Society is fully justified in its concern about the environment, but that concern may, at present, be too uncritical It is, for instance, essential to establish that there is a valid environmental impact, and that there is truly a causal link between a human activity and an observed shift in environmental conditions. In establishing these, it inessential to recognize that scientific proof offers consistency, but that it can never provide completeness. Thus, no amount of scientific endeavour can ever prove that mitigation of the effects of human activity will be perfect. Society normally expresses its concern through legislation. The existing legislation in South Africa is reviewed, and it is found that [>legislation regarding water is probably too stringent to be effective, >legislation regarding air and land use is probably too lax, >all the environmental legislation is too fragmented to be efficient, and the Department of Environmental Affairs is hamstrung by inter-departmental rivalry. ] It is accordingly concluded that, if means are to be found for ensuring adequate mitigation of environmental impact in the face of ongoing economic development, it is necessary to establish a Judicial Commission on Environmental Affairs advised by, but given greater powers than, the departments currently active in environmental maters. This Commission should be charged with creating, perhaps over a decade, a body of legislation that would guide development while protecting the environment in its widest sense.

The optimal design of production phases and ultimate pit limit for an open pit mining operation may be generated using conventional or stochastic approaches. Unlike the conventional approach, the stochastic framework accounts for expected variability and uncertainty in metal content by considering a set of equally probable realizations (models) of the orebody. This paper evaluates the performance of a new stochastic network flow approach for the development of optimal phase design and ultimate pit limit using a gold deposit as the case study. The stochastic and conventional frameworks as considered here utilize the maximum flow and Lerchs-Grossman (LG) algorithms, respectively. The LG algorithm is restricted to considering an estimated (average-type) orebody model, while the stochastic maximum flow algorithm is developed to simultaneously use a set of simulated orebody realizations as an input. The case study demonstrates that, when compared to the conventional LG algorithm as used in the industry, the stochastic approach generates a 30 per cent increase in discounted cash flow, a21 per cent larger ultimate pit limit, and about 7 per cent more metal, while it maintains a consistency in phase size.

A fuel cell is an electrochemical engine that converts the chemical energy of a fuel, such as hydrogen, and an oxidant, such as oxygen, directly into electricity. The emerging fuel cell industry may represent a major opportunity for the global platinum mining industry. This is because low temperature fuel cell systems use platinum group metals as catalysts. Fuel cell vehicles may become the most important driver of future platinum demand within years of their commercialization. A great number of factors impact on and drive the diffusion of fuel cell vehicle innovation. Such drivers range from energy security to environmental concerns and the technological development of fuel cells and systems. Such factors and drivers of fuel cell vehicle diffusion are combined with the generic ?body of knowledge? on ?technology forecasting? and ?diffusion of innovation? to design a framework that provides a holistic approach to the analysis of this complex enterprise. An attempt is made in this paper to address the following questions: Which types of fuel cells require platinum group metals? Which types of fuel cells will achieve dominant design status? Will fuel cell vehicles diffuse successfully? How big will the impact of successful fuel cell vehicle diffusion be on future platinum demand? How well do fuel cell vehicles compete with incumbent technologies such as spark-ignited and compression-ignited internal combustion engine-driven vehicles? How soon will oil depletion start to drive the diffusion of fuel cell vehicles? How important is hydrogen as a fuel? What impact does the inadequate hydrogen fuelling infrastructure have on fuel cell vehicle diffusion? The paper contains some initial results of a research project that has the aim of producing a schedule of future platinum demand generated from fuel cell vehicles. Comminution is a critical stage of mineral processing which aims to reduce the size of ore particles through breakage, consequently increasing the likelihood of liberation of valuable minerals. Several factors, such as pre-existing cracks, mineralogical composition and particle size, are known to affect ore breakage behaviour. While investigating the contributing role of each factor is essential to improve understanding of breakage, isolating individual factors by experiment is typically impractical. Numerical techniques such as the Bonded Particle Model-Discrete Element Method (BPM-DEM) have been developed as a means of studying closely controlled breakage conditions. This study evaluates this technique in modelling the effect of pre-existing cracks breakage behaviour for synthetic ore specimens during impact breakage in a short impact load cell (SILC). Synthetic ore was modelled as a collection of discrete entities connected by brittle-elastic beams. Model parameters were calibrated against macroscopic material properties of a conventional homogenous synthetic ore. The extent of pre-existing cracks within specimens was prescribed by varying discontinuities between the connecting entities. An approach with the insertion of seed points was used to model the mineralogy of the specimens. Results showed that pre-existing cracks resulted in a decrease in the fracture force as the crack density increased. Additionally, the irregularity of fracture patterns within rock specimens after impact became more apparent as the crack density increased. The findings were used to emphasise some of the attributable causes of the variation observed between ore hardness characterisation tests and in situ ore behaviour. Wet high-intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS) for the concentration of gold and uranium was tested on many Witwatersrand cyanidation residues, and on some ores and flotation tailings. The results varied, but many indicated recoveries of over 60 per cent of the gold and uranium. The main source of loss is the inefficiency of WHIMS for material of smaller particle size than 20fLm. The recoveries in the continuous tests were lower than those in the batch tests. The continuous tests indicated an operational difficulty that could be experienced in practice, namely the tendency for wood chips and ferromagnetic particles to block the matrix of the separator. It was decided that a solution to the problem lies in the modification of the separator to allow continuous removal of the matrix for cleaning. A system has been developed for this purpose and is being demonstrated on a pilot-plant scale. Promising results were obtained in tests on a process that combines a coarse grind, gravity concentration, and WHIMS. In the gravity-concentration step, considerable recoveries, generally over SO per cent, of high-grade pyrite. were obtained, together with high recoveries of gold and moderate, but possibly important, recoveries of uranium. A simple model describing the operation of the WHIMS machine in terms of the operating parameters is described. This should reduce the amount of empirical test work required for the optimization of operating conditions and should provide a basis for scale-up calculations. The economics of the WHIMS process is discussed.

The paper reviews the restrictions imposed by the Department of Mines (now the Department of Mineral and Energy Affairs) on the surface use of ground that has been undermined at shallow depths (down to a depth of244m). The reasons for the restrictions are discussed, with special reference to the early records kept by the Department of Mines on subsidence and fracture of the surface. A discussion of the nature of the strata overlying the ore-body, and the effect of undermining, is followed by a detailed account of investigational work, particularly since 1970, on the stability of shallowly undermined ground. The significance of the data collected during the investigations is considered next, with special reference to the social and economic implications. These are so farreaching, that it is proposed that the already flexible approach of the Department of Mineral and Energy Affairs in considering what structures may be built on undermined ground should become even more flexible. To this end, the appointment of a Commission is proposed to collect as much information as possible on the stability of ground undermined at shallow depth, and to revise the current overrestrictive conditions or guide lines that are in use.

South Africa holds approximately three-quarters of the world?s viable chromite ore resources and dominates the global production of ferrochrome. Albeit completely unintended, small amounts of Cr(VI) are formed during ferrochrome production. Certain Cr(VI)species are regarded as carcinogenic, hence making the treatment of some ferrochrome waste materials necessary. In this paper, the Cr(VI) treatment strategies currently employed by the South African ferrochrome producers are investigated by means of a literature review and a questionnaire survey. From the discussion, it is evident that various treatment strategies are available to deal with Cr(VI)-containing waste in the ferrochrome industry. However, by far the most commonly applied treatment strategy remains the aqueous reduction of Cr(VI) with ferrous iron. The advantages and the correct application of this strategy, together with the disadvantages and pitfalls, are argued. Innovative improvements on historic practices are also discussed

The demand for continuous improvement in the industrial world is an ongoing process. Some sectors, where the competitive forces are well established, have led the development of new and reliable technological innovations. Although the metallurgical industry can rightfully be proud of its process improvements, there is still work to be done in materials and in material handling. In some cases, the improvements will be as simple as adopting technologies that have been perfected in other processing or manufacturing industries. This paper discusses the next design generation for copper tankhouses which will yield: ?Improved copper quality ?Improved equipment availability ?Lower life cycle costs ?Safer operations. These benefits will be realized through new developments and design improvements in: ?Permanent cathodes ?Cathode washing ?Cathode stripping machines ?Anode preparation machines ?Improved lead anode design ?Recycling of lead anodes and refurbishment of cathodes. The demand for base metals, and in particular copper, has led to more research into improving efficiencies in electrowinning and refinery plants around the world. One of the areas previously taken as a matter of course was the production of lead anodes and stainless steel cathodes. In South America alone there are over 600 000 cathodes and anodes in circulation?a very significant figure.

The Mine Site Technologies, MST BlastPED ST is a wireless/remote blasting system used in more than sixty (60) mines (including two mines in Zambia and one in Tanzania) since its release in 2002. The system consists of a controller and signal tube initiator which communicate wirelessly using spread spectrum frequency. This technique ensures a robust and secure wireless link between the controller and the signal tube initiator. The configuration of the system ensures ease of use with all the instructions for initiating the blast printed on the equipment. This means little or no formal training is required to use the system. The technology enables you to have your blasting point at a distance of up to 4 km, line of sight (LOS), as opposed to the traditional distance of 500m from the blast. This ensures the blast takes place from a safer and secure location. The paper and presentation will provide the audience with the benefit of many years of international mining know-how in this technology as well as more recent local African experiences. There will be references to demonstration blasts done in South Africa, current users in Africa and elsewhere. Practical Return on Investment (ROI) calculations and references to safe blasting practice will also be included.

"Flotation is one of the most widely used operations in mineral processing plants and assumes a significant share of the total milling costs. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a new set of capital and operating cost models for major flotation machines based on the application of single (SRA) and multiple regression analysis (MRA). Thirty-seven major flotation machines were analysed for this purpose. Depending on the machinery type, different technical variables such as diameter, required air flow rate, required floor space, cell volume, required air pressure, and power were considered as predictor variables, individually (in SRA) or simultaneously (in MRA). Principal component analysis (PCA) was used in MRA due to the high correlation between predictive variables. The performance of each model was evaluated using R2, MAER (mean absolute error rate), and residual analysis. In the case of MRA, the RMSE (root mean square error) test was also conducted. Maximum obtained MAER of 13.5% and minimum R2 of 0.86 indicated that these models could be applied as credible tools in estimation of capital and operating costs of flotation machines for design and feasibility studies.IntroductionMineral processing is a vital part of mining projects and mainly involves comminution, sizing, concentration, extractive metallurgical processes, and dewatering. Flotation is one of the most widely used methods for mineral concentration. Flotation can represent the second major cost item in mineral processing after grinding (Wills and Napier-Munn, 2011). Accordingly, it is a main concern of mining project managers to select and optimize flotation circuits in order to decrease costs and increase productivity. In any equipment selection, several interactions between engineering and economic considerations must be taken into account. Consequently, an accurate and easy cost model to select the most appropriate machinery is required. Moreover, cost models could be used in flow sheet simulations applied in design and optimization. Models of unit operations built into the simulators could be improved by linking the equipment cost models (Khalesi et al., 2015)."

Stochastic methods are normally invoked / used to assist with the understanding of risks, when there is uncertainty around a particular outcome. Uncertainty implies that there is a risk that the desired outcome will not be realized. Stochastics and probability theory has long held out the promise to answering this need, but has often been maligned because of its misuse. This paper takes a critical look need for Monte Carlo simulation to project risk evaluation and highlights what is considered to be the fundamental issues that should be thoughtfully considered to avoid the abuse of this technique. The upside of avoiding the abuse of this technique will be the wider acceptance by practitioners that it is a credible technique to quantify this important aspect of valuation.

Namakwa Sands, an Anglo Operations Limited subsidiary, is a world-class producer of heavy minerals. A layer of duricrust imposes a pseudo-stratigraphy to the primary deposit and has sterilized part of the generally unconsolidated ore in the open cast mine. The bulk of this ore cannot be treated by the present infrastructure, which employs conventional mineral separation technology. The mineralogy of the cementing agent consists of magnesium and calcium silicates and minor carbonates in addition to clay minerals such as sepiolite and those from the smectite group. Although the duricrust ore is friable and can be easily crushed, the significant clay-sized slime fraction produced, in particular the highly sorptive sepiolite, adversely affects mineral separation. The geometallurgical challenge is to cost-effectively remove the slimes from the ore before it is delivered to the concentrator.

This paper summarizes the works that the Research “Group of Ground Engineering”, belonging to the Mining Department of the University of Oviedo, Spain, has been developing in close cooperation with the Regional Mining Department, since 2001, in order to control and monitor an experimental underground limestone exploitation by the room and pillars method. The aim of the current research is not only the geotechnical characterization of the rock mass (by means of laboratory and site tests) or the instrumentation of its displacements and stress changes (using convergence meters, INCREX probe, extensometers and rigid inclusion cells), but, moreover, to undertake intensive monitoring and control of such pilot mine, which is mined exclusively in order to accomplish this research. The data transmission was made on line via Internet, to achieve a full understanding of the behaviour of the experimental mine, to access data from remote locations and to visualize results from a website. All the collected information becomes input data for several numerical models using finite differences under a program developed in the research Group, ALMEC. The simulation and a final economical analysis lead to a design of an underground exploitation, at production scale, for a resource that is traditionally mined by means of open-pit process methods that could be worked underground with less environmental impact. The main purpose achieved by this exhaustive analysis is the technical and economic viability of such mine, for their optimisation for a future productive exploitation.

The MRMR Classification System was developed specifically for mining applications, namely caving operations, and is one of three rock mass classification systems used in the South African mining industry today. Increased usage of the MRMR Classification System has raised concerns that it does not adequately address the role played by discontinuities, veins and cemented joints in a jointed rock mass. To address these concerns, Laubscher and Jakubec introduced the In-Situ Rock Mass Classification System (IRMR) in the year 2000. Although the IRMR System is more applicable to a jointed rock mass than the MRMR System, a quantitative comparison of the MRMR and IRMR Classification Systems indicates that there is not a significant difference between the resultant rock mass rating values derived from the two Classification Systems.

SYNOPSIS The theory of elasticity has been shown to provide a means of determining the stresses and displacements induced by mining in deep level hard rock mines. This theory has been incorporated into an electrical resistance analogue on which the plane of a reef or ore-body can be modelled to enable the rapid determination of stresses and displacements at points in the plane of the reef. This electrical analogue has been used to determine energy release rates caused by scattered mining, which, to some extent, is a measure of the degree of hangingwall fracture. A correlation between predicted energy release rates and actual underground conditions in stopes in the O.F.S. goldfields has been encouraging enough to define parameters on which future stoping layouts can be based. The use of the elastic theory through the analogue has been extended to the assessment of the influence of stoping operations on off-reef excavations. Underground conditions at damaged and undamaged areas have been compared with predicted elastic stresses at the positions under review, resulting in the derivation of design parameters for use in siting off-reef excavations in the prevailing geological conditions in the O.F.S. and Klerksdorp goldfields. The analogue has also been used to assess the vulnerability of certain un mined dykes to bursting. Correlations between stresses induced on dykes by stoping and dyke behaviour underground has enabled critical stress levels to be determined for several persistent dykes occurring in the O.F.S. and Klerksdorp goldfields. A number of long and short term planning projects at mines operating in the Anglo American Corporation and General Mining and Finance Groups are described, where the data derived from the electrical resistance analogue is processed by computer programmes and assessed on the strength of the design factors derived from the correlation of field work and the elastic theory.

The South African platinum mining industry is using a number of different mining methods, including variations of the same method, to extract the narrow reef tabular platinum deposits of the Bushveld Complex. These mining methods fall into three broad categories, namely conventional, mechanised and hybrid mining. A question sometimes asked in the industry is whether mechanized mining methods are more efficient than conventional mining methods. An objective answer requires the methods to be evaluated against multiple criteria simultaneously, whereby each criterion has a relative degree of importance in the overall decision. The most efficient method is the one that scores highest on each criterion. However, some of the criteria can be conflicting, such as by increasing dilution the shaft head grade decreases. The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) methodology was selected for the study because it is used to solve problems of this nature. A survey was carried out to determine the relative importance of each efficiency criterion by drawing on the knowledge and experience of mine technical services and project management practitioners in the industry. Efficiency data for four different mining methods drawn from the Egerton (2004) study were used as a case study. The conventional mining method ranked as the most efficient mining method from the four methods considered. The exercise indicates potential for the AHP to be used in the South African platinum mining industry as a tool for selecting optimal layout designs, conduct regular evaluation of the performance of production shafts, or objectively evaluate line managers for promotion. The work described in this paper is part of the methodology used in a current PhD research study at the University of the Witwatersrand. Palabora Mining Company is operating a copper block cave mine in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. The mine was developed in the late nineties with a target ore reserve of 220 million tonnes of carbonatite at 0.69% copper. At 30,000 tonnes per day the operation had an estimated life of mine of approximately 23 years. Cave induced open pit side wall failure occurred in late 2004 with 130 million tonnes of waste reporting to the bottom of the open pit. This failure resulted in potential sterilization and dilution of the ore reserve and subsequent reduction in life of mine. Physical and numerical modelling indicated potential losses of up to 30% of the original ore reserves. Cave Management tools based on throughput principles are utilized to manage the failed waste ingress and ensure an optimum life of mine. Extracting the maximum rate possible, as soon as draw points are commissioned, with the view of achieving the highest production in the short term, is any mining operation?s goal as more money is required sooner. This approach, of course, improves the cash flow but presents a risk in the cave propagation profile as overall draw control is compromised. At Palabora it is evident from a Mineral Resource Throughput Management (MRTM) point of view that maximum production in the short term is not the solution. If high production rates are achieved and the profile of the cave is not manage correctly, this results in failed waste reporting to draw points earlier with adverse effects on grade. This would effectively and significantly shorten Palabora?s Life of Mine. The applications of good MRTM principles are required to assist the value chain for sustained profitability. The process commenced with change management paving the way for a better understanding and a holistic view for all role players.

Currently the most widely used formula in pillar design is the power formula, which implicitly assumes a volume effect. This assumption is critically examined, and it is proposed .that a limiting strength value, the critical rock mass strength, be used for pillar design instead. A methodology is provided to determine this value. It is suggested that the effects of geometry on pillar strength are well described by a linear function and the power formula, for w/h ratios less than or equal to about 5. This approach together with the use of the critical rock mass strength, removes the volume effect. Various factors that affect pillar strength are examined. The concept of explicitly determining the stability of each component in the pillar system is briefly discussed. It is proposed that pillar design be expanded to a pillar system design procedure that incorporates the interaction of the pillar, roof and floor strata, and the loading system.

The main sulphide zone (MSZ) of the Great Dyke is cryptic and without obvious stratigraphic markers. Although there are trends in the dimensions of the PGE and base metal profiles across the Hartley Complex, the profiles are invariant within a particular mining area. Ratios derived from these profiles are used to interpret diamond drill cores drilled ahead of underground development. Detailed logging of oriented core shows the exact position and attitude of intersected faults. Metal ratios are used to estimate fault throw to within 25 cm. It is possible to draw detailed sections showing the extent of ground disturbance well ahead of mining.
