IN common with others, the zinc industry found itself after the war largely over-capitalized, a condi-tion which still exists notwithstanding that Tri-State production has doubled since prewar days. This is partly due to the abnormal war demands and partly because of the war impetus given to research, a stim-ulus that because of its success has persisted (and probably will persist) constantly since then. Improved practice and metallurgy resulting from research are today responsible for an increased pro-duction in the Tri-State district of 15 per cent over the practice of five years ago, and the giant strides in this respect in the western states together with the more moderate advance in the Tri-State district has thrown out of equilibrium the more or less balanced production of before the war and production has con-sequently gained on consumption, a condition resulting in rapidly narrowing profits in the Tri-State field, where the present average cost is actually greater than the price received for our product. Despite this condition, no thinking person will de-plore the cause or means used to achieve a greater production and, as this progress is merely the economic application of intelligent thought, it follows that equal effort and thought may be expected to produce the remedy. It has been suggested that the practical application of research has resulted in less need for man-power and consequently in the lessening of employment to common labor and to engineers. I cannot think that such is the case although personally I have received more ap-plications for employment during the last two years than ever before. But when one considers the strides production of all commodities has taken, it is difficult to reconcile this immense development with the possible increase in pop-ulation especially in view of our stringent immigration laws. Whether or not improved industrial methods are responsible for the lessening of employment the ques-tion as to the wisdom of such improvement is hardly debatable. While the Tri-State district of Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri continues to be the leading factor in the zinc¬mining industry, gradually lowering prices during 1925 and 1926 and a. decided drop during 1927, have de-creased its production almost 20 per cent, this tonnage having largely been replaced by western concentrates.

The annealing behavior and the mechanism of re-orientation during recrystallization of iodide titanium cold-rolled 94 pct have been studied in detail. Results indicate that recrystallization occurs by the nucleation and growth of new grains, as in other common metals. Recrystallization nuclei form by the coalescence of subgraim, and the change in texture as a result of recrystallization is largely due to selective growth among the nuclei formed. The annealing of titanium is characterized by a wide range of overlap of the various stages of the annealing process, which may be responsible for a range of activation energies observed, and for the apparently gradual change in the annealing texture as a function of time or temperature. The deformation and recrystallization characteristics of titanium and zirconium are very similar. In cold-rolled strip, the deformation texture consists of two symmetrically oriented components, each having the basal plane laterally tilted at about 30 deg from the rolling plane and the [1010] direction parallel to the rolling direction. Upon annealing for recrystallization, the change in texture can be described, for simplicity,* as rotations around [0001].2'6'8 According to McGeary and Lustman,' recrystallization occurs in zirconium through normal growth of the subgrains, which they called "domains", without the nucleation of new grains; and the magnitude of rotation around the [0001] axis increases gradually during the progress of recrystallization. If these conclusions were true, the mechanism of recrystallization in zirconium would be basically different from that in most metals, since it is commonly known that recrystallization with reori-entation always involves the migration of high-angle boundaries. In an attempt to clarify the situation, the mechanism of reorientation during recrystallization in iodide titanium cold-rolled 94 pct was studied in detail. The structural and textural changes upon annealing at various temperatures were examined by optical and transmission-electron microscopy, X-ray pole figures, pole density distribution measurements, and micro-beam techniques. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Material and Specimen Preparation. An iodide titanium crystal bar was are-melted and solidified in a cold-hearth crucible under a purified argon atmosphere. The solidified ingot had dimensions of approximately 3 by 1/2 by 3 in. One face of the ingot was somewhat uneven, but was as clean and shiny as the remaining parts of the ingot. Large grains with a Widmanstatten internal structure were clearly shown on the shiny surfaces, indicating the occurrence of P — a transformation upon rapid cooling from the melt. Analysis of the are-melted ingot indicated C 0.033, N 0.010, H 0.013, 0 0.002 in weight percent, and traces of iron, copper, and silicon as detectable impurities. The ingot was cold-rolled -40 pct to 0.300 in. thick with a reduction of 0.005 in. per pass. The defects on the uneven side of the ingot were then removed by machining. This reduced the thickness to 0.285 in. The piece was then recrystallized by annealing at 800°C for 1 hr in a fused silica boat charged into a fused silica tube furnace under a vacuum of 10~5 mm Hg. To refine the grain size, the recrystallized metal was again cold-rolled 40 pct to 0.170 in., then annealed at 700°C for 1 hr. These treatments yielded a strip with a uniform equiaxed grain structure, having a penultimate average grain diameter of 0.04 mm and a hardness of approximately 90 Dph. Final rolling reduced the thickness from 0.170 to 0.010 in., corresponding to a reduction of 94 pct. The strip was rolled in both directions by reversing end for end between passes. Surface lubrication was provided by oil-soaked pads attached to both rolls. Specimens of 1 in. length (for X-ray examinations) and +in. length (for hardness and microstructure examinations) were cut from the rolled strip, and a width of & in. was cut from the edges of each specimen by a jeweler's saw. These specimens were then etched in a solution of 10 cu cm HN03, 5 cu cm HF, and 50 cu cm H,O to 0.008 in. thick to remove the surface metal, as well as the distorted metal at the saw cuts, prior to annealing or measurements. To minimize any surface reaction with the atmosphere, all specimens were kept in an evacuated desiccator. Isothermal Anneals. All annealing treatments were conducted in vacuum in a fused silica tube furnace as described earlier. The temperature of the furnace was controlled to within *2"C. The specimen was placed in a fused silica boat, then pushed into the hot zone of the furnace. It took about 5 to 6 min for the specimen to reach the furnace temperature. After the specimen was held at temperature for a desired length of time the boat was pulled to the cold zone of the furnace; the heating-up period was excluded from the isothermal annealing time. Thus, the uncertainty in annealing time is higher for very short anneals, but negligible for long anneals.

A serious problem confronted the city of Gunnison early in 1958 in that, for a few months during each spring runoff, the water supply derived from the Gunnison River became polluted to an unsafe point. The city management had the choice of building a new filter plant to replace the old unworkable one or drilling wells to develop a ground water supply. The cost of a new filter plant was estimated at $180,000 compared to $50,000 for 6 wells, pumps, and additional water lines, hence their decision to attempt the development of sufficient ground water. Six wells at 300 gpm per well were estimated as necessary to handle the peak usage of 1800 gpm, compared to only 600 gpm winter usage. Although the water table is only about 7 feet below the surface, existing private wells drilled at random locations were producing much less than 300 gpm. The problem was to find sufficient quantities from about 6 wells. Since the presence of an ancient bedrock channel was suspected, which would be expected to localize greater quantities of water, the city of Gunnison authorized a resistivity survey to investigate bedrock topography below unconsolidated gravels. Survey results were highly satisfactory and led to the preparation of a fairly detailed bedrock contour map, Fig. 1. This map was used in selection of all well sites. The city of Gunnison is situated in a flat, broad, Quaternary gravel-filled valley (terrain dips south at 20 feet per mile) at the junction of the Gunnison River and Tomichi Creek. The valley, about 2-4 miles wide, is bordered by hills of Tertiary volcanics to the northwest, Cretaceous and Jurassic sediments to the north and northeast, and pre-Cambrian granite and gneiss to the south. One previous deep test well at the west end of the city hit pre-Cambrian granite at 496 feet, which, allowing for 40 feet of surface gravels, makes the older sedimentary section 456 feet thick. This section is probably all Jurassic Morrison formation, consisting of the Saltwash sandstone overlain by the much thicker section of Brushy Basin shales and mudstones. According to the driller's logs, each well was bottomed in what is believed to be Brushy Basin shale. FIELD PROCEDURE A standard Gish-Rooney type of resistivity apparatus was employed, which used 45-volt dry batteries as a direct-current power source. Applied voltages could be selected from 45 volts to a 270-volt maximum. Copper-coated steel stakes were employed as current electrodes and porous porcelain pots as potential electrodes to avoid possible polarization effects with direct current. The expanding Wenner electrode configuration was utilized for this investigation and measurements were made at 20 40, 60, 80, and 100-foot spacings,

INTRODUCED in 1946 to serve a need in power- plant operation, closed-circuit TV has been used by well over 200 organizations in approximately 25 different industries. Known as industrial television, or simply ITV, it can be described as a private system wherein the television signal is restricted in distribution, usually by confinement within co-axial cable that directly connects the TV camera to one or several monitors, Figs. 1, 2. The picture is continuous and transmission is instantaneous, permit- ting an observer to see an operation that may be too distant, too inaccessible, or too dangerous to be viewed directly. Destructive testing or the machining of high explosives can now be conducted hundreds of feet away by personnel who still have close control through the eyes of the TV camera. It is also possible for one man to control operations formerly requiring the co-ordinated efforts of several workers. For example, at a large midwestern cement plant conveyance of limestone from primary crusher to raw mill and loading into five storage bins once necessitated the work of two men, one having little to do but prevent spilling of material by manually moving the tripper on the belt conveyor as occasion required. TV cameras mounted on the tripper now provide bin level indication to the conveyor operator at the crusher position so he is able to control the entire loading operation remotely, Fig. 3. By means of a switch, the picture from either camera is alternately available on a single viewer, or monitor, Fig. 4. Each camera is mounted on the tripper by means of a simple adjustable support and looks down into the bin, which is identified by the number of cross members on the vertical rod. Each associated power unit is located on a platform above the camera, Fig. 5. This centralized control by means of TV often has produced superior results, and in many instancés saving in operating costs has been sufficient to write off equipment costs within six months to a year.

Parabolic rate constants were determined for the formation of wiistite by the solid state reaction between magnetite and iron. The reaction was diffusion controlled and inert marker studies indicated that the mass transport through the wiistite layer was accomplished by means of iron migration. Relationships between rate constants and self-diffusivities are discussed. The transport capacity for iron through dense wustite layers was found to be sufficient to carry on reduction, even in gaseous reduction processes. REDUCTION of iron oxides has been the subject of many investigations. Most of the work, however, has been done on rather crude material and there have been difficulties in correlating the data on a quantitative basis. The reverse process of the oxidation of iron has been studied more thoroughly and usually by starting from the pure metal. As a result, the mechanisms of oxidation are now fairly well known.It has generally been found that the oxidation of metals follows the so-called parabolic 1aw;Q hat is, when the oxides are formed as dense layers, their thicknesses are proportional to the square root of the reaction time. This parabolic law follows directly from Fick's first law of diffusion The flux, J, is defined as the quantity of diffusing substance passing per unit time through unit area of a plane at right angles to the direction of diffusion. This flux is proportional to the concentration gradient of the diffusing substance, and the factor D, known as the diffusion coefficient, is introduced as the proportionality factor with dimensions of (length)'/time. If the flux is measured as the increase of thickness of the oxide layer (Ax) per unit time (t) and the assumption is made that the concentrations of the reactants at the phase boundaries of the layer are independent of time, Eq. 1 reduces to Integration of this expression yields the parabolic function ax = k . t. [31 The product of the diffusion coefficient and the concentration difference across the oxide layer is included in the constant k. When iron is exposed to a highly oxidizing atmosphere, the oxide phases are formed normally in a topochemical fashion, i.e., the interfaces between the phases maintain parallel positions to the original surface of the specimen. Above 570°C, the phases are orientated usually in the order of iron, wiistite, magnetite, and hematite, a condition in conformance with the requirements of the Fe-0 system. Below 570°C, the wiistite phase is unstable and has not been found as a normal constituent in the oxidation products of iron. There is a strong probability that continuous layers of the solid oxides are formed as the specific volumes of the phases increase in direct order from iron to hematite.' , ' Regarding mass transport through dense solid oxide layers, Wagner' has postulated that diffusion in oxides generally may be interpreted as migration processes of ions and electrons. There must be normally a concentration gradient across the growing oxide layer for diffusion to occur. This condition requires that there be deviations from the ideal stoi-chiometric composition of the oxide and accordingly deviations from the strict order of an ideal lattice. Such "lattice defects" include interstitial ions, cation and anion vacancies, quasi-free electrons, and electron holes and are decisive for all migration processes.' Cations, anions, and electrons all may have some mobility in the oxides but the movement of one of the particles generally far exceeds that of the others. Previous work', 1,2,7 has shown that during the oxidation of iron the migration through the wiistite layer, and probably also the magnetite layer, is confined to the movement of iron ions. Migration through hematite, however, has been found to take place by oxide ion movement. These behaviors are in direct agreement with the type of vacancies present in the respective oxides. Reduction of Iron Oxides The gaseous reduction of iron oxides, like the oxidation of iron, takes place in a topochemical fashion at distinct interfaces between the appearing phases."-'" Porosities might be expected in these reaction products, since their specific volumes are less than that of the starting material. Frank and van Der Merwe" have shown, however, that it is theoretically possible for nonporous layers to form if the degree of misfit in specific volume is less than about 15 pct. Knowledge of the theory underlying the behavior of mixtures of fluids in reservoir rocks is essential to the proper solution of certain types of problems in petroleum production, but is as yet incompletely developed. The object of this paper is to show the application of well established thermody-namic and physical principles to these problems, and thus to assist in the development of the basic theory. For convenience the problems to be considered here may be divided into two groups: 1. Static problems, involving only the static balance between capillary forces and those due to the difference in densities of the fluids; i.e., gravitational forces. 2. Dynamic problems, involving analysis of the motion oi mixtures of immiscible fluids in porous media under the influence of forces due to gravity, capillarity, and an impressed external pressure differential. Capillary Equilbrium in Sands Under this heading the static type of problem will be discussed and the results of experimental investigations on the capillary properties of unconsolidated sands will be presented. Although the discussion of this section is, in a sense, prefatory to the treatment of problems of mixture flow, the concepts developed here have considerable intrinsic importance apart from their ap-plication to flow problems. For, it is reason-able to postulate that the reservoir fluids are, owing to their long existence in undis- turbed mutual contact prior to exploitation, in substantial equilibrium. It follows that their distribution in the reservoir at the time of tapping should be entirely predictable from the theory of capillary equi librium, provided certain experimentally measurable properties of the reservoir rock are known. Knowledge of the distribution of the several fluids in the reservoir is, ol course, helpful in the estimation of reserves and in other problems. It is to be emphasized that throughout the discussion of capillary statics it is assumed that the fluids are in equilibrium from the capillary standpoint. Thus, water, where it is referred to as being in a reservoir, will be understood to be interstitial water, present at the time of drilling the reservoir, commonly termed "connate" water. The theory developed here is perfectly general for any porous solid, whether a carefully prepared unconsolidated sand or a natural sandstone from an oil reservoir. At present, however, only problems involving clean, unconsolidated sands can be made to yield numerical solutions, since only such sands have been adequately investigated experimentally. Experimental evaluation of the pertinent properties 01 natural reservoir rocks will permit the extension of the numerical treatment to problems involving these materials. We shall now consider in some detail the static equilibrium of fluid mixtures in porous solids: that is, the manner in which the reservoir fluids are distributed vertically whell the Forces due to capillarity are just balanccd by those due to gravitation.

Calculated wellbore pressures were obtained for parameters of radilcs ratio and permeability. In all cases bur two, after-production was allowed to occur for one day. The calculated pressure build-up data were compared with actual pressure build-up data from a condensate well. The paper discusses the comparison, gives reasons for, inability to match calculated (2nd actual data, and presents conc1usions derived from the comparison. INTRODUCTION Considerable information has been published on the decline in wellbore pressure for oil and gas fields resulting from production of fluids. Considerable information also has been published on pressure build-up for oil fields, but relatively little has been published for gas and condensate fields. Perrine' summarized the equations derived for pressure build-up in oil wells and showed how the different methods could be applied. On the other hand, very little theoretical information has been published on pressure build-up in gas or gas-condensate wells.2-4 Tracy,' by pointing out the similarity between the equation describing oil wellbore pressure decline and the equation describing gas wellbore pressure decline, showed how methods of pressure build-up analysis could be applied to a gas well. In analyzing pressure build-up data for gas or gas-condensate wells, it would be very desirable to compare actual pressure build-up data with calculated pressure build-up data. Such a comparison would lead to a better feeling for the quantitative picture of gas-well build-up curves and would help to establish a degree of confidence in a given build-up curve. This paper discusses the comparison and presents conclusions made from it. Calculated wellbore pressures are given for parameters of radius ratio and permeability. In all cases but two, after-production was allowed to occur for one day. The work was done in an attempt to evaluate the reserves of a gas-condensate field. As will be discussed later, it was not possible to make an evaluation. METHOD OF CALCULATION The method used for solving the depletion and pressure build-up behavior for a gas-condensate well was that developed by West, Garvin and Sheldon.5 or the IBM 704 computer program used, it was assumed that liquid condensing out of solution would have only a minor effect on the flow behavior. Therefore, the field was treated as having single-phase flow, with the gas saturation S, remaining constant at unity minus the connate-water saturation Sw. As will be discussed later, this may not have been a good assumption. It also was assumed that oil production could be considered as equivalent gas production by using a conversion factor based on an analysis of the liquid produced. An outer boundary condition of no-flow was assumed. BASIC DATA The data required for the study were reservoir properties, fluid properties and production data. Reservoir properties included the following: thickness h, 179 ft; porosity, 0.194; connate-water saturation, 0.43; gas saturation, 0.57; permeabilities k, 1.0, 0.5, 0.25 and 0.15 md; radius ratios re/rw, 800, 1,000 and 2,000; wellbore radius rw, 5 in.; initial reservoir pressure P, 6,529 psia; and reservoir temperature, 272°F. The selection of permeabilities was based on core-analysis data showing an average air permeability of about 2 md. With a relatively high connate-water saturation, the average effective gas permeability would be about one-half, or less, of the air permeability. The selection of radius ratios was based partly on the observed rapid decline in wellbore pressure during production and partly on the fact that the well was believed to be located in a relatively small fault block. Reservoir fluid properties were obtained from a reservoir fluid study on a recombined sample of gas and condensate. Gas formation-volume factors were calculated from pressure-volume measurements made at reservoir temperature. Gas viscosities were calculated by the method of Carr, et al,G from an analysis of the re-combined sample. These data are shown as a function of pressure in Table 1. Few of the present generation of American steel metallurgists are aware of the very important part taken by Swedish engineers in the successful development of the Bessemer proeess, and I am afraid some of the older ones have forgotten it. Certainly, I think, most of us would have said that Terre Noire was the first to introduce the use of metal direct from the blast-furnace. It is very well, therefore, that honor should be given to whom honor is due. I can speak from personal experience upon one part only of Prof. Akerman's paper; namely, the effect of the temperature at which the molten metal is cast upon the quality of the finished steel. FRIEDENSVILLE orebody in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, lies in the south central part of the USGS Allentown Quadrangle. Physiographically the area is located in a small reentrant-known as Saucon Valley-of the Great Valley Province into the Reading Prong of the New England uplift. Saucon Valley itself is an oval-shaped lowland eight miles long and four miles wide, surrounded by ridges except where connected with the Great Valley through a breach in the rim known as Saucon Gap. These ridges, composed of Pre-Cambrian metamorphic rocks and Cambrian quartzites, rise some 500 ft above the valley floor. They are continuous with the New Jersey Highlands. The valley lowland is immediately underlain by lower Paleozoic dolomites and limestones. This area is one of low relief having a swing of approximately 100 ft, with an average elevation of 375 ft above sea level. The entire valley, which has a water shed of about 58 sq miles, is drained by Saucon Creek. This unit flows in a northeasterly direction to the Saucon Gap, where it discharges into the Lehigh River.

The campaign now being waged to improve the quality of the rock-drill bit is the natural outcome of the scientific development of the drilling machine during the past twenty years. In this development there has been a great increase of power output per unit of weight of machine. But the development of the rock drilling engine has been seriously hampered by the need of a drill bit that would withstand, without undue wear or breakage, the heavy rapid blows of the improved pneumatic hammer. This problem was difficult to solve because an increase in the weight or section of the drill-steel bar resulted in decreased cutting speed and higher operating costs of both the bit and its actuating engine. The solution, therefore, is to make the bit of steel that, for a given weight or section, will be more shock and wear resisting. In the attempt to meet these requirements, many of the drill-steel manufacturers alloyed the steel with vanadium, chromium, nickel, etc. on the assumption that such elements would improve the rock-drill bit but due to the sensitiveness of such steel to forging and heat treatment, higher cost, and lack of continuity of effort on the part of the steel manufacturer to perfect this product, but little progress has been made in the adoption of these steels and the so-called straight carbon steel is today recognized as the standard material for all rock-drill bits. The first step in improving drill-bit efficiency is the determination of the cause of breakage and wear. For this reason, in 1917, certain rock-drill manufacturers, in conjunction with some of the larger mining interests, conducted exhaustive tests in both the field and the laboratory. It was then found that, in the main, the cause of drill-steel troubles is not attributable to the duty imposed upon it by the normal operation of the drilling engine, but to improper forging and heat treating of the bit and to the subjecting of the bit to improper use. The fact that it is possible to minimize the troubles attributable to improper heat treatment of the drill steel has been demonstrated and it is recommended that such knowledge be made available by teaching those interested in the production, use, and up-keep of drill bits the principles on which success in this direction may be achieved. This paper, descriptive of a single mine, is presented in the belief that it may furnish useful suggestions to mine-managers encountering similar problems; and it includes the details which will enable them to estimate the value of the methods employed—especially where these depart from common practice. Tt should be added, however, that this mine is not typical of the San Juan district, but differs markedly from neighboring mines in physical conditions and metallurgical requirements. The Liberty Bell mine is situated in San Miguel county, Colo., on the west front of the San Juan mountains, 2 miles north of Telluride. The vein was discovered in 1876 by Wm. L. Cornett, who, with subsequeilt locators, took up claims along the apex. Operations ill Colorado oil fields in 1934 were not quite so extensive as in 1933, but much better results were obtained and one new oil field was discovered. In all, 26 wells were drilled, of which 9 were oil wells, 1 was a gas well, and 16 were dry holes. New oil production totaled 10,220 bbl. and new gas production totaled 33,714,000 cu. ft. This compares with new oil production in 1933 of 1238 bbl. and new gas production of 14,307,000 cu. ft. Dry holes in 1933 totaled 29 as conlpared with 16 in 1934. Oil was discovered in the Hiawatha gas field, Moffat County, in 1934 in the Mountain Fuel Supply Company's No. 4B Wilson, C. NE. NW. of sec. 23, 12N., 100W. This well was completed in a sand in the Wasatch (Tertiary) at 2304 to 2337 ft., after plugging back from 3797 ft. It made 20 bbl. of oil initially. No. 4B Wilson is the first well in the Rocky Mountain region to discover oil in commercial amounts in rocks younger than Cretaceous, and while it is not expected that Hiawatha will develop into an oil field of important proportions, eventually it may produce a considerable amount of oil as the gas pressure declines. Forecasts of future timber consumption in soft-coal mining are handicapped by the lack of adequate experience records for estimating properly the timber requirements of the industry. Data were obtained from plants where records are kept or from operators who collected the information and to these were added composite figures for the continental United States in 1905 and 19191 and for central and western Pennsylvania and for Illinois in 1922.2 The result, representing slightly over 928,000,000 net tons, is shown in Table 1. Some of the companies furnishing data were unable to segregate the timber into classes of use but for those who did, Table 2 shows the board feet of posts and cross ban used per ton of coal mined and the percentage of the total timber consumed that was used in roof support. At present the demands of the United States for strorltium are met by imports from Germany, England and Canada, which vary considerably in proportions of ore and finished salts, in tonnage and in value. Statistics for the period 1926-1932 are given in Table 1. Domestic deposits arc known in many states, but the larger and purer ones are in the West, particularly in the desert region of southeastern California and western Arizona. These deposits are large enough to command interest, particularly in consideration of future cheap power at the Boulder Dam. The deposits described in this paper were examined during an investigation of the mineral resources of the Boulder Dam region by the United States Geological Survey for the United States Bureau of Reclamation in the spring of 1934. Mr. D. F. Hewett, who had general charge of the investigation, Mr. W. T. Schaller and Mr. M. I. Goldman contributed many helpful suggestions. Mr. N. H. The conductivity of liquid copper sulfide has been measured as a function of the mole fraction of sulfur in the melt at three temperatures: 1170°, 1250°, and 1300°C. The results show that a) the conductivity of copper-rich Cu,S is independent of the sulfur pressure in the furnace, and b) the conductivity of sulfur-rich copper sulfide increases rapidly with sulfur pressure. Assuming that the band theory is applicable to liquids leads to the conclusion that copper-rich copper sulfide is an intrinsic semiconductor, in which case electrons act as carriers. The activation energy for conduction in this case has been calculated to be 0.7 ev. On the other hand, sulfur-rich copper sulfide behaves as a p-type semiconductor, positive holes being responsible for conduction. IN order to elucidate the structure of Liquid copper (1) sulfide, Derge, Pound, and Osuchl have studied the electrical conductivity of this compound as a function of temperature. Their results showed that the conductivity is rather high, of the order of 100 ohm" cm", and that the temperature coefficient of conductivity is positive. This high conductivity seemed to indicate electronic rather than ionic conduction. This conclusion was checked further by Derge, Pound, and Yang,2 who measured the current efficiencies of copper sulfide melts at various temperatures. In all cases, the current efficiency was found to be nil, indicating the absence of appreciable ionic contribution to the conduction in

CLEAR sunny skies that prevailed all through the 175th General Meeting of AIME were not the 1east of the details that resulted from the many months and man-hours of p1anning by the Southern California Local Section. Some 2600 persons left the 1953 Annual Meeting technically enlightened, having had a choice of over 300 papers presented by 400 authors to listen to, learn from, and criticize. During the meeting, Mike Haider turned over the Presidency of AIME for 1953 to Andrew (Drew) Fletcher.
