Some form of technical library is a necessity for every metallurgical plant, but its form and scope will vary with the conditions of each case. In its simplest form, it may consist of one or two mining journals and a few text books distributed amongst the staff. Again, it may be a separate establishment controlled by a clerk, the technical staff necessarily making its own research into the literature available. A still more elaborate organisation may be established both to supply information when requested and to keep the operating staff in touch with current matters of interest, and the library service of the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia is of this character.The necessity for such a service is due to several facts. The Company's interests are scattered over three States. Most of its staff members are remote from: good public library facilities and they have few opportunities for exchanging ideas verbally with other metallurgists and engineers. Then, too, the process of recovering zinc by electrolysis, is a young art of which the physical and chemical bases were far from fully known at the time the: Risdon plant was established. Most of the zinc produced is sold abroad, and this unsheltered industry can afford to miss no technical or economic development which may promote its efficiency. Add to these facts the geographical isolation of the Commonwealth and the case for an adequate library is complete.

The paper outlines the development of a solvent extraction process for the recovery of scandium, yttrium, thorium, and heavy lanthanides from waste sulphate liquor at the Port Pirie uranium treatment plant. A summary is given of known solvents for these elements, including the recently developed alkyl-phosphoric acid esters which are applicable to sulphate solutions.A kerosene solution of di- (2'-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (EHPA) has been suggested by some workers as a suitable solvent for fractionation of the lanthanides. Experimental work with this solvent showed that it could be used for initial recovery of the above elements from low concentrations in the complex sulphate liquor. In particular, scandium could be recovered as a high grade product by extraction with 0·lM EHPA, followed by a purification strip with 9N sulphuric acid, and final stripping of scandium with sodium hydroxide solution.To enable alkaline stripping to be used successfully, the kerosene solution of the reagent was modified by the addition of a small proportion of nonanol. Experimental work included laboratory scale batch tests and small pilot scale continuous tests.A proposed extension of the process for the separate recovery of individual heavy lanthanides, yttrium, and thorium is described.INTRODUCTIONAt the Port Pirie uranium treatment plant of the South Australian Government, large volumes of "barren liquor", free from 'uranium, are at present run to waste. O processo de micro soldagem se mostra eficiente para a união de Ligas com Memória de Forma (LMF) do sistema NiTi devido a alta precisão e localização do calor, diminuindo os tamanhos da zona fundida (ZF) e da zona termicamente afetada (ZTA), promovendo melhorias nas propriedades mecânicas destes tipos de juntas. Este estudo teve como objetivo geral determinar as variações das propriedades termomecânicas em juntas soldadas de fios de NiTi. Para o trabalho, fios superelásticos de uma LMF NiTi (ASTM F2063) com 0,9 mm de diâmetro, foram divididos em dois grupos: (a) fios sem tratamento térmico (NiTiA) e (b) fios com tratamento térmico a 400°C durante 20 minutos (NiTi400). Em seguida estes fios foram soldados pelo processo TIG, utilizando a microsoldadora Micromelt (EDG Equipamentos e Controles). A caracterização termomecânica dos fios íntegros e microsoldados foi realizada utilizando ensaios de calorimetria diferencial de varredura (DSC), análise dinâmico-mecânica (DMA), ensaios de tração uniaxial, microscopia óptica (MO), microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) e microindentação Vickers. Os resultados mostraram a eficiência do processo TIG ao soldar os fios NiTi de ambos os grupos. As juntas soldadas apresentaram propriedades de superelasticidade semelhante aos fios íntegros e a análise da fratura dos fios com solda mostra características dúcteis.

"In 1995, Louvicourt Mine started one of the first paste backfill operations in Canada. From 500,000 tonnes in 1995, the annual paste backfill tonnage produced reached 800,000 tonnes in 1999. The maximum throughput of the surface plant (including binders) is 3,50Ot/d with a final density of 75 to 76% solids which gives a slump of 15 to 17cm. Following the start-up of the paste backfill plant, the backfill strength performance levels were well below the pilot plant’s predictions. The introduction of ferrous slag, laboratory tests on various binder ratios with or without additives, and the desliming of the tailings enabled us to optimize the mix and operation costs. Primary and secondary stopes are filled respectively with a paste containing 4.5% and 2% binders consisting of a mixture of 20% cement and 80% ferrous slag. In certain stopes, the binder ratio may vary from 2 to 7%, but always in a ratio of 80/20. Six years after start-up, or 4.5mt of paste backfill later, this paper discusses the present operation and the major changes that have occurred over the years to optimize both the operation and the paste fill quality.INTRODUCTIONLouvicourt Mine is operated by Aur Resources Inc. which owns 30% of the shares. Its partners are Novicourt Inc. (45%, subsidiary of Noranda Inc.) and Teck Corporation (25%). Paper presented at Mineralisation in the Caledonides, the Mike Gallagher memorial meeting held in Edinburgh, 27-28 June 1996. An integration of S isotopic, fluid and mineralogical data for granitoid-related mineralisation showed that the porphyry systems had a predominantly subcrustal magma source, but the inner magma pulse of two-mica granite in the Fleet pluton was derived mainly from reduced sediments. The porphyry-style mineralisation formed from boiling fluids at high crustal levels, with a moderately saline fluid percolating down to the upper veins as they cooled but not penetrating the deeper Talnotry deposit. Veins in peripheral greywackes have a significant magmatic component but also incorporated CO2-rich components and metals released by dewatering of host sediments in response to granitoid intrusion. The low grade of regional metamorphism resulted in the significant fluid input from country rocks which led to the more exotic mineral compositions, especially where argillaceous sediments were involved

El presente trabajo señala el proyecto de remediación de los relaves mineros realizado en la relavera Ticapampa, ubicado en el Distrito de Ticapampa – Huaráz, región Ancash, con el objetivo de remediar los relaves de TICAPAMPA depositados por más de 30 años y que contaminan al río Santa, fuente principal de irrigación del Valle del Callejón de Huaylas. El proyecto comprende la extracción de contaminantes del pasivo ambiental de Ticapampa a través de la flotación de los sulfuros de fierro, y la obtención de un material inerte (con bajo contenido de sulfuros contaminantes) para la fabricación de productos cerámicos por medio de resinas recientemente desarrolladas.

In the chlorination process for TiO2 pigment production, blends of titania feedstocks such as ilmenite, synthetic rutile (SR), natural rutile, upgraded slag, and chloride-grade slag are reacted with coke and chlorine at a temperature of around 1000°C to form TiCl4 (the main product) and other waste metal chlorides. The TiCl4 is the main feed material for the TiO2 pigment-making process. Feeding different titania materials to the chlorinator affects the amount of coke and chlorine required for the process, the amount of waste generated, waste disposal costs, the amount of TiCl4 produced, and bed build-up rates. These factors influence the value of the feedstock. Generally, a higher TiO2 feedstock is more valued since less waste is generated and less reagents are consumed. To quantify the impact of different feedstocks on the chlorinator, a techno-economic model was developed to describe the chlorination process and estimate process variables at steady state. This paper describes the development of the model and studies in which the model has been used to quantify effects of using different feedstocks.

In order to address the difficulty of accurate segmentation of froth images of different sizes, a method of froth image segmentation based on highlight correction and parameter adaptation is proposed. First, a machine vision system on a single-cell flotation machine is built to collect froth images. Homomorphic filtering is used to improve the uneven brightness and shadow of the images. Fuzzy c-means (FCM) clustering is then utilized to classify similar highlights that belong to the same froth. After Otsu threshold segmentation, a parameter-adaptive morphological operation is used to extract the marker points and edge bands and correct the froth edges in the original image. Finally, the modified image is filtered by morphological reconstruction, and the highlight mark is used as the local minimum point for watershed segmentation. Three sizes of froth images are segmented in comparative experiments. The results show that the proposed method is suitable for the segmentation of froth images of different sizes. The position of the extracted segmentation line is close to reality, with average over-segmentation and under-segmentation rates for froth images of 2.6% and 6.8%, respectively. The froth image segmentation performance is stronger than that of the other methods examined.

A Two-Section Helical Pile (TSHP) is a steel pipe with two shaft sections of different diameters and with one or more helix plates near the bottom of each shaft section. TSHPs are used regularly in western Canada as foundation pockets for single and double circuit distribution power line poles. The results of a comprehensive lateral pile load test program and the field monitoring of TSHPs installed in organic soil (muskeg) over soft clay are presented in this paper. A total of nine full scale lateral load tests were carried out, including seven tests using TSHPs with different diameters and embedment depths, and two tests using one-section helical piles. The prime objective of the study was to evaluate the lateral resistance of TSHPs installed into very soft organic soil (muskeg) overlying soft clay soils, to compare their lateral resistance relative to one-section helical piles and to compare the measured and the estimated lateral resistances using p-y curves. In order to provide sufficient soil data for analysis, the subsurface soil stratification was evaluated using two different techniques including; Cone Penetration Tests (CPT) and Portable Soil Probe Tests (PSPT). The two testing techniques were also compared and evaluated. This paper summarizes subsurface soil conditions, pile configuration, helical pile installation procedure, testing setup and results.

LOCATION AND HISTORY The Lakeshore Copper property is located on the Papago Indian Reservation approximately 30 miles South of Casa Grande, Arizona. This major porphyry type deposit was discovered by El Paso Natural Gas Company in 1966. Following an extensive diamond drilling program, El Paso invited several mining companies, including Hecla, to examine the property with a view towards participation. Hecla's examination, and the attendant feasibility studies, led to agreements, which were finalized in September 1969, whereby Hecla would acquire a 50% interest in the property, and would act as operator. The Lakeshore deposit covers an area approximately 3,000 feet in width by 6,000 feet in length. It consists of an upper zone of disseminated copper oxides, averaging approximately 100' in thickness overlying a zone of disseminated copper sulfides up to 1,000 feet thick. Near the base of the disseminated ore is a blanket like zone of high grade copper sulfides, referred to as the tactite ore body. The mine is being developed to produce approximately 6,500 tons per day of oxide ore and 9,000 tons per day of sulfide ore. This represents a total daily production rate of 15,500 tons per day, which will be achieved by underground mining methods using rubbertired dieselpowered mining equipment. DEVELOPMENT LAYOUT The mine is being developed by two parallel 15° decline tunnels. The declines were collared 5,000 feet southeast of the ore body, and are being driven in a northwestery direction, to pass beneath the tactite ore zone. Geological mapping on the Canadian Shield in northeastern Alberta outlined severalgranitoid rock massespotentially suitable as building stone. A particularly attractive prospect, the Chipewyan Red Granite, was subjected to an aerial survey and ground check. The petrologic and fracture characteristics critical for quarrying and use as a building stone were assessed in the course of detailed mapping at two of the most favourable sites. The extension of good rock was tested to shallow depths at one site by shallow diamond-drill coring. , The Chipewyan Red Granite displays a warm red colour, medium grain size and fairly massive texture, and takes a good polish. Deleterious geologic features studied in outcrop and subjected to structural analysis included regular joint systems, quartz veins, pegmatite dykes, basic shear zones and fault zones. Many of these key geologic features are systematic and hence predictable for stone quarrying purposes; other features, such as irregular fracelM tures, are non-systematic and arefar less predictable. The megascopic structural features studied show similar preferred orientations which appear to be collectively related to the tectonic history.

Several drum-type, low-intensity dry magnetic separators have recently been described 1,2,3,4 all of which share at least two generic similarities. The magnet consists of a multiplicity of poles of alternating polarity and, the speed of the drum shell, relatiw to the magnet, is such that the magnetics are agitated through rotation of the magnetic particles around their individual axes. The speed of the drum relative to the magnet (differential speed) determines the frequency of the field reversals. For effective agitation this frequency generally has to be above a specific value, which varies according to the mean particle size of the magnetics. With separators of small diameter, say less than 11/2 ft., a sufficient differential speed for treatment of fine magnetite can be attained only by rotating both the magnet and the drum separately; separators of large diameter may attain sufficiently high differential speeds with stationary magnets. Separators of large diameter thus have the advantage of simplicity of design. The capacity of a separator of this type is directly proportional to the speed of the shell. As the centrifugal force opposing the magnetic force increases at a slower rate than the peripheral speed of the shell when drum diameter is increased, large drums can be operated with higher peripheral speeds. Thus they have a higher capacity than smaller drums. Separation is also a statistical phenomenon, i.e. the grade of concentrate improves as the number of agitations or rotations of the magnetic particles per separation increases. As separators of large diameter have space for a large number of magnets they are best suited for production of optimum grade concentrate. The statements above are general clues For separator design. In the following an expression IS derived showing a more exact relationship between the pertinent separator variables. As both magnetic attraction and centrifugal forces are directly proportional to the volume of the affected bodies, complications in mathematical analysis, arising from variable particle size, are avoided by considering the force per unit volume of affected material. In the Summer of 2011, emergency repairs to the Jefferson Memorial North Plaza and Seawall were completed. These repairs were necessitated by settlement and lateral movement of the seawall and North Plaza which prompted the National Park Service (NPS) to initiate an investigation as to the possible causes of the movement, and commission a design for its mitigation. Information gathered from extensive instrumentation on site led to the design of a movement mitigation scheme that included demolition of the Ashlar Seawall and reconstruction of a new seawall. The new seawall foundation is an A-Wall consisting of vertical caissons and battered pipe piles connected to the seawall itself. The scheme provides resistance to future vertical and lateral movement of the North Plaza and the new seawall. Repair to the seawall and plaza began in December 2009, and was completed in August 2011. This paper discusses the mechanisms believed to be responsible for settlement and lateral movement, summarizes the procedure followed for design of the mitigation, and describes the construction methods and some challenges faced during the repair.

In an environment of lower zinc prices, falling revenues and reducing zinc feed grades, Century mine implemented a fast-tracked capital upgrade program in less than 15 months. The program was designed to increase ore milling throughput capacity by 20 per cent and optimise the capacity of the flotation plant to increase zinc recovery by approximately 2.5 per cent whilst maintaining final zinc concentrate grade.A key aspect of this program was minimising capital expenditure by better utilising existing capacity and only adding capacity where absolutely required to address critical processing bottlenecks. By gaining an understanding of plant process bottlenecks and future ore blends, and by carefully selecting appropriate technologies for particular specific flotation applications, maximum return on minimal capital investment was achieved.The close collaborative work achieved between the metallurgy processing department and other operational departments on-site was also critical to the success of this project. This work increased the mining and processing capacity of the mine and port site respectively, such that the full value of the process plant modification could be achieved.Capital payback on this investment was achieved in approximately three and a half months.This case study demonstrates the extra value to a mining business that can be achieved through fully understanding the mining/processing value chain and by careful targeted action to address critical bottlenecks in the processing chain from the mine through to the port site.CITATION:Akroyd, T J, Wynn, R and Costa, C, 2014. In deep and highly-stressed coal mining, advanced design practices are used to minimize the potential for damaging events to occur. Despite these design efforts, the hazard of coal mine bumps can not be completely eliminated. This paper will review current and historic work practices used internationally to minimize the hazard to miners from mining in conditions which could produce a bump. These site specific work practices have a common base in monitoring for conditions which could result in a bump and application of controls to prevent the occurrence or minimize the severity of an event where miners are working. Monitoring practices range from purely observational to semi quantitative. Control methods attempt to initiate events in a controlled manner, absorb the energy of a potential event or reduce the potential for or magnitude of an event by altering the stress conditions of the mine workings. Building from the experiences of other coal fields, an empirical framework to manage the potential hazard of coal mine bumps can be developed to enhance the level of safety provided by prudent mine design.

Recently more and more attentions are paid to high pressure hydrogen quenching (HPHQ) for its advantages such as environmental friendliness, low distortion, etc, compared to oil and water quenching. In HPHQ process, heat transfer coefficient (HTC) usually varies from part surface to surface because of the intense variation of gas velocity around the part. This article studies the effect of HTC distribution on part distortion after HPHQ and shows that finite element simulations considering HTC distribution predict different distortion from these without considering HTC distribution. It is also pointed out in this article that HTC distribution can be optimized by adjusting part orientation and HPHQ condition so that part distortion is minimized.

There was a time when an occasional failure of a tailings embankment was considered an acceptable risk associated with mining activities. This is not the case anymore. A major tailings failure today could result in the indictment of mine officials, huge fines and a possible site closure due to the loss of operating permits. As a result of this changed operational environment, tailings disposal facilities must be operated with these potential consequences in mind. Physical controls for tailings embankments are prohibitively expensive. However, the nuclear industry has developed a system of administrative controls as an alternative to physical controls. Administrative controls may be defined as control of actions, through organizations and management, using written procedures, record keeping, review and audit to assure operation of a facility in a safe manner (10 CFR 50). Administrative controls can reduce the cost of operating tailings impoundments, as well as increase the level of confidence in these facilities.
