It was attempted to revitalize an old sulfide leach dump by increasing the oxygen content within the dump. Compressed air was introduced into the old dump. This was accomplished by drilling 300 foot angle holes into the dump surface with an Aardvark drill which holes are then cased with 1-1/2 inch perforated PVC pipe. Compressed air is injected through these cased holes during a 10 day rest cycle. The second case consists of bedding perforated polyethylene pipe at the interface between the old dump surface and the next Lift of a new dump. Compressed air is then blown through the bedded perforated pipe on a continuous basis while leach solution is applied.

A physical model of flotation, derived from viewing froth as a kinetic species since it constitutes the carrier of ore particles, not only agrees with and is simulated by engineering math models, but is statistically verified by actual laboratory flotation data. The model couples the mechanical removal of froth using paddles with the more rapid chemical interactions taking place in the bath. It clearly shows that the kinetics of mass removal is dictated by flotation cell dimensions, paddle speed, and, more importantly, froth characteristics. Some conclusions and predictions of the model are presented.

"The application of passive tracer gas sources in underground mines is particularly useful for long-term tracer studies as well as for studies conducted in permissible areas of underground coal mines. The use of passive perfluoromethylcyclohexane (PMCH) sources has been previously demonstrated in underground mines, but this new work details the testing of multiple, distinct tracer compounds compatible with passive sources. A description of their potential application in mine ventilation systems is also provided. Three tracer compounds are detailed: (1) PMCH, (2) perfluoroethylcyclohexane (PECH) and perfluoromethylcyclopentane (PMCP). The release rates of these tracers were examined over a 180-day period at multiple temperatures. The advantages and disadvantages of these sources are presented, along with potential applications in characterizing ventilation circuits, flow through gob and leakage. IntroductionThe use of tracer gases for ventilation applications is an established practice, with various past research projects conducted using sulfur hexafluoride (SF6). Tracer gas techniques have been applied to assess flow rates, dilutions rates and auxiliary ventilation system efficiencies with quick, reliable and accurate results (Suglo and Frimpong, 2002). Perfluorocarbon tracer (PFT) compounds are a new introduction to ventilation and air modeling applications in terms of ventilation flow characterization (Watson et al., 2007).PFTs are liquids that are characterized by low background presence in air, low reactivity, high detectability and low toxicity. A design was proposed, called a permeation plug release vessel (PPRV), to convert PFTs from a liquid to a gas and then release the gaseous tracer in a controlled manner. The initial concept was originally introduced by Brookhaven National Laboratory and refined later to become the PPRV. The PPRV functions by allowing the volatile PFT liquid to become a vapor in a controlled manner. The vapor diffuses through a permeable silicone stopper at a predictable rate proportional to temperature (Zhang and Cloud, 2006)."

Over 80% of Australia's population lives within 200 km of the coast, 70% in 10 major coastal cities. Potential cement raw materials are widely distributed but deposit size, quality, transport, market and environmental considerations are important in determining economic value. Major production locations are in a variety of geological environments ranging from Lower Paleozoic crystalline limestones to Tertiary and Recent polyzoal limestones and limesands, both onshore and offshore. Raw material transportation is by road, rail, sea, aerial ropeway and pipeline; road/rail transportation of the finished product is traditional but movement by sea of clinker and cement is increasingly a feature of the industry.

The Deister No. 7, "77" and "88" Coal Washing Tables have been used by the coal industry in the cleaning of finer sizes of coal (-1/2") since washing of coals became necessary. This paper will deal with the in-plant use of the CONCENCO "88" Deister Coal Washing Table, along with a brief description of the Deister Refuse Superscalper. Efficient in-plant operation of the Deister Coal Washing Table can be accomplished by the adjustment of six basic variables. These variables are: 1. Headmotion 2. Feed 3. Riffle Pattern 4. Dressing Water 5. End Elevation Adjustment 6. Side Tilt Adjustment VARIABLE NO. 1 HEADMOTION The reciprocating movement of the "88" Table is developed within the headmotion entirely by rotating eccentric weights. Four parallel shafts each carry pairs of eccentric weights (Figure 1-A). The shafts are geared together with gears of 2 to 1 and 1 to 1 ratios, so that the two shafts in vertical alignment which carry the small eccentric weights operate at twice the speed of the other two shafts. The other two shafts are also in vertical alignment with each other and carry large eccentric weights. As power is supplied to one high-speed shaft, once each revolution the forces produced by the large eccentric weights are reinforced and then opposed by the small eccentric weights in a horizontal plane. The direction of movement of the table decks is reversed much more sharply at the forward end than at the backboard end of the stroke, causing material to move toward the refuse end of the table. Because in the vertical plane all centrifugal forces oppose each other and cancel out, there is no vertical movement and virtually no impact to the support steel. The "88" Coal Washing Table is suspended by wire-rope cables from three overhead steel beams, and operates with a perfectly uniform and exact differential motion curve in every stroke (Figure 1-B). The decks, being attached to the headmotion, are reciprocated in a parallel line from the head- motion to the refuse corner at speeds varying from 260-300 strokes per minute. Both length of stroke and speed are set at the factory for the coal characteristic desired and should not be changed. A 3 HP motor is mounted on the top of the headmotion and uses 3 V-belts to transmit driving power to the headmotion. The headmotion must be kept running on a horizontal plane. Punch marks are provided on the side and end of the main frame for use in leveling the motion (Figure 1-C). In leveling the motion, the work must always be done with two cables. To level the long side of the headmotion both front or both rear cables are raised or lowered to bring motion back to level. To level side to side, both right side cables or left side cables are raised or lowered to bring motion back to level VARlABLE NO. 2 FEED When tabling different size coals, each deck of a "88" DIAGONAL-DECK Coal Washing Table will handle feeds as described in figure 2-A.

Power cable costs are only a small part of total mining costs. So many mine operators consider power cable failure and resultant downtime as part of the cost of doing business. But, viewed in terms of lost production, these costs can be quite significant. Now one company, Cablec, seeks to cut cable costs by upgrading the polymer compounding process used to make cable insulating and semiconducting materials. Cablec is the leading manufacturer of electrical power cables in North America. And with about a third of the market, Cablec is the largest supplier of power cable to the mining industry in the United States. To improve its products, Cable has entered the polymer compounding business. In July, it began producing insulator and semiconductor polymer compounds at its plant in Indianapolis, IN. "This new facility provides a quantum leap over conventional compounding methods," said Harry C. Schell, Cablec's president and chief executive officer. "The Cablec polymers plant is producing a dramatically higher standard of polymer compounds that provide significantly higher levels of performance and improved life cycle costs for power cable." Cablec faces tough foreign competition in the wire and cable business. Competing on price alone is difficult, particularly when foreign producers are state subsidized. So Cablec feels the best way to compete is to establish new quality production standards. The company's new polymers plant is one way to do this. By increasing purity control and uniformity in polymer compounding, Cablec says its power cables will last longer and fail less often. A typical medium voltage cable consists of a conductor, conductor shield, insulation, insulation shield, metal shield, and jacket. The conductor shield and the insulation shield are conducting polymers. Contaminants and imperfections can occur within the insulation, at the conductor shield/insulation interface, or at the insulation shield/ insulation interface. Over time, these contaminants and imperfections can decrease the electrical strength of the cable or cause premature cable failure. The effort to minimize the number and size of any possible contaminants begins with pure polymer compounds mixed in a clean facility. However, most power cable manufacturers manually handle raw materials, use ethylene/propylene (EP) in bulk bales, and mix polymercompounds in open Banbury mixers. The quality and uniformity of polymer compounds is also impacted by temperature variations in the mixing process. This results in wide gradations of product consistency from batch to batch and ultimately contributes to power cable failure. Cablec says the improved polymer compounds from its state-of-the-art plant will be the purest and most consistent insulating and semiconducting materials available. The plant itself RCA spent $18 million to build Cablec's Indianapolis plant. RCA used the facility to mix specialty polymer compounds used to make video disks. RCA had two considerations in mind for the plant, cleanliness and uniformity of the compounds. However, when the video disk market failed to materialize, RCA sold the 46.5 dam 2 (50,000 sq ft) plant to Cablec for $3.1 million. Cablec invested an additional $3 million for modifications and increased production capabilities. Today's replacement cost for such a facility is estimated at $30 million. Cablec says the plant will set a new standard for performance and be economically difficult to duplicate anywhere. One of the essential elements of the plant's clean process environment is the air intake system. It filters contaminants greater than 2 um, less than one-fiftieth the current industry standard. All material handling and conveying areas in the facility are air-locked. This keeps out contaminants such as smoke, dust, and pollen. Banks of pneumatic pumps move polymer components through the system and continually filter the air. The plant also has a backup air intake system. No process downtime due to pump failure here. From the time raw material enters the plant, it is stored, transported, and processed in filtered air by an airtight stainless steel system. The stainless steel resists rust and corrosion. This further eliminates the danger of contamination from paint or rust particles in the conveyance network. "Slope failures that occurred in 2008 and 2009 at the Pikeview Quarry in El Paso County, Colorado, USA were investigated using three-dimensional discrete element modeling methods. Large scale block sliding failures occurred along weak bedding planes that dip steeply into an excavation located at the toe of the slope. Several mining sequences at the toe of the slope were simulated to evaluate the effects of various degrees of extraction and backfill on slope stability. Slope stability back analysis was conducted using pre-failure and post-failure conditions to determine the joint shear strength properties. Laboratory testing was also conducted to determine intact rock properties. Three-dimensional discrete element analysis was uniquely applicable to this evaluation because it allowed representation of shear stress of the basal sliding surface and it afforded evaluation of several scenarios of extraction and backfill at the toe of the slope. INTRODUCTION The Pikeview Quarry is an aggregate quarry located approximately five miles northwest of Colorado Springs in El Paso County, Colorado, USA. The quarry has been operated by several owners since the early 1900s. The Pikeview Quarry has been a major source of construction aggregate for the Colorado Springs area for many years (MSHA 1986). In the 1950s, the site was mined by Peter Kiewit and Sons to provide limestone for the construction of the nearby Air Force Academy. A large scale slope failure occurred on December 2, 2008, which stopped mining activity at the Pikeview Quarry. A second, related slope failure occurred on September 13, 2009. The second slope failure was located immediately adjacent to the initial December 2008 failure. The objective of this publication is to discuss the three-dimensional slope stability evaluation. The causal relationships of slope instability are not within the scope of this publication. However, omitting the precursors to slope failure would limit understanding of the nature of the slope stability evaluation. The regional and local geology and the history of slope instability at the Pikeview Quarry aid in understanding these precursors. Two main failure mechanisms were hypothesized during the failure investigation to explain the triggering of the 2008 and 2009 large slope failures at the Pikeview Quarry. Both mechanisms are given equal credence in this publication. Quarry excavation was a key factor in the slope instability for both failure mechanisms. The objective of the three-dimensional model was to evaluate the effects of extraction and backfill at the toe of the slope with respect to slope stability. GEOLOGY Regional and local geology are both important factors in slope instability at the Pikeview Quarry. Geologic structure at the quarry is related to regional mountain building and basin development associated with the Laramide Orogeny and the Rocky Mountains. Lithologies at the Pikeview Quarry are also related to regional trends. Localized geologic features, primarily related to weathering and erosion, have also been major contributing factors to slope instability at the Pikeview Quarry."

The first operation permitted under Michigan’s Part 632 Non-Ferrous Mineral Mining Law, it opened in 2014 and is expected to produce 163 kt (360 million lbs) of nickel, 134 kt (295 million lbs) of copper and small amounts of other metals over its estimated nine-year lifespan.The company extracts approximately 2 kt/d (2,200 stpd) from the underground nickelcopper mine using a bench-and-fill stoping process. Accessed from the surface by specialized underground trucks, the vehicles carry about 45,400-kg (100,000-lb) loads through a 1.6-km (1- mile) long and 5.4-m (18-ft) diameter ramp shaft descending into the earth at a 13 percent grade. Stoping is a bottom-up method that involves systematically blasting columns of loosened ore that is then mucked by front loaders into trucks and backfilled using cemented and uncemented rockfill."

The 1.8 mi (2.9 km) Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport Light Rail Transit Tunnels and Station project is comprised of the underground segments of the 11.8 mi(18.8 km) Hiawatha Light Rail Transit route in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The 21 ft 2 in(6.5 m) diameter twin tunnels were mined 65 ft beneath one of the busiest airports in the United States using an earth pressure balanced tunnel-boring machine. This paper will provide a project overview, review the major equipment selected, tunnel segment casting, and describe excavation and lining operations for the tunnels and station.

The recently completed In-Pit Crushing and Conveying Project at Phelps Dodge's Morenci Mine is rated among the world's leading materials handling projects. From a distance, the 0.75-km (0.5-mile) rail line that sits in the shadows of Vale-Inco?s Stobie Mine outside of Sudbury, Ontario could be mistaken for a standard conveyor belt hauling ore from the nearby mine. But with its large, yellow-painted loop and interconnected green rail cars that invert themselves on the loop before correcting with a smooth rollover further down the track, one might assume that this is some sort of test track for a new roller coaster. The fact of the matter is that it is the proving ground for Rail-Veyor technology, a technology that the company hopes will one day change the face of ore transportation in surface and underground mines around the world. With a line of linked, low-profile rail cars that are capable of carrying up to 1 t (1.1 st) per car of ore by way of simple, above ground, lightweight rail track, the technology is not groundbreaking. In fact, it was developed in the 1960s for the French State Railroad. A demonstration plant for the Florida Institute of Phosphate Research was installed in 2000 and the first commercial under-ground installation was in 2007 in South Africa at Harmony Gold?s Phakisa Mine. There, a 4.7-km- (2.9-mile-) long tram between two shafts operates three Rail-Veyor trains on a shared track. The difference is that the application that is being tested day-and-night in Sudbury is getting closer to wide production, thanks to the use of computer controlled automation that has helped turn an old idea into a cost-effective modern solution.

The Granduc ore body is located beneath glacial terrain on the borders of British Columbia and Alaska, some 600 miles from Vancouver and 30 miles from Tidewater at Stewart, B. C. The concentrator and attendant facilities are located in wilderness country at an elevation of 2500 feet. The average annual snowfall is 65 feet. Surface facilities and ore body are linked by a 10 mile railroad haulage tunnel. This copper property has been developed by Granduc Operating Company on behalf of Newmont Mining Corporation and American Smelting and Refining Co. First production started in November, 1970. In August, 1966, Granduc Operating Company awarded an engineering and construction management contract to McKee-Swan Wooster, a joint venture of A. G. McKee of Canada and Swan Wooster Engineering Company Limited, to design a concentrator to treat approximately 7000 tons of ore per day. The isolated location of the Granduc ore body indicated comparatively high freight rates on consumable items of concentrator supplies such as reagents, grinding media, etc. A firm flowsheet for the flotation of the Granduc ores having been developed by the Danbury laboratory of Newmont Exploration Limited, attention was devoted to means of reducing operating costs. One obvious method was to reduce or eliminate the costs of steel grinding media by employing some form of autogenous grinding. two pilot plant operations were carried out at the facilities of Lakefield Research of Canada Limited, in which autogenous grinding of Granduc ores was investigated. The Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA) operates the largest regional water authority in the State of Michigan. Two of the tunnels supplying raw water to the system from the Detroit River are the Springwells and Northeast Tunnels. The existing 70- to 90-year old concrete lined tunnels have experienced distress and cracking over their life requiring non-structural repairs to sections of the tunnels. For the repair, an interior stainless-steel segmental liner plate system has been designed to restore the watertight capacity of the tunnel liner and resist the exterior hydrostatic groundwater pressure in a dewatered condition. The team is utilizing a “wet repair” approach to perform the necessary repairs while the tunnel remains fully flooded and operational. To test and validate the tunnel repair approach, a full-scale mock-up of the proposed repair has been performed using underwater equipment and divers.

n the U.S., lead has been produced via blast furnace processing for over a century, and the slags from that pyro-metallurgical process have been accumulating on industrial sites over that extended period. Lead blast furnace slags typically contain both lead and zinc compounds in an iron-silicate matrix, and it appears highly likely that such materials will have to be processed in the near future to meet with EPA regulations. Thus it is appropriate to investigate possible processing routes to render the slags non-hazardous and simultaneously to recover metal values to partially off-set the inherent high cost of processing such materials. There are two major processing alternatives: one being pyrometallurgical and the other hydrometallurgical. The research reported here investigates leaching/solution purification/recovery processes for lead and presents experimental data for the treatment of lead blast furnace slags from S.E. Missouri. The results of the research suggest that both lead and zinc can be removed effectively from the slag, and that metallic lead can be recovered directly from the organic extractant utilized for solution purification.

The flocculation and dispersion behaviors of microsize wolframite and quartz are systematically studied in this paper. For synthetic mixtures, the floc separatory method on gravity units--electromagnetic vibration table (EVT) and lifting column (LC), have been approached. Satisfactory results can be obtained with a weak shearing. A better metallurgical performance can also be achieved for natural ore slimes through the combined technique. The efficiency is better than that of single gravity separation. Finally, the mechanism has been investigated.

The Companhia Vale do Rio Doce in Brazil operates one of the most extensive systems in the world for the mining, transportation, processing, pelletizing and shipping of high grade hematite iron ore and pellets. Current shipping of unbeneficiated, sized, high grade ore from its ports at Tubarão and Vitória is now at the rate of 17,500,000 metric tons annually. An increase in this annual rate is now under study. Using the technology and facilities of Lurgi (1) and Arthur G. McKee company CVRD undertook a program to process and pelletize two types of fines - "Blue Dust" and ?Itabira Fines?. Blue Dust is a high grade fine ore which was bypassed while mining the direct shipping ores and which, also, exists as a very large ore body called the Conceição Mine. Itabira Fines is a lower grade of fine ore which is comprised of in-situ fines and, also fines which are generated in sizing the direct shipping ores for a rigid specification market.

Operators of coal preparation plants use equipment such as large-capacity dump trucks and bulldozers to haul, spread and compact refuse material to conform to federal and state regulations governing the disposal of solid waste. For example, federal regulations require that refuse be spread and compacted in layers not more than two feet thick. If the refuse layers or piles have poor load-bearing characteristics, movement of equipment over them becomes extremely difficult. The increasing cost and limited space for the construction of settling ponds extensively used for fine refuse disposal are leading to the growing practice of dewatering the fine refuse by means of vacuum disc filters and combining the resulting filter cake with coarse refuse for waste bank disposal. However, this filter cake usually contains more than 25% moisture. Therefore, when it is combined with coarse refuse, the moisture level of the total refuse may become high enough to impair the load-bearing strength of the refuse. Precisely this problem and the attendant difficulties of moving heavy equipment arose when vacuum disc filters were installed at a preparation plant in West Virginia. Combining the moist filter cake with the coarse refuse generally results in a 12% moisture level for the total refuse at this plant. At this moisture level, the refuse can still be handled with some difficulty by the equipment. However, the problem has frequently been compouned after rains.

During 1963 more than 200 million tons of coal was consumed by the public utility industry. Ash residual, from the burning of this coal has caused disposal problems. In order to prevent air pollution, dust collection systems have been installed to suppress the fine ash emitted from boilers before it is discharged into the atmosphere. The collected ash, called fly ash, must be removed from the dust collection facilities and disposed in some manner, usually at a substantial cost to the utility. Many years ago fly ash disposal was not a serious problem because the demand for power was relatively low and coarse coal was burned on stoker type traveling grate machines. The low burning rates utilized on these grates did not produce large quantities of air-borne coal ash while the mechanics of this system of burning resulted in a clinkered residue of cinders. Both of these conditions resulted in the production of only small quantities of fly ash. As the demand for electricity increased, a method of burning pulverized coal was developed and was introduced to the public utility industry in 1918 at Milwaukee, Wisconsin.1 This method of firing was considered a significant advance in steam electric generation as it (1) permitted the use of coals that could not be economically fired by other methods and (2) has generally resulted in improved efficiency, greater generating capacity and lower costs.2 The utilization of larger generating units using pulverized coal substantially increased the quantity of fly ash which resulted in a' more severe disposal problem.
