ROOM and pillar coal mining methods employed in the United States keep the roof at original height by leaving untouched pillars of coal in the face area. But, German coal mines of the Ruhr district are exclusively operated on the longwall system. With this method the whole length of the coal face advances and the roof in the face area sinks 10 to 15 pct of seam thickness. Behind the face the roof may drop 50 to 80 pct of seam thickness due to the high rock pressures encountered at average mining depth of 2250 ft. Mining depth is increasing 20 to 30 ft per year.

Preparing the Metals.—Ordinary silver wire was hard-drawn to No. 23 Brown and Sharp gauge; it was cut in two, and one piece was carefully annealed in the ordinary way. The wire was prepared by Messrs. Guild and Delano, jewelers, Boston. The Ansonia Brass and Copper Co., Ansonia, Conn., kindly furnished me with some hard-drawn copper wire No. 31, A. W. G., and some of the same wire after annealing in the ordinary way.

Up to the present time, according to Hansenl and Haughton,² the constitution of the bismuth-indium system has not yet been published. The generally accepted value for the melting point of indium, as listed in most scientific journals and textbooks, is 155°C. Recently, however, H. M. Davis3 has determined a new melting point for indium of 157.3²C O.l°C. Since bismuth has been used in preponderance as an alloying element in the majority of low-melting alloys, and indium has been used with considerable success in lowering the melting points of low-melting alloys, 4,6 an interest has been developed in the application of these two metals, making a complete knowledge of the constitution of its alloys desirable. In this investigation, the melting point of indium reported by H. M. Davis has been found to be substantially correct. A value of 157. ²°C ± O.5°C was determined. The two eutectic compositions have been placed at 34 and 50 pct bismuth with their respective eutectic temperatures as 72.4°C ± 0.5°C and 90°C ± 0.5°C. The bismuth-indium phase diagram has been determined by thermal and microscopic analysis and is shown in Fig I. Thermal Analysis Granulated bismuth and indium shot, having a guaranteed purity of 99.99 and 99.95 pct, respectively, were melted in a carbon crucible by means of a laboratory heater. To minimize oxidation of the alloys, a heavy mineral oil (Nujol) having a high- flash point was used. A platinum-platinum rhodium thermocouple of fine wire encased in a thin-walled Pyrex glass tube, about 1/8 in. in diameter, was connected to a type K potentiometer for temperature measurements. The thermocouple was calibrated against the melting points of tin, bismuth, and the silver-copper eutectic and the boiling point of water. Since the temperature readings could be reproduced to 0.²°Cl and the accuracy of the temperature standards in this range is slightly better than 0.5°C, it scems reasonable to assume that the temperature readings are reliable to approximately 0.5°C. The cooling rate could be controlled by varying the amount of insulation surrounding the crucible. Three or four layers of asbestos paper, 1/16 in. thick, sufficed to give a cooling rate of from I° to ²°C per minute. Undercooling was slightly noticeable. This condition was minimized by vigorous stirring, since the advantage of using slower rates was too small to justify the greater expenditure

In order to hoist the ore according to grades, stope samples are taken. Three equidistant grooves are picked across the breast at right angles to the dip of the ore, the part removed being caught in the hand and then put into a small bag. When there is broken ore in the breast, the lines are continued down the pile and a small amount taken at intervals of the length of the sampler's pick handle. The quantity of sample from each breast will be between 2 and 3 Ib. If there are two grades of ore, bessemer and non-bessemer, there are two sets of brass checks for each chute, each check stamped with the number of the chute; one set of checks has the word "bessemer" and the other "non-bessemer." Before any ore is removed from the chutes, it is the duty of one man to see that the proper set of checks is at each chute in the mine. As each motor car is loaded, a check is attached to it. When the train reaches the shaft, the sample man removes the check on the first car, notes the grade, and directs the motorman to spot it over the proper pocket. The check is then hung on a hook with the number corresponding to the chute from which the ore came. The sample man throws a short rope with a knot in the end over the car and at the point where the knot falls a standard scoopful is taken. This is placed in a large bag that hangs directly under the hook containing the checks for that particular chute. These chute samples represent a check on the grading of the various contracts and by counting the tags a check is obtained on the miner's tally of the ore going into each chute; the total of the checks represents the hoist. During the stocking season, a standard scoopful is taken from each top tram car. This sample is taken in the same way as the chute samples at the plats underground. Top-of-car Samples These samples are taken by using a rope, preferably a clothesline, knotted each 18 in. of its length, and a hammer and a scoop. The standard scoop measures 31/2 by 21/4 by 11/4 in. and holds about 1/2 Ib. of ore. The rope, as applied to the usual railroad cars at the mine, is knotted into fifteen sections. THE big mass of anorthosite in the Lake Sanford district and the bodies of titaniferous magnetite that occur in a small area near the south margin of the mass have been described repeatedly, and the puzzling problems of the genesis of the rocks and ores have stimulated the deductive reasoning of geologists for a hundred years. Some of these men have taken a leading part1-15 in describing the anorthosite rock and forming hypotheses concerning its origin; some have contributed most to the study of the ore deposits;'"= and some have made classical Studies3,4,21-27 introducing a basic approach to the problems of the anorthosite rock and genesis of the titaniferous magnetites. Much of the writing on the problems of rock and ore genesis has been based on physical-chemical reasoning rather than on field and microscope observations of the rocks and ores. Most of these geologists conclude that the anorthosite was formed by true magmatic crystallization, involving previous settling or squeezing out of ferromagnesian minerals from the parent magma. The associated gabbro is a separate segregation or later intrusion, and the lighter colored and finer grained facies of the anorthosite is either a chilled border zone of the anorthosite or the result of granulation by crushing of the coarse, dark blue rock of the main mass. This blue rock, called the Marcy type, is named after the higest peak in the range. The finer grained and lighter colored rock is called the White-face, after another mountain appropriately named for a cliff colored by this facies of the anorthosite. In explaining the genesis of the ores the authors have reached no general agreement, but all consider them to be dominantly the result of magmatic processes rather than the result of replacement by pneu-matolytic or hydrothermal processes. However, in the conclusions of two authors, Osborne27 and Ste-phenson," the reader is told positively that the ore minerals were introduced after the wall rock was solid and also that the oxides are later than the silicates. This seems to mean that the ore came in as a later intrusion, like a dike, since Osborne speaks of filter pressing and later injection of a residual magma. Stephenson agrees in general with Osborne but disagrees with his conclusion that ore does not grade into country rock. Singewald22 calls in "mineralizers" to participate in magmatic deposition. Stephenson ends his paper with a statement that replacement was the dominant process for the introduction of ore with anorthosite. Hence both Singewald and Stephenson call on pneumato-lytic or hydrothermal processes to supplement magmatic crystallization from a silicate melt, but they cannot quite bring themselves to state that the orebodies formed in that way. In their conclusions the ores are still magmatic segregations and magmatic injections and—almost as an afterthought— "replacements." According to Bateman18 there was a gravitational accumulation process of the iron silicates and oxides, which were injected later. Rambere explains the ores entirely on physical-chemical theory, as does Evrard.17 Buddington and associates,10 in a paper presented to the Geological Society of America in 1953, believe the facts observed prove that the magnetite-ilmenite formed at magmatic temperatures. The present writer's conclusions, given here, were first presented in 1947 in Industrial Minerals and Rocks.= Since the papers of Ramberg, Bateman, and Buddington, published after 1947, gave no recognition to those conclusions that differ from their own, the writer has taken an opportunity to restudy the area in the field, and to examine a number of microscopic sections, and now presents the evidence more thoroughly than he had an opportunity to do in the

During the last 20 years, experimenters have sought to utilize pulverized coal in boiler plants, but refractory and slag troubles have usually overbalanced any gains in efficiency that were obtained. These troubles were caused largely by lack of knowledge of the proper methods of coal preparation and lack of a furnace design that would be adaptable to pulverized-coal firing. When this information was obtained the results were so much more satisfactory that within the last 5 years approximately 80,000 boiler hp. have been installed in plants ranging from 1000 to 20,000 boiler hp. rated capacity, which are operating at an average of 174 per cent. of rating. The first commercial installation for burning pulverized coal under boilers was made at the Parsons shops of the M. K. & T. railroad in 1916. Of eight 250-hp. water-tube boilers thus fitted, six were operated continuously for 3 yr., when oil was obtained at such a low price as to warrant its use. Since then, this plant has been operating alternately on pulverized coal and oil, depending on prevailing prices. Recently gas has been discovered within 20 mi. of this plant, so that this fuel may also be used. No change in furnace design was made when changing from pulverized coal to oil or gas firing. One of the principal advantages of this method of firing is its ability to utilize, with maximum efficiency, all kinds of coal, irrespective of quality or physical characteristics. In fact, quite a number of the present pulverized-coal installations were made for the purpose of utilizing coal that could not be marketed or used in any other way. The Pacific Coast Coal Co., at Black Diamond, Wash., formerly hand fired the boilers, using approximately 125 tons of prepared steam-size coal daily. The Black Diamond steam coal is the best quality of coal for steaming purposes mined in that section of the country, and there is a market for all that can be produced. By installing a pulverizing plant, it was possible to substitute coal of a size and quality that had no commercial value, so that 125 tons daily of the best steam coal formerly used at the mines is now marketed. Drilling an oil well or most other types of drilling or coring is no longer a simple and uncomplicated operation. Drilling today at depths which exceed 9144 m (30,000 ft) is hazardous and requires personnel with long and varied experience in drilling. It also requires extensive experience and knowledge in the use of materials which are added to the drilling fluid or "mud," more often than not materials utilizing an industrial mineral. The drilling fluid can vary from a simple mixture of water and "mud" to a very sophisticated, scientifically compounded drilling fluid. Industrial Minerals Used in Drilling Fluids Industrial minerals which are commonly used in oilwell drilling and completion are listed in Table 1. The most important minerals, determined by sales, are bentonite and barite. The other minerals listed are either used to achieve a specific purpose or are used regularly but in limited quantities. The main suppliers of drilling fluids internationally are Magcobar Div., Dresser Industries, Inc.; Baroid Div., National Lead Co.; IMC Drilling Mud Co., (a subsidiary of international Minerals and Chemicals Corp. and Halliburton Co.); and Milchem, a division of Baker Industries. Most of the industrial minerals are found in North America, with barite mines and processing plants located in Nevada, Arkansas, Missouri, and Arizona, and bentonite mines near Graybull, WY. Other mines, such as those in Nova Scotia, are capable of shipping to South America and to the European and Middle East countries. Most of the materials processed by any of the suppliers must conform to specifications set by the American Petroleum Institute (API) or the Oil Companies Material Organization (OCMA). These specifications provide for uniform physical and chemical properties of the materials to be sold on the open market. Function of Drilling Fluids In the early days of rotary drilling, the primary function of drilling fluids was to bring the cuttings from the bottom of the hole to the surface. Today it is recognized the drilling fluid has at least ten important functions: 1) To remove the cuttings from the bottom of the hole and carry them to the surface. 2) To cool and lubricate the drill string and drill bit. 3) To build an impermeable cake on the wall of the hole. 4) To control subsurface pressures. 5) To hold cuttings and weight material in suspension when circulation is interrupted. 6) To release sand and cuttings at the surface. 7) To support part of the weight of drill pipe and casing. 8) To reduce to a minimum any adverse effects upon the formation adjacent to the hole. 9) To insure maximum information about the formation penetrated. 10) To transmit hydraulic horsepower to the bit. In order to accomplish some or all of these functions while penetrating formations of various characteristics, several types of drilling fluids systems have been designed. In the central Ohio area well completions and new production each increased 60 per cent. in 1928 over the previous year. Gas wells increased only 27 per cent. The ratio of dry holes to total completions was unchanged. Ashland County led with 113 completions; a new pool in the shallow Berea sand near Jeromesville stimulated activity. Licking County in the Clinton deep sand territory, however, lead in new production with 972 bbl. Two other deep sand counties followed closely, Coshocton with 831 bbl., and Muskingum with 718 barrels. The Trenton rock or Lima field of northwestern Ohio declined sharply in oil well completions to 130 for 1928 from 210 for the previous year. New production increased from 3000 to 6100 bbl., the increase coming from the Murphy pool in Liberty township, Seneca County. The total of gas wells was unchanged as compared with 1927. The ratio of dry holes to total completions rose from 13 per cent. in 1927 to 27 per cent, in 1928. The largest producer in the Murphy pool made 1200 bbl, in the first 24 hr. The total depth of the wells in this pool averages 1475 ft.; average initial production, 125 barrels.

Recent developments related to petroleum engineering discussed in this paper are: 1. Drilling wells in with oil or the use of chemical compounds or (Imud solvents" for removing rotary mud from wells in order to increase or make possible oil production. 2. Comparison of results of electrical logging methods in locating water, as shown in a recent test on a well in the Los Angeles Basin. 3. A new method for logging formations through casing, known as the Stratagraph. Drilling Wells in with Oil or the Use of Chemical Compounds or Mud Solvents During the time that the California fields showed high gas pressures, the pressure of the gas within the formation was sufficiently great to break down the mud wall or cake formed while the well was drilling. That this did not always occur was demonstrated by the fact that in some of the older fields new wells sometimes had substantially higher initial productions than other wells near by. The explanation seemed to be that some sands were mudded off in the original drilling. Their pressure was then not great enough to break down the mud wall in competition with the higher pressure of the sands, but the situation reversed itself so that a later well benefited by the pressure in these originally weaker sands. As time passed, in wells deeper than 5000 ft. the difficulty of bringing wells on production became more pronounced. This led to a hunt for substitutes, of which a number have been tried. The one that has proved most successful in our experience at Ventura is known as the Nobs solvent. At well No. 1 of the Associated-Ventura Land & Water Co. when it was recompleted in February 1936, about 10 days were spent in trying to bring the well in in the regular manner, but only about 113 bbl. of water could be swabbed from the well, and even this quantity decreased as time passed. The Nobs solvent was spotted in the bottom of the hole opposite the perforations, inverted Guiberson swab rubbers were used on the drillpipe and the hole was down-swabbed in stages, beginning

THE increasing use of aluminum and its alloys in commercial fields has demanded a better understanding of their machining properties. This fact is exemplified by problems that have arisen in the automotive and airplane industries, but many in other fields might be cited. As pure aluminum and its alloys in their various commercial conditions show appreciable differences in their machining properties, it is not surprising that quite divergent solutions have been offered for the machining problems encountered. However, if the fundamental requirements of the most suitable cutting tools for these metals are understood, these machining problems lend themselves more readily to satisfactory solutions. Since the machining of free cutting brass and mild steel is understood by most persons accustomed to working these metals, it may serve our purpose better to first make a general comparison of the tools more commonly used in machining these metals with the tools most suitable for machining aluminum, then proceed to a more specific discussion of the individual stools.

The primary purpose of the Institute is to advance the technologic and engineering arts embraced by it through inter- change of knowledge. This can best be done by the presentation and discussion of technical papers by its members. Short practical papers are especially welcome. An author should always satisfy himself that his material is of a quality that will be a credit to him and to the Institute. The preparation of a good paper frequently leads to a reorientation of the author's thoughts, and publication contributes much to the professional standing of the author. Members are urged to submit papers presenting the results of their work. Attention to the following suggestions will greatly further the prompt and efficient handling of manuscripts.

The reaction COSO4(c)?CoO(c) + So3(g)was investigated from 950° to 1170OK by two different methods. The sulfate was decomposed in a previously evacuated space and Pso3 calculated from the measured total pressure on the assumption that Pso2 = 2P02. The sulfate was also decomposed under conditions of controlled oxygen pressure. The difference in the results obtained by these experimental techniques is attributed to the effects of thermal diffusion. The standard free energy change for the reaction is given by ?F° = 66,292 + 17.273T log T — 102.57 T (±300 cal/mole). It was found by DTA and X-ray diffraction studies that CoS04 undergoes a transformation at 617°± 4°C. THE metal sulfates may decompose directly to the oxide or pass through one or more intermediate basic sulfates. Provided the oxidation state of the cation does not change in the course of the reaction, the decompositions may be described in general as follows: One of the major objectives of this work was to determine the validity of Eq. [3] as much of the existing sulfate data has been calculated from decomposition pressures by Eq. [5]. The type of apparatus generally used for these measurements consists of a reaction vessel at high temperature which communicates with a manometer at room temperature. A temperature gradient is thus imposed on the gas phase causing thermal diffusion which brings about a partial separation of the different gaseous species present in an initially uniform mixture. The basic theory and experimental facts associated with this phenomenon are summarized elsewhere1 and it will suffice to state here that the heavier gaseous species diffuses down the temperature gradient. Since thermal diffusion destroys the homogeneity of the gas phase, it is not necessarily true that Pso2 = 2Po2 in any particular volume element of the gas phase even though there are twice as many molecules of SO, as of 0, in the gas phase considered as a whole. Under these conditions, the decomposing sulfate gives off SO, which dissociates to SO, and 0, and all three species are distributed throughout the system by thermal diffusion. However, the sulfate will continue to dissociate until the equilibrium value of PSo3 is established on the hot zone. Thermal diffusion may distribute SO2 and O2 throughout the gas phase in any way so long as Eq. [2b] is satisfied in the hot zone; i.e. Pso2(Po2)1/2=K3pso3. Preliminary estimates indicate that world consumption of petroleum products and related fuels in 1937 shattered previous records with a figure of 1,920,000,000 bbl.; that is, 124,000,000 bbl. more than the 1936 total. The writers, as in previous years, have been unable to account for all the available supply in 1937. This "unaccounted-for" supply, which formerly was thought to go largely into storage in foreign countries, was close to 53,000,000 bbl. in 1933; 93,000,000 in 1934; 111,000,000 in 1935; 75,000,000 in 1936 and 148,000,000 in 1937. As this discrepancy between supply and demand continued year after year, it became evident that other reasons than additional foreign stocks were responsible for it. It can now be stated that the "unaccounted-for" supply (see Table 1) goes to take care of: (1) consumption of petroleum products and related fuels for military purposes, the figures of which have been and are kept confidential by foreign countries, (2) additions to stocks to be consumed for military and nonmilitary purposes in foreign countries on which likewise no information is available, (3) errors incurred in the conversion of figures of production of crude oil, its products and related fuels from "weight" units, as used in Russia, for instance, to their American or "volume" equivalents and vice versa, and (4) to the lack of reliable statistics on production and consumption, particularly from Russia, the

In some experimental work conducted several years ago, it was noted that sulphur seemed to have a distinct influence on grain size of carbon steels. 111 order to check this observation, a series of S..A.E. 1040 steels was made with the normal composition held as nearly constant as possible. The steels were made with three sulphur levels, which were 0.012, 0.024 and 0.038 per cent sulphur, respectively. For each of the sulphur levels, steels were made with only silicon deoxidization and with aluminum additions of 0.1015, 0.025, 0.050 and 0.10 per cent. The melting medium was an acid-lined high-frequency induction furnace. These steels were forged and rolled and differentiall!. quenched from temperaturcs in the range of 1500O to 1800°F. After this, the A.S.T.M. grain size was determined and plotted as in Fig. I. It will be noted, first of all, that the aluminum-free steels had filler grain size with higher sulphur when heated to 1500, but that this condition was reversed at 1700°. When aluminum was added to produce fine grain size, the steels in the lowest sulphur level were fine-grained only to 1600°. and then only with an addition of one pound of aluminum per ton. The medium sulphur steels werc fine-grained to 1600' with a wider range of aluminum addition. The steels in the highest sulphur level were fine-grained at 1600° over a still wider range of aluminum additions and fine- grained at 1700° with an addition of one pound per ton. Fig. 2 shows curves of the grain-coarsening temperature for these steels and illustrates how sulphur and aluminum combine to give greater inhibition to grain growth than aluminum alone. Only the highest sulphur steels have a grain-coarsening temperaturc above 1700°.. At 1650°, the low sulphur steel is fine-grained only at its peak, while the highest sulphur steel is fine-grained over a wide range. In these tests, one pound of aluminum per ton gave the best results; this is equivalent to about 1 1/2 lb. per ton for commercial condition. IllcQuaid-Ehn tests made on these steels showed the same trend but to a lesser degree. The tests were repeated on a series of S.A.E:. 1015 steels with sulphur levels of 0.02 and 0.03j per cent. Aluminum additions were made in the range from 0.025 to 0.15 per cent. These steels were forged and rolled, normalized at 2000°F. to put them all in the same starting condition, then reheated to various temperatures from 1600" to 1800" and cooled at rates that would allow ferrite precipitation in the austenitic grain boundaries. The results of these tests arc shown in Fig. 3. It will be noted that. up to the temperature of 1650°, there is very little difference in the grain size obtained from the two levels of sulphur. .At temperatures of 1700° and 1750°, however, the lower sulphur steel was fine-grained only with an aluminum addition of 1 1/2 lb, per ton;

THE development of the modern blast furnace began more than one hundred years ago, with the abandonment of the small hillside furnaces. Its development, especially during the past 50 years, has been accomplished through a rapid succession of enlargements and improvements. The remarkable growth in furnace output during this period is a tribute to the engineers and operators who have constantly endeavored to build larger and more efficient blast furnaces. The blast-furnace operators and their mechanical and electrical maintenance staffs have originated most of the furnace improvements as a result of their practical operating experience. FURNACE LINES About 50 years ago furnaces consisted of hearths about 11 ft. in diameter, which merged into rather high flat boshes, with no cylindrical section between the bosh and inwall and no cylindrical section at the stock line. Since then the lines of the furnace invariably have included a cylindrical section above the bosh and a cylindrical section at the stock line. Notable increases have been made in both hearth diameters and furnace heights. During the past 10 years hearth diameters in new and replaced furnace stacks have rather consistently fallen within the range of 25 to 28 ft. while their heights have varied between 100 and 106 ft. The lines of most large furnaces using Mesabi ores have followed a fairly uniform pattern (Fig. I) in which the principal dimensions for 25-ft. hearth furnaces are as follows: [Hearth diameter 25 ft. o in. Height of bosh 10 ft. o in. Bosh angle 8 1 ½° Diameter top of bosh 28 ft. o in. Inwall batter per foot 15/16 Stock-line diameter 19 ft. 6 in. Large-bell diameter 14 ft. 6 in. Height from iron notch to top ring casting 100 ft. o in.] In determining the size of a new furnace for the replacement of an existing stack or for an addition to productive capacity, it is not possible to formulate a procedure that can always be followed. Local conditions, requirements as to capacity, available raw materials and prospects for future expansion dictate the size of such proposed improvements or additions. However, where the immediate requirements indicate a stack or furnace of a certain productive capacity, and the future prospects indicate that more capacity can be utilized, it is well to consider building the furnace for the ultimate capacity rather than to install a smaller hearth with provision for future enlargement. The decision to build the larger hearth and stack for the ultimate capacity probably will require no greater initial investment, since the saving in the cost of brickwork will about offset the greater cost of the hearth jacket, tuyere breast and bosh bands. In the meantime, the furnace of larger hearth dimensions, while operating below its ultimate output, will yield a better coke rate and

Experimentation which measures differences in pressure across the interfaces of immiscible fluids in the interstitial spaces of porous media may be termed "capillary pressure experimentation". In the literature of petroleum technology since 1941 there have appeared twelve papers popularizing capillary pressure concepts and developing applications of these concepts for the solution of problems of practical reservoir engineering importance, such as the determination of connate water, fluid distribution. in transition zones, reservoir rock textural properties, and oil recovery from petroleum reservoirs. Although a review of the literature would be justified at this time in order to reconcile the conflicting viewpoints which are contained in the cited papers, the object of this note will be of more limited scope. It is believed that the recent paper of Muskat alls sufficient attention to many of the uncertainties which arise upon examination of the published literature. such that until satisfactory counter-proposals can be made it will serve our purpose only to mention some other like uncertainties. This will emphasize further the need confronting petroleum technologists to re. consider and reformulate the application possibilities of capillary pressure experimentation. In particular, I sug- gest that we examine the thesis that capillary pressure experimentation as above defined can lead to measurements reflecting the recovery of oil from petroleum reservoirs, as was proposed first" by Amyx and Yuster and was first reduced to practice by the experimentation of Welge . In fact. I shall deal exclusively with the Welge papers since it is the principle one on this subject which has appeared to date. I shall attempt to show that the possibility of describing oil recovery features in terms of capillary pressure phenomena has not been established entirely. The Welge paper was a pioneering effort to evaluate this recovery application possibility. P. P. Reichertz' comments on the Welge paper state that non-wetting phase discontinuities are developed occasionally in the Welge experiment, and restate Muskat's argument that discontinuous fluid elements (partially saturating the interstices of porous media which are elsewhere saturated with some other immiscible phase or phases) are not subject to the requirements of hydrostatic equilibrium. It is the purpose of my comment to show that it is unnecessary to make Reichertz' postulation regarding non-wetting phase discontinuities (however valid) when it is desired to criticize Welge's theoretical treatment of his problem. It can be shown that Welge's method of measuring values for ''capillary pressure" is invalid in many instances of application, such that his reported curves of capillary pressure Versus fluid saturation often have no physical meaning, even throughout the interval of fluid saturation where it might be otherwise suspected that no phase discontinuities occur. By considering established principles of capillary pressure experimentation it can be shown that the pressure difference experimentally observed between wetting and non-wetting fluid phases which are contained in external reservoirs will reflect on the capillary pressure difference at the interfaces of contact between these phases only when the following conditions are satisfied: (a) There shall be a balance between the opposing forces of gravity and capillarity, as obtains under conditions of hydrostatic equilibrium when the positions of the interfaces of contact become fixed in pore spaces of certain geometry (b) The wetting and non-wetting fluids within the interstitial spaces shall everywhere be continuous with the external wetting phase reservoir and the external non-wetting phase reservoir, respectively. It will become apparent immediately that in any instance when a greater pressure is recorded in the external wetting phase reservoir than in the external non-wetting phase reservoir, one may establish either that static equilibrium has not been attained or that discontinuities in one or more of the fluids have been developed. This is because the pressure otherwiee is always gereatest in the non-wetting phase at each static interstitial interface of contact with the wetting phase. such that the externally measured pressure in the non-wetting phase likewise must be greatest if the above conditions are to be satisfied.

The purpose of this paper is to direct attention to the lower part of the austenite transformation diagram, or TTT curves, where considerable uncertainty still exists as to the blending of the bainite and martensite reactions. The dissimilarities between these two low temperature transforrnations have been summarized recently by Troiano and Greninger.' Of particular importance to the present work is the fact that martensite formation, unlike bainite formation, is not suppressed by the fastest quenching rates attainable. However, most of the investigations in this direction have been concerned primarily with the start of the martensite transformation (Mg) during cooling, rather than with the quantitative aspects of the subsequent reaction on either further cooling or isothermal holding. Several years ago, Cohen2 suggested a form of transformation diagram which reconciled, at least schematically, the isothermal characteristics of the bainite transformation with the insuppressible nature of the martensite transformation. In essence, the diagram consisted of a family of horizontal lines (representing the progress of the austenite-martensite reaction during quenching) which were interrupted in point of time by the bainite family of C-curves extending down from higher temperatures. This picture received later support by metal-lographic3 and dilatometric4,5 studies, but the techniques employed were not sufficiently critical to substantiate some of the details. Elmendorf6 and Grange and Stewardi have shown that the Greninger-Troiano metallographic technique8 may be used not only for M, determinations, but for studying the course of further austenite decomposition. In fact, the latter investigators have observed the amount of martensite formed as a function of temperature below M, in fourteen commercial steels. In the present paper, the Greninger-Troiano technique has been combined with the lineal method of Howard and Cohen9 to provide a unique, quantitative treatment of the austenite-martensite reaction. Furthermore, isothermal transformations have been similarly measured on holding at temperatures above and below M., thus permitting a fairly detailed presentation of the lower part of the conventional austenite transformation diagram. Experimental Details Materials The steels, listed in Table I, were selected for study because they exhibit a satisfactory range of M. temperatures and have not received as much attention as the lower carbon grades. They were prepared as 30 lb induction furnace heats in the laboratories of the Vanadium-Alloys
