"INTRODUCTION This report is one of a series. 4. 5. 6/ concerned with presenting historical development, and operating data on secondary-recovery projects in various States to stimulate interest in sound secondary-recovery programs. Preceding reports in this series have dealt exclusively with descriptions of and results obtained by water flooding in three states, but no recent publication of comparable purpose describes gas-injection 7/ practices. The authors intend to present material relevant to the development and operation of gas-injection projects in Illinois, with particular emphasis on those producing from oil-bearing horizons that had been depleted to a point near the economic limit of operation by past oil-recovery methods.Most operators realize that the energy expended on the movement of fluids through gas-expansion- or gas-cap-type oil reservoirs to producing wells must be supplemented to attain maximum recovery of the oil present. Under favorable conditions, many operators choose to maintain oil-propulsive forces at or near their original magnitude by injecting extraneous fluids into a reservoir or recycling produced fluids early in the life of a field. More common, and less desirable, is the practice of replenishing these forces after primary producing methods become unprofitable. The lattes practice has been adopted in many stripper fields in Illinois and most of the oil-producing States during the last 40 years, but other old oil fields, and oil properties within those fields which were partly exploited by secondary--recovery methods, also may offer favorable opportunity for further development. To encourage and, aid operators in the development of gas-injection projects in the old oil fields of the United States, four projects have been described in detail in this report."

O presente projeto teve como objetivo a síntese com alta homogeneidade química, utilizando a reações no estado sólido através de moagem úmida, envolvendo alumina em sua fase mais estável (corundum) dopada com íons de estrôncio. Foram utilizados como fonte de Sr2+ tanto óxidos quanto nitratos e carbonatos e variou-se também o meio de moagem (aquoso e alcoólico), a temperatura de calcinação e a concentração de dopante. Para a caracterização do material foram realizadas difrações de raios-x e espectrometria por fluorescência. O potencial catalítico da alumina dopada com Sr2+ é conhecido para reações de transesterificação, e os estudos deste sistema que são encontrados na literatura apontam para a formação de compostos intermediários, porém utilizando diferentes rotas de síntese. Os resultados preliminares indicam que por moagem úmida não há a formação de compostos intermediários.

Laboratory studies suggest that improvements of coke strength brought about by pre-heating caking coals before carbonization accrue from inadvertent oxidation rather than from other low-temperature changes in the coal mass. Controlled oxidation of highly caking coal, followed by laboratory carbonization, produces cokes which, in terms of a laboratory scale tumble test index, are equivalent to those obtained from prime metallurgical blends. Appropriately formulated blends of exhaustively oxidized and fresh caking coal similarly yield cokes with strength indices comparable to those of cokes made from the same coal after oxidation under optimum conditions.

The Mini-Disc TM cutter drill bit is a radical design departure from the traditional tri-cone rock drill bit. Miniature disc type cutting tools as small as 3.25 inches (82.5 mm) diameter are fitted to a bit body to cut individual concentric kerfs. The action is the same as that commonly used on large tunnel boring machines but miniaturized. The high performance rate and efficiency of a disc cutter are the result of producing a large proportion rock chips rather than sand or powder. The Mini-Disc TM drill bit, referred to as the "Disc Bit" has other unique features as well. It can be re-greased between runs. It can be rebuilt in the field in about 15 minutes, cutters can be replaced and the Disc-Bit appears to require less down hole hydraulic power than conventional bits. Thoroughly tested in the laboratory, the bit has recently been undergoing field trials in well drilling, blast hole drilling and shaft drilling. As any engineer knows, the laboratory cannot shake out all the problems but it eliminates the more glaring weaknesses. Performance results have been exhilarating, and a few mechanical problems were discovered and largely overcome. This paper is a progress report.

A presente proposta tem por objetivo desenvolver uma análise experimental da liga hipereutética Sn-0,5%Ni solidificada unidirecionalmente em regime transitório de fluxo de calor contra chapa molde de cobre. A liga foi avaliada quanto a sua microestrutura bruta de fusão e suas respectivas correlações com os parâmetros térmicos (velocidade da frente eutética -VE e taxa de resfriamento eutética -?E) e propriedades mecânicas. Os resultados mostram que a morfologia microestrutural predominante é composta por células ricas em estanho (β-Sn) circundadas por mistura eutética Sn+intermetálico tipo NiSn. Uma transição microestrutural foi observada entre as posições 15mm (?E=1,7°C/s) e 30mm (?E=1,1°C/s), de célula regular (CR)?célula tipo placa (CTP). Notou-se ainda a presença de intermetálicos primários NiSn distribuídos ao longo da matriz nas posições iniciais do lingote. Valores superiores de limite de resistência à tração (σu=26 MPa) e limite de escoamento (σy=21 MPa) foram encontrados para a posição 6mm a partir da base refrigerada do lingote, podendo estar relacionados com a estrutura celular mais refinada e também com a presença dos intermetálicos primários NiSn. O alongamento específico (?) comportou-se de maneira inversa, visto que as estruturas mais grosseiras (CTP) e a ausência de intermetálicos primários são responsáveis por facilitar a deformação plástica na estrutura da liga Sn-0,5%Ni, aumentando seu nível de ductilidade.

The United States was the world’s largest producer and consumer of boron compounds during 1995. According to estimates from the US Geological Survey(USGS), boron mineral concentrate and chemical production in the United States totaled an estimated 1.1 Mt(1.2 million st) yielding 602 kt (663,000 st) of B2O3 for an estimated value of $462 million. This level of production exceeded 1994 revised production figures by about 9%. The United States continued to provide nearly all its own boron supply while maintaining a strong position as a source of sodium borate products and boric acid to foreign markets. During 1995, about 900 people worked in domestic boron mines and plants, about the same as in1994. USGS estimated total world production of boron during 1995 to be about 3 Mt (3.3 million st), yielding about 1.6 Mt (1.8 million st) of B2O3. World production in 1995 was about equal to revised 1994 levels.

"IntroductionMUCH PROSPECTING, exploration, and development work was done for uranium in Canada in 1952, chiefly in northern Saskatchewan and in the Great Bear Lake region of the northwest Territories. The outstanding feature of the year was the great amount of work done in preparing for production at the Ace mine of Eldorado Mining and Refining, Limited, in the Goldfields region . of Saskatchewan. Many private companies and prospectors were also active in this region. Most of the other parts of Canada where uranium has been found received less attention than during the last few years, partly because so much interest was taken in the Goldfields region.In presenting this short summary of the year's activities now, the writer is handicapped because the season is not yet over; some discoveries have probably not yet been announced, and there has not yet been time to digest the numerous reports that have been sent in by companies and prospectors. In any case it would be impossible to give details for most of the discoveries and properties, because that would require a long report, and because that information is classed as confidential until released by the discoverers and companies concerned. It is only possible, therefore, to give a few generalizations, a brief out-line of the activities in northern Saskatchewan, even briefer ,accounts of the work in other parts of the country, and a few details that property owners have informed the writer he may publish or that have already been published by the owners."

Underground or In-situ Coal Gasification (UCG or UICG), though not a new concept, is now attracting considerable global attention as a viable process to provide a "clean" and economic fuel from coal. Applying improved UICG technology to gasify deep, thin, and low-grade coal seams could vastly increase the amount of exploitable reserves. However, it is imperative that further development of this technology is based on integrating UCG practices and potential environmental impacts with accepted sustainability frameworks and processes. This paper evaluates the potential of UCG to conform to frameworks such as MMSD (Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Development), Natural Step and Green Engineering, in order to define its "sustainable" potential. The paper also discusses the potential contributions of UCG to sustainability during its design, operation, closure, and post-closure phases.

Staying competitive in the highly aggressive Powder River Basin is a challenge facing all operators. Any advantage that a mine utilizes to improve productivity and reduce costs could mean the difference in the tight spot coal market. Technological advances in mining equipment and data acquisition at the Eagle Butte Mine in Gillette, Wyoming result in productivity gains and increased maintenance awareness. A new overburden haulage truck fleet with an onboard payload and fault monitoring system interacts via telemetry with the loading shovel and PC's located in production and maintenance offices, enabling staff to monitor production and maintenance on a real-time basis. This paper will describe the system and highlight the benefits realized as a result of its implementation.

Isothermally formed plates of proeutectoid a, lengthen at approximately the rates predicted by the Zener-Hillert equation, indicating that their lengthening kinetics are controlled by the volume diffusion of chromium in the ß matrix. Solution annealing treatments in the vicinity of the transus introduce a second mode of transformation, in which the lengthening rate is at least 1.8 x 104 faster than predicted by this equation. Little or no volume diffusion appears to accompany the latter transformation. The Presence of oxygen is evidently a Prerequisite for the occurrence of this reaction. X HE effects of thermal history prior to the initiation of transformations which proceed by nucleation and diffusional growth are currently evoking considerable interest. The rate of nucleation (but not the rates of growth) of pearlitel and of bainite,2 and the over-all rates of aging reactions in Al-cu3 and Al-si4 alloys have been shown to be appreciably dependent upon thermal history in the solid-solution region"' or in the two-phase region prior to the onset of pre~ipitation.3,4 In none of these reactions, however, was the transformation mechanism changed by variations in the temperature-time path used to reach the reaction temperature. Preliminary experiments reported by M. K. McQuillan5,8 and a systematic investigation by Farrar and Margolin7 have disclosed that the transformation behavior of hypoeutectoid Ti-Cr alloys is considerably more sensitive to thermal history. Qualitative evidence strongly suggests that not only the rate of nucleation but also the rate of growth and even the mechanism of the ß — a reaction can undergo remarkable changes when a solution annealing treatment in the vicinity of the ß/a +ß, or transus temperature, is interposed between a high-temperature solution anneal (conventionallq at 1000°C) and the isothermal reaction treatment. The present investigation was undertaken in an attempt to ascertain the nature and origin of these effects. Study of the changes in the kinetics and morphology of the ß - a, reaction produced by varialtions in thermal history was the primary means employed for this purpose. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The compositions of the alloys used in this in~esti~ation are given in Table I. These alloys were homogenized for 5 days at 1050° C in evacuated (2 x 10 -5 mm of Hg), zirconium-gettered fused quartz capsules. The capsules themselves were enclosed in a porcelain chamber evacuated with a mechanical pump during the homogenization anneals. Upon completion of homogenization, the alloys were cooled to room temperature and then reheated to 550°C for 3 1/2 days in order to transform the alloys to a finely divided mixture of a and TiCr2, and thus provide an approximately constant initial mi-crostructure. Individual specimens were sealed in evacuated and internally gettered Vycor capsules and heat treated as previously described.8,9 EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Ti-10.64 Pet Cr. Each year, hundreds of mine workers are involved in machinery-related accidents. Many of these accidents involve inadequate or improper use of lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures. To mitigate the occurrence of these accidents, new safety methods are needed to monitor access to hazardous areas around operating machinery, improve documentation/monitoring of maintenance that requires shutdown of the machinery, and prevent unexpected startup or movement during machine maintenance activities. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is currently researching the application of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to provide intelligent machine monitoring as part of a comprehensive LOTO program. This paper introduces NIOSH’s two phase implementation of an IoT-based intelligent machine monitoring system. Phase one is the installation of a proof-of-concept system at a concrete batch plant, while phase two involves scaling up the system to include additional sensors, more detailed safety/performance metrics, proximity detection, and predictive failure analysis.

In spite of the fact that mining has been more or less active in the northern part of Vancouver island since the late 'nineties', there seems to be a remarkable lack of information regarding the nature and development of the region. Recently the operations at the Old Sport mine of the Coast Copper Company, Limited, and spectacular copper discoveries in the vicinity of Nimpkish lake, have directed the attention of the mining fraternity to the district. The writer spent the summer of 1929 making a reconnaissance examination of the general geology and mining properties of the area between Quatsino sound and Nimpkish lake, and he feels that a short paper describing the nature and mining possibilities of the region should be of interest at this time. A more detailed account of the ?geology and of the mining properties will be published in the forth- coming Summary Report of the Geological Survey. A short paper dealing with the Nimpkish Lake district was presented at the Annual Meeting of the British Columbia Division, held recently in Vancouver.

The development of a resource project inevitably requires the investigation of a vast range of issues across most engineering disciplines û mining, metallurgical, chemical, civil, electrical, mechanical and environmental û as well as the geosciences. It is also a characteristic feature of the resource industry that no two orebodies û and hence no two development projects û are the same. So these technical issues have to be addressed to a greater or lesser extent in evaluating any resource projectÆs development potential. Not surprisingly then, technical issues tend to predominate when assessing the development potential of a project in the process typically referred to as ædoing a feasibility studyÆ. But the principal purpose of a æfeasibility studyÆ is to determine whether a development opportunity makes good business sense, not just whether it is technically possible. Resolution of technical issues is often seen as the primary focus of a feasibility study, whereas in reality, these technical issues are the basis upon which an asset delivery and business plan is built. This is not to say that technical issues are unimportant û they are a prerequisite to the demonstration of a projectÆs viability. The feasibility study process must therefore demonstrate that not only have the technical issues been satisfactorily addressed, but also that the broader commercial, economic and social issues have been considered in the development of a comprehensive business plan, which includes an assessment of the risk-reward profile of the proposed development. This paper will present a framework for the conduct of æfeasibility studiesÆ and provide guidance to minimum standards and best practice.

"Three major challenges for the mining industry are the minimization of energy use, water consumption and environmental impact. Therefore, any technique that reduces milling waste, decreases water usage and shrinks impact during mine life must be considered a major innovation in mining.To these ends, one of the most impactful developments in mining within the last 10 years has been the expanded use of high technology sensors to create preconcentrations of mine ore (Jönsson, 2014). The most common sensors used are charge-coupled device (CCD) cameras, that allow through a red, green and blue (RGB) coloring system, the separation of minerals with different colors, tones and, in many cases, with differences in brightness.More recently, the development and use of dual energy X-ray transmission (DE-XRT) to enable the separation by atomic density of the constituent minerals within a given rock has become a reality. Within this work, a rapid bibliographical review of the CCD and DE-XRT methods and examples of their usage within mining and the industrial minerals sector are presented.Sensor-based sorting in miningAutomation within mining is one of the industry’s current goals. Sensors of various kinds have been used as steps toward automation in recent years, from improving the safety and productivity of haul trucks through the use of cameras and global positioning satellites (GPS), to the divination of slope failures. Just as with other mining areas, sorting has improved dramatically and made great steps toward automation in recent years (Wotruba et al., 2014).Sensor-based sorting (SBS) uses spectromatic sensors to identify intrinsic characteristics of particles and separates them by either mechanical or pneumatic means into different product streams (Wotruba et al., 2014). SBS can be used with great effectiveness to improve gravimetric beneficiation through the selective separation or preconcentration of run of mine ores (ROM)."

When Ralph Banks called and asked if I would agree to present a paper on environmental health in the coal industry, I was reluctant because I have not been actively involved in coal mine dust control on a day-to-day basis for a number of years. Ralph reminded me that I am one of the few industry people with an industrial health background who remembers the pre-1969 Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety era. This marks the second time within the past year that I have had a similar request based on the same basic reasons. While I was pleased to have been remembered, I'm beginning to feel like the football player who has played one too many games. In responding to Ralph's request to present an overview of the past, present and future of environmental health in the coal industry, I have attempted to take the broad approach of someone who, having been intimately involved in an area of endeavor for a number of years and then leaves, has an opportunity to revisit that area at a later date to see what has changed and what remains the same, what have been the successes and the failures. Since none of us can foresee the future, trying to project too far ahead is fraught with frivolity, except that unless one is foolish enough to accept a future invitation to review those predictions compared to actual events, no one will recall how accurate or inaccurate those projections might have been. I can assure you that I will not ask to accept that challenge, so you can rest comfortably that five years from today you will not be asked to sit through a similar presentation by me - and that's a promise.

THIS is the story of the recent operations of the Standard Cyaniding Co., which owns the Standard mine, a low-grade gold property in sight of Highway 40 about thirty miles from Lovelock toward Winnemucca, Nev. The ore is mined by power shovel and cyanided after grinding to only 3/S in. A total direct cost of $1.24 was attained in 1941 on 600 tons a day. Mining operations ceased, under Government edict, in 1942, and only in recent months have been resumed. The operating difficulties of today are: (1) the high cost of supplies; (2) labor problems; and (3) Federal laws as interpreted and enforced by executive bureaus of the Government. Of these, the increased cost of supplies is the least important.

"One of the most common emissions from detonating explosives are nitrogen oxides (NOx), which are potentially deadly if inhaled. Lab studies estimate emission quantities, though great variation is shown based on site-specific conditions, and lab tests may not fully represent field results. Field VALUES (have not been measured due to the vast area affected. OSMRE recently promised to release a ruling regarding surface mine NOx production. Once the ruling is implemented, it may eventually be necessary to monitor site-specific NOx production from blasting. A small unmanned aerial vehicle system (sUAS) is able to carry a NOx gas monitor, rapidly travel to the blast location, and to follow resulting clouds of dust and emission gasses. This project will perform laboratory tests to expand on current estimations, determine an optimal method for collecting data, and evaluate the ability for this unique application of sUAS to assist in health risk assessment for mine employees and nearby communities. Additionally, large initial NOx concentrations do not necessarily correlate to unsafe conditions, and this project will be ground breaking in observance of surface blasting emission dispersion. The project is still in early phases at the time of submission for this paper (Nov 1, 2017). Therefore, this paper focuses primarily on summarizing background research related to the project and a description of the project plan. INTRODUCTION Nitrogen oxide gases (NOx) are common emission by products of surface mine blasting. These gases can potentially cause risk to human health and safety, both for mine workers and communities near the blast site. However, these emission quantities are largely unmeasured and no attempts have been made to relate these VALUES (to human health risk. The primary objectives of this project are to determine actual quantities of emission gases produced during surface blasting, to evaluate immediate and long-term risks to nearby people, communities, and ecosystems, to develop a system for mine employees to easily monitor emission and risk levels, and then provide guidelines for mitigating health risks based on a location’s emission results. BACKGROUND Current research regarding health risk produced by surface mine blasting NOx emissions is extremely lacking. Estimations have been made based on laboratory research, though these same test results show wide ranges of possible gas quantities produced based on site-specific conditions. Even if these estimations are accurate, no method has been created to relate gas quantity produced to human exposure concentrations. To further understand this field, background research was studied pertaining to blasting emission gas formation, laboratory and field measurements, harmful effects of blasting emission gases, and relevant government regulations. Com o aumento da eficiência dos processos produtivos, faz-se cada vez mais necessária à utilização de técnicas e ferramentas que proporcionem a otimização de processos a fim de se extrair deles a máxima capacidade produtiva, com o mínimo de custo e variação. Neste contexto, observa-se que ações automatizadas, tomadas por sistemas que possuam inteligência pré programadas, são capazes de realizar este feito, inferindo nos processos por meio de ações otimizadas, na medida e hora certa, utilizando regras e ferramentas matemáticas adequadas. A eficácia destas técnicas já são comprovadas na Samarco. Este artigo está voltado para otimização da dosagem de aglomerante na planta 3 de pelotização da Samarco em Ubu com objetivo de reduzir a variabilidade, reduzir o retorno de pelotas cruas, aumentar a quantidade de pelotas na faixa entre 8 a 16mm e, consequente, aumento da produtividade.

A review of the practices of analyzing for precious metals at the Reno Research Center, U.S. Bureau of mines, is presented. A general description of fire assaying, the physical layout of a fire assay laboratory, and the use of fire assaying in combination with atomic absorption, induction coupled plasma, and emission spectroscopy is reviewed. The combination of techniques significantly decreases the detection limits for precious metal analyses and simplifies the analysis of the platinum-group metals. Methods of protecting personnel from ingestion of lead are also discussed.
