The ripper is not a new tool. In fact, it dates back as far as the Roman Empire. The Roman's ripper-mounted on wheels and shaped something like a plow-was pulled by oxen and was used to loosen the earth for the shovelers and basket carriers building the Appian Way. There are records of rippers being used in this country in railroad construction between 1860 and 1880. The tractor-mounted ripper, introduced a little over ten years ago, extended the capability of the ripper because of greatly improved maneuverability and the additional weight which could be brought to bear upon the ripper tooth. Increases through the last ten years in tractor weight and horsepower further increased ripper capability until now, in some geographic areas, hardly any rock is unchallenged by them.

THE numerous theories of hardening which have been advanced in recent years are all satisfactory in accounting for some of the phenomena observed in hardening metals, but none so far presented account for all of the facts observed. Some years ago one of the authors, R. S. Dean,' presented a theory to account for some of the properties accompanying work hardening. The present paper develops this theory further in the light of recent experimental work and extends it to other forms of hardening. Many of the ideas included have come from the writings and personally communicated thoughts of others. We have attempted to give proper credit in every case, but it is possible that we have not always done so. As an historical basis it is desirable here to review very briefly the hardening theories which have been current. The first comprehensive theory of work-hardening phenomena was due to Sir George Beilby.2 He contributed the idea that with cold work part of the structure of the metal was rendered amorphous and that-it was to this amorphous material that the cold-worked metal owed its difference in properties. According to Beilby's theory this amorphous material was a supercooled liquid and, therefore, had the characteristics of a vitreous material. That such a theory is not capable of explaining the property changes in metals has been repeatedly pointed out. This theory also allowed a slip to take place only once on a given plane, which, as has been pointed out by Jeffries and Archer13 is not consistent with the observed length of an, individual slip and the amount of elongation which can be obtained by wire drawing. The modifications, which have been proposed to this hypothesis to make it coincide with the experimental facts, have to a considerable extent robbed the theory of its clean-cut characteristics. The milling practice at Mascot, at present, consists of dry crushing to % in., jigging, fine grinding, and flotation. The ore arrives at the mill from two mines, No. 1 mine shaft being located in the mill proper, and No. 2 mine shaft being situated about 2000 ft. east of the mill. No. 2 mine is served by a coarse-crushing plant and aerial tramway to the mill bins. In jigging the No. 2 mine ore, 50 per cent. of the mill feed is rejected by the jigs as a jig tailing ranging from 5/8 in. to 10 mesh; the balance of this ore, after removing a jig concentrate, is ground to flotation feed. In jigging No. 1 mine ore, approximately 80 per cent. of the mill feed is rejected as a coarse jig tailing, and the balance is ground to flotation feed without the removal of a jig concentrate. The difference in the treatment is due to the fact that No. 2 mine ore carries a higher content of zinc than that from No. 1 mine. Of the total concentrates produced, 30 per cent. is made on jigs and 70 per cent. by flotation. At present, 1350 tons of No. 2 ore and 800 tons of No. 1 ore are treated each 24 hours. The use in the iron blast-furnace of slags high in magnesia has been generally condemned, not only on the ground that magnesia renders the slag less fusible, but also because it is said to have less power to remove sulphur from the iron. Percy? says the use of dolomite as a flux should obviously he avoided, because magnesia " tends to induce infusibility," but says nothing of its relation to sulphur in the charge. Bell suggests the absorption of SO2, by lime and magnesia in the blast-furnace, but leads the reader to suppose that the really active agent is lime. Heats of solution of silver and copper in dilute Ag-Cu-Sn alloys at 720°K have been determined using a liquid metal-solution calorieter. Values of the se2f-interaction coefficient n AgAghave been calculated at constant copper concentrations and n Cu Cuhas been determined at constant silver contents. The reliability of the experimental data is shown by the very good agreement between nCujAg and ij &$; these interaction coefficients have experimental values of -9100 and - 9590 cal per g-atom, respectively. Certain solution models are shown to be inadequate for prediction of solute interaction coefficients in dilute Ag-Cu-Sn alloys. In a previous publication' the results of a thermody-namic study of dilute Ag-Au-Sn alloys were presented. The present work represents the continuation of a program to investigate dilute alloys of the noble metals with tin and in particular is concerned with solute interactions in the Ag-Cu-Sn system. By determination of the magnitude and sign of the various interaction coefficients in dilute alloys it is possible to gain some understanding of the different types of solute-solute and so lute-solvent bonding changes that occur as the solute concentrations are varied. Hence systematic studies of alloys with similar physical characteristics as regards size, structure, electronegativity, and so forth, of their components can contribute a great deal to present theoretical knowledge of solutions. The recent definition of an enthalpy interaction coefficient, 11, by Lupis and Elliott2 is of particular value in calorimetric studies such as the present one: where j and i are solutes and s is the solvent; Si is the relative partial molar enthalpy of component i and x represents the mole fraction of solute or solvent. Values of ?Hi can be obtained directly by solution calorimetry and data for n are thus easily determined, often with a high degree of accuracy. ?Hi is related to the relative partial molar enthalpy at infinite dilution, ?Hi and to the enthalpy interaction coefficients by the expression: ?Hi?Hi + X;nz+ ... [2] The aim of the present work was to determine the self-interaction coefficients n AgAgand 178: in alloys of different compositions and also to establish values for n Agcg| and ncuAg. Since it is a thermodynamic requirement (resulting from the Maxwell-type relationships which can be applied to partial molar properties) that nAgcu and ncuAg should be equal, a further aim of this study was to demonstrate the agreement between experiment and theory. EXPERIMENTAL A description of the liquid metal-solution calorimeter used in this research has already been published,3 and no further details of its construction and operation will therefore be given here. Copper supplied by the American Smelting and Refining Co. was indicated by them as being 99.999 pct pure, and the silver obtained from A. D. Mackay, Inc., was also quoted as being 99.999 pct pure. A solvent bath consisting of between 70 and 80 g of 99.99 pct pure Sn was used for each series of experimental drops. Its weight was accurately determined and the appropriate amounts of copper or silver were added to give alloys of the desired composition. Approximately 0.00125 g-atom additions were used for determinations of the heat of solution of silver in the bath, while, for copper, specimens consisting of approximately 0.0015 g-atom were used. The heat capacity of the bath was determined at regular intervals during a series of drops using tin or tungsten calibration samples. The heats of solution of silver and copper in pure tin were first determined as a function of their concentration in order to establish the self-interaction coefficients 7AgAg and ncucu Alloys containing a constant 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, and 0.04 mole fraction of copper were then used to study 17:: in alloys of different copper content, while alloys of the same mole fractions of silver were used to determine equivalent data for 178: at constant silver concentrations. The composition of the bath was held at the desired copper or silver concentration by making calculated additions of the appropriate solute throughout the experiment. From the limiting values of ?HAg in the constant copper content alloys it was possible to study ?HAg as a function of xCu and hence to determine 42:. A similar analysis of the re, values permitted calculation of nAgcu. Heat content and heat capacity data from Hultgren et al* were used to calculate heat of solution values from the measured heat effects at the experimental temperature of 720°K. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Determinations of ?HAg. A preliminary investigation of the heat of solution of silver in pure tin at 720°K was first made in order to establish the value of nAgAg before additions of copper were made and also to compare the value of ?HOAg(l) with that obtained in the previous study of Ag-Au-Sn alloys.' Part III of a four-part series on the history of steelmaking in the US, describes furnace developments, improvements during the last few decades, and the contribution of the AIME. THE invention of the dolomite machine was a great boon to the open-hearth furnaceman. By speeding up bottom making, it helped to increase tons per hour and decrease cost. The first homemade unit was built and operated before 1925 at the South Side works of Jones & Laughlin Steel Corp., Pittsburgh The first commercial machine, similar to those known today, was built for the Donner Steel Co., Buffalo, N. Y., in 1925. Heavy slab buckstays, 6 in. by 15 in., supplanted lighter I-beam buckstays as furnace framework in the middle 1920's. They greatly improved the rigidity of the furnace binding. Although the first sloping back wall had been in- stalled prior to 1920 on a small basic open-hearth foundry furnace at Columbus, Ohio, the impetus to install such back walls universally in ingots shops came after S. Naismith installed the first one on an open-hearth furnace at Illinois Steel Company's South works in June 1924. Before that event, back- wall life had already been improved somewhat by the use of chrome rock or metal-encased basic brick. Here again, these changes heralded major for- ward steps in furnace design, decreased costs, in- creased production, and improved safety and working conditions on the back standing of the furnace. Fuels Up to 1930, a number of different kinds of fuel were used to melt and refine steel in American open hearth furnaces. During World War I, powdered coal was used in a few plants as an open-hearth fuel, but because of the high sulfur and ash content in the coals, many operational difficulties arose. There were also dust, explosion, and accident hazards, so that after the War its use was discontinued. In some steel-manufacturing centers, natural gas was available as a fuel and gave good performance. In most steel-manufacturing centers, operators had to rely on producer gas made from bituminous coals in producer gas houses. Low-sulfur low-ash, high-fusion coals required for the manufacture of such gas were not readily available. The quality of producer gas was uncertain. The gas had to be pre-heated. Maintenance problems connected with the use of this fuel were serious. Tons per hour per month was unsatisfactory. Although petroleum had been first discovered by Edwin L. Drake at Titusville, Pa., in 1859, it was not until the early 1930's that heavy fuel oil residues for open-hearth use began to appear on the market. They were cheap; the calorific value was high, and it was not necessary to pass this fuel through the checkers to preheat it. Various plants began to use such oil as an open-hearth fuel. Others used it in combinations with tar, coke-oven, and/or blast-furnace gases. Because of its low calorific value, blast-furnace gas had to be preheated in the checkers. As the time allotted is short, we can present only a general idea of the oil laws in the Latin-American republics, as a supplement to Bulletin 206 of the Department of the Interior compiled under the direction of J. W. Thompson of the Bureau of Mines and entitled "Petroleum Laws of All America." We shall not discuss the European colonies in Latin-America nor the island republics. As to the countries discussed, we shall attempt to give the main features of such special petroleum legislation as has been adopted prior to the early part of this year; where no special petroleum laws exist, we must look to the mining codes for light on the petroleum policy. As the laws and regulations for the extraction of the metals are often difficult of application to, and are lacking in many essentials for, the petroleum industry, it is best for persons or companies desiring to enter, on a large scale, into the petroleum exploration and development of countries not having special petroleum legislation, to obtain a concession contract from the executive of the country under consideration, and to have the concession approved by the congress. If this concession, which would then be a special law, contains nothing contrary to the constitution of that country and does not infringe on vested rights of third parties, it should be reasonably safe. If in such country there is some doubt as to whether the petroleum subsoil is owned by the nation or the private surface owner, only public lands should be covered with the concession. Guatemala is the only republic in the group that discriminates directly against foreigners. Bolivia, Ecuador, Mexico and Venezuela require waivers of diplomatic protection.' Colombia requires foreigners to agree to be bound by its alien law. In addition,Mexico makes it unlawful for foreigners to acquire direct ownership of real estate, including mines, within a zone of 50 km. along the coasts and one of 100 km. alongitsland

In a previous article1 we have described a technique for measuring the relative intensities of gamma rays from the radioactive elements occurring naturally in geological formations along the walls of a borehole. The apparatus consisted of two Geiger-Müller tubes mounted inside a pressure-tight chamber. Each counter tube was coupled separately to an amplifier and a frequency meter at the surface by means of a multiconductor cable upon which the chamber was suspended. The output currents of the two frequency meters were recorded on a photographic paper as the chamber was moved in the hole. These traces showed remarkable correlation with the geologic formations, as evidenced by comparison with commercial electrical logs.2 Owing to the penetrating power of the gamma rays, logs may be taken in both open and cased boreholes. The apparatus has recently been changed somewhat. One of the counter tubes has been removed and a stage of amplification has been added inside the chamber. This arrangement seems to give a more favorable signal-to-noise ratio and satisfactory logs can be now made in cased holes and also in open holes as previously. Briefly described, the chamber moving in the hole is made of 3½-in. drill pipe and is about 10 ft. long. There is an additional extension about 2 ft. long at the top, inside which cable connections are made. The Geiger-Müller tube is mounted inside the bottom end of the chamber. Above this is the vacuum-tube amplifier with its batteries and transformer. In the top part of the chamber, small 45-volt batteries are mounted, which in part supply the high voltage for the counter tube. Additional voltage is supplied from the surface through the multiconductor cable upon which the chamber is suspended. Also, the output of the transformer in the single-stage amplifier is coupled to another single-stage amplifier at the surface through this cable. METALLURGISTS are properly interested in papers dealing with subjects ranging from the theories of the metallic state to very practical details on the use of metals. A review of theoretical metallurgy naturally excludes papers concerned with the usefulness of metals and limits itself to those concerned purely with the science of metals. Even in this more limited field the reviewer is confronted with thousands of papers dealing with facts and theories of metallic behavior, from which he can select only a few hundred. The selection is necessarily highly arbitrary. Certain classes of papers definitely fall within the scope of this review. Thus, papers on the deformation of metals, on the structure of alloys, on recrystallization, to select only a few, are fully represented. Other subjects, which verge on what is generally accepted as the science of metals, such as the magnetic properties of metals, the less familiar electrical properties and theories, adsorption of gases by metal surfaces, and the like, are treated scantily. Particular attention is given to reviews of subjects that fall with in the groups chosen; in a summary such as this, which is largely in the nature of a progress report, capably written reviews are of importance, particularly since the monograph and text book literature is so meager in this field.

While the size of the blast-furnaces used for smelting leadand copper-ores has constantly increased, during late years, the manner of removing the slag from the furnace to the slag-dump has (until quite recently, at least) practically remained the same. The only appliance in practical use has been the two-wheeled slag-pot, holding about 300 to 400 pounds of slag, or as much as one man could manage to pull or push on a smooth, hard surface. When these slag-pots on wheels were first introduced, the daily capacity of a lead or copper blast-furnace hardly reached 30 tons of smelting-charge. With furnaces of this size, and even when the capacity had been doubled, this kind of slag-pot answered well enough. All the improvements made were in the construction of these pots and not in an increase of their size, which was limited by the weight which one man could handle. But the size of the furnace went on increasing. The daily consumption of one furnace rose gradually to 75 tons, 100 tons, and even more. The writer had occasion to construct some of these furnaces, which, in their day, were among the largest, if not the largest, of the water-jacketed kind then in existence. A water-jacketed furnace will always smelt more in the same time than a furnace with brick walls. Already, in those days, the slag-removal from these enlarged furnaces received due attention by the writer. The removal of 60 tons of slag in 24 hours, in pots holding only 300 pounds each, will require 400 pots to be filled in 24 hours; and when the amount.of slag increases to 90 tons, 600 pots will be required. That is to say, in the last case, 25 pots in each hour, or 1 pot each 24 minutes, will have to be put under the slagspout, filled, pulled away, and replaced with another. The experiments herein described were carried on in 1908-9 by- the State Geological Survey of Kansas. Some months before taking up work on black powder the Survey had resumed work on an interrupted investigation of explosions in coalmines, a subject which is engaging the attention of numerous investigators. An unusual number of serious disasters has directed to the subject a study which discloses the disquieting fact that, in the United States, the ratio of lives lost per ton of coal mined has been 011 the increase. Methods of coal-mining have changed to some extent with the great increase of output, attained in comparatively recent years. These changes involve the working of very extensive mines, with increased difficulty of ventilation, increased accumulation of coal-dust, and a very great increase in the amount of explosive used. This last point assumes truly startling proportions when it is carefully observed. In the fields of the Middle West it is not now uncommon for a miner to use six kegs (150 lb.) of black powder in a " pay" of two weeks, while within the memory of men still active, one keg (25 Ib.) would last two men for a " pay." So great has the use of explosives become in some fields that the skilled coal-miner is hard to find, and the coal is not mined, but blasted. Early in the last century, Isaac Tyson, Jr., of Baltimore, was a miner of ores of chromium, iron and copper, and a manufacturer of their products. He was first to erect in America, for the reduction of copper-ore, a German blast-furnace, which was copied largely, and the improved successors of which are now universally used in this country. Dying in 1862, he left his manufacture of alkali bichromates to his eldest son, Jesse, while his work in the departments of mining and smelting descended to his second son, James Wood Tyson, the subject of this notice. The father had mined chrome-ores in Maryland and Pennsylvania and manufactured their products at Baltimore; he had mined and reduced copper-ores in both these States; iron-ores at Tyson Furnace in SW. Vermont, and copper-ores in the northern and central parts of that State. Among his holdings was what later became the Ely mine, now called Copperfield. The son extended this work to central Georgia, and carried the family mining interests to the Pacific coast, where he took up chrome-mines in Oregon and elsewhere, as far south as southern California. On December 3, 1900, in the 73d year of his age, James Wood Tyson passed away, in his native city of Baltimore, charging his third son, James Wood Tysou, Jr., with the labors which, 38 years before, his father had resigned to him. A method is presented for estimating the effective directional permeability ratio and the direction of maximum and minimum permeabilities in anisotropic oil reservoirs. The method is based on the principle that production from a well in an anisotropic reservoir results in elliptical isopo-tentials about the well, rather than circular. Bottom-hole pressure data from three observation wells surrounding a producing well are required to apply the method. The method involves fitting field pressure data to a set of general charts of isopotentials and making a few simple calculations until a solution is found. The method is based on a steady-state equation for homogeneorrs fluid pow. In addition to the method, a brief discussion of the theory underlying it is presented. INTRODUCTION The existence of a different permeability in one direction than another in oil reservoirs has been mentioned in several papers. Hutchinson' reported laboratory tests on 10 limestone cores and pointed out that one-half of them showed significant, preferential, directional permeability ratios, the average being about 16:1. Johnson and Hughesz reported a permeability trend in the Bradford field in the northeast-southwest direction with flow being 25 to 30 per cent greater in that direction. Barfield, Jordan and Moore -eported an effective permeability ratio of 144:1 in the Spraberry. Crawford and Landrum4 showed that sweep efficiencies could often vary by a factor of two to four, and sometimes considerably more, due to variations in flooding direction and patterns in anisotropic media. These findings indicate that the poss'bility of anisotropy may be worthy of consideration in the development of an oil field. In considering this, it should first be determined if anisotropy exists. If it does, the direction of the maximum and minimum permeabilities and the ratio of their magnitudes are quantities which can be of value in planning the most efficient well-spacing patterns. Past methods of determining these quantities have included analysis of oriented cores and analysis of flooding performance of pilot injection patterns. In recent work, Elkins and Skov5 resented an analysis of the pressure behavior in the Spraberry which accounted for anisotropic permeability. This work was based on the transient pres- sure distribution in a porous and permeable medium, with the solution expressed as an exponential integral function involving rock and fluid properties. The purpose of this study is to provide a method, based on steady-state equations, of estimating the direction and relative magnitude of permeabilities in an oil reservoir from field pressure data and well locations only. The method presented is based on work by Muskat6 which shows that Laplace's equation represents the steady-state pressure distribution for homogeneous fluid flow in homogeneous, anisotropic media if the co-ordinates of the system are shrunk or expanded by replacing x with it is desirable that data be obtained early in the history of a field because knowledge of an anisotropic condition would allow new wells to be spaced in such a manner that reservoir development and subsequent secondary recovery programs could be planned more efficiently. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS A brief discussion of the theoretical basis on which the graphical solution was developed is presented in this section. Muskat's two-dimensional6 olution for the pressure distribution in an homogeneous, anisotropic medium with an homogeneous fluid flowing can be algebraically manipulated to show that the isobaric lines are perfect ellipses. The ratio of the major axis to the minor axis, a/b, is related to the permeability ratio, k,/k,, as follows. alb = dk,/k,--...........(1) It can also be shown that the pressure varies linearly with the logarithm of the radial distance from the producing well. However, the gradient along any ray is a function of the orientation of that ray, and a ..xiable is present when anisotropy exists which cancels out for a radial (isotropic) system. For a system such as that described, a dimensionless pressure-drop ratio was developed which is completely independent of the actual magnitude of the pressures. This was done by arranging Muskat's solution in such a way that aIl variables cancelled out except k,/k, and well positions. However, this solution depends on having a co-ordinate system with axes coinciding with the major and minor axes of the elliptical isobars. Thus, it was necessary to introduce a co-ordinate system rotation factor. The two unknown variables are then k,/k. and 0, and the two measured dimensionless pressure-drop ratios are related to the unknown variables as follows.
