(New York meeting, February, 1913.) IN the study of ore deposits water plays a very prominent part. The small group of igneous ores involve it least, but in all the rest it is an invariable feature. The ground-water, therefore, is perhaps as appropriate a subject for discussion before a session of the American Institute of Mining Engineers as any topic which might be selected. The theme is if anything the more appropriate, because two very important contributions to it have already appeared in the Transactions. The great essay in 1893 of Franz Posepny,1 systematized and classified the subject, and was doubtless not without its influence in leading to the presentation in 1900, by C. R. Van Hise, of an important contribution entitled Some Principles Controlling the Deposition of Ores.2 We all recall the discussions of 10 or 12 years ago, and the interest in these themes which then prevailed in the Institute. They are collectively accessible in the separate edition wisely assembled by Dr. Raymond, and now to be supplemented by the Emmons Volume. Views have been progressing in the past decade or more, and new evidence has been brought to light. A general summary and concise statement may, therefore, not be without interest.

THE desire of the engineers over the last few years, growing out of their contact with public affairs, that this Institute should take a wider vision than the narrower field of technology and should apply its skill to the development of civic problems which must lay in their foundation on engineering, has led to this discussion today. Some of us in San Francisco, in discussing this question of the relation of the engineers to civic problems, raised the question as to whether or not in this national emergency it was not the duty of the Mining Engineers to bring, forward their combined skill and knowledge and experience to bear upon the problems of the coal industry. This industry, considered as a whole, is one of the worst functioning industries in the United States. It is equipped with capital, with machinery, plants and labor to a peak load at least 20 per cent. above the average necessity. This peak load, therefore, involves the use of probably 100,000 men diverted from other productive industries; it involves an intermittency of employment through its whole personnel that results not only in a long train of human woe, but results also in a higher cost of coal -to the general public. The problem of whether the industry can, by any device, be cured or even partially cured of its intermittency, is solely an engineering problem. It is therefore an apropos problem for this Institute. Your President and myself and others thought that we could best develop this discussion by calling upon men of large experience in the particular branches of the soft coal industry, to bring the facts in front of this general committee, with a view to an exhaustive discussion and perhaps subsequently the appointment of a committee to formulate those facts and such remedies as may be developed into a report that would be of constructive value.

THIS paper presents evidence of the general occurrence of methane in a large number of the coal fields of the United States and substantiates the apparent unnecessary differences in the ventilation requirements and codes in the various states, as was brought to the attention of the Committee on Mine Ventilation of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers at its Pittsburgh meeting in October, 1925, by J. A. Garcia.1 The data in his report have been compiled from the files of the Gas Laboratory of the Pittsburgh Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines and represent samples collected throughout the various states and submitted for analysis by its engineers, also by mine operators and State mining departments, since 1911. Several thousand analyses were available but most of them were rejected because they represented abnormal conditions, undefined place of sampling, special investigations, or duplications in the same mine. Only those samples were included which, without reasonable doubt, were ascertained to fall within three major classes, namely, main return, air splits, and face and rooms of live workings. In the case of air splits, and face and room samples, only the one which contained the highest percentage of methane found in a given mine was taken.

The low temperature recrystalliza-tion of very heavily rolled copper produces a fine grained structure with a high degree of preferred orientation. Additional heating to within a few hundred degrees of the melting point may induce an abrupt and pronounced increase in the grain size, with the resulting crystals having new orientations. This behavior at high temperatures is commonly termed "secondary recrystallization." Several investigations have dealt with the phenomenon arid have served to bare many features of the beha~ior.1-4 In general,observations have been made on the sizes and shapes of the grains, and data have been presented showing the existence of an induction period in isothermal experiments. Although it has been well established that the orientation before the change is statistically (100) 10011, the so-called "cubically aligned" texture, there is no such agreement on the orientation after the change. For example, Dahl and Pawlek1 describe it as being equivalent to an approximately 30" rotation about the [l00] axis of the ideal cubic texture which is parallel to the rolling direction, the resulting orientation being near (210)[001]; and Cook and Richards2 find an orientation of approximately (110)[L12]. Since the completion of most of the work to be reported in this paper, Rowles and Boas3 have published their ver] illuminating paper on "secondary recrystallization," in which they present convincing evidence for a third orientation and show that their esperiments give no evidence for either of the other two orientations. The orientation is described as equivalent to an approximately 30° rotation about a [ 111] pole of the ideal cubic orientation. The existence of a variety of reported orientations is not unique for copper, for a similar state of affairs exists for other systems that have been studied— aluminum, nickel, nickel-iron alloys, and others. It seems therefore that the existence of this variety does not necessarily constitute a contradiction, but rather indicates that different experimental conditions yield different results. The fundamental nature of the phenomenon has not been elucidated. However, it has been generally recognized that the large grains could be the end product of growth of a few select grains already existing in the sample in minor amounts—too small to allow detection—or that entirely new ones could be formed by a process of nu-cleation and growth. Existing experimental evidence does not distinguish between these two most apparent possibilities. Nevertheless, the former has been more generally favored largely because our current understanding of the state of an annealed metal has not made it seem reasonable to expect a nucleation event to occur at temperatures above those required for the primary recrystallization. Observations on the Preparation and Heating of Twin-bearing Cubically Aligned Copper The starting material used throughout. the investigation was a bar of OFHC copper, forged and annealed at 950°C. Visual inspection showed the grain size to be around 0.5 mm, and did not disclose any preferred orientation. A chemical analysis showed the following composition: Cu + Ag— 99.99 Pct S — 0.005 pct 0 — <0.005 pct For the preparation of cubically aligned copper, ¾ in. thick slabs were cut from the bar, heavily pickled in concentrated HNO3 and cold rolled to sheets about 0.012 in. thick. The reduction in thickness was approximately 98.5 pct. Standardized annealing techniques were followed. Samples to be heated were lightly dusted with alumina in order to prevent sticking and then sandwiched between 1/16 in. copper plates. The resulting sandwich was heavily wrapped with copper sheet, and then annealed in air. The protection was such that only very thin films of oxide were formed. That the associated light oxidation of the samples had no specific effect on the recrystallization behavior was shown by the similar results that could be obtained on annealing in highly purified and dried hydrogen. Two methods were used in bringing samples to temperature: (1) by placing the package directly in the furnace at temperature and (2) by placing the package in the furnace at room temperature, and then slowly increasing the temperature. The corresponding heating rates are illustrated in Fig 1, and will be referred to as "rapid" and "slow," respectively. Unless specified otherwise, all anneals will be of the former type. Numerous articles have been written in regard to the man who mines coal and he has been likened to brave men in all ages who have gone out to conquer some unknown hazard. Now, however, modern mining is no longer something to be avoided but is a vocation that anyone can well be proud of, with remuneration equal to or above that of almost any industry. A concerted effort is being made each day by both the operator of most mines as well as the state and Federal inspectors to see that coal mines are as safe or safer than any other industry. However, it is true that mine fires and explosions have occurred in the mining industry since its earliest inception. One of the earliest accurate references to such an occurrence is found in the transactions of the Royal Society of London. In the Colliery Managers&apos; Handbook, 1898, Caleb Pamely writes of an explosion that occurred at Fatfield, England, which resulted in the death of 69 persons in August 1708. It is interesting to note that he states, "Three of them, viz, two men and a woman, were blown quite up from the bottom of the shaft, fifty-seven fathoms deep, into the air, to a considerable distance from the mouth of the pit." From this statement it is noted that women were employed as miners in England during that period. Numerous mine fires and explosions have occurred in mines in this and other countries. Several of them claimed more than 100 lives. Among the greatest losses was a mine explosion in West Virginia that claimed 361 and a mine fire in Illinois that claimed 259. Although no one would minimize the seriousness of a mine fire or an explosion, yet in too many cases they have been publicized out of proportion. This especially is so when compared with the accident rate of other industries or on our highways. It should be remembered that of these general classifications of hazards in mining, mine fires and explosions rank very low in the accident rate in any given year. In modern times the coal industry has completed two years or more, at various times, without a single major disaster. The

THE Birmingham red iron ore district in Jeffer-son County, north central Alabama, Fig. 1, is bounded on the northwest by the Warrior and Plateau coal fields and on the southeast by the Cahaba and Coosa coal fields. The area of study includes the ridge and valley between Red Mountain and Shades Mountain, Fig. 2, approximately 70 square miles extending from Homewood in the northeast to Greenwood in the southwest. The district is one of the most important producers of hematite in the United States, with an annual production of about 7 million tons.&apos; The amount of hematite mined between 1870 and 1950 ranged from 6 to 16 pct of the nation&apos;s total annual production,&apos; and the iron and steel products from blast furnaces in the Birmingham district supply the entire southeastern section of the country. Most of the mining in the Birmingham district is from slope mines along the outcrop of the ore on Red Mountain, such as Red Ore, Muscoda, Spaul- ding, and Sloss. The Pyne and the Shannon are the shaft mines of the area. The Shannon mine of Republic Steel Corp., in the central part of the area under study, is in Shades Valley at the foot of Shades Mountain. The Pyne mine of Woodward Iron Co. is 2 miles east of Readers Gap in Shades Valley. The hydrology problem has become more prevalent as mining in the area has progressed downdip. An extensive exploratory diamond drilling program is necessary to determine areas where water pressures and abnormal flows are excessive. This operation, added to higher pumpage rates, has greatly increased the costs of ore extraction. In November 1952 the U. S. Geological Survey began a detailed study of occurrence and movement of ground water in the iron mining areas of the Birmingham district. The study is a part of a small-scale but nationwide program to develop data that will be of help to the mining industry in solving mine water problems. The area of the study, in the Ridge and Valley province of the Appalachian system, Fig. 1, is a series of alternate ridges and valleys trending northeast. The principal ridges are Red Mountain, altitude about 1000 ft, and Shades Mountain, about 1100 ft. Shades Valley is between these two ridges, and its lowest point is about 480 ft. Shades Moun-

While the recrystallization properties of most of the practically important metals are known in considerable detail, those of lead are still relatively little known in spite of some valuable contributions in recent years. This condition probably is due to the difficulties involved in applying the usual methods of investigation. The microscopic method of discriminating between the elongated deformed grains of the familiar lenticular shape and the equiaxed recrys-tallized grains is not successful with fully refined lead: lenticular grains cannot be seen under the microscope with any amount of deformation whatever. The probable cause of this phenomenon was recognized long ago. With large deformation the time of recrystallization at room temperaturc is shorter than the period of preparation of the specimen for microscopic examination; with small deformation the deformed grains arc not noticeably elongated in the first place. However, with small cleformation the migration of the grain boundaries can be observed. The only systematic investigations yet published on the recrystallization of lead, those by R. S. Russell, 1-3 make use of the conditions just described. Russell considered recrystallization completed when no further migration of boundaries could be observed. A serious objection to this method arises from the fact that there is no evidence to support the view that grain-boundary migration results only from recrystallization. If such migration does result from other sources after recrystallization is completed—after the deformed grains have been replaced by new unde-formed grains—the "time of recrystallization" as determined by Russell may be too long. Furthermore, the method is subject to the above.-mentioned limitation because of the unavoidable period of preparation of the sample. According to Russell, even with the fastest technique 5 min. clapsed before the deformed samples were ready for examination, and consequently no reearystallization time shorter than 5 min. could be measured. Whether we have occasion to think of it or not, an adequate and economic supply of energy fuels is vital to each of us. It is interesting to look ahead at the way in which fuels from supplementary sources will begin to enter into the energy mix to help meet the long-term national energy needs. From 1947 to 1965, the average annual rate of growth of energy consumption was 2.7%, with total energy demand in 1965 being equivalent to 54 quadrillion Btu&apos;s. During this short period of 18 years, the cumulative output of coal in the U.S. was 9.6 billion tons; natural gas, 193.5 trillion cu ft; and crude oil, 45.9 billion bbl. During the next decade and a half the nation&apos;s energy requirements are expected to grow at an average rate of 3.3% yearly, with consumption of energy expected to reach an annual rate of about 88 quadrillion Btu&apos;s by 1980, or 63% over the 1965 level.

INTRODUCTION Idarado Mining Company, a subsidiary of Newrnont Mining Corporation, is situated high in the San Juan Mountains in southwestern Colorado. Portals, offices and surface plants are located near the towns of Ouray and Telluride at elevations ranging from 9,000 to 12,000 feet. The Ouray portion of the development was initiated in 1943. Upon completion in 1945 of a 250-ton mill, processing of development ores containing copper, lead and zinc was undertaken; thus, serving as a pilot testing unit for larger scale milling operations. These facilities were subsequently enlarged and utilized until 1956. Meanwhile, in 1953 Idarado had acquired The Telluride Mines Company, 62 miles distant by highway; however, only six miles via a network of tunnels which eventually linked the two workings. Extensive underground development and increased ore production necessitated reconstruction and expansion of the milling plant. The facility was designed to accomodate processing of 1700 tons of ore daily. This goal was achieved and it represents the current daily output. MINERALOGY The veins are a compound fissure which have undergone several stages of mineralization. The first stage is represented by complex ores of copper, lead and zinc in a quartz gangue. IN PAST YEARS, engineering educators and others have been able to study the problems relating to en-gineering education in the United States with only inadequate and, frequently, inaccurate data at their command. For the first time there is now available fairly full and accurate information on this subject, gathered and compiled by the Board of Investigation and Coordination of the Society for the Promotion of Engineering Education. This board, of which W. E. Wickenden is the director, has for the past four years been carrying out fact-finding investigations into "the objects of engineering education and the fitness of the present day curriculum," under a grant of funds from the Carnegie Corporation of New York. Twelve bulle-tins have already been published by the board and others are in the process of preparation. The studies made, thus far, have been of the various phases of engineering education in general as well as of the major branches of engineering. Within the past year. the board has completed a study of mining engi-neering education by means of a questionnaire sent to members of the Institute. A special committee, con-sisting of Charles E. Locke, Allen H. Rogers and the writer, cooperated with the board in drafting certain parts of the questionnaire and in selecting the mailing list. Similar studies have been made through the mem-bers of the four other national societies. The results of these studies have been published only in mimeo-graphed form, therefore, in order to place the data before the members of the Institute an incomplete sum-mary of the replies to the A. I. M. E. questionnaire is here given. The full report will be available for distri-bution at the annual meeting in February. The questionnaire was sent to 306 members of the Institute, a proportion about equal to the proportion of the membership of the other national societies can-vassed; 152 members replied to the questionnaire, 55 per cent of whom had received college degrees in some branch of engineering connected with the mineral in-dustry. Forty-seven educational institutions were rep-resented in the replies. Seventeen different positions were held by the members who replied, with 24 con-sulting engineers at the head of the list, 20 managers, 16 superintendents, 11 presidents, 10 professors, 6 deans, and others.

An experimental technique has been developed for carrying out a dynamic tensile stress-strain test in which plastic strain is measured continuously throughout the microstrain region extending through the macroflow region to total deformations of 5 pet. The tests were carried out on niobium, samples having interstitial impurity levels of 160 and -800 ppm at temperatures ranging from room temperature down to 100°K. A band spectrum of activation energies was obtained from calculations based on the measured activation volumes and temperature dependence of flow stress. The inability of a single rate-controlling process to predict such a phenomenon has led to the proposal that several sequential rate-controlling dislocation mechanisms are operative in the preyield micro-strain region. These are thought to be: the motion of geometrical kinks, the formation of double kinks in edges, and finally in the macrostrain region the formation of double kinks in screws. In less pure niobium the effect of interstitial impurities is shown to be dominant in the microstrain region, suggesting that a fourth probable mechanism is overcoming interstitial barriers instead of geometrical kink motion and the formation of double kinks in edge dislocations. THE principal fundamental aim of most mechanical properties studies of crystalline solids is to determine the dislocation mechanisms responsible for the plastic behavior. The extension of such studies to the region of preyield microstrain behavior has received renewed attention in the past few years as the details of macroscopic flow behavior have become better understood. For the most part, microstrain studies have been carried out using one of two variations of a single experimental technique.1 The first method involves loading the sample at a constant extension rate to a predetermined stress level (less than the macroscopic yield stress), instantaneously unloading, and then determining the extent of plastic deformation to a sensitivity of 10"6. The microscopic stress-strain curve is then constructed from the results of a repeated series of such individual measurements, each of which involves loading to an incrementally higher stress level, by relating the accumulated plastic microstrain for each step to the maximum applied stress in that step. The second variation, also carried out by step-wise increases in stress, measures the total strain to a sensitivity of ~10"6 and relates the maximum stress to the area of closed hysteresis loops that are generated under certain conditions (namely, prestrained samples). The foregoing methods have yielded interesting information about the nature of preyield deformation and plastic response to stresses below the yield stress, but they offer certain disadvantages for studying the dynamic behavior of dislocations. In the first method it is physically impossible to specify a plastic strain rate inasmuch as the test sample is reexposed, as it is loaded to its maximum stress in a particular step, to lower stresses at which flow will take place. The strain corresponding to a given stress level on the stress-microstrain curve thus generated will then always be greater than that at the corresponding stress level of a truly dynamic test carried out at the same extension rate. The second method has been used to obtain correlations with dynamic macroscopic flow parameters by applying dislocation damping theory to the hysteresis loop areas.2 The approach has had some success but suffers in that only samples that have been prestrained a few percent can be studied. Drilling for oil and gas in Arkansas in 1934 showed more activity than in any year since 1929; with a total of 96 completions, including 36 oil wells, 1 gas well and 59 dry holes. Of the producers, the lone gas well and 35 oil wells were in old fields, and one wildcat producer opened a new pool. Of the dry holes, 16 were in or near fields and 43 were wildcats. The total reported initial daily production of the oil wells was 9013 bbl., averaging 252 bbl. per well. Active drilling operations numbered 65 at the close of the year, compared with 26 at the beginning.

Various factors must be considered in an engineering evaluation of gravity-drainage reservoirs. Among these are: (1) the effect of producing rate on total oil recovery; (2) the effect upon well productivity and ultimate recovery of the pressure level maintained during the producing life of the reservoir; (3) the economic advantage of full or partial pressure maintenance; and (4) estimate of the rate of gas production and injection and the possible purchase of gas under conditions of full pressure maintenance to ascertain compressor facilities needed. All of these factors can be evaluated only when a reliable method is employed for determining reservoir performance in gravity-drainage reservoirs. The purpose of this paper is to present a general method for calculating the performance of a gravity-drainage reservoir. This method is applicable for conditions of complete pressure maintenance, partial pressure maintenance and normal pressure depletion. Provisions are made to take into account variations throughout the reservoir of reservoir configuration, changes in permeability and fluid composition. Based on the method presented in this paper, an IBM 650 computer program has been developed. The past performance of an actual gravity-drainage reservoir producing under conditions of declining pressure and no gas injection was duplicated using this program. INTRODUCTION In tilted reservoirs the production of oil is influenced by drainage of oil from upstructure to downstructure locations. When this downstructure drainage of oil is sufficient to cause effective segregation of the gas and oil in a reservoir, the reservoir is usually classified as a segregation drive or gravity-drainage reservoir. (Discussion will be restricted to gravity-drainage reservoirs which have no encroachment of edge water.) The important feature in gravity-drainage reservoirs is the density difference between reservoir oil and gas. These phases tend to segregate in the reservoir with the result that in the gas cap the oil saturation is maintained at a higher level by drainage of oil from the gas-cap area. Oil can be produced from the oil zone at a low gas-oil ratio and reservoir energy is thereby conserved. The standard material balance in not adequate for predicting gravity-dramage reservoir performance because it does not take into account the difference in saturation above and below the gas-oil contact. Several authors&apos;.&apos; have presented methods for calculating the performance of gravity-drainage reservoirs in which reservoir pressure is maintained constant by gas injection into the gas cap. Using some simplifying assumptions, these methods can be employed with a desk calculator to give acceptable results. The problem of predicting the performance of gravity-drainage reservoirs under the conditions of declining reservoir pressure is many time more complex than that of constant pressure. fierefore, attempis to develop a method suitable for desk calculation have required excessively simplified assumptions. In the past several years, highspeed digital computers have become more widely available for reservoir engineering problems. These corn puters are well suited to problems such as the prediction of the performance of gravity-drainage reservoirs with pressure decline. Many of the simplifying assumptions necessary for hand computation can be eliminated so that a realistic approach to the gravity-drainage process can be made. CONCEPTUAL PICTURE OF OIL MOVEMENT IN GRAVITY-DRAINAGE RESERVOIRS Before attempting to develop an analytical treatment for conditions occuring in a gravity-drainage reservoir, a concept should be formed concerning the movement of fluids in the reservoir as oil is produced. A review of the literature&apos;.&apos; shows that it is customary to classify gravity-drainage operations into two categories—(1) with complete pressure maintenance, and (2) with declining pressure. The same line of reasoning will be followed in presenting the concept of the movement of fluids in the reservoir because it is easier to visualize the movement of fluids under conditions of complete pressure maintenance. After discussing complete pressure maintenance, an analogy will be made between that and the case of declining pressure. It should be kept in mind throughout that the final aim for the problem of solving gravity-drainage performance with digital computers will be to develop a general program for any kind of gravity-drainage reservoir. COMPLETE PRESSURE MAINTENANCE One feature which is generally common in gravity-drainage reservoirs is a gas cap located at the top of the structure. This is shown in Fig. 1(a). It is usually assumed that the rate-determining step in the migration of a grain boundary involves the thermally activated transfer of single atoms across the interface. Chemical reaction rate theory then gives a migration rate which is proportional to the driving force when this is small compared to kT.1 In their recrystallization studies on aluminum, Gordon and vandermeer2 obtained data which was capable of providing the first experimental test of this proportionality. They correlated stored energy (driving force) release measurements determined calorimetrically with fraction recrystal-lized kinetic (growth rate) data acquired metallo-graphically at a temperature where a significant amount of recovery takes place concurrently with recrystallization. Within experimental error, the results of Gordon and Vandermeer confirmed experimentally, at least over a limited range, the linear dependence of boundary migration (growth) rate on driving force in accordance with theory. In obtaining these results, however, an incorrect, implicit assumption was made in relating the average instantaneous growth rate of the recrystallized grains to the measured fraction recrystallized kinetic data. The purpose of this present note is to point out and correct this assumption. An alternate approach, whereby a more proper average growth rate can be calculated from the recrystallization kinetic data, is presented. The earlier data, reevaluated in terms of this new approach, show the same general trend as before so that the original conclusion of Gordon and vandermeer2 is still valid. As was shown in a detailed study3 of the geometrical features of recrystallization in aluminum, the colonies of recrystallized grains can be regarded as uniform cylinders embedded in a three-dimensional matrix, the number of such colonies being constant. Thus during the early stages of recrystallization the volume fraction recrystallized, Xv, can be written as Xv=ynvlr2 [l] where y is a shape factor and i and r are defined as the average length and radius of a recrystallized colony and are spatial averages over the specimen. -nv, is the number of such colonies in a unit of volume. The American Smelting and Refining Co. has standardized its copper converting practice to attain a maximum unit blister production with a minimum of refractory consumption by careful location of the tuyeres and by applying magnetite coatings on the hard-burned magnesite brick linings. THE American Smelting and Refining Co. operates four primary copper smelters in the United States with a total of 17 Peirce-Smith type converters; 15 of them are 13 ft in diameter by 30 ft long, and two are smaller. Some details of operations vary with locale; however, fundamentals of design, operation, and maintenance are common to all plants. All converter shells are l-in. thick except for one new converter with riding rings on the ends which has a shell thickness of 1 1/2 in. More tuyeres can be installed with rings on the ends and hence more air can be used. Welded construction is replacing riveted. Minor shell repairs are made after each campaign. Principal causes of complete shell replacement are warpage and cracking resulting from localized over-heating. A 13x30 ft shell is being replaced after 34 years of operation and a total production of approximately 750,000 tons of blister. Converters are driven by 80 hp DC motors through company-designed worm gear reducers. Rotation is 0.38 rpm which permits the skimmer to spot the converter quite accurately for skimming slag. At three of the plants, protection against unscheduled air or power failures is afforded by the installation of emergency drives, consisting of auxiliary air motors or storage batteries. In order to avoid excessive splash out of the converters, the converter mouths are located as far back on the shells as existing flue facilities will permit. At one plant, the back of the mouth is only 13" to the rear of the vertical center line of the converter,. whereas it is 28" at another plant. Newly-lined mouth areas vary from 36 to 44 sq ft with effective operating areas about 25 pct less. It is important to keep the converter mouths as clean as possible. Dirty mouths create back pressures in the converters and as a consequence the tuyere air volumes are reduced. Mouths are generally cleaned by bumping with an empty ladle. Small mouth-cleaning rams have been used but unless extreme care is exercised the brickwork may be damaged. After considerable experimentation, the plants standardized tuyere elevations at 4 to 4% in. below horizontal center line at the shell with a downward pitch of about 13/16 in. per ft of length. Tuyeres are spaced at 6 in. centers except at the riding rings where there are no tuyeres. With this tuyere location, several of the plants now freeze magnetite slag in the bottoms, fronts, and backs up to the bottom of the tuyeres to control the internal shape of the converter. This has the effect of improving the agitation and mixing so that there is a marked increase in converting speed besides affording protection to the brick lining. Currently, the trend is to increase tuyere diameters from 1% to 2 in. to increase the air flow. At present, all converters are hand-punched but one converter is being equipped with a set of mechanical tuyere punchers. Rods for punching are % in. hexagonal smelter bar upset to ll/s in. and rods for cleaning tuyeres are upset to about 1% in., or larger, depending upon the tuyere diameter. Two of the plants use pneumatic reamers for cleaning the tuyeres between charges to minimize disturbing the coating on the inside of the refractory lining. Most of the puncher&apos;s platforms are pneumatically or hydraulically mounted so that a convenient punching position can be maintained regardless of tuyere position. For normal operations, tuyere air pressures vary from 15 to 13.5 psi, although some cycles such as magnetiting require pressures down to 8 psi. Air requirements vary from an average of 25,000 cfm on the newer installations down to 12,000 cfm on the older ones. THE Pilares mine of the Moctezuma Copper Co. is situated at Los Pilares de Nacozari, Sonora, Mexico, about 75 mi. (120.7 km.) South of the international boundary and about 7 mi. (11.26 kin.) east of the town of Nacozari de Garcia. It is situated at an elevation of 5000 ft. (1524 m.) in one of the northward trending ridges that form part of the mountain mass that culminates in the Sierra Madre de Mexico. To the east, south, and west, the topography is rugged and diversified; to the north less diversity exists, ranges of mountains rise sharply out of almost level ground and give the basin range structure characteristic of the southwest. The climate is dry, the average rainfall of 15 in. (38 cm.) being confined almost entirely to the months of June, July, and August. The

VARYING in thickness and in number from place to place, coal seams in the Canadian Rockies also range in pitch from nearly horizontal to vertical, sometimes with overturns. Over the entire coal-bearing area there are considerable differences of rank in coals of the same geological age, and there are marked differences in ash content and washability characteristics. Correlation of seams at mining operations within a few miles of each other has often proved impossible. These factors influence mining methods, and, of course, production results. The oldest coal formations of western Canada are of Lower Cretaceous age, as the carboniferous sediments are marine and contain no coal. Coal is also present in formations of Upper Cretaceous and Tertiary ages. The rank of coal varies from semianthracite in some operations in the Kootenay and Luscar formations of the Lower Cretaceous in the Rockies to lignite in the Tertiary fields of the Saskatchewan prairies. Fig. 1 shows the general extent of the formations.

ONE of the heaviest burdens uselessly cast by our mineral land laws upon the holder of the title conveyed by a patent from the United States is due to the provision excepting known veins from land patented as placer. In many instances the expense of defending such titles from the assaults of the owners of lode locations made upon the theory that the veins so located were known to exist at the date of the placer application for patent has exceeded many times the value of the land in question. Neither the lapse of time, however long after the issuance of the patent nor repeated adjudications by the courts serve to quiet such titles or to prevent them from being questioned. In the passage of laws providing for the acquisition of title to the mineral lands of the United States, Congress provided that the title to known veins should not pass from the United States by a patent based upon a placer location. As construed by the courts, the law (Sec. 2333 R.S.U.S.) provides that the applicant for a patent upon a placer claim may, if any vein of sufficient value to justify the expenditure of money in its development is known by him to exist within the boundaries thereof, include in his patent application an application for patent upon the vein as a lode claim; and failure to do so is to be deemed a conclusive declaration that the applicant makes no claim to the vein nor to an area of surface ground extending for 25 ft. (7.6 m.) on each side of its middle or center. As to such vein and, such area of enclosing surface ground under the circumstances stated, the title remains in, the United States notwithstanding the issuance of a patent that purports to convey the entire surface of a described area and everything beneath it, excepting only the segments of veins the apices of which lie outside of such area. Such known veins with such area of enclosing surface ground are, of course, at any time, so long as they remain unlocated, subject to location and appropriation in the same manner as other veins upon the public domain. The history of the operation of this law in one district will serve to illustrate its effect generally throughout the mining regions of the United States. John Dasher (Central Research Laboratory, Crucible Steel Co. of America, Pittsburgh. Pa.)— Getting spodumene to float quickly and cleanly can be a problem. The author has presented an excellent account of a valid and useful approach to the scale-up of such problem floats. This indicated advantages for doubling retention time, i.e., buying another set of flotation cells. The author states that 21 pct of the spodumene floated in 2 min in the laboratory cell, that the grade of the rougher was about 75 pct spodumene, and that the final tailing contained 4 to 12 pct spodumene in different sizes with the present cells and 1 to 9 pct spodumene with twice as many cells. About 20 years ago, this writer obtained in the laboratory the flotation of over 90 pct of this spodumene in a King&apos;s Mountain sample in 1 min at a grade of 90 pct spodumene in the rougher and a final tailing that contained only 1 pct spodumene. The methods of Norman, Ralston," and Gieseke&apos; were used, which teach that spodumene floats quickly and cleanly if its surfaces have been properly conditioned chemically and/or mechanically prior to flotation. Although feed preparation is not discussed, the results reported indicate that it is inadequate. This writer suggests that improvements in this area might be more effective than doubling the number of cells. W. E. Horst (author&apos;s reply)—Dasher&apos;s comments are appreciated by the author and require some clarification. He suggests that improved spodumene flotation performance may be obtained by feed preparation techniques rather than increased retention time in flotation. Certainly flotation performance is dependent on feed preparation and this is an important feature in the flotation process. It is true that certain types of spodumene ores, particularly weathered ores, require more complicated feed preparation processing than clean ores to achieve the desired flotation results. It was not implied that current feed preparation techniques are the same as experienced during the scale-up investigations. Although discussion of feed preparation was omitted from the article on scale-up relationships, the important feature was that pre-treatment processing was the same for each level of operation investigated— laboratory, pilot plant, and plant scale. Under these similar conditions large differences existed in recovery for comparable time intervals in each scale of operation. It is highly probable that feed preparation techniques could be modified and thereby increase the flotation rate for each scale or all scales of operation discussed. However, modifications would have to be justified on an economic basis.

Basic procedures in the mining industry have changed only slightly over the centuries since metals and fossil fuels became an essential part of man&apos;s economic and cultural life. Mining techniques of the 20th century bear a close resemblance to those of the ancients: exploration, ore breakage and removal, hoisting, and processing. The great advances, however, have been in equipment and machinery of greater size and speed which allow greater efficiency in each of these operations, with a corresponding reduction in manpower requirements. Yesteryear production was measured in pounds per man-day; today a giant and complex, but highly efficient, continuous mining machine can remove as much as eight tons of material a minute from the coal face. If our energy and metal demands of the future are to be met, and at this time it can be assumed that coal will continue to supply a significant part of the energy demand, other dramatic and spectacular technologic advances must be accomplished. Along with mechanization, however, public policy will require the industry to place greater emphasis on health and safety protection, as has been well demonstrated by recent actions of Congress. Together, fossil fuels and metals formed the basis for the industrial revolution-coal to develop power and metals to transform power into useful energy. Strangely enough, however, the mining industry the world over has lagged behind the continuous social changes brought on by the industrial revolution, such as preventive health and industrial hygiene services, and other programs directed to the well-being of the worker. In some countries this resistance, to change may have led in part to the nationalization of the coal industry. Whether this disinclination to social change in the industry of the United States reflects managerial attitudes, inept labor leadership, government neglect, or economic relationship would be the subject of an interesting study. Doubtless the mores of miners and their resistance to change, as well as their geographic isolation from other industrial groups, may have had a strong influence on these factors. In every major coal mining country the accident rate in the coal industry is substantially higher than other industrial groups, and the cost of pneumoconiosis compensation in some countries is greater than the combined costs for all other occupational diseases from all other industries. The high social cost of occupational accidents and diseases may have been a factor in the closing of the industry in at least two countries. Despite diminishing manpower needs, the industry is faced with critical manpower shortages. Miners once reared their sons to be miners; now it appears that the opposite is true.
