"Historically, mining companies worldwide provided housing and developed towns to accommodate their employees. At the end of the 1980s this approach became less prevalent and attempts were made to mitigate the effects of mine development and mine closure on communities living near the mines. Permanent settlement in mining towns urgently needed to be minimized. Since the advent of democracy, South African policy has moved in the opposite direction, shifting the emphasis to creating integrated communities and encouraging home ownership. Despite this policy shift, however, mines continue to influence local housing conditions. One direct outcome has been the development of informal settlements. We surveyed 260 informal settlement households in Postmasburg, a small and remotely located town in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. We found that because they employ contract workers and thus arouse expectations of employment, the mines here contribute extensively to the development of informal settlements. But local factors also contribute, and the functional role of informal settlements as a form of housing that supports mobility should not be underestimated. We also found that both municipal and mining company policies for informal settlements were inadequate. Finally, we found that low-income informal settlers not associated with mine employment suffered the highest levels of social disruption.IntroductionA mine generates demand for labour, which in turn generates demand for housing. When settlements spring up near a mine this often means poor housing conditions. In South Africa in the 1960s and 1970s mining companies invested heavily in company towns or mining settlements, but they have become increasingly hesitant to do so, for three reasons. First, declining resource prices in the mid-1980s and the 1990s compelled them to focus on core business interests and reduce the costs of peripheral activities such as housing (Bryceson and MacKinnon, 2013); second, at the turn of the 20th century they were often accused of taking over the role of local government (IIED, 2002) and consequently became hesitant to invest in developing mining towns; and third, changing labour regimes also curbed their investment in such towns (Haslam McKenzie, 2010). Increasingly, the companies began to endorse block-roster shifts, and outsourcing also became more common in the early 1990s. Block-roster shifts in Australia (together with improved technology) have meant that miners do not need to settle near the mines but can fly in and fly out and have their urban houses as their stable homes. This has had serious negative implications for housing in remote towns in Australia, particularly worker camps, large-scale renting out of available accommodation, and ‘hot-bedding’."

Geological and geotechnical data are essential for the design of tunnels. To determine the rock mass behavior and the support of a planned tunnel excavation a consistent method for rock mass characterization and excavation and support determination has been developed. Probabilistic data processing with analytical methods is used for the quantification of the procedure and allows an evaluation of the applicability and the technical risk of different excavation and support methods. The sensitivity of the procedure on selected input parameters is highlighted in a parametric study. Finally an application of the procedure illustrates the use of the described method of probabilistic excavation and support determination for tunnels. Des données géologiques et géotechniques sont décisives pour la planification d’un tunnel. Pour la détermination du comportement des strates, le choix du soutènement et de la méthode de progression une description compréhensible de la montagne a été développée. À l'aide d'un traitement de données probabiliste, la procédure proposée est transposée quantitative sur une base de méthodes analytiques. De cette manière l'évaluation des méthodes de construction et la détermination du risque technique deviennent possibles. La sensitivité de la procédure de différents paramètres d'entrée est représentée dans une étude de paramètre. Pour finir, l'application de la procédure décrite est montrée à l’aide d'un cas pratique. Geologische und geotechnische Daten sind entscheidend für die Planung von Tunnels. Für die Ermittlung des Gebirgsverhaltens und der Festlegung von Ausbruch und Stützung wurde ein nachvollziehbarer Ablauf der Gebirgsbeschreibung entwickelt. Mit Hilfe von probabilistischer Datenverarbeitung auf Grundlage analytischer Methoden wird die vorgeschlagene Prozedur quantiativ umgesetzt. Dadurch werden die Bewertung von Baumethoden und die Ermittlung des technischen Risikos ermöglicht. Die Sensitivität des Verfahrens von einzelnen Eingangsparametern wird in einer Parameterstudie dargestellt. Abschließend wird anhand eines Beispiels die Anwendung des beschriebenen Verfahrens gezeigt.

In this paper the authors describe the developed algorithms of short- and medium-term planning of underground mining operations. The algorithms were developed using the example of the flat-back cut-and-fill method, and provide multifactor accounting of mining conditions, technical and technological limitations: state and properties of the rock mass; the current mining situation; mining rules; availability of safety pillars; properties of the filling; additional characteristics of technological objects that complicate the driving of workings; sufficiency of human and technical resources; employee specialisation; existing machinery and equipment; opportunities and limitations of the transport scheme of the mine, and work schedule. The paper is presented by means of a dynamic model of mining development, which shows the sequence of mining operations in the mine workings. Besides animation, the tool provides an opportunity to form tabular and graphical reports.

INFACON XI has no doubt earned the distinction as the first such Congress in India. This prestigious occasion could become a reality of a long cherished dream of the Indian Ferroalloy Producers, consumers and ex-porters. The International Committee of Ferro Alloys (ICFA), South Africa, the august body for organising INFACON, every three years, could be convinced by the Indian Ferro Alloy Producers? Association (IFAPA) to award INFACON (XI) to India. This Congresss, organized by IFAPA, has opened a window for the Ferroalloy Community of India, the up-coming Asian Tiger, to register their strength and weakness to the world forum with the principal objectives of evolving long and short-term optimum road-maps for development. It is to be reckoned that India is poised to be a steel giant by 2020 when it is envisaged that the steel production may reach a level of 120 million tons of which significant proportion has to be in the categories of alloy and special steels, requiring standard and high grade ferroalloys. Keeping the above objective in view, the theme of this Congress has been rightfully designed as ?Innovations in Ferro Alloy Industry.? This Congress has also earned a distinction of more than eighty papers, finally selected for inclusion in the Proceedings. More than 100 internationally and nationally reputed experts in the field of ferroalloys (technology and manufacturing practices as well as world scenario) have been approached for critical review of abstracts and selection for the proceedings. It needs to be mentioned without the cooperation received from ICFA the high standard of INFACON could not have been assured. The papers are suitably grouped under seventeen heads, starting from world situation to production and operation followed by present and future technologies and finally to modelling and simulation. It is a Herculean task to the Technical Committee to fit these papers in proper sequence. The Commit-tee members kept no stone unturned to ensure the cogency with the subject matters and at the same timekeeping the flexibility of interests of the participant, especially in the context of three parallel sessions. The Proceedings containing only refereed papers of high quality, will serve the entire gamut of ferroalloy industry and will also highlight the present status of concerned countries. The areas of attention to make the industries globally competitive and at the same time laying emphasis on the prevailing practices, will help the industry leaders to formulate an appropriate global approach. Following the break-through step, instilled by INFACON XI, the Proceedings will be available both in bound and in searchable electronic CD-ROM format. I, as the Chairman of the Technical Committee would like to express thanks and high appreciation to all the Committee members for their whole hearted efforts in all respects without which it would not have been possible to complete these proceedings in the scheduled time. KLAPWIJK INTRODUCTION It has often been stated that it is hardly possible in South Africa to classify Bantumade iron hoes according to their places of origin and manufacture. It is well known that these hoes were used for barter, and as currency in the purchase of livestock or the payment of lobolo, although reports of the value of the hoes differ widely. The difficulty in their classification has arisen from their distribution over a very wide area.

If one is to discuss sensibly and beneficially the whole spectrum of education, training, and employment of engineers, it is not possible to confine oneself to Professional Engineers because the profession of engineering embraces also technologists, technicians, and those people known in South Africa as certificated engineers. It would therefore be imprudent if this seminar were to be limited to certain sectors of the profession and industry. I hope that it will review the full situation from top to bottom and from side to side. New President of FAPA Mr Douglas H. Mills took office as President of the Federation of Societies of Professional Engineers on 1st July, 1985.

Austenitic manganese-steel castings are very widely used in crushing and grinding in the' gold-mining industry in South Africa, The service life of a casting in a short-head crusher is difficult to predict because there are no clear-cut criteria by which such a judgement can be made, The addition of molybdenum and zirconium to the castings for crushers failed to result in improved performance, The results of extensive tests with through-hardened steel castings were very disappointing, mainly because of a design factor in the bowl liner. The design of the bowl liner is an important determinant of the life and performance of these castings. The extent to which the material in a crusher is reduced in size has profound effects on the consumption of metal and power, and on the effective life of a casting. Tests on manganese-steel castings in an 8 ft by 12 ft rod mill provided data on the total consumption of metal, and on the variations in the pattern and rates of wear of liners over lengthy periods. Progressive changes in the wear profiles of the lifter bars and the other liner components showed unexpected features. There are clear indications that, whereas a set of lifter bars will at first lift the charge strongly with relatively little slippage, there is a later period characterized by more slippage and greater wear on all the liner components.

This title of is not that originally chosen for the Colloquium, which was 'A high gold price'. Such a title would have been unfortunate because it would have related the Colloquium only to the high gold price of the past two years, which reached the dizzy peak of 850 dollars per ounce in January 1980. The chosen title is, of course, the right one because it places the whole problem in the right perspective. It relates to a situation that has occurred many times before. Over the course of the past century, the gold price has periodically been inhibited from rising, so that it has undergone a succession of stepwise increments. With each increase, the relationship of the working cost to the gold price alters, and gives rise to a jump in ore reserves. Award for CMI fuelling technique Consolidated Metallurgical Industries Limited - the Lydenburg-based ferrochromium producer in the J.C.I. group - was one of the five recipients of the 1981 National Productivity Institute annual award.

Although a regulation is in force that all water used underground shall be free of bacterial contamination, in practice it is often very difficult to accomplish this. The standard method of disinfection m South African mines IS treatment with calcium hypochlorite, although liquid sodium hypochlorite is used at a few sites. Primarily because the process depends on human control for the addition of the hypochlorite and the regulation of its now, it is frequently found difficult to disinfect mine water adequately and continuously. In many marine environments, chlorine generated by the electrolysis of seawater in its passage through an electric cell is used for disinfection. The generation procedure is continuous and needs no human control except for occasional checking of the equipment. This paper describes the successful implementation of the process, suitably .modified, .at four underground sites. After severe scaling problems had been overcome, a procedure resulted that chlorinates considerably more effectively than the previous system (dosing with calcium hypochlorite), and that has a lower amortized operating cost.

Noise is a form of pollution arising mainly from the activities of man. One such activity is mining, in which man, as in many of his other activities, uses machinery of various kinds to achieve safe, healthy, and economic production. Trackless mining makes use of an advanced state of technology over that required In traditional mining methods. One of the advantages of the former, as distinct from any disadvantages it may have, is a reduction in noise levels, the number of people exposed to noise, and the duration of their exposure to noise. This paper briefly examines why noise is a problem and what various countries are doing about it in terms of standards, codes of practice, and regulations. It also investigates the extent to which noise is a problem in mining and how trackless mining alleviates this problem. The question is then posed as to whether South Africa is not setting too high a standard at this stage of its national development by comparison with what is being done by other, more-advanced countries.

This paper describes a study of the destination of the mercury that is present in the ore during the recovery of gold. It was found that over 96 per cent of the mercury passed through the process untouched. A small amount finds its way into cyanide solution, and is concentrated with gold in Zinc dust as Merrill precipitate. When the precipitate is calcined, the mercury is driven off and finds its way into the atmosphere. However, dilution of the stack gas in the atmosphere appears to be sufficient to prevent hazardous concentrations arising at ground level. No other significant concentrations of mercury were found at any stage of the process. The amount of mercury lost to the atmosphere by this mechanism appears to be less than 200 kg per year throughout the gold-mining industry in South Africa. Virtually no mercury vapour could be detected in the air in the smelt-house. Slight increases in mercury concentrations above background level were observed in soils around the reduction plants and in the discharge or return waters, but no environmental stress is anticipated from these increases.

This paper describes in broad outline the development of a computer programme for determining the effects of changes in various factors in the condenser water circuit on the operation of a cooling plant. The programme is used to obtain design figures which result in minimum total power consumption. This was done for a range of different upcast air quantities, and the implications of low air quantities for heat rejection are discussed.

Although several models for the carbon-in-pulp (CIP) or carbon-in-leach (CIL) processes have been published, most of these models do not consider in detail the way in which the carbon phase flows on large-scale plants. This paper illustrates the importance of these details if the CIP or CIL process is to be modeled correctly. An appropriate model, based on population-balance techniques, is then derived. Suitable mathematical techniques for the solution of the model equations are also described. Finally, a method for estimating the model parameters for a full-scale plant is described.

The results of laboratory abrasive and abrasive-corrosive tests carried out on a range of carbon, Iowalloy, and stainless steels are compared with underground tests conducted on similar materials on prototype shaker conveyors carrying gold-bearing quartzitic rock. The dry-abrasion resistance of all the steels was found to be better than that of mild steel. When the added effect of corrosion was tested, the stainless steels proved to be much superior to proprietary abrasion-resistant alloys both in the laboratory and underground. The ferritic stainless grades were shown to be superior on the basis of cost per unit of volume lost. This investigation has shown that laboratory tests on materials can provide valuable information on their possible performance in situ, and can thus be used to replace lengthy experiments on site.

The paper addresses pipe flows of aqueous medium-sand slurries at velocities lower than the deposition-limit velocity. Laboratory test results including measurements of particle concentration distributions are used in order to describe a flow with a (pseudo-) linear concentration gradient above a stationary bed. Particle dispersion within the flow is evaluated and a stratification-ratio equation is formulated, estimating a portion of contact load in the flow. The formula is incorporated in the proposed predictive model for the hydraulic gradient for a medium-sand flow above a stationary bed.

With the increased variability of today's large-scale mining operations, consistent flotation performance is important to improving and sustaining overall recovery through the circuit. The Newcrest Telfer Mine has implemented advanced process control technology to obtain stable level operation and consistent mass pull in the copper rougher and scavenger flotation circuits. The final result has been an overall reduction in variability, which impacts on both copper and gold recovery. This paper describes the methodology and implementation of the improvements in control at the Newcrest Telfer Mine as being an essential part of the business for minerals processing.

"The extreme depths and consequent expense of drilling and sampling the gold-bearing reefs of the Witwatersrand Basin have resulted in limited data being available for estimation of grade ahead of the mining face. There is, however, a wealth of information from mined-out areas of these deposits. This estimation challenge resulted in the development of a unique method of Mineral Resource estimation.AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) utilizes a technique termed macro cokriging (MCK), which allows for the integration of the limited advanced borehole data with the large chip sample data-sets from the previously mined-out areas by adopting a Bayesian geostatistical approach. The MCK process, in short, is the estimation of mixed support size data together with the application of four-parameter distribution models.The gold value estimation for the Carbon Leader Reef (CLR) on the AGA TauTona Mine is used in this paper as a case study of the process and to demonstrate the effectiveness of this technique through production reconciliation. The current method has been proven over the last 20 years and is now an established part of the Mineral Resource evaluation process within AGA.IntroductionOwing to the extreme depths of the goldbearing reefs at the AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) Witwatersrand operations and the prohibitive expense and time involved in drilling boreholes to the required depth, only limited drilling and sampling data is available ahead of the mining face. A kinetic model framework for single particle kinetics in combined diffusion and adsorption processes is presented. The framework applies to the general case in which both diffusion and the adsorption reaction play important roles in determining the overall rate in processes where the migrating species can both adsorb and accumulate. The technique, which should be applicable to a wide range of reaction mechanisms, consists of an iterative integration procedure for the coupled diffusion and reaction equations. The case of a reversible linear adsorption reaction rate is developed. In order to verify the technique as a legitimate method of model development, an analytical solution for the identical case is derived and compared to the numerical solution. Excellent agreement exists between the two solutions.

This paper summarizes the characteristics of Southern African coals, presents a fundamental approach to the combustion performance of coal, and reviews some of the recent developments in the fields of technological evaluation and boiler design for coals typical of this region. This includes a summary of the petrographic constituents of coa~ highlighting the differences between the Palaeozoic coals of the northern and southern hemispheres (Laurasia and Gondwana respectively), and the effects of these properties on the combustion performance of coal as seen in terms of laboratory, pilot-scale, and full-scale operating conditions. Recent developments in boiler design linked to advanced characterization studies and commercial experience have led to unprecedented use, with maximum effect, of the low-grade, high-ash, high-inertinite coals typical of some parts of this region. In the light of this success, more adequate understanding and better methods of assessment of the coals typical of the Gondwana region are called for, particularly in the light of the price premium for high-grade coal and the more cost-effective lower grade coals on the international steam markets.
