Nickel having a purity of more than 99.99 percent with reference to metallic impurities was electrodeposited at the Rolla Metallurgy Research Center of the Federal Bureau of Mines. The production of high-purity nickel is in keeping with the current trend in technologies for producing metals with lower and lower percentages of impurities. To understand more fully the role to be played by nickel by itself and as a component in many alloys, the element must be in a state of high purity. Procedures are outlined for purifying nickel solutions by precipitating and filtering off impurities. Details are given for using the purified solutions as electrolytes in depositing high-purity nickel. The elecneleposited nickel contained 0.0005 to 0.002 percent each of cobalt, copper, aid iron together with spectrographically detectable traces of aluminum, magnesium, and silicon. The deposits were smooth and dense; the crystalline structure was typical of an electrodeposited metal. Some preliminary experiments for purifying nickel solutions by liquid-liquid extraction are also described in this report. Tests of this type were limited since more encouraging results were obtained by other methods of purification.

Monazite sand is the only commercial source of cerium, other rare-earth metals and thorium. Although used in rather small quantities, it is essential to many industries. The United Unites is entirely dependent upon British India and Brazil for its supplies. Monazite sand or sand imported under the tariff classification for monazite was shipped to the United States in greater quantities, in 1940 than ever before. About 75 percent of our imports was from British India and most of the remainder from Brazil. If need be, Brazilian production can be expanded to supply all of our essential requirements, and the theater of war expands in the Pacific Brazil may supersede India as the principal source. PHYSICAL PROPERTIES The mineral monazite is generally honey yellow or may vary from greenish yellow to clove brown. Oils from coal hydrogenation have been examined at the Bureau of Mines to learn whether any centers of the optical activity reported in coal would survive catalytic hydrogenation at 450-525 ° C and about 8,000 psig pressure , and , if so , to obtain information about the nature of the active products . Oils from carbonization tars also were examined . Optical activity was found in the majority of the distillate fractions of the hydrogenation oils and in almost all distillates from the carbonization tars . No activity was observed in the tar - acid and tar - base fractions examined . Methods for isolating optically active concentrates included distillation through a packed column , liquid chromatography on silica gel , and adduction with urea . For the materials so processed , the optical activity segregated mainly in the paraffin - naphthenic and the hydroaromatic fractions . Although the specific compounds responsible for the optical activity were not isolated , experimental and spectrometric findings indicate that alkylsubstituted cycloalkane , cycloalkene , and hydroaromatic structures are most likely responsible for the optical activity of the concentrates . The optically active centers probably derived mainly from the steroids and terpenes in the biological materials that participated in the formation of coal .

An accelerated and coordinated program of coal research is believed by many to be a necessary step in assuring coal's proper position in the expanding energy market. The President's Advisory Committee on Energy Supplies and Resources Policy, for example, made the following recommendation: We recognize that coal is a great national asset and endorse a cooperative study to determine what research and development could be undertaken. The coal industry and both Federal and State Governments should participate in this study and its costs. Representatives of the coal industry have agreed that such a study should be initiated. Accordingly, Felix E. Wormser, Assistant Secretary - Mineral Resources, United States Department of the Interior, requested the Bureau of Mines and Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., to conduct a survey of current research on bituminous coal. In addition to this survey, studies were made to determine research projects that would be of value to the coal industry.

Mercury was produced originally at the Idaho Almaden mine from 1939 to 1942. When the ;.nine was shut down, more than 100,000 tons of ore, containing from 2.5 to 3 pounds of mercury per ton, was known to be adjacent to old workings but had been considered too low grade for commercial operation. Later, detailed, systematic exploration by Rare Metals Corporation of America increased and delimited enough minable reserves for further operation to be foreseen for several years. The average grade of the ore is estimated at slightly more than 3.5 pounds of mercury per ton. Open-pit mining and installation of the largest rotary kiln in the United States furnacing mercury ore have made possible profitable exploitation of these reserves (fig. 1). The bulk of the exploration was by percussion drilling, although some diamond drilling was done to check the results. When enough reserves were indicated to assure a successful operation, stripping and plant construction were started simultaneously. Figure 2 is a general view of the plant. The ore bodies, although irregular in size, shape, and grade and covered by essentially barren cap rock, are amenable to low-cost, trackless, open-pit mining. Development consists of stripping the overburden and removing, barren cap rock. Ore is being mined at approximately [5],000 tons per month and treated in a 175-ton-per-day furnacing plant.

This report describes in detail methods of making corrosion tests and chemical analyses that have been used extensively and satisfactorily in a study of plants in which various surface, waters and brines are conditioned and used for water flooding, brine disposal, and reservoir-pressure maintenance in Kansas, Oklahoma, and North Texas. The tests and analyses described were designed and adapted for use in the field in determining the relative corrosive and plugging tendencies of waters from various sources conditioned by different methods. Although the described methods were developed and used in testing oil-field waters in the Midcontinent oil-producing area of the United States, these same methods should be equally applicable to testing oil-field or highly mineralized waters throughout the world. Many of the methods used have been discussed by the writer (1)2/ previously, and some of them have been used for similar work in other laboratories. Early in the development of the practice of the subsurface injection of brines for disposal and increasing the recovery of oil, it became evident that different methods of chemical treatment and conditioning equipment would have to be devised to sustain desired injection rates into water-input wells. These changes became necessary because the highly mineralized waters produced with petroleum from deep formations became chemically unstable when pumped to the surface, owing to loss of dissolved gases as pressure and temperature dropped to atmospheric and to the contact with atmospheric oxygen at the surface.

A survey of the petroleum pipe lines by the Bureau of Mines as of May 1, 1923, shows that on that date there was a total of slightly more than 90,000 miles of pipe lines in the United States, having a capacity of approximately 15,750,000 barrels, which is equivalent to one-fourth of the nation's average production for one month. These lines varied in diameter from 2 to 16 inches, the weighted average being 6 inches. The total pipe-line milenge was about equally divided between trunk lines and gathering lines, though the capacity of the former was about four times that of the latter. This was due, of course, to the difference in average diameter, that for the former being 7.4 inches as compared with 3.7 inches for the latter. The common size for trunk lines was 8 inches, and for gathering lines 2 inches. Oklahora, with 19,180 miles of pipe lines, is the leading State in total mileage, with Texas second and Pennsylvania third. From point of trunk lines alone Texas is considerably ahead of any of the other States, a position which it owes to its size and to the growth in the rovement to its Gulf ports. Cali- fornia, though the leading State from point of production, ranks only seventh in pipe-line mileage. This is due to the fortunate location of the Los Angeles Basin fields, some of which are within sight of the refineries to which their oil is delivered or of the port of San Pedro through which their oil is shipped. The last survey of this nature, made in the spring of 1924 by the U. S. Geological Survey, recorded a total mileage of nearly 83,000 with a capacity of approximately 14,450,000 barrels. This indicates an increase of 9 per cent in both mileage and capacity during the two years.

The first step in determining whether Mn can be recovered by in situ leaching is to develop and test a selective lixiviant. Two column leach tests and one core leach test Were conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines on Mn oxide ore using aqueous sulfur dioxide (SO2) as the lixiviant. The column tests showed that aqueous S02 could selectively dissolve available Mn oxides from calcite-rich ore in a heap leach system. However, the core test showed that calcite gangue side reactions can have pronounced negative effects on the likelihood of successful in situ leaching of a calcite-rich ore with aqueous S02. Petrographic and geochemical analyses showed that both Mn (IV, III) oxides and calcite were dissolved. The abundance of dissolved Ca caused precipitation of gypsum. Acid consumption by calcite dissolution caused a rise in pH that caused the SO/S species to shift to S032-(sulfIte), which hindered reductive dissolution of Mn oxide. Gypsum precipitation did not affect complete leaching of the rock fragments in the column tests; however, it plugged the natural permeability in the core. Manganese recoveries were high for the column tests and low for the core test.

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 374 natural gas samples from 24 States and 5 foreign countries. These samples were collected during calendar year 1966 as a part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses of foreign samples contained in this publication represent the first samples received as a result of this expanded program. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4 Eight previous publications have been made to present the results of 7,244 gas analyses made? by the Bureau of Mines Helium Activity prior to 1966. This paper is the first part of a report giving the results of the Bureau of Mines' twenty-third semiannual survey of motor gasoline marketed in the United States. A companion report, Part II, is in preparation and will give a more detailed discussion of the whole survey. Results of the determination of copper-strip corrosion, color, sulphur content, copper-dish evaporation residue, and gum content as given by the Bureau of Mines steam-oven method will be presented in the second paper, which will also include the prevailing retail price and the tax at the time the sample was taken. This paper deals specifically with data relative to gravity, Reid vapor pressure,5 and distillation (method 100.13).6 The samples tested were divided into "competitive-price gasolines" and "premium-price motor fuels," a method of presentation that was begun with the twenty-second semiannual survey.7 A total of 312 samples were collected from service station pumps in 20 cities throughout the United States. Of this number of samples, 207 were "competitive-price gasolines" and 105 were "premium-price motor fuels." All of the samples were collected in March, 1931, and analyzed at the Petroleum Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Miner at Bartlesville, Okla.

"An overview of various physical and interfacial characterization methods for use in mineral processing is presented in this paper. The availability of a large number of characterization techniques and commercial instruments requires that the reliability and limitation of each be carefully examined. The choice of a method may depend upon the manner in which the information is to be used, for example in development of new processes, plant and process design, plant control, problem solving, etc. IntroductionThe behavior of particulate systems, in mineral processing and other applications, is primarily affected by the physical characteristics (size, shape, surface area, pore structure) of the particles and the nature of the different solid-fluid interfaces present. Mineral processing operations in general are either designed to modify and/or control physical and interfacial properties (grinding, classification, agglomeration, etc.) or are strongly influenced by them (flotation, flocculation, solid/liquid separation, etc.). Characterization of physical and interfacial properties should be an integral part of the development of new processes, plant and process design, and routine plant operation.Our purpose in preparing this article has been to present an overview of the current status of characterization, to point out areas of weakness, and to discuss the reliability and limitations of the various techniques, procedures, and instrumentation available. For more detailed discussion of methods, etc., the reader is referred to standard references.Sampling particulate solids.Sampling is a critical factor in any procedure for characterizing particulate materials — the reliability of characterization data is ultimately limited by the extent to which the sample used was truly represen¬tative of the population from which it was taken.Sampling from particulate solids involves two basic problems: (1) the selection of a random', unbiased sample and (2) choice of the appropriate sample size.The problem of sample selection involves the design of a sample collection procedure that ensures that every kind of particle in the population has the proper chance of being included in the sample without bias. This report, the second of a series, presents the results of laboratory corrosion studies which were made in connection with a one-year test on aluminum lease tanks conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines. Part I of the report contains the results of the field teats.5 The studies were made on an oil lease in a so-called "sour district," near Borger, Tag., where free hydrogen sulphide accompanied the production of oil, gas, and salt water. Steel tanks previously used on the lease had suffered severe corrosion, because steel is inherently susceptible to attack by hydrogen sulphide. Because of the high resistivity of aluminum to the action of hydrogen sulphide, it Was believed that this metal had promising possibilities as a material for the construction of lease tanks in "sour districts." The results of the one-year field teat proved that aluminum lease tanks will withstand corrosion by hydrogen sulphide, but it was found that aluminum was susceptible to attack by salt water, which was invariably present in certain portions of the tanks, and that hydrogen sulphide accelerated this salt-water corrosion in an indirect manner, as will be explained hereinafter. In order to study corrosion conditions encountered in the tanks during the test period, a laboratory was maintained at the site of the aluminum lease tanks.

This report describes the preparation characteristics of the more significant coals in Dickenson County, Va. It is one in a series planned to determine which coals are suitable for the production of metallurgical coke either as mined or after beneficiation. Nearly 4 million tons of coal was produced in Dickenson County in 1955, of which approximately 2.7 million tons was cleaned mechanically in 5 cleaning plants. The Federal Geological Survey has estimated that nearly 1,300 million tons of measured and indicated coal reserves remained in the county as of January 1, 1951.

"The National Safety Competition of 1938, the fourteenth of its kind conducted by the Bureau of Mines in which bronze trophies known as Sentinels of Safety are awarded to winning companies, has just been completed and the results are presented here.With 345 mines and quarries competing, more than in any previous year except 1931, the contest revealed low accident rates at many of the enrolled plants and, which is even more remarkable, it revealed 113 mines and quarries at which no lost-time accidents occurred during the contest year.The Sentinels of Safety trophies, provided by The Explosives Engineer magazine, were awarded to four underground mines, one open-pit mine, and one quarry. Each employee of the winning plant was awarded a Certificate of Honor by the Bureau of Mines in recognition of the employee's part in helping his company to win the trophy. In addition to the award of trophies, a Certificate of Honorable Mention was awarded to each of the mines and quarries in second, third, fourth, and fifth places in their respective contest groups and also to each mine and quarry that worked 30,000 or more man-hours without a lost-time accident. Ninety-two such certificates were awarded for 1938. Twenty-three other mines and quarries also operated without an accident but worked less than 30,000 man-hours, the minimum required by the contest rules for award of Certificates of Honorable Mention.Previous to 1938, five trophies were awarded annually in the National Safety Competition. For the 1938 contest a sixth trophy was provided by The Explosives Engineer so that open-pit mines and quarries, two classes of operations that previously had been included in one group in the competition, might have separate awards."

The vanadiferous deposits of the Sublette Ridge and Salt River Range, 2 miles east of Raymond, Idaho, in western Lincoln County, Wyo., were examined August 24 to August 30, 1942, by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, who was shown these properties by W. W. Rubey of the Geological Survey, Washington, D. C. The Sublette Ridge deposits are owned by the former U. S. Phosphate Co. H. F. Chaney, Portland, Oreg., is the representative for the company. The following report covers the history of the district, outlines the physical features and communications, mentions the property, and notes the ownership. The deposits and ore are described, and work performed by the Bureau of Mines is explained in detail. Ore-dressing tests and methods are explained.

This report describes the first phase of a general investigation designed to ascertain whether an electronic roof-testing device can be developed that will improve the ability to detect "loose" or "drummy" roof rock over that possible by striking the roof with a sounding bar and noting the character of the air vibrations with the unaided ear or the rock vibrations with the fingers. The amplitude, frequency content, and duration of the vibrations produced by striking solid and drummy roof rock with a hammer or sounding bar have been measured. Results disclosed that there is a significant difference between the characteristics of the vibrations produced in solid and drummy roof. This difference is such that the design of an electronic device to indicate quantitatively the condition of the roof rock appears possible. INTRODUCTION The conventional method of roof testing consists of striking the roof with a bar2/ and judging its soundness from the character of the air vibrations heard with the ear and/or the rock vibrations felt with the fingers -a procedure that depends upon the experience and the sensory abilities of the observer. Impact testing of a solid roof rock usually produces a sharp ping or click, whereas impact testing of a drummy roof rock produces a dull thud or drummy sound. This method of roof testing is, at most, only a qualitative test, and many roof rocks are difficult to classify as drummy or solid.

This report describes and discusses present-day leaching technology employed to recover copper from low-grade mine and dump materials derived from the exploitation of copper ore deposits in the Western United States. Illustrations of the integral parts of the leaching, precipitation, and recovery operations at several copper-producing companies are presented. Schematic drawings are included to present typical flowsheets of leaching and precipitation operations. Operational problems common to most copper leaching and precipitation plants are discussed. Areas of present and future research to improve leaching techniques are cited.

Seven configurations for panel entries of a longwall coal mine are compared and ranked according to structural stability. These entry configurations are analyzed using three-dimensional finite element modeling The models include large dimensions to minimize boundary effects, elastoplastic constitutive relations, and simulated excavation and construction of support systems. The stability criteria are formulated in a quantitative manner to facilitate the ranking of the entry configurations. These criteria are based on the expected volume of caved rock in the entry openings. The stability ranking is applied to the entry excavation phase, the headgate phase, and the tailate phase of the entry life cycle. Parametric variations are applied using two-dimensional finite element models to determine the sensitivity to changes in mining and design parameters.
