Centrally located with relation to the largest iron- and steel-producing districts of the United States, the fluorspar-deposits of Kentucky possess increasing interest and importance. As typical of the numerous fluorspar-mines of Kentucky and Illinois, I have selected for description the Memphis, because it and others of its immediate group exhibit the conditions characteristic of all. I. The Memphis MiNe. This mine lies 5 miles NW. of Marion, in Crittenden county, Kentucky, a station on the Chicago and Nashville division of .the Illinois Central R. R. For the first mile and a half out of Marion we see only Birdsville or Middle Chester sandstones of Mississippian age. Then we cross a fault of about 850 ft. displacement, and the Ste. Genevieve oolite sets in. Beyond the fault, oolite is the predominant rock, except that the hills to the north have a capping of Cypress or lowest Chester sandstone, 80 ft. below which is an outcrop of from 6 to 10 ft. of Ste. Genevieve (Rosiclare) sandstone. Occasional sink-holes are noticed, and as the mines are approached evidence of faulting is again seen. A line of .crude head-frames and open-cut dumps, extending for more than a quarter of a mile, marks the Klondike vein. The open-cuts are from 15 to 20 ft. deep, and in most of them, from the surface down, was found the reddish gravel which is really fluorspar—some of it white or purple and crystal-clear (if the red clay is washed off), and some carrying iron and silica, and stained by waters from the decaying limestone walls. In one of these cuts, at a depth of 20 ft., white and purplish honey-combed fluorspar was found, in which the larger cavities are due to the leaching of limestone and calcite, and the minute ones to the leaching of zinc-hlende.

DURING the course of the war the supply of tin in this country has steadily decreased and a continued effort has been made since the beginning of the emergency to use alloys that are either tin free or contain appreciably lower quantities of it. Even with the use of emergency materials, the tin supply has become particularly acute, and it is estimated that after recovery of the far eastern mines probably one to two years will be required before our normal annual supply is attained. One of the major tin-consuming fields is the bronze industry. Recommendations were made several years ago by the War Production Board toward the use of bronzes of lower tin content and manganese bronze and yellow brass for the customarily used tin-bronze alloys. The substitution of 88-5-5-2 copper-nickel-tin-zinc for composition G received considerable attention before the war, and consequently this alloy and modifications of it have been adopted for some current structural and pressure castings requiring high mechanical properties. Another of the commonly used bronzes is the 10 per cent tin, 10 per cent lead copper alloy for heavy-duty bearings. It has been known for some time that about 2.5 per cent nickel could be substituted for an equal amount of tin with retention of equivalent casting and tensile properties; however, it was desirable that a still greater conservation of tin be made. Consequently the present paper deals with the development of an alloy of low tin content that could be used for bearings. SELECTION OF COMPOSITION While the final criterion of the suitability of an alloy for a bearing must 0f course be determined by practical applications where all the ramifications of service conditions are encountered, certain short cuts in the initial selection of compositions are necessary to avoid an extensive and time-consuming investigation. The present program has been to match certain metallurgical properties of the 80-10-10 bronze that have been shown by previous investigations to be related to good bearing qualities. Such properties as microstructure, hardness, compressive yield strength, ductility, and castability have been considered, and certain simple wear tests have been made. Of the readily assessed characteristics desired in a good bearing alloy, one can be certain that a uniform distribution of lead is required in a leaded bronze. It has generally been found that segregation of lead is one of the chief difficulties with this type of material. Tin has a powerful effect on lead distribution, and with 10 per cent present produces a random distribution of chunky particles, such as are shown in Fig. I. The phase diagram of the Ta-Zr system is presented with a discussion of the methods used in its determination. The solidus contains a minimum at 1820°C near 25 wt pet Ta. A complete solid solution exists at elevated temperatures between tantalum and ß zirconium. This solid solution decomposes monotectoidally at 800°C and 12 wt pet Ta. The maximum solubility of tantalum in a zirconium is slightly less than 2 wt pet, and decreases with decreasing temperature. The solubility of zirconium in tantalum is 5 wt pet at the monotectoid temperature and about 2 wt pet at room temperature. THIS investigation was part of a program of research on refractory metal alloy systems having potential application in nuclear reactor technology. Preliminary prop-ess has been reported in the Ames Laboratory annual research reports.l Most of the previously reported work on the Ta-Zr alloy system consisted of partial phase diagram investigations and the determination of the mechanical properties of the zirconium-rich alloys. Anderson eta1.2 studied alloys containing up to 30 wt pet Ta as part of an investigation of several zirconium alloy systems. These investigators also determined some of the mechanical properties of the alloys at room temperature and 650°C. In a discussion of Anderson's work, Pfei13 suggested that the bright phase in the microstructures of the intermediate alloys is a tantalum-rich solid solution or an intermediate phase in a matrix of ß zirconium solid solution. Litton,4 Keeler,5 and Chubb6 determined the mechanical properties of zirconium-rich alloys at ambient and elevated temperatures. Van Thyne and McPherson7 reported the tensile properties

THE design of the Chuquicamata concentrator offered an unusual combination of problems, all of which had, in one way or another, a definite effect upon the final arrangement of all the equipment and necessary facilities. First of all, a remotely located project of this magnitude required careful selection of equipment with an adequate supply of replacement parts and in some cases necessitated stand-by spare equipment ready for immediate use. Fortunately, in the course of determining the proper flowsheet, in itself a prime factor in the concentrator design, it was possible to conduct numerous grinding and flotation tests at the Anaconda and Andes concentrators. As a result of these tests made under actual operating conditions, most of the major equipment best suited for treating the Chuquicamata ore efficiently was decided upon while preliminary design layouts were still being made. The design has been based primarily on the treatment of sulphide ore crushed to about 3/4 or 1 in. However, until the new sulphide crushing plant is completed it will be necessary to handle ore crushed to 3/8 in. in the existing oxide crushing plants and to some extent a mixed ore which has had its oxide copper content removed by leaching. This mixed ore, known as leached residue, will contain a certain amount of sulphuric acid from the leaching process which necessarily requires special protective measures. Several factors influenced the final location of the Concentrator. The only established fact known during preliminary design layout was the elevation of the dumping floor over the fine ore bin. This was predetermined by the desired level railroad grade across part of the existing tailing and leached residue dumps from the oxide plant to the bin. Next it was necessary that a site be chosen that would not require an excessively long haul from either the present oxide plant or the mine and in addition provide a fairly constant natural ground slope sufficiently wide to accommodate the length of the ultimate concentrator. The site as finally chosen to meet the foregoing restrictions provided a natural ground slope of 6 to 7 pct. This was excellent, especially in a region subject to earthquakes, as it assured that foundations of heavy equipment and footings for building and crane columns would rest on cut or undisturbed ground. However, this shallow slope, although having some definite advantages in the overall consideration of plant layout, resulted in the need for extensive studies in the general arrangement of equipment. The Minister of Geology of the Soviet Union P.Ya. Antropov, recently visited China and claims that this country occupies one of the foremost places in the world in reserves of tin, tungsten, molybdenum, antimony, iron ore, coal, and phosphates. Occurrences of economic value of chromite, nickel, gold, beryllium, tantalum, niobium, rare earths, and asbestos have also been reported. MINERAL RESOURCES Coal: The inferred reserves of coal are estimated at at 1,500 billion tons. A considerable part of the coal reserves is represented by coking coal, 80% of which is bituminous. Thicknesses of coal seams range up to 150 ft in the principal deposits located in northern and northeastern China. The total output of coal in 1958, 270 million tons, was produced by an army of 20 million people mainly in small mines operated by the agricultural communes. Kamioka Mine of Mitsui Mining & Smelting Co., Ltd. is the largest lead-zinc mine in Japan and is composed of two mines, Tochibora Mine and Mozumi Mine, which have daily production rates of 5,200 metric tons and 1,800 metric tons of crude ore respectively. In the mines, there are many massive pyro-metasomatic deposits which have been derived from the replacement of limestone. The deposits are composed of skarn minerals which mainly contain hedenberite. The country rock is generally hard and fine-grained gneiss. These deposits have been mined by means of the sublevel stoping method, induced block caving method and sublevel caving method at Tochibora Mine and mainly by the cut and fill method at Mozumi Mine. Since the 19601s, the trackless mining system has been introduced successfully into both mines, and is still promoted to be applied over wider areas. The underground hauling system is simplified remark- ably and much improved by adopting trackless ramps to the existing vertical and horizontal underground framework. Moreover, through the combination of the trackless mining system with the mining methods stated above, a notable increase in efficiency has been achieved. This is due to the high performance of the introduced machinery, reductions in man power of miscellaneous jobs, and also has enabled a highly efficient performance through its mobility. In addition, as it becomes possible to realize a flexible development to meet the irregularly shaped deposits and also becomes much easier to recover the remaining pillars by secondary mining, the extraction rate of ore has been improved considerably. With the introduction of the trackless mining system, the development method has been changed, thus former hand-hold leg-drills are now mostly re- placed by jumbo-type drills. Repair shops for Load-Haul-Dump machines also have been provided with an established service system. Reinforcement and rearrangement of the ventilation system has been carried out.

Introduction The stress field around a supported tunnel can be considered as being composed of: i) the virgin (pre-mining) stress in the rock ii) the (elastic) change in this stress field caused by creating the opening iii) the (time-dependent ) change in the stress field produced by (i) and (ii) as a section of the rock breaks up iv) the (time-dependent) influence of the stress build-up in the support. Several authors have examined the conditions necessary to produce static equilibrium between the support, the rock, and the regional (in-situ) stress field. The analysis used by Labasse (1) is typical. Consider a circular tunnel radius R in a hydrostatic stress field (P), and a radial pressure pi exerted by the support. For some years past the annual reviews of the metallurgy of lead have almost uniformly stated that there have been no great changes, such as there were being more particularly noticeable in the refinement of details. While this is quite true, nevertheless these changes in details are gradually bringing about a condition that, taken as a whole, constitutes a considerable advance in the art. Local circumstances have often compelled metallurgists to adopt certain peculiarities of practice which upon trial have been found advantageously applicable to more than the restricted district of origin. This paper will deal with some of the more novel features developed in recent years at the United States smelter, Midvale, Utah, particularly with reference to the influence of the bag house. The plant is equipped with six blast furnaces, 48 by 160 in., mechanically fed; four Wedge furnaces for roasting matte and sulphide ores; four Dwight-Lloyd sintering machines; 20 converter boxes for blast roasting; storage bins for ore, fuel, and fluxes; "oxide" and "sulphide" sampling mills; bag house taking all the gases of the plant; arsenic plant for treating the dust gathered there; laboratory, shops, etc. The most marked feature of the plant is its complete bag-house system. Of the many schemes thus far tried for preventing damage to surrounding agricultural interests the writer is aware of none as yet quite as efficient as the bag house. A common remark of visitors upon approaching the plant and viewing the clear stacks is that it appears to be shut down, whereas once inside all the evidences of industry are found. Bag-housing blast-furnace gases presents no peculiar difficulties. The gases from properly run furnaces are comparatively cool, contain scarcely a trace of acid and do not burn the filtering medium. All that is required is a proper mechanical design of the bag house and its accessories, the provision of ample filtering area, and of convenient means for handling and treating the product. While cotton or duck bags have been used, on the whole woolen bags woven of the raw wool appear to give sufficiently longer life to warrant their heavier expense. As for the filtering

IN attempting to describe recent mining developments at the Bunker Hill mine, it may be well to recall first the old days of hand mining when holes were laboriously drilled by hand to a maximum depth of three feet, and were shot one or two at a time, in order that the miner could take advantage of every slip, crack or bedding plane, and so save as much drilling as possible. Broken muck, of course, was loaded by hand shoveling into wheelbarrows or small cars, and heading advances or stope ton¬nages were governed by the number of men that could find room to work in any given place. The first big improvement over these old methods was the introduction of the reciprocating type of air-powered rock drill. This innovation, crude as it was, enabled the miners to set up a machine and drill a complete round of holes in one shift; but broken muck was still loaded by hand, and the size and rate of advance in headings were limited by time required to remove the broken rock. The next improvement of consequence was the appearance of the hammer-type rock drill, which greatly increased drilling speed over the reciprocating type, and made possible the completion of a full cycle in one shift, by the use of crossbars in headings, and permitted drilling and mucking to be carried on at the same time. Rock drills continued to improve as time passed, and finally the smaller and more efficient mucking machines appeared on the scene, and it became possible to muck out a round of broken rock and have a clean setup for one or more drill columns and machines. A complete cycle of mucking, drilling, and blasting was completed in one shift with an average advance of five feet. These conditions prevailed for several years, but as the mine grew deeper, the distances to transport the workers grew longer, and this fact together with the shortening of the working day, soon presented the problem of attempting to complete a cycle of operations in a shift of only six hours at the working faces. Anticipating this condition, the operating heads at the Bunker Hill had started an intensive study of more and better mechanization, and over a period of comparatively few years have adopted and placed in service methods and machines that make it possible for a three-man crew to consistently advance headings seven by nine feet in cross section, at the rate of eight feet, and more, per shift, doing all the mucking, switching, drilling and loading. These improvements consist of the following major items: I. The development of a light, flexible, easily transported jumbo equipped with pneumatic columns (Fig I), that has decreased the "setting up" and "tearing down" time an average of 1 1/2 hr per shift, or 25 pct of the available working time. These jumbos were developed at the Bunker Hill mine by members of the staff and consist of two pneumatic columns attached to a suitable carriage. They fold

THERE has been little investigation of the gold-germanium binary alloys. Haughton1 does not mention any work on the system. In a review article commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the discovery of germanium, E. Einecke2 mentioned a gold germanium eutectic at 24 atomic per cent Ge (10.4 weight per cent) melting at 359°C., but did not give the source of his information. From measurements of electrical conductivity, J. 0. Linde3 estimated that at least o.6 weight per cent germanium is soluble in gold. The recent availability of germanium in this country in commercial quantities has led to interest in its properties and its alloys. This study is part of a program of investigation on germanium alloys; work on ternary alloys involving germanium and gold will be reported later. In this investigation, the composition and melting point of the Au-Ge eutectic reported by Einecke has been found to be substantially correct. Eutectic composition has been placed at 12,0 per cent germanium, however. An alloy of 10.4 per cent Ge, Einecke's value, was found to have a few gold dendrites in it. The eutectic temperature has been determined as 356.0 ± 0.5°C., slightly less than the temperature of 359°C reported by Einecke. The liquidus curves and the solid solubility of germanium in gold have been determined, and are shown in Fig. I. MATERIALS AND ALLOYING The germanium used in this investigation was prepared by the Eagle-Picher Lead Co. from pure germanium oxide, by reduction in clay crucibles with sodium cyanide. The regulus is quite pure, assaying over 99.9 per cent Ge. High-purity gold obtained from Handy and Harmon was used. Alloying was carried out in graphite crucibles in an atmosphere of purified hydrogen. The temperature was brought up to 1050° to 1100°C., and the metal was allowed to freeze in the crucible. Prepared in this way, the gold dendrites in hypoeutectic alloys were somewhat segregated at the bottom and sides of the ingot, and on the hypereutectic side the lighter primary germanium tended to gather at the top. Most of the alloys were made from virgin metal. Low-germanium heats were made by alloying pure gold with the eutectic. Melting losses were consistently a few milligrams or less, and the composition could safely be taken from the intended analysis. The 30 per cent and 50 per cent germanium heats for thermal analysis were made in part from remelted higher germanium heats, and they may be off composition as much as one per cent. Because of the high cost of materials, the weight of heats for thermal analysis were 15 to 20 grams and heats for metallographic, X-ray, and hardness specimens were 2 to 4 grams.

PREVIOUS investigations on the effect of neutron irradiation on the superconducting properties of bulk transition metals indicated that little or no change occurred in poly crystalline disordered materials, particularly if cold-worked prior to irradiation. Only the superconducting properties of ordered intermetal-lic A15 compounds were found to be sensitive to irradiation, and the observed reduction in Tc and increased magnetic hysteresis or critical current densities were attributed to the introduction of flux pinning vacancy clusters and disorder in the lattice. Since the former would also be expected to be present after irradiation in disordered alloys, the general conclusion was that the disordering effect of the irradiation was the primary reason for the changes observed. The present note reports some unusual effects of neutron irradiation on cold worked Nb(Cb)-Ti-V alloys. Specimens with nominal composition as given in Table I were prepared by repeated arc melting, taking the usual precautions, and homogenized at 1000°C for 24 hr prior to a reduction of 15:l by cold rolling. Samples of size 1 by 1 by 25 mm were sliced from the rolled strips. The sarmples chosen for irradiating were sealed in a cadmium tube (wall thickness 1 mm) prior to exposure in a fast neutron flux of 3.7 x 1019 neutrons per sq cm in the swimming pool reactor of Union Carbide Corporation&apos;s Sterling Forest Reactor. During irradiation the temperature of the samples was maintained below 70°C. The irradiated samples were stored at room temperature for approximately 1 year allowing the radiation levels to reach a safe handling value. Tc measurements were made employing a self-inductance coil technique. Jc data at 4.2"Kwere obtained using a four lead resistivity method. The latter measurements were made at the Francis Bitter National Magnet Laboratory by setting the perpendicularly applied field and increasing the direct current through the sample until a potential of about 10-6 v was detected. Tc values for the nonirradiated samples are listed in Table I together with the change in Tc after irradiation. A decrease in Tc of 0.25 or 0.3"K was measured for three of the four samples, the exception being the Nb-30 at. pct V-20 at. pct Ti alloy which showed a decrease of 0.5K. Jc vs applied field data are plotted in Fig. 1 for the Nb-20 at. pct V-30 at. pct Ti alloy. These curves are typical of the four alloys and surprisingly indicate that a degradation occurred in all the samples after irradiation. Hc2 values, obtained by extrapolation to zero current, are 8 to 15 pct lower than those measured for the nonirradiated specimens. The reasons for the degradation of Tc and jc ob-served in the alloys on exposure to neutron irradiation are not immediately apparent. The temperature at which the samples were maintained during bombardment (<70°C) and stored (20°C) make it highly unlikely that any significant change in the dislocation density of the materials through thermally activated migration and annihilation would occur. The explanation must lie in the type of damage produced by the bombardment. McEvoy et a1. reported no change in superconduct-

New Mexico retained its position in 1938 as the sixth largest oil-producing state, with a total production of 35,510,176 bbl. This was 2,875,598 bbl. less than the 1937 production of 38,485,774 bbl., or a decrease of 0.077 per cent, which was caused by the lack of pipe-line facilities and storage at the pipe-line terminals. The production for Lea County (excluding Maljamar) was 32,926,788 bbl.; for Eddy County (including Maljamar) was 2,225,411 bbl.; and for northwestern New Mexico (San Juan and McKinley Counties), 357,977 bbl. The average daily nonmarginal well allowable for Lea County on Jan. 1, 1938, was 65 bbl. At the close of the year it was 49 bbl. The average daily pipe-line runs for domestic consumption were less than the state allowables recommended by the United States Bureau of Mines. There was a demand for Artesia crude for foreign export, which if included in the daily production for New Mexico would be slightly in excess of the daily production recommended for New Mexico by the Bureau of Mines. The daily average production for the year was 97,329 barrels. There were 622 completions in the state, of which 520 were oil wells; 16 hydrocarbon gas wells; 5 carbon dioxide gas wells, and 81 dry holes. Of the dry holes 38 were in or near-by proven fields and the remainder, 43, were wildcats. Five new fields were discovered in New Mexico during 1938, three in Lea County and two in Eddy County. Southeastern New Mexico Lea County.—The Monumcnt field was the largest producing field in Lea County, with 9,440,334 bbl., and was closely followed by the Eunice field with 8,872,335 bbl. The Hobbs field was third with 5,010,414 bbl. The greatest activity in Lea County was in the Vacuum pool, with 129 completions, of which 126 were oil wells and three were dry holes. The Texas Company completed its Corbin NO. 1 in the KW 1/4 SW1/4 sec. 10, T. 18 S., R. 33 E. in August. This well was drilled to a depth of 5118 ft. in a white sand, encountering salt water. It was plugged back to 4315 ft, and pumped 43 bbl. of 36" gravity oil in 12 hr. It was approximately 6 miles southwest of the closest production in the Vacuum

The general drift of the discussion as to the relative merits of pressure- and exhaust-fans has resulted, if we may judge from the prevailing practice, largely in favor of the latter. The subject has been hitherto treated, however, with special reference to highly gaseous mines, the effect of the form of ventilation upon dust-explosions having been too little considered. Even in mines containing practically no gas, dust-explosions may occur; and if, as I believe, pressure-fans are to be preferred for their effect upon dust, it may be worth while to reopen the debate, and to challenge the advisability of exhaust-ventilation under certain conditions. There are several forms of colliery-ventilation, which may be described as follows: Plain or simple pressure-ventilation, in which the fan acts as a pressure-fan, and the movement of coal is unobstructed at the surface by doors or equivalent devices in drifts or shafts, the traveling and haulage. thus being in the return-current. Plain exhaust-ventilation, in which the fan acts as an exhaust-fan, the movement of coal being likewise unobstructed at the surface, and the traveling and haulage being in the intake.

Because of increased pressure from federal and state regulatory agencies, most acid flows will require some sort of treatment prior to being discharged to receiving streams. In many industries, the volumes of liquors are large and their acid content varied. Development of a waste treatment process minimizing equipment cost and utilizing land efficiently is mandatory. Methods of acid neutralization with lime have been known for years, however, the volume and characteristics of the resultant precipitated solids can create a disposal problem. Also, when standard lime treatment is used, the settling characteristic of the precipitated solids is normally slow. In some instances, the necessity of added dissolved solids removal, such as iron, needing aeration, add to the problem of concentrating neutralized solids.
