[Experimental studies were made to develop a laboratory technique for direct removal of cadmium and germanium from sphalerite concentrates. Cadmium- and germanium-bearing concentrates from the Illinois-Kentucky fluorspar field were sound to be, amenable to an inert atmosphere fuming process for removing these two moats in the form of gaseous sulfides. Treating the condensed fume by pyrometallurgical methods upgraded the material end provided a means of partly separating the constituents. Cadmium was concentrated about 35:1 arid germanium about 300:1. The extractive investigations were supplemented by vapor-pressure studies on the sulfides of germanium to obtain fundamental data for larger scale laboratory conditioning and control when treating the zinc concentrates. Vapor-pressure curves were developed for synthesized monosulfide and disulfide The results of these- investigations indicate the possibility of significantly increasing the recovery of cadmium from zinc concentrates. Comparison with present recovery of germanium cannot be made, since commercial recovery data arc not available.]

A NEW record was set for helium shipment in 1962 for the 13th successive year. For the first time since 1949, the production of helium from natural gas at Bureau of Mines plants was less than in the previous year. The Bureau shipped 599.5 million cubic feet, 9 percent more than the 1961 volume, and produced 680.9 million cubic feet-a decrease of 6 percent from the record set in 1961. The Bureau added 77.2 million cubic feet to the volume stored for future use. Of the total 524.6 million cubic feet in storage, 522.4 million cubic feet is accumulated excess production from Bureau of Mines plants. The remaining 2.2 million cubic feet was purchased during 1962 from industry under the helium conservation program. The first two of five private plants began production in December to recover helium for conservation storage and ultimate use. A 425-mile pipeline system to transport helium from the five private plants to the Cliffside field was constructed by the Bureau at a cost of about $8 million.

The Bureau of Mines studied the potential for recovering marketable barite concentrates that meet oil well drilling-mud specifications from barite waste pond materials. The study was conducted as part of the Bureau's research program to conserve domestic mineral resources by advancing mineral recycling technology. The samples, which were obtained from Georgia, Nevada, Missouri, and Illinois, varied widely in character, particle size, and barite content. The samples were treated with sodium silicate and sodium cetyl-stearyl sulfate and then floated. The flotation flow sheet was modified to reject barren coarse and/or slime fractions from some of the samples, and one feed sample had to be scrubbed prior to flotation to remove residual flotation reagents. The cleaned concentrates had BaS04 contents ranging from 95.0 to 96.9 percent, while recovering 81.2 to 95.9 percent of the barite in the feed. The specific gravity of each concentrate exceeded the specification of 4.2. The removal of the flotation reagents from the flotation concentrate was not investigated.

The Bureau of Mines prepared submicron tungsten powder by reducing tungsten hexachloride with hydrogen. The particle diameters of the resulting tungsten powders ranged from 0.015 to 0.046 micron. Within the limits of the variables investigated, no clear-cut correlation was found between process conditions and final size of the powder. Oxygen was the major contaminant in the product; being present both as an adsorbed gas and as suboxides of tungsten. Studies showed that the powder yielded compacts of approximately 45 per-cent of theoretical density when compacted mechanically. Low-temperature sintering produced more rapid densification in these compacts than in compacts prepared from conventional powders. Adding up to 20 percent ultrafine powder to conventional tungsten powder caused an increase in density upon compaction with maximum densification occurring at approximately 12 percent ultrafine powder.

Laboratory experiments were conducted to study the carbon deposition characteristics of a high-gravity, paraffin-base crude oil. The results of these experiments indicate that a fuel supply adequate to initiate a combustion wave can be deposited in high-gravity-oil reservoirs. These results are significant because there has been considerable doubt whether oils over 35° API gravity are able to deposit sufficient fuel. Considered in these studies were the effects of air flux, temperature, initial oil saturation, and time on carbon deposition. Conditions that maximized carbon deposition in the laboratory and an understanding of the nature of carbon formation are shown by graphical interpretation of the data. Statistical techniques were used to design and analyze the results of the retort tests. For the same amount of laboratory work, this approach yields more information about the systems that were studied than the classical method of research presently used in many laboratories. In addition, the accuracy of calculating the effect of each variable on carbon deposition is twice that of the classical approach. This paper develops the statistical approach to research without complex mathematics, thus enabling the reader to grasp the concept of how statistics can be applied to study many complicated problems.

The Bureau of Mines undertook a theoretical and laboratory study to determine the feasibility of using ethylene as a tracer for natural gas in underground gas-storage reservoirs. The study indicated that ethylene was a useful gas tracer in underground gas storages. Tracer losses were not excessive. Laboratory tests were conducted at pressures as high as 500 psia in both wet and dry consolidated-sandstone cores, evaluating tracer loss with gas blends containing natural gas with different concentrations of ethylene tracer. Under certain conditions losses were less than 17 percent.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has established a method for the calibration of class 2 and class 4 standards of mass using a procedure from designs developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). This method produces a weight calibration that is within 1.0 pct of the balance sensitivity. A set of four 1-kg weights yielded a standard deviation of 3.25 mg compared to ±2.91 mg balance sensitivity. The method employs the use of a high-accuracy balance to measure the difference between a set of weights calibrated by NIST and the set to be calibrated. The error of the balance is included in the error for each weight calibrated.

"The Union Copper mine is in the Gold Hill district, Rowan and Cabarrus Counties, N. C.The mine was discovered in 1799 and first worked as a gold mine; but copper was encountered at depth, and the property became an important producer of copper. It is estimated that the mine produced 5,000,000 pounds of copper before operations were discontinued in 1907.As part of the strategic minerals program, the Bureau of Mines conducted a development project on the property from July 1943 to November 1943. Eight diamond-drill holes, totaling 2,500 linear feet, were drilled to delineate the ore body. Analyses of 205 core samples were made.Tabulations of sample analyses and drill-hole logs are presented in this report.The project work embodied in this report was under the immediate supervision of Austin B. Clayton, project engineer, and the general supervision of H. B. Ewoldt, district engineer for North Carolina and Tennessee. The preliminary report, written by Austin B. Clayton, was revised and the various figures redrawn for publication by T. J. Ballard under the general supervision of M. H. Kline, chief, Raleigh Branch, Mining Division.Acknowledgment is due the Metallurgical Branch for analytical determinations of the samples.The mine property is 1.5 miles southwest of the village of Gold. The upper parts of the veins in the district were first worked for gold; however, the increase in the sulfide content of the veins with depth rendered the amalgamation process for gold recovery ineffective, and the mines were closed.The period of greatest activity at the Union Copper mine was from 1899 to 1906. At an earlier period the oxidized and leached part of the lode near the surface was mined from a working known as the ""big cut,"" the reported yield of which was $300,000 in gold.3/ The mine has not been operated since 1907.J. T. Pardee3/ lists the probable value of the production of the Union Copper mine as $1,050,000, of which about $675,000 was the value of some 5,000,000 pounds of copper produced."

Demand for energy in the United States in 1965 was stimulated by the continuing expansion of the economy. A gain of 5.9 percent in gross national product for the year was accompanied by a 4.4-percent rise in energy consumption. Domestic energy resources met about 93 percent of the nation's requirements. The remaining 7 percent consisted of imported fuels, mainly of crude petroleum and residual fuel oil. The major fossil fuels-natural gas, crude petroleum, and coal, in that order-contributed 96 percent of all commerical energy utilized, with the balance of 4 percent being primary electricity from hydropower and nuclear power plants. Production was up for all of the major mineral energy resources in 1965, with the single exception of anthracite, output of which continued to decline. Bituminous coal output for the year was 512 million tons; marketed production of natural gas, 16,039 billion cubic feet; and crude petroleum output, 2,848 million barrels. Among the secondary products processed from primary energy resources, the most significant gains were in coal carbonized for coke which increased 6.7 percent to 95 million tons, and in the output of liquefied gases from natural gas which rose 4.8 percent to 11,257 million gallons (268 million barrels). Within the latter category, the off? take for petrochemical feedstocks continued to rise at a very rapid pace.

GENERAL INFORMATIONSince its introduction into coal mines, the use of Airdox has grown in popularity, especially in the Indiana and Illinois coal fields. Its use permits breaking dawn coal on shift, whereas the use of explosives for blasting coal on shift is prohibited by law in those States. Many of the hazards connected with the use of explosives are eliminated. The accident experience in the use of Airdox has been excellent with respect to the number of fatalities or serious injuries per million tons mined.The Federal Mine Safety Code specifies that Airdox lines should be grounded at the compressor and at other points of low resistance along the lines but should not be connected to tracks, pipe lines, or other possible power conductors. A system capable of monitoring a mine electrical power system to detect incipient electrical component failure could significantly improve power system safety and availability. The U.S. Bureau of Mines funded a contract with The Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) to establish the theoretical and technical framework for such a system. This report briefly outlines the contract, reviewing related Bureau and Penn State work prior to its award, and describes support work carried out by the Bureau. The main focus of the report is on research efforts by Penn State and subsequent results. An existing algorithm for incipient-failure detection and classification was studied, and recommendations are made to improve its performance. In addition, mathematical models of cable-connected motor systems and deteriorating motors were developed and implemented on computers. These models and laboratory tests were used to study and document relationships between component deterioration and electrical terminal effects. The project was supported by the U.S. Navy and the nature of its interest in the application of failure prediction techniques is also included.

Although the hysteria. with regard to silicosis end other occupational diseases seems largely to haws passed, and more careful sober consideration is being given this subject, it would be very poor policy for any employer to take the stand that the storm has blown over and that he can safely relax and revert to the status of 5, 10, or more years ago in such matters. The real fact is that occupational-disease compensation is nor in its infancy and can be expected to grow by leaps and bounds. At present, while 46 States of the Union3/ and the District of Columbia have compensation acts, only the following have some fern of occupational-disease legislation: California, Delaware, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Illinois, India a, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rode Island, Washington, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. Silicosis appears to be compensable under those acts in California, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Illinois, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Wisconsin; possibly it may be interpreted as compensable in others. Occupational-disease legislation (largely relating to silicosis) has seen under consideration in some form relatively recently in Arkansas, California, Delaware, Idaho, Maryland, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah, and. Washington at least. It will be surprising if comparatively broad or inclusive occupational-disease legislation will not be on the statute books of nearly every State in the Union within the next 5 years. With this situation confronting him, the far-sighted industrialist who has the best interests of his organization at heart will immediately begin to "put his house in order," if he has not already done so, by studying possible occupational-disease hazards to his employees; moreover, he will promptly apply all known remedial measures or will attempt to devise such measures if none of those already devised seem to apply to his establishment.

The United States has not begun commercial operations to tap its largest poten-tial sources of oil supply - oil shale and coal. The reason is that domestic petrol-eum has been plentiful in the past and liquid products probably could be produced from it at the lowest cost. In view of the ever-increasing need for petroleum in the United States, the critical international situation threatening foreign supplies, the growing demands for steel, and the heavy costs to industry of constantly discovering and developing new oil fields, it is believed that the prompt development of a synthetic fuel industry based on oil shale and coal is not only requisite to safeguard our oil supply but is an economically sound course for the foreseeable future, To neglect its development is to close our eyes and minds to our own resources at a time when they are needed critically. It also is apparent now that neither the Government nor industry would be taking any considerable economic risk in starting the initial plants, especially as measured against their potential value in meeting critical oil and chemical demands and in building a new industry in the West.

Two problems perplex many coal-mine operators and employees. Is coal-mine dust harmful to breathe; and, if so, is it possible to keep the concentration below the danger point? The medical profession is not unanimous in its opinion of the danger of breathing bituminous-coal dust, but there appears to be ample and increasing evidence that coal-mine dust can be harmful if breathed in large enough doses for long periods. The question of controlling the dust at the point of formation is still unanswered in the minds of many in the mining industry. However, results of limited studies conducted by the Bureau of Mines in 9 bituminous-coal mines indicate that a full-shift average exposure of workers should not exceed about 20 million dust particles per cubic foot of air (m.p.p.c.f.) and that concentrations can be held within this limit without too much difficulty. Furthermore, these studies indicated that an exposure in the neighborhood of 40 m.p.p.c.f. should not be exceeded for an individual operation and that it is possible to hold within this ceiling.

Surface mining drastically alters the ecological characteristics of the area disturbed and in some cases has a decided effect on surrounding areas. Vegetation is removed, topographic features and characteristics are changed, and the original geologic overburden profiles are destroyed. Spoil banks generally are a heterogeneous mixture of rock fragments, rock particles, and soil-sized material derived from the overburden strata. With proper mining techniques, the various strata can be partially or completely segregated. Segregation of over- burden material offers the opportunity to bury the toxic, acid, or salt-pro producing strata under growth supporting material. In some situations, lower strata may have more desirable characteristics than surface material and can be placed near or on the surface. For example, limestone strata appear in some lower overburden profiles that have shale and/or sandstone near the surface. Also, some lower strata have higher nutrient levels that have been leached from the surface. Experience has shown that natural revegetation is a very slow process on strip mined areas. Native vegetation may not be compatible with the environment on the mined areas, for example : 1. Low nutrients in the spoil. 2. Toxic spoils (very acid or highly alkaline ). 3. Surrounding vegetation may be of the climax type and may not have pioneer- or primary-invader-type species present. 4. The seed source may be to far away from the adjacent mined areas. Early attempts to revegetate strip-mined lands with trees also proved to be unsatisfactory as they did not provide the initial ground cover required to stabilize the spoil. Erosion control with trees only may take up to 10 years before the canopies close and an effective cover is established. They are slow to form soil profiles and do not provide effective chemical pollution control until long after planting. A quick growing cover of herbaceous species is necessary to obtain quick stabilization and initial protection against erosion by reducing runoff and rain-drop splash. In recent years the rapid depletion of high-grade iron ores and the demand by blast furnace operators for increasingly low-silica ores have stimulated interest in flotation studies of low-grade iron ores, such as wash-ore tailings and oxidized taconites. Four processes have been reported for the flotation separation of these iron ores--anionic and cationic collection of the iron oxides, cationic collection of siliceous gangue, and anionic collection of activated siliceous gangue (5).5/ The effectiveness of any one method, however, depends largely on the mineralogical composition and on the physical structure of the sample; hence, a comprehensive study of the floatability of the individual minerals occurring in these materials is essential. A review of the literature shows that the floatability of hematite and magnetite has been frequently investigated, whereas very little corresponding information is available for goethite, or for its more earthy form, limonite, both of which are abundant in the Mesabi and Cuyuna ores (19). The purpose of this investigation was to formulate general information on the floatability of goethite. Vacuum flotation, contact angle measurement, and simplified flotation tests using a modified Hallimond tube were used. The experimental results were correlated with the electrokinetic properties of goethite as determined by streaming potential measurement. The results were used to interpret the batch flotation tests made on an artificial mixture of quartz and goethite.

The Greenburg-Smith impinger was developed at the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the United States Public Health Service in 1922 in the course of an investigation of dust-sampling instruments available at that time. Although it is not used extensively outside of the United States, it is now soused in this country to collect samples for the determination of any dustiness, and most of the information correlating degree of dustiness with physiological effect has been obtained by the impinger method. The chief disadvantages in the use of the regular impinger, especially in mines and other places accessible with difficulty, are its bulk weight, and power requirements. It requires a source either of electricity or of compressed air, which necessitates connections and extension of existing supply lines to each sampling point; the only alternative is the use of a relatively large pump hand-operated with considerable effort.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) classifies hearing loss as a separate illness category. Hearing loss accounted for 11% of all illnesses in 2005 (U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2006a). According to occupational data for coal mining provided by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) from 2000 to 2005, operators that exceeded 100% noise dosage were from only seven types of machines: auger miners, bulldozers, continuous mining machines, front end loaders, roof bolters, shuttle cars (electric) and trucks (Title 30 CFR Part 62, 2000-2005). Roof bolting machine operators rank second among all underground machine operators that exceed 100% noise dose. In extracting helium from natural gas at Bureau of Mines helium plants, a continuous analysis of the helium content of inlet and outlet gas streams is required to determine extraction efficiency. An analyzer, using established principles of gas chromatography to effect the analysis, has been developed by the Bureau of Mines to meet this need. It will record the helium content of inlet or discharge gases from helium-extraction plants every five minutes, continuously, without the attendance of an operator. A 25-inch column of activated charcoal is used as a partitioning agent; nitrogen is the carrier gas; and a hot-wire, thermal-conductivity cell is the detector. A 1.0 mv, strip chart indicates the unbalance of the detector cell, Sample size is 0.37 cc, and carrier gas flow rate is 75 cc, per minute. Significant improvements in helium extraction have been demonstrated by using the chromatograph in three helium-extraction plants.

This paper describing the methods employed in the purchasing and supply departments of the Miami Copper Co., Miami, Ariz., is one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines on office practice in mining operations. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Miami Copper Co.'s plant is located about 1 mile from the town of Miami, in the Globe-Miami Mining District, Gila County, Ariz. The property consists of a complete mining plant, concentrator, high-pressure steam power plant, and many other attendant structures. In normal times the company employs about 1,500 men, and mines and mills about 6,000,000 tons of ore annually.
