"The South African Code for the Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves (the SAMREC Code or the Code) sets out minimum standards, recommendations and guidelines for public reporting of exploration results, mineral resources and mineral reserves in South Africa. The Code is being rewritten and updated, with work on-going since 2013. The revision is being undertaken to ensure the Code remains relevant, incorporates developments within the international mining industry and keeps abreast of technology. Some of the changes and their reasons are discussed. INTRODUCTION The South African Code for the Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves (the SAMREC Code or the Code) sets out minimum standards, recommendations and guidelines for public reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Rreserves in South Africa. The Code is being rewritten and updated, with work on-going since 2013. The proposed 2016 update is not significantly different from previous versions of the Code. The revision is being undertaken to ensure the Code remains relevant, incorporates developments within the international mining industry and keeps abreast of technology. The Code sets out minimum standards, recommendations and guidelines for public reporting. However, reporting may be unclear, ambiguous, selective, obscure, distorted or unintelligible. Part of the purpose of the update is to provide better guidelines to Competent Persons (CPs) to ensure that the material information is being reported and that reporting is transparent in accordance with the guidelines of the Code. The information provided should, as required by the Code, be adequate to inform the “reader/investor or potential investor to make a reasonable and balanced assessment of the significance of the information”. The Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards (CRIRSCO) highlights the importance of the reporting Codes, as provided from a quote from their website (www.crirsco.com): The mining industry is a vital contributor to national and global economies. It is a truly international business that depends on the trust and confidence of investors and other stakeholders for its financial and operational well-being. Unlike many other industries, it is based on depleting mineral assets, the knowledge of which is important prior to the commencement of extraction. It is therefore essential that the industry communicates the risks associated with investment effectively and transparently in order to earn the level of trust necessary to underpin its activities."

A study of the thermodynamic properties of magnesium chloride ammines was carried out with the ultimate objective that the thermal decomposition of the hexammine MgCl2.6NH3 may prove successful on a commercial scale for the manufacture of anhydrous magnesium chloride, which is required for the efficient electrolytic production of magnesium. The experimental data are presented in the form of an equilibrium diagram that aids the understanding of the conditions associated with the thermal decomposition of ammines

Extraction and separation of La, Sm and Dy ions from acidic sulfate-phosphate solutions was investigated using a cation exchange extractant, bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) phosphinic acid, CYANEX 272, in kerosene. The influence of shaking time, equilibrium pH, extractant, sulfate and phosphate ion concentrations, diluent type and temperature was studied. The extraction was found to be pH-dependent, and increasing the phosphate ion concentration inhibited the extraction which was found to be endothermic. The stoichiometry of the extracted metal species was found to be MOH.H2OHSO4H2A.A2. Aliphatic diluents were found to enhance the extraction compared to aromatic diluents. The results showed that there was a separation mode between the metal ions when varying the hydrogen ion and sulfate ion concentrations, under the used experimental conditions. The investigated process was used for the recovery of La, Sm and Dy from the acid solution resulting from the leaching of low-grade monazite.

"Sandfire Resources NL- (‘Sandfire’) DeGrussa definitive feasibility study (DFS) identified geometallurgy as a major factor in achieving optimum plant performance at the DeGrussa mine. A geometallurgical initiative was created to proactively investigate this issue, and a key initial achievement was the 2013 paper by Condon et al (2013) on developing a working geometallurgical model from first principles. Significant advancements in Sandfire’s geometallurgical understanding since that publication now shape how information is presented and communicated.The main geometallurgical parameters so far identified as critical factors affecting plant performance are Cu:S ratio, iron sulfide mineralogy, talc carbonate content and sphalerite content. Apart from specific mill strategies, geometallurgical issues have been managed through communication between departments and strategic run-of-mine (ROM) pad management.This paper uses the current theories of geological evolution of the volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposit at DeGrussa, to discuss the variability between the orebodies C1, DeGrussa (sea floor mounds) and C4, C5 (sub-sea floor replacement) to highlight the different issues each orebody is expected to encounter when processing.A zone of altered low-grade mineralisation surrounds the main orebodies at DeGrussa, referred to as a halo. Talc minerals are often patchy within this halo and often cause significant recovery issues during processing. This halo has been successfully modelled using MgO as a proxy. The ability to model the talc material assists with both identifying potentially problematic zones for processing and geological interpretation of the ore deposits evolution.Early in geometallurgy studies at DeGrussa it became apparent that it would be useful to identify processing performance prior to mining. This necessitated the incorporation of specific sulfide species into the mining block model. These attributes are interpolated from the logged sulfide estimates allowing a clear picture of the abundance of each mineral type within a defined area.In conjunction with the block model a geometallurgical factor (GMF) graph was developed, identifying sulfide mineralogy based upon mineral assays. These two recent additions to the model provide a clear picture of the nature of the ore sources that will be presented to the processing plant.The future of geometallurgy at DeGrussa will see these tools used to aid mine scheduling with a view to further improve processing recoveries.CITATION:Butler, C, Dale, R, Robinson, S and Turner, A, 2016. Occupying a refuge alternative (RA) is an accepted practice in mine fires and explosions when escape is not feasible. MSHA has promulgated a final rule on refuge alternatives that includes a recognition that thermal environment is an important consideration. To this end, an environmental index was specified. The question remains about how to test a refuge shelter to demonstrate that it meets the final rule. The analysis followed five activities: A. Provide an estimate of heat generated by an individual refuge alternative occupant; B. Evaluate the Steadman Apparent Temperature criterion of 95°F; C. Discuss simulations based on body temperature or skin temperature limits; D. Suggest method of simulating human heat generation during refuge occupancy; and E. Suggest alternative methodologies/criteria for evaluating heat and humidity survivability inside a refuge alternative.

The effects of temperature and strain rate on the mechanical behavior of a superelastic NiTi wire were investigated by uniaxial tensile testing. A universal testing machine with an attached heating chamber was used for the tensile tests. Temperature influence was studied through straining of samples until rupture at a fixed strain rate and temperatures of 25, 50, 75, 100, 125, 150, 175 and 200 °C. Strain rate effects were investigated by straining samples until rupture at room temperature and strain rates of 10-2, 5 x10-3 , 10-3, 5 x 10-4 and 10-4 s-1. The effects of temperature and strain rate on NiTi mechanical behavior were discussed in terms of critical stress to induce martensite and austenite yield strength, when applicable; upper plateau stress, transformation plateau length and ultimate plateau stress. It was found that increasing test temperature and strain rate shifted the stress-strain curve upwards, albeit temperature displayed a greater influence. Plateau length increased with temperature, but no significant changes were detected as a result of different strain rates.

The Bureau of Mines developed a process using amines for recovering tungsten as ammonium paratungstate from alkaline leach liquors without producing synthetic scheelite as an intermediate product. Over 90 pct of the tungsten in low-grade scheelite or ferberite concen-trate was recovered as ammonium paratungstate by (l) autoclave leaching the concentrate with Na2CO3, (2) solvent extraction of the acidified leach liquor with kerosine solutions of either a quaternary amine (Aliquat 336) or a primary amine (Primene JM-T), (3) stripping the tungsten values from the quaternary amine with ammoniacal NH4C1 or from the primary amine with NH4OH, and (4) crystallization of ammonium paratungstate from the strip liquor. Reagent consumption in pounds per pound of W03 recovered was, for the quater¬nary amine, 3 Na2CO3, 3.5 H2SO4 , 2.2 NH4Cl, 1 NH3, and 0.4 glacial acetic acid; for the primary amine, it was 3 Na2CO3, 3.5 H2SO4, .06 NH4Cl, and 0.9 NH3. Both reagents extract molybdenum along with tungsten. Silicate and phosphate are partly extracted and contaminate the product; leach liquors containing these impurities require preliminary purification.

"Most driven pile projects have plumbness limits from 0.25 in/ft (21 mm/m) to 0.5 in/ft (42 mm/m) to control bending stresses. For two projects, the project teams performed static load testing to evaluate performance of piles with sweep. One project, located in Grand Forks, North Dakota, used 9.625-inch (244-mm) diameter piles with a wall thickness of 0.395 inch (10 mm) and lengths ranging from about 130 to 160 feet (40 to 49 m). Measured pile sweep (lateral offset distance of the pile toe from the pile top) was between 12 and 17 inches (305 to 432 mm). Static load testing indicated that the piles could support the design load with axial deflection of less than 1 inch (25 mm) but only provided about 80 to 90 percent of the ultimate resistance at axial deflections of about 1.9 to 1.7 inches (49 to 43 mm), respectively. The other project, located in Shakopee, Minnesota, used 9.625-inch (244-mm) diameter pile but with a wall thickness of 0.352 inch (9 mm) and lengths around 50 to 90 feet (15 to 27 m). The measured sweep varied between about 20 and 63 inches (508 and 1,600 mm) for 9 of 214 piles driven at the site. Load testing indicated that these piles could provide the required design resistance with less than 0.3 inch (8 mm) of axial deflection and support the required ultimate resistance with about 0.5 to 0.6 inch (13 to 15 mm) to of axial deflection.INTRODUCTIONAnyone who has observed a significant number of piles has seen that, inevitably, the pile is not perfectly straight after driving. In spite of the best efforts of contractors, there are a whole host of reasons for piles to end up out-of-plumb or to have a curve, sometimes referred to as pile sweep. Most project specifications set limits for plumbness typically between 0.25 in/ft (21mm/m) and 0.5 in/ft (42mm/m) (USACE, 1991; PDCA, 2007; MnDOT, 2016; MoDOT, 2016). Closed-end pipe piles, including monotube or tapertube, are the only pile type that allow actual measurement of the final alignment of the pile.As Nadeem, et al. (2015) note, buckling failure of long, slender piles is the predominant mode of pile failure in soft soils. Pile sweep is just one source of buckling failure in long, slender piles. The nonlinear buckling analysis showed that increasing slenderness ratio and/or increasing degree of curvature decreases the loadcarrying capacity of a driven pile. Nadeem, et al. (2015) considered solid, steel pile with lengths from 24 to 66 feet (7.5 to 20 m), diameters from 9.75 to 26 inches (244 to 660 mm), initial bends from 2 to 6 inches (50 to 150 mm), and half- and quarter-sine shapes."

Specifically, I will discuss what is currently happening with leadership and leadership development in members’ own organizations, what skill sets are important to develop in different hierarchical groups and how comprehensive leadership courses like the leading in Mining course can help improve leadership within individuals and the industry. Leadership development is a process not an event.

Surface soil/spoil Samples (0-10 cm) from experimental test sites in western North Dakota were aseptically collected during August 1975 and each month (May through September) during 1076 and 1977. Selected samples were Cultured in a defined inorganic medium and after six weeks the algae were identified. Chlorophyll u content of the soil/spoil was used as a measure of the algal abundance. Soil physical-chemical properties, species variety and abundance were statistically analyzed. All test sites revealed distinct soil algal communities and demonstrated a successional trend as evidenced by significant increase, in species variety and bionmass over time. Some soil factors, calcium, copper, and phosphorus affected species variety and abundance at more than one situ. Others were important at specific sites; silicon and aluminum at the South Beulah test site; manganese sodium and zinc at the North Beulah test site No. 1 and boron, cadmium and magnesium at the North Beulah test site No. 2. Topsoiled areas had higher species varieties and abundances when compared with control areas, as did plots treated with amendments such as leonardite and fertilizer Generally.

An experimental survey has determined the occurrence of Ti2 Ni-type phases in binary and ternary alloys of Ti, Zr, or Hf with first, second, or third long-period transition metals and also in ternary systems in which 0 is the third component. The existence of eleven previously unreported isomorphs is cited and some approximate phase boundaries are given. Lattice parameters are reported for the new phases. The periodic table relationships involved in the occurrence of the phase are discussed. A previous paper' reported the occurrence of a group of Ti2Ni-type phases (structure-type E93) containing Zr in combination with Rh, Ir, and Pt, and Hf in combination with Rh, Pd, Ir, and Pt, and cited evidence to show that all of the Zr phases and the Hf-Pd phase are not binary phases but occur only when 0 is present. More recently one of the present authors found that in the ternary systems of Ti and 0 with Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni the occurrence of the Ti2Ni-type phase could be correlated qualitatively with valency electron concentration, and that the role of 0 appeared to be that of an electron acceptor.' This paper describes the results of a broader investigation of the occurrence of Ti2Ni-type phases in binary and ternary systems containing Ti, Zr, or Hf. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Alloys were prepared by arc melting. The purity of the metals Zr, Rh, Hf, Ir, Pd, and Pt was given in the previous paper.' The additional materials used for this work were metals with a minimum purity of 99.9 pct and reagent grade ZrO2, TiO2, Cr2O3, and NiO. Chemical analysis of several alloys in each system indicated good agreement between intended compositions and cast-button compositions. For the heat treatment precautions were taken to avoid oxygen contamination. The specimens were wrapped in Mo foil and sealed in fused quartz tubes at a room temperature pressure of 1 x mm of Hg. These capsules were then annealed in a vacuum furnace at an external pressure of 5 X mm of Hg. Since the major constituent in most of the alloys studied was the brittle Ti2Ni-type phase, Debye-Scherrer patterns with sharp lines could be obtained with powder crushed from the annealed solid samples without being reannealed. Metallographic, X-ray diffraction, and density determination techniques previously described1, 2 were used. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Zr-Rh-O, Zr-Ir-Oand Zr-Pt-O Systems-Figs. 1 through 3 show the approximate boundaries of the Ti2Ni-type phase fields at the temperatures indicated in the ternary systems Zr-Rh-O, Zr-Ir-O and Zr-Pt-0. In each isothermal section the Ti2Ni-type phase field is labeled E and the unidentified binary phase found in the previous work' is labeled ?. The dotted lines, which are not phase boundaries, correspond to the composition (Zr2 B)1-xOx. In each system the Ti2Ni-type phase field is displaced to the high-Zr side of this composition line. However, the departures from Zr2B stoichiometry for the metal components are not as high as Zr3B, as was inferred from the previous work. Lattice parameters of the Ti2Ni-type phases in the alloys shown as triangular data points in Figs. 1 through 3 are given in Table IA. The probable compositions of the Ti2Ni-type phases have been estimated from the isothermal sections. "The development of a DC resistivity instrumentation system for data acquisition in extreme topography yielded an unexpected bonus in the quality and information content of the type of raw data gathered. Not only were traditionally too-rough areas being investigated systematically for the first time, the unique high-density, multi-directional raw data were providing the opportunity to greatly expand the range of conductive and resistive signatures that could be accurately recognized. Using a true 3-D inversion algorithm, 3-D earth resistivity imagery began to show distinctive anomaly patterns for hydrothermal mineralization at the seldom-visited resistive end of the spectrum, successfully imaging epithermal gold systems in conditions that had defied conventional ground and airborne geophysics for years.The traditional mode of designing a resistivity survey to test a specific target concept was shown to be an unnecessary limitation on exploration thinking when a single sweep acquisition of dense, multi-directional 3-D raw data could effectively provide the all-targets “shotgun” coverage that would take 10 or 12 conventional surveys to duplicate. Exploration planning has the opportunity to move from single steps of trial and error geophysical testing to a mode of mapping everything at the outset, and then sorting out what might be of exploration interest in the results. Survey parameterization becomes the non-technical process of marking an outline on a map and declaring “survey here.” Operational and interpretational reasons for not testing where the exploration interest lies have all but disappeared. With any-terrain capabilities and unprecedented raw data density and overlap to support interpretation of complex conditions, that outline can be drawn through extreme rough terrain, including lakes, cliffs, industrial facilities, and grounded installations to test for generally unknown sub-surface features of potential interest.As more is learned about the larger-scale signatures of ore settings and the district-scale geo-electric imprint of hydrothermal processes on lithology, it appears that the only thing certain about ore signatures is their uncertainty. This is not bad news. New opportunities abound as the advanced 3-D technology allows a first effective look at the previously unexplorable rough terrain or complicated settings, and a second look at areas where older results may now be known to be non-definitive."

Achieving occupational health and environmental noise objectives is a major consideration in the planning or operational phase of resource development and industrial projects to meet the needs of the workforce and community and comply with legislative requirements. For material handling systems, ventilation plants, mobile equipment, process plants and fixed infrastructure, noise emissions need to be considered at the design phase. The preferred approach is to provide noise emission technical specifications, but in many cases this is not stipulated. An occupational noise requirement, such as ‘not to exceed 85 dBA at 1 m’, is often provided, but this will not achieve the required occupational or environmental noise objectives and may cause overly stringent requirements when they may not be needed. It should be noted that when developing the technical specification, measuring compliance needs to be taken into account as, in some cases, measuring may be very difficult or even not possible.This paper will discuss the requirements for providing an effective noise specification that ensures the environmental and occupational noise objectives are able to be achieved and that, once installed, compliance can be measured. It discusses planning such as when to set the objective, correlating the appropriate objectives for the environmental and occupational noise requirements, allowing for measurement tolerance, providing a suitable criteria and data format for the suppliers to respond to and methodology to measure compliance. Different phases of a project require different approaches to planning for noise management and these will be discussed in the paper. "The stress equilibrium is disturbed in a body of rock by a mine opening and is restored by a redistribution of the stresses around the opening. The pattern of the redistribution of unilateral stress around an opening has been established by mathematical analysis and photoelastic measurements. The pattern for multilateral stress is found by superimposition of unilateral fields. The mathematical analysts do not use the elastic moduli as parameters and they are not significant in photoelastic work. The medium is isotropic. The concept of unilateral stress from vertical loading and the classical pattern of its stress distribution around openings does not explain commonly observed failures around the perimeters of mine openings. They show evidence of compression where tension is postulated.When it is recognized that few minerals and perhaps no rocks are Hooke Solids, most rocks must be St. Venant Solids. The components have varying degrees of elasticity and viscosity. The assembly will be-have elastically to rupture under shock loading, but when loaded short of rupture will adjust viscously to equilibrium. Similarly, the highly elastic components may initiate rupture before equilibrium can be established when stress is instantaneously relieved. Polycrystalline adjustments may produce permanent deformation. The mechanics of consolidation, especially in sedimentary deposits, ac-quire a stress component normal to the direction of compaction which can exceed that of the loading. It is one source of prestress. There are others. The principles of prestress design are based on the normal beam reactions, modified by a built-in compression in the lower chord. When the beam is loaded to design limits, the lower chord retains some compression and the whole beam depth is effective in compression. Some of the . common evidences of failure in compression over a mine opening can be duplicated in a prestressed experimental model.When the triaxial stress pattern is recognized and suitable measuring techniques are devised, mine design can be done on a rational basis."

Within the framework of the adaptation of the South-East European Technicentre (Technicentre Sud-Est Européen TSEE), SNCF Voyageurs appointed Pini with the project management mission (MOE) for the design and construction monitoring of a road tunnel. This investment has a dual function: during the site transformation phase, it facilitates the work logistics (and shorten traffic flows); and in the operating phase, it is intended to ease all movements on the site over the long term. This is a limited-length gallery (50 meters) to be performed in conventional excavation below Poniatowski Avenue (Paris 12e). The excavation, crossing the entire width of the boulevard, constitutes a major challenge, given the very low coverage (less than 5.5 m), and the surrounding main infrastructures. The same project mis- sion includes the design of the tunnel accesses, via reinforced-concrete frame structures. The targeted design questions several aspects of its execution framework, and particularly, continuous operation must be guaranteed to the neighboring networks during the works. The installation of an umbrella- pipe all along the excavation profile, the progression in divided sub-sections, and the implementation of a complex monitoring system are hence key elements for limiting and controlling any deformation. An exhaustive 3D finite element modelling was performed, taking into account the detailed phasing of construction (pre-support, excavation in divided section, preliminary support and definitive lining), to dimen- sion the structures, and, overall, to analyze the impacts on the neighboring structures and facilities. During the execution phase (planned for mid-2024), monitoring activities with back-analyses as close as possible to the works are planned.

Attempts were made in 1908, at the Great Falls Works, to produce ingots direct from the Butte precipitate by smelting the material in a reverberatory refining furnace. The ingots produced in this manner averaged 99.4 per cent. of copper and 0.40 per cent. of arsenic and antimony. The copper content being considered too low, it was decided to cast the copper into anodes and to treat the anodes in the electrolytic plant. No. 1 Furnace, in which the precipitate was treated, was a regular cathode refining furnace previously employed in making wire bar, cake, and ingot from electrolytic cathodes. The hearth of the furnace was 24 by 12 ft., having a capacity of 100,000 lb. of cathodes. The furnace was coal fired, and the copper was dipped by means of trolley ladles. Cardox blasting is used widely in coal mines in the United States . A model of a Cardox blasting device was approved by the Bureau of Mines subject to certain conditions and limitations , and the approval was extended to other models from time to time . Certain special hazards are entailed in the use of Cardox as with explosives . One of these is flying shells . In some blasts , the Cardox shell is violently ejected from the borehole and flies like a projectile , frequently ricocheting off solid objects and striking points considerably off the line of its initial flight . Flying shells have been known to pierce the webs of structural - steel beams , to pass through both sides of allsteel mine cars , to be driven through stout hardwood timbers , to knock out timber sets , to damage loading equipment , and to break or short - circuit power lines . A considerable number of shot - firers and other workers have been struck by flying shells and killed or injured . Accidents from this cause , although not as frequent as other types of mine accidents , are usually serious , closely approximating accidents caused by blasting with ordinary explosives . The increasing number of such accidents prompted a Bureau of Mines field investigation of possible methods of preventing dangerously violent ejections of Cardox devices . This report contains pertinent data collected during the investigation and describes methods tested and discarded as well as the development and proof of an apparently satisfactory method .

Guidelines for publication of information defining the amount and grade of resource material available in a deposit are well established in Australasia?s JORC Guidelines, Canada?s National Instrument 43-101 and similar documents in South Africa, Peru, Chile and elsewhere (Table 1). These guidelines provide standards to apply regarding the geologic and geostatistical basis for describing the level of confidence to be assumed for an estimate of the amount and grade of material. All of them provide for a strict distinction between material that has been demonstrated to be economically mineable and that which has not, and all of them provide terms such as ?resource? or ?exploration information? to be applied to data regarding material that has not been demonstrated to be economically mineable. It is not until an economic study has been completed that we are allowed to apply the powerful terms ?reserves? and ?ore? to our deposit material. Indeed, the application of these eye-catching labels immediately tells the reader that an economic study has been completed by a qualified person, and that the results of the study were positive. While extensive guidelines are established for describing the level of confidence in published geologic data, and the nature of the economic study that should be accomplished before using the terms ?reserves? or ?ore?, surprisingly little guidance is provided regarding the process to use, and the level of detail to attain, for estimating capital and operating costs for the study. The intent of this paper is to lay the groundwork for development of suitable guidelines for the cost estimating process. While the codes do not provide specific instructions for the cost estimate, they do provide numerous hints and clues to help determine the level of detail expected and the type of procedure to apply in preparing the estimate. This paper will first review the various codes to gain an insight into the thinking of the drafters of the codes regarding their unstated expectations for the cost estimating process. Based on this review, a series of guidelines are proposed for this purpose.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has developed a computerized commodity flow model for strategic and critical materials This flow model is generic and applicable to most commodities and amenable to updating supply, demand, and/or production data change. The original model, with slight modifications, was used to track the flow of chromium. This report follows the flow of chromium through its metallurgical, chemical, and refractory applications, and highlights areas where significant losses occur because of downgrading, export, or disposal. The study indicates that materials containing 451,769 mt of chromium were consumed, including 99,221 mt of chromium from recycling, Chromium losses from all causes in 1989 were estimated to be 345,347 mt from a variety of areas. These areas and their chromium losses are as follows: processing losses, 38,825 mt; processing-downgraded scrap, 18,227 mt; manufacturing losses, 18,128 mt; manufacturing-downgraded scrap, 56,595 mt; prompt scrap exported, 1,531 mt; obsolete scrap exported, 43,443 mt; recovery losses, 155,529 mt; and recycling losses, 13,069 mt. Recycled chromium-containing material accounted for 22 pct of the apparent consumption of chromium in 1989.
