DEVELOPMENT of the lime industry in Ste, Genevieve County began in a crude way in 1840. According to information furnished by the Missouri Bureau of Geology, in the early days small vertical kilns built of stone were used, and wood was the fuel. Modern development began in 1904 when one company introduced steel shells lined with firebrick. Within a few years two more companies erected similar plants, and in 1925 a fourth company began operations. Thus there are today four lime companies at Ste. Genevieve, all operating at high capacity and with a gradually increasing production. GEOLOGY The limestone of Ste. Genevieve County, which has the chemical composition and purity required for lime burning, is the upper 80 or 90 ft. of Spergen formation. The Missouri Bureau of Geology, in its geological map of Ste. Genevieve County, gives the Spergen formation a total thickness of 160 ft., but only the upper portion is pure enough for lime burning, with an average raw-stone analysis of 98.7 per cent CaCO3; 0,35 Si02; 0,3 R203; 0.35 MgCO3; 0.3 SO3. The Spergen, one member of the Meramac group, Iowa series, of the Mississippian system, underlies an area approximately 12 miles long north and south, by 5 miles wide east and west (Fig. 1) in Ste. Genevieve County. The entire eastern two-thirds of Ste. Genevieve County is sedimentary, the formations dipping gently toward the east on an average grade of about 4 per cent, or 2 ½ °. Thus the outcrops of the various sedimentaries run approxi-mately north and south. A line running west from Ste. Genevieve crosses the outcrops of the sedimentaries, ranging from the top of the Mississippian to the Ozarkian geological system in a space of 12 miles. During the recent great depression in iron, little has been done in the magnetic separation of iron-ores; and previous to the present decade the art was in its infancy, so that there were few, if any, successful separators on the market, and but scanty practical data could be obtained as to the industry itself. Moreover, the recent development of the great Mesabi Bessemer beds, coincident with the intense depression in business, has discouraged active attempts to solve the problems presented in the crushing and separation of the refractory magnetites of the South. Experiments have been carried on, however, upon a practical scale in separating these ores magnetically, at the well-known Cranberry mines, in Mitchell county, N. C., with results which are encouraging. The magnetites of the Blue Ridge, in the South, have been known, and the soft ores of the region have been used in Catalan forges, since very early times. The original settlements in East Tennessee were made along the Watauga river by Daniel Boone, William Bean, John Sevier, and other stalwart pioneers; and this valley lies parallel with the " Cranberry " lead, which is undoubtedly the most celebrated and the most extensive deposit of workable magnetic ore in the Southern States. Studies of the phase structure, critical current density, and resistive critical magnetic field of a 45 pct Nb-55 pct Zr superconducting alloy after final-size heat treatments are reported in this paper. A combination of optical metallography, X-ray diffraction, and electrical-resistivity measurements were used to determine the phase structure. Superconductivity measurements, made with heat-treated wires, are correlated with microstructure. Although no quantitative relationship between microstructure and critical current density is found, it is shown that SINCE Kunzler1 as well as Berlincourt, Hake, and Leslie2 first described the high-field, high-current-density superconductivity of Nb-Zr alloys, it has be- the critical current density is highest when the microstructure is finely divided by fibering, coring, precipitation, or fine-scale phase dispersions. The resistive critical field is very sensitive to the compositions of the phases present. Since the alloy investigated here is near the maximum resistive critical field for the Nb-Zr system, any phase decomposition results in a lower H,. Elimination of the effects of cold work lowers H, also. A possible interpretation of the latter in terms of internal surface superconductivity is suggested. come apparent that the resistive critical field and the current-carrying capacity of such alloys are, in large measure, dependent on composition and processing. Recent experiments indicate that the usual type of concen-trating-table is not only poorly adapted to produce the desired results, but also is based upon an incorrect principle, namely, the use of riffles to perform the work of stratifying the various minerals. We have heard a good deal about riffles for concentratiug-tables; exhaustive experiments have been made to discover the proper form of riffle, or to prove the superiority of this or that form; disputes and patent-litigation have arisen over the matter of riffles, and thus marly have been led to believe that the riffle is the saving-device upon which the process of concentration depends. In the present paper it is proposed to show that the riffle is greatly overrated as to the part it performs in the concentration of minerals, and that, in the near future, it may possibly be eliminated entirely from that process. The experiments in question have shown that the troublesome riffle can be considered of secondary importance at the most, and should be so classed in the construction of a concen-trating-table built upon the right lines. The action of any form of riffle on a concentrating-table is such as to upset and retard the process of settling and stratifying the various minerals on the table-deck. From the deck of a riffled table no concentrates can be delivered until the deck is " bedded," that is, until a suffcient amount of metallic values has been fed to the table to spread over a large portion of the deck, forming a substratum of the heavier minerals. This substratum must be maintained by the feed within quite narrow limits, and directly proportional to the rate of discharge from the table, in order that the bed shall not be lost. On the other hand, the riffles having a very limited carrying-capacity, considerable care must be taken not to overfeed a riffled table, in which case the table proceeds, in mill parlance, to rob itself. The slip and twinning behavior in extended titanium crystals were studied in some detail. The formation and appearance of coarse kink bands are discussed. Their crystallographic geometry was determined by X-ray analysis. A phenomenological interpretation of the complexities in kink band development is also presented. The critical resolved shear stress, coefficient of shear hardening, and plane of fracture were determined for several crystals extended at room temperature. THE slip and twinning elements observed in the room-temperature deformation of titanium were enumerated in a previous paper1 in which considerations were advanced regarding the nature and selection of these elements and their effect on the known mechanical properties of this metal. The present study concerns the crystallographic, microscopic, and mechanical aspects of flow in relation to the slip and twinning elements, and includes a prediction of slip systems, nature of slip and twin markings, inhomogeneities of plastic flow, and stress-strain characteristics. Unless otherwise noted, arc-melted titanium sponge (99.77 pct) was used in these experiments. The method of production of crystals, their dimensions, and the surface preparation for micrographic examination have been reported.&apos; For obtaining stress-strain characteristics, only those crystals which traversed the entire width of the specimen and were at least 8 mm in length were used. Tensile deformation of the crystals was performed with conventional grips for sheet specimens and a constant-stress loading beam, designed after the method of Andrade and Chalmers.&apos; The specimens were loaded by allowing sand to flow from a reservoir into a bucket suspended from the longer end of a balanced 6:1 lever arm at a rate controlled to load the specimen approximately 2 kg per min. Strain measurements were made using the Baldwin SR-4, bonded, resistance-wire strain gage, Type A-8, which permitted a reading accuracy of 2 microinches per inch. The formulas used in the evaluation of shear stress and shear strain, as in deriving the coefficient of shear hardening, are given by Schmid and Boasv n terms of the original orientation and change in length of the crystal. For calculating the critical resolved shear stress, the standard equation was used. The crystallographic nature of the unpredictable slip observed in a number of specimens was determined by the single-surface X-ray method of analysis as described in ref. 1. Experimental Results Prediction of Slip System: It was reported&apos; that room temperature slip in titanium takes place predominantly on {10i0} and in a <1120> direction, giving three potential slip systems. Hence, it should be possible to predict the operative primary system in the manner used by Taylor and Elam&apos; for alu- minum (i.e., the one with the greatest component of shear stress in the direction of slip). The stereo-graphic construction in Fig. 1 shows that this is true. In all cases, slip was found to occur initially on the (0110) plane and, in a number of cases, in the [21f0] direction. (The direction of slip was not determined for all orientations.) It follows that duplex slip can be expected when two slip systems are geometrically equally favorable for slip, as demonstrated in Fig. 2. In both crystals slip took place simultaneously on the (1700) and (olio) prismatic planes, as indicated by Fig. 2a and b. In the case of crystal B the movement of the specimen axis with increasing extension was toward the (10i0) direction, which represents the stable end orientation resulting from alternate slip on the [2ii0] and [1120] directions. This is analogous to the duplex slip process in face-centered cubic metals." Unpredictable Slip: In a number of crystals whose orientations were well within the operation of a single slip system, secondary slip occurred on planes not predicted by the criterion of maximum shear stress. In many areas caring failures can be directly related to electrical currents observed in the casings. It is the thesis of this paper that the observed casing currents are mainly due to electrochemical potentials of the type in evidence on spontaneous potential curves of electrical logs. The general nature of these potentials are discussed and an equivalent circuit is given for current and potential distributions around open holes. The casing forms a short circuit to these potentials and tends to average the effects of local cells. The case of casing corrosion opposite the Dakota water sands in the salt-mud area of Kansas is discussed anil used us a qualitative, illustration of the relation between SP&apos;s and casing currents. A method of quantitative derivation of casing current distribution frorn electric log SP curves, using linear transform theory, is described and results are compared with a measured current profile. The effects of hydrogen over-potentials at the cathodic portions of the pipe are considered and some laboratory data are given in support of conclusions regarding the over-1.01tuge.s. INTRODUCTION To date an appreciable amount of work has been done on the measurement of oil well casing currents and on the correlation of the anodic portions of the current profiles with corrosive casing failures. Speculations on the origin of the casing currents have, however, remained rather vague; and although almost every plausible cause has been mentioned, there is to the writers&apos; knowledge no clear-cut expose&apos; on the details of the causes of the corrosive currents in the literature. A study of current surveys and casing failures in the N.W. Burnett field, Ellis County. Kan.. indicated the probability that concentration cell emf&apos;s between the Wellington salt section and the relatively fresh waters in the Dakota sands were a major cause of the corrosion currents. A more general concept evolved upon analysis of the severe corrosive conditions in the Pleistocene sands in the Ventura Avenue and San Miguelito fields in California. In this area no major variations in the salt content of the formation waters occur and yet large casing currents are observed. An explanation is found in the fact that the local spontaneous potentials which are set up due to concentration contrast between the drilling fluid and the connate water are short circuited when casing is set. The very conductive path through the casing increases the magnitude of the currents and has the tendency to average local sources over fairly large intervals. Current will flow between the sections that are predominently shaly and the sections that are mostly sandy. At the places where the current leaves the pipe, corrosive attack will occur. This same phenomenon will be present wherever unprotected pipe is set through sections that show large SP kicks on the electric logs over reasonably thick interval~. GENERAL- NATURE OF THE SPONTANEOUS POTENTIALS When a sequence of sedimentary rocks is penetrated by a drill hole filled with a mud which has a different salt concentration from that in the formation waters, various types of electrochemical potentials are established between the formations and different parts of the mud column. Opposite clean sand sections. a simple liquid-liquid junction potential will be observed; while opposite argillaccous formations, a membrane potential, often referred to as shale potential, will be established. The first quantitative analysis of these emf&apos;s in terms of liquid junction and membrane potentials is due to Wyllie.1

Sooner or later, we all get involved in the economic study and valuation of a mineral deposit. To communicate clearly the necessary information, we must scrupulously use various terms with specific meaning. All these terms-such as ore, exploration, development, production, reserves, proven ore, probable ore, possible reserves, resources, as well as similar terms applying to coal-are continually on the lips of anyone who reports on the economic aspects of a mineral deposit at the exploration, development, and production stages. The meaning of these terms is even more important in feasibility studies to determine whether a deposit should be put into production. Finally, careless use of these terms in reports published for public financing may, and sometimes does, lead to prosecution of the writer for misleading information.

A Iaboratory drilling rig has been devised and placed in operation which permits the application of hydrostatic, terrastatic, and formation pore pressures to a rock sample for drilling under controlled conditions. Calibrated rests of this equipment in-dicate qualitative agreerment with field results on the effect of weight on bit, rotary speed, and rate of circ~~lation on drilling rate. Tests under pressure, using water and air as the drilling fluids, indicate that when drilling saturated limestone samples, a pressure differential between hydrostatic and formation pressure is the only pressure which affects drilling rate. A differential in either direction causes a reduction in rate, but the same diflerential from the wellbore into the formation causes the greater reduction. Also, in lime.stone, air favorably affected drilling rote only when compared to water at high hydrostatic pressurre, all other conditions remaining constant. Large increases in drilling rate with air could be obtained in the laboratory only while drilling a shale, which offered a limited permeability to nitrogen and which could be drilled with a differential from the formation into the wellbore. In general, the magnitude of the changes due to the pressure effect were small compared to changes in drilling rate obtainable by changing either bit weight or rotary speed. INTRODUCTION In the course of Humble&apos;s drilling research program, the desirability of investigating several factors which lend themselves to laboratory rather than field study became obvious. Principal reasons for this are the expense involved in field studies and the difficulty of exercising the required degree of control. Of primary importance are investigations of the effect of fluid pressure on rock rate, the effect of pressure on rock drillability, and a study of the fundamental mechanics of rock failure and chip generation. Several years ago some work in the laboratory on the effect of mud properties on drilling rate was re- ported to the API&apos;, but the completion of this work and the investigation of the other variables affecting drilling rate required equipment somewhat more elaborate than that used on these earlier tests. This equipment has been assembled to form Humble&apos;s Drilling Engineering laboratory. To date only the effect of pressure on rock drillability while using water and air has been investigated, and this work is not yet complete. Facilities are available to investigate the effect of fluid properties on rate of penetration, and information is being assembled on a current basis on the mechanics of drilling. A WIDE Variety of metallurgical defects in steel have commonly been attributed to the presence of excessive amounts of hydrogen. These defects include flakes in rails and forgings, cracks in welds, and blisters in enameled ware, They have been related to hydrogen largely by circumstantiat evidence because the proper sampling and analysis of steel for hydrogen has been known to be difficult and because no general agreement has existed with regard to the relative suitability and accuracy of available methods. The need for a direct approach to these problems has been widely recognized. This general situation has been well described in the publications of the British committee on the Heterogeneity of Steel Ingots,&apos; and current approaches to the problem were reviewed in a recent symposium of the AIME.I2 The plans described by the present authors at that meeting have now matured satisfactorily and will form the basis of this paper. The principal object of this paper will be to describe the methods of sampling and analysis which have been developed and to illustrate the usefulness and limitations of these methods by citing their application to a specific problem, The first problem selected for investigation was the behavior of hydrogen in rail steel. This was chosen because the occurrence of shatter cracks in rails has received a great deal of study over a long period of time. The defect can be controlled by the expensive procedure of slow in However, it may be hoped that a better understanding of the factors influencing the hydrogen content of rails will lead to a more efficient control of this problem. Rails provide a good starting point for a more general study of hydrogen in steel because they provide a cross-section large enough to develop cracks, Yet small enough for convenient handling and sampling. Rails were also selected because they arc made from plain carbon steel and it was felt that the initial work should not be complicated by the effects introduced by alloying elements. The considerations which determined the original planning of this study should be reviewed. The inherently complex nature of most hydrogen problems requires that a large amount of data must be collected for any particular case. This in turn means that any analytical procedure should be as rapid and simple as possible. The same objective of speed is indicated by the fact that it may finally become desirable to use hydrogen analysis in process control. It is also known that hydrogen is highly fugitive and that any procedure which facilitat~s early analysis of the sample without prolonged or irregular storage has distinct advantages. The most important previously reported methods of analysis may be classified into three general groups: (I) Vacuum fusion, (2) Vacuum extraction (without melting), (3) Total combustion.

IN the course of a recent investigation1 to develop a more satisfactory white-metal. bearing alloy, a number of alloy systems were studied. The cadmium-nickel system showed characteristics desirable in a bearing alloy, and the system was therefore studied in some detail. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD Alloying cadmium with nickel offered no serious difficulty. After melting the cadmium, clean sheet nickel was added while the temperature was maintained at 500° to 600° C: A few crystals of ammonium chloride2 served to clean the nickel when the latter did not "wet" readily. In preparing the individual alloys for thermal and microscopic investigation, a "hardener" containing about 10 per cent nickel was used.

INVESTIGATIONS of the constitution of the system Mg-Ba were first made by Grube and Dietrich1 between 0 and 47 atomic pct Ba and then by Klemm and Dincke1acker" ver the whole composition range. Klemm and Dinckelacker corroborated intermediate phases of the approximate formulas Mg9Ba and Mg4Ba, and showed a third compound to have the formula Mg2Ba, rather than Mg5Ba, as suggested by Grube and Dietrich. Mg2Ba had been previously recognized by Hellner and Laves3 s a MgZn2 (C14) type structure. The main discrepancies between the results of Grube and Dietrich and those of Klemm and Dinckelacker exist, however, in the liquidus temperatures and solidification equilibria of alloys containing more than about 10 atomic pct Ba. The liquidus temperatures measured by Grube and Dietrich, and the outline of the liquidus of Klemm and Dinckelacker are plotted in Fig. 1 on an enlarged scale. Although there are strong reasons to prefer the results of Klemm and Dinckelacker, it was considered worthwhile to remeasure liquidus temperatures of some alloys in the controversial composition range. The alloys, made up from sublimed magnesium and 99.5 wt pct pure barium, were melted in an Armco-iron crucible in a dynamic argon atmosphere. Thermal analyses were taken using a Speedomax auto- matic recorder. Careful stirring during the solidification process was required in order to avoid segregation. After thermal analysis some of the cast alloys were chemically analyzed. The intended and analyzed compositions of the ten alloys prepared are listed in Table I. Since standard barium determinations cannot differentiate between barium present as element and as oxide, both the barium and magnesium contents of the alloys were analyzed. The fact that the sum of barium and magnesium was close to 100 pct in each case was taken as evidence that no excessive oxidation had occurred. The liquidus temperatures measured are listed in Table I and plotted in Fig. 1. As can be seen, they are in good agreement with the liquidus found by Klemm and Dinckelacker. This leaves no doubt that the thermal results of Grube and Dietrich above 10 atomic pct Ba are incorrect. The success of European experiments in melting iron and steel with gases resulting from the decomposition of steam by incandescent coal, has encouraged me to design, with the valuable assistance of Mr. George S. Dwight, a plan for producing and burning these gases in a manner economical and efficient for metallurgical purposes. That this direction is the right one, is demonstrated by the repeated efforts made in practice, to introduce as much steam as possible with the blast in ordinary producers, thus displacing a certain amount of nitrogen. Such attempts, however, must always be limited by the cooling influence of the steam. THE value of molybdenum as a ferroalloy has been known for many years. For a long time, however, the metal was used only on a small scale in the iron industries, because the known source of supply appeared inadequate and the cost to the consumer was not stabilized. The world&apos;s production of molybdenum prior to 1914 was only a few thousand pounds per year and even during the war period annual production was only about 800,000 lb. Production during 1929 and 1930, however, was over 4,000,000 lb. per year and that of 1931 promises to be of the same order of magnitude. This remarkable increase in production is due primarily to the development of a large molybdenite deposit at Climax, Lake County, Colo., which has accounted for 80 per cent of the world&apos;s production of molybdenum during the past two years. Based on conservative esti-mates, the deposit at Climax has the capacity to maintain its 1929 and 1930 rate of production for 100 years or more. The production of molybdenum ores has been established on a new basis-in recent years as compared with the period during and before the world war. During the earlier period, production came from small deposits and the cost to the consumer fluctuated. At present, production comes from a few large deposits and the price is not only lower but also fairly constant. In recent years the price of molybdenum has consistently dropped as consumption increased. The present price is $0.95 per pound of molybdenum in ferromolybdenum and $0.80 for molybdenum in calcium molybdate. Before and during most of the war, Australia, Norway, and a few other foreign countries were the chief producers, while at present the United States is producing over 90 per cent of the world&apos;s production. With molybdenum available at a moderate cost, the steel industry has been adopting more and more the use of molybdenum as an alloy addition. It has been stated, by Sir James M. Barrie, that "the man of science appears to be the only man who has something to say, just now-and the only man who does not know how to say it ". The friendly jibe of the novelist contains enough exaggeration to make it humorous to the followers of Huxley and Spencer; but could any litterateur poke similar fun at the exponents of the avowedly utilitarian branches of science-the men of technology-without suggesting an unpleasant truth? Indeed the engineer does bungle language deplorably. He makes a fetish of efficiency, yet he shows no regard for the effective use of one of his most important tools-the pen; he believes devoutly in accuracy, yet he employs an instrument of precision as carelessly as a small boy handles a gun. This inconsistency may be due to causes such as were indicated by the Academic Senate when it undertook to explain the defective writing of the students in this university.* The Senate suggested that the student is "constantly subjected by his environment to the unedifying influence of myriad examples of poor English", and that he is also affected by "a certain public prejudice against correctness of expression". With these statements most of us will agree. Our local newspapers, for instance, tend to spoil the student&apos;s taste for good English; later in life, as an engineer, his daily contact with illiterate men inclines him to careless speech and slovenly writing. In recent years, oil well cementing compositions have been developed with low densities, controlled set strengths, and satisfactory thickening times. With the introduction of the permanent-type well completion method for cementing wells, another property—that of rate of filtration or water loss to permeable formations— has become important. Laboratory data show that cement slurries prepared with oil, water, bentonite, and calcium lignosulfonate possess satisfactory thickening times, strengths, and filtration properties for primary cementing of casing and for squeeze cementing with the permanent-type well completion technique. Cementing compositions have been prepared with oil-in-water emulsions varying in composition from 60 cc water and 20 cc oil per 100 gm cement to 90 cc water and 45 cc oil per 100 gm cement. These compositions have contained from 0.4 to 5.0 per cent calcium lignosulfonate by weight of dry cement. Slurries prepared from these compositions weigh 11.4 to 13.1 lb/ga1 and have filtration rates of from 10 cc to approximately 100 cc in 30-min API tests at room temperature. The unfiltered emulsion cements develop one-day tensile strengths of 60 to 220 psi; and the filtered mass sets to tensile strengths of 60 to 150 psi in 12 hours and develops strengths of 320 to 515 psi in seven days when cured at 125° F. Field experience gained from 13 field mixing jobs demonstrates the utility of the emulsion cement for permanent-type squeeze cementing operations. INTRODUCTION In recent years, research in oil well cementing composition has been directed toward the development of cements having low densities, controlled set strengths, satisfactory thickening times, and low rates of water loss by filtration. Two well cementing compositions that have been developed with these properties are the modified cements containing, respectively, 12 and 25 per cent bentonite clay and various concentrations of calcium lignosulfonate1,2 In a search for other ways to incorporate these characteristics in a cementing composition, consideration was given to the rheological properties of oil-emulsion drilling fluids. Many of the desirable properties observed in oil-emulsion drilling fluids are equally advantageous in a cementing composition. For example, low water loss by filtration and low density, which are inherent characteristics of these oil-in-water emulsions, are desirable for many oil well cementing operations. Furthermore, oil-emulsion slurries have lubricating properties similar to those of oil-emulsion muds, a factor which should provide ease of rotation of casing during primary cementing operations. The properties of lubrication and low filtration may be of special value in both primary and squeeze cementing operations encountered in slim-hole drilling. Most commercial alloys undergo changes in phase composition after casting. This is a natural result of the fact that the alloys are not in a state of phase equilibrium as cast and phase changes will therefore take place, with more or less rapidity, in an attempt to attain equilibrium. The practical aspect of aging in zinc-Alloy die castings concerns the changes in physical properties and in dimensions that may accompany aging phase changes. Harmful alterations have been reduced to a minimum and zinc-alloy die castings are being produced today that are so stable with respect to dimensions and physical properties that they are entirely suitable for most practical purposes1. In the first paper2 of this series, and in this paper, aging phase changes of zinc-alloy die castings have been investigated and the possible influence of these changes on dimensional changes of the castings has been evaluated and compared with the dimensional changes actually experienced. The change of dimensions has been selected for practical comparison in these papers because the effect of phase changes on the dimensions of a casting is directly calculable from X-ray crystal-analysis data of the phase structure. The die-casting alloys considered contain, in addition to zinc, 4 per cent of aluminum, about 0.03 per cent magnesium, and from 0 to 3 per cent of copper. It was shown in the former paper that the eutectoidal decomposition of the beta aluminum-zinc phase, while intrinsically capable of causing a considerable shrinkage, can have very little effect on the observed shrinkage of die castings because it takes place within a few days of aging, whereas the observed shrinkage continues for five weeks. It was therefore concluded that the other existing phase change, namely, the segregation of secondary phase from the zinc-base solid solution, must account for the major portion of the shrinkage.

The measure of value of an oil property is approximated by the length of time it takes to "pay out;" viz., the time required for it to return the original investment. This time varies in different fields. In the Appalachian and Mid-Continent fields, a good investment pays out in about four years; in California, it requires a slightly longer time; and in the Gulf field about two years. The two principal methods for establishing these values are based on acreage, as in California, and on production, as in the Appalachian field. The method of establishing values based on production1 was worked out in the Appalachian fields and approximates the value remarkably well in some fields; but it is a rule of thumb and should be used intelligently. Briefly, the method is as follows: An arbitrary number of dollars (called the barrel-day price) multiplied by the number of barrels of settled daily production of the property gives the value. In its crudest application, the barrel-day price is determined by the "$10 to $0.01" rule, which means that the barrel-day price is one thousand times the prevailing price of oil. For instance, with oil at $3.50 per bbl. the barrel-day price would be $3500 per bbl. This rule, however, is not strictly applied, for the barrel price is varied according to whether or not the wells "hold up." But when a barrel price for a district has been fixed it is quite general to raise or lower the price with the fluctuation in the price of oil; here the"$10 to $0.0l"ruleisused extensively. However, the prospective purchaser takes into account tangible equipment upon the property, the extent to which the drilling program has been carried out, whether or not the wells are "shot" or natural, depth of wells, spacing of wells, paraffin trouble, etc. The basis of this method is settled production. As soon as production is considered settled, a flat barrel-day price is generally applied to all properties, no matter what their age. If it were possible to show that this flat rate was erroneous and that the value of the property depended on the point on the decline curve at which the wells happened to be (in other words, their age), and also on the operating costs, the future price
