THE data of Chaudron,1 Tonosaki,2 and Collins³ on the thermodynamic properties of MOO, disagree widely. These authors, by using essentially similar methods, studied the following reaction: 1/2MoO2(s) + H2(g) == i/2Mo(s) + Ph,o H2O(g),K = —----- [1] Ph2 Tonosaki used a vacuum system consisting of a furnace containing MOO, and a water saturator whose temperature was kept at 25 °C with a thermostat. After repeated evacuation, hydrogen was admitted slowly into the system. The experiments were based upon the fact that at a constant furnace temperature and constant partial pressure of water, the total pressure of gas mixture over MOO? + Mo is constant. Any attempt to vary the pressure by external forces would vary only the amounts of MoO2, and Mo, after which the pressure should return to the equilibrium value in accordance with the equilibrium constant of reaction 1. The actual value of K was determined from the total equilibrium pressure (sum of Ph2o + Ph2) at each temperature. The total pressure of gas was varied within the range of 80.2 to 125.4 mm Hg, within a temperature range of 645" to 823 °C. The results were summarized as log K = 0.9413 — 1444.6/T for reaction 1. The ratio of H2O/H2 was considered to be uniform in spite of the presence of a thermal gradient across the static gas phase. It was shown by Rosenqvist and Cox,' however, that in somewhat similar circumstances the error resulting from thermal diffusion may be large. Collins³ improved Tonosaki's method by attempting to avoid thermal diffusion errors. His equilibrium data were obtained at 700°, 800°, and 900° C, and the result for reaction 1 was expressed as log K = 1.258 — 1822/T. The purpose of this investigation was to study reaction 1, avoiding the thermal diffusion errors, and to obtain equilibrium data in a considerably wide temperature range for the reliable extrapolation of the resulting thermodynamic functions. Experimental Procedure The diagram of the apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. Tank hydrogen was passed through a tube containing platinized asbestos at 425 °C in order to convert a trace of oxygen into water vapor. The flow rate was carefully controlled with a capillary-type flow-meter B and a bubbling column D. The gas was then presaturated sufficiently at P and led into a condenser system immersed in a thermostat, controlled to within ±0.002C. The temperature of the thermostat was measured with a thermometer calibrated against a certified standard. The temperature of P was adjusted to avoid the condensation of unduly large amounts of water as judged from the rate of flow out of the capillary tube M. Argon was purified by passing it through magnesium chips kept at 630°C. After passing through the flowmeter B', it was mixed with moist hydrogen emerging from the thermostat. The resulting gas mixture was then led into the hot zone of the furnace through the heated glass tubing and the silica tube S, thus insuring the same ratio of PII2o/Ph2 from the condenser to the reaction chamber, thus avoiding thermal diffusion. The entire gas system was of all-glass construction, except at the magnesium train. The furnace comprised a glazed alumina tube over which a 15-in. platinum coil was wound. The lower end of the alumina tube was tightly closed with a brass bottom and a silicone rubber gasket, and the upper end with two glass disks, each with a hole of 1/16 in. in diameter, through which the gas mixture escaped into the atmosphere. A back-up coil of kanthal wire facilitated the temperature control of the furnace. A coil of annealed molybdenum strip of 99.99 pct purity, 0.005 in. thick and 0.050 in. wide, and weighing 17 g was hung in the furnace with a 0.010-in. platinum wire attached to one end of a sensitive analytical balance. The temperature of the furnace was measured with a Pt-Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouple checked against a standard. The experimental procedure consisted of heating the gas purification trains, adjusting the gas flow rates, attaining a constant thermostatic temperature, flushing the entire system for 2 hr while heating the furnace to well above the expected equilibrium temperature and then cooling it at a rate of 0.3°C per min during which time the change in the weight of molybdenum was observed on the balance. For a given thermostatic temperature, i.e., a constant Prr,o/Px,, molybdenum oxidized upon cooling slightly below the equilibrium temperature. The procedure was then repeated by heating the furnace and thus reaching a temperature slightly above the equilibrium value. The average of the two temperatures, differing by 2" to 3"C, was considered to be the true equilibrium temperature. A study has been made to deter~r~irre how the behavior of a water drivee reservoir changes as a function of the permeability of the formation and as a function of the size of the aquifer. The effect of pressure maintenance programs on the rote of nat11rn1 water influx is also studied, (IS well as the influence on the influx of the position of water injection we1ls with reference to the oil-water contact. The results are determined by the use of an electrical reservoir analyzer and are plotted as families of curves of pressure, natural water influx, and water injection vs time or cumulalive production. Two size aquifers are studided. One is limited with a 36-inile radius, and the, other approximates an infinite reservoir. The field remains the same in all respects for the completed. study except that the permeability is changed to agree with that assumed for the aquifer. 1 N TR ODUCTI ON this study was undertaken in -dcr to determine how the pres- sure decline and water influx of a water drive field would change as a function of the rate of fluid withdrawals, as a function of the permeability of the formation, and as a function of the size of the aquifer. The effect of pressure maintenance programs on the rate of natural water influx was also studied as was the position of water injection wells with reference to the oil-water contact. The information has been determined by the use of an electrical reservoir analyzer1, sometimes referred to as a Carter type analyzer. This instrument is an analog type computer which can be set up to represent a water-drive oil field. It can reproduce the past performance of the field in terms of analogous electrical quantities when the proper circuit analog of resistors and condensers has been determined, also, it can determine the future behavior for any method of production which may be selected, or permit the comparison among several different methods. Although most applications of the reservoir analyzer"" have been to thc study of specific field performance, it is intended to use the analyzer here to help understand how various reservoir characteristics effect the final performance of the field and to sec under what conditions water injection will be of benefit and to what extent. Within the oil industry the performance of water-drive reservoirs was first described analytically by LV. Hurst' and M. Muskat2 for certain types of boundary conditions. The solutions of the equations developed involved products of exponential functions and Bessel functions. Later publications by Hurst4 and van Ever-clingen" and the hooks of Muskat6 gave further information on reservoirs with other boundary conditions. They also presented rather extensive curves and tables to help evaluate the analytical expressions involved. A rccent series of publications by Chatas. bascd on the work of Hurst and van Everdingen, gives quite complete charts and tables of data to evaluate the pressure decline or water influx in infinite or limited radial reservoirs. and in linear reservoirs. The curves in all of these publications are given in dimensionless form

A matter of much concern at present to the coal-mining industry of Great Britain is the effect of the working of the Coal Mines Act, 1930. This Act, which received the Royal Assent on Aug. 1, 1930, contains five parts: (1) production, supply and sale of coal; (11) the reorganization of the coal-mining industry; (111) hours of work; (IV) the Coal Mines National Industrial Board; (V) general. The first three parts are of major interest and discussion can be confined to them. Part I.—Production, Supply and Sale of Coal Under Part I of the Coal Mines Act, 1930, provision is made for central and district schemes to regulate the production, supply and sale of coal by the fixation of standard tonnage, quota and minimum prices. By Nov. 1, 1930, all the district schemes came into force with the exception of that for Scotland, where the majority of the coal-owners did not see their way to accept the amendments to their draft scheme demanded by the Mines Department. A compulsory scheme for Scotland was thereupon prepared by the Mines Department and put into force on Nov. 24, 1930. It is administered by the coal-owners of the district. The essence of the schemes is the allocation of tonnage for each district by a Central Council, and the allocation of quota for each pit in a district by an Executive Board for that district. Up to Dec. 31, 1930, the various bodies of coal-owners engaged in administering the schemes were employed in work preliminary to their full operation. Standard tonnages had to be determined and coals had to be classified. In consequence, it was not found possible to put the regulation of output into force until Jan. 1, 1931. The determination of minimum prices proved to be an even longer process, and only in a few districts were minimum price schedules operative during the first quarter of this year. The working of the schemes during the March quarter, 1931, has been reviewed in an official publication by the Mines Department,' which can be summarized as follows:

A downdraft traveling grate process to agglomerate pelletized iron ore concentrates has been successfully demonstrated in a pilot plant at Carrollville, Wis. Work there followed several years of development in the Allis-Chalmers Mfg. Co. laboratories, and the pilot plant phase was carried out in co-operation with Arthur G. McKee & Co., consultants and engineers to the iron and steel industry. End result of the process is conversion of iron ore concentrates into a form which can easily be transported and smelted in the blast furnace.

IN THE first report1 disks of steel of- known composition and history were exposed, under carefully prescribed conditions, to impacts of explosion products resulting from the explosion of 50-gm. charges of explosives having well-determined rates of detonation, or to, impacts of a weight of known mass, falling through measured distances. There were available at the Bureau of Mines Experiment Station five explosives, having rates of detonation of 5716, 4470, 3190, 2296, and 1523 meters per second. It being desired to continue this exposure downward, and no explosives with a lesser rate of detonation being at hand, resort was had to the impact of a falling weight, the differences in the velocity of impact being attained by varying the height from which the weight was allowed to fall. It was expected by this means to demonstrate experimentally that the development of Neumann bands was determined by the suddenness of the deformation of the metal in which they were produced. But while progressive deformations were obtained with the explosive charges, the falling-weight method failed because the tup was progressively deformed, also the disks were so flattened as to be unfit for metallographic examination. A return, therefore, has been made to the use of explosives as the source of energy, an air-gap being interposed between the charge of explosive and the disk, as the effect diminishes as the function of the distance between the charge and the object on which the products of its explosion, or the shock wave from its detonation, impinge. The details of the arrangement of the tests by the air-gap method were the same as those described by Foley and Howell,2 except that after the system had been set up and the desired apparent specific gravity for the explosive

Colloidal silica dissolved in aqueous suspensions of high surface area thoria was permitted to adsorb on the thoria surface. Silica in three forms was identified by means of infrared spectroscopy and characterized by Si-O vibrational modes in the 9.0 to 10.5 region. A band at 9. 1 was attributed to free unad-sorbed silica, while adsorbed silica resulted in bands of greatest absorbency at 9.4 or 10.3p, depending upon the character of the surface bonding. Size considerations, the amount of silica adsorbed, and the character of the infrared spectrum for strongly adsorbed silica has been interpreted as evidence of formation of chain or layer silica linkages on the thoria surface. Infrared spectroscopy has been used successfully in recent years for the identification of minerals and synthetic inorganic substances. Unfortunately, infrared studies of silicate minerals have not proceeded to the point that unambiguous assignments may be made for Si-O vibrational modes as affected by lattice substitutions and structures. Several investigators have presented infrared spectra of silicate minerals, 1,7 and their work has pointed to the potential value of infrared to identify minerals as well as to note the sensitivity of various Si-O modes to structural and substitutional environments. The strong infrared absorption of various Si-O vibrational modes makes the infrared method a very useful tool for the study of silica adsorbed on the surface of solids of high surface area. Spaepen et a18 studied the adsorption of silica on thoria surfaces from aqueous solutions of silicic acid up to 300°C. A general review of the application of the infrared method to the study of surface adsorption has been presented by Pliskin and Eischens.9 EXPERIMENTAL Du Pont colloidal silica, Ludox SM (16.36% SiO2) and Ludox HS (30.25% SiO2) in aqueous suspensions were used as the sources of silica for the adsorption studies. The thoria used for this study was supplied by Union Carbide Nuclear Co.* under the preparation *Chemical Technology Div., Union Carbide Nuclear Co., Oak Ridge, Tenn. . number D-16-650. It was fired from the oxalate at 650°C and had a surface area of 32.4 ± 0.6 m2 per g measured by nitrogen adsorption. The chemical analysis of the D-16 thoria in ppm was: CO3= (5500), NO3- (< 4), so4±PO4 (100), and Si (20). The Ludox silica was placed in contact with the thoria in a two-liter autoclave10 between room temperature and 250°C. Slurries were made by placing 1 g of thoria in one liter of distilled water containing various additions of the silica sol. Samples were removed from the autoclave by opening a small stainless steel valve. Extracted samples were centrifuged for 10 min and excess solution was decanted. The sample was then dried for several hours at 80°C. Infrared samples were prepared by thoroughly mixing 10 mg of the thoria with 400 mg KBr in polystyrene vials on a "Wig-L-Bug" amalgamator. It is the purpose of this note to report the crystal-lographic data for nine new B5A compounds* having the Cu5Ca structure, with A a rare earth and B a transition element, Co, Ni or Cu. In previous papers, some magnetic data1 and preparation and crystallo-graphic data2 for other B5A compounds having the same structure have been reported. Crystallographic data for these compounds are shown in Tables I and 11. These results are in agreement with others of this series reported previously by Wernick and ~eller.&apos; The abnormally large atomic volume of Yb metal3 is not manifested in Ni,Yb, when one compares it with the compounds reported here and the data of reference 2. This is not true for the compound YbAl,, having the cubic Laves structure (MgCuz), to be discussed in other papers.4&apos;5 Thus, it appears that Yb has a valence of 3; i.e., the 2 s and Id electrons are lost to the conduction band.4&apos;5 Lattice constants for four of these compounds prepared by levitation melting have been reported by Nassau, Cherry, and wallace.&apos; The lattice constants

This paper surveys a few of the quantitative exploration models that might be of interest to an ex-plorationist seeking to apply methods of operations research to mineral exploration. A general development of each model is presented, and the model is evaluated relative to the exploration activity. Finally, a philosophy of exploration and mineral resources is presented, and a possible exploration strategy incorporating concepts of some of these models consistent with this philosophy is proposed. The high cost of conducting an effective exploration program has generated an increasing interest in methods of optimizing the allocation of the resources of a firm engaged in mineral exploration. As a step towards this, mathematical models have been formulated which are designed to quantify those variables of mineral exploration in such a manner that they can be integrated with all phases of the firm&apos;s operations so as to optimize its profit objective. QUANTITATIVE MODELS General: Exploration models express at least two concepts: mineral occurrence and effectiveness of search. In simplest terms, an exploration model might be formulated mathematically as follows: P(X) = F(X) . G(X), where P(X) = the unconditional probability of discovery of X deposits, F(X) = the probability of occurrence of X deposits, and G(X) = the probability of discovery of X deposits, conditional upon their existence in the search area. With these general models as a basis of reference, some of the specific exploration models are examined below. The Allais Model: DEVELOPMENT - M. Allaisl performed the first study in which a philosophy of exploration was formulated into a probability framework. His objective was to estimate the economic profitability of the exploration of the Algerian Sahara. Allais divided the Algerian Sahara into blocks of land (called cells) 10 km square and defined the random variable, X, as the number of mining districts per cell. Thus, F(X) would describe the probability of 1, 2, or n mining districts occurring within any cell of the search area. Allais reasoned that his best information as to the form of the distribution, F(X), was the number of mining districts per cell that had been found in well explored areas in the world, such as the Western States of the U.S. He found that the Poisson function produced a reasonably good fit to the distribution of districts in these explored areas: where? is a parameter, such as the average number of districts per cell. In mid-November, a long awaited announcement was made by John Drybrough, President of Granduc Mines Ltd. In short, he said that the extensive exploration conducted by his company and its parent organization, Newmont Mining Corp., have indicated the feasibility of a commercial copper mining operation at the company&apos;s prospect located slightly north of Stewart, B.C., and just east of the Alaskan Panhandle. The financing of the project is now being planned. SUMMARY OF PROJECT Granduc reasonably assured ore reserves are estimated at 32,510,000 tons averaging 1.93% copper content before dilution, of which 20,670,000 tons averaging 2.08;:; copper content are situated above the proposed mine access tunnel at elevation 2475 above sea level. The life of the reserves at the planned rate of production is 13 1/2 years. The probability of finding substantial additions to these present reserves is considered good.

IN the representation of crystals by figures it is customary to draw their edges as if they were projected upon some definite plane. Two sorts of projection are use8; the ah- graphic in which the lines of projection fell at right angles and the chirographic where they fall at oblique angles upon the plane of projection. The second of these projections is the more important, and must be tr2atcd here in some detail. Two points are to be noted in regard to it. In the first place, in the drawings of crystals the point of view is supposed to be at an infinite distance, and it follows from this that all lines which are parallel on the crystal appear parallel in the drawing. In the second place, in all ordinary cases, it is the complete ideal crystal which is represented, that is, the crystal with its full geometrical symmetry as explained on pp. 10 to 13 (cf. note on p. 13). In general, drawings of crystals are made, either by constructing the figure upon a projection of its crystal axes, using the intercepts of the different faces upon the axes in order to determine the directions of the edges or by constructing the figure from the gnomonic (or stereographic) projection of the crystal forms. Both of these methods have their advantages and disadvantages. By drawing the crystal figure by the aid of a projection of its crystal axes the symmetry of the crystal and the relations of its faces to the axes are emphasized. In many cases, however, drawing from a projection of the poles of the crystal faces is simpler and takes less time. The student should be able to use both methods and consequently both are described below.

WHILE the yield stress of solution treated Fe-Cu alloys increases rapidly with aging, a precipitate has only been directly observed in overaged samples.&apos;-" This precipitate is essentially pure fcc copper, the E phase. Hornbogen2 suggested that the initial hardening is due to clustering of copper atoms in a bcc iron matrix. Hornbogen was not able to obtain direct confirmation for such bcc clusters by either X-ray diffraction or electron microscopy; however, he did observe analogous clustering in Fe-Au alloys7 where the scattering factor difference between iron and gold is more favorable than that for iron and copper. Fujii, Nemoto, Suto, and Monma4 recently observed diffuse electron diffraction scattering in a 2.5 pct Cu alloy aged at 500°C: for 30 hr. They suggested that part of the diffuse SCattering was due to a modulated structure of 26 to 42 wavelength parallel to the (110) matrix plane. This disappeared with further aging. However, 30 hr at 500°C is well beyond the peak strengthening in this alloy which occurred at less than I hr at 500oc.4 By transmission electron microscopy they could not distinguish between quenched samples and samples aged to maximum strength. The purpose of the present investigation was to try to obtain further confirming evidence for a precipitation stage preceding the formation of the fcc E phase. Change in Young&apos;s modulus was selected for study be- EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The Fe-1.67 at. pct Cu alloy was supplied by the U.S. Steel Corporation in the form of a hot forged rectangular bar. The carbon and nitrogen contents of this alloy were 70 ppm and less than 10 ppm, respectively. The samples for Young&apos;s modulus measurements were made by cold swaging to & in. diam and cutting to 2 in. lengths. Tensile test samples 1 in. long were prepared by cold rolling to a thickness of 0.012 in. and then machining to gage dimensions of 0.5 by 0.012 in. For Mijssbauer studies, foils 1 mil thick were prepared by cold rolling. During fabrication the alloy was given intermediate anneals at 845OC followed by quenching. The specimens after preparation were solution treated at 1000°C (y field) or 845°C (a field) for 1 to 2 and 5 to 6 hr, respectively, in a dynamic vacuum of about 2 x lom6 torr. The tensile and modulus specimens were drop-quenched into iced brine through an aluminum foil which vacuum-sealed the bottom of the furnace tube. The MOssbauer foils were drop-quenched into helium gas cooled by passing through N2 (liq) in a copper coil. The grain diameter of the modulus and tensile specimens was between 0.025 and 0.035 mm. The samples were aged from 400" to 500°C in a dynamic vacuum of 2 x 10-6 torr and cooled by pulling into a water-cooled portion of the vacuum system. The dynamic Young&apos;s modulus was measured at room temperature using electrostatic excitation and detection of longitudinal vibrations.&apos; Neglecting any length change during the aging, (this is expected to be comparatively small), the fractional change of Young&apos;s modulus (?Et)/Eav, is equal to twice the fractional change of the resonant frequency (?ft)/fav . ?ft =ft —fo where fo and ft are the resonant frequencies of a specimen before aging and after aging to time t. The measured f&apos;s, approximately 51,000 cps, were corrected to 25°C for any variation in the ambient temperature. The tensile tests reported were carried out at room temperature in an Instron with a 1000 lb full scale load cell. The flow stress reported herein corresponds to a strain of 0.002. The Massbauer spectra were taken in a constant acceleration model AM-1 NSEC spectrometer. The

The state of Michigan showed considerable activity during 1935. The center of greatest interest was the Crystal field, which was unknown until March, 1935, and is an illustration of the effect of the unknown and unexpected on Michigan oil development. The fields of the state (Fig. 1) produced a total of 15,770,000 bbl. of oil in 1935, or about 5 million more than in 1934. In order to keep up this production 307 new oil wells were drilled, of which 88 were in the Crystal area, which produced 3,600,000 bbl. This field had a rapid development and reached its peak in October. Since that time increasing water encroachment has caused a rapid decline. The pay horizon at the top of the Monroe dolomite is only a few feet thick. Big producers were offset by dry holes or small wells. The discovery well, which was in section 11, Crystal township, Montcalm County, was drilled March 28, 1935. Its initial production was 5000 bbl. per day, and up to Dec. 31, 1935, had produced 350,000 bbl. of oil—dose to one-tenth of the total production of the field to that date. The Beaverton field, which was discovered at the close of 1934, did not develop rapidly. Four small producers were finished in the Dundee lime during the year. West Branch was active and at the end of the year had 97 producers, 72 of which were drilled during 1935. Most of the wells produce from the Dundee lime; a few are finished in the Traverse. The Birch Run field deserves special mention, for it is the one area where consistent production continues to be found in the Berea sand at about 1500 ft. Wells are small, 20 now producing a total of about 300 bbl. per day of oil of fine quality. The old Central Michigan producing area, extending from Nit,. Pleasant through Yost to Porter, continued to be the principal producing area of the state and accounted for 10,370,000 bbl. from 660 producing wells. Ninety-three new wells were drilled in this territory. The Porter field, at the southeast end of this producing trend, was outstanding from the standpoint of production. The old Leaton field of Isabella County added several new producers. Its production was greater than in 1934.

One of the best known of the early mining districts of Nevada was that at Eureka, where gold was first produced in 1864. While the most productive period for the district was during the early 1900s, production was maintained until World War II. During this time it is said that the Eureka district produced as much as $200 million from over 3,200 km (2,000 miles) of tunnels and workings. The Windfall Mine was discovered in 1902; and a 100 ton cyanide plant was operated there during the periods 1907 to 1912 and 1932 to 1940. Since 1974, however, Windfall Venture has been operating a unique heap leaching facility on the site of the old Windfall Mine. Gold at the Windfall occurs primarily in the Cambrian Hamburg dolomite which has been "sanded" and in which the original cementing material has been destroyed. The gold is micron sized and is accompanied by anomalous amounts of arsenic and mercury; however, the ore is low in base metals which distinguishes it from the typical Eureka district ores. Mining the ore causes it to break down into very fine sizes, approximately 50% minus 150 microns (100 mesh). Conventional heap leaching by spraying proved to be impossible; and extensive test work on alternate methods, aided by the United States Bureau of Mines, was conducted using 9 m (30 ft) high columns and then large tonnage heaps. The leaching procedure adopted was to build 10.6 m (35 ft) high heaps on a 50 mm (2 in.) asphalt pad covered with a layer of gravel for drainage assisted by perforated pipe drains and gravel-packed sumps. A berm is constructed around the top of each pad and cyanide solution is allowed to “pond” on top of the heap. The resulting percolation is at the rate of 24 liters per sq m per hr (0.6 gal per sq ft per hr), a figure about 2.4 times the average used in other heap leaching operations. The dolomite furnishes its own protective alkalinity and no lime or caustic is used in the solution which contains 0.4 kg per mt (0.8 lb per st) of NaCN. Pregnant solution from the heaps averages about 0.7 g Au per mt (0.02 oz per st) with a cyanide content of about 0. 2 kg per mt (0.4 lb per st) and a pH of plus 9. Addition of NaCN brings the pH of the leach solution up to 11 to 12. Carbon adsorption of the gold was originally done in six enclosed columns mounted in a trailer but five conventional columns have been substituted as the size of the operations has increased. Between March and June 1962, the privilege of holding a Carnegie Corporation Fellowship enabled R. A. L. Black to travel extensively in the northeastern and western U.S. and in Canada, seeing mining schools, mining research establishments and a cross-section of the American and Canadian mining industry. Visits were paid to 12 university mining schools, 7 research establishments and 19 mining operations. The author had previously spent two months in Britain in a similar manner and eventually returned to his home in South Africa after a short period studying mining problem in Australia. Thus, although the following remarks are mainly concerned with the educational problems of mining in North America, a comparison of impressions of American and Canadian conditions could be made with impressions gained from first-hand experience of other mining centers in the English-speaking world. The conclusion was reached that the problems and conditions of mining, research and mining education are very similar in all areas visited.

Photogrammetrists are studying with new interest the problems of mine mapping and mining engineers are beginning to see what photogrammetry can do for them. Administrators in a number of European and U. S. mines have tried photogram- metric methods and are finding that better maps and data, needed for mine development, can be produced with savings of time, men, and money. In addition to wide use in small scale mapping projects, photogrammetric methods are now used for producing large scale plans and maps in German coal and lignite mines, in some U. S. open pit mines, to inventory TVA coal stock piles, and to compute highway excavation volumes. In each case surveying and map compilation has been made more efficient and accurate by photogrammetry and at significant savings over ground methods.
