"Field inspections and data relative to the use of rubber—sheathed trailing cables in mines show that much cable is ruined or its probable life shortened by being overheated in service.The length of cable required to make connection from a source of supply to a machine at the face workings may be 100 to 500 feet. As a rule, the cable is carried on a reel and unreeled as required; and thus in most cases some of the cable is not removed from the reel. The overheating generally occurs in that part of the cable which is left on the reel.Factors that determine the heating of trailing cables are:1. The size of the conductors in the cable.2. The maximum energy to be supplied through the cable, based upon the horsepower of the motor and the degree to which the motor is loaded.3. The voltage of the supply and the variation of the voltage at the receiving4. The time length of current flow and whether continuous or intermittent.5. The kind of current (direct or alternating).6. The amount of cable left on the reel.7. The type of cable used.8. Preliminary experiments are reported utilizing bacteria to leach manganese from a variety of domestic low grade manganiferous materials. In two large leaches manganese extraction ranged from 71.7 to 92.5 percent, and the products analyzed over 48 percent manganese. Nutrient requirements and leaching time experiments were made. The mechanism of leaching is not understood, but is different than the mechanism encountered in the microorganism accelerated leaching of copper in the presence of sulfide minerals.

The Cougar Spar property is in southwestern Beaver County, Utah, approximately 35 miles by road northwest of Lund, a station on the mainline of the Union Pacific Railroad (fig. 1). Original fluorspar discoveries on the property were made a. short time before 1941. During 1941 lessees produced approximately 600 tons of ores averaging 40 percent CaF2. Bureau of Mines engineers examined the property in 1942 and recommended development. Work was begun in December 1942 and completed in October 1943. The area was mapped by members of the Federal Geological Survey during the project period. Development included surface trenching; drifting, and crosscutting, a short distance below the outcrop. The surface work comprised a total of 440 linear feet of bulldozer and hand trenches. A total of 550 feet of workings was driven on the 100-foot level. Samples were taken for assay from the trench exposures and from the underground workings as work progressed. Pocks in the area of the Cougar Spar property are igneous and consist mainly of fine-grained tuff and quartz monzonite porphyry. The fluorspar mineralization occurs in a northwest fault zone.

This information circular is a revision of I.C. 7238, Danger from Carbon Monoxide in the Home, by L. B. Berger and H. H. Schrenk, issued in April 1943. Each winter brings its toll of deaths and serious accidents from the deadly gas, carbon monoxide. Newspapers carry warnings to the public of the, dangers of this gas, and frequent news items report the finding of persons dead at unconscious from the effects of carbon monoxide, yet these accidents continue. Either these warnings are not read, or they are unheeded by people who feel that, "It can't happen to me." It can happen to you carbon monoxide is no respecter of persons.

A joint effort by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) and the US. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) was undertaken to determine how well self-contained self-rescuers (SCSR's), deployed in accordance with Federal regulations (30 CFR 75.1714), held up in the underground environment with regard to both physical damage and aging. This report presents findings regarding laboratory-tested SCSR's in the fourth phase of testing from 1989 to 1993. The SCSRYs were tested on human subjects and on a breathing and metabolic simulator (BMS). These results indicate that most of the apparatus, if they pass their inspection criteria, perform as expected except units with manufacturing defects. However, when the apparatus are carried in and out of the mine daily and stored at the working section, they may suffer abuse. Physical signs of abuse, unless extremely obvious, are frequently not detected by the miners or mine operators. In addition, some apparatus collected for this study had not been returned to the manufacturer in a recall effort for correction of a manufacturing defect. In both cases, the apparatus would have presented problems in emergency use. Recommendations include improved training in inspection procedures and better enforcement of recall notices.

[The legislation in many States against the present method of producing carbon-black by the incomplete combustion of natural gas, and the continually increasing demand for gas for otter purposes, indicates that the supply of carbon-black may Gradually be decreased and that new methods for its production, utilizing a greater parentage of the carbon in the has should be developed. In the course of investigations of the effects on hydrocarbons of high voltage discharges, it was noted that under certain conditions natural gas could be decomposed and that carbon-black could be produced. The effects of several tyres of electrical discharges on natural gas have, accordingly, been studied' in order to find out the fundamental factors underlying the reactions and their possible influence in the recovery of a greater part of the carbon content of natural gas than is now possible. Present commercial plants using natural gas for the manufacture of carbon-black recover from 0.9 to 1.5 pounds of carbon-black per thousand cubic feet of gala consumed, or less than 5 per cent of the total Gabon in the gas: It should be noted, however, that the, present methods involve heating the gas to incandescense by burning it as a luminous flame, and a considerable part of the gas is thus consumed as a source of hest. If this heat can be supplied from some other source, or if a more efficient method of applying the energy con. tamed in part of the gas, to the decomposition of the rest of it, can be worked out, then a greater yield of carbon-black per thousand cubic feet of gas care be expected. The reactions of alumina and alumina monohydrate with wet hydrogen fluoride gas were studied by the Federal Bureau of Mines to determine the feasibility of producing commercial-grade aluminum fluoride from offgases generated by pyrohydrolysis of siliceous fluorspars. The test results showed than an aluminum fluoride reactor operating at maximum efficiency could retain 96 percent of the fluorine contained in off-gases generated by pyrohydrolysis of siliceous fluorspar. The requirements are a reactor temperature of 200° C. and a reactor entrance gas containing 5 mole-percent hydrogen fluoride. Partial pressure equilibrium constants were determined for the reaction of alumina monohydrate and wet hydrogen fluoride gas from 200° to 350° C. and for the reaction of alumina and wet hydrogen fluoride gas from 350° to 700° C. Both reactions are reversible, and they proceed in directions that are dependent upon the temperature and the relative HF:H2O concentration. Logarithms of the equilibrium constants were used to plot the reaction isobars; these can be used to calculate the theoretical maximum efficiency of a reactor processing wet hydrogen fluoride gas between 200° and 700° C. The theoretical maximum efficiency decreases with increasing temperature.

Sodium-aluminum and calcium-aluminum silicates are important rock-forming minerals. While many of them are of only theoretical interest, several are of practical importance--as ceramic raw materials and as potential future sources of aluminum. Heretofore, thermodynamic data for these minerals were incomplete; and in many instances missing data were difficult to estimate reliably. This has seriously hampered thermodynamic calculations pertaining both to the natural formations of these minerals and to their decomposition in sintering and fluxing reactions. This paper reports the results of the Federal Bureau of Mines measurements of low-temperature heat capacities of four crystalline silicate minerals--dehydrated analcite (NaAlSi2O6), hexagonal anorthite (CaA12 Si208), lawsonite (Ca2Al2Si2080?2H20), and leonhardite (Ca2Al4Si8C24?7H2O). It augments previous similar measurements of related minerals, which were summarized recently.4 The measured heat-capacity data were used to derive entropy values for the four minerals at 298.15° K. Some relations between these entropy values and those of other similar minerals were discussed. These relations illustrate the difficulty of estimating entropy values of tertiary (or higher) silicates.

[The Harrington-Hickory mine in the Star raining district, Beaver County, Utah, has produced approximately 20,000 tons of lead-zinc-silver ores since 1910. Production previous to 1910 is not known. The mine is owned by the New Majestic Mining Co. The property was rehabilitated and operated by James D. Williams under a 10-year lease with option to purchase from April 1943 to May 1949, Loans from the Reconstruction Finance Corporation in the aggregate of $41,000 wore used in construction of an access road, rehabilitation of the mine, and purchase of equipment for full-scale operation. The improved, all-weather access road extends from loading ramps on the Union Pacific Railroad at Milord to the urine storage bins 5 miles west o f town. The mine is serviced electrically by a. 5,000-volt line owned by Telluride Power Co. Mine transformers step the voltage down to 440/220/110 for surface and underground service.]

"There is considerable evidence that all mine dusts do not present the same health hazard. Rank of coal and composition, especially silica content of the mine dust, shape, and surface charge are risk factors that affect the incidence and severity of CWP. Current efforts of Center researchers involve characterization of:•,size/shape/composition•,surface and functional groups•,particle interactions.Work is underway to prepare and characterize respirable coal dust samples, and to develop and evaluate techniques and procedures for the characterization of respirable dust. A suite of standard samples including anthracite, medium volatile and high volatile bituminous coals, quartz, clay, and rock dust have been prepared and thoroughly characterized with respect to the distributions of particle size and compositions. A comparison of the morphology of the standard dust particles with similar particles collected in an underground coal mine is given in Figure 43. Samples of these characterized (Standard) dusts have been distributed among various research groups associated with the Center.The aerodynamic diameter of a particle is a particularly important characteristic since this parameter determines the point of deposition in the human respiratory tract. A 3-dimensional numerical model for theoretically determining the equivalent aerodynamic diameter of irregular shaped particles has been developed and used to analyze coal dust particles and a particle shadowing technique has been developed for .experimental 3-dimensional shape analysis (Figure 44). In the theoretical technique, the equivalent aerodynamic diameter of the particle is numerically determined from computation of the fluid drag on the particle. This allows the aerodynamic diameter of any regular or irregular shaped particle to be determined as a function of the particle's orientation or as an average over all particle orientations. The technique is quite accurate in that the aerodynamic diameter of several coal dust particles have been numerically determined to be within 5% of experimentally measured values."

"INTRODUCTION Dark soils are commonly believed to be better for agricultural purposes than light-color soils. Much of this feeling may be purely psychological, as many persons have unconsciously acquired the habit of associating richness of soil with color light soils, however, may be just as rich in humus and plant foods as the best of the dark soils. A dis-cussion of the manifold attributes that play an important role in soil technology is beyond the scope of this paper, but the color factor will be considered, as it has a particular bearing on some field experiments using coal-mine waste as a darkening medium.It has been established that dark soils absorb more of the sun's radiation, consequently are maintained at a higher temperature than light soils. This physical principle is applied in our daily lives in the choice of clothing. White clotnes in summer are cooler than dark ones. Conversely, dark clothes in winter are warmer than light-color clothing. A decided advantage of dark soils over light soils is the higher average temperature of the former, resulting in an earlier maturing crop. This advance of the maturing season may range from a few days to a month, depending on such factors as climate, crop, and degree of color of the soil. It has been reported that in parts of Russia where the growing season is short, perhaps comparable to that in Pennsylvania and. New York, cotton has been grown successfully on soils originally of light color, but darkened with coal, dusts. The growth of cotton is, accordingly, speeded up a full month. 3/"

Sillimanite, kyanite, and andalusite are aluminum silicates having the same chemical composition (Al2SiO5) and are used in the ceramics industry for the manufacture of high-grade refractories. Natural sillimanite with added corundum or other alumina to just short of mullite (3Al2O3 -2SiO2) proportions is unequalled for jobs wherein strength at high temperatures, resistance to spalling, and resistance to slagging by acid slags are desired. High-grade porcelain ware also requires these minerals. At the same cost, sillimanite would be preferred for most uses, but the lack of any large source of sillimanite bas given economic preference to kyanite or andalusite for special refractories and high-grade porcelain wares. Sillimanite-bearing schists were observed in Spartanburg County, S. C.; as early as 1937 by D. Hoye Eargle, geologist with the U. S. Soil Conservation Service. The mineral was not identified until 1942, when Miss Jewell Glass, of the U. S. Geological Survey, examined several of the deposits. This identification was confirmed in 1943 by Dr. Laurence L. Smith, of the University of South Carolina, when he examined the Spartanburg County deposits and found numerous additional occurrences of sillimanite schist in Greenville County. Subsequent work by the Bureau of Mines and the South Carolina Geological Survey has been responsible for the location of additional sillimanite-rich schist deposits in Spartanburg County. Between October 1, 1948, and November 21, 1948, the Bureau of Mines conducted an exploratory diamond-drilling project on the John Gideon property in the southeastern section of Spartanburg County (fig. 1) and drilled a total of 681.7 feet in six holes. Drilling indicated that the deposit is relatively shallow, as no ore was cut below the zone of weathering.

There have appeared, from time to time, comparisons of various features of coal mining practice in the United States and Great Britain. A recent, article, appearing in a British journal, points out that the American miner produces 3 1/2 times as much coal per shift as the miner, at one-half the cost, and proceeds to explain the natural industrial, and engineering causes which lead to this result. Amon« he reasons advanced. is that the American coal miner enjoys the advantage of more easily worked seams of coal, due to the fact that the coal mining industry in the United States is of more recent date than in Great Britain. The latter qualification is not correct, because where these advantages exist, they will persist. The coal beds of the United States are not buried deeply, except in the remote parts of the country, as in the Uinta Basin of Utah. The article referred to states that many of our miners are still employed on out seams reached by "adits", (which we term entries), or by vertical shafts of moderate depth. It is probable in fact that the great bulk of the coal of the United States is taken out from a depth of less than 400 feet.

The Bureau of Mines smelted samples of chromite ore and concentrate from the General Services Administration (GSA) purchasing depot at Grants Pass, Oreg., in a submerged-arc furnace to establish smelting conditions and the energy requirement to produce high-carbon ferrochromium. Raw material, in the form of ore, flux, and reductant, and electrical energy are available on the Pacific coast to smelt the chromite. The concentrate can be smelted without prior agglomeration by employing hogged wood (wood chips) as a major portion of the reductant. The energy requirement is relatively low, about 3,960 kw.-hr. per ton of alloy. The ferrochromium produced will contain about 60 percent chromium. In addition to the smelting data, a statistical summary of the grade and amount of chromite purchased during the stockpile program and estimated chromite reserves and production volume are given. It is estimated that 632,000 tons of Cr203 contained in chromite of all grades is available in the western coastal States. Of this total there appears to be sufficient metallurgical-grade and beneficiable ore to sustain a smelting operation for 25 years at a consuming rate of 25,000 tons a year, utilizing material comparable to that delivered to the Government stockpile.

The Fischer-Tropsch synthesis is practicable in a reactor where the exothermic heat of reaction is removed by circulating large quantities of recycle gas through a catalyst bed of high-voids content. At an hourly space velocity of 1100, the feed gas, a mixture of 1.5 parts hydrogen to 1 of carbon monoxide, was converted 90 percent, producing hydrocarbons predominantly in the gasoline range. At these conditions a recycle-to-fresh gas ratio of 40:1 was enough to give excellent temperature control with a pressure drop of 1.5 p.s.i. per foot of bed using a steel catalyst in the form of lathe turnings. Steel parallel plates, although offering lower resistance to gasflow, were less reactive and less durable. INTRODUCTION The Federal Bureau of Mines has been engaged in a research and development program since 1944 on the synthesis of gasoline from coal. Gasification of coal with steam and oxygen to yield a synthesis gas--a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen--is being investigated at Morgantown, W. Va.; and the synthesis of gasoline by catalytically reacting the carbon monoxide and hydrogen over iron by the Fischer-Tropsch reaction is being investigated at Bruceton, Pa.

This is the second report to be presented on th application of stress analysis to underground Mining problems. In part I2/ of this investigation the stress distribution around single openings in unidirectional and hydrostatic stress fields was analyzed. Relationships between maximum stress concentration and size and shape of openings were determined by the photoelastic method. In most cases the results were verified by mathematical methods This report considers the stress distribution in pillars formed by two or more openings in a. unidirectional stress field. Relationships between stress concentrations and size and shape of pillars are developed. Applied to mining, results snow how estimates may be made of the stress distribution in pillars, what factors cause high local stresses, and how local stress concentrations may be reduced by proper design of mine openings. The photoelastic method was used, as in Part I, to study the stress distributions, and, whenever possible, the results were verified mathematically. A description of the photoelastic method and equipment is .given in Part I.

This report is one of a series describing investigations by the Federal Bureau of Mines of the performance of various types of coal - cleaning equipment ; other reports in the series are listed in the bibliography . The information in these reports is useful to the coal industry and the manufacturers of coal - cleaning equipment in several ways : First , it assists the coalpreparation engineer who is planning a new plant to select the type of process best suited to the requirements by enabling him to forecast the yield and quality of clean coal obtainable with each type of equipment . Second , the information serves as a yardstick by which the performance of a plant can be judged and thus helps determine whether it is operating at satisfactory efficiency . Both these functions promote better coal - preparation practice ; that is , they help provide coal of more suitable quality for the market and likewise minimize the waste of good coal . This serves the interest of conservation with which the Bureau is vitally concerned . The present report deals with three plants using the Tromp dense - medium process , named after its inventor , K. F. Tromp , who developed the process in the Netherlands in 1936.5/ Selection of this particular dense -medium process for investigation was entirely a matter of convenience , and reports dealing with other dense -medium systems are planned for the future . Two baths are employed in one of the plants investigated . The first of these , handling 6- to 3 - inch coal , exhibited an exceptionally sharp separation between coal and impurity . The U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluated the performance of a catalyzed diesel particulate filter (CDPF) and a CDPF combined with a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) at two metal mines. This report describes the results from the two field evaluations. The CDPF-DOC was installed on a load-haul-dump (LHD) powered by a 175-kW, prechambered, turbocharged engine. This system reduced diesel particulate matter (DPM) concentrations by 71±28 pet, as determined by size-selective sampling with gravimetric analysis, and by 71±29 pet, as determined by respirable combustible dust (RCD) analysis at the vehicle operator's location. The CDPF was installed on a diesel-hydraulic, roof-bolting jumbo, powered by a 172-kW engine. The CDPF reduced DPM concentrations by 72±21 pet, as determined by size-selective sampling with gravimetric analysis, and by 62±25 pet, as determined by RCD analysis at the vehicle operator's location. Underground evaluation was more difficult because of frequent movement by the roof-bolting jumbo, variation in daily workload, tremendous fluctuation in ventilation airflow rates, and use of a high sulfur diesel fuel, which promotes the formation of sulfate particles, decreases filtration efficiency, and hastens the deterioration of the catalyst.

The purpose of this research was to develop a method to remove copper and tin from the magnetic fraction of incinerated municipal refuse, as recovered by the Bureau of Mines pilot plant in College Park, Md. Copper, present in the scrap in a metallic form bonded to ferrous objects, was amenable to leaching in cupric ammonium carbonate solution. Copper levels in small 5-to 10-lb lots of treated scrap were reduced from the initial level, 0.5 to 0.6 pct, to 0.1 to 0.2 pct. Larger lots of scrap (100 lb) were treated less effectively because of poor contact of solution and scrap. Oxidation in the air or in aerated aqueous solution was applied to liberate tin from the dilute solid solution present on the surface of incinerated tinplate. Shredding of air-oxidized scrap or caustic leaching of scrap oxidized in solution reduced tin levels from the initial 0.25-pct level to about 0.1 pct.

Coal-bearing beds underlie 23,000 square miles, about one third of Missouri's total area. Twelve out of more than twenty named coal seams have been or are being commercially mined. The remainder are too thin for commercial production. The coal is high volatile bituminous, with reserves estimated to be six billion tons, 1.24percent of U.S. coal reserves. Coal-bearing strata are generally thin seams which can be up to five feet thick. Typically, mined seams are about 28 inches thick. Coal deposits were first mined in Missouri in the 1840s, with the coal used primarily for domestic heating and blacksmithing. Production increased with the introduction of steamboats on the Mississippi. Coal production in 19 17 was six million tons. Production has steadily declined from a high of nearly seven million tons in 1984 to 2.3 million tons in 1991. Declining production is the result of several factors, including competition from other energy sources and the high sulfur content of Missouri coal. Today, coal-fired electric generating plants are the biggest consumers of Missouri coal. The Missouri regulatory program was conditionally approved November 21,1980, and fully approved January 17,1983. Its Abandoned Mine Land program was approved January 29, 1982.
