The aim of this Source Book has been to bring together in concise form information on the wealth of technical literature on mining and geology issued by the bewilderingly many state bureaus, federal bureaus, technical societies, trade associations and other noncommercial agencies in the United States. The effort has been made to include the navies of all the noncommercial publishers of such technical literature, to indicate where and at what price the articles may be obtained, as well as to give with as much detail as space permits specific information on individual papers. The thought has been to put the information particularly in the hands of the younger members of the profession, who may not yet have had the wide contacts with this literature that they will need in later life. Several factors have interfered with the complete attainment of the original intention. Undoubtedly some agencies that properly have a place in these pages have unintentionally been omitted; many agencies canvassed were omitted as not having literature of direct concern here; in other cases some. of the needed information was lacking; and the limitations of time and space have bounded the scope of the compilation.. Except in one or two cases, only publications prior to July, 1932, are included here, and from that standpoint the book is necessarily incomplete, as additions are continually being made to the files of literature on these subjects. Individual titles have been listed whenever possible but where an agency has collected a great mass of published material only most important titles, and a general review of the scope of the works, can be made. This results in penalizing, in a way, bureaus such as the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the U. S. Geological Survey, which have voluminous and vitally important works in the fields covered, because space commensurate with that volume and importance cannot be allowed. MOST illustrious Princes, often have I considered the metallic arts as a whole, as Moderatus Columella2 considered the agricultural arts, just as if I had been considering the whole of the human body ; and when I had perceived the various parts of the subject, like so many members of the body, I became afraid that I might die before I should understand its full extent, much less before I could immortalise it in writing. This book itself indicates the length and breadth of the subject, and the number and importance of the sciences of which at least some little knowledge is necessary to miners. Indeed, the subject of mining is a very extensive one, and one very difficult to explain ; no part of it is fully dealt with by the Greek and Latin authors whose works survive ; and since the art is one of the most ancient, the most necessary and the most profitable to mankind, I considered that I ought not to neglect it. Without doubt, none of the arts is older than agriculture, but that of the metals is not , less ancient ; in fact they are at least equal and coeval, for no mortal man ever tilled a field without implements. In truth, in all the works of agricul- ture, as in the other arts, implements are used which are made from metals, or which could not be made without the use of metals ; for this reason the metals are of the greatest necessity to man. When an art is so poor that it lacks metals, it is not of much importance, for nothing is made without tools. Besides, of all ways whereby great wealth is acquired by good and honest means, none is more advantageous than mining ; for although from fields which are well tilled (not to mention other things) we derive rich yields, yet we obtain richer products from mines ; in fact, one mine is often much more beneficial to us than many fields. THE purpose of a symposium, I take it, is to gather together a group interested in a common intellectual field, in order to exchange views, and to appraise the state of knowledge. Symposia are the more successful, the greater the activity in the chosen field and the wider the range of applicability of the information gained. From time to time, as emphasis changes from one field of research to another, a given subject may enjoy popularity and later retire into a scientific somnolence, for fashions change even among engineers and scientists. The subject of this symposium, however, enjoys the advantages of wide applicability and of high current interest and productivity in results. It is a timely subject for a symposium; with much new information, surely metallurgical engineers should now devote an increasing attention to its application to practice. In beginning the symposium, I shall attempt briefly to appraise our basic knowledge in the field, to survey instances of practical usefulness, and to suggest where new work might be most productive of useful results. There are many examples of direct practical application of diffusion knowledge, and it is the purpose of the several papers in this symposium to review these. In this introduction I shall attempt to take a broad view, which, while it will but poorly serve the engineer in the solution of any given problem, may perhaps be of some use in assessing the state of knowledge in this field. RATE OF DIFFUSION Liquid Metals The process of diffusion among liquid metals, of gases in liquid or solid metals, or among solid metals, is ubiquitous, to say the least. The manufacture of alloys by the intermelting of metals, the addition of ferroalloys to molten steel, the deoxidation of molten alloys, all involve diffusion in the liquid state. The oxidation of molten copper for purposes of purification, the unsought oxidation of alloys generally during melting and casting, the reaction of liquid steel with oxidizing slags in the open-hearth furnace, the absorption of nitrogen by liquid steel, particularly in the bessemer furnace, all operate by the diffusion of gases in liquid metals. These processes have not been studied much from the viewpoint of rates of diffusion. Alloys are made by melting metals with stirring and with allowance of time for mixing (which is diffusion) but I know of no studies that seem to define the necessary times, and though in only very rare cases can faulty properties of the finished castings be ascribed to inadequate mixing, and though certainly in most cases, with stirring, the rate of diffusion is adequate to give sufficient mixing, a more quantitative treatment would be good to have. It is not wholly certain that thorough and sufficient mixing is at all times attained, for I suspect that ferroalloy additions to steel, and that additions of aluminum to steel as a deoxidizer, especially in the sampling of steels

THE remarkable advance in the Science of Mineralogy, during the years that have elapsed since this Text-Book was first issued in 1877, has made it necessary, in the preparation of a new edition, to rewrite the whole as well as to add much new matter and many new illustrations. The work being designed chiefly to meet the wants of class or private instruction, this object has at once determined the choice of topics discussed, the order and fullness of treatment and the method of presentation. In the chapter on. Crystallography, the different types of crystal forms are described under the now accepted thirty-two groups classed according to their symmetry. The names given to these groups are based, so far as possible, upon the characteristic form of each, and are intended also to suggest the terms formerly applied in accordance with the principles of hemihedrism. The order adopted is that which alone seems suited to the demands of the elementary student, the special and mathematically simple groups of the isometric system being described first. Especial prominence is given to the "normal group" under the successive systems, that is, to the group which is relatively of most common occurrence and which shows the highest degree of symmetry. The methods of Miller are followed as regards the indices of the different forms and the mathematical calculations. In the chapters on Physical and Chemical Mineralogy, the plan of the former edition is retained of presenting somewhat fully the elementary prin¬ciples of the science upon which the mineral characters depend; this is par¬ticularly true in the department of Optics. The effort has been made to give the student the means of becoming practically familiar with all the modern methods of investigation now commonly applied. Especial attention is, therefore, given to the optical properties of crystals as revealed by the micro¬scope. Further, frequent references are introduced to important papers on the different subjects discussed, in order to direct the student's attention to the original literature. The Descriptive part of the volume is essentially an abridgment of the Sixth Edition of Dana's System of Mineralogy, prepared by the author (1892). To this work (and future Appendices) the student is, therefore, referred for fuller descriptions of the crystallographic and optical properties of species, for analyses, lists of localities, etc.; also for the authorities for data here quoted. AS you have seen, I have hitherto demonstrated to you the methods for bringing to their proper and pure bodies all metals of any kind of ore that you have found and mined. If these did not now serve human needs all these operations with so much expense and labor would have been profitless and in vain. Therefore I recognize that it is necessary in speaking to touch upon all their operations and to teach you to ma& use of the metals according to the works needed. There are, for instance, some metals that would serve poorly for certain works when reduced to their fineness and perfection. Also, many artificers, in order to avoid expense, are content with having a larger quantity of metals and do not care so much about their perfection. For this reason they willingly accept mixtures of one metal with another, for example, of silver or copper with gold, of copper with silver, and likewise of tin or lead with copper. Tin is accompanied by lead to avoid spoiling its nature completely. All this, however, is done with a definite proportion by weight and not by chance. These admixtures, as I have told you in another place, are called in gold, carats, and in silver, leghe. This, in fact, means nothing but the association of one metal with another, indeed, a soiling of their purity and fineness, to which they have been brought with so much hard effort and labor. But now leaving this discussion, I shall tell you in the present book as briefly as I can, in order, first of the alloying of gold with silver or copper, and then of that of silver with copper.
