Many disputes related to environmental issues in mining are resolved through often-antagonistic negotiations in a regulatory context or through litigation. These approaches are certainly the best choices for resolving certain disputes. However, just as no single remediation technology is the right fit for every site, so no single dispute resolution process is the best choice for every situation. This paper introduces a range of dispute resolution alternatives (from collaborative decision making through mediation, arbitration, and litigation). Especially when money is tightest, cost-effective dispute resolution(and the outcomes that can accompany it) can have an impact on the bottom line.

One of the few innovations in hydrometallurgy in recent years has been the utilization of the chemistry of basic iron sulfates called jarosites. These have been used to make iron-zinc separations in the processing of zinc concentrates and are a very important factor in both the Duval and Cymet copper chloride processes as a means of preventing iron build-up in the closed leaching circuits. Copper oxychlorides are kindred compounds in that they are insoluble basic salts that form at low pH (1.5 to 3) and precipitate selectively from many base metal solutions. They have been reported in the chemical literature as far back as 1860, and a few of them are known in their mineralogical forms (particularly atacamite) usually as nuisance minerals because of their chloride content. Several patents describe their synthesis and use as fungicides and insecticides, and papers have discussed their formation as corrosion pro¬ducts on copper and brass piping (14).

The U.S. Bureau of nines evaluated the potential availability of tungsten from 57 tungsten mines and deposits in 19 market economy countries (1). The 38 properties that were producing at the time this study was performed contain approximately 375,000 tons1 of W03 (tungsten trioxide). The total estimated recoverable resource from all properties studied, both producers and nonproducers, was 1.2 million tons W03 (demonstrated level). Approximately 143,000 tons of W03 is recoverable from producing properties with costs at or below the January 1983 market prices. The study indicates that by 1990 production from currently operating mines in market economy countries will decrease as their demonstrated resources become exhausted. Some of this potential decline may be offset by lower than anticipated levels of market demand, discoveries of additional resources at producing mines, development of other known deposits, and/or discoveries of new deposits. Development of new tungsten resources in market economy countries will likely result in costs higher than exist at currently producing properties. The People's Republic of China has been steadily increasing production and export of tungsten in various form and currently supplies about 25 pct of U.S. imports. China's tungsten mines are large, high-grade operations capable of producing at relatively low cost. These factors, coupled with China's apparent need for foreign exchange, could lead to further expansions of production and exports from China, with a consequent increased dependence by market economy countries on China for tungsten requirements and a threat to the survival of the market economy countries' tungsten industries.

"Bastnaesite is one of the important mineral resources for the production of rare earth materials, and it is typically associated with calcite and quartz as gangue minerals. Fatty acid or hydroxamic acid are recommended collectors for bastnaesite flotation. In this research, potassium lauryl phosphate was expected to provide a stronger flotation response for bastnaesite than for the calcite and quartz gangue minerals. Using potassium lauryl phosphate as collector, the results of captive bubble contact angle measurements, zeta potential determinations and microflotation experiments for bastnaesite, calcite and quartz are reported. Greater selectivity for bastnaesite was achieved using potassium lauryl phosphate than using octyl hydroxamate as collector. These results indicate that potassium lauryl phosphate might be a promising collector in the flotation of bastnaesite ores. The computation results of universal force field (UFF) interaction energies for the mineral-reagent interactions are also reported and were found to correlate well with the experimental microflotation results.IntroductionBastnaesite ((Ce,La)FCO3) belongs to the mineral class of semisoluble salt minerals, whose characteristics include ionic bonding and limited solubility in water. Bastnaesite, for the most part, contains the cerium subgroup or the lighter rare earth elements (Zhou et al., 2014). The Mountain Pass deposit in California in the United States and the Bayan Obo deposit in Mongolia in China are the two major deposits of bastnaesite (Azizi et al., 2016; Satur et al., 2016). Calcite and/ or quartz are common gangue minerals in these and many other rare earth deposits (Jordens et al., 2014)"

Although fluorspar is considered an industrial mineral by usage and value, its geological occurrence and the mining and milling methods employed make it more akin to the non-ferrous metal ores. Likewise methods of exploration for it are more like those used in the search for lead and zinc, with which fluorspar is often mixed. In fact, it often takes the mixture of fluorspar, lead, zinc, plus maybe barite to add up to enough recoverable values to make the mineral an ore by definition. This is so true where the fluorspar portion is low grade, perhaps less than 25 percent. Until the development of modern steel milling in World War I times, the invention of aluminum smelting, and development of the fluorine chemical industry and air conditioning, there were few uses for fluorspar aside from ceramic fluxes in the flint glass industry and for uses as glazes for pottery and china. Pure fluorite crystals have long been admired as semi-precious and ornamental minerals of many delicate colors.

Air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASH) flotation is one of the new promising technologies. Numerous applications have been successfully tested since its conception; nevertheless, research and development efforts have continued to provide for further improvements with respect to operating conditions and design considerations. Results from experimental studies on bubbles generation in the ASH system are presented in this paper. Bubble size distributions generated during ASH operation have been determined using a high-speed photographic technique. The influence of many factors including surfactant concentration, water flowrate, and porous tube pore size has been studied. Test results indicate that these process variables have a profound effect on the bubble size distribution. With an increase in surfactant concentration or water flowrate (shear field) the bubble size distributions become narrower and shift toward smaller average bubble diameters. However, the influence of pore size is more complicated. Depending on the experimental conditions the average bubble size was found to range from about 100 to 300 microns in diameter.

The agriculture industry has made great strides during the past decade to increase agriculture yields through increased use of fertilizers. Increased use of fertilizers may prevent or at least delay mass starvation due to the alarming increase in world population. Phosphate was added to soil as a plant nutrient in the forms of calcined bones at least 2 000 years ago, (1) and man has used phosphate minerals as a source of fertilizers in one form or another for at least 100 years. During 1977 the world produced about 116 million metric tons of phosphate rock, with about 86% used for fertilizers and another 4% for animal feed supplements. More than three-fourths of the total production comes from the United States, Morocco, and the Soviet Union. From a mineral beneficiation point of view, the major sources of phosphate rock and the methods of beneficiation can be classified as follows. Marine deposits not containing appreciable carbonate minerals, marine deposits requiring a francolite carbonate mineral separation, igneous deposits not containing appreciable carbonate minerals, and igneous deposits, requiring an apatite carbonate mineral separation.

Talc orebodies are mined in Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America. Operators in North America must be efficient quality suppliers to thrive in a talc market in which many overseas suppliers have advantages such as lower hourly wages, shorter distances to ports, and less government regulation and intervention. Continuous improvement through teamwork and innovation is needed in the following areas to thrive amidst worldwide competition: 1) Maximization of the in-place value of ore. 2) Research and development to yield new processes and products. 3) Safe productivity. 4) Involvement in legislative processes. 5) Wellness programs to lower health care costs.

The abstract discusses the synthesis and investigation of polyacrylamide functionalized chitosan polymers (CS-PAMs) as selective depressants for pyrite in the flotation of galena and chalcopyrite from complex sulfide ore. The study employed response surface methodology (RSM) to model and optimize the flotation process, varying parameters like the degree of deacetylation of chitosan, weight ratio of chitosan to acrylamide, and CS-PAM dosage. The developed RSM models effectively predicted iron and lead grades and recoveries, while optimization showed optimal pyrite separation from galena and chalcopyrite using CS-PAM synthesized from chitosan with a high degree of deacetylation and a specific chitosan:acrylamide weight ratio.

Underground stone mine ventilation is characterized by large openings with low resistances. These mines primarily face three challenges: moving adequate volumes of air, controlling and directing the airflow, and planning ventilation systems that work well with production requirements. Given these challenges, this paper examines the data collected by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) to determine the extent to which respirable crystalline silica (RCS) and diesel particulate matter (DPM) are an issue in underground stone mines. Out of 522 sampled mines, there were 108 personal samples exceeding the RCS Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) during 2000–2020. DPM were more prevalent than RCS in these mines with 382 personal samples exceeding the DPM PEL out of the 929 mines sampled during 2002–2020. Dilution of DPM is usually the defining parameter for design of mine ventilation systems in largeopening underground stone mines. With this knowledge, focused attention can be directed to these mines so that appropriate prevention and mitigation techniques can be utilized to prevent stone miners’ exposure to RCS and DPM and subsequent respiratory diseases.

This paper describes an experimental setup for multiple fan ventilation systems at the ventilation laboratory of the West Virginia University Department of Mining Engineering. Housed in a 30-ft x 70 -ft room, the experimental setup consists of three 18-in., variable-speed, axial flow fans; an 18-in. -diam, fiberglass tubing; associated fittings for arranging networks; and a picot-tube measuring and data-acquisition system. The fiberglass tubing and fans can be organized into non-planar networks of two or three fans. The setup is mainly designed for studying the characteristic curves, operating points and fan stall for multiple fan ventilation systems.

This paper presents the ventilation design for an underground testing facility in a salt medium. The underground workings consist of two-12 ft. (3.66 m) diameter watertight shafts and approximately 6000 ft. (1830 m) plus of drifting. These facilities are designed for the purpose of providing access for an in-situ testing of a salt horizon in which a variety of hazardous and non-hazardous materials could be temporarily stored or permanently deposited. The ventilation system includes a design basis for gassy mine conditions and provides for the option of bulk air cooling and heating.

The main purpose of this study was to design a modular/mobile coal preparation plant with a capacity of 300 t/h for Seyitömer B3 vein (almost 70% of the whole SLI deposit). Firstly, coal washing properties and washability curves were determined by sink and float tests. Then, equipment sizing, selection, flow sheet development, economic evaluation, investment and operating costs were determined for coarse (-150+18mm), fine (-18+0.5mm) and slime (-0.5+0.1mm) coals. Economic evaluation of the proposed flow sheet showed the feasibility and profitability of the investment.

The demand or consumption of fluorspar has been somewhat taken for granted in recent years, except for the specific interest of those that produce, market, and/or consume the commodity. A tradition was established of thinking that as the steel and aluminum industry goes, so goes fluorspar. This is much less true today than in the past. The industry is becoming more dependent on chemical industries that feed primarily off hydrofluoric acid (HF) production. The Bureau of Mines recently published an assessment of world fluorspar reserves and resources that created a foundation of valuable data that can be used to monitor fluorspar availability. Celebrations were held this year commemorating the 100th anniversary of the isolation of fluorine. The United States and other countries continue to struggle with the controversy of ozone depletion and the effect of fluorocarbons on the atmosphere. The goals for the U.S. Government's strategic stockpile are being reevaluated. The market for fluorine chemicals is changing and diversifying, making it a challenge to assess and forecast fluorspar/fluorine demand. This paper reviews the recent past of fluorspar and helps set the stage for a more detailed assessment of this critical commodity.

Limestone-based material appears to be an effective arsenic removal process that has great potential for source reduction in drinking water. Limestone-based material offers several benefits to the drinking water community: 1) reasonable removal efficiency as compared to material cost, 2) broad geographic and water system applicability, 3) compatibility with other water treatment processes, 4) ease of technical use, and 5) low-cost disposal in ordinary landfills. Batch and column experiments have evaluated the removal efficiency of several limestone types. Additives and material alteration have increased the removal efficiency. Granulation of powdered limestone as a filter media currently is being investigated.

The STG integrated method of grouting can be divided into the several phases as outlined in preceding chapters. For convenience in describing technical procedures, they can be grouped as: 1. Investigations in non-geotechnical, exploration bore¬holes. 2. Drilling the holes necessary for geotechnical investiga¬tions and for grouting. 3. Conducting appropriate hydrogeologic tests in those holes and consequent calculations. 4. The preparation of a clay mortar. 5. The preparation of a clay-cement grout with additives. 6. The injection of the grout. 7. Checking the quality of the grout curtain. Items 2, 4, 5 and 6 are discussed below. These activities contain the procedural aspects of grouting. 7.1 DRILLING GROUT HOLES Grout holes belong to a very select class of drillholes. The necessary drilling equipment must enable the operator to drill the holes in inclined, twisting directions. In addi¬tion, the equipment must permit drilling under structurally and hydrogeologically complex conditions. The equipment must permit the operator to conduct specific testing activi¬ties in the drillholes. These activities include hydrodynamic analyses, flowmetric analysis, and the installation and re¬moval of deflectors, packers, grouting plugs, casings, lin¬ers, pumping facilities and other work. As explained in Chapters 5 and 6, the grouting of sat¬urated rock is conducted both through holes drilled from the surface and through holes drilled from the face of a shaft, drift, or tunnel. The drilling of grout holes from the surface can be carried out by an aggregate of equipment that can be the same equipment used for drilling exploration boreholes. Depending on the projected depth of the holes, the STG ZIF- 1200MR and ZIF-650 drilling rigs (or modifications of them) are used. The SKB-4, SKB-5 and SKB-7 high-output drilling rigs (workover rigs) have been used in recent years. The STG BMP-24 drilling rigs are used for carrying out the descent-lifting operations for drilling holes from the sur¬face. In a number of cases, the UKB-500C, URB-3AM and URB-2A power-fed drilling equipment is used for drilling holes from the surface. It should be noted that the drilling of grout holes usually requires an electric drive assembly. Drilling with diesel drive assemblies would be used only to preclude the possi¬bility of losing electric power during drilling operations. Turbine drilling would be used only for appropriate techni¬cal-economic reasons. The selection of the grout hole design is determined by the hydrogeological and structural geological conditions at the site as interpreted in Chapters 2 and 3. The design of grout holes must be as simple as possible in order to min¬imize costs. Hole design guidelines can be adopted as a basis for this purpose, unless site-specific conditions require otherwise. The mouth of the drillhole must be outfitted with a guide-pipe having a length of at least 2 m and an outside diameter from 219 to 234 mm. The upper part of the hole must be attached by a jig consisting of borehole casing that has a diameter ranging from 108 to 146 mm. The length of the jig h is determined by the equation [ ] where k = 1.1 to 1.2 is the load factor; P,, is the injection pressure of the grout into the mouth of the drillhole; D is the external diameter of the jig pipe; m = 0.6 to 0.7 is the work condition factor; T[ ].1 MPa is the bonding value of the rock cemented to the jig. The grout hole is drilled from the jig shoe to the de¬signed depth using a rock-crushing bit with a diameter of 93 mm or more. However in complex hydrogeological condi¬tions when the shaft intersects unstable rock, other hole designs can be used. The diameter of grout holes must permit an aggregate of investigations to be conducted in them using down-hole borehole geophysical and flowmetric logging instruments. It is necessary to cement the casing strings reliably in the grout holes, thereby permitting the injection of the grout under high pressure through the pres¬sure tight mouth of the borehole. Technological details for drilling grout holes such as the rotational rate of the drill bit, the axial load on the rock¬crushing bit, and the drilling fluid flow rate are optimized for the specific rock-hydrogeological conditions largely by experience. The hole diameter and type of rock crushing bit are important variables in these details of drilling. It is advisable to drill holes using water as the drilling fluid. However in those cases where the hole walls are unstable or under very high ground water pressure, the use of a well¬ engineered drilling mud should not be precluded. Unfortu¬nately, drilling mud can influence test results. When steeply dipping fractures with inclination angles of more than 60 to 70° are encountered, it is necessary to drill guided, inclined grout holes. Three major suites of igneous rocks were erupted in the Great Basin in middle and late Cenozoic time. The first, most likely, resulted from sub- duction of a Pacific plate (Farallon plate) beneath the North American plate, resulting in eruption of andesitic rocks in the northern Great Basin between 42 and 43 m.y. ago. Between 34 and 17 m.y. ago, igneous activity migrated to the southwest, largely as eruption of volumincus rhyolite-quartz latite ash-flow sheets, ending about 17 a.y. ago with the onset of crustal extension and north-south-trending Basin and Range (rift) faulting. The second volcanic suite erupted between 17 and 8 m.y. ago in the northern Great Basin; is mostly basaltic or bimodal basalt-rhyolite. The third volcanic suite consists of andesitic and rhyolitic lavas and some basalt erupted between about 22 to 6 m.y. ago in the western Great Basin along the northwest-trending Walker Lane fault zone. Hydrothermal ore deposits are associated with all suites of igneous rocks, but the largest production has come from mines associated with andesitic rocks of the third (western Great Basin) suite. The oldest (34 to 42 m.y.) andesitic rocks (first suite) of the northern Great Basin have produced some large deposits; slightly younger silicic rocks of this suite are mostly barren. Many small ore deposits are associated with the 17- to 8-m.y.-old basalts (second suite) of northern Nevada.

In 1989 an Autogenous Grinding Task Force was formed to study potential autogenous grinding circuits to replace the existing semi-autogenous grinding at the National Steel Pellet Plant located in Keewatin, Minnesota. Pilot plant test work performed by the Hanna Research Center (HRC) indicated that fully autogenous grinding with pebble extraction and crushing could feasibly be incorporated into the existing circuits. In 1990, one of the existing ten grinding mills was converted for an in-plant test incorporating pebble crushing. The full scale test work conducted in 1990 and 1991 verified the pilot plant projections with primary mill throughputs from the fully autogenous circuit utilizing pebble crushing being greater than throughput of the existing SAG mill circuits.

The dissolution behavior of copper and gold from their pure state and from Au/Cu alloys in cyanide solutions has been investigated using a rotating disc. Oxygen was used as an oxidant. The effect of the composition of the alloys, stirring speed of the disc, concentration of lixiviants and temperature on the overall dissolution kinetics has been studied. Gold/copper alloys of three compositions were used in this study. The atomic percent of gold in these alloys was 75, 50 and 25, respectively. The dissolution behavior of these three alloys was compared with that of pure gold and of copper under the same chemical conditions. In general, the dissolution of copper and gold from alloys is partially controlled by surface chemical reaction and largely by mass transfer.

The Australian coal industry over recent years has experienced the situation whereby exploration and mine development are moving into geographical areas where the coal seams have never been mined to any extent in the past, if at all, and particularly where there is no history of experience in preparation of these seams. Additionally, the demands have been such that the development of a mine up to production stage should proceed with minimum delay. This is a situation which is of some importance and concern, in view of the coal quality requirements now experienced within world markets which can only be met, in most cases, by careful preparation. Costs are such that the preparation plant should operate as required by the situation and with maximum efficiency, which means that laboratoty information of breakage and washability characteristics which are required for preparation plant design should be accurate and available as soon as possible, even to a certain extent during the progress of the exploration.
