The first part (lH of this work dealt with the process of recrystallization of single crystals of lead after deformation by creep, as revealed by macroscopical examination. It was shown that when recrystallization commenced, a crystal, termed the primary crystal, started to grow at the edge of the specimen and extended into the body of the specimen along the slip planes. At some stage during the growth of this crystal, other crystals appeared at the boundary of this first crystal and fragments of the parent crystal. From thispoint, recrystallization was accelerated with relatively rapid necking down of the specimen until fracture occurred.All those crystals formed after the primary crystal were given the term secondary crystals. In the present paper is given a detailed account of the orientations of the primary and secondary crystals.EXPERIMENTAL METHODThe size of the test pieces and the manner of loading were given in the previous paper (1). X-ray back reflection photographs were taken of the individual primary and secondary crystals and from them were determined the orientations. "This paper proposes a new direction to implement an underground mine communication system. It presents actual underground communication systems and discusses their technological limits. A new system based on a wireless local area network (WLAN), together with its main systems characteristics, is then proposed. This paper also presents an experimental protocol for radio frequency propagation measurements. Finally, the paper describes the projected implementation of a WLAN in an experimental mine. IntroductionDuring the last decade, a number of Canadian mining companies have invested in modern communications systems in order to automate processes and reduce operational costs. Safety of miners is also a concern, regulated by health and safety regimes.Underground communication systems rely mainly on analog technology (especially the leaky feeder). Digital upgrades have been made to modernize this technology using a coaxial or fibre optic cable to transmit voice, documents, commands, controls, and video. Therefore, all wired equipment can benefit from an increase in efficiency from the digital technology.However, when it comes to mobile equipment, the only medium was, and is, still radio waves. With the advent of the wireless local area network (WLAN) standard, one can use a technology similar to that of the cellular phone to connect transparently different equipment. WLAN enables the transmission at rates higher than 2 M bits of voice, documents, commands, controls, identification, and of course, digital video. "This summary of international mineral exploration activities for the year 2014 draws upon information from industry sources, published literature and specialists in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Minerals Information Center. The summary provides data on exploration budgets by region and mineral commodity, identifies significant mineral discoveries and areas of mineral exploration, discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry and presents analyses of exploration activities performed by the mineral industry.Three types of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. current dollars provided by SNL Metals & Mining (SNL) of Charlottesville, VA; 2) regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2014 as compiled by the USGS and 3) regional events that affected exploration activities including economic, social and political conditions, which were derived from published sources and discussions with USGS and industry specialists. Commodity and regional compilations are presented in this summary. Because multiple sources are used to develop these compilations, statistics may differ depending on the source and type of data that are being reported.The SNL data summarize planned company budgets for worldwide exploration activities in 2014 for 19 nonfuel mineral commodities based on company surveys. Research focused on precious metals (gold, platinum-group metals and silver), base metals (cobalt, copper, lead, molybdenum, nickel, tin and zinc), bulk commodities (iron ore, phosphate and potash), and specialty mineral commodities (diamond, lithium, niobium, rare-earth elements, tantalum and uranium). Information on uranium exploration activities was included for the first time in 2007. Data on lithium, niobium, phosphate, potash, rare-earth elements and tantalum were compiled for the first time in 2010 because of their increased significance. Since 1999, companies with exploration budgets of $100,000 and greater were included in the SNL compilations. SNL budget estimates exclude bauxite, coal and oil and gas. Exploration budget estimates for iron ore have been compiled since 2011 but reported separately. The 2014 SNL company survey is reported by SNL to cover an estimated 95 percent of the world’s nonferrous, nonfuel mineral exploration budgets. The 5 percent that is not covered includes companies that chose not to participate in the SNL survey, private companies that do not publish their budget data, and government-funded exploration activities"

Durante muitos anos, as ligas convencionais foram base para o desenvolvimento de novos materiais metálicos, com propriedades melhores que as até então conhecidas. No entanto, na última década, as Ligas de Alta Entropia (LAE) trazem uma nova abordagem para a produção de materiais avançados, com excelentes propriedades e potencial para diversas aplicações. Em particular, as ligas do sistema Al-Co-Cr-Fe-Ni também se destacam por promoverem uma classe de LAE de baixa densidade e têm sido foco de inúmeros estudos no meio acadêmico atual. O presente artigo traz um estudo de otimização da preparação metalográfica da liga AlCo2Cr2FeNi2, a partir de 3 rotas diferentes de polimento e suas análises via microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) e difração de Raios X (DRX). Além disso, foram avaliadas as modificações estruturais da liga em função de um tratamento térmico de solubilização (1050 ºC por 1 hora seguido de resfriamento em água). Os resultados das análises demonstraram a rota de polimento eletrolítico promissora para a caracterização da LAE em questão e a análise conjunta dos resultados de DRX e MEV, somado ao confronto com a literatura, permitiram identificar as fases presentes e suas modificações microestruturais em função do tratamento térmico.

If it had not been for the almost unbelievable adventures that came before and after, the last ten months of 19 15 would have been exciting enough for anyone. As it was they were a cheerful interlude. I spent most of the time on our Warren operations catching up on a lot of underground work and visiting Ajo every few weeks to see if my Chuquicamata visit might help solve the New Cornelia problem. While the difficulties were finally solved, at times they seemed almost hopeless. About all I could do to help was to make sure that the ore sent to the pilot plants represented the average ore that must be treated in the final 5000 tpd mill. Dr. Ricketts and John Greenway worked tirelessly with the best consulting advice they could obtain. Credit for the final success was due chiefly to their efforts. Since our old group had given up its "Merry Widow" home in Warren, a few of us got rooms in the company-built Cole Building over the Warren grocery store. This included Jim Lewis, Roy Mitchell, Steve Landon, Paul Stevens, and Hubert d'Autremont who came from Duluth to join our legal staff. Later we rented a small house two blocks from the Calumet and Arizona office. With the now flourishing country club only a 10-min walk away, and an electric car running to it every half hour or so, we were able to give parties in return for the hospitality of our friends. One of the most pleasant episodes came by luck a few days after I got back from Chile. Chester Congdon, a leading director in Calumet and Arizona, with his wife and their daughters, Elizabeth and Helen, spent a couple of days at the Greenway house before making an auto- mobile trip across the desert from Tucson to Ajo. At the same time I arranged to examine the small but rich Bush and Baxter copper mine a few miles from Tucson. The principle that conventional schemes for taxing petroleum or mineral resources are "inefficient" is illustrated using simulation calculations tested against an "ideal" system. Inefficiency is defined as the relative success in maximizing expected government revenues from the resources. Most systems fail because: 1) they leave oil in limbo, i.e. unproduced because of excessive fiscal burden; or 2) they unnecessarily increase the variance in the explorationist'c, rate of return by undertaxing large fields and overtaxing smaller but infra-marginal fields. This increases his discount rate and reduces taxable surplus. An "ideal" tax system is specified which maximizes government revenues while minimizing risk to the operator. Two criteria are developed: 1) the tax falls to zero on fields which yield only the minimum necessary rate of return ("marginal" fields); and 2) the after-tax present value of all fields is the same for all fields above a threshhold size. In particular, marginal fields, while contrib- uting little to expected values, do contribute to reducing variance and hence risk praemia by distributing the exploration costs over a higher probability of successful outcomes.

"There are a number of important dates that must be disclosed when a Qualified Person (QP) is preparing a technical report for securities purposes. The dates are discussed in NI43-101 and the Form of the Technical Report, NI43-101F1. •,Effective date of the technical report •,Possible revision date of the report •,Effective date of mineral resources and mineral reserves •,Date of the personal inspection (site visit) •,Signature date of the date report (execution date) •,Date of the certificate of the QP •,Date of the consent of the QP The effective date of the report is basically the cut-off date for the information that is included in the technical report. The effective date should be close to the signature date. If there is too long a period between these dates, the QP runs the risk of new material information becoming available and then the technical report would no longer be current. The effective date is disclosed on the title page of the report and on the signature page. If a technical report needs to be revised to correct problems or disclosure deficiencies identified by the regulators, the QP will normally need to include a revision date on the title page of the report to distinguish the revised version from the original version. In these circumstances, the regulators will request that the original date of the report remain on the title page and the revised date will be below it. When a technical report must be revised, the QP must resign and date the signature page of the report and provide a new certificate and consent."

During the last 20 years, more than 80 km (50 miles) of tunnels have been constructed in the Los Angeles, CA area. Recent projects include The East Central Interceptor Sewer (ECIS), completed in 2004. It spans more than 18 km (11 miles). The Northeast Interceptor Sewer (NEIS), completed in 2005, spans 11 km (7 miles). And the 2-km (1.3-mile) Metropolitan Transportation Authority?s Gold Line Eastside Extension (MCGLEE) was completed in 2006. All of the tunnel routes lay beneath heavily populated urban environments so minimizing ground surface settlement was critical to the success of the projects. Previous tunneling efforts in the Los Angeles area using open shield methods resulted in significant settlement that damaged roads, utilities, buildings and other structures. Earth pressure balance (EPB), or slurry machines, were specified for these projects to reduce subsidence risk. The contractors chose EPB tunnel boring machines (TBM) for the work. The closed and pressured face of the EPB TBM reduces loss of ground at the tunnel face and, when the machines are used in combination with gasketed pre-cast tunnel liners and backfill grout behind the installed segments, losses from over-cut of the excavated surface are also reduced.

Table 1 and figure 1 show the number of fires and fire in¬juries that occurred in underground coal mines by state during 1990-1999. Table 1 also shows by state the risk rates, employ¬ees' working hours, lost workdays, and coal production. Over¬all, 87 fires occurred in 12 states. Twenty-seven of those fires caused 34 injuries (the yearly average was 8.7 fires and 3.4 injuries). One fire and one injury involved a contractor. The underground mine fires required 25 mine rescue team interventions and 30 mine/section evacuations followed by 13 mine/section sealing/flooding/CO2/N2, gas injections. The Ewhr value was 1,003 x 106 hr (In = 0.007), the CP value was 4,008 x 106 st (Frr = 0.022), and the LWD value was 208. Virginia had the most fires (15 fires and 7 injuries). Pennsyl¬vania had the most fire injuries (12 fires and 9 injuries), fol¬lowed by Kentucky (12 fires and 6 injuries), and Alabama (12 fires and 4 injuries). Among these states, Alabama had the highest fire risk rate value (Frr = 0.073), whereas Pennsylvania had the highest injury risk rate value (In = 0.016). Table 2, partly illustrated in figure 2, shows by time period the number of fires, fire injuries, risk rates, employees' working hours, lost workdays, and coal production. The number of fires and fire injuries show a decrease followed by an increase during the five time periods (see table 2 and figure 2). This was ac¬companied by a decline in employees' working hours throughout the periods and an overall small decrease in coal production. The In and Frr values follow patterns similar to those shown by the fire and injury values. By comparison, data from Pomroy and Carigiet [1995] show that during 1978-1992 a total of 11 states were involved in 164 underground coal mine fires (yearly average, 10.8) with 43 injuries (yearly average, 2.9) and 27 fatalities (yearly average, 2; however, the 27 deaths occurred during a single fire caused by an overheated air compressor [MSHA 1984]). The CP value was 5,340 x 106 st (yearly average, 356 x 106 st) (Fn = 0.031). Data on employees' working hours and injury risk rates were not available. Tables 3-8 show the number of fires by ignition source, method of detection and suppression, equipment involved, location, and burning material by time period. Figure 3 shows the major variables during 1990-1999. Table 9 shows the number of fire injuries per number of fires causing injuries and total fires by year, ignition source, equipment involved, and location.

No beneficiamento de itabiritos pobres (%Fe˜44,0) um dos principais desafios para as usinas de tratamento é a produção de concentrado dentro das especificações de qualidade e com menor custo. Nas usinas de beneficiamento a moagem é a operação unitária com o maior custo. Além disso, a moagem secundária é a operação unitária na qual a granulometria do concentrado é adequada às especificações para a etapa de flotação cleaner e para o transporte em mineroduto. Dessa forma, o aumento da eficiência energética no circuito de remoagem permite reduzir os custos e aumentar a eficiência do circuito de flotação cleaner. Amostragens de rotina e testes de bancada realizados com amostras coletadas no concentrador I indicaram oportunidade de aumentar a eficiência energética (kWh/t) da remoagem e reduzir a granulometria na alimentação da flotação. Com esse objetivo, foram realizadas alterações no circuito de remoagem do pré-concentrado da flotação mecânica do concentrador I da Samarco. Essas alterações consistiram em moer todo o pré-concentrado em circuito fechado reverso e não mais em dois estágios, sendo um em circuito aberto e outro em circuito fechado. Essas alterações realizadas no circuito permitiram aumentar a eficiência energética do circuito de remoagem, reduzir o consumo energético em 9,3% e adequar as granulometria e grau de liberação para a etapa subsequente de flotação.

In marginal cases promoters frequently demand financial aid from governments.In the past, the financial assistance has taken the form of gifts, procurement contracts, etc., but aid in such form has been severely criticized. A new formula has been developed to provide a more equitable distribution of the revenues accruing to the government and to private capital.The benefits to these two parties have been evaluated in an hypothetical case and compared in terms of internal rates of return on their investment, their shares of the undiscounted cash flows and their primary profits.The method based on the non-zero sum game theory provides a means for suggesting the lowest feasible annual production and the optimal sum contributed by the government in the form of outright gift, equity capital and convertible bonds. Other financial hypotheses can also be optimized by the computerized analysis."

INTRODUCTION It was not very many years ago that tunneling machine manufacturers spent considerable time trying to convince contractors and mine operators of the advantages of mechanical tunnel boring over conventional drill and blast methods. Today there are few doubters left. There is universal agreement that, not only are tunneling machines here to stay, but the ratio of bored rock tunnels to blasted rock tunnels is increasing at an accelerated pace, and within the next twenty years I predict almost all tunnels will be bored by machine. I believe we are today at a very important mile-post in the development of tunnel boring systems. Felix Gaye stated in his recent article (1) "It is important to disseminate between the efficiency of cutting tools and the overall efficiency of the boring operation". Mechanized tunnel boring in the past placed almost total emphasis on the rock cutting and boring ability of the tunneling machine. With advancements in technology and better solutions to the problems of rock fracture, steering control, and structural design, the emphasis today can be placed on the total-system concept. Tunneling machine design, as one of the key elements in the overall system, presents many problems that are not totally solved today. These design problems are, in the most part, not related with rock fracture, but rather with criteria associated with the over-all operation.

The issues facing graduate training in the mineral processing industry are not too different today from those that prompted the initiation of the Anglo American Platinum Graduate Development Programme (AGDP) in 2002. Graduate metallurgists in South Africa enter the industry from different undergraduate programmes at various tertiary institutions, and so the knowledge and skills of the young graduates varies. Further, the geographical expansion of the industry combined with the downsizing of business units means that there are fewer opportunities for young graduates to be mentored through their first few years on site. Anglo American Platinum chose to address these issues by implementing an intensive, structured graduate training programme for all their new metallurgical graduates, known as the AGDP. The first two years of experience of the AGDP, from the viewpoints of both graduates and lecturers, were presented to the mineral processing community at the IMPC in Turkey in 2006 (Sweet et al, 2006). From the beginning, the programme was structured in a modular fashion to include a basic technical ?toolbox? including statistics, the scientific method and sampling protocols, while the mineral processing content comprised advanced learning in comminution, classification and flotation (later extended to include hydrometallurgy). Technical communication ? both written and verbal ? was included from the start. The programme was focussed very strongly on site work (?learning by doing?), with a major integrated site campaign conducted and analysed by each cohort. In 2012 the AGDP will accept its ninth cohort into the programme. This paper describes how Anglo American Platinum and the University of Cape Town have developed and adapted the programme over the last few years, in response to the challenges of the global recession, skills retention, and the changing operational needs of the company. The programme, which was drawn up to accommodate around 15 concentrator-only graduates, now accommodates 35-40 concentrator, smelter and refinery graduates annually. The programme has also been modified to facilitate new graduates spending most of their first year on the operations. Past failures of coal refuse embankments have resulted in more intensified efforts in inspections of coal refuse sites. Inspections, however, are mainly qualitative and time consuming. In August 1975 CH2M HILL was awarded a contract to identify, develop, and test a rapid system for monitoring coal refuse embankments to aid in inspections. The rapid monitoring system developed uses convergent and vertical photography from conventional fixed-wing aircraft. The system was tested on an active landslide and on two coal refuse facilities using both black and white and color infrared film. Field tests showed the system was capable of accurate measurement while providing qualitative data through photointerpretation. The accuracy of the system allows it to be used to monitor coal refuse embankments, tailings dams, major earth dams, and natural slopes. Bibliographies of literature reviews in the area of past coal refuse embankment failures, monitoring instruments and methods, and photogrammetry are included.

This report gins the results of a study conducted hy the Ilnreau of Mines for the purpose of informing the petroleum industry on the recent progress in the de,·elopment nncl application of the absorption process for recO\·ering gasoline from natural gas. The work has been undertaken entirely with regard to plant practice and for the purpose of describing the features and the operation of units of the plants now in use, the improvements that have been made, and the reasons for any ehanges eontemplated by the engineers in eharge· of the plants studied. Throughout the United States the impro,·ements in the absorption process that are under consideration by engineers not only widen practice so as to include gases at all pressures and percentages of gasoline content, but seem to be dewloping definite standards as to dimensions of towers, l"elocities of flow, saturation of oi~ areas of eooling surfaces, and quantities of menstruum to be circulated. Although perfect practice has by no means been attained, the writer belie,·es thnt a description of the current practice at ,·arious plants, including those ob,'iously more efficient features that each plant hns <le\"eloped and uses at one or another stage of treatment, will intere;; t and possibly help all persons operating or designing absorption plants.

"Sluggish prices for commodities and a glut of oversupply of many commodities did not stop the world’s largest mining equipment makers from showing off their latest and greatest machines and technology starting with the world’s largest equipment trade show, bauma 2016 in Munich, Germany.From April 8-14, an estimated 580,000 visitors from 200 countries visited the show that featured 3,423 exhibitors from 58 countries. While primarily a show for construction equipment, the mining footprint has grown over the years. Among the largest exhibits was that of Liebherr, which brought more than 100 products, had an outdoor exhibition stand, a stand for the components division and a career stand under the motto “Be Part of Something Bigger.” One of the biggest aspects of the exhibit was its mining products where the company staged the first-ever professional table tennis match in the 130 m3 (170 cu yd) dump body of the T 264 mining truck. The top German players Timo Boll and Patrick Franziska with their trainer Jörg Robkopf faced Austria’s singles world champion from 2003, Werner Schlager, and the reigning Team Europe champions Chen Weixing and Stefan Fegerl.“Bauma 2016 was an absolute success for Liebherr. With this year’s appearance we were once again able to show our innovative strength, performance and technological diversity to a very large and international audience from the industry. We conducted interesting discussions with numerous customers and partners from various countries and discussed new projects,” said Stefan Heissler, Member of the board of directors of the Liebherr Group.Likewise, Caterpillar, the world’s largest maker of construction and mining equipment had a large presence at the show with more than 60 products and 12,000 m2 (129,000 sq ft)of exhibit space. Iron and manganese both are important ferrous metals, and they usually need to be extracted separately for better usage. Ferromanganese ore from the Yunnan Province of China was investigated by subjecting it to reduction roasting, leaching, magnetic separation, hydrometallurgical separation process, X-ray diffraction (XRD), electron probe micro-analysis (EPMA) and scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). It is noted that the ferromanganese ore contains valuable components or elements of 21.41 wt%Fe2O3 and 19.88 wt%MnO, which are 14.99% and 15.40% of the total of Fe and Mn, respectively, with a large amount of impurities comprising 33.00 wt% SiO2, 9.81%wt%Al2O3, etc. After roasting, microscopic examination showed the presence of haematite, magnetite, pyrolusite, psilomelane, hollandite, marcasite, pyrite, limonite, braunite and manganite, while XRD analysis showed that the magnetite content increases with the increase in roasting temperature, reflecting the increase in conversion of haematite to magnetite. Based on EPMAand SEM-EDS analysis, it was shown that the haematite and magnetite interface were the main Fe-bearing minerals; however, the dissemination of the two minerals, that is, haematite andmagnetite with the coexistence of Fe- and Mn-bearing minerals, will result in difficulty in effective separation of Fe and Mn. The effective roasting temperature and roasting time were 800 °C and 60 min, respectively, to avoid the formation of a composite oxide of MnxFe3-xO4 beyond 800 °C. The Fe recovery via roasting and magnetic separation only was 66.56%, whereas a combination of magnetic separation which ensued after the leaching process showed a recovery of 80.08% and 59.95% of Fe and Mn, respectively.

Within these jurisdictions, primary attention is given to requirements that must be met in each country for acquisition of rights to permit development of mineral resources. Coverage includes: First, identification of the controlling laws or statutes governing minerals acquisition and reference to the administrative authority; second, analysis of the laws governing mines and quarries and their products; third, analysis of laws applicable to natural gas, petroleum, and related materials; and fourth, mention of laws regulating offshore operations. Where pertinent, sections dealing with historical background or administration have been added. In countries where minerals are subject to control of states or provinces, those areas are considered separately from the central government.

Introduction The Outokumpu copper mine is situated in eastern Finland, 50 kilometers west of the city of Joensuu or 225 kilometers directly north of the city of Viborg (Viipuri), which is situated at the eastern end of the gulf of Finland (Figure 1). The ore-body was discovered in 1910 by Dr. Otto Trüstedt after two years of careful, scientifically-directed, search. During the early period of development of the mine, the ore was treated locally and the copper re-covered by an electrolytic process. Now the ore is concentrated by tables and by flotation. The concentrates are shipped to Germany for refining. In 1929 the mine produced 150,000 tons of ore from which between 20,000 and 25,000 tons of flotation concentrates containing 20 per cent copper were produced. Profits in 1929 were approximately half a million dollars, but the present price of copper will affect very seriously the profits for 1930. The ore reserves are given as between 7 and 8 million tons (1). The grade of ore is stated to be 4 percent to 6 percent copper, with a little zinc.

"A surge bin at Agrium’s Vanscoy potash operations has been plagued with flow, wear, and corrosion issues since being built in 1967. The culprits? The bin’s carbon-steel construction, geometry, and the resultant funnel-flow pattern are the root causes. An investigation and cost analysis indicated that hopper redesign and retrofit would increase production and reduce maintenance and capital costs. The retrofitted bin provides safer, more reliable operation and has a much longer predicted working life. Les responsables ? La construction en acier ordinaire du réservoir, sa géométrie et la structure de débit en résultant au niveau de la carotte en sont les causes fondamentales. (J&J) to provide testing, consulting, and structural engineering services related to proposed modifications to the 270 t special standard product surge bin, which Agrium planned to undertake during a two-week shutdown in August 2013. The bin, which had been plagued with flow, wear, and corrosion issues for its entire working life, was essential for the continuous operation of two of VPO’s compaction plants and for efficient dispatching to loadout. The bin often experienced product hang-ups, clumping on the walls, and plugging at the hopper outlet. Two recent unscheduled mill shutdowns had been partially attributed to flow issues in the bin due to clumping and product plugging up at the screws. These problems increased maintenance costs, limited production capacity, and degraded product quality. Holes and paper-thin sections in the bin walls discovered during a 2013 inspection revealed the potential for major hot material leaks or even structural failure. Either issue would stop plant operations until the bin could be repaired or bypassed. Clearly, the bin cone had reached the end of its life and required replacement."
