A cyclic method for processing manganese ores using sodium sulphate as the basic reagent is described. Sodium sulphate is electrolyzed in a diaphragm cell to give an anolyte-containing agentisdescribed.Sodiumsulphuric acid and a catholyte-containing iselectrolyzedincaustic soda, a part of which is carbonated in a cyclic manner to form soda ash. The reduced ore is leached with the anolyte to dissolve the manganese and the impurities are precipitated by addition of catholyte. Manganese in the pregnant todissolvethemanganeseandtheimpuritiessolution is precipitated as synthetic rhodochrosite with a carbonated catholyte, and sodium sulphate is regenerated. Calcining the manganese carbonate gives a high grade product and the carbon dioxide is returned to the carbonation step. The results of laboratory tests using cells equipped with synthetic-fiber diaphragms and permselective membranes, which permit transfer of anions or cations during electrolysis, are described. A METHOD which has been considered for pro-cessing manganese ores under emergency conditions to recover a product suitable for smelting to ferromanganese involves reductive roasting of the ore for leaching with dilute sulphuric acid followed by precipitation of the manganese from the purified pregnant solution with sodium carbonate. Although the process is operable and involves no novel or untried steps, it is noncyclic in regard to reagents. Research seemed warranted to determine if a cyclic process could be developed by electrolyzing the sodium sulphate formed during precipitation of the manganese with soda ash to regenerate sulphuric acid and sodium hydroxide. Reduced ore would be leached with acid anolyte to dissolve the manganese. The iron, alumina, and other dissolved impurities would be precipitated with the caustic catholyte, and the manganese in the purified pregnant solution would be precipitated as artificial rhodochrosite with carbonated catholyte to regenerate simultaneously sodium sulphate for electrolysis. Waste boiler gas and CO, from calcining the manganese precipitate would be recycled for carbonation of the caustic catholyte. There is a surprising lack of data in the technical literature on diaphragm electrolysis of sodium sulphate. One of the more comprehensive papers, by Atwell and Fuwa, describes the problem involved in electrolyzing byproduct sodium sulphate from the viscose process with particular regard to the design and operation of asbestos diaphragm cells. Frisk' also investigated electrolysis of sodium sulphate from viscose-spinning baths to recover caustic soda and sulphuric acid. The objective in these investigations was to produce, by electrolysis and evaporation, a concentrated caustic-soda solution and a sulphuric-acid solution low in sodium sulphate. Because of these requirements, the process was not too attractive despite a favorable yield of caustic and acid with a reasonable power consumption. Because strong acid and base are not required for processing manganese ores and nonelectrolyzed sodium sulphate is not objectionable in either reagent, the present problem was somewhat simpler than that of these investigators. The purpose of this report is to summarize briefly the results of laboratory electrolysis of commercial sodium sulphate in diaphragm cells of different types and the application of the acid and caustic for processing manganese ores in a cyclic manner. Electrolysis in Permeable Diaphragm Cells The principal problem in electrolyzing sodium sulphate in a permeable diaphragm cell is to prevent mixing of the acid and base formed in the anode and cathode compartments. It is not enough to separate the anolyte and catholyte by a single diaphragm. A three-compartment cell in which the sodium-sulphate solution is fed to the center compartment and flows through the permeable diaphragms to the anode and cathode compartments is more efficient electrically. Diaphragms should be porous enough to allow flow of solution to outer compartments but tight enough to prevent gross mixing of the anolyte and catholyte. In addition to being resistant to acid and alkali, the diaphragms should offer minimum resistance to the flow of current. It is also important that the electrolyte contain a high concentration of sodium sulphate to furnish an abundance of sodium and sulphate ions and thereby decrease the current carried by hydrogen and hydroxyl ions. A practical limitation of sodium-sulphate concentration is imposed by the decreased solubility of sodium sulphate with decreasing temperature. At 20°C, a concentration of 200 g per liter sodium sulphate can be maintained. Little is gained in conductivity by using a concentration greater than 200 g per liter. When silver chloride deforms by pencil glide at temperatures of 26ºand 72°C, grain size has no effect upon the proportional limit and the material necks down to a knife edge under tension. At -196ºC, deformation takes place on fewer slip systems to produce straight slip traces, the flow stress becomes sensitive to grain size and fracture occurs by cleavage from an intergranular source without any reduction in area. THERE are significant differences between the appearance of the slip bands formed in silver chloride and in the alkali halides at room temperature. The bands in sodium chloride, e.g., are fine and geometrically straight, whereas in silver chloride they are coarse and wavy.' Such differences in the slip behavior prompted us to inquire what the effects of grain boundaries might be on the mechanical properties of these solids. As an introduction to a general study of ionic poly-crystal behavior, we have investigated the effect of grain size on the stress-strain relationships in silver chloride at different temperatures. We have chosen silver chloride chiefly because polycrystals can be easily prepared free from cracks and macroscopic voids by conventional techniques. Moreover, as we shall see, the slip behavior can be readily modified by changing the temperature. It will be shown that the effect of grain size on the yield stress of silver chloride is strikingly dependent upon the temperature of deformation and that this temperature effect comes about through a change in the number of slip systems which operate at the onset of plastic flow. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Polycrystalline tensile specimens were made by recrystallizing cold-rolled AgCl sheet. Thirty-gram quantities of AR grade silver chloride powder were melted in a low heat capacity furnace, cast into cylindrical forms 3/4 in. in dim and approximately 1 in. in length and then extruded with a 16:l reduction ratio into rods 3/16 in. in dim. Extrusion temperatures were varied from room temperature to 350°C. In order to impart various degrees of cold'work to the extruded rod. All extrusions were then cross rolled to sheet 0.040 in. in thickness at room temperature and machined to form tensile specimens having a gage length of 0.750 in. with a width of either 0.250 or 0.145 in.* Annealing was carried out in an air oven at 200°C for periods up to 20 hr. specimens having average grain diameters ranging from 0.024 to 0.40 mm were prepared by varying the extrusion temperature and annealing time in the conventional manner. To obtain specimens with grain sizes larger than 0.40mm, lightly deformed thin prisims of silver chloride single crystals (supplied by Harshaw Chemical Co.) were recrystallized. Grain size determinations were made by an intercept method and revealed that the grains were equi-axed. Laue back-reflection X-ray patterns showed little tendency to form a preferred orientation texture. Specimens which were to be used for the slip band studies were polished by immersion in fresh boiling concentrated NH,OH for 60 sec. They were then etch polished for 10 sec on each side by hand lapping on a stationary velveteen lap wetted with a dilute Hypo solution (5 g of Kodak Acid Fixer in 100 cc H20). Finally the specimens were rinsed in warm water and alcohol, blown dry and carefully mounted in the tensile machine for testing. Tensile tests were performed at three temperatures, namely, 26º, -72º, and -196°C. A screw-driven hard tensile machine was used at a constant strain rate of 0.006 in. per in. per min. Loads were determined with a light- proof ring fitted with A-18 strain gages and extensions were measured with a 0.0001 in. dial gage. Constant level baths of alcohol with dry ice and liquid nitrogen were used to maintain the two lower test temperatures. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Reproducibility—In view of the light sensitivity and reactive nature of silver chloride, it was necessary to determine whether reproducibility depended upon either exposure to light or to the condition of the surface. Numerous investigators have studied the various factors that influence the ultimate strength of model mine pillars, such as ratio of height-to-least width; restraint or friction on the top and bottom; 1,2 the effect of stress distribution in pillars on their strength;3 and the scaling factors involved in applying the results of model pillars to full-scale pillars. However, the load-bearing capacity of pillars after initial failure does not appear to have been investigated. Yet many mines employ methods in which small pillars or pillar remnants are left systematically; these pillars crush as mining progresses and, of necessity, affect the behavior of surrounding rock even after initial failure. The effect of such crushed or crushing pillars depends largely on their load-deformation characteristics. This chapter presents the results of a preliminary investigation to determine the load-deformation characteristics of a few model mine pillars to and beyond initial failure. Various investigators have also studied the elastic and viscoelastic behavior of mine structures. In such studies, computers are frequently employed to obtain numerical results by the finite difference or finite element methods. It would be entirely feasible to write a program that would approximate the load-deformation characteristics of pillars to and beyond the crushing stage if these characteristics were known. More accurate information on the induced stresses and deformations in overlying strata and on surface subsidence could be obtained, information which should result in better strata control by enabling the engineer to calculate more accurately the effects of changes in pillar spacing, size, and shape.

Permissible Limits: The question of permissible dust limits has been considered by medical commit-ties and various national conferences. A statement included in reports of some of these committees is as follows: Concentrations to which the dust must be induced in order to be safe have not been absolutely determined. There is evidence that a concentration of more than five million particles per cubic foot of a highly siliceous dust is dangerous. Therefore, it may be stated that it is desirable to avoid counts of more than five million particles of dust containing free silica to a high percent in working places. TROUGH washers were among the earliest methods used for concentrating ores; they are referred to by Agricola about the middle of the sixteenth century as already being used while the hand- operated jigging sieve had only recently come into use. For cleaning coal the trough washer apparently was first used in France and Belgium .about 1841. The early trough washers were intermittent and the refuse at least was shoveled out by hand. The invention of a continuous jig washer, by a Frenchman, Berard, in 1848, acted as a stimulus to coal washings in jigs and retarded progress in trough washing' in the nineteenth century. Chapman and Mott describe a number of trough washers developed in England and on the Continent from 1850 to 1900, such as the Bell and Ramsay, Ramsay, Bell and Green, Wunderlich, Scaife, McLellan; Lodge, Elliott, Blackett, and Murton. , The later of these removed the refuse mechanically, either intermittently or continuously, but in ways that interfered with stratification. THE RHEOLAVEUR A Belgian engineer, Antoine France, is responsible for the development of means to remove refuse materials continuously from a trough washer while preserving stratification and preventing the loss of coal with the refuse. The methods and equipment devised, which have become known throughout the world as Rheolaveur, were initiated at the St. Nicholas mine near Liége, Belgium, about 1912. This installation consisted of two units to wash 20 to 8-mm. (13/15 to 5/16 in.) and 8-mm. to 0 (5/16-in. to 0), each having only two superimposed inclined troughs. The first few "Rheo" boxes on the top trough removed refuse directly and the remaining Rheo boxes discharged impure refuse to the lower trough for rewashing. In another paper I have described in general the close association of zinc-blende and iron pyrites in the ore-deposits of southwest Wis consin. These two minerals generally occur together at the same horizon, a sheet of one being overlain by a sheet of the other; and also the pyrites is disseminated through the blende to such a degree that the latter is rendered comparatively worthless for the produc tion of spelter. Ordinarily the pyrites, which is mostly the trimetric marcasite variety, occurs in about equal quantity with the blende and is separated by hand-culliug and chipping; but there are large de posits where the ores are so closely mixed that they can neither be separated by culling nor by any mechanical method. The specific gravity of the two minerals is so nearly the same that attempts often made to effect even a partial separation by jigging have proved un. successful. The smelters of zinc-ores in the Mississippi valley will not take ores which carry more than 7 per cent. of iron; and it is therefore necessary to cull the massive ('jack" with great care and at consid erable expense, in order to bring it up to the market-standard of purity. The results of trials to effect a separation of blende and pyrites in other regions have been equally unsatisfactory. The literature of this branch of metallurgy abounds in examples. In Wisconsin efforts have been made in the past to " burn " the mixed ores in heaps, in order to soften or destroy the pyrites, and facilitate its separation from the massive blende. The same method has also been resorted to when galenite is mixed through the substance of the blende, for the purpose of disintegrating the ore, so that it could be separated by jigging. The custom was to pile the ore and the fuel together. As might have been expected, the results were far from satisfactory. INTRODUCTION Tailings produced by many uranium milling operations consist of fine sands with some silt and slimes. When fine sandy materials are placed by hydraulic methods behind an impermeable dam, they are deposited in a loose state and some portion remains saturated. These saturated, loose fine sands are highly susceptible to liquefaction, the phenomenon in which a monotonic or cyclic disturbance causes excess pore water pressure and, concurrently, a total loss of strength in the sand. Once liquefied, the fine sand flows, causing collapse of supported structures. The potential for such a liquefaction failure was identified and successfully treated at Sohio Western Mining Company's L-Bar Uranium Operations near Seboyeta, New Mexico. The Sohio tailings dam is an earthfill starter dam with tailings raises constructed upstream of the starter dam crest. Beginning with the start of mill operations in 1976, tailings were deposited hydraulically in the impoundment behind the starter dam. As the tailings level approached the crest of the starter dam, beached tailings were excavated and placed in lifts by a dozer to form two raises above the crest of the starter dam. As the impoundment has gradually filled with tailings, the decant water pond level has risen. Correspondingly, the water level in the tailings dam, upstream of the chimney drain, has also risen. By August 1980, the phreatic surface was above the crest of the starter dam and stability analyses indicated that the tailings dam did not have the safety factor of 1.0, under static loading with liquefaction, implicit in the 1980 New Mexico State Engineer's requirements. The problem related directly to the high phreatic surface in the loose sandy tailings behind a dam structure that was not capable of resisting failure which might develop in liquefied tailings. Two methods of stability enhancement were considered for the Sohio dam. One method was reinforcement of the dam using a clay buttress placed against the downstream slope. The other method was installation of horizontal drains through the starter dam to drain decant water and lower the phreatic surface. Either method would increase the stability of the dam. However, the comparative analysis of the methods indicated that horizontal drainage offered significant advantages in cost and could provide a more direct remedy of the source of the problem, the saturated section of tailings. In addition, a drainage system would be more amenable to modification and more quickly installed than a buttress. On the other hand, a clay buttress could be more directly controlled, would involve routine earthwork, and has successful precedent. Therefore, the buttress approach would involve less risk. After weighing the advantages of both methods and the costs versus risks, the horizontal drainage approach was selected. Consequently, a horizontal pipe drain system was recommended and designed (D’Appolonia, 1981a). This paper describes the design and installation of the drainage system and its initial performance. PIPE DRAIN SYSTEM DESIGN Design Criteria and Parameters To increase the stability of the dam to acceptable levels, the drainage system had to lower the phreatic surface behind the dam to the level calculated to give a minimum safety factor of 1.0 under conditions of liquefaction. In addition, the system needed to be essentially self-operating, easy to maintain, and economical. To accomplish these objectives, the following design criteria were established: 1. The pipe drains must lower the phreatic surface at least 4.3 m (14 ft.) at the midpoint along the dam (the deepest section) and by proportionately smaller amounts toward the abutments to satisfy safety factor requirements.

Concentrating mixed sulfide-oxide copper ores by the leach-precipitation-flotation method is an old operation at the Miami Copper Co. The idea was conceived and the method developed at Miami by F. W. Maclennan and Harmon Keyes during the years 1929 to 1934, and it was these men who gave the term LPF to this process. Miami at that time had considerable reserves of mixed sulfide-oxide ore.* In the development of a suitable treatment method, it was natural that leaching of the oxides with acid and the precipita¬tion of copper from the resulting copper sulfate solution by iron was investigated. The high- and low-cycle fatigue properties of the nickel-base superalloy, Mar-MBOO, in columnar-grained and single-crystal forms were determined at room temperature. It was found that the fatigue lives of these materials were greatly affected by the size of preexisting cracks in MC-type carbides contained in the micro structure. Most of the data falls on two curves given by: (zN)'/A€= K, where Nf is the number of cycles to failure, Af is the total strain range, and K is a function of carbide size. No difference was observed in the fatigue behavior of the columnar-grained and single-crystal materials for the same MC carbide size. Matrix slip and crack initiation occurred at precracked MC carbides and, to a lesser extent, at micropores. Fatigue crack propagation was mainly in the Stage I mode, i.e., on cry stallo graPhic slip planes. The Stage I fracture in these materials was unusual in that distinct features were observed on the fracture surfaces. In high-cycle fatigue, these features resembled those commonly observed on the cleavage fracture surfaces of bcc and hcp materials. Yet, in this study, the cracks propagated slowly in a cyclic manner. In low-cycle fatigue, the Stage I facets contained equiaxed dimples, similar to those observed on the tensile fracture surfaces of ductile materials. These observations indicate that both local normal and shear stresses are involved in these Stage I fractures. A model is proposed to explain these results based on the weakening of the cohesive energy of the active slip planes by reversed shear deformation and the fracture of the bonds across the weakened planes by the local normal stress. RECENT developments in casting technology have produced cast nickel-base superalloys in columnar -grained and single-crystal forms.1'2 The tensile and creep properties of the nickel-base superalloy, Mar-M200, cast in these forms have been shown to be superior to the corresponding properties of the conventionally cast polycrystalline material.lp2 This improvement in properties results, in part, from the elimination of grain boundaries in the single crystals and the alignment of the grain boundaries parallel to the stress axis in the columnar-grained castings. As part of a program to evaluate the fatigue properties of nickel-base superalloys cast in single-crystal and columnar-grained forms, a study has been made of the cyclic deformation and fracture of Mar-M2OO at room temperature. M. fiFl I .hininr Mpmher AIMF ic ^pninr Rocoarrh Accn^iata anH I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The composition range of Mar-Ma00 in weight percent is: 8 to 10 Cr, 9 to 11 Co, 11.5 to 13.5 W, 0.75 to 1.25 Cb, 1.75 to 2.25 Ti, 4.75 to 5.25 Al, 0.01 to 0.02 B, 0.03 to 0.08 Zr, 0.07 to 0.12 C, bal. Ni. All of the castings met the above specifications. The castings were solutionized for 1 to 4 hr at 2250°F followed by aging at 1600°F for 32 hr which resulted in a 0.2 pct offset yield stress of 150,000 psi at room temperature. The microstructure of the material consisted of cuboidal, coherent particles of ordered, fcc Ni3(A1,Ti) (commonly designated y'), approximately 0.3 p on edge, distributed in an fcc y solid-solution matrix. MC carbides together with shrinkage and gas micropores were also distributed throughout the materials. The MC carbides and micropores were located preferentially in the interdendritic interstices, as well as in the grain boundaries in the columnar-grained castings. The (100) direction of all the single crystals and the common (100) axis of the grains in the columnar materials were aligned within about 5 deg of the specimen axis. Fatigue testing was carried out in the high-cycle (HCF) and low-cycle (LCF) fatigue regions, with the major difference being gross yielding of the specimen occurred during the first cycle in the LCF region. This division also corresponded with the more usual one in which the life of a specimen in LCF is less than lo4 cycles and that in HCF is greater than lo4 cycles. The designs of the high-cycle fatigue and low-cycle fatigue specimens are shown in Figs. l(a) and (c), respectively. The gage sections of both HCF and LCF specimens were electropolished prior to testing. The HCF specimens were tested in an MTS, closed-loop, hydraulic fatigue machine at 10 cps in air. The specimens were cycled between a tensile stress of 5000 psi and a maximum tensile stress which ranged from 35,000 to 125,000 psi, Fig. l(b). The LCF specimens were cycled under strain control from zero to a maximum tensile strain, Fig. l(d), in a Wiedemann-Baldwin testing machine. The experimental procedure has been described elsewhere.3'4 Both HCF and LCF tests were interrupted periodically in order to replicate the development of slip and cracking at the specimen surface. This was accomplished by placing plastic replicating tape around the gage section of the specimen while the specimen was in the mahine. The size of the MC carbides for all specimens was measured on a polished longitudinal section through the gage section after fatigue testing. The method of measurement consisted of carefully scanning the entire polished section in order to locate the largest MC carbides. This paper summarizes the results of an investigation sponsored by The Coates Steel Products Company. The objective was to determine the relative effects of certain chemical and physical properties on the wear resistance of grinding balls when grinding cement. In making this study, a number of types of balls were used in both dry and wet grinding in commercial ball mills. The radioactive-tracer technique was used in separating the test balls from the rest of the mill charge and in sorting the different types of halls that were all tested at the same time for each of the grinding operations. PROCESSING OF GRINDING BALLS In order to determine whether the properties of grinding balls, namely, composition, microstructure and hardness, can be related to the rate of wear, the halls used in this study were selected to represent various combinations of these properties. It was recognized that the mechanism of wear was not the same in the wet mill as in the dry mill. Therefore, the types of balls tested in each of the two environments were not necessarily the same. However, all of the types of balls evaluated in the dry mill were tested simultaneously for one time period, while those evaluated in the wet mill were tested simultaneously for three different time periods. All of the test balls were separated from the charge when the mill was dumped. All of the balls were of 0.940-inch diameter when charged, and all but the regular production balls were finish ground to this size to eliminate the decarburized surface layers. The steels and processing methods used, as well as the micro-structures and hardness levels of the balls, are described as follows: Regular production forged SAE 1095 steel balls were used in both the wet and dry mills. They were forged to a nominal diameter of 0.940 inch and quenched in oil from the forging temperature. Each retained a partially decarburized surface layer from the forging bar stock; the maximum depth of this layer was about 0.030 inch and the decarburization was negligible where the ball was sheared from the bar. The hardness at the surface was 40 to 46 Rock-well C in the partially decarburized area and 57 to 62 Rockwell C in the areas not decarburized. The hardened zone extended to a depth of about one-third of the radius. Below the decarburized layer, the hardened zone consisted primarily of hard as-quenched martensite with varying amounts of retained austenite. This structure changed to fine pearlite at a depth of about one-third of the radius. In order to eliminate the effect of the decarburized layer, a set of production balls of SAE 1095 steel was forged to about a 1-inch diameter, quenched in oil from the forging temperature, and ground on ball-bearing grinding equipment to a 0.940-inch diameter to remove the decarburized layer. The balls' hardened zones were similar to those in the previous set. The hardness of the finished surfaces was 52 to 60 Rockwell C. A slight amount of decarburization apparently remained after the removal of about 0.030 inch from the surface. Balls of this type were tested in the dry mill only. Throughout 1928, production of oil from Venezuela steadily increased, and at the close of the year, the output was at the rate of nearly 400,000 bbl. a day. The total for the year was approximately 106,500,000 bbl., representing an increase of about 66 per cent. over the 63,000,000 bbl. produced in 1927. Venezuela now stands next to the United States as the second largest oil-producing country in the world; and there is abundant evidence to suggest that this relationship will endure for a number of years. Reserves were notably increased in the Lake shore fields, and the potential output of the Maracaibo Basin is much greater than the current production. In spite of this, the percentage of production increase was comparatively moderate, and the rate of this increase continued to fall off slightly, as has been the case for the last three years. This does not suggest that further annual increases in Venezuelan output will not materialize; only that the rate of these increases appears to be on the decline, and that with every succeeding year the future tendency will be in the direction of a stabilized level of output. The following table shows the production trend of the country since 1925: 1925 increase over 1924, 132 per cent. 1926 increase over 1925, 80 per cent. 1927 increase over 1926, 75 per cent. 1928 increase over 1927, 66 per cent. Many factors will work to prevent a reversal of this trend, but the principal ones are strong ownership in large-acreage units, and the probable indisposition of the world market to absorb a more rapidly increasing Venezuelan output at prices profitable to the producers. The distress oil element is not a factor in Venezuela; also, any unforeseen jump, such as results in the United States from the discovery of a Seminole or a deep sand at Long Beach, or Santa Fe Springs, is impossible in Venezuela, on account of lack of means for transporting a sudden surplus of oil, and the slowness with which additional transportation equipment in the form of shallow-draft tankers can be obtained.

ALTHOUGH the first colonists in the area that is now the United States, whether Spanish, French or English in nationality, were usually keenly interested in the possibilities of mineral wealth, it is a curious and interesting fact that none of them happened upon the mineral deposits that eventually were to make this the greatest mineral-producing country; up to 1800 it would probably have been rated as rather poor in minerals. Spanish explorers traversed the southeastern United States with- out finding the Appalachian gold deposits that aroused so much interest in the early nineteenth century; Coronado sought in vain for the seven golden cities of Cibola; and the important gold deposits of California were not discovered until the political sovereignty of the region had passed from Mexico, which had held it for three centuries. The French also held Canada for nearly two centuries (and the British for another century) without finding the mineral deposits in Ontario and Quebec that now are so important. Though they knew of the copper of the Keweenaw peninsula, the lead ores of Wisconsin and Missouri, and the coal of Illinois in the seventeenth century, these deposits were all too remote for exploitation. In the area held by Great Britain, iron smelting was planned at Jamestown as early as 1619 and was actually begun at Lynn, Mass., in 1643. The industry grew slowly, at first, but had reached considerable importance before the Revolution. Commercial bituminous coal mining began about 1750 in Virginia but anthracite mining in Pennsylvania was not started until 1800. As a result there was naturally little interest in the technical aspects of mineral production here before 1800 by any except the few people who were actually engaged in it. The recently completed liquid sulfur dioxide plant at American Smelting and Refining Co.'s Tacoma copper smelter in Washington last April is one step by the firm to meet ambient air quality standards in the vicinities of its three US copper smelters. At a capital cost of $18.5 million, the liquid SO2 plant will work together with an existing sulfuric acid plant to treat all gases generated by the copper converters. Designed to handle up to 45,000 cfm of converter gas utilizing the Dimethylaniline (DMA) process, this plant is expected to recover about 51% of the total smelter input.

Much has been done of late years to facilitate preliminary stratigraphical investigations, and for examination at considerable depths and in a certain character of material the diamonddrill, in its general forms, certainly stands pre-eminent among the tools for such work. But there are large classes of deposits —indeed, I may say the larger proportion in which ordinary. prospecting is done—which lie near the surface and are interbedded with soft and fine material. The method usually employed for prospecting these is by means of small shafts. These are sunk with considerable slowness and at considerable expense, depending largely upon the character of the material encountered, and are greatly interfered with by water. In this region the smallest are 3 by 4 feet, but they are usually considerably larger. Having had occasion during the past year to do a large amount of prospecting work, I have found the use of a hand-auger and drill of immense value in this respect, and in my practice it has largely superseded, and always preceded, the other forms of investigation. The geologic setting and mineral relationships of seven European massive sulfide deposits that more or less conform to the bedding of the largely noncal-careous sedimentary rocks and/or bedded volcanics in which they are found are considered here. These orebodies consist largely of massive beds or lenses of sulfides usually surrounded by halos of disseminated sulfides and distorted by tectonic activity. The formations containing these deposits have been metamorphosed in varying degrees at times subsequent to their lithification. The ore-forming process is thought to be essentially volcanic, with the ore constituents being brought to the shallow-water site of deposition through tectonic fissures from magma chambers at depth as gases or relatively concentrated hydrother-mal solutions. Certain European ore deposits of base metal sulfide have previously been considered to be of hydro-thermal or magmatic origin, but today a number of European mining geologists consider them to be syngenetically produced. In an effort to provide American geologists with some idea of the reasons behind this change in thought, the geological settings of seven of these deposits have been studied. These are: Ldkken, Meggen, Rammelsberg, Ergani-Maden, Outokumpu, Boliden and Roros. These deposits lie in bedded rocks that have undergone metamorphism from causes not universally agreed upon; most of the formations were originally shales, and may have been intercalated with limey and occasionally quartzitic beds, volcanic tuff, agglomerate, extrusive lavas and usually basic intrusives. Deposits of the conformable type, however, are not confined to these rock types but may be in calcareous and associated igneous rocks or almost entirely in volcanics. These deposits may be closely associated in space with igneous rocks that, again, are usually basic types. Although the ages of the enclosing rocks range from mid-Precambrian (Boliden and Outokumpu) to Eocene (Ergani-Maden), the bulk of them are Paleozoic, with two (Meggen, and eammelsberg) being upper middle Devonian and two (LØkken and RØros) being Cambro-Ordovician. Geographically, two are in West Germany, four in Scandanavia and one in Turkey. Of the seven deposits, six are mined for copper, with three of these also producing zinc, and two lead; one is mined for zinc and minor lead. In the discussions of the seven conformable deposits that follow, I have attempted to present as uniform a treatment as their varying characters will permit. For each deposit, I have considered the stratigraphy of the area, its major structural characteristics, the form of the orebodies, their mineral content, and the origin of the ore. In the last of these subdivisions, I have presented only the viewpoint of those who believe the ores to have been formed by syngenetic processes, processes that went on at the same time as those which produced the beds that enclose the ores but that are not, in the deposits in question, thought to have been sedimentary in the strict sense of the term. The materials of which these orebodies are composed, it is suggested, did actually collect by falling through sea water to the floor of that portion of the sea in which they accumulated. The ore constituents, however, are believed by a considerable number of European geologists to have been added to the sea water from intratelluric sources, probably igneous magma chambers, as exhalations — hydrothermal solutions or volcanic gases. The effect of the encounter with sea water on these ejected gases or water-rich vapors was to precipitate their potentially solid constituents with great rapidity; they were deposited so quickly, in fact, that the amounj of normally accumulated mechanical or chemical sediment deposited over the same period of time was essentially negligible. The ores formed in this manner, however, are generally interbedded with normal sediments or with lava flows, or with any combination of these two types of rock-forming materials. Such departures as these deposits may have from their original mineral content and attitude are thought to be directly related to the degree of dynamic or static metamorphism that they may have undergone after their accumulation. The Huitzuco mines lie in north central Guerrero, Mexico; production has been about 90,000 flasks of quicksilver since 1873. Near-surface ores fill extinct mud geysers and the deep deposits are chambered veins, stock-works in brecciated blocks, and replacements in limestone. The epigenetic minerals livingstonite, stibnite and sulphur occur in limestone, gypsum and dolomite through a developed vertical range of 260 meters. The deepest workings expose an increased amount of stibnite, which probably indicates that the lower limit of mercury mineralization is being approached. A resurgence of heat and water formed geysers over an extended area after the period of mercury mineralization. Mud geysers, which are situated, in the outcrops, contain the secondary mercury minerals, cinnabar and barccnite in the gravel and mud filling the vents. A 150-ton flotation plant is in operation concentrating stope fills that assay 3.0 kg. of mercury per ton. In one open stope, which is more than one hectare in area and 60 m. high, 150,000 tons are available. Introduction The Huitzuco mercury mines are of interest because of the unusual occurrence of ore in extinct geyser vents and the presence of several rare mercury minerals. Some of the deposits have typical characteristics of the telethermal zone and there is a gradation towards typical epithermal mineralization in depth. Halse,1 Villarel1o,2 Mactear3 and Merri114 have described the geology and the early operations in the district, and Bar-cena5 and Mallet6 have described the rare mercury minerals, livingstonite and barcenite, found at Huitzuco. Location The village of Huitzuco lies in the north central part of the State of (Guerrero, Mexico, 27 km. (16.7 miles) east of Iguala, which is the largest and most important town in the area. Iguala is served by the Mexican National Railways and also by the Mexico City-Acapulco highway. The highway is surfaced from Mexico City to Iguala, a distance of 200 km. (124 miles) by road, and there is a fairly good, level, dirt road from Iguala to Huitzuco. The elevation above sea level is about 1000 m. (3280 ft.). THIS paper records the results of the earth resistivity surveys made in the Godavari river in connection with the Ramapadasagar project. After describing the topographical and geological features of the area, the results of the investigation at the several sites have been mentioned. Further, a detailed account has been given of the resistivity methods adopted, the apparatus used and the interpretation of the curves. The resistivity measurements carried out over the water course have been specially outlined, and a review of the verification of the electrical indications by drilling in a number of cases, has also been presented.

Although thousands of tons of stainless steel have been used successfully for many types of equipment, there have been few cases of failures due to the phenomenon described as stress corrosion cracking. During the past seven years only six cases of such failures have been drawn to our attention and investigated in the Research Laboratories with which the author is associated. These failures oc¬curred in two coffee urns, two wool con¬ditioning units, one dyeing machine, and another in a part of a steam-jacketed stock pot. In each case the equipment failed in a comparatively short time after exposure to conditions of high humidity at tempera¬tures in the range of 100 to 200 F. The failures in all cases were characterized by general embrittlement and cracking of the stainless steel, with only slight indications of general corrosion except at the cracks. The first failure of this type was a coffee urn returned for investigation in 1937. The top and bottom sections showed a general corrosive attack and embrittlement and cracking of the stainless steel. The chemical analyses of these sections were as follows:
