O trabalho apresenta estudos de cenários técnico e econômico para a implantação de uma pequena fábrica cerâmica, através do estudo de caso de uma prospecção de argila vermelha no interior do Pará. O estudo consistiu na execução de sondagem à trado (ST) na área, para cálculo volumétrico da reserva, e recolhimento de amostra para caracterizações em laboratório. A argila coletada foi submetida a análises do teor de umidade, química (Fluorescência de Raios-X) e mineralógica (Difratometria de Raios-X). Um cenário para uma empresa entre micro e pequena produtora de cerâmica foi estabelecido visando estimativas preliminares para um possível empreendimento. A análise de cenários levou a uma possibilidade de implementação de uma unidade fabril de cerâmica com capacidade produtiva de até 140 mil peças/mês. Restrições quanto ao tipo de produto desejado e a característica da argila prospectada devem ser consideradas, podendo ser necessário a mistura de argilas de base “gorda”, com maior quantidade de argilominerais.

Mining companies normally establish exploration and research programs originated with actions in embryonic stage. At their early stages of development, these exploration and technological activities are subject to uncertainties that need, first, to be resolved, deciphered or, at least, mitigated for information reporting; and later, for valuation reporting. Under these circumstances, these exploration activities follow a sequence of development phases that range from exploration work to the profile, conceptual, and finally to basic engineering phases and construction. For information reporting, the International Template for Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves integrates the minimum standards being adopted by the relevant professional bodies in Australia, Canada, South Africa, Chile, USA, UK, Ireland, and other European countries which set up the Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards (CRIRSCO, www.crirsco.com). These standards are based on the progressive collection of relevant information to reduce present and future uncertainties over time under a context of transparency, materiality, and technical competence. For valuation reporting several procedures have been disclosed and applied. However, in the last decades financial instruments such as real options, decision analysis, and games theory have developed into a niche of great potential for mine valuation applications. The objective of this paper is to provide a summary of the information reporting standards prepared by the Chilean National Commission for the Qualification of Competent Persons in Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves and show a procedure and an application of real options to the valuation of the sequential development phases of a mine asset from the exploration stage through up to full development.

In the light of the discovery of the new super-conducting YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO), reactions in the Y2O3¬CuO-BaO system at 1300°C was investigated. The search was for any new phase that may be formed in the system at 1300°C (only 950°C reactions are known so far). 35 mixtures of different compositions were prepared and heated at 1300°C. No new phase was obtained. It was found that YBCO is decomposed at this temperature and Y2O3 and BaCO3 are the major components in the solid obtained after firing in air. However, on cooling the melt slowly and annealing at 950°C YBCO reforms. Such reactions on cooling might have implications on processing of the superconductor YBCO for practical applications as well as on its crystal growth by flux method.

Tailings from mines and industries impose danger to the environment as evidenced by the recent failures of tailing storage dams. The tailings are mostly non-plastic with silt-size particles, but their behavior is largely dependent on the extreme void ratios of the material. Hence, the critical state provides an appropriate perspective in explaining the behavior of these geomaterials. Based on a comprehensive dataset of non-plastic tailings and non-plastic soils, an attempt has been made here to correlate critical state parameters to extreme void ratios and stress parameters. A hybrid algorithm with multi-objective feature selection (MOFS) and extreme learning machine (ELM) was used to establish the correlation and to identify the most influential input parameters. Based on the information from the proposed hybrid algorithm, a comprehensive prediction model is proposed using multi-gene genetic programming (MGGP) algorithm to facilitate quick estimation of critical state parameters. The performance of both models has been assessed using several performance metrics. The results from the study indicate that hybrid MOFS algorithms perform very well in the prediction of critical state line parameters and the identification of influential features. The findings of the study have significant implications for future research on the safe management of tailing storage facilities.

The purpose of this publication is to discuss grounding mediums and the phases of grounding related to corrosion and cathodic protection. The material presented is believed to contribute to a better understanding of this subject. It also indicates more effective methods of reducing corrosion damage to metal structures and equipment in the mining industry by cathodic protection. The authors do not intend to discuss technical aspects but rather to explain the general principles of this method of inhibiting corrosion. The relationship between soil resistivity, protective grounding, and corrosion is presented. Corrosion causes the annual loss of billions of dollars; which can be greatly reduced. Losses in the mineral industry can be excessive owing to the extensive use of direct-current power, the presence of considerable dampness, and the frequent, indiscriminate use of dissimilar metals.

To achieve safe and healthy working conditions in shaft sinking operations, ventilation, and where necessary cooling, must be provided. These requirements are considered for sinking vertical, sub-vertical and decline shafts. Regulatory requirements, determining air volumes and amount of cooling required, the various ventilation methods used such as force, exhaust, twin columns, air reversal using four gate systems and the equipment required to achieve this, are discussed. Consideration is also given to the sinking of single and twin declines using diesel equipment, calculating the air volumes required to dilute pollutants and the various methods for achieving this. Also discussed is the importance of having early ventilation design input to the overall design of the mine. In many cases ventilation can be the prime determinant for the size and configuration of the shafts or declines that have to be sunk.

"The Marmara Ironworks was not the earliest ironworks in Ontario, but it was distinguished from other early works in a number of ways. It was established on an ambitious scale as a self-sufficient and, for the time, sophisticated community. In effect it was an iron plantation on the scale and scope of those at Hopewell, Pennsylvania and Saugus, Massachusetts(1). It was, besides, the only one of the few early ironworks in Upper Canada which operated almost to the end of the nineteenth century, albeit in fits and starts, and which used magnetic ores rather than bog iron ores (limonite). Furthermore it is the only works which has produced archaeological interest over a number of years. The ironworks is on the east bank of the Crowe River near Highway 7, on Lots 7 and 8, Concession 4, Marmara Township, Hastings County, Ontario. It is the property of the Village of Marmara, and the extant remains encompass about 2. 5 acres of the original 2000 or so which made up the original grant. The mineral riches of the Canadian Shield had been known since the days of the Jesuit missionary-explorers. A consortium headed by Alexander Henry and the Duke of Gloucester planned to exploit the copper near Sault Ste. Marie during the last part of the eighteenth century, but nothing came of the venture(2). This attempt may have grown out of Lord Dorchester's suggestion that private enterprise be encouraged in order that the iron ore which ""abounds"" in Canada might be exploited(3). John Graves Simcoe, the first Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada was also anxious to see iron working develop. Simcoe was eager to encourage many enterprises, among which ""the development of iron mines""(4) - Governor Gore had been approached by John Mason for help with his ironworks in Norfolk County (5). Three Americans had applied for permission and support to erect an ironworks on the Gananoque River at the falls to become known as Furnace Falls. They were granted 1000 acres of land in fee simple to encourage their endeavor(6). Sir Peregrine Maitland, only a few months after taking up his duties as Lieutenant Governor in 1818, intended to visit the ""bed of iron ore on the Crow River"" (7) - Maitland was to provide a good deal of support, both moral and substantive, to Charles Hayes when he came to Canada in 1820."

THE object of the work was to increase the capacity of the plant and, if possible, to reduce costs of the actual unit grinding while doing so. The accompanying assays of an infra-sizer analysis of the cyanide tail (Table l) illustrate the problem in hand. The cyanide tail is a combination of two products, gangue and FeS2. The assay alters by virtue of a change in gold value due to grinding and the relative quantity of FeS2 in the sizes, which itself varies with the grind. The disposal tail is the residue after the cyanide tail is scavenged by flotation, most of the pyrite being removed for roasting. It presents a somewhat different problem, since grinding gangue is all gain, but -10 micron FeS2 does not float nearly as well as + 10 product. This results in compromise in the final size to be aimed at. Extra grinding has hardly any appreciable effect on the gold extraction from the FeS2. "Hydralift Scanmec introduced early in the eighties a new and different mill design for very large grinding mills. The design described has actually no size limitation upwards and is so far suggested with motor power up to 40 MW. The mill is furnished with gearless ring motor drive transmission. It is totally fabricated, without heavy castings. The first installation, an 8, 1 MW ball mill dia. 6,5 m x 9,65 m length, has been in continous operation in 13 years without problems. Total grinding costs has been reduced with 3 0% compared to traditional smaller mills. Reductions has been achieved in maintenance cost, power consumption, liner wear and grinding media consumption.So far 3 ball mills of the described design are delivered and in operation, one grinding Iron ore and two grinding Nickel ore.IntroductionThe design of mills for mineral ore dressing has basically been unchanged since grinding in mills started some I 00 years ago, in spite of the fact that mills have grown larger and larger. This has resulted in structural and mechanical problems, causing expensive failures and loss of production.Hydralift Scanmec engineers were designing mills for more than 20 years according to the old «rules». As they experienced interest for an increase in the mill size at the time when reports about failing mills were published, they started analyzing the different mill parts to find new solutions. One goal was to only use elements from proven technology in the new design. Two key items were ring motor (wrap around motor)(Isch et al. 1977, Meintrup and Klein 1982, Ranze 1983) and large diameter pad bearings (wrap around bearings)(Fuller 1984), both acknowledged from other industries."

To analyze the behavior of minor elements in the copper smelting process, the phase relations and the activities of arsenic and antimony in the miscibility gap of Cu-Fe-S-X (X = As or Sb) system have been determined at 1473K by the quenching method and the double Knudsen cell- mass spectrometric method, respectively. The experiments have been conducted for the charges in the miscibility gap with different mass%Fe/mass%Cu ratios with varying arsenic or antimony content. The activity measurements indicate that the arsenic activities in both the metal and matte phases show extremely negative deviation from the ideal behavior. The Raoultian activity coefficients at infinite dilution in the metal and matte phases are found to be almost constant against the charges in the miscibility gap, and they are 4.3 x 10-3 and 5.5 x 10-2 for the metal and matte phases, respectively. Moreover, the activity measurements of antimony show an activity value larger than that of arsenic but it still deviates negatively from Raoult's law. The activity coefficients of antimony at infinite dilution are found to be 1.2 x and 2.2 x 10-1 for the metal and matte phases, respectively. The vapor pressures of the predominant As, AS2, AsS, Sb, Sb2, and SbS species in the gas phases of arsenic and antimony, respectively, equilibrated with the immiscible solutions have been calculated on the basis of the determined activity coefficients and they are very small at less than 1 Pa, even when their contents in the metal phase are increased up to 10 mass%.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Huoqiu iron ore field in north-west Anhui province is located in the south-east margin of the North China Craton and hosts large iron resources. Orebodies are hosted in Neoarchean amphibolite facies metamorphic rocks, forming silicon-iron bands from north to south. The area is dominated by an Early Precambrian basement consisting of Neoarchean grey gneisses, amphibolites and metasediments. The gneisses are similar with assemblages of Trondhjemite-Tonalite-Granodiorite in compositions and intercalated with amphibolites. Igneous zircons from gneisses and amphibolites have U-Pb ages of 2.86 and 2.75 Ga respectively, which are interpreted as the crystallisation ages of their protolith. Zircons from amphibolite and gneiss have eHf(t) values of 2.4–15.5 and -3.0–1.5 respectively. The tDM2(Hf) model ages of the gneiss range from 2.87 to 3.14 Ga, which is consistent with tDM1(Hf) ages of amphibolite (2.84–3.16 Ga). The U-Pb-Hf isotopes thus confirm that the gneisses were generated by partial melting of amphibolite. Two granites produce two group Hf isotopic compositions. The older one (1916 ± 42 Ma) has eHf(t) values and tDM1(Hf) ages of -9.4–3.4 and 2.24–2.71 Ga respectively, whereas the younger one (1823 ± 41 Ma) shows a large variation in eHf(t) values of -18.1–12.5 and tDM1(Hf) model ages of 1.73–2.92 Ga. Geological and geochemical characteristics indicate that the Huoqiu banded iron formations are a Superior-type iron formation rather than an Algoma-type as previously considered.CITATION:Yang, X, Liu, L and Wang, B, 2015. The comminution in a high-pressure roller mill is modeled by an energy-based population balance approach considering three aspects of breakage taking place in the active zones of the mill: the interparticle breakage in the high-compression zone, the breakage at the edges of the rolls, and the pre-breakage in the acceleration zone. Together with an appropriate model of classification, this model can be used to simulate steady-state performance of closed-circuit grindings with high-pressure roller mill. After a brief description of the basic modeling approach, the algorithm of the steady-state calculation for a generalized grinding-classification circuit is presented, from which the circuit configurations commonly met in industrial practice can be derived. With an iron ore as feed material for example, simulation results are shown and discussed in respect of circulating load, specific energy consumption and product fineness for closed-circuit grindings under various operating conditions. The effects of stressing intensity, working gap, classifier parameters as well as circuit configuration on the overall circuit performance are investigated systematically by means of computer simulation.

The classical slope analysis and a statistical technique were used in order to determine the iron complexes formed in the organic phase during the extraction of Fe(III) from Fe-Ni-Co sulfate solutions with Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) in kerosene. Equilibrium constants for the extraction based on these complexes were also calculated. The complexes determined were of the general form (Fe(OH)3-nRn?sHR)x' where n varied between 1 and 2.5 and s between 0 and 3, and both were found to be decreasing as the iron loading in the organic phase increased. Values of 1,2 and 3 were generally found for x, indicating that the complexes were monomers, dimers and trimers.

I presume that the questioner is not asking about the reduction of sulfate in groundwater to hydrogen sulfide as a result of biological activity promoted by organics in the grout hardener and that the question relates to sulfate attack on cementitious grout systems. For the project in Spain presented in my paper, we used a very high pulverized fuel ash (PFA) content in the cementitious material. This gives good sulfate resistance and indeed the chemical interaction will actually cause the permeability to drop for about 50 years without any question of sulfate attack and damage to the whole thickness of the grout - of course there will be attack at the exposed face of the grout where it is in contact with the contaminated groundwater. The mix had over 75% PFA, and also a very high overall cementitious content. The mix was the contractor's design and showed excellent behavior in laboratory proving trials. In grouts as distinct from concrete, PFA gives significantly better sulfate resistance than ground granulated blast furnace slag which is often used in Europe as a component of bentonite-cement mixes for slurry trench cut-off walls.

"In this investigation, the phosphorus distribution ratios in the CaF2 system and B2O3 system dephosphorization slags for high-phosphorus hot metal pretreatment were measured by an indirect method under laboratory conditions. Firstly, the phosphorus distribution ratio between liquid slag and solid iron was measured, and then the phosphorus distribution ratio between liquid slag and hot metal was calculated. Phosphorus capacity was calculated in terms of the composition and optical basicity of the slag. Dephosphorization slag was also studied by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive analysis, and X-ray diffraction analysis. The experimental results show that the phosphorus capacity of the B2O3 slag system is much greater than that of the CaF2 system. It is demonstrated thatB2O3 can completely replace CaF2 as fluxing agent for high-phosphorus hot metal pretreatment. With CaF2 as fluxing agent, the phosphorus capacity increases with increasing CaO content in the slag, but the phosphorus distribution ratio decreases. B2O3, when used as fluxing agent, can react with high melting point phases such as 2CaO·SiO2 and 3CaO·P2O5 in the slag to form new phases with low melting points such as 11CaO·B2O3.4SiO2, 2CaO·B2O3.SiO2, and Ca9.93(P5.84B0.16O24) (B0.67O1.79), thereby acting as a fluxing agent. When the ratio of w(B2O3)/w(CaO) is 0.16, the phosphorus distribution ratio reaches its maximum value, that is, the dephosphorization ability of the slag is at its maximum. IntroductionAs international iron ore prices continue to rise, the development of China's steel industry is facing a lot of pressure. Against this background, development and utilization of domestic high-phosphorus iron ore resources is particularly important. When highphosphorus iron ore is used in ironmaking, the phosphorus content in the hot metal can reach 0.35% or more, and the hot metal must be pretreated. For hot metal with 0.08–0.10% dissolved phosphorus, the traditional hot metal dephosphorization pretreatment technologies are relatively mature. However, when using these methods to dephosphorize hot metal containing 0.35% P or more, the amount of dephosphorization slag can reach 100–150 kg per ton of hot metal. Furthermore, the traditional dephosphorization methods require the addition of large amounts of CaF2 as fluxing agent, and this results in high fluoride levels in the dephosphorization slag. The fluorine in the slag can partially dissolve in water and thereby causes high fluoride concentration in the water and soil. Once the fluoride is absorbed by humans or animals, it can result in toxic effects on the central nervous system and myocardium. In addition, fluoride can accumulate in the environment, and thereby pose a health risk to animals and humans through the food chain (Li, 2007; Liu, Wang, and Dong, 2011, Diao, 2013). The objective of this research is to replace CaF2 with B2O3 as fluxing agent while achieving the expected goals of hot metal pretreatment."

From the massive equipment that moves the earth, to the parts that keep the equipment moving, it was all on display for more than 35,000 people who at-tended MinExpo 2008 at the Las Vegas Convention Center Sept. 22-24. In the largest show in the illustrious history of MinExpo, the success of the recent commodity boom was reflected in the more than 55,700 hm2 (600,000 sq ft) of floor space that was jam-packed with nearly 1,300 vendors. Among them, the makers of the industry?s largest machines, displaying their latest and greatest trucks, shovels, excavators, drills and other mining equipment. During the nearly decade-long commodities boom, equipment makers have worked hard to keep up with demand while also investing heavily in research and development. The beneficiaries of this R&D is the end user who saw first-hand at MinExpo 2008 the many advances that have already been made in safety, comfort and productivity from all the manufacturers. R&D has also helped spark more talk of automation, which is being used already at some of the world?s largest mines. Caterpillar and Komatsu have worked with the technology in surface mining and Bucyrus and Sandvik are among the industry leaders applying the science of automation to underground mines. Technology has in-creased greatly since the idea of moving massive equipment remotely was first knocked around and the idea of entire fleets operating around the clock seems to be getting closer to reality. But, until that happens, MinExpo attendees were treated to a show that featured some of the most impressive current machines the industry has to offer. In the largest booth space of the convention, Caterpillar (www.cat.com) displayed the culmination of an ambitious $280-million dollar investment, with the introduction of its new mining fleet of four new trucks. The F-series was un-veiled with common features in safety, cabs, engines, frames and bodies and Tier 2 compliant engines. The F series also features a return to the electric drive option. ?When our customers asked us for improvements to our mining trucks, we responded by making a record investment in every single truck in our line, as well as the increased capacity to produce more of them,? said Cater-pillar group president Stu Levenick. ?New technologies have allowed us to make trucks more reliable, easier to maintain and more friendly to the operator and to the environment.? The 793-series is in the 218- to 227-t (240- to 250-st) class that will be available in both mechanical (793F) and electric (793F ac) versions. The electric drive-only 313- t (345-st) 795F was also introduced, while the flagship 797B truck is in the process of being replaced by the new 797F mechanical drive, maintaining its 345- to 363-t (380- to 400-st) target payload. Completing Caterpillar?s new mining truck line will be new versions of the 785 and 789 mechanical drive trucks. The next generation of trucks will be phased into production during the next two years, with the Cat ac drive models expected to go into production in late 2010. As part of the pre- and post - shot mine examination at Project GNOME , acceleration data were recorded underground from a series of chemical explosive shots . The cube root of the charge weight was used to scale acceleration and distance because charge weight was not constant . Regression analysis of particle acceleration - distance data gave the following propagation equation : A W1 /3 = 5.10 x 105 ( R / W¹ / 3 ) −2 .43 The quantity A W1 /3 is scaled particle acceleration expressed in g's - lbs¹ / 3 , and R/W1 /3 is scaled distance expressed in ft / lbs¹ /3 Data obtained from the nuclear explosion were scaled and fall within one standard deviation of the calculated propagation law for the smaller shots . Cube root scaling laws were adequate to group acceleration data from explosive charges varying by a factor of more than 1 x 10 in charge weight and over shot - to - gage distances varying from 100 to 46,000 feet . Data obtained from a series of small tests provided sufficient data from which reliable predictions of acceleration could be made for the large nuclear explosion .
