Although copper ranks very low in the order of abundance of elements in the crust of the earth, it has been one of the first metals utilized by mar, at his emergence from the Stone Age, about 10,000 years ago. Use of copper for weapons, tools, utensils and ornaments dates back to the twilight of history, 6,000-5,000 B.C. Native copper outcrops and the malleability of the metal explain its very early use by the cave-dwellers. The working, melting and extraction of copper from its minerals are among the oldest metallurgical achievements of the human race. The oldest complete smelting installations for the extraction of copper from its minerals, dated about the fourth millenium B.C., were recently discovered in the Timna Valley, Wadi Arabah, Israel. (1) The history of the developments of the extractive metallurgy of copper has been adequately reviewed recently. (2,3) The center of copper production migrated from the Eastern Mediterranean to Northern Europe (Mansfeld, Germany, Swansea, Wales) towards the end of the Middle Ages (1500 A.D.). The production of the metal was boosted tremendously in North America since the end of the nineteenth century (Fig. 1).

Willemite is typically found in oxidized zinc ores and metallurgical secondary resources but without effective extraction method yet. Based on the ideas of zinc phase reconstruction in the willemite, the extraction of zinc from willemite by calcified-roasting using CaO as additive and ammonia-leaching process was studied in this paper. The influences of CaO dosage, roasting temperature, roasting time on the phase transformation and zinc leaching rate were studied, which were characterized by XRD. The results indicated that Zn2SiO4 was transformed into ZnO or Zn2CaSi2O7 .After roasted with 1.4 times of theoretical CaO dosage at l280 for 40 minutes, willemite was thoroughly transformed into ZnO. The zinc leaching rate of the roasted sample was 97.45% in NH4Cl-NH3 H2O leaching system, which increased by 91.40 % compared with zinc leaching rate of 6.05% when willemite was directly leached in NH4Cl-NH3 H2O system.

A novel hydrometallurgical process for the recovery of silver and gold from neutral leach residue that is based upon leaching with thiourea, is described. Laboratory and pilot plant studies have shown that 80-90% of the silver and 60-70% of the gold can be recovered by:? ( i) leaching zinc calcine with 'Spent electrolyte at pH 2.0-3.0 to generate a precious metal-bearing zinc ferrite residue, (ii) leaching of the thickened zinc ferrite with 3-5 g/L thiourea in a six stage carbon-in-pulp circuit, (iii) elution of silver and gold from the loaded carbon with a thiourea- butanol solution, (iv) thermal regeneration of the stripped carbon and (v) recovery of the precious metals from the pregnant eluate by cementation with zinc dust. The reasons for adopting the thiourea CIP leach and the preferred operating parameters for each process step are presented. The requirements for the destruction of any thiourea transferred to the zinc circuit are outlined, and the results of an integrated one tonne/day pilot plant operation at Canadian Electrolytic Zinc are given.

A new technology of bacterial leaching by means of the Thiobacillus ferrooxidance bacteria is proposed. The equations of reactions that describe of the first and the second stage of bacterial leaching of sulfide raw materials containing non-ferrous metals are given. The theory is analyzed and the technology of processing of some complicated substandard concentrate containing copper and zinc is proposed. The main technological operations including a two-stage bacterial leaching and stages of copper and zinc recovery in the form of marketable product are described. The results of the experimental validation of the main technological parameters of the first stage are given. The main possibilities of a more complete zinc and copper recovery at the second stage of bacterial leaching are discussed in comparison with single-stage leaching process.

"CSP thin slab continuous casters are well used in recent years. The control of heat transfer in the mold is very important because it is correlated with several slab defects. The mean heat flux of CSP mold was studied based on the plant production data of LCAK steel and weathering steel. The effect of various operation conditions on the heat flux was analyzed and discussed. The results showed that the heat flux was 2.1-2.6 MW/m2 on the wide face and 1.2-2.2 MW/m2 on the narrow face for the casting of LCAK steels. During the casting of weathering steel, the heat flus was mostly 2.05-2.5 MW/m2 on the wide face and was 1.1-1.8 MW/m2 on the narrow face. The heat flux depended largely on the casting speed. The heat flux on the wide face increased obviously with increasing casting speed when the casting speed was relatively low; however, at high speed, the heat flux increased slowly or kept constant. At low casting speed, the heat flux depended little on the superheat of the molten steel. The mean heat flux depended little on the level fluctuation at continuous casting mold.IntroductionCSP thin slab continuous casters are used more frequently in recent years for its low cost of construction and manufacturing. The structure of CSP mold is very different from that of conventional thick slab casting mold, inducing the difference of heat flux between them. There have been some studies about the heat flux of thick and medium slab casters [l, 2]. Heat transfer in the mold is very important for the solidification of molten steel because it is correlated with several slab defects such as slab break-out, longitudinal crack, and surface depression. Moreover, higher casting speed is desired to improve the productivity. The control of solidified shell is extremely important. The heat flux is largely influenced by several casting parameters such as the cooling intensity of the mold, the casting speed[3], the mold flux powder [3, 4] and the carbon content of steel as well [5]. The investigation on the heat flux and affecting parameters can help to understand the solidification of molten steel in the mold."

"EAF dust is categorized as a hazardous solid waste. EPA approves only two treatment methods: either sending the dust to zinc recycling facility, or stabilizing it first and then disposing it to a specially-lined landfill. Both treatment methods are costly to EAF steelmakers. In order to reduce the cost and even better to make profit from the dust, EAF steelmakers need to find a costeffective technology to separate zinc from EAF dust. This paper is dedicated to discussion of a novel recycling strategy: in-process separation of zinc from EAF dust. The concept of in-process separation of zinc from EAF dust is first defined, and then a simple Zn concentration model is developed. From this model, two approaches of in-process separation of zinc from EAF dust are derived: (1) prematurely capturing dust at very high temperature when zinc is still in vapor status, (2) prematurely collecting dust immediately after quickly cooling EAF off-gas from high temperature to low temperature. Next, thermodynamic analysis is conducted to understand zinc behavior in EAF off-gas. It is demonstrated in theory that zinc is in vapor status while it exits from electric arc furnaces. At last, recycling routes and economics of in-process separation of zinc from EAF dust are discussed.IntroductionElectric arc furnace (EAF) plays an increasingly important role in steel production. According to USGS, steel production from electric arc furnaces has long exceeded that from basic oxygen furnaces [JJ. In 2009, electric arc furnaces produced 64% of total steel in the United States.Along with the fast growth of EAF steel production, generation of EAF dust is also rapidly increasing. A survey by AIM Market Research showed that 10 - 20 kg EAF dust was generated for every ton of EAF steel produced [2] In 1999, the United States alone produced 770,000 metric tons of EAF dust [3] In Europe, annual generation rate of EAF dust is more than one million tons [4-5]. In Japan, about 450,000 tons of EAF dust is produced each year [6] Globally, total generation of EAF dust was estimated to be more than 5 million tons per year [5] EAF dust is categorized as a hazardous solid waste since it often contains heavy metals, such as lead, chromium and cadmium. US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approves only two methods for treating EAF dust: (1) recycling the dust by EAF-dust recyclers, and (2) specially landfilling the dust for disposal after it is chemically stabilized. These two methods of treating EAF dust are both very costly to EAF steelmakers. It was estimated that a fee of $150 to $200 per ton of EAF dust was paid for various treatment options, which added approximately $2 - 3 cost for every ton of liquid steel produced by electric arc furnaces [?J."

"Function of High Pressure Roll Grinding (HPRG) in production of oxidized pellets from magnetite concentrate as raw material was systematically studied. It was found that bentonite dosage decreased from 1.3% to 0.8% if specific surface area of magnetite concentrate pretreated by HPRG was up to 2553.41cm2.g-1. The green ball quality improved obviously due to the increase of specific surface area and fine particles content, and the improvements of size distribution and the ballability of pretreated materials. However, the decrease of pellet porosity accelerated the primary solid phase reaction and oxidation reaction, which made the pellets surface form compacted layer that handicapped the diffusion and migration of oxygen, promoting the formation of double layer structure of finished pellet. Consequently, the compression strength of preheated and roasted pellets was not markedly improved by HPRG.IntroductionWith the increase of proportion of pellets in the BF recently, the technical-economic index of BF has obviously been improved. Consequently, the production and the quality of BF pellet are given more attention [1]. However, with the decrease of the quality of iron ore concentrate, the problems such as poor ballability, high bentonite dosage, high preheating and roasting temperature are becoming the great challenges to not only the quality of finished pellets, but also the energy consumption [2, 3]. In order to overcome these problems, mechanical pretreating technologies such as the High Pressure Roll Grinding (HPRG) and Damp-grinding are widely applied. HPRG has a number of advantages such as low energy consumption, high productivity and easy-maintaining. It is more economic and environmentally friendly than the Damp-grinding technology [4, 5]. A great number of experiments have revealed that HPRG can improve the quality of hematite pellets. Although there are some studies of function of HPRG in the magnetite oxidized pellet production, they are not comprehensive and systematic, especially to the preheating and roasting system [1, 2, 6, 7]. Accordingly, the influence of HPRG on the pelletizing system and the preheating and roasting system are systematically studied in production of magnetite oxidized pellets in this article."

The rotary kiln-electric furnace (RKEF) process is the main method for producing ferronickel from nickel laterite ore. However, this process is energy intensive as it involves several high temperature steps. Therefore, a novel process is proposed to directly produce ferronickel from nickel laterite ore by semi-molten reduction, which is expected to be realized in a rotary hearth furnace (RHF). The RHF process is able to shorten the flow sheet, decrease the reaction temperature as well as reduce energy consumption. In this study, the influence of basicity on reduction of nickel laterite ore was investigated. The results showed that it is possible to produce the ferronickel nugget directly at 1400 °C when the quaternary basicity [(mCaO + mMgO)/(mSiO2 + mAl2O3)] was fixed at 0.60. Under this experimental condition, the grade and the recovery ratio of nickel reached 11.53% and 98.59%, and the grade and recovery ratio of Fe were 84.16% and 68.72%, respectively.

Kennecott recently completed an $880 million modernization and expansion of its smelter and refinery to process all concentrates from the Bingham Canyon mine. This is the first application of Kennecott-Outokumpu Flash Converting. Molten material movement by overhead cranes is eliminated and high levels of oxygen enrichment result in very low process gas volumes and exceptionally control of sulfur oxide emissions. All existing in-plant hygiene, safety, and environmental regulations will be met and the smelter is positioned for anticipated more stringent future regulations. Sulfur capture is 99.9 percent resulting in sulfur dioxide emissions less than the 112 kg/hr Air Permit limit, making the smelter the cleanest in the world.

"By 2015, nearly half the world's population will live in ""water stressed"" areas. Production of fresh water utilizing waste heat from industrial processes has been identified globally as a research priority.About 15% of the electricity required to produce aluminum is lost as waste heat in the off-gas. However, the low temperature (low grade) of the heat limits reuse. The off-gases contain 50-150 ppm SO2 ; tightening regulations coupled with increasing coke sulfur levels are motivating SO2 control, for which seawater scrubbing is attractive for smelters with suitable access.We describe a process that produces fresh water, utilizing the waste heat while scrubbing SO2 . It uses direct contact between seawater and off-gas to humidify the off-gas. The vapor is subsequently condensed. In smelter trials, a unit treating a slip stream produced high quality water in the anticipated quantity, attaining over 95% SO2 scrubbing. Future work involves scaling the process to be economically attractive.BackgroundPopulation growth, coupled with industrialization and urbanization, are increasing demand for water. Water scarcity already affects every continent. Around 1.2 billion people, or almost one-fifth of the world's population, live in areas of water scarcity, and 500 million people are approaching this situation. By 2025, 1.8 billion people will be living in countries or regions with absolute water scarcity, and two-thirds of the world's population could be living under water stressed conditions (< 1,700 m3 per person annually) [1]. An assessment by the U.S. General Accounting Office revealed that under normal conditions, by 2013, water managers in 36 states in the USA anticipate water shortages, and that the number might grow to 46 states under drought conditions [2].The obvious choice to alleviate water scarcity is the 97% of available water in the oceans, which is saline and requires desalination for use in biological, agricultural and industrial applications. Technologies developed for desalination include Thermal Distillation, Reverse Osmosis (RO), Electro-Dialysis, and Vacuum Freezing. Distillation and RO are the most commercially prominent. Thermal distillation technologies include Multiple Effect Distillation (MED) and Multi-Stage Flashing (MSF). The report commissioned by the World Bank [3] is one of the many excellent references on desalination technologies. According to the International Desalination Association working paper [4], there were more than 17,348 industrial scale desalination plants installed or contracted by 2004. The total production from these plants is on the order of 8.3 billion imperial gallons per day. RO provides 47.2% of the total capacity. The leading thermal process, MSF, provides 36.5% of the total capacity. Although MSF and RO technologies currently provide the most cost effective means for desalination, their drawback is that they are very energy intensive, and whether or not they remain cost effective strongly depends on energy prices and energy supply."

Iron-free titanium oxycarbonitride (TiOxCyNz) is a promising feedstock for production of titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) at low temperatures. In this study, the effects of leaching variables such as temperature, time, particle size of staring material and concentration of the leaching solutions were evaluated on iron removal from nitrided Malaysian ilmenite by Becher process. The nitrided ilmenite was prepared by isothermal reduction with graphite at 1200 °C for 3 h in H2-N2 atmosphere. The aerated leaching experiments were conducted at 50–90 °C with addition of 0.3–2.0 wt% of NH4Cl catalyst. The highest extent of iron removal (XFe) was obtained at about 96.2% for the sample leached at 90 °C for 7 h with 2.0 wt% NH4Cl. The iron concentrate and titanium oxycarbonitride product were characterized by ICP-OES, XRD, XRF and SEM-EDX analyses. The results indicated that the aeration leaching process was a successful route to prepare low-iron titanium oxycarbonitride.

A fused salt electrochemical process was investigated for the synthesis of non-oxide ceramic powders directly from metal oxides, boric oxide, and carbon powders by electro-deoxidation. Sintered pellets of the mixed powders were designed to act as a composite cathode in the electrolytic cell. Electrolysis was carried out in molten CaCl2-NaCl eutectic at 3.1 V and at 600-900 ºC under argon. The favoured cathodic reaction was the removal of the oxygen from the oxides to produce metal atoms that reacted with either the reduced boron atoms, forming a metal boride, or the carbon initially present in the sintered pellets to produce a metal carbide. The technical viability of the process was demonstrated by the electro-deoxidation of sintered pellets of TiO2/B2O3 and TiO2/C to produce TiB2 and TiC, respectively. Compared to existing carbothermic reduction process, this new electrochemical process may be less energy intensive and may lead to lower production costs. I

The vapor pressures of FeCL2 and ZnCL2 in the FeCL2?ZnCL2 system were measured by the transpiration method at 873K and 9I7K, The vapor pressure data were interpreted to indicate the formation of complex ions in the FeCL2?ZnCL2 melts, It is presumed that the complex molecule FeZnCl4 as well as FeCL2 and ZnCL2 exists in the vapors in equilibrium with molten FeCL2-ZnCL2 mixtures, The activities in the FeCL2-ZnCL2 system are shown a negative deviation from Raoult&apos;s law. These results suggest the formation of complex ions such as ZnCL14 in molten FeCI2?ZnCL2 mixtures.

"This paper describes a new processing of ultrafine, magnetic ferrites from sulfuric acid pickling solution in steel industry. In the ferrite processing, the iron (II) in the pickling solution was first oxidized to iron (III) by using the acidophilic thennophile Acidianus brierleyi. The bio-oxidized pickling solution was treated with solvent extraction to separate the iron (III) into the organic solution of tertiary aliphatic monocarboxylic acid. After that, the carboxylate solutions of iron (III) and other metal (cobalt) were hydrolyzed and precipitated ultrafine particles of crystalline ferrites at l90°C and l. 3 MPa for 20 min.IntroductionHot-rolled steel sheet has always a layer of oxides on its surface. The oxide layer arises as scale in hot rolling processes in steel industry, and the scale consists of the three iron oxides such as hematite Fez03, magnetite Fep4, and wustite FeO. Pickling removes chemically the scale layer that adheres to the steel surface. For normal steels, pickling is carried out in 15-20% hydrochloric acid at 60-70°C or in 20-25% sulfuric acid at 95-100°C. When steel is pickled with sulfuric acid, the scale oxides dissolve to give iron (II) sulfate.Spent pickling solutions are hazardous wastes containing a large amount of dissolved iron (II) and sulfuric acid, e.g., about 40 kg/m3 of dissolved iron (II) at pH 0. In typical commercial processes, spent pickling solution is usually cooled evaporatively to 5°C, and then to 0°C to crystallize iron (II) sulfate as its heptahydrate. After the crystallization operation, the sulfuric acid can be reused in the pickling operation.In this paper we describes a new processing of ultrafine, magnetic ferrite from sulfuric acid pickling solution, in order to recover dissolved iron (II) in the form of a valuable product. In the ferrite processing, the iron (III) was first supplied by the microbial oxidation of iron (II) in the pickling solution, and then the biooxidized pickling solution was treated with solvent extraction to separate the iron (III) into the organic carboxylate solution. After that, the carboxylate solutions of iron (III) and other metal (cobalt) were precipitated crystalline ferrites under hydrothermal conditions."

Monazite, one of the major sources of rare earths, is normally opened by digestion with hot concentrated caustic soda solution. Caustic digestion dissolves phosphate and leaves a hydrated mixed metal oxides cake containing thorium, uranium and rare earths. By leaching this cake with hydrochloric acid at pH 3.0 to 3.2 bulk of the rare earths are preferentially removed and separated. The slurry left after removal of major portion of rare earths contains all the thorium and uranium present In the feed monazite. In addition this slurry also contains substantial quantities of rare earths. Solvent extraction tests were carried out to develop a process to separate rare earths, thorium and uranium present in the mixed chloride solution obtained by dissolving the above slurry in hydrochloric acid. Based on these tests a solvent extraction flow sheet was developed with di-2-ethyl hexyl phosphonic acid mono 2-ethyl hexyl ester as the extractant. The details of experimental work and results obtained are discussed and a flow sheet for processing monazite Incorporating the new process is suggested.

Electrolytic manganese dioxide, EMD, is the positive electrode material of primary batteries and the raw material of LMC used as the positive mass of lithium ion batteries and is currently produced by anodic deposition on and harvesting from a titanium anode in acidic manganese sulfate solutions prepared by dissolving high purity of manganese sulfate into sulfuric acid solutions. This paper presents an alternative method of EMD production using a novel anode, Mn2O3 coated titanium, at lower operating temperature than the current process to explore a possibility of manganese recovery from zinc electrowinning solutions. The Mn2O3/ Ti anode prepared by thermal decomposition of a precursor solution containing Mn (II) showed the anodic deposition of MnO2 by constant current electrolysis and the current efficiency was 95% in maximum, while the current efficiency and the crystallographic structure of deposited MnO2 depended on the current density, the electrolysis time, the bath temperature, and the concentration of Mn(II). The deposited MnO2 was successfully harvested from the anode and the recovery rate was 98%.

Total pressure oxidation (TPOX) is widely outreached leaching practice for base metals from sulfide minerals, wherein high temperature (T ∼ 200 °C) and oxygen pressure (pO2 ∼ 25 bar) are required. These aggressive conditions intensify the oxygen mass transfer, and therefore facilitate metal dissolution. However, challenging-cum-negative aspects of such practice are energy and material intensive requirements and high oxygen demand. Thus, the present study explores the novel emulsified medium for enhancement of oxygen mass transfer, which assists faster metal dissolution at significantly lower temperature and pressure condition. It is possible to achieve quantitative dissolution (>95%) of Cu, Ni and Co from mixed sulfide minerals at T ∼ 95 °C and pO2 ∼ 2 bar using an emulsion of 2.5% (v/v) n-Hexadecane in dilute sulfuric acid. In addition, n-Hexadecane was found to be inert, stable and immiscible in a pressurized leaching system, thus can be easily separated and recycled in subsequent leaching stages. Thus, this study offers an energy efficient route for low temperature-pressure leaching of sulfides.

Processing of Egyptian barite ore with a composition of 85.5% BaSO4; 2.75%SiO2;1.56%Fe2O3 and 5.1% Al2O3 was performed with the aim to prepare pure barium salts. The process took place through pelletization-solid state reduction and leaching steps. Each of these steps was optimized. Pure barium sulphate (99% < 0.82µm) and carbonate (99%<0.75µm )were the final products. This article deals with the reduction process that occur whn coal was added to the ore during pelletization in the ratio of 5:1 stoichiometry. Optimum reduction of pellets of 8-12mm in diameter was achieved after 60 minutes at 1050oC and under a rate of 5 lmin-1 of nitrogen atmosphere, where 87.79% of the ore was reduced. The kinetic studies showed that the reduction process could be modeled according to the core mechanism of diffusion control in which the effective diffusivity is based on the surface area of unreacted ore. The activation energy calculated was 92.7 kJmol-1.

The Zinc Corporation of South Africa Ltd. (Zincor) operates an integrated roast ? leach ? electrowinning circuit. The efficient removal and control of iron forms an integral part of the process. Zincor developed its own iron removal process (Zincor Process), which was recently shown to be unique with some similarities to the para-goethite iron removal process. Newly developed operating parameters for iron removal are in the process of being implemented. These include a change in the pH-profile and operating temperature, the recycling of seed material and the utilisation of an alternative neutralising agent to aid iron removal. Some of these actions, together with the implementation of a pre-neutralisation step, new filtration equipment and control systems in Zincor?s Residue Treatment Plant have significantly reduced zinc losses associated with iron in calcine and the iron residue produced. This enabled Zincor to take a step closer to world-class zinc recovery levels of around 96% for a similar type of operation.

Rechargeable lithium batteries are one of the most promISIng technology in battery development. Although Li ion batteries have been used as an alternative to the more polluting and less performing Ni-Cd batteries, Li ion batteries have limited life and their disposal is uncertain. It is imperative that valuables from wastes, such as lithium, should be recovered. The main objective of the present work was to characterize secondary lithium batteries for cellular phones. This was done using unit operations of mining processing, x-ray diffraction (XRD), chemical analyses and the rmogravimetric analysis (TG). The unit operations were hammer mill grinding, knife mill grinding, size separation and magnetic separation. After the hammer grinding process, the plastic cases were almost intact, however, they have released the cylindrical lithium batteries themselves and these parts correspond to 70% of the total battery weight.
