solid-liquid interface during melting. The results indicate that a residual liquid layer of the order of 10 µ in thickness is left on the decanted interface in agreement with the observation on eutectic alloys referred to above. Temperature dependence of the rate of recovery in zinc single crystals after a simple shear deformation at low temperature was investigated. Some tentative suggestions regarding the annealed and strain-hardened states of a crystal are discussed. RECOVERY may be defined as the gradual return of the mechanical and physical properties of strain-hardened metal to those characteristic of the annealed material; an increase in temperature increases the rate of recovery. The annealing process in strain-hardened polycrystalline metals is complicated by the inhomogeneity of strain which always exists in aggregates. Polygonization in bent regions of the crystals and growth of new almost strain-free grains starting at points of severe local distortion1-:' make it almost impossible to isolate and study the recovery process. Homogeneously strained single crystals, however, do not polygonize or re-crystallize and hence they can be used advantageously to study recovery. In such crystals strain hardening is completely removed by recovery alone. Since recovery is a process whereby certain lattice disturbances introduced by plastic flow are gradually reduced, a knowledge of the rate and temperature dependence of this process for various conditions of prestrain might be helpful in formulating a model of the strain-hardened state. For simplicity it seemed desirable to limit the type of prestrain to the simplest obtainable, i.e., simple shear strain. In the experiments to be described, recovery was studied by observing changes in the stress-strain curve of prestrained zinc single crystals held for various times at temperatures above that employed for straining. Single crystals were grown from the melt by a modified Bridgeman technique from Horse Head Special zinc 99.99 pct pure, and from spectrographically pure zinc 99.999 pct pure. They were grown as 1 in. diameter spheres and acid-machined' to the final specimen contour. The test section was a cylinder about 1/8 in. high and 3/4 in. in diameter. The conical sections adjacent to the test section were cemented into the grips so the load could be transmitted to the crystal as uniformly as possible. The specimens were oriented so that in testing the maximum shear stress was applied along one of the slip directions, [2110], in the (0001) plane. Details of the production and testing of such specimens have been presented.' Each test was carried out according to the following schedule: 1—The crystal was strained at — 50°C until it reached a maximum shear stress, ,,,. The strain rate was approximately 5 pct per min in all cases. 2—After straining, the crystal was unloaded before the temperature was changed. Unloading required about 3 min. 3—The temperature of the specimen was then increased from — 50°C to the temperature, T, of recovery. This change in temperature was completed in a time of less than 2 min. The specimen remained at temperature, T, for a time, t, which differed for the various specimens. 4—Thereafter the temperature was again reduced to — 50 °C in approximately 3 min. 5—While at —50°C, the stress-strain curve after recovery was obtained. 6—The specimen was then unloaded and annealed for 1 hr at 375 °C in a helium atmosphere to bring about complete recovery. Cooling to room temperature after anneal required 90 min. 7—The same crystal could be re-used for another test because the plastic properties after annealing closely duplicated those of the original crystal. The specimen was immersed during the test in a bath of methyl alcohol which, through a system of tubes, could be pumped through either of two heat exchangers to regulate the temperature; this was accomplished by circulating the liquid through coils immersed in a bath of acetone and dry ice for cooling or in a bath of warm water for heating. Test temperatures were thus maintained constant within ±1°C. The — 50°C temperature was low enough so that no measurable recovery occurred during unloading and reloading. The stress-strain curve continued after recovery along a path below, but approximately parallel to, the path of a curve obtained in an uninterrupted test. As a result of research work done during the planning of the Kokkola zinc plant it was found that a very efficient cementation of impurities from the suspension obtained after leaching copper and cadmium cakes was achieved by adding zinc dust to the batch without filtration after the leaching. All elements nobler than cadmium are precipitated with the exception of lead, which must be removed in a separate step. Using pure zinc dust, free from noble metals, the cadmium sponge produced will only contain elements that can be re- moved from cadmium by meltrefining. The process is thus : 1. Leaching and purification 2. Removal of lead (with BaCO3) 3. Precipitation of cadmium sponge with pure zinc dust 4. Meltrefining of briquetted sponge with NaOH for removal of Zn (and others) The paper deals with the removal of the most critical elements, i.e. Co, Ni, As, Sb, Cu, Pb, T1 in the liquid phase and Zn and T1 in the melt. A survey is also given of the behaviour of most of the other elements normally found in Cd raw material, such as Ge, Te, Se, Sn, In, Ga. It is shown that in most cases the benefit of an electrolysis in Cd production is very limited. In Kokkola 99.998% Cd is achieved by this method, but in favourable cases it may be possible to come quite close to five nines.

Multiple seam mining has been studied and writ- ten about extensively in the past and in the latest review of the subject in 1956 David Stemple covered it exhaustively. The present discussion has to do with only one phase of the problem-"The effects on upper seams when the lower seams have been mined first." The study presented here is based on observations made in mining operations in southern West Virginia and adjoining areas of Virginia and Kentucky during the past 43 years. These observations are largely confined to the Pocahontas coalfields of southern West Virginia which have, since 1883, produced well over one billion tons of coal from an area of about 300 sq miles and where multiple seam mining has been active, or is now active, at more than 40 operations. The observations and conclusions as to the effects on upper seams when lower seams have previously been mined are therefore related only to the local coalfields in the area of the three states named but I believe that they can be applied generally to other coalfields.

INTRODUCTION Financing, or providing adequate capital at low cost for developing and bringing a natural resource property into production, is a fundamental requirement for profitable operation. Under the present economic environment the cost of financing any project is gaining more importance than ever. The fundamental keys for success in mining are "the Four M's": Mineral, Market, Management and Money. In recent years, with capital and operating costs skyrocketing, increased emphasis on obtaining adequate and low cost capital funds for bringing in a prospect is essential. For a small mining company there are limited sources for raising funds. In most cases these companies have neither a substantial asset base, nor any cash flow, and they are deemed as risky investments. The issue of shares of capital stock of such a company is probably the most common method of raising funds via the public purse. Alternatively, debt could be used and a source of such capital might be private investors or financial institutions. The company which intends to raise funds from the investing public by way of the sale of equity, subsequently lists those shares for trading on a stock exchange. Going and staying public commits a company to a multitude of complex laws, rules and reporting requirements. The governing bodies are the watch dogs for the public. The largest of such an organization of this kind in the world is the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in the United States. In Canada, the Securities Laws come from within provincial jurisdiction. Most provinces have their own Securities Act, and Securities Commission. It is the Commission which administers the Act, and hence controls the distribution and trading of securities within the province. Extra provincial registration is required for trading and distribution in more than one province. In British Columbia, prior to a public offering, the approval of the Superintendent of Brokers (SOB) and of the VSE must be obtained. THE VANCOUVER AND TORONTO STOCK EXCHANGES There are five stock exchanges in Canada which supply a trading forum in which mining companies may operate. The stock exchanges are located in Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, Calgary, and Vancouver. Of the five stock exchanges, the Vancouver Stock Exchange (VSE) and the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSE) are the most heavily used for resource-based issues and are the focus of this paper. The objective of this section is to provide a brief background on the VSE and TSE. The Vancouver Stock Exchange The VSE is Canada's predominant stock exchange for financing resource-based, junior issues. Since 1907, the VSE has acted as a source of funds for mining, exploration and energy companies throughout Canada and the world. Currently, there are over 1400 companies listed on the VSE. During 1983, over 3.1 billion shares traded at a value exceeding CDN$3.96 million. The VSE has developed a reputation as one of the few exchanges where a speculative resource venture may obtain a listing and subsequent financing in a relatively short time, generally five to ten months. The SOB, the Investment Dealer's Association of Canada (IDA), and the VSE all regulate trading at the Exchange. Any irregularities in a company's stock dealings are investigated and trading may be halted by the VSE until a satisfactory explanation has been received from the suspended company. Companies can be suspended from trading or delisted for various reasons. One reason is misrepresentation of facts in documentation submitted to the SOB, VSE, or to the public, through news releases.

Although previous studies l,2,3 have been made, no correlations for pressure drop have been proposed. This is probably because severe particle breakage occurred and pressure drops changed substantially with time. A quantitative statement of the relationship of pressure drop to the parameters of the system is desirable for lignite since, unlike higher rank coals, lignite slurries are thixotropic. The present investigation was undertaken to quantify the pipeline behavior and required continuous monitoring of pressure drop and size distribution.

Petrographic studies of over 1400 rock and mineral samples, and studies of their field relations, show that there is a complete gradation between sandstone and limestone; the lime-silicate rocks were produced by recrystallization of limestone; mineralization and silicification occurred after silication and at considerably lower temperature; carbonation occurred at still lower temperatures. IN CONNECTION with law suits between mining companies at Bingham, Utah, a few years ago, the writer made petrographic studies of more than 1400 rock and mineral samples in thin sections, and also careful studies of their field relations. In petrographic studies, even when an area is studied intensively, attention is commonly centered very largely on the unusual features of special interest, so that the relative abundance of rock types (or minerals or textures) can only be determined by a study of map areas outlined largely by field methods, and cannot be based directly on microscopic work. It is very uncommon, and usually impossible, to take samples at regular short intervals along and across formations. It is precisely because such methods were used at Bingham that the work presents a rare opportunity for determining, on a microscopic basis, the relative abundance of rock types and the continuity of gradations between rock types. At the same time, a study was made of the alteration of sediments under the influence of igneous intrusions, with results that are believed to be of interest and importance.

In recent years an important function of the mining engineer has been the appraisal of the value of mining-properties required by those planning consolidations of a number of' individual operations. In no field of productive industry have the economic results attainable by consolidation been more clearly shown than in the mining-regions of the United States. In many important mining-centers unification of ownership of the most valuable properties has already partially or completely been attained, and, in other districts, projected absorptions and consolidations await only favorable financial conditions for their consummation. The iron-ore districts of the Lake Superior region, the coal-mines of Colorado, of Wyoming and of Utah, the anthracite mines of Pennsylvania, the Connellsville coking-coal mines, and large areas of bituminous coal-land in Pennsylvania, in Ohio, in the Indian Territory and in other portions of the United States, are now largely controlled by a few corporations operating on a large scale, or by a number of corporations working in harmony because of an affiliation and interleaving of interests. The tact of keen financiers and the diplomacy of men of great administrative ability are the chief operative forces in conceiving and accomplishing such consolidations, but in formulating and maturing them, the services of the mining engineer are often required to supply the facts upon which they must be based. For this purpose the expert is expected to furnish full and complete reports covering the quantity of ore, coal or other mineral available, its value per ton, cost of mining and treatment, etc. In reporting upon gold-, silver-, lead-, zinc-, copper- or iron-

THE composition of steel and the theory of its heat treatment have been so ably discussed elsewhere that it is unnecessary to go into the subject here. The purpose of this paper is to describe briefly the method of treating drill steel at the Copper Range mines, giving some of the troubles encountered and the manner in which they were overcome or corrected. To study the matter properly, it was necessary to devise a system of records that would show the actual underground performance of the drills. To illustrate this system, the records of the Champion mine are used, as it is at this mine that most of the work along these lines has been done. Reports from each drill machine are made daily by the shop and mine, and tables compiled from these reports show the footage drilled, steel broken, drills received and sent out at the shop, drills sharpened, and bits cut off. These data show what each machine or party is doing and whether the miners' supply of drills is kept up to date. There have been times when the supply of drills has been short and time lost by the miner in looking for drills. The daily records show the number and condition of drills on hand at all times. Under the old method of sharpening, the drills were heated in a coke furnace, the proper degree of heat being judged by color. Then they were sharpened in a word drill-sharpening machine, reheated in a second coke furnace where the proper heat was again determined by color, and quenched in water. While this method was fairly successful in the hands of a careful workman and for the solid steel used in the old piston drill machine, the introduction of the faster water machine, using hollow steel, produced changes both underground and in the shop. Much more was expected of the hollow-steel and' hammer-type machine, with its improved method of rotation, but troubles due to breakage, burnt bits, uneven tempering, etc., at once began to appear.

Systematic sampling and analysis in coal-washing plants results in product control and economical operation. A well-organized laboratory system reduces operating costs and increases sales if the operating and sales companies make full use of information it supplies. The operating cost of a control laboratory is less than 1 pct per ton of coal produced. THE system of laboratory control as practiced by the Ayrshire group of mines was begun with the construction and organization of the first laboratory in conjunction with the completion of its first wash-ery in 1941. The primary purpose of this laboratory was to maintain a check on the quality of the coal produced from the washing plant. The laboratory was equipped to determine proximate analyses, float-and-sink tests, and screen analyses, and was staffed by a chemist. an assistant. and a technician. Soon it became apparent (1) that product control could be accomplished, (2) that a substantial reduction in operating costs could be effected by close control of coal losses in the rejects, and (3) that information furnished by the laboratory was of continuous value to the operating and sales companies. Consequently the laboratory function was expanded to supply them with additional data as required. As the parent company expanded and new mines were added, control laboratories were established at each mine equipped with washeries, and a central laboratory was maintained at one of the mines that was located equally convenient to all of them. A well-planned control laboratory assures production of a uniform, high-quality product. Whenever coal of substandard grade is loaded inadvertently, the sales company can be informed and the proper channel of distribution made. Conversely only constant and strict laboratory supervision can insure proper production of the various grades. Knowing the product, the producer can keep out of many customers' arguments that may be both awkward and expensive. Double checking between customers and mine laboratories have solved many disputes' Some nager insist On buying coal On the analysis basis only, with penalties for substandard coal and premiums for coal above normal quality. A substantial percentage of the coal sold by the Ayrshire group is of this nature. The usual procedure is for the customer to sample and analyze the coal as it is unloaded at the plant, and the mine laboratory samples it as it is loaded at the mine for subsequent analysis by the central laboratory. Only the unloaded moisture is considered, rather than the average of mine and plant moisture, and the buyer sends duplicate samples to the central mine laboratory for this determination. The average of the two analyses determines the price of coal at the mine. In this particular case, the laboratory plays an important part in increasing realization for two reasons: (1) every attempt is made to maintain plant efficiency and product quality as high as possible, (2) check on analyses and sampling by the buyer or seller.

The Connellsville coal-field is a separate strip of the upper coal measures, flanking the Chestnut Ridge along its western side. It extends from a point a few miles south of Uniontown, in Fayette County, following a northeasterly course parallel to the trend of Chestnut Ridge, through Fayette and Westmoreland counties, with its terminal prongs resting 011 the southern portion of Indiana County, north of the town of Blairsville. This belt of coking coal will average about three miles in width and over sixty miles in length, affording nearly, if not quite, two hundred square miles of this large coal-bed.

I. INTRODUCTION. In the summer of 1909 the Boston & Montana reduction department of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. completed a new flue system, at a cost of about $1,100,000, and -is this includes the largest and highest chimney in the world, and some new features of flue construction, a description will be of interest. At the Spokane meeting of the Institute in September, 1909, a brief mention was made of this flue system, in discussing Mr. Brunton's presidential paper on the Progress of Metallurgy in the West, and a promise was given that when a long enough time had elapsed, so that operating results could be given, a paper would be offered. The smelting plant includes blast furnaces, MacDougall roasters, gas-fired reverberatories, and converters.

Bedded potash deposits are known only from Phanerozoic evaporite sequences. They are composed of either sylvite or carnallite, of which only the former produces commercial potash ores. Both Permian and Neogene potash deposits have experienced sulfatization by percolating oxygenated surface brines, causing enrichment in the potash content. Permian potash deposits are mined in various parts of Europe and North America, Miocene ones only along the outer rim of the Carpathian Mountains and in Sicily. New discoveries of large Miocene rock salt bodies make it possible to predict the occurrence of potash deposits along their flanks.

This is the fourth and final installment of Leo Reinartz' summation of the steelmaking industry over the first one hundred years. ALTHOUGH basic open-hearth steel has been in the limelight for many years, it has had to share some of its glory with two lesser but nevertheless important rivals, one 50 years old and one a rejuvenated process. Electric steel Electric-steel manufacture began in a humble way in the United States in 1906, when the first heat was tapped from a 3-ton Heroult electric furnace at the Halcomb Steel Co., Syracuse, N. Y. During the intervening years, it has completely eliminated the crucible process. For many years electric melting furnaces were located predominantly in relatively small, nonintegrated plants, making all kinds of high-grade alloy steels. Most of these furnaces, with capacities ranging from 5 to 20 tons, had basic bottoms. During and after World War II, many large basic electric furnaces, some up to 200 tons in capacity, were installed in integrated plants to make commodity steels. There were several reasons for building electric furnaces. Capital investment per annual ton of capacity was low and furnaces could be installed quickly. Since these furnaces used mostly scrap iron in the charge, no extra expensive coke- and blast-furnace capacity had to be added. The perfection of the top-charging design, and the development of large transformers and furnaces, made possible tons per hour as high as from modern 350-ton. open-hearth furnaces. Electric furnaces have high availability and repair costs are low. The process is flexible. Alloy and plain carbon steels of high quality can be made. In the past, the main emphasis in attacking the problem of the recovery of oil has been on the determination of fluid flow characteristics and residual oil saturation in the part of the reservoir which is contacted by a displacing phase. It is recognized that the determination of the fraction of the reservoir contacted in secondary recovery operations is also of great importance in predicting the ultimate recovery to be expected. A method is described in which radiographic techniques are used to determine these areal sweepout factors for any type of well spacing. Data showing the relationship of viscosity ratio and relative permeability to areal sweepout efficiency are presented for the five spot and the direct line drive well spacing patterns. Further applications of the method to studies of the displacement efficiency in the area contacted are mentioned. INTRODUCTION The problem of increasing oil recovery from typical reservoirs is generally attacked by trying to devise some means for reducing the residual oil in that part of the reservoir which is contacted. The fraction of the reservoir contacted in the displacement process. however, is also of major importance but has been given less consideration in the past. one reason for this neglect is the meager information available on the portion of the reservoir contacted and the magnitude of changes in this factor as operating conditions are varied. Until recently, the only means available for determining this quantity has involved the use of the electrolytic or poten-tiometric modelsl in which one is limited to working with a mobility ratio of unity. while means for calculating the volume of a reservoir contacted do exist. the calculations are very tedious for systems with mobility ratio different from unity. Recently several such determinations have been reported,213 and an experimental method involving a step-wise use of potentiometric models has been described.' A new method which has been developed for studying the areal distribution of phases in a porous medium is discussed below. This tool can be' used to determine the effect of operating variables such as viscosity, relative permeability, presence of gas, mobility ratio, rate and stratification on the fraction of the reservoir contacted by the displacing medium. This development based on the use of X-rays gives a pictorial representation of the location of the phases. Further, the amount of each phase at each point of interest can be determined quantitatively. X-RAY METHOD FOR AREAL STUDIES In this method the location of various phases distributed Over a test area are observed simultaneously by obtaining a photographic record of the transmission of X-rays through the test plate. This procedure is an adaptation of the radiographic techniques which have 10% been used in the medical and industrial fields. Just as the medical profession uses a chest plate to show spatial interrelationships, the location of an X-ray absorbing fluid and a nonabsorbing fluid in a porous medium can be determined by obtaining a photographic record of transmitted X-rays. Moreover, as changes occur in such a System, these changes can be observed by taking successive photographs. Previously, X-ray methods have been used in fluid flow studies to determine quantitatively the saturation at a given point in the system. The intensity of the transmitted X-rays was measured by an ionization chamber, so that a point by point survey of saturation could be made.
