The number of variables which can effect flotation of molybdenite is very large. This paper discusses the effect of two operating variables, namely, the degree of aeration and agitation, on the grade and recovery of molybdenite. A series of factorially designed flotation tests were carried out in a "Leeds Automatic Laboratory Flotation Cell." The analysis of flotation results indicate that molybdenite can be characterized into fast-floating and slow-floating components. The rates of fast-floating components, which do not create a problem in flotation, could be varied by changing agitation of airflow rates. However, the rate of slow-floating components was stable and was only a function of residence time in the float machine. The degree of aeration has a significant effect on the grade of MoS2 with only a slight effect on the recovery of MoS2. The degree of agitation has a slight effect on the grade, but does not effect the recovery of molybdenite. The implications of the results on the design of flotation cells and control and optimization of the existing circuits is subsequently discussed.

The recovery of iron from low-grade (31.6% Fe) Muro iron ore was investigated using reverse anionic flotation of quartz. Tests were performed to investigate the effect of pH, the effects of using distilled vs. tap water as the flotation medium and the effects of using cassava starch vs. dextrin for the depression of iron minerals. The optimum results were obtained around pH 10 and 11, and cassava starch was superior to dextrin in depressing iron oxides. Investigations at pH 11 using cassava starch and distilled water resulted in a concentrate grade of 69.4% Fe with a recovery of 84.4% Fe. Under the same conditions, the use o f dextrin produced a concentrate grade q f 65.9% Fe with a recovery of 78.6% Fe. Investigations at pH 10 using cassava starch and distilled water resulted in a concentrate grade of 60.2% Fe with a recovery of 83.9% Fe, and under these conditions the use of dextrin produced a concentrate grade of 56.1 % Fe with a recovery of 81.5% Fe. Flotation studies conducted at pH 11 using tap water and cassava starch resulted in a concentrate grade of 70.4% Fe with a recovery of 92.7% Fe. This demonstrated the superiority of tap water over distilled water in the reverse anionic flotation process. Investigating the effect of calcium ions on the activation and flotation of quartz with oleic acid revealed that a calcium ion concentration of 50 to 100 ppm was optimum.

Introduction A number of processes for deriving more convenient liquid and gaseous fuels from coal are commercially available or in final stages of development. Generally, synfuels from coal processes have efficiencies ranging from 50 to 70%. Considerable engineering design and development work are necessary to bring forth commercial plants using the various technologies-but technological breakthroughs are not expected or needed. Gasification While a variety of solids handling, gas contacting, and gas quality upgrading techniques may be employed in the various gasification processes, the primary goal is the same-to convert a sulfur-containing solid to an essentially sulfur-free gaseous product. The gaseous product may be a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide with nitrogen. Definitions are not rigorous, but high-Btu gas is generally over 900 Btu/scf(33 534 kJ/m3) and low-Btu gas is generally below 350 Btu/scf(13 041 kJ/m3). Medium or intermediate gas falls between these values. High-Btu production is more difficult, as it requires additional upgrading of a low- or intermediate-Btu gas stream to produce a commercially acceptable product. The carbon/ hydrogen ratio is adjusted either by rejecting a portion of the carbon, increasing the hydrogen, or a combination of both. The chemical processing steps include production processing gas containing carbon oxides and hydrogen by the reaction of carbon and steam (gasification); reaction of hydrogen and coal to form methane (a hydrogasification process); reaction of hydrogen and carbon monoxide to produce methane (methanation); and the removal of impurities. The gasification processes share a number of common techniques. The coal received at the plant site must be further cleaned and crushed or ground before it can enter the gasifier. Conventional cleaning methods are used to remove extraneous materials such as metal, rocks, etc. For some processes the coal must be finely ground so it may be fluidized or entrained in a flowing gas stream. For other processes crushing and sizing only are required. Agglomerating coals may be pretreated by heating, mild oxidation with air, or other procedures to assure smooth gasifier operation and to avoid reactor plugging. Nonagglomerating coals Such as lignite and subbituminous coal normally do not require pretreatment. Feeding a solid material such as coal to a higher pressure reactor is a difficult task. Dry feeders using a series of pressurized lock hoppers, or wet systems in which a slurry is pumped into the reactor, are used. The gasification step is the heart of the process. Here, the solid feed material is contacted with synthesis gas (carbon monoxide and hydrogen). The coal is devolatilized and a portion of the fixed carbon converted to methane. The gas-solids contacting methods used include fixed beds, fluidized beds, moving beds, entrained beds, and free-fall systems. The gasification process, overall, is endothermic and the heat required to maintain reaction rates is usually supplied by burning a portion of the coal feed. External heat sources such as electric resistance heating, molten salt or solid heat carriers, and the introduction of a hot hydrogen stream also have been tested. Following the gasification step the particulate materials and heavy hydrocarbons contained in the reactor effluent are removed by a water quench and solids separation system. If low-Btu gas or synthesis gas is the desired product, the raw gas is scrubbed to remove carbon dioxide and sulfur compounds and then is used directly. "Underground refuge alternatives require an air source to supply breathable air to the occupants. This requires pressure relief valves to prevent unsafe pressures from building up within the refuge alternative. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) mandates that pressure relief valves prevent pressure from exceeding 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi), or as specified by the manufacturer, above mine atmospheric pressure when a fan or compressor is used for the air supply. The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) tested a variety of pressure relief valves using an instrumented test fixture consisting of data acquisition equipment, a centrifugal blower, ductwork and various sensors to determine if the subject pressure relief valves meet the MSHA requirement. Relief pressures and flow characteristics, including opening pressure and flow rate, were measured for five different pressure relief valves under a variety of conditions. The subject pressure relief valves included two off-theshelf modified check valves, two check valves used in MSHA-approved built-in-place refuge alternatives, and a commercially available valve that was designed for a steel refuge alternative and is currently being used in some built-in-place refuge alternatives. The test results showed relief pressures ranging from 0.20 to 1.53 kPa (0.03 to 0.22 psi) and flow rates up to 19.3 m3/ min (683 scfm). As tested, some of the pressure relief valves did not meet the 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi) relief specification.IntroductionThe Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act) was enacted in the United States in the wake of three mine explosions/fires that claimed 19 lives that year. Intended to help improve underground coal mine accident preparedness, the MINER Act includes provisions that target mine safety issues in areas such as emergency response planning, adoption of new technology, training and education, and mine safety standards enforcement (U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration, MSHA, 2006). Section 13 of the MINER Act specifically directed the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to provide for research into the effectiveness and viability of refuge alternatives for underground coal mines. This mandate culminated in the 2009 adoption of changes to Title 30 of the Code of Federal Regulations (30 CFR) mining health and safety regulations, requiring underground coal mines to provide mine emergency refuge alternatives and associated components, to provide a life-sustaining environment for persons trapped underground. Such refuge alternatives can be either self-contained mobile units or built-inplace facilities. The regulatory changes also include provisions establishing requirements for MSHA approval of refuge alternatives and their components, and among these provisions are numerous criteria for providing a safe breathable atmosphere under positive pressure within the refuge alternatives. One specific criterion for maintaining a safe refuge alternative atmosphere requires the inclusion of an air pressure relief valve that will activate at a maximum of 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi), or at a pressure above mine atmospheric pressure, in the refuge alternative, as specified by the manufacturer when the breathable air is supplied by a fan or compressor (MSHA, 2008)."

INTRODUCTION The U. S. mining industry experienced a severe recession in the early 1980's. This resulted in the realization that the domestic mining industry had to compete on a global basis and only the strong or the low-cost producers would survive. The economic viability of a mining company not only depended on maximizing mineral recovery but also on its ability to do so at minimum cost. Companies had to become more productive not only by cutting costs, but also by developing and/or evaluating new technologies in existing or new plants. Several innovative concepts, including in-pit crushing and conveying, fine crushing, improved classification equipment, flotation, column flotation, pressure filtration, etc., have been developed in recent years. This paper addresses the impact of new flotation concepts and equipment on mill design. MILL DESIGN PHILOSOPHY Modern mill design, especially for large capacity plants, has its foundation in minimizing capital and operating costs. Capital costs can be minimized by minimizing the various components of the capital cost: infrastructure, equipment, instrumentation, structural, initial spare parts costs, etc. All these costs are minimized by simplifying the mill design and/or process flowsheet. The simplified process flowsheet, where applicable, consists of a single stage primary crusher followed by a semiautogeneous - ball mill grinding circuit to produce feed for a flotation circuit. Multiple flotation circuits have been eliminated in most cases. These concepts minimize the cost and encourage the use of large capacity equipment while maintaining optimum metallurgical recovery. The philosophy of mill modernization/modification is generally driven by the desire to increase the mill capacity within the limits of the existing mill building. This need is facilitated by using large size flotation equipment and eliminating multiple parallel flotation circuits in order to minimize capital and operating costs. Conventional flotation machine development has paralleled this mill design philosophy. FLOTATION CELL DESIGN Since froth flotation has been the most widely used separation process for over half a century, one would expect that it would be possible to design and select flotation machines for specific applications based on scientific principles. But this has not been the case. Best judgment, experience and personal prejudice have played a key role in equipment selection. These factors, along with the difficulty of evaluating new concepts in commercial plants, has slowed progress in implementation and commercialization of innovative ideas and/or equipment. Conventional Flotation There have been no major technological advances in conventional flotation cell design in recent years. A recent flotation cell survey indicates that 'larger flotation cells are still the order of the day.”(1) A comprehensive review of design of flotation machines indicate that they have been mechanically redesigned and are generally simpler and easier to maintain and less expensive to manufacture. (2,3) The approximate chronological development of conventional cells from the 25 cubic foot cells to the 3000 cubic foot cells, which were recently installed at the Copperton concentrator of Utah Copper, is given in Table 1. Larger flotation cells are the obvious choice for new plants or plants looking for expansion because of the following reasons: • They have lower capital cost per unit volume • Installation costs are generally lower because fewer units require less space • Maintenance costs are lower because of fewer mechanisms • Power requirements (HP/ton dry feed) are generally lower • with increased flotation cell size as illustrated in Table 2 [Table 1. "Salicyl hydroxamic acid (SHA) adsorption on two rare earth oxides, lanthanum and yttrium, was studied. Adsorption at both surfaces occurred in two stages. Initially, the monovalent anionic collector appears to adsorb significantly and instantaneously in stage one and then becomes sluggish in stage two presumably because the initial stage passivated the surface. By comparison, adsorption during the sluggish second stage with lanthanum oxide did not stop but with yttrium oxide essentially stopped. Surface monolayer formation could not be observed in either of the two cases. Both stages appear to be due to multilayer formation of a surface precipitate as proven by Raman Spectroscopy for lanthanum oxide but inferred for yttrium oxide. Unlike the use of octyl hydroxamate as stated in the literature, increasing temperatures do not increase adsorption such that flotation of rare earths with SHA may be performed at room temperature leading to improved recoveries as well as significant energy savings. INTRODUCTION Rare Earth Elements (REEs) are comprised of the 15 lanthanides along with scandium and yttrium. The REEs with lower atomic numbers are relatively more abundant and are categorized as light REEs. On the contrary, the REEs with high atomic numbers are less abundant and referred to as heavy REEs. They are not really “rare” and, in fact, some of them are quite abundant in the Earth’s crust; it’s just that they “rarely” exist in concentrated deposits but rather are found dilute and practically everywhere. REEs share very similar physico-chemical properties but, because many of these properties are unique, they have gained enormous importance in recent times making several critical and strategic pending their use. For example, REEs have found extensive application in phosphor coatings, magnetics, and automobile cracking catalysts. Early technology was not advanced enough to produce commodity level production of the REEs and can be attributed to REE-bearing ores containing many rare earth minerals (REMs), not just one. In this regard, there are numerous REMs but bastnaesite, xenotime and monazite are considered to be the most common. Bastnaesite is a fluorocarbonate whereas the other two are phosphates. The separation of the individual REE-bearing minerals from the ores is not an easy task since they also exhibit very similar properties. Consequently, when flotation is used, it is done to produce bulk REM concentrates. For REM flotation, it is well established that octyl hydroxamate is more selective than fatty acid collectors (Pradip and Fuerstenau, 1983 and 1991). Liu et al. (2006) indicated that hydroxamates are the most common collectors for REMs. Pavez et al. (1996) studied the adsorption of oleic fatty acid and octyl hydroxamate on REM surfaces. Cui et al. (2012) studied the interaction of octyl hydroxamate with various REMs surfaces using various spectroscopic techniques such as XPS, FT-IR and Raman along with electron microscopy and concluded that such techniques offer ample information to establish adsorption mechanisms. Ren et al. (1997) studied napthalenic hydroxamic acid as a unique collector for flotation of REMs from bastnaesite ore and indicated that more selective collectors were needed. From these studies, it is clear that the quest of more selective collectors is essential but understanding how they adsorb at mineral surfaces is prerequisite to improving flotation performance."

"Coal bearing rocks are low in strength and have geological discontinuities and moisture sensitivity. Roof and rib falls have been a major cause of fatalities in underground coal mines. Mine engineers design ground control plans for regulatory approvals. A number of tools are available from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health to design and assess these plans. Quite often there is not enough geotechnical input information available and databases are used. The Appalachian coalfields have extensive scientific studies to provide reliable regional inputs. Coal mines in the western United States and Canada have different geological and geotechnical conditions, and less available data. Use of inappropriate inputs in the tools like Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability, Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability, and Analysis of Roof Bolt Systems may result in unsafe designs or over conservative designs. The tools are convenient but thorough understanding of the inputs, calibration with local test results, and operating experience are important for effective designs. The current paper contains examples of difficulties faced during mine planning using the above tools. INTRODUCTION Sedimentary rocks hosting coal are low in strength. Scientific studies have placed the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), triaxial strength, tensile strength, and shear strength of sandstone, shale, siltstone, and claystone in lower range of strength among engineering materials (1). Coal bearing rocks are most often weakened by the presence of faults, folds, slickensides, bedding planes, fractures, and other geological discontinuities. The host rocks and coal are often moisture sensitive. The geological discontinuities allow water to enter the strata from surface and underground sources. This combination of low strength, structural weakness, and presence of water results in difficult ground control situations for the coal mines. Roof (2) and rib falls have been a major cause of fatalities in the U.S. coal mines. Modern underground coal mines necessitate wide entries to accommodate large production equipment. The gate roads, section entries, and the mains entries of a highly productive coal mine are as wide as twenty feet (6.1 m). The actual intersection width is nearly thirty feet (9.1 m). Adequate ground control is a key to maintain safe production in such mines. Mine engineers and their consultants routinely submit ground control plans to the regulatory authorities. While working out the necessary roof control system the mine engineers are required to demonstrate the adequacy of the proposed system. There are multiple ways to demonstrate this. Some engineers use traditional load calculation approach of roof bolts (3). Some engineers use numerical methods. Yet a large number of professionals resort to a suite of ground control design software offered by National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) commonly referred to as “NIOSH Ground Control Toolbar.” These software tools are free and easy to download from NIOSH website. The software included in this package are: Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability (ALPS), Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS), Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR), Analysis of Roof Bolt Systems (ARBS), Analysis of Horizontal Stress Effects in Mining (AHSM), Analysis of Multiple Seam Stability (AMSS), Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability - Highwall Mining (ARMPS-HWM). These tools are relatively simple to install and use in planning and designing coal mines and prospective coal mines. They accept a number of geotechnical inputs which are collected from either an existing mining operation or from exploratory boreholes. In the absence of necessary input parameters, the programs use default values which are drawn from databases of geotechnical properties built by NIOSH."

Computer simulation of mine ventilation systems is rapidly becoming an essential tool in mine planning and design. This paper examines the utilization of ventilation simulation techniques to evaluate the number, shape, size and layout of mine entries in a typical coal mining system. Since the mains and sub-mains serve mainly for transportation and ventilation and the ventilation system is critically important to the health and safety of the workers, there exists a great need for optimal designs in this area. Evaluation criteria, could include, among others, minimization of power costs, shaft requirements and leakage. Constraints of this optimization problem include health and safety regulations and production and mine infrastructure requirements.

Production at Freeport Indonesia's Ertsberg open pit copper/gold mine started in 1972 at a rate of 7500 t/d. Mill throughput remained at that rate for a number of years until the discovery of the Ertsberg East (GBT) orebody. This discovery prompted three successive expansion stages from 1981 to 1988 that boosted production to 20,000 t/d. The discovery of the huge Grasberg porphyry copper deposit in 1988 launched a new era of much larger expansions. The first of these involved installation of a fourth primary mill in 1989 to bring production up to 32,000 t/d and was immediately followed by an expansion of the crushing and screening plant and the addition of a new south concentrator to bring production to 57,000 t/d in 1991. The addition of a primary ball mill and the changeout of the original Denver flotation cells in 1993 has served to optimize current production at a level of 66,000 t/d. A major expansion is now in progress. This includes construction of another new concentrator to house a SAG mill circuit and large Wemco flotation cells in an area created by the removal of 6,000,000t of glacial material. This current expansion, with a planned completion in 1995, will take production to 115,000 t/d. This paper describes the evolution of the Freeport Indonesia (FI) concentrator to-date and will then go into an in-depth discussion of the 66,000 and 115,000 t/d expansions.

The phosphate formations of the Pliocene epoch were deposited along the coastal shelf of the eastern seaboard. The deposition of the phosphate is thought to be somewhat contiguous along the early shoreline, and the deposit can be more or less traced over an 800 to 930 mile path from the Florida Gulf Coast, near Ft. Myers, to the Pamlico Sound of North Carolina. This is illustrated in Figure 1. Three areas of commercial importance are currently being exploited from this extensive known deposit: 1 - The so-called ?Bone valley? in Central Florida (multiple operations) 2 - Hamilton County in North Florida (Occidental Corporation operation) 3 - Beaufort County in North Carolina (Texas Gulf Sulphur operation)

The San Miguel Mine is owned by San Miguel Electrical Cooperative, Inc. and operated by Atascosa Mining Company, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Morrison-Knudsen Company, Inc. This multiseam, single-zone lignite surface mine is located near Jourdanton, Texas, 110 kilometers (68 miles) south of San Antonio. Lignite extracted from four closely-spaced seams is used to fuel the 400-MW San Miguel Power Plant. Recovery depths range from 7 to 37 meters (25 to 120 feet). The mine began stripping operations in the spring of 1980 and now produces approximately 2.5 million tonnes (2.8 million tons) of lignite annually. Atascosa Mining Company is responsible for production, maintenance, engineering, and management services. Production responsibilities include topsoil removal, overburden removal, lignite mining, spoil pile regrading and topsoil replacement, as well as ash disposal and construction and maintenance of water retention and diversion facilities.

Hydrogeological techniques were used to solve problems of slope stability in open-pit mines of the Eufaula bauxite district, Alabama. Geologic and hydrologic data were evaluated and used to design a system of dewatering wells to enable the operators to mine bauxite more efficiently and economically. Walls of open-pit mines in the district were subsequently stabilized by the operation of the dewatering system. Three open-pit mines, each at varying stages of the mining process, of the A. P. Green Refractories Company, were used to develop a sequential series of guidelines that indicate how to effectively remove ground water from the formations surrounding the ore bodies in the district. The use of sound engineering principles in well design, in combination with the correct interpretation of the pit hydrology provided the basis for solutions of the slope- stabilization problem aided in the economical removal of bauxite from mines of the district.

Starting with rutile, containing more than 55% TiO2 and of the proper particle size, the commercial production of titanium tetrachloride via fluidized bed chlorination is relatively very simple and economical. As compared to shaft chlorination, it operates at a much higher capacity for given sizing of equipment, and appears more foolproof, requiring less attention. Operating data were obtained on a 53" diameter fluidized bed chlorinator using Australian rutile and petroleum coke of controlled particle size. Production rates varied from 20 to 50 tons of crude TIC14 per day for a campaign extending over one month. Close to theoretical yields and efficiencies were obtained from the viewpoint of chlorine and/or rutile consumption. Details of important equipment design, critical operating conditions and pertinent results are described.

Ore and waste haulage usually constitute one of the major cost items in the operation of an open pit mine. This has always been true at the Chino mine, one of Kennecott Copper Corporation's western mines, located in southwestern New Mexico. The Chino Mines Division is an integrated operation. The open pit mine, dump leaching operation, and a precipitating plant are located at Santa Rita, New Mexico, and a power plant, mill, smelter, and fire refinery are located in Hurley, New Mexico, about nine miles south of the mine. Approximately 22,000 tons of ore are mined and processed each day; in addition, approximately 42,000 tons of waste are removed from the pit. Originally the pit was located along the side of Santa Rita Creek but it has deepened and expanded so that at the present time, it could better be described as a nearly circular pit about one to 1.5 miles in diameter. The bottom is at an elevation of 5750 feet, the west rim near the ore gathering yard is at an elevation of 6230 feet, and the highest bench on the east side of the pit is at an elevation of 6750 feet, giving a vertical mining depth of 1000 feet. The train waste dumps reach a maximum elevation of 6580 feet. At the present time, Chino uses electric locomotives, off-the- highway trucks, and a skip system for mine haulage.

Since World War II, the need for the use of explosives in construction, mining, and quarrying near congested urban areas has increased dramatically. Often times a coal mine, once isolated from a city, finds itself surrounded by residential and commercial structures. The United States Bureau of Mines and others have researched blast design to a point where ground vibration and airblast damage can be avoided. A problem still exists, however. It is the fact that people often react to only the loud noise associated with a blast although it may not cause damage. Most often it is the concussion of a blast, less than 20 hertz and inaudible, that produces damage. Public fear from the "startle" and "fright" of loud blast noise greater than 20 hertz leads to the complaints which are generally unfounded. See Thackray, Touchstone, and Baily (1975) for a further discussion of the startle effects of loud sudden noises. When blasts are designed in accordance with U.S.B.M. specifications, management generally has little to worry about with respect to damage claims. Complaints, however, still arise when the noise is accentuated from the blast. It is meteorological conditions which dictate how the sound levels will propagate. Some mines use small pilot test shots (generally one-two lbs) to determine when atmospheric conditions favor sound travel.

"Gold, silver and copper form various complexes with cyanide, of which only the singly charged dicyano form adsorbs appreciably on activated carbon. The adsorption of the dicyano complexes appears to be controlled predominantly by chemical reaction at the surface of a shrinking unreacted core. Metal uptake over time is non-linear, which eliminates control by boundary layer diffusion. The rate of adsorption is not enhanced by a reaction interruption, which suggests the absence of concentration gradients in the pores. Finally, the rate of adsorption increases with decreasing activated carbon size in a manner consistent with the shrinking core model. The results of this investigation accentuate the importance of efficient acid washing of carbon and removing carbon fines from the barren carbon stream. INTRODUCTION With the dwindling reserves of high-grade ores, most of the world’s gold is produced from low-grade ores by cyanide leaching. In the past, leaching was followed by the Merrill-Crowe process, in which gold is precipitated from clarified pregnant solutions by zinc cementation. This process is still being used for high-silver ores, where the cost of carbon stripping becomes prohibitive. For deposits with silver-to-gold ratios of about 4 or less, adsorption on activated carbon would be the usual solution purification step taken. The process simplifies solid-liquid separation and offers a viable solution to preg-robbing organic carbon in some ores. The modern industrial application of carbon adsorption started with the carbon-in-pulp (CIP) process, where carbon adsorption was used mainly as a solution purification step. In 1973, Homestake Mining Company commissioned the first large-scale CIP plant in the U.S.A.1 Later, carbon was added earlier in the circuit to control preg-robbing by adsorbing gold cyanide onto activated carbon as soon as it is dissolved. The scheme is successful because activated carbon is a stronger adsorber than the organic carbon found in preg-robbing ores. This process came to be known as the carbon-in-leach (CIL) process. Numerous research investigations have been performed on the chemistry involved in the CIP process, which at the time of its introduction was not clearly understood. Of these, research on the kinetics of adsorption probably bears the most immediate impact on industrial practice,2,3 where adsorption systems rarely reach equilibrium, if at all, and slight slowdowns in the adsorption rate can translate into significant decreases in revenue. To illustrate this, organic compounds, like flotation reagents, have been known to impair CIP circuits. However, laboratory tests showed that the organic compounds do not significantly affect the adsorption capacity of activated carbon. Rather, the harmful effect may be attributed to a lowered adsorption rate.4,5 Also well known is the faster rate at which fine activated carbon powders reach equilibrium compared to coarse activated carbon, even though the final (equilibrium) amount of material adsorbed per unit weight is the same."

A booster fan is an underground ventilation device installed in the main airstream to handle the total quantity of air circulated to one or more working districts. It is installed in a permanent stopping and equipped with airlock doors, a monitoring system and interlocking devices between the main fan and the booster fan. When adequately installed, a booster fan can be used to reduce the main fan pressure, reduce leakage and decrease the power consumption. However, an inadequate installation can increase the likelihood of mine fies and recirculation of air contaminants. This study identifies hazards associated with the operation and maintenance of booster fans. It analyzes the accompanying risks and recommends control measures to reduce those risks to acceptable levels. The ventilation network of an existing coal mine was updated to include a booster fan. The hazards associated with the operation of this fan were identified, the risks analyzed and the esponse to each failure mode established.
