The Bureau of Mines conducted pressure-drop studies in a 4-foot-diameter simulated blast furnace shaft to compare anthracite metallurgical briquets with coke and formcoke. The test materials were used alone, layered, and in mixed burdens of commercial fuel-to-ore ratios. Anthracite briquets had a higher pressure drop per foot than furnace coke, but they had a lower pressure drop per foot than formcoke. This appears to be due to packing and shape, as well as to particle size. The superficial air velocities at which beds of briquets and furnace coke disrupted were about the same. However, if briquets of the shapes and sizes tested are substituted for furnace coke in commercial metallurgical furnaces, higher blowing pressures will be required to deliver comparable amounts of air. Test burdens with more than 5 percent material smaller than 1/4-inch diameter showed significant increases in resistance to airflow.

High-purity lanthanum metal was prepared by electrolysis of La003 in a LaF3-LiF-BaF2 bath at 950° C. The requisite bath temperature for the deposition of molten metal was maintained by supplying the heat as current directly to the electrodes. A current efficiency of about 60 percent was obtained. The lanthanum nodules contained carbon and oxygen as major impurities. The total impurity content was from about 0.1 to 0.2 percent.

This volume describes software developed for programmable calculators that is useful in the analysis and design of mine electrical power systems. The programs are equally useful for any industrial or commercial power system. All programs are written for both the HP-97 and the TI-59 programmable calculators. Listings of both versions of the twelve programs that were developed appear in the report. The programs that were developed can be broken into two groups. The first group encompasses design-oriented programs. The second group encompasses analysis programs. For each program the following items are provided: a description of the program's capabilities, the solution technique used, instructions on how to use the program, a worked out example with data and results and, finally, listings of the programs for the HP-97 and TI-59 programmable calculators. Typical problems that can be attacked with these programs include ground bed design, selection of contactor size, fuse size, relay settings, instantaneous overcurrent trip settings for trailing cables, allowable cyclic cable loading, short circuit analyses, prediction of transient voltages and others.

Coal has been hydrogenated in Germany on a lather extensive scale for the past 20 years, but the process is new to the United States. Although pressures up to 15,000 pounds per square inch have been employed on commercial scale in the synthesis of anhydrous ammonia, and there is evidence that valves, tubing, and equipment have been developed recently up to 30,000 p.s.i. working pressure at moderately elevated temperatures for limited industrial production of plastics, such pressure ranges are unusual in American industry, and equipment designed for them is not commonly available. In the Coal Hydrogenation Demonstration Plant at Louisiana, Mo., 10,000 p.s.i. operating pressures are combined with temperatures up to 1,000° F., and the materials to be processed under these conditions range from gases to mixtures of viscous liquids containing high percentages of abrasive solid particles. These service conditions presented unusual engineering problems requiring thorough investigation, Limited financial resources arid rigid time schedules inherent in the synthetic liquid fuels act often forced decisions before the best answer to a problem could be developed. Sometimes the ideal technical solution proved to be beyond the financial limitations of the demonstration-plant program.

The land-pebble district of Florida, wnich in 1928 supplied 96.7 per cent of the phosphate production of that State and 82 per cent of the domestic requirements of the United States, is centered in Polk and Hillsboro Counties about 30 miles east of Tampa The deposits are unconsolidated sediments occurring as beds of phosphate matrix overlain by a mantle of barren sands and clays. The matrix consists of a mixture of sand (quartz grains), clay, and phosphate rock in which the coarsest sand is much finer than the coarsest phosphate; that is, the sand is segregated in the fine material. Before the introduction of classifiers the concentration consisted of log washing, and screening at about 20-mesh, which was usually the finest size that could be taken to maintain commercial grade, 66 per cent B. P. L. (bone phosphate of lime) or more. When classifiers were introduced some of the fines that had escaped at the head of the washery and some of the minus 20-mesh material isolated during the washing and formerly lost supplied the feed. During October, 1927, the United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the University of Alabama and the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy began to investigate the amenability of phosphatic sands to gravity methods of concentration. The work was under the immediate supervision of B. W. Gandrud, acting supervising engineer of the Southern Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines at Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Will H. Coghill, supervising engineer of the ore dressing section of the U. S. Bureau of Mines. More comprehensive testing followed and in the early part of 1930 some of the companies cooperated with the bureau and the above-mentioned institutions in conducting a series of tests on hydraulic classification and tabling. The results indicated that marketable concentrates could be obtained with a recovery of 25 to 45 per cent of the phosphate formerly lost. As a result two companies have introduced hydraulic classification to treat the current tailings, and one of them has substituted classifiers for the 20-mesh screens which had been unsatisfactory. Because the phosphate grains and quartz grains have nearly the same specific gravity, the use of concentrating tables by the customary methods is not applicable. The washeries included in the following report are designated as Nos. 1, 2, and 3.

An evaluation is presented for a process designed , on the basis of published work , to extract alumina as potassium alum from clay using sulfuric acid and potassium sulfate . The silica residue is separated by filtration . Ferric iron is reduced to ferrous iron , and the alum is crystallized from the solution , leaving the ferrous iron in solution . The alum crystals are separated from the solution and redissolved for feed to autoclave decomposition . In an autoclave the alum is partly decomposed to a basic alum , recovering five - ninths of the sulfuric acid and two - thirds of the potassium sulfate without using an acid plant . The basic alum is decomposed by calcining , and the potassium sulfate is then removed by washing with water . Operating costs for a plant producing 1,000 tons of alumina a day are estimated at $ 96.15 per ton of alumina . The fixed capital cost is estimated at $ 155 million . This process is not competitive under current economic conditions with the production of alumina from bauxite by the Bayer process . Improvement in leaching , basic alum decomposition , and washing could reduce the costs and improve the product which contains some potassium .

Anticipating the availability of space-altitude imagery from the Earth Resource Technology Satellites (ERTS), the Bureau of Mines investigated the possibilities of using suck imagery in its activities in solid waste disposal, reclamation of mine workings, and mineral resource inventory. The study indicates that monitoring open pit and strip-mining operations can be done using conventional techniques if the sharpness of the imagery is sufficiently high. Possibilities also exist for semi-automated processes for change detection. Additional experimentation is needed for multispectral discrimination and identification of mine-related phenomena.

This paper , which describes mining methods and practices at the Mineral Hill copper mine , is one of a series being prepared by the Division of Minerals of the Bureau of Mines on mining methods , practices , and costs in various mining districts. of the United States . The Mineral Hill mine is situated on the northeastern piedmont of the Sierrita Mountains at an altitude of 3,650 feet in sec . 35 , T. 16 S. , R. 12 E. , and sec . 2 , T. 17 S. , R. 12 E. , Pima mining district , Pima County , Ariz . ( fig . 1 ) . The claims (figs . 2 and 3) are in a gently rolling area with only scant desert vegetation . The average annual precipitation is about 11 inches . The nearest surface water is the Santa Cruz River , an intermittent stream 8 miles east of the mine . The property is owned by the Banner Mining Co. , a Nevada corporation . This report presents a brief history of the mine , describes the geology of the area and the ore deposits , outlines methods of prospecting and exploration , and gives methods of sampling and the estimation of ore reserves and values . Development and stoping methods are explained , and methods of underground transportation , ventilation , mine drainage , and safety measures are described . The concluding section of the paper is a section on milling . The Mineral Hill mine is an old mine that was reopened in 1951 after having been closed for 30 years .

This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States was made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. By agreement with the American Petroleum Institute, identification of the items is confidential. It presents analytical data for 4,857 samples, representing the products of 103 companies. The samples were collected during June, July, and August 1955. As in previous surveys, the gasolines covered by this survey include those from both large and small suppliers. The data were obtained by laboratories of various refiners, motor manufacturers, and chemical companies and submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. A list of the National Motor Gasoline Survey reports published during the past 10 years is given on page 5.

Low-temperature heat capacities of chiolite (Na5Al3F14) were determined by adiabatic calorimetry in the temperature range 5.8 to 300 K. The derived standard entropy (S°, 298.15) was 115.6 ± 0.2 cal/deg-mole. High temperature enthalpies relative to 298.15 K were obtained by precision drop calorimetry up to 1,000 K. Tables of experimental data and related thermodynamic functions are given for the temperature range of experimental observations.

This report summarizes the results of a preliminary study concerning manganese extraction from low-grade dolomitic materials from the Philipsburg district in Montana by the Dean-Leute ammonium carbamate process. Studies were made to determine the relationship between the variables involved in treating these materials by a roast-leach process and the amount of manganese extracted. The variables studied were the roast temperature, the roast particle size, the molar ratio of NH3 to CO2 in the leach solution, the liquid-solid ratio in leaching, the leach time, and the size of the particles being leached. The roast-leach studies were statistically designed, and the experimental results were evaluated by an analysis of variance.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is developing a process for removing metals from mining and mineral processing waste streams by precipitation. The precipitation process is accelerated by flocculation when a high molecular weight polymer is added. Infrared (IR) studies were performed on zinc hydroxide [Zn(OH);J, copper hydroxide [Cu(OH);J, and zinc sulfide (ZnS) flocculated with both non ionic and anionic polyacrylamide (PAM) and polyethylene oxide (PEO). The IR data were compared with general trends in the performance of the polymers observed during flocculation. These studies will help to understand the bonding between the precipitate and polymer and indicate the effectiveness of a flocculant for dewatering. Two types of bands showed up on the IR spectra; one type described the interlayer water of the flocs, the other described the organic bonds of the polymers. A general decrease in the areas of the three water bands, hydroxyl (O-H) stretching (3,200-3,500 cm-1), water bending (1,610-1,630 cm-1), and torsional oscillations (600-700 cm-1), indicate interlayer water being driven off, which is a favorable condition in flocculation. Shifts in the O-H stretching band indicate water bridging between the precipitate and polymer. Shifts in the amine (N-H) deformation, carbon-nitrogen (C-N) stretch band (1,600-1,610 cm-1) indicate the amine group of the PAM is involved in the bonding. Evidence suggests that ether oxygen of PEO is also involved in the bonding process.

This study estimates capital investment, operating costs, and selling prices for four underground bituminous mines producing coal with annual production ranging from 1.06 to 4.99 million tons. It is assumed that the mines have a 20-year life. Wages and union welfare payments are considered as of December 6, 1974, under the Bituminous Wage Agreement of 1974, and costs for material and equipment are based on 1975 indexes. Initial capital investment ranges from $23,629,500 for the 1; 06- million-ton-per-year (MM tpy) mine to $79,907,500 for the 4.99-MM-tpy mine. Total capital investment ranges from $35,336,500 to $1 18,863,500 for the same mines. Corresponding selling prices for the coal range from $13.57 to $11.36 per ton, assuming a 15-percent discounted cash flow rate of return after Federal income taxes.

A list of permissible mine equipment approved by the Bureau of Mines before January 1, 1937, was published in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6942.3/ Information Circular 7007,4/ published as a supplement thereto, listed equipment approved. Burin', the calendar year 1937. The present list includes most of the material liven in these two publications, as well as approvals that have been issued up to January l, 1940. Some equipment formerly listed has been omitted because it has become obsolete or is no longer actively marketed. The list now includes electrically-operated air compressors, coal drills, loading machines and conveyors, mining machine, mine ones, rock-dusting machines, room hoists, storage-battery gathering and haulage locomotives and storage-battery power trucks, mine telephones, junction boxes, electric cap lamps, flame safety lamps, electric hand and trip lamps, electric flood lens, flashlights, methane detectors, and single and multiple-shot blasting units. The appendix at the end of this circular lists trailing, cables that have passed tests prescribed by Schedule 2D. When equipment passes the inspections and tests prescribed by the United Status Department of the interior, Bureau of Mines, in published "schedules" or standards, it is formally approved as "permissible" for use in gassy mines, and the manufacturer is then permitted to mark it with an approval plate that identifies it as having been approved by the Bureau. The inspections and tests are designed to insure that each equipment satisfies the minimum requirements for safety in use. A prototype borehole probe for ore grade determinations by means of in-situ neutron activation analysis was designed, built, and tested in a two-phase program. Phase I dealt with the design and fabrication of a borehole logging system for operation in 7.6 cm (3 in.) diameter or larger boreholes. It consisted of a 5.06 cm (2 in.) diameter borehole probe containing an intrinsic germanium detector, a canister-type solid cryogen cooling system, cooled FET preamplifier, linear amplifier, high voltage supply, analog-to-digital converter, microprocessor-based multichannel analyzer, buffer memory, bi-directional cable link, power supplies, and a Californium-252 neutron source. A surface support vehicle was designed and outfitted. A minicomputer system was constructed and software developed and tested. In Phase II the system was field tested at several mine sites. The system was calibrated, tested, improved, and demonstrated in a variety of applications. Tests were performed at sites pertinent to uranium, iron, coal, copper, silver and gold. Technical feasibility was demonstrated for all these applications except gold; the gold results were inconclusive. In-situ neutron activation analysis using high resolution gamma ray spectrometry was found to be a potentially viable logging method for are grade analysis under certain conditions.

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the ash-softening temperature, the free-swelling index, and the Hardgrove grind-ability index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions4 issued by the Bureau of Mines; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor; if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.

Data obtained by the Federal Bureau of Mines on the dust explosion hazard in air are presented for 220 samples of agricultural products. Information is given on ignition temperature of dust clouds and layers, minimum explosive concentration, minimum electrical energy for ignition, explosion pressure and rates of pressure rise, amount of inert dust required to prevent flame propagation, and, in a few instances, the permissible oxygen concentration in an atmosphere to prevent ignition by spark and by heated surface. The effects of particle size and source of sample on explosibility are shown. The relative ignition sensitivity, severity of explosion, and overall explosibility of the materials are characterized by empirical indexes. This report contains Ma obtained by the Bureau in laboratory studies on the explosion hazards of agricultural dusts. Recognition of the dangers will encourage adoption of adequate measures to prevent ignition and explosion during preparation, processing, and utilization of the materials. Agricultural products constitute one of the largest groups of materials used in America. Sodium aluminate is the principal aluminum compound formed in the sinters prepared by the lime - soda sinter process for recovering aluminum from silicate source materials . The properties and characteristics of this compound were studied to improve the efficiency of the process . Crystalline sodium aluminate was prepared by sintering stoichiometric quantities of soda ash and calcined alumina for 1 hour at 1,250 ° C. The extent of aluminum extraction from sodium aluminate was determined in water and in solutions of NaOH and Na₂ CO3 . Nearly complete extraction of aluminum from sodium aluminate was achieved only in solutions containing free NaOH in excess of that supplied by the salt through hydrolysis . About 42.2 to 68.8 percent of the aluminum was extracted in water or in solutions of Na₂ CO . The precipitation of alumina trihydrate from sodium aluminate solutions was shown to be part of a continuous , reversible reaction according to the equation Al (OH ) A1 (OH )3 + OHThe reverse reaction dissolves alumina trihydrate in NaOH solutions to produce sodium aluminate . Approximate equilibrium concentrations were determined for the reaction at 30° , 50 ° , and 70 ° C. False apparent equilibrium conditions for the dissolution reaction appear when only a small excess of alumina trihydrate is present in the NaOH solutions . A large excess of alumina trihydrate must be present before the true equilibrium point is assured . The engineering significance of the data is summarized , showing controls that should be exercised for a successful and efficient process .

Coalbeds exhibit a directional permeability, with the maximum permeability oriented parallel to the face cleat. Thus, the most efficient pattern of vertical degasification holes for a coalbed is dependent upon cleat orientation. Surface joints, infrared photolinears, and Ronchi grating photolinears were investigated as potential estimators of subsurface cleat orientation. Cleat orientations were masured in 18 mines, in the Pittsburgh coalbed in southwestern Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia to be used as a standard against which prediction techniques would be evaluated. Two cleat systems with a strong geographic segregation were measured in the study area: N 67° W - N 28° E (95° separation) for the north, and N 76° W - N 17° E (93° separation) for the south. Directional data obtained from the three techniques investigated yielded satisfactory regional predictions of cleat orientation. Analysis of surface joints was the only technique considered sufficiently reliable on a local basis. Prediction of cleat orientation is based on the pairing of the principal directional sets into all reasonable combinations of fundamental systems. The system or systems composed of the most dominant sets nearest to 90° separation are likely to be a reliable prediction of cleat orientation. The most dominant set of the system selected is likely to be the face cleat.
