Oil and gas development as well as extensive leasing in Kentucky during 1940 has shown a marked improvement over the past three years.$ The most noticeable improvement is the gas development in eastern Kentucky and the deep tests being drilled by major oil interests. In western Kentucky, 406 wells were drilled, of which 173 were oil producers, 12 were gas wells and 221 were dry or abandoned. The number of dry tests was large, because no important, new oil or gas pool was discovered and many of the dry holes could be considered wildcat tests. However, with either oil or gas possibilities from Pennsylvanian formations on through Mississippian, Silurian, Devonian, and Ordovician, this percentage of dry holes seems rather high. Many of the dry tests possibly should have been tested in deeper horizons before being abandoned: namely, Silurian and Ordovician ages. In eastern Kentucky, 213 wells were drilled, of which 113 were gas producers, 61 were oil wells, and 39 were dry holes. Of these wells, 117 were drilled in the most important Big Sandy gas field, in Floyd, Pike, Knott and Martin Counties, and of this number 103 were gas producers, 5 were oil wells, and 9 were dry holes. In the Big Sinking oil field of Estill, Lee and Powell Counties, 70 of the remaining 96 wells were drilled, j6 being oil producers. During 1940, four deep tests were drilled in eastern Kentucky. One test penetrated the Knox dolomite in Knox County and was dry; no St. Peter sand was encountered. Another test in Lee County had some gas in what might be called St. Peter sand, according to the State Department, and also some gas deeper in the Knox dolomite. In Wolfe County, a small oil well was completed in the Ordovician, which was undoubtedly of Trenton age. ilt the present time, four deep tests are being drilled, all of which will go to the Knox dolomite. In Elliott County, on the Burke dome, the Inland Gas Co, is drilling at 3650 ft. In Magoffin County, on the Paint Creek uplift, the Cumberland Petroleum Co. is drilling at 3800 ft. In Clark County, in the Ruckerville fault area, W. 0. Allen is drilling at 1800 ft. In Laurel County, on the Sinking Creek dome, the Globe Oil and Gas Co. is drilling at I750 ft. If production is encountered in the Trenton, St. Peter, or Knox dolomite in any of these tests, eastern Kentucky will experience a marked increase in deep development.

Improvements in the X-ray method of measuring liquid saturation and saturation distribution are presented. Two identical direct current amplifiers have been added to measure continuously the intensities of the X-ray tube output and the beam which has passed through the core under test. The ratio of these intensities is automatically recorded on a modified Brown Electronik Recorder. Arrangements have been made to drive the core automatically and in synchronism with the recorder chart so as to give a continuous curve showing the variation of liquid saturation along the length of the core. By determining the ratio of the two X-ray beam intensities simultaneously the measurements are made essentially independent of small fluctuation in voltage and current supplied to the tube. This improved technique has been used for investigating the fluid distribution along the length of cores and core assemblies when one fluid is displaced by another. Typical results of these studies are shown. INTRODUCTION In a previous publication' a method was described for measuring the oil saturation in cores which was based on the absorption of X-rays by the fluid content of the core. While that technique is capable of yielding accurate results, the original apparatus was not especially convenient for determining the fluid distribution along the length of a core. This was primarily due to the slow response of the amplifier and galvanometer and the necessity of making a point by point survey of the material under investigation. It was, therefore, not only possible for sections of the core having a variable or unusual saturation distribution to escape observation entirely, but changes in output of the X-ray generator between readings on the unknown and the monitor introduced errors in the measurements that could be avoided only by further stabilization of the source or by taking a large number of readings. This paper describes a method and apparatus for recording continuously and automatically the intensity of the X-ray beam that is transmitted by a core. The variation of saturation with time at a given section of the core may thus be found, or by scanning the core by driving it in synchronism with the recorder the saturation distribution may readily be determined. As indicated in the previous paper, the X-ray method possesses an advantage over the weighing technique in relative permeability experimentation in that the core need not be removed from the holder for the purpose of making a saturation measurement. Furthermore, the actual distribution of fluid and the effects upon that distribution of inflow and outflow heads may be investigated. And errors due to gas bubbles or loss of liquid that are frequently sources of error in volumetric methods of saturation determination are avoided. PRINCIPLE OF THE METHOD The energy in an X-ray beam that has passed through an absorbing material is expressed by the well known formula: E = E0, e-cd (1) where E, is the energy in the incident beam, µ the mass absorption coefficient, c the density or concentration of absorbing material, and d is the length of path of the beam in the absorber. The coefficient µ varies with the wavelength of the radiation as well as with the absorbing material. The output of an X-ray tube varies in an approximately linear manner with the tube current, but to the second or higher power of the anode voltage. Moreover, the quality or wavelength distribution of the radiation varies with the voltage.

A knowledge of the magnitude of the irreducible inter.;titial water in a porous medium is so important to petroleum engineering that its determination has become routine in core analyses. The method of determination, being a production problem, should encompass the basic requirements of simplicity in technique and calculations, with reproducible results obtainable in a short interval of time. The results of the evaluation tests outlined in this report indicate that the evaporation method for determining the irreducible water is a technique which meets the requirements. The procedure consists, as the name implies. of permitting the saturant in the pore spaces to evaporate until only an irreducible volume remains. The determination of this volume can be made either graphically or by a mathematical comparison of fluid flows; the time required for each determination being dependent on the fluid used. When fluids other than those having reservoir characteristics were used, a volume factor had to be calculated which was based on the relative volume of various liquids adsorbed on grain surfaces and retained in pores. This factor made possible the calculation of an irreducible water volume when more volatile fluids such as toluene and benzene were used as the saturants. Also presented is the theoretical discussion necessary for the calculation of the capillary pressure as determined from the evaporation curve. A comparison is made between the calculated values and those obtained by experimental means. INTRODUCTION In all geological formations there exists, in the pore spaces of the rock structure, water that is held in a state of equilibrium between capillary and hydrostatic forces. "Interstitial water" is the term given to this water and is defined as that water coexisting in the pore space with the oil prior to exploitation. The term ''connate water" has often been used synonymously with this term; however, this can be true only by a specific definition since, geologically, it means the water in place at the time the rock structure was formed. The quantity of the interstitial water is a variable factor in any formation, since it depends on the hydrostatic forces present in any multiple-phase system. These forces may become unbalanced by the introduction of an extraneous force such as the raising or lowering of the "water table" or the migration of oil into a water-filled formation. Any unbalanced force results in a change in the interstitial water. There exists, however, an irreducible interstitial water. for a particular sand, that is the fraction of the pore space occupied by water when the capillary pressure at the particular point in question is at an equilibrium with the hydrostatic head of the oil sand in the reservoir. For this discussion the term "irreducible water saturation" will be used in place of "irreducible interstitial water saturation" for the sake of brevity; however, they are understood to be identical. A great amount of work has been devoted to the theory and methods for studying the irreducible water saturation and its related capillary pressure. As a result of the publications of Leverett;' Hassler, Brunner and Deahl;2 Calhoun and Lewis;3 and others, the role of capillary pressure studies is being accepted by the industry as a tool for studying suhsurface phenomena. Many techniques have been developed and published for determining the capillary pressure and irreducible water. In general, these techniques may be grouped into three classifications. One of the first was the capillary pressure method described by Leverett1 and expanded by Bruce and Welge.4 The experimental results were compared with water saturation of cores obtained using oil-base mud. Thornton and Marshall compared the irreducible water saturation of core samples determined by the capillary pressure method and by salinity and reported good agreement between the two methods. The second classification for determining the irreducible water and capillary pressure may be referred to as the "centrifugal force method." The general technique is similar to the capillary pressure method except that the force driving the reservoir fluid from the sample is of a centrifugal nature. A complete description of this method was presented by J. J. . McCullough and F. W. Albaugh.6 A process, the reverse of the capillary pressure method, was presented by W. R. Purcell.7 Mercury under pressure is driven into the pores of the rock and the saturation of the core determined at each applied pressure. The resulting capillary pressure curve is used to evaluate the irreducible water saturation. The techniques mentioned are singular in their approach to the irreducible water saturation. In all cases. an external force was applied to the core. The forces employed in the evaporation method are the vapor pressure of the liquid causing evaporation, the kinetic diffusion forces. adsorptive forces and. to a lesser degree, the viscous forces resisting flow to the surface. The basic definition of irreducible water is that water held in a state of equilibrium between capillary and hydrostatic forces This water has been described by previous investigators as being held in the microcapillaries too small to support fluid flow. Actually, this fluid volume is made up of the water in the microcapillaries and as a film adhering to the surface of the crystals. All capillaries. therefore, possess some liquid as a film, the thickness of the film being dependent on the properties of the fluid and solid. A discussion of experiments with references pertaining to the measurement of this immobile layer next to the solid surface can be found in the text by J. J. Bikerman.8 Eversole and Lahr calculated the thickness of this layer to be in the order of 10 ' to 10' cm for aqueous solutions and glass. Between two quartz surfaces they found the thickness to be 2 x 10 cm. The work of Volkova, on the capillary movement of water and toluene in quartz grains, indicated the thickness of the Immobile layers to be near 10' cm. Since any measurement is an average value, it is easy to understand that an absolute value would depend on the roughness of the surfaces involved and the complexity of the system. A calculated effective pore radius of 2 x 10 cm is obtained at the, irreducible saturation of a porous media in a water-air system when a capillary pressure of 100 psi is applied. Since the separation of the sand grains is of the same approximate magnitude as the immobile layer.

The number of installations of propeller mine fans completed during the years of 1936 and 1937 is evidence of the increasing popularity of the propeller fan with the American mining industry. During the period from 1931 to 1936, there were several different low-pressure, low-efficiency propeller fans available, which filled a definite need in replacing inefficient centrifugal fans operated at comparatively low pressure by means of purchased power. Since 1936, however, the trend toward the propeller fan has greatly increased, as propeller fans are now available practically without pressure limitations and capable of efficiencies high enough to warrant replacement of efficient centrifugal fans in many instances. Few manufacturers of propeller mine fans base their fan-operating characteristics upon similar test methods, primarily because of inadequate facilities for testing in the factory and the need of a test code incorporating a calibrated duct or nozzle that makes possible the testing of large propeller fans quickly, accurately and without prohibitive expense and space requirements. As a result, fan manufacturers have resorted to various methods for testing large propeller fans in the factory, and different yardsticks have produced uncomparable and often inaccurate performance data. It is the purpose of this paper to describe and discuss in detail the test procedure of the Jeffrey Manufacturing Co., which has been proved both accurate and practical. Fig. 1 shows a plan, a side elevation and two end elevations of the test duct with a propeller fan of the exhaust type in place. Testing propeller fans exhausting permits greater accuracy than testing these fans blowing, because in the former uniform flow conditions are more easily established at Pitot tube stations where fan pressure and air-volume measurements are desired. Any residual rotation remaining in the air discharged from a propeller fan blowing into a test duct must be removed before an attempt is made to obtain accurate pressure and volume readings. Although various devices for straightening the air may be placed between the blowing fan and the volume-measuring station without resulting complications, uniform flow so obtained at the pressure-measuring station necessitates corrective calculations to compensate for duct resistance

At present there are three fields in commercial exploitation in the Argentine. In order of production they are: (1) Comodoro Rivadavia, (2) Salta, (3) Plaza Huincul. Comodoro Rivadavia.—This field is on the coast of the Territory of Chubut in the southern part of the republic. It is being developed and exploited by Yacimientos Petroliferos Fiscales, the government oil entity, and five private companies. The immediate coastal portion of the field, which embraces the original discovery area, is almost completely developed. This is especially true of the original government reserve and one private property. The Y.P.F. has extended its explorations and developments westward to Escalante, 27 km. distant on the state railway. This extension has been the most active and prolific section of the field for the past three years. The government has also continued its exploration drilling in the region lying south of Colonia Sarmiento and east of the Rio Senguer. Private companies have not been able to extend their operations beyond the claims they had in process of acquisition in 1924, when the government reserve areas were established. The Y.P.F. is the major producer of the field and employs modern methods and appliances. Practically all its drilling and pumping operations are electrically operated, from a central power plant. In view of t'he scarcity of water supplies, this facilitates operations and is an economic factor of considerable importance.

The concepts of nucleation and of growth have adequately described the isothermal phase transformations to which they have been applied.ls2 However, these concepts have not yet been used successfully to describe the kinetics of a number of transformations that are not observed to take place isothermally. A typical reaction of this type is the austenite to martensite transformation in steels, for which the new phase appears only during cooling of the parent phase. If the cooling is interrupted, transformation ceases; yet had the cooling continued, transformation would also have continued. Nuclei of a new phase do not leap into existence all at once by the simultaneous cooperation of a large number of atoms or molecules of the parent phase; rather they are formed at finite rates by gaining or losing atoms one at a time from the surrounding materiaL3,4 Further thermo-dynamic considerations require a finite concentration of small transitory nuclei of all unstable phases to exist at equilibrium in a stable phase.= For steel in particular, nuclei of ferrite (a iron) exist at equilibrium in austenite (y iron) at temperatures where austenite is the stable phase. If a high-temperature phase a be cooled sufficiently rapidly from temperature TI above the a-ß equilibrium temperature To, to temperature T-1 below To where ß is the stable phase, the equilibrium distribution of ß nuclei corresponding to the high temperature will be retained. There are two limiting possibilities of particular interest: I. The steady state rate of nucleation of ß may be appreciable at T_1, and may require a concentration of sub-critical nuclei exceeding that retained from the high temperature. Time will be required then for the concentration of nuclei to build up to the steady state value, and an induction period will be observed during which the rate of nucleation will increase to the steady state value. 2. The steady state rate of nucleation of ß may be negligible at T-l, while the critical size for continuous growth of ß nuclei, which decreases with increased subcooling of the a phase, may reach a value so small that some. of the retained high-temperature nu-

A method is presented for evaluating the effect of gravity drive upon the reservoir performance of a high relief pool. Conventional forms of reservoir analysis do not consider the alterations in the basic material balance data caused by gravity segregation of reservoir fluids. A procedure is outlined for structurally weighting physical and chemical data for use in the material balance equation. It is demonstrated how actual pool performance data can be utilized to evaluate the future reservoir performance of a gravity drive pool. INTRODUCTION Conventional reservoir engineering. procedure is inadequate for the analysis of an oil pool which has considerable structural relief, steep dips, and good permeability development. In, pools of this type, gravity drainage has an important part in the movement of oil to the wells and the effects of gravity on the overall pool performance should be included in any analysis of reservoir behavior. Many engineers have the opinion that the force of gravity in the movement of oil is not important until the later life of a pool.' Probably the basis for this belief is that gravitational effects may not be readily discernible until a pool is nearing depletion. This would be especially true for pools not having a high degree of structural relief and permeability development. Actually the effects of gravitational forces are at a maximum when the pool pressure is high, for during this period the hydrostatic head of the oil column is at a maximum and the viscosity of the oil is at a minimum. Oil recoveries from pools having favorable gravity drive characteristics may equal or even exceed recoveries which might be expected from water displacement. Field evidence indicates that in some reservoirs gravity drive has resulted in recoveries greater than that which could have been expected from gas expansion or water drive.'.3 Unfortunately, the possible effects of gravity drive on pool performance have been underestimated and other reasons have been sought to explain the high recoveries obtained. There are unquestionably many reservoirs to which the principles of gravity drainage can be effectively applied. It is the purpose of this paper to illustrate one method whereby gravity drive is included in the reservoir analysis of an oil pool. A hypothetical pool, typical of many California reservoirs, is used as an example. As used in this paper, "gravity drive" is defined as the overall effect of gravitational influences on the recovery of petroleum from the reservoir; "gravitational segregation" as the gravity separation of oil and gas within the reservoir; and "gravity drainage" as the downward movement of oil as caused by the force of gravity. SAND VOLUME DATA Fig. 1 presents a structural contour map of the pool under study. Maximum closure is 1950 feet with dips on the south flank approaching 45". The original gas-oil interface was set at -5200 feet. Average thickness of the producing sand was 200 feet. For use in subsequent calculations ill this paper, the pool was subdivided into 100-foot vertical increments and the sand-volume content of each increment was obtained. If the gross sand thickness is small, under 100 feet, the sand-volume content can be obtained by superimposing an isopachous map upon a structural contour map and planimetering the average thickness of each 100-foot increment. For sand thicknesses over 100 feet, one approacli would be to construct a sufficient number of cross-sections of the pool from which the weighted sand-volume of each 100-foot increment could be obtained. Variations in the sand body with depth, as determined by core data, can also be included in the above process. Table I presents a summary of sand-volume calculations, core data, and the original distribution of reservoir hydrocarbons in the pool. Fig. 2 illustrates the structural distribution of the sand-volume content. A total of 171,398 acre-feet is contained within the productive limits of the pool. Assuming an average porosity of 25% and an interstitial water content of 20%, the original hydrocarbon content was computed to be 227,075,000 barrels. DEPTH-PRESSURE DATA The determination of the initial vertical pressure arrangement in the pool is necessary for PVT and material balance calculations. Whenever sufficient data are available, a plot of pressure versus subsea depth of measurement should be made. From this plot a representative fluid pressure gradient can be established. Lacking sufficient initial pressure data, an initial pressure gradient may he estimated or calculated from avail-

The American literature in the field of dust sampling and analysis has been growing rapidly since 1915. Studies made since that time clearly indicate that there are three fundamental factors that determine the production of lung pathology due to dust inhalation. These are the duration of exposure, the chemical and mineralogic nature of the dust and the concentration of the potentially harmful dust. In the estimation of the amount of the potentially hazardous dust there are essentially three problems involved: (I) a determination of the size of the hazardous dust; (2) determination of the most satisfactory apparatus and technique of sampling, and (3) the most satisfactory method of analysis. A complete study of the literature shows that industrial dust varies ill size from ultramicroscopic particles to those larger than lop in diameter and that relatively few particles are found over 5u in diameter. Approximately 10 to 25 per cent are less than 0.811 in diameter and the median size as a rule is found to lie between 1.25 and 1.75 microns. From the point of view of lung pathology the particle sizes of most importance lie between 0.5 and 5u. Of all the instruments for sampling dust the Impinger apparatus is the only one that will sample a larger body of air satisfactorily with small control errors and high efficiency in both low and high concentrations of dust. The Owens apparatus has the advantage of being more portable and somewhat easier to use but it does riot permit of the sampling of large volumes of air. It has a low efficiency in high concentrations of dust and does not permit dust weights to be obtained. From the point of dust-counting technique the author points out that in 1922 considerable experimentation with dark field and oblique illumination resulted in the conclusion that such methods were not readily duplicated from day to day and therefore yielded somewhat erratic results. THrough the courtesy of Dr. James Douglas I am permitted to give a summary of some of the results obtained in leaching slimes tailings in a series of experiments conducted under my direction at Douglas, Ariz., during the past year. While the test run for which the data are given deals with a particular case, much of the work is general in its application and may therefore be of interest. This work was done upon the ores of the Burro Mountain Copper CO. A description of the geology of the district will be found in the paper by R. E. Somers published in this volume, p. 604. The mineral is pyrite and chalcocite very finely disseminated throughout the gangue and a characteristic of all the ores is the large amount of alumina present. A representative analysis of the particular ore under consideration would be about as follows: Cu, per cent..................... 2.35 S, per cent...................... 3.0 Ag, ounces per ton.............. 0.05 CaO, per cent.................. 0.5 Au............................ The ore would have to be quite finely crushed to liberate the mineral for leaching; concentrating after crushing would cost but a few cents a ton; and a higher total reeovery would result from leaching tailings rather than ore. 2. Rough concentration would yield a suitable material for roasting to make sulphur dioxide or sulphuric acid in connection with the leaching scheme. 3. Such a program put the question of cost vs. recovery on a basis where flotation and discarding of tailings were directly comparable. DURING the wartime rush to prepare the glass necessary for the needs of our army and navy, the problem of the temperature control of the annealing kilns became most serious. The narrow limits of strain allowable (all the specifications called for less internal strain than the average of the previously used German glass) made necessary a very exact procedure and the methods had to be used on a much larger scale than theretofore. At the Charleroi plant of the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co., the members of the staff of the Geophysical Laboratory, which was cooperating with the company, had occasion to study the methods available, and reached a number of conclusions (many of them by no means new except in their application) that may interest and assist those who have to meet similar problems in other fields. The following is a short account of the essential features of the system of temperature control evolved, along with a rather abridged statement of the reasons that led to the adoption or rejection of various schemes.

Conventional resistivity logs consisting of a short normal, a long normal, and one or more long lateral curves do not give data that allow a complete quantitative interpretation in beds thinner than 20 ft. Reservoir rocks usually exhibit zones of continuous homogeneity of quite limited thickness where the long lateral curves become useless because of adjacent bed effects and boundary phenomena. If the beds are 12 ft or thicker, the short and long normals may be used for qualitative interpretation, which can be streamlined by the application of simplified departure curves. For beds of a thickness less than twice the long normal spacing, this procedure breaks down. The combination of the limestone curve, the later-olog or guard electrode log, and the microlaterolog permit quantitative interpretation for beds that are at least 10 ft thick, provided the mud resistivity and the hole diameter are known with sufficient accuracy. For beds thinner than 10 ft, combinations of the microlaterolog with short spaced laterologs and pseudo laterologs appear to be promising. Interpretation of these curves again requires the application of simplified departure curves. Resolution of various possible combinations was analyzed using departure curve data calculated on the Whirlwind I computer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. A field example is shown using the microlaterolog-microlog combination, and the combination of a 6-in. modified laterolog plus a 6-in. pseudo laterolog. INTRODUCTION For the purpose of quantitative interpretation of resistivity logs in porous formations, we want to obtain two essential quantities from the logs, namely, the true resistivity of the undisturbed formation, Rt, and the resistivity of the part of the formation invaded by mud filtrate, Rt. The apparent resistivities of all conventional logging devices are functions of these two parameters and are also influenced by a third unknown parameter, the diameter of the invaded zone, d. It has been shown' that from the normal curves alone it is impossible to arrive at a unique solution for the three unknowns, Rt, R1, and d1. In very thick homogeneous beds, if invasion is not too deep, we can obtain a fair approximation to Rt from the long lateral curves and then use the two normal curves to find Rt and d1 Even under the most favorable conditions, the resolution of this system is not very good. The short normal does not give a reasonable approximation to R1 unless invasion is very deep (dl>16 hole diameters). For very deep invasion, however, the long laterals no longer approximate Rt. For bed thickness between 20 and 40 ft, the long laterals are affected appreciably by the adjacent beds; and the curves are distorted by boundary anomalies to the extent that they lose their quantitative usefulness in most cases. For the same bed thicknesses, the normal curves still function reasonably well. Although it is impossible to find unique solutions Lor R1 and Rt using the normal curves alone, we can obtain a reasonable approximation for the ratio R1/Rt through the use of simplified departure curves. This fact was brought to our attention by A. J. de Witte, geologist with Continental Oil Co. As the magnitude of Rl/Rt is a major clue to the presence of oil in formations, this method can be used to good advantage for qualitative analysis and will be discussed in somewhat greater detail. With the aid of suitable bed thickness corrections, the analysis of the normal curves may be used for bed thicknesses larger than 12 ft. For thinner beds, the method rapidly loses its resolution; and we have to resort to different types of resistivity logs if we want to attempt to analyze the curves quantitatively. The inadequacy of conventional resistivity curves in thin beds is far more serious than generally realized. Fig. 1 shows a conventional E. S. with a 16-in. and 64-in. normal and a 16-ft lateral through a section of Lansing-Kansas City lime, in comparison to a guard electrode survey through the same section in a neighboring well. The porous zones, which show up as low resistivity breaks on the guard electrode log, are completely masked by adjacent bed effects and boundary anomalies on the conventional curves. The ideal pressure-tube is obviously the one which combines the greatest strength with the least weight of material consistent with the uses for which it is designed or employed. The inside of the pipe is the first concern of the engineer. It should be cylindrical, smooth, and of the requisite capacity for the purpose in view. It should be in lengths as great as can be oonveniently handled, so that the couplings may be as few as possible. With the walls of the tube the engineer has no further occasion to concern himself than to make sure they are adequate to carry the internal and external pressures to which they will be subjected. It is as true of a pipe as of a truss, that when it is strong enough to give the requisite factor of safety, nothing is gained by having it stronger. Anything more than this means dead weight, which has to be paid for many times, first as material, and again and again in the costs of transportation and handling, until it reaches its place in the trench or on supports. In use it must be and remain tight against all leakage, and must sustain whatever is placed over or upon it, or suspended from it, without deformation or injury. Finally, in addition to meeting all the immediate requirements of service, it must possess qualities of durability which warrant a reasonable expectation of a long life of usefulness. The wise engineer no longer regards it as reasonable to depend upon mere bulk of its own material for the protection of a metal as readily impaired or destroyed by oxidation as iron or steel. The metal must have a coating which will be and remain impervious and indestructible. When all these conditions are met, we have as near an approach to the ideal tube as can be attained with the materials now available for their manufacture. Steel wed constructively, to the best advantage, meets these requirements most perfectly. Gold alone would do it better. If we search through the whole list of metals and alloys we find nothing available which so perfectly meets the requirements as a pipe material as steel. (communication to the Secretary*). -It is much to he regretted that in presenting a further discussion of these deposits, first described by myself' and later discussed by C. M. Weld,2 Mr. Wang bas not made a more complete presentation of the evidence on which he bases his conclusions as to their origin. Mr. Weld said in his paper that his visit was confined to a few hours, that he saw only one of the several exposures, and that he took away no samples for further study. My own visit was brief, and for another purpose than the study of the geological features of 'the deposits, so the fact that Mr. Weld described as a hornblende-granite the rock which I described as a "dark gray syenitic rock," and which Mr. Wang identifies as a hornblende-syenite, seems of no great importance, since this rock is generally decomposed along the contact, presumably the only place in which Mr. Weld observed it. Later in the same paper (p. 31), Mr. Weld says that his opinion is that the magnetite of the deposits is primary, but Mr. Wang makes no mention of this in stating his own conclusion to the same effect. When Mr. Weld's paper appeared, I did not discuss it, because, although I considered the evidence- that he brought forward to support his belief that the magnetite is primary too slender to support the hypothesis, my own evidence to the contrary was equally tenuous. .The opportunities for observation and study open to Mr. Wang must have provided him with

Less than two years ago, the, Congress, with broad bipartisan support, passed the Energy Security Act of 1980. A decade marked by ten- fold increases in world oil prices and two major interruptions in oil flows from the Middle East had ended. An all-out national commitment to transform America's vast tar sands, oil shale and coal resources into conventional fuels had begun. The national synfuels effort was to be public-private cooperation at a scale unmatched in peace time. Private industry would own and operate the synthetic fuels facilities. Government would reduce market uncertainties to acceptable levels. The potential government commitment was substantial. Up to $88 billion would be available through the Synthetic Fuels Corporation, principally in the form of contingent financing. Billions more would be spent through Department of Energy programs. Additional incentives for alternate energy development were contained in the Energy Tax Act of 1978. The Energy Security Act clearly specified national synthetic fuels production objectives: 500,000 barrels per day by 1987 -- 2 million barrels per day by 1992. Finally, said Congress, Uncle Sam was going to do something about rapidly rising oil prices, uncertainties of energy supply, and the resulting disruption to the U. S. economy. Simply put, the purpose of the Energy Security Act of 1980 was to provide government guarantees sufficient to get synthetic fuels projects off the private sector drawing boards and into commercial production. Because of their huge cost, technological uncertainty, and lengthy pay-out period, these projects were always second place to projects of smaller size, known technology and more rapid pay-out. The Energy Security Act was the legal expression of public policy to bring the free-market synfuels timetable into line with the faster paced political timetable in the interest of national energy security.

The importance of magnesium alloys in the manufacture of aircraft engines has been realized for many years. A concentrated effort has been exerted in the laboratories of the Dow Chemical Co. to develop magnesium-base alloys with improved properties at elevated temperatures whereby greater advantage can be taken of the inherent lightness of these materials. In an earlier publication, attention was called to the superior tensile properties and resistance to creep of cerium-containing magnesium alloys at temperatures up to 700°F. More recently, additional data on magnesium-cerium alloys have been furnished by Murphy and Payne. The present paper deals with the mechanical properties of sand-cast magnesium alloys containing zinc, at temperatures up to 500°F. The study includes binary Mg-Znt alloys containing up to 10 pct zinc and several ternary and some polynary alloys based on the Mg-~Zn,f Mg-jZn, Mg-4.4211, Mg-6Zn, and Mg-roZn binaries. The compositional variation in the tensile properties, hardness, and creep at room and elevated temperatures, and in the electrical conductivity at room temperature has been determined. The results of these tests show that many zinc-containing magnesium alloys exhibit resistance to creep at elevated temperatures significantly higher than that of present commercial magnesium alloys, but lower than that of alloys of the magnesium-cerium type. In addition, they have high tensile properties at room and elevated temperatures and high conductivity. This combination of mechanical properties and conductivity indicates that these alloys should be given serious consideration for commercial applications involving exposure to temperatures higher than those to which present commercial magnesium alloys can be taken safely. Literature The properties of sand-cast magnesium alloys containing zinc as a principal alloying element have not been investigated very extensively, especially at elevated temperatures. The following remarks, which are confined to sand-cast alloys, will serve as a summary of the most important references on this phase of magnesium metallurgy. The first recorded determination of the tensile strength of binary Mg-Zn alloys as a function of zinc content was reported by Aitchison. Similar studies, including the measurement of elongation and hardness, have been performed by Gann and Winston,' Dumas and Rockaert, Haugh-ton and Prytherch,6 and by Spitaler, the last being reported by Beck.'
