Oil and gas development in Mississippi during the year 1933 was rather active and a number of important wildcat wells were drilled throughout the state. Mississippi showed an increase in drilling operations during 1933. There were 58 completions from 22 counties during this period, compared with 53 completions in 10 counties during 1932. The Jackson gas field in Hinds and Rankin counties continued to be the most active area with 26 completions, resulting in 17 gas wells, 2 oil wells, and 7 dry holes, compared with 38 gas wells, 1 oil well and 5 dry holes during 1932. A further attempt to extend the producing limits of the Amory gas field resulted in a dry hole. Extensive exploration in south Mississippi has proved the existence of ample source beds and presence of an extensive sandbody near the top of Cockfield. Core tests, supplemented by extensive geophysical work, have been carried on in Jackson, George, Harrison, Pearl River and Stone counties. Exploration will be continued in 1934. The most important deep test drilled in 1933, and the deepest well ever drilled in a southeastern state, was the Eastman Gardner et al., Bank of Seminary No. 1, sec. 26-8N.-15W., Covington County. This well went through about 1300 ft. of Selma chalk, and was abandoned in the Eutaw at 8004 ft. Another interesting operation during the past year was the Foster Creek Oil Corporation's Foster Creek Lumber Co. No. 1, sec. 14-2N.-2W., in the "Eastern Conroe Trend." This test is shut down at 3687 ft. in the Catahoula sandstone and has not encountered any important shows of oil or gas. A total of 107 of the 117 gas wells completed in the Jackson gas field since its discovery in 1930 are still producing, and have a combined open flow of approximately 3,724,896,000 cu. ft. It is reasonable to assume that this area will be rather inactive during 1934 as the maximum daily production during 1933 was 3,476,000 cu. ft. The 10 wells that have gone dead were edge wells. Nickel laterite deposits are typically formed from tropically weathered mafic-to-ultramafic complexes. The resulting nickel concentration is found within soil horizons and is mineable with regular dozer units. At the time of mining, digging elevations are needed at selective mining units (SMUs) or representative dozer regions (RDRs). Moreover, for mine planning, the costs due to dilution and lost ore require mining elevations to be specified. A conditional simulation approach is used to calculate “optimum” RDR mining elevations. Multiple realizations of the ore base surface are simulated. For a single bottom surface realization, dilution and lost ore costs are calculated over the entire vertical extent of each RDR. The optimum mining elevation is the elevation where the lowest summed cost of “accepting dilution” and “wasting ore” occurs. The reported RDR dilution is the cost of mining the volume of waste located below the bottom surface and above the optimum mining elevation. The reported RDR lost ore is the cost of not mining the volume of ore above the bottom surface and below the optimum mining elevation. For all ore bottom surface realizations, optimum RDR mining elevations and their associated dilution and lost ore costs are calculated and compiled to represent production uncertainty.

The Bureau of Mines study indicates that land utilized by the mining industry for mineral extraction and processing from 1930 through 1980 amounted to 5.7 million acres, or 0.25 percent of the land mass in the United States. Land reclaimed by the industry during the same period was 2.7 million acres, or 47 percent of the land utilized. Land use by the mining industry includes surface land used for excavation or mining, for waste from underground mining, and for wastes from milling or processing operations. Data on land use for disposal of overburden waste from surface coal mines and on areas affected by subsidence associated with underground mining are included for the period 1930-71 only. The 10 leading States in total land used for mining over the 51-year period were, in decreasing order, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Ohio, Illinois, West Virginia, Florida, Indiana, California, Alabama, and Missouri. Seven mineral commodities accounting for 92 percent of land use are, in decreasing order, bituminous coal, sand and gravel, stone, phosphate rock, clay, copper, and iron ore, all predominately surface mined. Bituminous coal production was responsible for nearly half of the total area utilized. Reclamation of mined lands and waste disposal sites over the reporting period was largely on lands utilized in mining bituminous coal; 75 percent of the land used for bituminous coal production was reclaimed.

ABSTRACTRock stresses can be modified by physicochemical processes.If rock pores allow the ingress of water and oxygen, but are not large enough to permit the exit of larger molecules of weathering products, anomalous rock pressures develop. Rock masses may also be subjected to osmotic pressures developed as water diffuses into pores and joints filled with saline water. Anomalous rock pressures may also develop as gels filling pores undergo syneresis and as salts crystallize from pore solutions.

Gear pumps are very commonly used for the pumping of AN-water based emulsion products for both handling and blast loading applications. The potential major hazardous problems likely to be encountered with these pumps are: (i) high probability of friction; (ii) possibility of product confinement in the area of the bushings; (iii); high bearing failure rate; (iv) pump running dry; (v) presence of foreign material; (vi) deadheading of pump; (vii) delamination of elastomer from steel gears. Of all these possible scenarios, the no-flow situations where the pump is running dry or deadheaded have always been recognized as the most serious ones.

The New Pacific Northwest Baseball Park, now known as Safeco Field, is located directly south of the Kingdome in Seattle, Washington, and will be the new home of the Seattle Mariners baseball team. The location of the ball field is shown on Figure 1, Vicinity Map. The seating capacity is 45,600, and outfield distances are 331 feet in left, 405 feet in center, and 326 feet in right field. The overall dimensions of the stadium are 680 by 800 feet. It is bordered on the east by the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad main line. A unique aspect of this ballpark is the retractable roof with a north-south span length of 660 feet. The roof consists of three separate sections that roll on elevated rails running east-west on the north and south sides of the stadium. The soil conditions consisted of near-surface fill underlain with alluvial and Estuarine deposits to depths of 60 to 80 feet. The bearing soils consisted of very dense, glacially overridden deposits. Groundwater is 4 to 7 feet below the ground surface, and the alluvial deposits are subject to liquefaction during a strong motion earthquake.

This case history describes the foundation design and construction for the New Mississippi River Bridge, presently under construction in St. Louis, Missouri. The 1,500 ft (457.2 m) main span of the cable-stayed bridge is supported by two delta tower pylons in the river, with anchor piers on each bank. The final foundation design was completed as a part of an Alternate Technical Concept (ATC) proposal by the winning construction team, and utilized drilled shafts up to 11.5-ft (3.5-m) diameter that were socketed into very hard limestone. As part of the ATC foundation design, a full-scale, bi-directional static load test was performed to verify the design and allow use of higher resistance values. This paper presents the results of the site exploration, construction of the load test shaft, details of the load testing, and a comparison of the test results with various design parameters.

Platiniferous horizons such as the Merensky Reef that are mined chiefly for their PGE contents constitute one end member of a continuum of Ni-Cu-PGE sulfide deposits; Ni-(Cu) sulfide deposits in which the PGE may or may not be by-products represent the other end of this continuum. Although it has long been thought that PGE-rich sulfides can only be developed by magma mixing in large magma chambers, new PGE data for the Bushveld Complex suggests an alternate model to account for origin of mineralization in the worldÆs most important Pt producer. Briefly, this model suggests that PGE-rich sulfides were initially deposited at depth below the Bushveld Complex as a result of interaction of a S-undersaturated mantle magma with S-rich crustal rocks. These PGE-rich sulfides were subsequently re-dissolved by a second magma, which introduced the PGE into the Bushveld Complex magma chamber, where the PGE-rich reefs were formed due to cooling of these magmas. If this model is correct, it means that large layered mafic/ultramafic intrusions are not a prerequisite for the formation of economic PGE-rich deposits. Exploration for Merensky Reef-type PGE deposits can be greatly facilitated by documenting variations in the background PGE contents of non-mineralized rocks collected on traverses across mafic/ultramafic intrusions; the mineralized horizons occur at cross-overs in ratios such as Pd/Cu, Pd/Se and Pd/S.

At present, Russia is engaged in processing, 3new plants of hard-to-process potash ores with increased content (up to 10 - 12%) of insoluble impurities (insoluble residue ? I.R.). This required additional research to improve the process of potash ores flotation. Based on the study of the effect of dispersive properties of frother and its flow rate on the efficiency of aliphatic amines with different length of the hydrocarbon radical (as sylvite collector) there was showed the possibility to apply high molecular amine with length of hydrocarbon radical C20 ? C26 by normal temperature of circulated plant salt solution (saturated solution KCl ? NaCl ? H2O). There was designed and tested in plant conditions the modified amine collector with the length of the hydrocarbon radical C16 - C26, improving flotation of Sylvite under normal temperature of circulating salt solutions at potash flotation plants. There was made the study of the influence of the hydrocarbon radical length of alkylmorpholine on the Halite flotation from intermediate products of sylvite recleaner flotation with different content of I.R. (silicate-carbonate slimes), at normal and elevated temperature of salt solution. On the basis of the application of modified alkylmorpholine for Halite flotation, there was developed the process of further beneficiation for the intermediate products of sylvite recleaner flotation from potash ores with increased content of insoluble impurities, which can eliminate the circulation of the intermediate products in the process flow sheet of sylvinite ore processing and increase the KCl recovery into the finished product. This circular presents part I of a series of papers of a review of the literature on air conditioning in mines, with particular reference to the health, safety, and efficiency of miners. It deals with the physiological aspects of exposure to air contaminated by organic matter, noxious and toxic gases, and dusts that emanate from various sources in underground workings; part II will discuss the relation of abnormal mine temperatures and humidities to the health and efficiency of minors; and part III will describe theoretical and practical methods of air conditioning mines to correct or alleviate the conditions mentioned and will discuss the results attained by some of the systems now in use in various parts or the world.

The efficiency of an ore-processing unit depends on the consistency of the characteristics of raw material entering the plant. When the mined ore is highly variable in quality, the only way to ensure consistency is to homogenize the ore prior to feeding to the processing plant. The homogenization can generally be achieved by the bed blending operation. Given that the stockpiling and reclamation processes are very expensive, it is necessary to design the process in such a way as to minimize variabilities of specified properties of raw material. In this paper, for alternative stacking types, optimal stockpile geometry is found in three stages: First, stockpile input is simulated by sequential Gaussian simulation, and then the variance reduction ratios (VRR) as a criterion of stockpile efficiency are calculated for various stockpile geometry scenarios by a stockpile simulator written in FORTRAN. Second, multiple regression analysis is performed to model the VRR by the use of stockpile length, the number of layers and stacker speed as the independent variables. Finally, the model is an optimization problem. Decision variables are the stockpile length, the number of layers, stacker speed and stacking type. The genetic algorithms (GA) are used to minimize the VRR. The approach was demonstrated on data from an iron orebody. The problem was to reduce fluctuations of iron, silica, alumina and lime contents in the stockpile output. The results showed that the approach could be used for the bed blending design efficiently. [IN CONNECTION with its work on the conversion of coal to liquid cud gaseous fuels,3 the Bureau of Mines has always striven to keep informed of developments in this and related fields so that unnecessary duplication of effort could be prevented and so that useful ideas, presented in scientific and technical literature, could be evaluated as quickly as possible. Thus the E has compiled expensive literature and patent abstracts on the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis4 and hydrogenation d e venation of coal at elevated h temperatures and pressures.5 6 This publication differs from the references just given in that it covers patent applications, which may or may not have been approved for issuance as a patent, and also includes later material. The patent literature is, of courses, a valuable source for new ideas. German patent, have been particularly useful in this field because both processes for the complete conversion of coal to fluid fuels originated in Germany and were thoroughly investigated there because of the shortage or of indigenous fluid fuels. Among the German literature relating to these processes are patent applications. In contrast to the United States, Germany has a system in which applications are published before the final patents are issued. This arrangement permits the public to view all the applications and not just those for which a patent was granted as is done in the U.S. system. When main of the invention are judged not patentable by the German Patent Office, such documents nevertheless may contain useful ideas for scientists and engineers.]

It is said by some that the occurrence of a deposit of sulphide of antimony in Southwestern Arkansas has been known for fifteen or twenty years. Whether or not such is the case I am not prepared to say, but I am not able to find any record of such a discovery, or any analysis of antimony ore obtained from that section, published at so early a period. The present discoveries, that seem to be attracting some attention, date back to the winter of 1873-74. At that time a vein of ore was found by Mr. Robert Wolf, in honor of whom the vein was named, and still is called, "the Wolf lode." At the time of the discovery the ore was unknown to the prospector, and its composition was not thoroughly understood in that locality until samples were sent to several analytical chemists, who pronounced it sulphide of antimony—stibnite. Since the discovery of this ore there have been three mines opened, and a number of interesting minerals of the antimonial series have been found. I have had an unusually good opportunity to collect specimens from these mines; and it is owing to the constant inquiry concerning the character of these ores that I have collected for publication the results of quite a number of analyses, sufficient I trust to clearly point out their composition. This is one of the few localities in the United States where antimony ore is found in workable quantities ; I say workable quantities, because two different shipments of ore have been made to English reduction works, and in both cases excellent returns were made. The discovery of these deposits will, it is hoped, give rise to a prosperous and remunerative industry at no distant day, and when fully developed they may yield ore in sufficient quantity to supply the regulus for the home demand, thus adding wealth not only to those interested, but also to the State of Arkansas. The three mines are situated in the northern part of Sevier County, and may be reached by the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway to Fulton, thence by wagon-road to Columbus, Nashville, Centre Point, and to the mines. The Wongawilli system of mining has been in use for over 30 years and has enabled high production rates and acceptable extraction ratios to be achieved in seams less than 4 m in thickness. A modification of the Wongawilli system has been developed to permit the use of a continuous miner and mobile equipment to extract a coal seam 6 m thick. Following physical and mathematical model studies the new mining method is now undergoing field trials at Collinsville, Queensland. Progress of the field trials to date has achieved 99 per cent extraction of the upper slice by remote control operation of the continuous miner and established the feasibility of installing resin grouted wooden dowels in the coal floor to reinforce the coal septum. The method is explained in the text. Monitoring of the goaf gases as an early indication of spontaneous combustion has been incorporated in the mining cycle by placement of tubes in the goaf as the face retreats and continuous analysis of the goaf gases made at the surface by the National Coal Board tube bundle monitoring system.

It is not the primary object of this paper to treat with the scheme of prospecting in detail, but it is considered that a brief description of the broad lines is necessary so that the significance of the points to be discussed later may be appreciated.The finding of payable gold reefs on the Bendigo field resolves itself into a two-fold problem, firstly the location of quartz bodies, and secondly the location of gold shoots in such bodies. The country rock of the field has been folded and faulted, and the occurrence of known reefs is associated with the fold axes and the faulting. The "lines" of the field are the anticlinal axes, and practically all known reefs are at or near centre country. Very little work has been done on the synclines, which may have some potential value.Quartz has been introduced along the fracture systems, and gives rise to the three main types of reef met with on the field, namely, the "back," which is similar to a bedded quartz reef and is formed along a bedding plane fault; the "saddle," which forms at the crest of the anticline and has the typical shape from which it takes its name; and "spurs," which are irregular masses of quartz, making off reefs of the first two types.As the fracturing throughout the field is widespread and fairly intense, the first problem, that of finqing quartz, is comparatively simple, and any regular system of blocking out the ground will be productive of quartz bodies.*Field Superintendent, Bendigo Mines Ltd. El presente trabajo describe el comportamiento estructural y mineralización del estaño-cobre en la mina San Rafael, Puno. En este sentido, las pizarras de la formación Sandia del Ordovisco Superior, por metamorfismo de contacto con el intrusivo, han sido transformadas a hornfels, que junto a las cuarcitas se presentan algunas veces como una cubierta superficial sobre el intrusivo. Asimismo, los intrusivos y las pizarras son favorables para la mineralización de estaño, aunque los cuerpos del mineral son más definidos y persistentes en el intrusivo.

The Coffee Creek lode gold discoveries are located in the White Gold district (Dawson Range), west-central Yukon, 130 km south of Dawson City and 30 km south of the Golden Saddle gold deposit (Figure 1). Extensive structurally-controlled gold mineralization has been discovered during the 2010 and 2011 exploration drilling campaigns, highlighting this part of the Dawson Range as a significant emerging gold district. [ ] In this contribution we review the geological framework and describe the mineralization styles and metal signatures observed to date on the Coffee project. The main Coffee area is underlain by a 15 km by 4 km geochemical footprint, characterized by discrete linear gold-in-soil anomalies that correspond to various mineralized corridors. Of several mineralized areas tested in the past two drill seasons by diamond core and reverse-circulation (RC) drilling, we focus on the Supremo, Double Double, Latte and Kona zones; areas with the most information obtained from drilling thus far (Table 1; Figure 2).
