WITH so tremendous a subject, an attempted review of the coal situation of the world in a short talk must necessarily be of a sketchy character. It is hardly necessary to tell a body of engineers that had it not been for nature's gift of coal the material side of modern civilization would never have reached its present status. On the other side, it is regrettable that it was a byproduct of coal, T. N. T., which made possible Germany's initial success in this war, because that country had an enor-mous development of manufacturing plants that could be immediately utilized to make this destructive agent. One sometimes hears the casual remark that when the coal of the world is exhausted we shall use electricity; but, of course, electricity is ordinarily only a means of transforming and transmitting energy derived from fuel or water power, and chiefly from coal. It is true, we have much undeveloped water power, but it is more or less remote from the centers of industry; and when all shall have been developed it will not begin to supply the power requirements of the world. It is, however, reasonable to expect that before the world's supply of coal shall be exhausted, methods will have been discovered of harnessing other forces of nature, such as the tides, or the energy emanating from the sun. Petroleum and natural gas naturally come to mind, but the days of both, as fuel, appear to be numbered, although the products of petroleum, if economically used, doubtless will be available for internal-combustion engines, automobiles, trucks, and boats. for a long time, provided the reckless use of crude petroleum as an ordinary fuel is stopped. The products of petroleum are too valuable to mankind for such waste to be permitted. The civilization of the world, therefore, appears to rest, and, so far as can be seen, will indefinitely continue to rest, upon coal.

The sulphuretted ores of Carroll and Grayson Counties, Va., Ore Knob, Ashe County, N. C., and Ducktown, Tenn., in their general position, are in the prolongation of the same massive deposits. The existence of the extensive ore-bodies has been well-established, not only in a practical way, but by the careful research of a number of men of science, including Dr. T. S. Hunt, Professor Kerr, Dr. Genth, Rogers, Safford, Professor Egleston, Dr. H. E. Colton, the writer, and others, and described in one or more of the volumes of our Transactions, as well as in other publications. The greater quantity of' these ores being pyrrhotite, although much of them carry nonmagnetic disulphide, their reduction on the gronnd will probably lead to better results than an attempt to mine and ship them to distant places; and their use as sulphuric acid producers, to be employed in the cheap manufacture of valuable fertilizers, will be chiefly the subject of this paper. The great deposits of Carroll County, Va., are now nearer to railway transportation than any of the others, being six to eight miles from the Cripple Creek extension of the Norfolk and Western Railway, now being constructed, the grading of which is in an advanced state of completion. I am not able to state what are the present prospects of an early completion of the contemplated line of railway to Ducktown. For a long while, during the time those deposits were mined and reduced for their copper, the works were forty miles from any railway ; and the same may be said of Ore Knob, N. C. The deposits in Carroll and Grayson Counties, Va., being now the most accessible to cheap transportation, will naturally claim the greater part of our attention ; though it may be pertinent to remark, just here, that the ores of Ducktown, like those of Carroll and Grayson, Va., exist in the undecomposed levels as iron and copper sulphurets, much of which is a non-magnetic disulphide, as stated, with occasional exhibits of sulphides, such as covellite, erubescite, etc. There are, now and then, small quantities of silver, lead, and zinc,

DURING the past few years there has been considerable interest in the sizing and the preparation of the iron ore fed into blast furnaces. Furnacemen know that proper sizing of ore tends to increase the efficiency of the furnace. It has been shown by Joseph1 and his associates that there is a direct relationship between the porosity of an ore particle and the time required for its reduction in the blast furnace. This relationship may be stated as follows: All other factors remaining constant, the time for reduction of a given sample of ore is inversely proportional to its porosity. As a consequence, large pieces of very porous ore, say 3 or 4 in. in cross section, will be completely reduced by the time they reach the hot zone just above the tuyeres, while large pieces of dense, nonporous ore may reach the hot zone with their centers unreduced. This means that for the latter complete reduction will be accomplished by the so-called "direct method;" i.e., where carbon reacts directly with the ore. Some recent work by Philbrook2 seems to contradict this rule. He found that of two unlike ores he studied, the one with the lower porosity reduced more readily. He explained his results as "possibly due to an apparently greater tendency of the `A' ore (lower porosity) to crack during preliminary dehydration and during reduction." This brings his results in line with the rule stated above. It is not the author's intention to enter into a discussion of the merits of "direct" versus "indirect" reduction. It is enough to say that, in general, indirect reduction is desirable. For the greatest efficiency, Gruner's theorem3 requires that all reduction in the blast furnace be indirect. Joseph seems to believe this also, because in his recent article on Some Comparisons between Iron Ore, Sinter and Nodules as Blast Furnace Feed' he concludes that: "In general, the carbon in blast-furnace coke is used most efficiently when the largest amount of the carbon charged reaches the tuyeres." However, P. V. Martin,' in an excellent paper, has shown that some direct reduction may actually increase the efficiency of the furnace; that is, increase its rate of production while maintaining maximum fuel economy. For nonporous ores there is more opportunity to have an excess of direct reduction unless the factors that make for indirect reduction are favored; for instance; the proper sizing of the ore particles. In China all minerals are, theoretically at least, the property of the Emperor, and the Imperial permission must be got from him for the privilege of working them. A direct tax is levied on this privilege, and by simple command, the Emperor can close a mine at any time. Occult geomantic influences are a large factor in determining the opening or the arbitrary closing of a mine. The location with reference to points of the compass, graves and natural objects, may be really or professedly considered as indicating that those influences are favorable or unfavorable. The consequence, is, of course, that for the authorization and encouragement of any considerable enterprise, friends' at court, practical politics, and more or less bribery, are required. As a result, most Chinese mining is illicit, and is carried on in a small way only. Often along a single vein, or over a small section of mining country, a few individuals obtain rights over all the openings, most probably by loaning money to the head-men of the operators and holding the mines as security for the debt. In such cases, perhaps, for better security, all the ore is reduced in the works established by the creditors, who also handle all silver produced..As the head-men are, for the most part, improvident, and the laws and customs for the collection of' debts are stringent and peculiar, the " officemen" or creditors acquire in time what is practically an ownership of

DuRing 1931 Peru lost its place as ninth among the oil-producing countries of the world, to Argentina, and even in tenth place its production only slightly exceeded that of Trinidad. The preliminary figures for 1932 indicate that Peru will lose tenth place for that year to Trinidad. The production in barrels of the three coastal fields of Peru during the past three years was as follows: In addition to this crude production, the International and Lobitos companies produced approximately 770,000 bbl. of casinghead gasoline during 1932. There was no outstanding development in the oil industry in Peru during 1932; activity in the fields was very much restricted due to curtailment of production and the low price of oil. The potential production of the property of the International Petroleum Co. Ltd. greatly exceeded the actual production. By the beginning of 1932, a total of 2348 productive wells had been drilled on the property of the International, of which 547 had been abandoned, leaving 1801 productive wells at that' date. These wells cover a total productive area of approximately 13,500 acres. The crude produced has an average gravity of 37° to 38° Be. The Lobitos crude is of approximately the same gravity. The earliest oil pool developed in the Peruvian Coastal area is now more than 40 years old and is still producing. The major development in the area took place between 1920 and 1930. Production at the present rate can be maintained for 10 years or more.

The chloridizing mill of the Standard Reduction Co. is located about 75 miles south of Salt Lake City on the Tintic branch of the Denver & Rio Grande Western R. R. and 12 miles from the Tintic Standard mine. The daily capacity is 200 toss of a siliceous, low-grade, silver-lead ore from this property. It has operated continuously since it was started in January, 1921. The process consists essentially of a chloridizing roast followed by a percolating leach with a nearly saturated solution of common salt, acidified with sulfuric acid, the precipitation of silver on sponge copper and of copper and lead on tin-plate cuttings. The precipitates are shipped to a smelter. Some of the general ideas involved are said to have been used by Augustin in England, in 1840. A number of textbooks treat of the subject, especially the chloridizing roast followed by a leach with sodium hyposulfite or amalgamation. The process was revived in this district by Theo. P. Holt, N. C. Christensen, the Bureau of Mines, and others. SCHEUCH, Chicago, Ill.-Since starting up our Hawthorne copper wire plant we have found that wire bars from certain suppliers perform quite differently from those of other suppliers. In attempting to evaluate these bars, we made cross-sections, and in making these cross-sections we found considerable variation in the crystal structure. Indications were that there was some preference in the type of crystal structure. In attempting to find the reason for that we discussed it with the various producers and-also reviewed the literature. Mr. DeWald was assigned to determine the various factors that enter into copper wire bar crystal structure, on the basis that the product was a horizontally cast wire bar of practically identical composition and of recognized good composition for the present quality product sold in the market. Mr. DeWald has asked me to say that he should have made reference to Mr. Dalzell's paper on a theory concerning gases in refined copper. D. K. CRAMPTON, Marion, Conn. (written discussion).-Mr. DeWald has set forth an interesting and thorough exposition of the factors controlling macrostructure of this material. It is particularly interesting to us as it somewhat parallels work we have done on macrostructure of round copper billets for piercing into tubes. Our findings as to the effect of the several variables on macrostructure check Mr. DeWald's. The general principles underlying the two are precisely the same. The fact that we worked with copper deoxidized with phosphorous instead of tough-pitch copper, and round billets cast on end instead of wire bars, does not influence the results. We have found that round billets cast so as to produce large radial grains have greater soundness and density than those with a fine macrostructure. Further, and more important, we have found that the billets with large radial grains show markedly different performance on piercing from those having a fine equiaxed structure. With a given temperature of billet and adjustment of piercing machine, the coarse-grained material requires appreciably lower power for piercing and goes through the operation inn appreciably less time. These two differences are of sufficient commercial importance to warrant exercise of great care in maintaining the coarse structure. It seems probable that much the same phenomenon should hold in the hot rolling of tough-pitch wire bars. We would expect that, other things being equal, the coarse-grained wire bars would roll more readily and require less power than fine-grained ones. Moreover, we believe the differences in initial structure of the wire bars should be largely eliminated in the hot rolling process and during the subsequent drawing and annealing, of wire would be entirely eradicated.

Although the first application of strip mining dates back to 1866, the true origin of today's problem of land reclamation is found in World War II, when the yawning war machines demanded more, and faster fuel production. To meet the new wartime demands, the strip coal mining companies that had been producing coal for the normal needs of industry and commerce during peacetime worked to the full extent of their capacities but were unable to satisfy the voracious demand. To supplement the production of the established mining firms, a host of temporary, make-shift coal strip operations came into being-road contractors, ditchers and foundation excavators, earth movers of every type became strip coal operators. Unfortunately, many were of the here-today-gone-tomorrow category, and showed little concern for the condition of the land after mining. Likewise, the land owners of the mined properties (most of the land was on royalty lease or tonnage contract) showed little concern. Land owners realized from their acreages more income during the war years of coal production than could have been obtained in two or three lifetimes of conventional farming or other land uses. Most of these mined lands were sub-marginal with little productive promise. As a result the wartime stripping produced most of what are known today as "orphan banks" or "abandoned strip pits." It is of these that so much of the present day complaints about strip mine reclamation are being made.

ENGINEERS from industrialized countries are frequently called upon to examine mining operations in primitive areas and make recommendations regarding mechanization and modernization. They often set forth with self-confidence, knowing full well that all that is needed is their experience and several shiploads of mining machinery, and at times they mentally provide the answers before the problems have been clearly stated. In primitive areas it is absolutely essential that the examining engineer spend enough time at the site to acquire a thorough understanding of what is being done now and why it is done the way it is. The objective here is to state in simple terms some of the problems that may be encountered, in- as much as solutions, if they can be found at all, will differ with each experience.

The phenomenon of the change of volume of pressed powder compacts upon sintering is well known in the field of powder metallurgy. Depending upon the metal or metals involved and the pressure used in forming, a compact may, in the course of time of sintering at a given temperature, expand mono-tonically, contract monotonically, or first show a volume change of one sign followed by a change of the opposite sign. It is clearly desirable to have accurate knowledge of the magnitude and sign of the change in dimensions to be expected in any given case, both from the point of view of direct usefulness in the fabrication of parts by powder metallurgy, and from the longer range viewpoint of elucidating the fundamental mechanism of metallic sintering. The present study was therefore undertaken as a first step in acquiring systematic and reasonably quantitative knowledge of the change in density of metal powder compacts during sintering. For practical reasons, copper was selected as the material to be studied first, and its densification followed as a function of temperature and time of sintering in hydrogen and in vacuum. Experimental Procedure The copper powder used was that designated by the manufacturer (Metals Disintegrating Co., Elizabeth, N. J.) as MD-151. This powder was sifted through Tyler standard screens to separate the fraction having particle size range between 200 mesh and 325 mesh, and this fraction was used in all the subsequent work. Compacts weighing about 10 g were then pressed in a 1 in. diam round die, using a pressure of 20,000 psi throughout. Sintering was carried out in commercially built electric furnaces in which the resistance windings are so disposed as to produce a nearly uniform temperature along the axis of the furnace for a length of about 18 in. centrally located. In order to be able to sinter in a controlled atmosphere, a 2 in. stainless steel tubing was inserted in the furnace. Each end of the tube was cooled by a water jacket about 7 in. long, and closed with a rubber stopper. The hydrogen used for one series of specimens was purified as described in Ref. 1. For the other set, a pressure of about 0.5 mm Hg was maintained during sintering by a Welch Duo-Seal Pump. The specimens were heated on square trays made of stainless steel. In placing specimens in the trays, a thin even layer of powdered aluminum oxide was first sprinkled on the bottom of the tray. A copper guard disk about half the thickness of the specimen was then placed in the tray and covered with a second layer of alumina. The actual specimen was then set on the guard disk, and a final coat of alumina sprinkled over the specimen. This technique was evolved for sintering the specimens in such a way as to reduce the influence of unknown extraneous factors to a minimum. If the specimen is placed directly on the tray and sintered, it is found that the resulting shape is that of a frustum of a cone, rather than a section of a right circular cylinder, since friction with the tray prevents the bottom of the specimen from contracting at the same rate as the top. In the arrangement used in these experiments, the guard disk provided a support which shrank at the same rate as the specimen, and the alumina powder reduced to a minimum friction between guard disk and tray, and between specimen and guard disk. The procedure followed in sintering consisted of bringing the furnace to the required temperature, and then inserting the specimen into the central heated portion of the furnace tube in one of the two atmospheres used. At the end of the heating period, the specimen was cooled by bringing it into a portion of the furnace surrounded by a water jacket. These manipulations were carried out without opening the furnace, by means of rods which were attached to the trays and operated through a sliding seal in the rubber stopper. The progress of densification of the copper compacts was studied at 1300, 1400, 1500, 1600, 1700, and 1800°F. At each of these temperatures, a specimen was allowed to sinter for each of the following time intervals: M, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, and 64 hr. The thickness and diameter of each specimen were measured with micrometers before and after sintering, and each was weighed on an analytical balance after sintering. Results The techniques described in the preceding section were found to give satisfactory results. The specimens were not detectibly warped after sintering, and were usually of uniform diameter (that is, truly round) to within 0.001 in., a very few showing a variation in diameter of ±0.002 in. Diffusion in the presence of deformation was studied by the method of vacuum dezincification of copper-rich and silver-rich solid solutions containing 7 to 30 pct Zn. The specimens were designed to permit the study of diffusion in separate portions of a given specimen characterized by strain rates ranging from essentially zero to approximately 10 sec-. No effect of deformation on diffusion was observed. BEGINNING with the work of Buffington and Cohen: interest in the question of the effect of stress or strain on diffusion has largely been concentrated on the enhancement of diffusion in specimens subjected to Continuous plastic deformation. The present research is a contribution to this limited area. However, as a preliminary to focusing attention on this special topic, it will be desirable to make a broad survey of the larger question, especially since there has been considerable foreign work in areas outside those of current interest in the United States. Since most of the topics referred to in the following section are both complex and imperfectly understood at present, it has been expedient in most instances to offer only a guide to the general nature of the work rather than a critical evaluation. PREVIOUS WORK The effect of elastic stress on diffusion has received considerable attention, especially with regard to the thermodynamic driving force for diffusion. The thermodynamic treatments have been based on the work of Gibb, Voigt, Planck, and Leontovich.' Konobeevskii and Selisski6 made a first attempt at treating the problem in 1933, and Gorskii7 a few years later gave a solution applicable to single crystals as well as to polycrystalline specimens. In 1943 Konobeevski8 published treatments that have been the basis of much Russian work up to the present. For example, Aleksandrov and Lyubov used his work in explaining the velocity of lateral growth of pearlite. Early work in the United States was that of Mooradian and Norton, which showed that lattice distortion tends to be relieved before it can significantly affect the diffusion process. Druyvesteyn and Berghoutl1 observed a slight effect of elastic strain on self-diffusion in copper, while de Kazinczy12 found that both elastic and plastic deformation increased the rate of diffusion of hydrogen in steel. On the other hand, Grimes58 observed no effect of either elastic or plastic straining on the diffusion of hydrogen in nickel. High-frequency alternating stresses have been reported by various investigator s13-l5 to increase the rate of diffusion. A special form of elastic stressing is the imposition of hydrostatic pressure, a condition that is amenable to Conventional thermodvnamic analysis. Most of the experimental results in this area are consistent in showing a slight decrease in diffusion rates at high pressures.16-l8 Although Geguzinl reported a pronounced effect of relatively small pressures, Barnes and Mazey20 failed to Corroborate this finding, while Guy and Spinelli21 advanced an explanation of the phenomenon observed by Geguzin. It has been recognized that the thermodynamic treatment of diffusion phenomena in an arbitrarily stressed body is complicated by the fact that the desired state of quasi-equilibrium of the shear stresses cannot be maintained during a general diffusion process. However, attempts have been made by Meix-ner22-24 and Fasto to treat certain restricted cases, such as relaxation. FastovZ7 has also incorporated the general stress tensor into the thermodynamics of irreversible processes. The lattice strain that accompanies the formation of a solid solution has been the subject of much study,28-s0 and indirectly it has entered into many recent theories of diffusion. However, some Russian investigators31'32 have taken other views of this matter and have predicted large effects on diffusion rates because of concentration stresses.o In completing this brief resume of previous work involving elastic strains and before proceeding to a consideration of the effect of continuous plastic deformation, it should be pointed out that deformation of various additional types may also influence diffusion. The effect of cold-working on subsequent diffusion has been studied directly by AndreevaS and by Schumann and Erdmann-Jesnitzer, while indirect evidence has been obtained by Miller and Guarnieri and by Vitman.38 Thermal stresses may also influence diffusion, contributions to this subject having been made by Fastovs7 and by Aleksandrov and Lyubv. The work of Johnson and Martin,o Dienes and Damask,3Band DamaskS considered the question of radiation-enhanced diffusion. In considering previous work on the subject of plastic deformation and diffusion, attention will be directed to those studies concerned primarily with diffusion rather than with its relation to Creep, e.g., the work of Dorn, or to the acceleration of diffusion -controlled reactions. Annealed, .Poly crystalline, low carbon steel exhibits a phenomenon known as the "yield point." If such a steel is loaded in tension, the load increases steadily with elastic strain, drops suddenly, fluctuates about some constant load value for a time and then rises with further strain. The load at which the sudden drop occurs is called the "upper yield point"; the load at which deformation proceeds at constant load is known as the "lower yield point"; the amount of elongation at constant load is termed the "yield point elongation." Deformation which occurs during the yield point elongation is heterogeneous in nature, deformed metal existing next to undeformed metal. The drop in load from the upper yield point is concurrent with the formation of a band of deformed metal which usually appears at a stress concentration such as a fillet and at an angle of approximately 45" with the direction of pull. As deformation proceeds during the yield point elongation, the deformed region grows until the entire specimen has been strained an amount equal to the strain in the first band. A phenomenon very often associated with the yield point is that of strain aging. Aging in steels may be of two types: quench aging, or precipitation hardening, and strain-aging. Strain aging differs from precipitation hardening in that if the metal is merely strained instead of given a solution anneal and quenched, it then undergoes changes in properties similar to those observed in quench aging. The yield point effect and strain aging are most markedly exhibited by low carbon steel, but have been observed in other alloys. Numerous explanations for the mechanisms of both phenomena have been advanced, but the evidence for the acceptance of any of the hypotheses is incomplete. One of the explanations of the yield point phenomenon frequently proposed is that there exists a honeycomb of grain boundary material that supports the load above the yield strength of the ferrite and that when this network ruptures, the ferrite flows with no increase in load. This notion was first advanced by Dalbyl in 1913 and has been since put forward in more concrete form by many investigators. The testing of this hypothesis was, in part, the object of the present investigation. Similarly, the mechanism by which strain aging occurs remains to be explained. Presumably, it is a precipitation hardening phenomenon similar to quench aging, the precipitation being initiated by strain. However, it is not known whether the process is a solution and precipitation effect or a change in solubility due to strain. One obvious method of determining whether or not the yield point is a grain boundary phenomenon is to determine if single crystals exhibit a yield point. Low and Gensamer2 have shown that carbon and nitrogen are responsible for the yield point and aging in steel and that these effects can be eliminated by the removal of these elements through wet hydrogen purification. Single crystals that have been grown in wet hydrogen treated material must then be recarburized or re-nitrided in order to evaluate the effect of grain boundaries. In the present investigation, single crystals of iron which had been annealed in wet hydrogen to remove the carbon and nitrogen were cut into two specimens having the same orientation with respect to the tension axis. Of these, one specimen was pulled in tension in the wet hydrogen treated state and the other was carburized or nitrided and tested similarly. All the crystals were examined for a yield-point and strain aging. The grain boundary hypothesis for the explanation of the yield point in steel has been tested only indirectly previously. Arrowsmith,3 Andrew and Lee,4 Edwards and Pfeil,5 Fell,6 Ludwik and Scheu,7 Winlock and Leiter8 and others found a decrease in proportional limit and yield point effect with an in-

Trends in the metal mining industry were definitely down in 1954. With a record in 1953 of $1.8 billion output, the last year dropped to $1.5 billion, the lowest value since 1950. The decrease in iron ore production alone accounted for at least 10 pct of the decline. PROBABLY more than any previous year, political debates of 1954 marked a new high for the mining industry. Lead and zinc prices gave forth with minor rallies producing no real improvements. An anticipated drop in copper prices never came to be. Early in the year arguments for more free trade versus tariffs to restrict imports were voiced eloquently by Charles P. Taft, president, Committee for a National Trade Policy, and Andrew Fletcher, president, St. Joseph Lead Co.

Edwards developed a continuous inclined paddle scrubber which removed a substantial amount of the charred coatings from the grains with a surprisingly small amount of degradation of the sand itself.1 The satisfactory results obtained on foundry sand, using this piece of equipment in conjunction with classification, suggested that a similar procedure could probably be applied to the cleaning of other sands, such as those required by the glass and chemical industries. This paper describes the flowsheet and the results of tests performed on impure natural sands. The four materials tested were silica sands obtained from widely separated geographical areas. Three of the sands tested contained various amounts of iron oxide and the fourth an excessive amount of calcareous bonding material. The iron oxide was present predominantly in the form of grain coatings, which were scuffed by the paddle scrubber, and in all cases a product was manufactured which would meet one of the sets of specifications imposed by the glass industry' The Edwards paddle scrubber used in these tests consists of a rubber-lined steel cylinder 18 in. in diam and 48 in. long, mounted on a frame so that its slope can be varied 5 ° to 35º from horizontal. This variable slope permits controlled flow of material through the machine. Rubber paddles rotate inside the cylinder and are secured to a center shaft 2 in. square, which extends through the entire length and is turned at both ends so that it can be supported by sleeve bearings centrally fixed in the end plates of the shell. At the upper or feed end it extends through the bearing on the end plate into a sheave, to which the motor drive is connected by means of Texrope transmission. The four sets of paddles mounted on the shaft, two in each set, are made of rubber belting, 1/4 in. thick, 9 in. wide, and 16 in. long. The two paddles in each set are secured on opposite sides of the square shaft, but in the same longitudinal position along the shaft axis. In other words, the two paddles in the set operate 180° apart. Each successive set is mounted 90º from the preceding one. One end of each paddle is bolted to the square shaft and the other weighted by a steel bar, 1x1 ½ x9 in. long, which is attached about 1/ 2 in. from the outer tip of the paddle. By centrifugal force at proper shaft speed, these weights force the paddle surface to rub smoothly against the rubber lining of the cylinder. During operation, the sand forces its way between the paddle face and the surface of the cylinder, providing the necessary abrading action as the pulp flows by gravity down the length of the cylinder. The capacity of the machine is limited by the amount and the hardness of the coating material and by the quality of product desired. Limestone replacement and contact metamorphic orebodies are 80 irregular that sampling and estimating are far less. exact than in more regular types of deposits; both the mineralized masses and the lenses of ore within them are extremely irregular. So much development work is required to find the ore that the expense of blocking out great tonnages is prohibitive; furthermore, the rock near these orebodies is so heavy that drifts or raises cannot be kept open for many years without excessive repairs. As a result, few mines in limestone have more than three years supply of ore in sight. As most of the ore, is developed by stoping— not by drifting, raising, or drilling—estimates of ore developed do not indicate the total amount of ore that may be expected; they simply indicate the relative condition of the mines. But even if they are to do this, they must be made according to a fixed plan, intelligently carried out. The estimates of ore in the Calumet & Arizona Copper mines, Warren District, Ariz., have been of much value to those who plan the mining and development work. This paper describes the methods of sampling and estimating used in these mines. Sampling Samples are taken in various ways and depend on the condition of the working and the purpose for which the sample is to be used. Drifts, crosscuts, and raises are sampled by channels or by taking a grab off each mine car as it is filled. Stopes are usually sampled by drill holes or by taking a representative sample off each mine car; the latter, or chute, sample is by far the best sample. All workings are studied periodically by an engineer, who makes graphic and detail notes of the geologic structure, as shown in Fig. 1. The daily car tally and assay of each particular working is added to the same sheet opposite the material it represents. These sheets make a permanent record, showing the exact boundaries as well as the grade of ore in all workings.

Terminal facilities were recently completed at Conneaut, Ohio, on Lake Erie, for the Bessemer and Erie Railroad Co. (a wholly-owned subsidiary of U.S. Steel Corp.) which may become the blue- print for all future coal shipping terminals. Design and engineering of the new facility was by Soros Associates, New York, N. Y. Unlike terminals of conventional design, for example, those at Toledo and Newport News, which load coal directly from the railroad car to the vessel, the new installation passes the coal into temporary storage, loads the vessel from temporary storage and provides alternative reclaiming systems in case of major system failure.
