The powder metallurgy and arc-cast types of wrought molybdenum stock were studied in rotating beam fatigue. Endurance ratios of unnotched specimens after 5x10 cycles were found to be 0.74 and 0.81, respectively. Fatigue notch factors (K,) of 1.36 and 2.05, respectively, were obtained on V-notched specimens having a theoretical stress-concentration factor Kt = 3.1. MOLYBDENUM and its alloys are rapidly gaining importance as engineering materials of construction for high temperature applications. AS a wrought material, molybdenum and its alloys are outstanding above 1800°F. It is necessary, however, with molybdenum to provide elevated temperature oxidation protection. This is currently being studied by a number of investigators. Thus far, there have been no published data on the fatigue behavior of molybdenum either at room temperature or at elevated temperature. The knowledge of fatigue behavior, particularly notched fatigue behavior, becomes increasingly important as the engineering importance of a material increases, especially from the design standpoint. The work described here was directed toward determination of the notched and unnotched rotating beam fatigue characteristics of molybdenum at room temperature. Also, it was desired to learn whether any difference exists between wrought molybdenum of the powder metallurgy and the are-cast types. Fabrication History of Bar Stock For this work, bar stock was procured from Climax Molybdenum Co. (are-cast type) and from Westing-house Electric Corp. (powder metallurgy type). The processing histories of these materials are listed in Table I. The first lot of are-cast molybdenum was deoxidized by aluminum additions. The second lot was deoxidized by carbon." Both lots of the powder Microstructure A microscopic examination of these materials, as received, revealed the powder metallurgy molybdenum to be free of inclusions and to be finely fibered. On the other hand, the are-cast C molybdenum possessed numerous carbide inclusions, and the arc-cast A appeared to have coarse grained fibers. These are shown in Fig. 1. Owing to the large apparent difference in fineness of fiber between the are-cast A and the powder product and are-cast C, a check was made of the recrystallized grain sizes to determine whether these differences persisted. A series of recrystallization anneals revealed mixed grain sizes in both the are-cast A and the powder product. Variations in grain diameter of as much as 50 times were found after full recrystallization at 1200°C for 30 min. There was no distinction between the two. Arc-cast C was not checked. Room Temperature Mechanical Properties Prior to subjecting the materials to fatigue tests, room temperature mechanical properties were determined. These data, together with the tensil: strength of the notched bars, data,togetherare listed in Table tensil: There were no significant differences in the tensile strengths of the two types of molybdenum. However, the powder metallurgy material was generally more ductile and yielded at a somewhat lower stress than the arc-cast material. Tensile strengths of the notched specimens indicated a slightly greater notch strengthening effect in the are-cast C than in the powder product, lot 2. Room Temperature Fatigue Properties Sample Preparation: Specimens were prepared for use in R. R. Moore rotating beam fatigue machines. These specimens had a continuous radius test section with a minimum diameter of 0.260 in. The specimens were prepared by grinding to shape and polishing to produce a smooth unworked surface. Polishing consisted of rotating a disk in the continuous radius section on which were attached, successively, emery belts of 240, 400, and 600 grit. The specimens were slowly rotated during the operation. The belt speed was high, and rotation was such that polishing scratches were longitudinal. Unnotched Fatigue Properties: Unnotched fatigue data were obtained from a number of specimens of each of the four lots of molybdenum. The results of the tests are presented in Fig. 2. A METHOD for the chemical differentiation of oxidized cobalt from sulphide cobalt in complex mine and concentrator products is of considerable interest to a number of mining companies throughout the world. At Rhokana Corporation, in Northern Rhodesia, for instance, cobalt is found chiefly in the sulphide form, as carrollite, but a cobalt oxide mineral also occurs irregularly underground, and relatively small quantities in the mill feed from time to time are difficult to detect it visually at the concentrator. The oxide cobalt is not amenable to the sulphide flotation process used at Rhokana and nearly all of it passes into the tailing. The occasional. period when high tailing losses occur with no appreciable change in the cobalt content of the mill feed has naturally been disturbing to the concentrator staff, who had no means of determining whether an influx of cobalt oxide ore or laxity on the part of the mill flotation operators were responsible for these results. A procedure for determining oxidized copper minerals, based on their solubility in dilute sulphuric acid saturated with SO2, has been used for many years in the copper industry. In the presence of cuprite the procedure fails, but otherwise it gives results quite satisfactory for control purposes. Empirical methods for determining oxidized forms of zinc and lead have been proposed, but they are generally unsatisfactory except in isolated cases of a very simple ore. No published procedure for determining oxidized forms of cobalt or similar elements has come to the authors' notice. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE There are obviously two alternatives in attacking a problem of this nature. One is to employ a solvent for oxide cobalt that will not dissolve cobalt sulphide. The other is, to find a substance capable of oxidizing the cobalt sulphide to sulphate, which of course is water-soluble and can then be leached from the water-insoluble oxide cobalt. A representative sample of Rhokana cobalt oxide ore was secured, ground to minus 200-mesh, and carefully rolled to furnish a standard sample for this work. The analysis of this material gave the following percentages: Co, 0.55; Cu, 1.64; Fe, 2.98; S, 0.08; SiO2, 41.42; A1203, 11.20; CaO, 13.82; MgO, 3.80. As a source of cobalt sulphide a similar large sample of carrollite was prepared, analyzing Co, 23.36 per cent; Cu, 27.32; and S, 31.13. This sample of course was not pure carrollite, but was the best obtainable in quantities sufficient for a standard intended for considerable work. It was a pure sulphide sample, microscopic examination showing only carrollite, a little bornite, and gangue, with no visible sign of oxidized ore present. INTRODUCTION Besides the European export credit agencies covered in Ted Rides' paper in this Chapter, other agencies are also active (see Appendix) but the most notable for mining projects are The Export-Import Bank of the United States ("US Exim") and the Export Development Corporation ("EDC") of Canada. Mexico's Fomex is basically a short-term trade-finance fund administered by the Central Bank. US Exim This independent agency can provide loans, guarantees, and insurance. Like all export-credit agencies, its mandate is to support the export of goods and services from the US as a means of competing against other countries' products. If a piece of mining equipment can only he made in the US, the US Exim may very well not provide any financial assistance. (It is important not to place the order for any item for which export credit is sought because, once ordered, the situation is no longer competitive in US Exim's eyes.) Direct Credits and financial guarantees ("buyer credits") are commonly in amounts greater than 85 million and for terms longer than six years. An example here is the $48.5 million provided to PT International Nickel Indonesia (see Robert de Gavre's paper in Chapter 12). US Exim usually requires a 15% downpayment and, therefore, finances up to 857 of the goods; less if the US content is lower. The dollar funding can he US prime, London Interbank Offered Rate (LIBOR), or other sources. Exim can fund in either or both of the following ways: 1. Under a US bank Letter of Credit ("L/C") 2. Reimbursement to the buyer/borrower via a US bank account. US Exim will, without charge, issue a preliminary commitment. It will, however, need to approve the various credit agreements and prefers to tie other parallel financings into one loan agreement. US Exim's total commitments are large, up to $5R billion in aggregate under various programs. US Exim has been the world's leader in medium-to long-term minerals project financings/ co-financings but suffers from (i) aggressive foreign export-credit competition whereby other nations mix in soft-loans or aid programs ("mixed credits") to increase the percentage financed and lower the interest margin and (ii) an imbalance in its own cost of funds. A common US Exim package would be as follows: 15% Banks under US Exim guarantee, floating rate over prime or LIBOR. 35% US Exim funding, fixed rate 35% Pefco funding, fixed rate 857 Drawn down pro-rata under US bank L/C 15% Cash down payment (may have been financed within a project/corporate credit) 100% Repayment usually begins six months after planned start-up in equal semi-annual instalments, with the banks usually paid out first, Pefco next, and US Exim last. Medium-term credits ("supplier credits") are issued for US equipment exports for terms up to five years, again for 85% of the equipment costs although the exporter is expected to bear at least 10% out of that 857 for its own risk. The buyer is required to be a first-class credit such as some governments or highly credit-worthy companies. Otherwise a bank L/C would be required. (This may be wrapped into an overall project-finance package for a minerals development. The project-finance banks provide an L/C to US Exim instead of funding that portion themselves.) US Exim guarantees 100% of the political risk and either 85% or 95% of the commercial risk for

DURING the past few years, a considerable tonnage of ilmenite has been produced as a byproduct of a monazite dredging operation and stockpiled near Boise, Idaho. This ilmenite has not been marketed because of the long distance from ilmenite-consuming areas and its comparatively low TiO2 content. Production of monazite from the alluvial sand deposits of Idaho is a mar- ginal venture when it is the only marketable product, and it will be necessary to establish a byproduct market before the operation becomes economically stable. Early in 1954, the Bureau of Mines Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory at Albany, Ore., conducted a series of tests which demonstrated that arc furnace smelting could be utilized to produce commercial quality pig iron and a high titanium content slag from these ilmenites. Additional studies showed that the slag chlorinated readily to produce a satisfactory yield of TiCl4. The investigation was carried out by two research teams. THE reagents now used in flotation consist of various acids or salts, which may be either electrolytes or non-electrolytes, dissolved in water and some substance or combination of substances which function as collecting or frothing agents. At times the only dissolved salts present are those naturally occurring in the water used. The general effect of the electrolyte is to greatly sharpen the separation between the gangue and the concentrate. Examples of this are: The use of sulphuric acid with zinc ores; and of sodium carbonate or calcium oxide (line) with silver-gold ores. Crude pyroligneous acid is also sometimes used when available. Various oxidizing agents, such as permanganates, bichromates, etc., are added in the selective flotation of lead-zinc ores. Many other reagents for performing certain specific functions, either real or imaginary, have been proposed, and a number of them have been tried upon a working scale. The wild orgy of experimentation which is now going on in flotation exceeds even that which followed the introduction of the Washoe process for the treatment of Comstock ores, when, among other things, sage-brush tea and tobacco juice were reagents added to the pans. Out of all this will, of course, eventually come a more or less standard practice for the treatment of each class of ore. Omitting a discussion of the functions of frothing and collecting agents, the reagents used in flotation for this purpose may be classified under five general heads: (1) Essential oils; (2) fixed or fatty oils;. (3) alcohols and their combinations with organic acids; (4) coal tar and its refined products; (5) petroleum and its refined products. A flotative agent of some kind is required in flotation as now practiced. A single reagent, as, for example, certain. of the essential oils, may perform the dual function of frothing and collecting agent, or a mixture of substances may be required.

The statistical data given in this paper are taken from the actual performance of the No. 2 reverberatory furnace of the Nevada Consolidated Copper Co., Mc Gill, Nev., for a period of four months, from April to July, 1914. The principal furnace dimensions are: Length, 132 ft. % in. at the skim-line level; average width, 18 ft., 10 in. at the skim-line level. The roof is 7 ft. above the skim-line level at the firing end. The average area in the uptake flue is 36 sq. ft., and the area above the skim line under the vulcatory arch is 24.3 sq. ft. Fig. 1 shows a diagrammatic plan and sectional elevation of this furnace. The furnace is equipped with two 400-b.h.p. Stirling waste-heat boilers set in parallel. California crude petroleum is used for fuel and has a specific gravity of 16.5" B., flashing in open test at 199" F. The oil is heated to about 200" F. in a steam heater before going to the burners, requiring about 9 b.h.p. per furnace day to heat it from the line temperature to the burning temperature. Measurement is made by oil meter, checked daily by reservoir readings. The oil is fed by gravity (34 Ib. static pressure) to seven low-pressure blast burners of the Steptoe type (Fig. 2). The blast for these burners is supplied at about 40-08. pressure by a motor-driven Connersville blower of 42 cu. ft. capacity per revolution. The air supplied by the blower through the burners for atomizing the oil amounts to about 10 per cent. of the theoretical air necessary for complete combustion of the oil. The remainder of the necessary air enters the furnace through the burner openings in the firing wall. No checker holes are provided, and the charge holes in the roof are equipped with slide gates and " dog houses" to minimize air leakages. The combustion of the fuel, as shown by gas analysis at the front of the furnace, is practically complete, the carbon monoxide in the gases being less than 0.5 per cent. The draft at the firing end of the furnace is 0.18 in. of water. At the throat or in the uptake above the "verb" the draft is about 1 in.

OF the four papers that comprise this Technical Publication, three are case histories of individual geophysical prospects, subsequently tested by drilling. The bibliography of Dr. Barton's published scientific paperst includes investigations in physiography and surface geological mapping, as well as his geophysical papers, and from this list it is to be observed that he early recognized the place of different types of geophysical prospecting methods in the search for geological structures of economic importance. Moreover, his viewpoint was not merely that the structures should be found, but that the geophysical data should be examined quantitatively to determine the geometry of the structures. In other words, that although these data are insufficient to deduce a unique form for the structure that caused the effects measured in the data, the engineering computations should be carried out to give as much of a definite configuration to the structure as the data permitted, in order that the testing of the structures could be conducted in the most economical manner and with the idea that the experience so gained could be later incorporated in the study of structures subsequently found. Dr. Barton continually emphasized the quantitative use of geophysical observations, whereas at the time that he began his specialization in geophysics it was considered sufficient to use observations only qualitatively. He, more than any one else, was responsible for the first volume on geophysical prospecting issued by the Institute in 1929, and his three articles in that volume stressed the quantitative use of geophysical prospecting. The fourth article in this present Technical Publication is a further contribution to this branch of geophysical interpretation, and is a supplement to the paper in the 1929 volume, "Calculations in the Interpretation of Observations with the Eötvös Torsion Balance." SINCE the observations of Heyn,1 relative to the embrittlement of copper after having been heated in hydrogen, this subject has received considerable attention from later investigators. The published works of Archbutt2 and of Bengough and Hill3 give the reasons for this embrittlement-the formation of steam by the reaction between cuprous oxide and hydrogen. From Ruder,4 Pilling,5 Moore and Beckinsdale,6 Bassett and Bradley,7 and from Smith8 can be obtained quantitative data concerning the action of hydrogen and other reducing gases on copper samples having various oxygen contents. This problem has been discussed from a practical standpoint by Fuller9 who calls attention to some of the instances of this embrittlement encountered in the manufacturing field. The examples he cites may be considered typical cases of copper embrittlement which were incident to the process of manufacture. In many cases, such difficulties are overcome by changes in the manufacturing process.

Forty years ago A. A. Griffith developed a theory explaining why brittle materials displayed such low tensile strengths.' He based his views on two points. First, he found himself compelled to assume that all brittle materials are replete with flaws, cracks, and other defects that act, although quite invisible, as large stress raisers. Second, he applied the "theorem of minimum potential energy," which says that the total potential energy of a system must pass from the unbroken to the broken condition by a process involving a continuous decrease in potential energy. By this means he satisfactorily accounted for the noted low strength of such solids and also for the wide spread obtained in experimental measurement of these strengths. So successful has the theory been that it is favored by some to this day. Unfortunately this theory is of limited use beyond the explanation of these two noted phenomena and it is keenly felt that a better theoretical insight into the physics of the fracturing process is needed as the volume of experimental evidence accumulates. The author proposes in the following to build on the fundamentally sound concepts of Griffith and, with the help of increased theoretical knowledge over that available to Griffith, develop a mechanism for frac-ture which will provide far greater understanding of the experimental evidence accumulated to date than is possible from the original Griffith idea. THE GRlFFlTH THEORY Very little progress indeed can be made without accepting the first postulate of Griffith which supposes all brittle solids to be full of microcracks. It would be difficult indeed to find a better mechanism for the small strength of such brittle materials, in conjunction with the fact that the energy that must be expended for comminution is by no means small. The postulate of the existence of the microcracks permits the breakup of the various bonds a few at a time by concentrating the stress at the tip of the progressing crack, while the total energy expended is the same as if they all had been ruptured simultaneously. The only flaw in the argument is that no reasonable explanation has been proposed to account for the genesis of such cracks. Indeed their very presence is in violation of the Griffith second postulate, the potential energy theorem. This theorem is straightforward for isothermal processes, and, in spite of Griffith, there is some doubt that treating the problem isothermally is legitimate. The surface energy of bodies is a free energy, not a potential energy as stated by Griffith, and the production of new surface free energies is not necessarily an isothermal process. There is ample evidence to the contrary. Generally speaking, if heating a body increases its surface area, then, by virtue of Le Chatelier's principle, any increase of that area by other means will tend to lower its surface temperature. Lord Kelvin calculated the actual cooling that resulted in drawing out a film of liquid.2 R. A. Houston calculated the surface cooling that resulted in stretching a metal wire.3 These calculations were made by applying the Carnot cycle to the process and evaluating the thermodynamics thereof. IRREVERSIBILITY OF THE FRACTURING PROCESS While Griffith was very careful not to say so, the impression gained from studying his papers is that he considered the fracturing process as reversible, that is, a succession of quasi-equilibrium states. There is ample evidence that it is not. The indication that the new surfaces produced by the propagation of a crack are cooler than the original body points to an irreversible heat flow from the interior to the new surfaces to equalize the temperatures. If the process be reversible, any crack accidentally formed should immediately close up as, in the absence of any strain energy, the potential energy would thereby be lowered. The fact that they do not, constitutes a paradox. Such paradoxes are nothing new where certain phenomena that propagate from minuscule nuclei are assumed to be reversible. Such is, for instance, the condensation of a pure saturated vapor that is suddenly chilled by adiabatic expansion. At the beginning the tiny droplets that are formed should be only a few angstroms in size, but the vapor pressure at such droplets is so high that they should evaporate at once. A similar situation arises if a saturated pure solution becomes super-saturated upon cooling; the first tiny crystal nuclei should dissolve as fast as

In conforniity with the design of the oficials of the United States Steel Corporation for the standardization of the methods employed in the sampling and analysis of all materials encountered in their various lines of manufacture, the Chemists' Committee presents this compilatioti of standard methods for the sampling and subsequent analysis of molten pig-iron. In selecting the methods, the Committee employed the same line of procedure as in former cases, viz., the careful consideration of all the methods employed in each laboratory of the Corporation, evolving therefrom the several methods herein described, the immediate adoption of which is desired. The services of Messrs. W. B. N. Hawk, William Brady, and C. H. Rich, a sub-committee appointed for the preparation of the present paper, are gratefully acknowledged. II. Introduction. A quite obvious cause of nonconformity of results of comparative analyses in the various laboratories of the Corporation has been an apparent lack of uniformity of method in the sampling and analysis of molten iron. This condition is particularly apparent with regard to the determination of the sulphur, numerous discrepancies in which would appear t.o indicate the absence of, and the necessity for, some uniform method of procedure. Systematic exploitation in the Pittsburg coal-seam on a large scale is simple where the boundaries of the property do not interfere by forcing drainage-, ventilation-, and transport-lines of entries to be run to particular confined fronts. A prime condition governing development is the natural direction of the seam's perpendicular cleavage-planes, giving long lines of smooth faces near together and parallel, bearing about 65' to the left of the meridian and therefore crossing the basins. The gradients of dip into the basins change from 10 per cent. at the east rim to practical flatness northwestward across the great coal-fields, a hundred miles wide; the dip being halved in rate at each successive crossing-over of an anticlinal crest. Elevations above sea-level on this transverse section, in scope of present development, differ by 1,000 ft. between low trough and high outcrop. Local irregularities of dip are found, but the main feature to be recognized is the pitch of the basins—the general rise northeastward at 20 ft. per mile, from 100 ft. below sea-level at the low point near the SW. corner of Pennsylvania to 1,500 ft. and more above tide, and the appearance then, at the surface, of the lower coal-seams carried in the next deeper-lying thousand feet of rock-measures; below which series come the oil- and gas-sands of Oliphant's charted column of strata, reaching down altogether 3,000 ft. below the Pittsburg coal-seam. Because of the general regularity of occurrence of the coal-seam, the mine-map depicting the courses of economic operation to be undertaken and the steps in controlled exhaustion, need be but a projection of two dimensions on the horizontal plane of space, and this for the most part composed of natural, almost unbroken lines, on the face and on the end of the coal, co-ordinating rectangularly.

THE work of Klier and Lyman1 on the bainite reaction has led to the full description of this reaction for medium-carbon low-alloy steels. Certain experimental data reported by Klier and Lyman appear, however, to be improbable of obtaining in very high-carbon steels. The study herein reported consists of an analysis of the transformation characteristics of a 3 per cent chromium, 1 per cent carbon steel by means of X-ray and metallographic methods. From the results obtained it is concluded that the bainite reaction in this steel is more complicated than that reported by Klier and Lyman for the low-carbon low-alloy steels. However, the mechanism of bainite formation in this steel appears to be essentially the same as proposed for the low-carbon low-alloy steels with the modification that the first volumes to transform are carbon-rich rather than carbon-poor. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The analysis of the steel studied was: Cr, 2.89; C, 1.02; Mn, 0.33; Si, 0.35; S, 0.012; P, 0.020. The stock was received from the Carpenter Steel Co. in rolled bars. Specimen Preparation Specimens were austenitized at 1200°C. (2192°F.) for 25 min. in purified nitrogen. The resultant A.S.T.M. austenite grain size was 0-1. Isothermal transformation was allowed by quenching the specimens into liquid metal baths controlled to ±5°C. at 540°C. (1004°°F.) and above, and to ±2°C. at 490°C. (914°°F.) and below. Following the desired degree of transformation all specimens were water quenched. Metallographic Examination Specimens 1/4 in. round by 1/4 in. were used for metallographic examination. Etchants used were Vilella's reagent (1 gram picric acid, 10 ml. hydrochloric acid to make l00 ml. ethyl alcohol solution) and alkaline sodium picrate (electrolytic). Vilella's reagent was effective in revealing all microconstituents, while the alkaline sodium picrate developed the carbon-rich structures or carbides only. X-ray Examination Two X-ray techniques were used-the Debye-Scherrer method and a back-reflection method. The small specimens necessary for the Debye-Scherrer method were austenitized and then allowed to transform, or were cut from the larger metallographic specimens. The metallographic specimens were used for the back-reflection X-ray analysis. When it was desirable to determine the structure of the carbide present, sliver specimens were electrolytically etched to develop a carbide coating, then were exposed in the cameras. This technique was frequently necessary to allow positive identification of the carbide.

In a previous paper,' The Behavior of Calcium Sulphate at Elevated Temperatures with Some Fluxes, we published the results of our investigation into the behavior of calcium sulphate in air; that is, under oxidizing conditions. The results as a whole hold good for a neutral atmosphere, or one which has no chemical effect upon calcium sulphate. The present paper deals with the behavior of calcium sulphate under reducing conditions, the reducing-agents employed being carbon monoxide and carbon, and the changes the calcium sulphide formed undergoes when it is subjected to an oxidizing-roast. Technical literature deals very sparingly with the subject. The information furnished by the recent leading chemical manuals is general. Thus Dammer,2 Missan,3 and Abegg4 quote Berthier as having reduced, in 1823, calcium sulphate with carbon, and Stammer as having done the same in 1851

Studies relating to the behavior of coal toward oxygen may have for their purpose the determination of the fundamental factors that underlie spontaneous combustion, weathering and deterioration, and the general topic of storage, as well as those properties that have to do with the underlying principles of carbonization. There is also involved the possibility of developing information relating to the constitution of coal, or at least the chemical properties inherent in the type substances of which the coal is composed. It is the purpose here to record certain results bearing on this latter idea of the chemical properties that characterize the main constituents of bituminous coal. The avidity of freshly mined coal for oxygen has long been known. What happens to the coal or to the oxygen is not so clear. Is the oxygen absorbed or chemically combined, and what are the conditions as to time, temperature, texture, or components that are most involved in the phenomenon? If we subject a weighed quantity of coal maintained at a constant temperature to a current of oxygen, we may obtain three factors of interest—the weight increase of the coal, the weight of the water, and the weight of the carbon dioxide formed in the reactions involved at that

In recent investigations of the isothermal transformations of the retained 0 phase in a titanium alloy having 13 pct V, 11 pct Cr, and 3 to 4 pct Al, there have been indications that the w transition phase is the initial decomposition product at temperatures below about 950°C (510 c).' This metastable phase, found in a number of titanium-base alloys rich in stabilizing elements and known to have an adverse effect on their ductility and toughness, is not easily observed by the usual experimental techniques. Since wis coherent with the /3 matrix,495 distinct interphase boundaries are not revealed metallographically. However, in some cases, an etching effect (i-e., a "mottled" /3 surface) poorly resolved by light microscopy has been found to correspond with the presence of w.6 X-ray diffraction examination has generally been the most suc- cessful means for identifying this phase and crys-tallographic determinations have been made.4'5 Dynamic elastic modulus7 and electrical resistivity measurementse have also aided in the identification of w. In the current study, the electron microscope was utilized to examine microstructures in aged Ti-13V-11Cr-3A1 that were unresolvable by light microscopy techniques. Smyth, presided at the dinner, at the close of which he introduced, as the speaker of the evening, John M. Longyear, who gave a most interesting talk about his work in exploring for coal on the islands of Spitzbergen, 400 miles north of the North Cape of Norway.
