The salt gradient solar pond has been the focal point of accelerating international attention and interest in recent months. Only recently have most investigators in the renewable energy field come to realize the versatility of the solar pond, and its ability to overcome certain problems usually associated with solar technologies. These realizations, together with clear demonstrations in Israel and elsewhere of its technical feasibility, have combined to bring the solar pond to the forefront of renewable energy technologies. The solar pond is a natural or site-built pond, about one to five meters or more in depth, which has been altered to retard the loss of absorbed solar energy. The absorbed solar energy is usually lost through upward buoyancy of the warmed water, followed by the loss of its heat to the atmosphere. The chief solar pond technology -the salt gradient, or "nonconvective" solar pond-prevents this upward buoyancy by means of a vertical density gradient achieved with dissolved salt. The deep waters in the solar pond reach high temperatures, up to and even above the boiling point of pure water.

In Nevada, large deposits of diatomite were formed during the Miocene / Pliocene in deep, alkaline lakes. Associated sediments are predominately fine-grained lacustrine with varying fluvial-clastic layers. Tephra layers are common, and probably served as a source of soluble silica for the extensive diatom colonies. Four companies are currently producing diatomite from Nevada deposits. Nevada ranks second to California in annual domestic production. Nevada diatomite is used in filter aids, fillers, absorbents, catalyst supports, and many other products. Economics and mineral reserves indicate that diatomite production in Nevada will be significant well into the next century.

Commercial grade gypsum beds up to 16 feet thick is present in southwestern Indiana. The major deposits are found at a depth of 350 feet to more than 500 feet below the surface. The ore body averages about 75 to 95 percent gypsum. Two companies are currently exploiting a deposit which underlies an area of several square miles near Shoals, in Martin County. Another deposit has been located in southwestern Owen County but has not been developed. The Indiana Geological Survey is currently drilling in Greene County and is considering further exploratory work in Perry end Dubois Counties.

During the summer and fall of 1973 a series of Skylab and high-altitude aircraft overflights provided excellent hard-copy photographs of the Great Basin. These photographs, with a wide range of ground resolution were used by the NASA Project of the University of Nevada, Reno, to conduct specific geologic studies. The principal objectives of these studies were to: select individual areas covered by Skylab photography for detailed studies, develop mapping techniques using varied film-filter products with a wide range of ground resolution, compare the results of the mapping techniques to existing geologic maps at comparable scales, verify the results wherever possible by direct field observations. These studies were conducted by Jack Quade and Dennis Trexler and by graduates and undergraduates of the Reno campus under a contract with the Manned Spacecraft Center Houston, Texas.

Crushing and grinding practice in Sweden follows largely the international pattern. Certain special circumstances, however, have had an influence on the development. Most mines are worked underground in either quite small or in very large units. To utilize small sulphide ores, custom milling is rather common. Apart from the cement industry, the rock species treated are hard and abrasive. Another important factor is the increasingly strict requirements placed on the mechanical condition of different products, especially lump ores and coarse iron ore concentrates. A significant feature in the design and development of Swedish crushing and grinding practice has also been close cooperation between machinery manufacturers and the users. An account of these conditions and an outline of the crushing and grinding techniques employed in Sweden are presented in this paper with emphasis on the mining industry. For background purposes it may be mentioned that crude ore production in Sweden last year included 45 mill. tonsx) of iron ore, of which some 20 mill. tons from Kiruna alone, and 4 mill. tons of sulphide ore from 22 other mines, fig. 1. In addition 8 mill. tons of limestone were quarried for cement production and several million tons of stone and sand for roads, aerated concrete, etc.

A reaction is evaluated by which heated and pressurized water is used to precipitate metal oxides from loaded Kelex 100 complexes. Pure copper oxide (CuO) and pure nickel (Nio) in powder form, and ranging in average size from 12 to 25 micrometers, were found to precipitate from copper and nickel loaded Kelex 100/kerosene complexes, by water heated and pressurized to between 374 and 400 °c and 2170 psig (148 atm) and 3500 psig (238 atm). The precipitation is suggested to result from hydrolysis of the metal, following exchange for the hydrogen in the phenolic hydroxyl of the Kelex 100 structure, enhanced by the conditions provided by heated and pressurized water. The reaction is believed to have the characteristics of homogeneous nucleation and heterogeneous growth. The effects of temperature, pressure, initial metal concentration and seed addition on the kinetics of the process were studied. In addition, characterization studies were performed on the reaction products. A detailed discussion of the experimental results is presented.

"In Crossrail’s Farringdon station, compensation grouting was successfully utilized to mitigate the surface settlements induced by the tunneling works. The main focus of this study was the platform tunnels, which were approximately 300m long each and were enlarged to platform size using sequential excavation method (SEM) from the existing TBM running tunnels, initially supported using sprayed concrete linings. The rear grouting injections were carried out at a typical distance of minimum 5m above the completed, fully strengthened shotcrete lining hence inducing some additional stresses. In-tunnel monitoring using surveying targets was performed systematically to ensure that no excessive distortion of the initial shotcrete lining occurred. 3D finite element analyses were utilized to back calculate the actual “effective” pressure that was imposed on the completed shotcrete rings against the additional measured in-tunnel displacements due to the compensation grouting episodes. Additionally an assessment of the theoretical, “maximum” allowable grouting pressures that would lead to overstressing of the lining is presented. INTRODUCTION As part of the back analysis performed for the SEM tunnels in Farringdon station, an investigation of the effect of compensation grouting on the two constructed platform tunnels was undertaken. The platform tunnels were 10.6m high by 11.4m wide and approximately 300m long each. They were enlarged to their final shape from the existing TBM tunnels using SCL methods. This study utilized 2D and 3D finite element (FE) analyses in order to back calculate the observed tunnel crown displacement, assessing the equivalent grouting pressures during the rear injection episodes of the concurrent grouting operations. The results provide a useful reference for the order of magnitude of the grouting pressure load cases that can be applied in the numerical simulation of similar cases. Part of the results presented in this paper, were derived by the second author as part of his Master of Science thesis in Technical University of Graz."

This paper describes several variants of placement and design, from a technical and economic point of view, of shafts, ore bunkers and drifts near shafts of a Russian potash mine. Advantages and disadvantages of the position of different workings are shown as well as an analysis of stratigraphic and geological layers and their use for excavating pit bottoms, haulage drifts and bunker installations. The potash mine consists of two hoisting shafts and one service shaft. The hoisting capacity of one of these skip shafts is planned to be approx. 7 Million tons of crude potash salt per year. Both shafts together will have a hoisting volume of about 14 Million tons. When the mine will increase their highest level of production, it will be one of the biggest potash mines in the world. The skips, the hoist drives and the bunker near the shaft will belong to the largest ones worldwide, too. This paper specifies the features of such a double skip shaft pit in detail and demonstrates problems, which depend on the fact that the pit bottom is in a depth of nearly 1200 m.

Magnesium is listed as a key critical raw material in a report by the European Commission that evaluated raw materials based on supply risk versus economic importance [1]. It has extraordinary properties, such as nontoxicity, inertness, high melting point, stability, low weight, chemical resistance, electrical insulation, optical transparency, corrosion-resistant behavior and refractory nature. It is widely used in the areas of agriculture; the environment, for antibacterial and water-purification purposes; electronics; automotive; drug delivery; ceramics; construction, as filler in brick; and concrete production, in the forms of magnesium oxychloride and magnesium oxysulfate. Magnesium oxide (MgO) particles can be produced through the calcination of magnesite ore at different calcination conditions depending on the desired quality of the product, classified as fused (2,800 °C), dead-burned (>1,400 °C), hard-burned (1,000–1,400 °C), or light-burned MgO (700–1,000 °C) [2]. However, the global availability of magnesite ore is limited.

Lignite and subbituminous coals are utilized essentially as mined without beneficiation. Most of the present production is used to generate electric power and the major problem in this use is ash deposition on fireside surfaces. The preparation at existing mines involves principally crushing and screening operations. Blending of production from different locations within the mine is practiced in several mines to control ash composition. Drying and oil treatment for freezeproofing, of lignite are used to a limited extent during winter. Future processing may involve both washing and drying operations to alter ash composition by ion exchange and upgrade the low-rank fuels to higher heating values. Research has been initiated to determine the feasibility of such processing.

The following is a sample of some of the technical sessions as seen through the eyes of the editors of Mining Engineering and SME technical papers.SME Sections Sharing Success: Changing thePublic Perception of MiningThis session was a workshop on how several local sections were effective in getting the message out to their communities and schools about the value of the extractive minerals industry. Several sections shared their outreach successes, including the Mining in Society merit badge activities by the Minnesota Section by Julie Lucas and SME’s participation in the World Scout Jamboree in Japan by Frank McAllister.Dan Alexander highlighted activities by the Pittsburgh Section, such as preparing minerals kits and pamphlets for elementary school classes and regional science fairs. The West Virginia University Student Chapter used the kits as handouts at their local gem and mineral show. P.L. 95-87 contains explicit demands for land-use planning in its reclamation and designation sections. Both sections require recognition of local land-use plans; however, the sections are not well integrated. Accommodations to these planning requirements may be found in suggestions based on British mineral planning practice. Better links can be created among local land-use planners, the state's permitting authority and designation office, and mine designers. Mining companies should take more interest in local land-use plans and in resource inventories; states should consider devolving to local government responsibility for accepting mine permit applications and designation of unsuitability petitions.

Experience at Energy West Mines in the Wasatch Plateau Coal Field, Utah, has shown that longwall face bursts occur mostly near the tailgate when extracting the third adjacent longwall in a panel section where depths exceed 610 m (2000 ft). It is believed that this is due to a combination of cover depth and side abutment stresses created by the widening of a pressure arch formed by interlocking and bridging of large blocks of" very competent strata. The 60-m-thick (200 ft) Castlegate Sandstone probably plays a key role in pressure arching. This paper presents a back-analysis of the location and magnitude of the stresses associated with face bursts that occurred when mining the 7th Right Longwall at the Deer Creek Mine. Improvement of these conditions may be achieved by widening the longwalls to attain critical subsidence width sooner while mining the second long-wall, and to reduce stresses at the face. Wider longwall faces, however, increase the chance of sandstone channel interception often associated with bursts. Satisfactory mitigation of face bursts beyond cover depths of 610 to 670 m (2000 to 2200 ft) may be difficult without using destressing techniques. The hydraulic fracturing/liquid infusion technique seems to offer the best possibilities for application in longwall mining.

In underground coal mines, three types of roof failure (2)*, tensile, local, and shear, occur in the development entries and in room-and-pillar extraction areas. Most of the tensile failures in the roof at the center of the mine opening as well as those local failures due to fracture or jointing can be controlled by roof bolts, trusses, and timbering. However, control of the shear failure at the sides of the roof (or the cutter-roof caving) has not been successful with ordinary roof control methods. The only effective method, when there is an indication of cutter-roof caving, is to use cribs, which are costly and make transportation, ventilation, and production difficult. Frequently, the operator allows the cutter roof to cave and then cleans it up rather than trying to stop it. This shear type of roof failure is often associated with large areas which may progressively involve several hundred feet of roof caving at one occurrence. At times, this shear failure occurs suddenly with little or no warning. This can result in buried equipment and great danger to the safety of personnel. This shear failure may be due to one or more of the following: high stress concentrations at the corner of the roof from (1) high horizontal to vertical load ratio, (2) orthotropic elastic properties of rock and coal, (3) greater stiffness of the immediate roof layer than of the secondary roof layer, (4) viscoelastic behavior of rock and coal, and (5) geometry and material properties of the geologic setting. Once an ore body has been probed and outlined, and sufficient information has been collected to warrant further analysis, the important process of selecting the most appropriate method or methods for mining can begin. At this stage, the selection is preliminary only, serving as the basis for a project layout and feasibility study. Later, it may be found necessary to revise the details, but the basic principles for the ore extraction should remain a part of the final layout. With respect to the basic principles employed, relatively few mining methods are used today. For the purposes of this presentation, the principles are classified as follows: 1) For naturally supported stopes, the available methods are room-and-pillar mining and sublevel stoping. 2) For artificially supported stopes, the available methods are shrinkage stoping, cut-and-fill mining, square-set mining, and longwall mining. 3) For caving methods, the available techniques are sublevel caving and block caving. Due to the uniqueness of each ore deposit, the variations on each of these methods are nearly limitless. It is impossible to include even the major variations in this chapter; the goal of this chapter is to present the principles as a guide to the mining engineer in adapting the general methods to specific needs. The selection process described herein is intended to supply the techniques by which the candidate methods available for a given ore body can be reduced to one or two feasible approaches. The feasible approaches then can be evaluated in detail, and the particular modifications can be investigated. In describing costs and economic factors, all values herein are expressed in terms of 1978 US dollars.

The effects of autogenous grinding and conventional grinding on the floatabilities of copper-nickel sulfides were investigated as a part of a pilot-plant development project on the differential flotation of Duluth gabbro. At the same mesh-of-grind copper, nickel, and cobalt recoveries were higher and residual sulfur in the flotation tailings was lower with the autogenously-ground pulps. With the ball-mill-ground pulps the residual sulfur in the tailings could not be lowered to the level attained by the autogenously-ground pulps even at increased levels of the collector addition. From mineralogical examinations of concentrate and tailings samples, an electrochemical interaction between grinding media and sulfide minerals was thought to have a greater effect on sulfide mineral flotation behavior than the breakage characteristics of the ore samples in these two types of mills.

A brief literature review on metal separations by ion exchange and solvent extraction of their thiocyanate complexes which are practiced in analytical chemistry as well as in industries was performed. Owing to the poor stability of free thiocyanic acid in acidic aqueous and organic media, technical and environmental problems which cause high thiocyanate consumptions often arise during the practice of the separation processes. This prompted the conducting of a second and more thorough literature review on the chemistry of thiocyanic acid. The objectives of this undertaking are to compile and interpret literature data on the physical properties and chemical reactions of thiocyanic acid, thus providing a clearer understanding of the causes of these problems and giving options as to how to minimize them. The best answer found for carrying out the separation processes is to keep the temperature, thiocyanic acid concentration and total acidity as low as practical.

"It is widely known that steel made from iron ore pellets high in phosphorus is brittle. Removal of phosphorus from iron ores such as hematite has proven to be difficult. The majority of research on phosphorus removal from hematite ores has been focused on flotation. The purpose of this study was to assess phosphorus distribution under current operations at an existing hematite concentrator and determine how efficient the plant is at removing phosphorus. Objectives included: (1) Perform a phosphorus balance at an operating plant to assess phosphorus distribution under current operations; (2) Determine phosphorus removal efficiency of each separating unit and (3) Perform a quantitative liberation analysis to determine max phosphorus removal by physical means. Liberation was quantitatively determined using wet high intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS) to separate iron ore from liberated apatite (and other nonmagnetic compounds).It was observed that 61.2% of the total phosphorus entering Plant F was rejected during current operations. The desliming process was the most efficient step at removing phosphorus (45.1% P removed), whereas the flotation step was much less effective (16.1% P removed). Liberation analyses indicated that the deslime thickener may have been more efficient at removing phosphorus than the flotation circuit due to the greater abundance of liberated phosphorus in the deslime thickener feed. The scavenger returns stream was identified as having a high concentration of phosphorus and a possible point of phosphorus removal. However, liberation analyses indicated that only 32.4% of the total phosphorus in the stream was liberated. Grinding the scavenger returns to 80% passing 5.2 µm increased the amount of liberated phosphorus in the stream to 70.4%."

INTRODUCTION The Morenci-Metcalf district is located on the southern slope of the white Mountains in Greenlee County, Arizona. Both porphyry copper deposits are four to six miles northwest of Clifton, the county seat, and the new Metcalf mine is situated approximately one mile northeast of the Morenci open pit (Figure 1). Chase Creek, a south-flowing tributary of the San Francisco River, dissects the district and separates the two ore bodies. More than 1,200 exploration and development drill holes have been completed in the district and the Morenci-Metcalf ore bodies have been delineated on a 400-foot grid. Recently initiated drilling programs have revealed new data about deeper protore and associated hypogene alteration. This information, correlated with surface mapping and petrographic studies, was utilized to propose a plausible geochronologic sequence for this region. The reasoning behind this study has been helpful in locating new ore beneath leached capping indicative of only protore mineralization. The scope of this paper is to establish a practical solution to a highly theoretical problem of ore genesis and to familiarize the reader with stratigraphic, structural, and mineralogic events responsible for localizing ore in this district. Continued research will possibly alter the proposed time span and relative displacements, but it is doubtful that the order of events will vary significantly. Geochronologic conclusions are therefore presented as general hypotheses and additional geologic mapping,
