The Bureau of Mines is cooperating with the U.S. Department of Energy in a directional degasification project at the Emerald mine near Waynesburg, Pa. This project is designed to combine the highly successful underground horizontal degasification technology with surface drilling methods. The objective of this program is to demonstrate that directional drilling can be used as a technique for degasifying coalbeds ahead of mining to reduce the hazards of methane-air explosions in coal mines. The directional hole at the Emerald mine is designed to start vertically and enter the Pittsburgh coalbed horizontally. A 3-inch-pilot hole entered the Pittsburgh coalbecl at a vertical depth of 999 feet, The hole will be reamed to 8-3/4 inches in diameter, and 5-1/2-inch casing will be cemented in place. Three individual 3-inch-diameter, 3,000-foot horizontal gas collection holes will be drilled into the coalbed in a “bird foot” pattern. A corehole and vertical dewatering hole have been completed at the anticipated coalbed intercept. The dewatering hole was drilled to130 feet below the Pittsburgh coalbed, a depth of 900 feet, and 880 feet of 7-inch-OD casing was cemented in place. Seven vertical holes for monitoring the extent and progress of degasification have been drilled within the horizontal drilling area.

In laboratory tests using reconstructed soil columns, rubber latex showed good sealing efficiency when applied at a rate equivalent to 4000-5000 pounds per acre. Results of field testing, however, were inconclusive. The ideal situation in which latex would coagulate in a narrow zone two to three feet below the surface by reacting with acidic or metallic constituents of the soil was not attained. Rather, the latex was deposited progressively as it passed through the soil (most of it remained in the top foot), the rate of deposition being dependent on soil structure and composition as well as on properties of the latex such as particle size and emulsion stability. Latex stability appears to be a more critical property than latex particle size in controlling penetration. Addition of excess anionic or nonionic surfactants to latex improved its penetration into the soil. A styrene-butadiene (SBR) rubber latex of 2400 Å average particle size with high mechanical stability gave the best balance of penetrating ability and sealing capacity in laboratory tests and this was confirmed in tests on a 5 x 5 foot test plot at Lanse, Pennsylvania. This latex was subsequently applied to three one-quarter-acre plots at Lanse by sprinkler irrigation, and compared to adjacent areas that were sprinkled with water only. Soil moisture measurements did not enable us to judge the effectiveness of the seal because differences between sampling positions were greater than differences between treated and untreated sections, but permeability tests showed that water flow was much slower (90-99% reduction) within the top ten inches of soil in the latex- treated sections. This sealing effectiveness was reduced after wintering. There was no deleterious effect on the vegetation as a result of sprinkling the areas with latex. A laboratory study conducted in a 5 x 5 x 5 foot box containing uniform reconstructed soil from a New Jersey source suggests that latex penetration into the soil in the field occurs mainly through natural macro openings and not through the capillaries of the soil structure. Dilute solutions of ammonium hydroxide or sodium carbonate (with no latex present) were found to seal effectively in laboratory soil columns as well as in field applications. However, since these chemicals are water soluble, the seal is temporary. Raw material costs of latex at the application rates used in the field testing are in the order of $1000 per acre. To develop a simple device for rapidly determining the shearing strength and angle of Internal friction of coal and rock in situ. Approach Use a portable, permissible, hydraulically operated device in boreholes as deep as 100 feet into the rib, floor, or roof of the mine. How it Works The device, called a Borehole Shear Strength Tester (BST), is inserted Into a 3-inch-diameter borehole to the desired depth, locked Into position, and activated to shear the rock or coal in the borehole walls. The normal and shear pressures exerted by the BST, which are recorded during the test, are used to calculate the shearing strength and the angle of internal friction. The BST consists of 3 main components and several minor components. Main components are: ? A shear head with 2 shear plates that bite into the rock when normal pressure is applied. ? A hollow hydraulic jack with RW drill rods that pull the shear head when shear pressure is applied. ? A console with a hand pump and two hydraulic gages to activate the device and to indicate the pressures that apply the normal and shear faces to the shearing plates.

Develop a simple and practical technique to measure in situ rock mass properties for realistic design and stability evaluation of underground structures. Background The Bureau of Mines has developed basic principles and techniques to determine in situ rock mass properties including Poisson's ratio, deformation modulus, and yield and failure strengths. An instrumentation package consisting of three pressure cells is installed in a single drill hole. Cell pressure response data are acquired and used to calculate and determine the rock mass properties. How It Works A test hole of BX size (approximately 5.7 cm) or larger is drilled to the approximate depth of the measuring point. The last portion of the test hole is drilled with precision bits to EX size (approximately 3.8 cm). The instrumentation package, which consists of one 3.8-cm-diameter cylindrical pressure cell (CPC) and two 5.7-cm-diameter cement-capsulated, flat borehole pressure cells (BPC's), is then installed. A complete history of cell response to changing strata loads is acquired on a continuous basis with a chart-type hydraulic pressure recorder. From these cell pressure data, Poisson's ratios, deformation moduli, and yield and failure strengths are calculated and determined.

Tool manufacturers continue to incorporate new designs to the internal mechanism of tools in order to decrease the vibration that is delivered to the hand during operation. Modification of some tools to minimize tool vibration is not easily resolved through internal tool design. For this reason, vibration damping materials applied between the tool and the hand are a simple alternative. The damping materials may be applied to the area of the tool directly contacted by the operator or in a glove containing a vibration absorbing pad. These interventions are developed specifically to damp vibration but are not necessarily produced and tested under the same work conditions that a company may expose their workers. Therefore, it is important to test the value of the proposed interventions for the specific applications. This study evaluates the effectiveness of anti-vibration interventions currently in use at a local manufacturing company. Methods The design of this study evaluates the vibration energy produced at the tool handle and from the back of the operator’s hand. Each operator performed a series of fastener installations in metal using several interventions and one series with no intervention as a control. Four of the interventions were gloves containing anti-vibration material and the fifth intervention was an anti-vibration material wrapped around the tool handle. The protocol for wrapping the tool handle was developed and is part of the equipment procedure at this manufacturing company. Test conditions mimicked production work conditions including similar materials, fasteners and technique for installation. Vibration values were collected using 3 tri-axial accelerometers with one firmly glued to the tool handle close the hand grip as recommended by ISO 5349. A second accelerometer was placed on the top of the pistol shaped tool. The third accelerometer was attached to the back of the hand close to the third knuckle using double sided tape. Results Preliminary results for 3 volunteers show a difference between the vibration values of the control condition (mean hand vibration on bare hand = 1.77 Gs) compared to all of the interventions (p=.0001 using Mixed Procedure, Tests of Fixed Effects). The graph below shows individual trials for each subject for each condition. Glove 3 with the air bladder insert shows large variability between subjects (Range = 0.84-3.33 Gs). The other interventions show much less variability both within subjects and between subjects indicating consistent response with use of the intervention.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating the catalytic activity of rare-earth compounds to develop a catalyst for the cathode reaction of a hydrogen-oxygen fuel cell. This report presents the results of studies of the catalytic activities of lanthanide oxides for the oxidation of hydrogen at 150° to 250° C. Preliminary activity tests were made with approximately stoichiometric mixtures of hydrogen and oxygen diluted with helium. A series of tests was also run under oxygen-rich conditions in which specific rate constants and activation energies were determined. Variations in rate constants up to 2,000 times were observed for the various lanthanide oxides. The three most active catalysts were oxides of Ce, Pr, and Eu, having specific activities of 6.93 X 10-7, 4.88 X 10-7, and 4.06 X 10-7 moles H2.sec-1.m-2, respectively, at 200° C.

In This report, factors which currently enter into the design, manufacture, and quality assurance of explosion-proof enclosures are reviewed, with special emphasis given to the sealing concepts and sealants/cements, per se, for lenses. The physical and mechanical properties of a number of representative sealants and adhesives are measured, and found to exhibit great variance, with few discernible trends which might afford a firm base on which to establish minimum property standards. Accordingly, acceptance criteria for adhesives and sealants are suggested based on the survivability of an explosion-proof enclosure as a structure rather than upon the minimum mat real properties of its constituents. Procedures or surface preparation of adherends, and for quality assurance, also are proposed.

The Bureau of Mines determined low-and high-temperature thermodynamic properties for anhydrous ferric sulfate and anhydrous indium sulfate. Low-temperature heat capacities were measured between 50° and 298° K, and enthalpy increments above 298° K were determined. The high-temperature measurements of Fe2(S04)3 extended to 900° K and those of In2(S04)3 to about 1,000° K. A minor transition was found for Fe2(S04)3 at 800° K, with a heat of transition of 540 cal/mole. Tabulations were made of the low-temperature heat capacities and the high-temperature enthalpy and entropy increments. The 298° K entropies derived from the low-temperature measurements were 67.6±0.S ca1/deg mole for ferric sulfate and 72.2±O.5 cal/deg mole for indium sulfate. High-temperature enthalpy increments were also given in equation form.

In characterizing tars obtained by the low-temperature carbonization of North Dakota lignite, infrared spectra have been an invaluable aid in both qualitative and quantitative examination. Quite, early in the tar-research program of the Federal Bureau of Mines it became evident that the small number of published spectra available for hydroxy-aromatics would be inadequate for comparative purposes when dealing with the wide range of compounds present in coal tar; therefore, compiling a catalog of spectra was begun as a continuing part of the tar program. Because these spectra should be valuable to other investigators in this and related fields, they are being presented in these reports. This supplement to the original publications presents the spectra (figs, I to 32), representing 32 compounds, largely phenolic materials. The major problem of this project has been the availability of materials for examination. Most of the compounds included in this supplement were synthesized at the Bureau of Mines Lignite Research Laboratory. Some were obtained from commercial sources, whereas the compound 2'-hydroxy-l-phenylnaphthalene was synthesized at the Bureau of Mines laboratory in Bruceton, Pa. For the past several years, the Bureau of Mines has conducted laboratory and continuous process development work on weathered mica pegmatites and micaceous schist ores to determine the feasibility of recovering commercial-grade mica concentrates by flotation. The research has resulted in the development of two processes for flotadon of mica: an acid cationic method for recovery of coarse mica, and an alkaline anionic-cationic method for recovery of fine mica. The research indicated that the two processes may be effectively utilized separately or in combination for flotation of mica from weathered pegmatites and micaceous schists. Concentrates containing over 98 percent mica, with recoveries ranging from 77 to 92 percent, were obtained from the pegmatite ores. The micaceous schist ores yielded concentrates containing 95 to 98 percent mica, with recoveries ranging from 70 to 83 percent. Part 1 of this report summarizes the process development work and demonstrates the feasibility of producing commercial- grade mica concentrates. The report also includes details of commercial beneficiation and grinding of .mica.

In overview, 1988 appeared to be the best year for the world's mineral industry since 1980, although the all-important petroleum component suffered severely from low prices. With this notable exception, the traditional statistical measures of mineral industry performance, namely production, trade, and consumption, reflected growth in most elements of the world mineral industry from crude material extraction through the gamut of downstream processing. Moreover, the growth was reasonably well distributed geographically, with many countries sharing in the substantial upturn in activity. World crude mineral output value was estimated at over $1,272 billion in current dollars ($1,090 billion in constant 1983 dollars). The value added by the processing component of the mineral industry raised the total value of the industry's output to an estimated $3,057 billion in current dollars ($2,620 billion in constant 1983 dollars). Less easily assessed was the value of mineral commodities moving in 1988's international world trade, particularly because of the declines in world crude oil and refinery product prices. It remained to be seen if increased volume and value in nonfuel mineral and coal exports, coupled with an increase in the volume of oil exports, would be adequate to offset the drop in oil prices. Whether or not the value of world mineral commodity trade topped the 1987 level of over $498 billion, an increase in the volume of mineral commodity trade was almost assured. Similarly, although comprehensive statistics were not avail-able on consumption of all mineral commodities in all countries, available data on selected major commodities in selected major countries suggested that not only had output of most mineral commodities advanced, but so too had consumption levels for most commodities.

The safety record of the metal mining and milling industries in 1965 is reviewed by the Bureau of Mines. The overall injury-frequency rate of 23.77 per million man-hours was 5 percent lower than in 1964 and was the lowest annual rate in a statistical history beginning with 1931. The injury-severity rate of 3,521 days lost per million man-hours in 1965 represented a 5-percent improvement over 1964. However, the total of 3,825 disabling work injuries comprised 61 fatal and 3,764 nonfatal injuries, one and 92 more, respectively, than in 1964. At primary nonferrous smelters, refineries, and reduction plants, the injury-frequency rate of 8.97 per million man-hours in 1965 was 13 percent lower, but the severity rate percent higher than in 1964. these plants in 1965, 4 more of 1,173 days lost per million man-hours was 17 There were 12 fatal and 971 nonfatal injuries at and 28 fewer, respectively, than in 1964.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the preparation characteristics of 10 coal samples collected from the significant coal-producing mines of Lucas, Mahaska, Marion, Monroe, and Wapello Counties in Iowa, with special emphasis on physical desulfurization. All 10 samples were of high sulfur content as received, ranging from 4.2 to 10.4 percent; the organic sulfur content ranged from 0.8 to 3.8 percent. The pyritic sulfur content of the samples could be appreciably reduced by crushing and washing and provided pyritic sulfur reductions ranging from 36 to 75 percent. Crushing to 3/8-inch top size and removing the sink 1.60 specific gravity material would provide float coal products containing 3.5 to 6.0 percent sulfur. However, these coals could be burned at utility plants utilizing SO2 removal processes with efficiencies ranging from 70 to 88 percent and still be in compliance with the current Federal SO2 emission regulations for stationary sources.

The Bureau of Mines estimated the economic feasibility of investing in a directional hole methane drainage project in the Pittsburgh coalbed for 5 yr in advance of mining. This report estimates the capital investment and operating cost of recovering 325 MMft3 of methane gas per year and the selling price of approximately 317 MMft3 of gas per year. The labor, equipment, and supply requirements were determined from those of a previous directional hole drilled at the Emerald Mine, near Waynesburg, PA. The cost of equipment, materials, services, and labor are in third quarter 1982 dollars. They were obtained from vendors, contractors, and the U.S. Department of Labor. Findings indicate a total capital investment of $1,381,160. Annual operating cost amounted to $167,690. At a wellhead price of $2.05 per thousand cubic feet, the sale of approximately 317 MMft3 of gas per year results in a rate of return on investment of approximately 25 pet.

A picture of the ceramic industrial potential of the Pacific Northwest States is presented by reviewing the present ceramic industries, raw-material resources, and current market demands. A resume is given of the industrial plants manufacturing ceramic ware as well as available information on raw-material resources. No attempt was made to prospect for new deposits but rather to evaluate, insofar as possible, those already known. Since much of the industry is concentrated on the Pacific coast, most of the information available on resources concerns deposits in that area. Large, undeveloped districts in Montana and Idaho, however, offer promise of larger reserves of ceramic raw materials. Average annual production, some operating costs, and annual power consumption are given for each of the plants. Production and some cost figures are listed to show the limited nature of the present industry and to suggest fields open for new development.

Ingots of zirconium and other highly reactive metals such as titanium and hafnium produced by the consumable-electrode arc-melting process require conditioning before forging or rolling. A nondestructive, arc-conditioning technique has been developed as a substitute for lathe conditioning. The technique employs en electric arc under an inert atmosphere to fuse surface metal on the sidewalls of ingots without seriously affecting the general quality of the ingots. Advantages of the practice are Increased yields, lower accumulation of inferior scrap, and actual cost savings. The work cited in this report was done on zirconium. INTRODUCTION The consumable-electrode arc-melting process as practiced at the Bureau of Mines3 4/ has proved to be a technique for producing sound, homogeneous, commercial-size ingots of zirconium and its alloys. Ingots produced by this process, however, have as a characteristic a layer of partly fused metal on the sidewall to a depth of 3/16 to 3/8 inch. To prevent extension of surface imperfections during forging, the ingots are ordinarily conditioned by removing defective material in a lathe. If the metal were less reactive or the requirements less severe, the machine chips could be recycled and remelted. However, zirconium, being so oxygen sensitive, is contaminated by merely being machined despite extensive cooling of the tool bit. Further, being contaminated with oxygen, the chip metal upon remelting is 10 to 25 Brinell-hardnese numbers harder than the ingot from which it was machined. For this reason, the ingot specifications for naval reactor use have prohibited remelting machine chips, except as required for starting pads. Again, were zirconium less costly or less in demand this ever-increasing pile could be burned to oxide and recycled through the Kroll sponge process. Economics do not favor this, as melting feed stock has an estimated increase In value over oxide of about $8.80 per pound of contained zirconium. The efforts of the Bureau to solve the problem have been directed along two lines: To reduce the contamination of the machine chips produced and to reduce the quantity of the chips produced. This paper presents the technique developed to reduce the quantity of chips produced by arc-conditioning the remelted ingot.

Methane can be a significant hazard in coal mine longwalling operations and extensive methane mitigation techniques are employed by coal mine operators. Reservoir modeling techniques are used to better understand the liberation and migration of methane from the surrounding rocks towards the mine ventilation system. The caved rock behind the advancing longwall face, known as the gob, can contain high void ratios, providing high permeability flow paths to the methane. The gob is progressively compacted by the weight of the overburden, resulting in a reduction in the void ratio and associated permeability. Estimating the permeability distribution within the gob poses challenges due to its complexity. The authors have developed a new methodology to determine both horizontal and vertical variations in the permeability of the gob. Variations of the permeability in the vertical direction are based on a model of caving and block rotation, which considers the effect of block dimensions and fall height on the void ratio. Gob compaction by the overburden and associated permeability changes are determined from a three-dimensional geo-mechanical model which simulates the gob as a strain hardening granular material. The resulting three-dimensional permeability distribution in the gob is then transferred to a reservoir model. The paper demonstrates the application of the method and shows that reasonable results are obtained when compared to empirical experience and measurements.

Several laboratory flotation tests were conducted by the Bureau of Mines on a sample of unweathered diorite from the B. F. Camden property, Amherst County, Va. Results showed that an ilmenite concentrate analyzing 45.5 percent Ti02 (titania), 0.07 percent P205 (phosphorus pentoxide), and 2.21 percent Si02 (silicon dioxide) could be produced from a feed containing 7.72 percent Ti02 and 3.94 percent P205. Ti02 recovery in the concentrate was 47.6 percent in a batch test. The weathered saprolite material overlying the diorite required scrubbing and desliming to remove argillaceous material and preliminary flotation of apatite followed by flotation of ilmenite. The resulting concentrate analyzed 47.3 percent Ti02, 0.19 percent P205, and 0.99 percent Si02 from a starting feed of 8.99 percent Ti02 and 3.37 percent P205; TiO2 recovery was 54.5 percent.

This report summarizes cost data accumulated during 15 months of sustained operation of the Bureau of Mines Boulder City (Nev.) titanium plant, which had a capacity of about 1,350 pounds of titanium sponge per day. The plant was constructed during the 1952 fiscal year with funds supplied by the Ordnance Corps, Department of the Army. Its original purpose was to engage in process development work as a continuing phase of the Bureau of Mines policy to seek improvements in producing titanium metal. In early 1953 the Defense Materials Procurement Agency contracted with the Bureau of Mines for producing approximately one-half million pounds of usable ductile titanium sponge. Production began in May 1953, ended in September 1954, and yielded 492,503 pounds of acceptable metal. Operating costs covering this period of operation, with suggested depreciation and administrative costs, are given, as well as outlines of building and equipment capital costs. In addition, miscellaneous economic considerations are discussed, including labor and operating-time schedules.
