This report presents a complete qualitative picture of knowledge of the composition of petroleum as of April 1965. The material is presented in detail on two imaginative maps--one, the Hydrocarbon Hemisphere, depicts the hydrocarbons that have been identified in petroleum; the other, the Heterogeneous Hemisphere, shows the sulfur, nitrogen, and oxygen compounds that have been found. All compounds are placed on the maps according to boiling point. The accompanying text illustrates by structural formulas the several types of hydrocarbon and nonhydrocarbon compounds identified, presents some quantitative data, and points out the possible geochemical significance of a number of the compounds. The possibilities of the Petroleum World of the future are discussed as a function of needed research,

"As mine size and tonnage continues to increase, material handling/processing equipment has also increased in size with 400 MT haul trucks, 2000 KW crushers, 12 M SAG/AG mills, 8.5 M ball mills, 3000 M3 flotation cells and 12.5 MW HPGR’s all with planned designs to increase in size further. Related equipment including vibrating screens have also increased in size with screens seeing feed rates of 3000 MTPH. Open circuit SAG Pre-Crush and closed circuit HPGR flowsheets are becoming more common with large screening requirements. Large multi-slope (banana) or horizontal screens are commonly used for these applications, however as the size of these screens has increased, the number and size of the brute force/overhead exciters has increased but with limitations. An example is a SAG discharge screen that will see surges of material from the SAG mill which overload the screen, reducing the screen stroke or throw causing a large reduction in screen efficiency with excessive fines & moisture in the screen oversize feed to the pebble crushing circuit. This paper will present some actual examples of the use of Two-Mass screens as a solution to these overloading problems and the advantages of Two-Mass screens in other high tonnage applications.Brute Force Drive Compared to Two Mass Drive Vibrating ScreensThe standard single mass screen as depicted by figure 1 is generally recognized in the mining industry. It is characterized by the screen body – labeled as the single mass (Mt) that is supported by isolation springs (Kiso). IN the summer of 1934, gold was discovered on Lodge bay, on the north shore of lake Athabaska in northern Saskatchewan, about fifty miles east of the Alberta boundary line. The first claims were taken up by the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited, and there was a 'rush' to locate similar showings. Staking continued through the summer and succeeding winter, and in the spring of 1935 the provincial government established a recording office at a convenient point which is central to the more important holdings and where 'planes can land in any weather. During the past summer, the name of this townsite was changed from Beaverlodge to Goldfields, and a post office was established here. The season was one of great activity; a great deal of assessment and development work was carried out and a large amount of further prospecting done. In addition to the work by private companies, geological investigation was carried out in the region by a Federal Geological Survey party under the charge of the writer and a reconnaissance examination was made of an area of some 7,000 square miles surrounding the region of particular interest. Though this was the first discovery of gold in the region it was not the first occasion that prospecting had been carried out along the north side of lake Athabaska. Over twenty years ago, a number of prospectors were at work in the area and a large number of claims were staked, many of which were never recorded. One man by the name of Piché, in the years 1910, 1912, and 1913, took up a considerable number of claims north of Pine Channel narrows, east of Fond du Lac. His discoveries, which consisted of small showings of sulphides in sedimentary gneiss, proved to be of no economic importance. In 1915, a sudden widespread interest was aroused by the report that a sample of ore collected near Fond du Lac had yielded a very high assay in silver. In March and April of that year, prospectors began to rush into the field by dog teams to take up claims, and, as soon as the Athabaska river was free of ice, others started by boat from Athabaska Landing. Some hundreds of claims were staked and recorded in the Dominion Land Office at Edmonton or at Fort Smith. By July, most of the prospectors had? left the region, having failed to find any silver ore. In 1921, considerable prominence was given to the area a few miles east of Goldfields by reports that very large masses of iron ore were available there. Claims were taken up, but the material is much too low grade to be considered commercial ore.

"INTRODUCTION The continuous mining machines which were introduced in the 1950's now account for more than half the production of coal from underground mines. Unfortunately, these continuous miners which were designed for increased productivity have also increased the concentration of respirable dust in mines. Inhalation of this respirable dust by miners causes the Coal Worker's Pneumoconiosis (CWP). Concern for CWP increased in the United States following a 1963-65 survey that showed definite x-ray evidence of CWP in 9.8 percent of working miners and in 18.2 percent of nonworking miners in the Appalachian bituminous coal region (Breslin and Niewiadomski, 1982).One of the major objectives of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 was the prevention of CUP. This law initially limited the daily average exposure of coal miners to 3 mg/m3 of respirable dust. However, following the results of a probabilistic model developed by Jacobsen, et. al. in 1971, the limit was reduced to a mass concentration of 2 mg/m3 unless quartz content exceeds 5 percent, a rare occurrence in mines. Based on x-ray categorization prior to death it is believed that the mass concentration in the respirable fraction is a parameter of primary interest for hygenic evaluation of dust exposure. Morgan, Burgess and Jacobson (1973) suggested that the quantity of inhaled dust, although influential is not the only aspect of exposure which is significant in producing CWP. Miners working in higher rank coal (anthracite) mines are more susceptible to CWP (Morgan, Burgess and Jacobson, 1973). This also confirms the findings of the British (Bennett, Dick and Kaplan, 1979 and Hurley, et. al., 1979) and Germany (Reisner and Rubock, 1977). Based on the cytotoxicological evidence Reisner and Rubock (1979) suggested that when coal properties are similar, increasing quartz and mineral content increases toxicity. David, Ottery and Le Roux (1975) examined that as the severity of the CWP increased the retention of the coal dust content in the pulmonary region remained the same, while that of quartz content increased significantly. Leiteritz, Baur and Bruckman (1971) studied the various components of coal dust and showed that coal particles comprised a smaller fraction of the mass of fine dust than did particles of quartz and minerals. It is ironic that quartz and mineral matter both comprise smaller fractions of the higher rank coal dust (Dodgson, et. al., 1971 and Dwiggins, 1981). Results of a recent research revealed that quartz or any other mineral examined had no strong or consistent effect on the incidence or progress of CWP (Attfield, 1984) while Dodgson, et. al., (1971) concluded that high exposures to minerals such as illite, kaolinite and mica will retard the progress of CWP. Size and shape characteristics are believed to be important in the relationship between mineral particles and health effects (Shedd, Virta and Wylie, 1982)."

Banded Iron Formations (BIF) are sedimentary rock formations ranging in age from 0.8 to 3.8 billion years and consist of alternating layers of silica and iron. The thickness of the alternating layers varies between and within deposits, with this lithology forming approximately two-thirds of South Africa’s future low-grade hematite resources. The production costs for South African iron ore producers are approximately double that of the largest iron ore producers, namely, Brazil and Australia. This in conjunction with volatile commodity prices, necessitated a cost-sensitive beneficiation strategy for low-grade hematite to sustain the industry and extend life of mine. A BIF sample grading at 44% Fe and comprising predominantly of hematite and quartz with minor amounts of magnetite and goethite was subjected to three fines gravity processing routes to establish the amenability of this sample to beneficiation. To provide flexibility for iron ore producers who still have high-grade resources available, two product grades were considered, namely a 60% Fe product for further blending or a 63% Fe product for direct sales.

The average global recovery rates for processing scheelite ores by physical methods are normally in the range 50 to 70%, and it is problematic to attain a minimum grade of 60% WO3 in the concentrates without penalizing further this yield. Direct hydrometallurgical processing of low-grade concentrates or medium- to high-grade ores may become an interesting global economic alternative as it allows increasing the recovery rate, avoiding major penalizations due to the grade of the concentrate and increasing the added value of the final product. Leaching of scheelite by sodium carbonate presents several advantages such as its selectivity regarding the dissolution of troubling metals like iron and aluminium, allowing for a simple and flexible process diagram. However, it has the disadvantage that it is performed at high temperature and pressure with a high consumption of reagents. The feasibility of leaching is appraised by the extraction yield and selectivity, but also by the operating cost. Considering these aspects, a relevant objective of the research was to transform alkaline pressure leaching into a feasible processing alternative directly applicable to both medium- and high-grade ores and simultaneously to low- and high-grade concentrates produced by physical methods. The research used ore samples and low-grade concentrates from a typical skarn orebody as well as high-grade concentrates from a chalcopyrite-scheelite orebody. Different operating conditions were tested. Temperature, pressure and reagent concentration showed to be fundamental, but not exclusive, in determining the leaching behaviour. The operating conditions are milder than the ones generally proposed in the literature or currently in use in industry, but with higher carbonate consumptions. The research was oriented towards potential industrial implementation allowing for the application of optimization methods and straight scale-up to pilot-plan design and project.

Autogenous grinding, broadly defined as the self-comminution of ore in a cylindrical tumbling mill without using auxiliary grinding media, was first applied in the early 1930s in the so-called Hadsel mills (Hardinge, 1955) as seen in [Fig. 1], mainly used in gold mines on the US West Coast. A number of these mills were built in sizes of 6.1 to 7.3 m (20 to 24 ft) in diameter and 1.5 to 1.8 m (5 to 6 ft) in length but were later abandoned because of operating and maintenance problems. Further development of autogenous grinding led to the Hardinge wet grinding mill, the Aerofall dry grinding mill, and others. A tabulation of all known autogenous and semiautogenous installations around the world was sent recently to the authors by G. J. Kushner of Koppers Metal Processing Division. In the size range of 7.3 to 9.8 m (24 to 32 ft) in diameter, it lists a total of thirty mills used in the processing of copper ores. An additional 120 units are listed in the same size range for the processing of iron ores and other minerals. The largest mills in existence are 11.1-m-diam X 4.6-m-long (36-ft-diam X 15-ft-long) mills in Minnesota, powered by 8950 kW (12,000 hp) motors and used in taconite beneficiation. It is indicative of the phenomenal growth of this technology that none of the above 150 mills was in operation prior to 1964. Grinding rates in autogenous mills are very sensitive to variations in ore breakage characteristics and even with fairly constant ore type can exhibit large fluctuations in throughput. Autogenous grinding also depends on availability of a fraction of the ore to be ground in the form of "competent" rock which can withstand to a certain degree the tumbling and impact action within the mill. If the ore is uniformly "soft", it will soon be crushed into small size particles and further grinding, which depends on the existence of large size rocks in the mill, becomes impossible. This apparently is the case with most copper ores, as discussed by Bachman, Last and Nabbs (1970) who described pilot testing of a large number of ore samples from Kennecott 's Chino Mines. Under circumstances where autogenous grinding is impractical, it is possible to realize most of its benefits by utilizing large grinding balls in place of the "competent" rock and practice what has become known in the mining industry as semiautogenous grinding. In semiautogenous grinding (SAG), a grate discharge tumbling mill is fed the product of a primary crusher or run-of-mine rock. Forged steel or alloy grinding balls, in proportions ranging from 3.10% of the total volume in the mill, are used to complement the self-grinding ability of the ore. Semiautogenous circuits can be either designed for single-stage closed-circuit grinding which produces a final product for recovery processes, or for two-stage operation in which the SAG mill product is fed to a second stage of grinding in a conventional ball mill.

Progress in mining and reduction methods and in transportation makes ore today of that which was waste yesterday. These are the fields of the metallurgists and the transportation engineers. The geologists and mining engineers must work together on the problem of ore finding. As the old prospector fades from the scene, men with equal hardihood and patience and equal power to meet the physical obstacles which confront the seeker after ore, must take his place, armed with all that has been learned from human experience about the causes, the controlling conditions, the indications, and hiding places of the metals. Este trabalho visou em compreender as características microestruturais de uma liga de NiTi rica em Ni deformada a quente por meio do processo de forjamento rotativo, que foram submetidas ao processo com temperaturas distintas de pré-aquecimento (800 e 950 ºC) sem e com tratamento térmico de recozimento prévio (950 ºC por 2 horas) para homogeneização do lingote. Por meio dos aspectos da evolução microestrutural verificados com auxílio das técnicas de Microscopia Óptica, Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura e difração de Raios X pôde-se observar que a adoção do recozimento prévio para homogeneização e incremento da temperatura de pré-aquecimento as etapas de forjamento rotativo a quente, conduziu a resultados mais satisfatório ao processamento termomecânico a ser aplicado nesta liga, a fim de seguir para as etapas de deformação a frio.

THE advent of curved jaw crusher wearing plates made an approach other than segmental layout analysis desirable for prediction of capacities. For some time it had been known that the drawing board capacities of crushers using these plates had to be considerably modified by complicated experience factors to achieve agreement with results. Because these apparent capacities could be readily increased severalfold by minor crushing chamber shape changes, it was necessary that the utmost precaution be taken in predicting capacities of jaw plates modified for nonchoking, special wear characteristics, or any other reason. To this end the laboratory and field tests outlined by the author in a previous paper1 were made on Blake-type jaw crushers. The results of these tests were summarized in a simple first degree equation applicable to crushers using either straight or curved jaw plates. This equation first outlines the maximum capacity potential of a given crusher, then reduces this figure in accordance with installation circumstances by means of a realization factor. It was found subsequently that this equation, with the addition of an eccentric throw factor, is applicable to standard types of single-toggle or overhead eccentric jaw crushers as far as maximum capacity potential is concerned. However, these crushers have realization factor curves somewhat different from those outlined for the Blake type. While this paper is concerned principally with standard type single-toggle crusher capacities, the evaluation of data obtained with these machines is simplified by comparative reduction to the 10 x 7 in. Blake-type equivalents upon which the summary of the preceding paper was made. Convertibility of data from one type of crusher to the other also tends towards confirmation of both. The agreement of these data is sufficient to be considered complimentary. Consequently the feed factors, f, previously reported for Blake crushers are slightly adjusted to an average with the single-toggle crusher results. In the case of corrugated jaw plates it is measured from the tip of one corrugation to the bottom of the valley opposite. t is the length of jaw stroke in inches at the bottom of the crushing chamber. It is the difference between open and close-side settings. n is rpm, or crushing cycles per minute, a is the nip-angle factor. It is unity for 26" and 3 pct greater for each less nip-angle degree. A nip-angle of 20" has an a value of 1.18, and an angle of 30" has an a value of 0.88, see Fig. 1. r is the realization factor. It is unity for perfectly uniform choke feeding and usually less for actual operating conditions according to the method of feeding used and the probabilities of hang-ups involving the size of feed and crusher opening. Approximate values are given by the curves in Fig. 2. These values are further reduced by intermittent feeding, e is the throw or diameter of gyration of the single-toggle crusher eccentric in inches. As evident in Fig. 1A, variation of feed size will generally have little effect on nip-angle if both jaw plates have flat areas. Jaw plates having continuous curvature, as in Fig. 1B will have different nip-angles, depending upon the size of feed. For test work as described in this paper this effect was accounted. For general compilation of capacities for average feeds it is suggested that the nip-angle be taken at the various settings computed, at an arbitrary level, such as is indicated in Fig. 1C. Data Evaluation To bring the Blake and single-toggle type crusher capacity test results to common terms for evaluation, all data are converted to terms of 10 x 7 in. Blake-type performance at conditions of 100 lb per cu ft, 10 in. chamber width, 250 rpm, 0.65 in. stroke, 3-in. openside setting, and 18° nip-angle. (The nip-angle of the 10x7 in. Blake is 18° at 3-in. setting.) The single-toggle crusher performances are also divided by the eccentric throw to bring this effect to unity. As outlined,' laboratory and field tests made on Blake-type crushers ranging from 10 x 7 in. to 60 x 48 in. were summarized along the foregoing conditions of speed, stroke, etc. This resulted in groups of data which correspond to feeds with fines, feeds

Upgrading of Indonesia's Bauxite by Washing Method There were eight bauxite samples used in this research, three samples from Kijang contain total SiO2 18.36 - 29.16 per cent, Al2O3 40.12 - 48.36 per cent, Fe2O3 4.27 - 5.13 per cent, one sample from Tayan, contains total SiO2 4.69 per cent, Al2O3 38.95 per cent, and Fe2O3 19.67 per cent, and four samples from Mempawah contain total SiO2 33.5 - 44.8 per cent, Al2O3 29.8 - 35.9 per cent, Fe2O3 7.29 - 9.88 per cent. All of those bauxite ores have not fulfilled the requirement for Bayer process yet; therefore simple up-grading using a rotary drum scrubber is needed. The scrubbing process was carried out with time variable up to 60 minutes with solid percentage applied was 50 per cent and rotary speed was set up 30 rev/min. The bauxite was washed by following steps: scrubbing, screening, drying, and finally it was analysed to show chemical content. The washed bauxite produced has size fraction that is retained on the 1.7 mm of screen opening. The result of the research shows that the higher alumina content of the raw bauxite, the longer washing time is needed moreover the higher quality of the washed bauxite is produced. The highest alumina content of the washed bauxite was 53.67 per cent with the alumina recovery was 89.66 per cent and the concentration ratio of 84.80 per cent was achieved within 20 minutes of washing time of the raw bauxite (Al2O3 48.36 per cent). The washed bauxite resulted from this research is suitable as a raw material for Bayer process.

Mining is recognised as being one of the most dangerous industries in the world due to the difficult working conditions. Working in such hazardous circumstances in an underground mine often results in a variety of accidents. The working conditions at Kazakhstan’s underground mines have deteriorated owing to a lack of a risk-reduction plan and methodology. This paper evaluates different underground mines in Kazakhstan and demonstrates the employed mining method and the observed failure modes. Risk assessment has long been recognised as a valuable technique for preventing accidents. In the underground mining sector, risk assessment tools play an important role in avoiding work-related accidents. However, geotechnical uncertainty is a significant source of severe incidents like stress-induced roof collapse, wedge failure, seismicity etc, which result in human and financial losses. A geotechnical risk assessment performed early in the mine design process might assist justify a different mine design component, such as different support systems for a dangerous location within the mine openings during mining. The goal of this research is to create a damage/failure database aiming at the development of a geomechanical risk assessment methodology. This work identifies a thematic structure linked to risk assessment and management for the examined Kazakhstan mining sector. As part of the developed database, the dominant modes of failure within the Kazakhstan underground mining conditions were investigated. The study will provide opportunities to establish future research objectives for Kazakhstan’s mining industry where there are significant gaps between state-of-the-art research and mining operations in practice.

While in some cases it is vitally important to measure the virgin stress in rock prior to tunnelling there are a number of cases where such stress measurement is really not required. The concept of having to have a number to put in a numerical model representing a continuum is often quite inappropriate. This paper discusses the cases when virgin stress measurement is required and the most appropriate means to measure it. The techniques discussed cover all of the overcoring systems, hydrofracture and borehole breakout measurements. It also covers the use of rock surface stress measurement, which is easy to perform and should be used to check for changing stress conditions. Unfortunately this technique has been ignored in recent times because engineers are addicted to numerical models requiring far field stresses rather than measuring the real values that exist where they matter – at the tunnel wall. A case is presented in which the measurement of surface stress in a tunnel boring machine tunnel enabled the far field stress to be determined in what must be the world’s largest overcore.CITATION:Gray, I, 2014. The Pipeline gold ore body was discovered in Lander County, NV in March 1991. Construction of the new mine and mill did not start until early March 1996. The $289-million project was placed on a fast-track development schedule upon completion of permitting and corporate approval. The mine and mill were commissioned 11 months after the start of construction and the project ended up $40 million under budget. Project design and construction management were provided by Placer Dome Project Development Division (PDD). History The Cortez Joint Venture has operated in northeast Lander County since the late 1960s. The business structure is comprised of 60% Placer Dome and 40%Kennecott Exploration. Throughout the years, production has been from several small open-pit deposits— Cortez, Horse Canyon, Gold Acres and now Pipeline.

Tailings dam failures continue to occur worldwide at an unacceptable rate, averaging two events annually over the last 100 years. Furthermore, tailings dams continue to grow in size, increasing the potential release of tailings and water should they fail. Tailings are generally deposited in a slurry state, with the potential to flow if containment is lost. Understanding the generation and propagation of excess pore water pressure on failure is critical to predicting the flow and run-out of tailings. This paper presents numerical modelling using the material point method indicating that tailings run-out processes may be self-enhanced by the excess pore water pressure induced during the collapse of the containment. Moreover, it is shown that geomorphological features, such as the slope and its surface roughness downstream of the tailings dam, influence the pore water pressure dynamics upstream of the advancing toe.CITATION:Llano-Serna, M A, Bu, L and Williams, D J, 2018. INTRODUCTION The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) has let a contract for the excavation of three rock stations, spaced about 3550' (1082m) apart, beneath Connecticut Avenue in Washington, D.C. Two previous rock stations have been completed, one of which had a crown pilot tunnel excavated to explore geologic conditions that would be encountered during the station excavation. This pilot tunnel was primarily for inspection by bidders and design was based on core hole information. The other rock station had no pilot tunnel and was also designed on the basis of core hole information. The three rock station areas, which are the subject of this paper, have been explored by crown pilot tunnels and an as-built report, with geologic maps and sections, has been prepared, for use by the design engineer as the basis of design for support of the structures. The geotechnical report describes the geologic structure in detail and relates it to excavation and support of the three crown pilot tunnels and the running tunnels which will be enlarged to create the 58'W x 44'H x 700'(+)L (17.6m x 13.3m x 212m +) stations. The information was complete enough to permit the design engineer to visualize the geologic structure and compute loads for the various types of rock conditions. It was therefore possible to determine the size and spacing of the steel sets for the several different conditions of rock structure encountered in the pilot tunnels.

ALL types of commercial phosphate rock produced throughout the world contain fluorine in quantities ranging from approximately 0.4 to 1.3 per cent in the Curacao and Christmas Island phosphates to 3.1 to 4.2 per cent in the phosphates of the United States and North Africa1. For a given type of rock, the fluorine content is usually roughly propor-tional to the phosphorus content. SIGNIFICANCE OF FLUORINE IN PHOSPHATE ROCK On the basis of chemical and X-ray diffraction studies, Hendricks and co-workers2 concluded that fluorapatite, Ca10F2(P04)6, is the essential phosphatic constituent of the commercial types of domestic phosphate rock. On the other hand, Bredig and co-workers3 have recently advanced the opinion, also based on X-ray diffraction studies, that the mineral phosphates usually contain carbon dioxide in the apatite lattice, and that the phosphate rocks of. the United States are really fluorcarbonate apatites. However, the domestic types of phosphate rock do not seem to differ greatly from coarsely crystalline fluorapatite in their behavior toward chemical reagents in general, and for the purpose of this paper it will suffice to consider fluorapatite as being the essential phosphatic constituent of these types of rock.

GENERAL OUTLINE For more than one hundred years, asbestos ore has been mined on Les Mines d’Amiante Bell's property at Thetford-Mines , Quebec, Canada. In 1878, the first tons of fibre were produced. The mine operated as an open pit until 1951 at a yearly production of about 330 000 mt of ore. Since 1951, the mine has operated underground using a block caving method. The mine produced 725 000 mt per year until 1978, when the rate of production was increased to 1 100 000 mt. The ore was produced entirely fm the first lift on 650 level until 1976. Then, a second lift on 950 level was put into operation to replace production facilities fm the first lift which is now exhausted. Annual fibre production is 72 500 mt with grades £ran 3 to 7. The total work force is 600 people. The host rock is a peridotite partially serpentinized. The asbestos fibre seams occur as stockwork deposit structurally controlled by talcose shear zone. The geological rock formations are heavily jointed and have a wide range of competence. Asbestos ore bodies have an heterogeneous nature which des difficult geological interpretation. THE GRIZZLY METHODS A full gravity method was used on the first level where the caved ore was drawn from finger raises onto grizzly bars spaced at 480 mn. Oversize blocks were reduced by secondary blasting. The ore fell by gravity in- to the ore pass below the grizzly chamber and was loaded into 5.7 mt haulage cars through a 1.2 m wide chute. Access to the undercut drift was fm the grizzly drift through finger raises. The undercut trough was drilled and blasted in a 1.2 m interval ring sequence into a slot situated at the end of each panel. The undercut stope was emptied through the finger raises. The undercut retreated from South to North at blast interval determined by the finger raises spacing. Fig. 1 represents the various steps involved with the grizzly method. Extraction drift dimensions were opened 1.8 m wide x 2.4 m high with anchor rock bolts and wire mesh where safety required them during excavation. Grizzly chambers were excavated at 2.4 x 2.4 x 4.6 m long on a 7.6 x 7.6 m grid spacing. Ore passes with dimensions of 1.5 x 1.5 m were developed from the haulage drift. On the extraction level, headings were drilled with jacklegs and cleaned by slusher into ore passes to the haulage chutes. The support used in the grizzly chambers was square concrete structure with 150 mn H beam reinforcement. The H beam was partially buried in the concrete and had one free face to allow for difference frequency of blast vibration between concrete and steel. The supported brow of the chamber had an opening 1.5 x 2.1 m. Ore passes were ring concreted 150 mn thick without any reinforcement. A 24 MPa compressive strength concrete was pumped and poured in pre-assembled forms. Based on the success of this method on the first level, the same layout was repeated on the second level. With the start of undercutting on the second lift, signs of deterioration were noticed in extraction drifts. At first, there was great concern as the operators were confident that standard repair techniques could cope with such a situation. An intensive program of support repair and a reduction of draw resulted. The following method of repairs were used: 1) Steel square sets of 150 mn H beam at 0.6 m intervals were installed. 2) This was reduced later to 0.3 m interval and eventually to a skin to skin steel structure. 3) Yieldable arches were introduced spaced at 0.9 m intervals, linked laterally with 150 m. H beam. 4) The yieldable arches spacing was then reduced to 0.46 m and eventually installed skin to skin. However, this support was not successful.
