A unique feature of Potash Co. of America's A new potash property near Saskatoon, Sask., is the use of semi-dome-shaped buildings for product storage. Four domed structures, timber-framed and corrugated-sheet covered, are being built; each designed to handle 20,000 cu yd. The relatively small capacity units, PCA believes, give flexibility not only in storing different grades and sizes of product, but also in permitting greater ease in shipping products as market demands change. The domed buildings are 150-ft diam, comprised of a 16-ft-high concrete wall base, topped with a metal sheet-covered octagonal timber frame. The dome of each unit is designed to fit very closely the angle of repose of the contained material, which results in the maximum usable volume. The entire roof is flood coated with a bitumin to provide a complete weather seal.

Balancing the prodigious iron ore deposits of Western Australia are the equally vast coal resources of the Bowen series of eastern Queensland. The Bowen series is a Permian basin stretching 500 miles in a north-south line. The beginning of what will be large scale mining of the Kianga-Moura coalfields in Dawson Valley was made by the Australian company of Thiess Bros. in July 1961. Then Peabody Coal Co. of St. Louis, Mo., joined Thiess. Later, Mitsui & Co. Ltd. received a 20% interest in the firm Thiess, Peabody, Mitsui Coal Pty. Ltd. Rtitsui was to lend the company money for development. Queensland Parliament, by special act, granted the company exclusive franchise over the Kianga-Moura coalfield, an area of 350 square miles. The rights do not include other minerals. The company is to have a 120-mile railroad completed to Gladstone or some other port in seven years. It must produce at least 500,000 long tons of coal annually until the line is built, after which production is to be upped to 2 million tons. By December 1962, these arrangements were completed.

Surface mining of coal is widely condemned as a despoiler of the countryside and wastrel of land and natural resources. Yet the fact has been as widely ignored that the ingenuity of those engaged in developing the methods and equipment utilized in surface mining have made several hundred million tons of coal available for utilities and industry which could never have been mined by any other method. While doing this, the surface mining companies have recovered nearly 100% of the coal in the mining area instead of approximately 50% as is common in underground methods. Efficiency has been increasing constantly, thereby maintaining low cost to the customer. Mining has provided economic health in many areas by virtue of the direct payrolls and by the attraction of other industries to enjoy low cost, dependable fuel supplies. Surface mining of coal generally falls into two categories: contour mining, which is the result of mining in hilly or mountainous terrain where the hillside or slope limits the width of the area which can be surface mined; and area mining, which results from the surface of the land being approximately parallel with the coal seam so that a wide area may be mined in a succession of pits or open cuts.

In an address delivered at Atlantic City, N. T., Dec. 5, 1918, M. L. Requa, General Director, Oil Division of the United States Fuel Administration, said: We face a new era with all its uncertainties. We have arrived at the period of reconstruction and are face to face with the problems concerning which we have so often speculated during the past four years. In all this reconstruction work the United States must bear an important part. We are looked upon to lead the way, to blaze the trail and our actions will have a profound influence upon the rest of the world. If we are to succeed, even in part, we must not be ashamed to practise economy; we must not despise the clay of small things; the little savings; we must have the closest cooperation between Government and industry. Just as truly do we need civic awakening. All that we have ever fought for, the liberty of the world, is comprehended in the ballot; and yet how lightly we have held this great privilege! We need, if we are to reap in full the benefits of the past 18 mo., an awakened civic consciousness; a jealous guarding of government; a resolution that we will, each and all, perform to the full the duties imposed upon us by Democracy; that we will perform more completely the obligations resting upon us as citizens. During the war, industry, through sane cooperation and intelligent effort, has accomplished results possible of attainment in no other way. Government and industry have worked hand in hand and pointed the way o to future activities which, if realized, can but be most highly beneficial to all. If Government and industry are to fulfill their respective duties satisfactorily, it is obvious that there should be complete mutual confidence. Industry must not attempt to "put something over"-and Government must treat with industry upon the high plane that has characterized the public utterances of the President during the war. ESTIMATED United States crude-oil production during 1943 established a new annual peak of 1,500,000,000 barrels, a daily average of 4,118,000 barrels. This would be an increase of 315,000 barrels per day, or 8 per cent over 1942 and 7 per cent over 1941, the previous peak. During the first ten months of the year, production jumped from 3,782,000 barrels per day in January to 4,400,000 in October. Available data for the last two months of the year indicate a leveling off of this trend, with daily rates slightly above 4,400,000 barrels.

Lime made in a coal-fired rotary kiln has two distinct parts: the interior of the pebble which constitutes about 90% to 95% of the mass, and the surface dust layer which is the remaining 5% to 10%. Uncalcined carbonate and impurities in the product may be present and will not contribute to the hydration reaction. Sulfur, in the form of calcium sulfate, inhibits the hydration reaction out of all proportion to its actual weigh- percent concentration (perhaps more than 100 times). If the stone contains dolomite, this will also inhibit the reaction as its rate of hydration may be nearly three orders of magnitude slower than that of calcium oxide. Early in the hydration reaction dolomite appears practically intert, but given sufficient time, it will hydrate. The heat of reaction is nearly the same as for calcium oxide, but the time necessary for complete hydration may be hours; whereas for calcium oxide it is only fractions of a second. The dust layer on the surface also inhibits hydration as it contains a collection of compounds which have low heats of hydration. This layer can tie up additional calcium and delay or prevent its reaction. In addition to these chemical processes, an important physical characteristic of the lime is its specific surface area. This is effected by the thermodynamics of calcination and the original stone grain chemistry. All of these factors are agglomerated in the gross slaking rate of lime.

Pebble milling has been practiced in the reduction works of South Africa gold mines for well over 50 years. Originally flint pebbles were imported from Denmark to grind stamp-mill amalgamation- process tailing, which contained a good deal of extractable gold, but local operators soon found that large pieces of ore could be used for the same purpose. The ore is a hard, tough conglomerate in which quartz pebbles are cemented together by a matrix of redeposited silica interspersed with pyrite crystals. The gold, rarely visible, occurs as fine particles mostly segregated at the interface of the pebble and matrix, although a small fraction occurs within the pyrite crystals. There is seldom any gold in the pebbles themselves.

Pegasus' Gold Ltd. operates two gold/silver heap leaching operations in the Little Rockies area of Montana. The Little Rockies has produced gold from underground operations on an intermittent basis from the 1880's to the early 1950's and from the open-pits on a continuous basis since 1979. Run-of-the-mine ore is drilled, blasted, sorted, loaded and hauled. The waste is dumped and compacted into 30 meter (100 foot) fills to be used for future leach pads. The leach pads have a central drain system and the impermeable membrane is constructed of bentonite and 30 mil PVC. The plants which have beenexpanded to 4900 Ipm (1300 gpm) capacity use the Merrill-Crowe process for gold and silver recovery. 4600 liters (1200 gpm) of the 9500 Ipm (2500 gpm) spray capacity is recycled through the old leach pads for upgrading before being processed. The gold/silver precipitate is smelted and the resultant dore' is shipped to a buyerhefiner. 1983 projected production is 2,177 kg (70,000 02s) of gold at a cost of less than $10/gm.

Jasper County lies just north of the geographical center of Georgia, bounded on the west and north by the Ocmulgee River. The county seat, Monticello, is approximately 65 miles east-southeast of Atlanta and 40 miles north of Macon. It is served by the Macon-Athens branch of the Central of Georgia Railway Co. and by five paved highways converging from adjoining county seats. Farming and lumbering are the principal local occupations. About half the county is covered with pine and mixed hardwoods; a large part of the forested land is owned by the Soil Conservation Service of the Department of Agriculture in its Piedmont Land Utilization Project. The topography is one of gently rolling field and forest with occasional hills rising 100 ft or: more above the creek beds. Though annual rainfall is in the neighborhood of 60 in., most of it falls in torrential downpours of short duration which tend rapidly to erode the red soil and convert the country roads to greasy tracks of red mud.

Three rapid cold bonding production methods wing sponge iron powder as a binder for low temperature pellets have been successfully developed. These methods differ from ordinary bonding by the elimination of salt and other catalyzers, equipment corrosion and environmental pollution. Experiments show that these pellets have good metallurgical properties. A semi-industrial test has proven the laboratory results, with the continuous and stable production of metallic pellets. These methods replace traditional high temperature firing of oxidized pellets for direct reduction. As a result, the plant for oxidized pellets can be saved and substituted for grate in the grate-kiln system. Thus, 20% of the investment could be saved, and production cost may also be decreased because the production of cold bonding pellets does not need additional space.

Substituting sodium hydroxide for sodium carbonate as a binder in a glass batch yields harder pellets with a lower melting point. This paper explores the degree of NaOH substitution that is feasible, and compares pellet hardness, and amount of dusting with the degree of NaOH substitution. The effects of the the amount of soluble silicate in the pellet and residual hydroxide concentration in the pellet on pellet hardness are also studied.

In this paper, the current situation in iron ore pelletization in developing countries is reviewed. The main reasons leading to the development of pelletizing in these countries, alternative pelletizing methods and feed materials utilised, are illustrated with typical examples. The major factors which may influence the future growth are discussed and trends of development in the immediate future, till 1978, examined. The probable pelletizing capacity by 1985 is projected.

Faced with a severe disposal problem of their fines from a coal mine in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains of extreme eastern Kentucky, Eastern Coal Corporation has built a special plant to pelletize the fines into high quality coal pellets meeting the requirements of the metallurgical market. These low-ash, low-sulfur pellets measuring 3/4 x 3/8 in. contain less than 1.5% moisture and have the same stability as raw coal of the same size. Although Eastern Coal is mining 6000 tpd, the company had, until recently, no provision to recover the fine coal which was included with the plant effluent pumped to a 12-acre refuse pond. The pond, impounded behind the coarse refuse dump, rose 15 ft last year and obviously no pond can stand many years at this rate. Limited pond space in this rugged area of steep hills and narrow valleys dictated a revised disposal method.

In this research the possibility of pelletizing high grade fluorsoar fines or flotation concentrates with the use of calcined colemanite as binder is investigated, and the room temperature and elevated temperature strengths of these pellets are compared with those of pellets which are obtained by using bentonite as binder. Pellets of 10-12 mm. size and having 10% calcined colemanite showed a much higher room temperature strength than those containing 5% benonite, both being endurated at 1000°C for 15 minutes. However, when the same batch of pellets were tested at elevated temperatures of 250º to 500°C, bentonite gave better results. X-ray tests showed that in the pellets endurated at 1000°C for 15 minutes the original crystal structure of fluorite mineral is preserved.

INTRODUCTION The first commercial plant in the world to successfully produce pellets from manganese ore fines is the ICOMI pelletizing facility in northern Brazil. The main purpose of this paper is to describe the manganese pelletizing process that was developed through a cooperative R & D program by the Bethlehem Steel Corporation and ICOMI, i.e., Industria e Commercio de Minerios, S. A. The process combines heavy- media and gravity separation, reduction roasting, magnetic separation, and pelletizing on a straight-grate indurating machine. It produces high-grade manganese pellets from reviously unsalable low-grade ore fines at a rate of 20,000 tonnes (1) per month. The physical properties of the manganese pellets are comparable to those of iron ore pellets. The pelletizing plant, built at a cost of about 18 million dollars, is part of an ICOMI complex that includes manganese ore mining, an ore-washing plant, and railroad and port facilities, as well as two town sites. These two towns, one at the mine and the other at the port, each with complete community services, were built by ICOMI to serve the needs of over 1500 employees that operate the industrial complex. To give an idea of the magnitude of the investment represented by this complex, the cost up to 1957 to develop the mine and supporting services and social infrastructure was over 100 million dollars. It should be borne in mind that the above capital cost figures are in dollars of the years during which the respective projects were initiated and completed.

INTRODUCTION Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company, and its subsidiary companies, operate and manage mining, beneficiation, and pelletizing operations in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, the province of Ontario, Canada, and the State of Western Australia, Australia. The concentrates and natural ores vary mineralogically, physically and chemically. This paper describes the techniques employed in pelletizing the various concentrates and ore fines. The plant operations described are the Republic, Humboldt, Tilden, Empire and Pioneer in Michigan, the Adams and Sherman in Ontario, and the Robe River in Western Australia. Table 1 contains further details regarding design and operating capacities, commissioning dates, and participant ownerships. Allis-Chalmers grate-kiln systems are utilized in Michigan and Ontario, and Dravo straight-grate systems in Western Australia. Currently, the Empire and Tilden operations are being expanded. At Empire the additional pelletizing unit, identified as Unit IV, will have a design capacity of 8 996 metric tonne/d and is scheduled for startup May 1, 1979. The Tilden operation is being doubled with the additional pelletizing unit, identified as Unit 11, having a de- sign capacity of 12 599 metric tonne/d. Startup is scheduled for January 1, 1980. The iron ores mined by LKAB in the north of Sweden have excellent beneficiation properties. This gives LKAB a favorable position as regards the production of low silica pellets for direct reduction. LKAB has concentrated on developing and marketing grades of pellets for the Midrex-Purofer-HyL process group, i. e., such direct reduction processes carried out in a shaft furnace or a static bed using reformed natural gas as a reducing agent. The paper deals with properties and quality demands of iron ore pellets for such processes. Matters such as the effect of the residual magnetite in the fired pellets on the degree of metallization, the amount and composition of the slag phase in the pellets, the mechanism of the disintegration during reduction, the state of swelling of the pellets during the conditions prevailing in these processes, the importance of the porosity, the improvement of the reducibility and lowering of the sticking tendency of the pellets by small additions of suitable additives, and the influence of the pellet size are discussed. A special test procedure for direct reduction pellets has been elaborated by LKAB. Thus, three metallurgical properties are routinely determined separately, namely reducibility, reduction strength, and sticking. The test methods are described. Finally the present and future LKAB pellets for direct reduction are presented with respect to chemical analyses and metallurgical properties.

THE CHAIRMAN (EDWIN LUDLOW, Lansford; Pa.).-Mr. Wang's paper reminded me that some years ago I was asked if I would not go into the Tien Tsin district and take charge of Americanizing a Chinese mine. They said the trouble was that, while wages were only 9 c. a day, the coke cost $2 a ton delivered to the cars. Reading Mr: Wang's paper would indicate the need of a little Americanization in the Manchurian field. Wages are only 40 c: a day, yet the cost is $3.60 a ton. An efficiency engineer would have an excellent opportunity in that field. T. T. READ, New York, N. Gradual shifts in the center of ore production have dictated three moves for the Pend Oreille Mines & Metals Co. plant. Capacity has grown from 300 tpd to the present 2400 tpd, and the gravity process used at the original Josephine mill has long since given way to improved flotation practice. The Josephine mill, operated in World War I and converted to flotation in 1927, treated 200,000 tons of ore rating as high as 16 pct Zn. By 1935 extra ore handling warranted construction of a new mill on a lower level, and capacity was raised from 300 to 800 tpd.

Leaching or solution mining, a relatively simple and economical process for beneficiating metallic ores, is likely to find increasing application in the treatment of low-grade ores that are impractical to mine by any other means. This process may be carried out in two different ways: 1) dump leaching, where the ore is moved from its original location to be leached at another site; and 2) In-situ leaching, where the ore is leached in place by introducing the leach solution at the top, letting it flow down through the ore under gravity, and then recovering it plus the dissolved metals it contains. Whichever leaching method is used, it is almost always necessary to break up the ore before leaching. In this paper a study is reported which indicates that rock broken by an explosion-in particular, an underground nuclear explosion-is significantly more amenable to leaching then is rock broken by other methods. These results suggest that the leaching speed and efficiency could be increased by nuclear fracturing of the ore. Not only would the leach time be shortened, but the resulting increase in strength or richness of the solutions would decrease plant installation expense as well as reduce pumping and processing costs. A considerable fund of experience has been accumulated in the course of several hundred experimental underground nuclear explosions, so that the gross results of any given nuclear explosion can now be predicted with a fair degree of confidence.' From this knowledge it seems clear that, under the proper conditions, large ore bodies can be fractured much more economically-macroscopically speaking-by nuclear explosions than by other methods. The present study concentrates on smaller scale effects that is, the cracks in the chunks of rock broken by the explosion-and shows that here too, in the microscopic domain, there are important advantages to nuclear fracturing. The intense shock produced by the very fast acting, high-brisance nuclear explosive fractures the rock in a way that should significantly improve its leachability. Experimental Procedure This study compared rocks broken by nuclear explosives with rocks produced by conventional mining, quarrying, or core drilling. The test samples, granite chunks 6 to 8 in. on a side, plus core sections, came from the area of the Hardhat*2 nuclear explosion and were taken both before and after the explosion. For comparison, several samples of quarried granite were obtained from a local gravestone monument company. The general procedure was to soak the test samples in leaching solution and then determine the extent of penetration. A standard commercial copper leaching solution was used (10 gpl Cu, 10 gpl H2SO4, 5 gpl ferric Fe, 15 gpl total Fe, pH about 1.5), to which a water-soluble penetrant dye, Zyglo 1-c, had been added. Details of the procedure were as follows: 1) Sample leached in solution containing Zyglo penetrant dye. 2) Washed with water. 3) Air-dried. 4) Cut with granite wire saw. 5) One face polished with granite monument polish. 6) Sent directly to be photographed, or heated at 110°C for 2 hr and then sent to be photographed. 7) Photographed under ultraviolet light to show crack patterns. Results After 10 days of leaching at 70-75°F, the samples were removed from the solution, washed, dried, and cut in half with a granite wire saw to study the penetration of the leach solution. Since the Zyglo dye in the leach is visible under ultraviolet light, the degree of penetration of the leach (and hence the cracks in the samples) can be studied on photographs of the crosscut samples made under ultraviolet light. The photos in [Fig. 1] show how the leach solution penetrated various representative samples. Of the 71 rock samples examined, fractures were most frequent and prominent in samples from the rubble produced by the nuclear explosion [(Fig. 1D)]. Fracturing was less apparent in shaft-mined rock [(Fig. 1B)], still less evident in drift-mined rock [(Fig. 1C)], and practically nonexistent in cored or quarried specimens [(Fig. 1A)]. The samples in [Fig. lA-C] were from the same general area as the nuclear explosion, but they were obtained before the explosion. Results of the crack studies are summarized in [Table 1]. The Zyglo-treated leach solution penetrated the test samples at the rate of about 1/2 mm during the first hour, 1 mm by the end of 4 hr, 2 to 3 mm in 12 hr, and 4 to 6 mm in 10 days, showing a progressively slower rate with time.
