Round Mountain is one of a number of locations investigated by the Bureau of Mines in its search for manganese deposits during the early phases at the strategic minerals program. The Suiter mine, on Round Mountain, had provided some 5,000 tons of manganese concentrates during the period 1917 to 1919, and early in 1941 prospecting by the Virginia Hardwood Lumber Co. in this same area had discovered manganese on what later became known as the Hall Pit. These promising indications encouraged the Bureau to begin an exploration project in search of additional reserves of manganese on Round Mountain in January 1942 (fig. 1).

The oil shale from the Mahogany zone of the Green River formation in northwestern Colorado has the greatest potential in the United States for early utilization. A large reserve of adequately rich shale is available to support a sizable industry, and crushing of tremendous tonnages will be required if conventional processing methods are used. This report presents Bureau of Mines data on crushing experiments, physical properties, and related information for Colorado oil shale. Among the properties important to crushing are slab-forming tendency, resilience, slippery character of the richer grades, and heterogeneous nature of an average charge of Colorado oil shale.

The West Tintic mining district is located at the southern end of the Sheeprock Range in Juab County, Utah (fig. 1). Scheelite was discovered in the area during 1940, and the Desert Tungsten Co. began mining in May 1942. The ore was shipped to the Metals Reserve Co. chemical treatment plant at Salt Lake City during the war. A Bureau of Mines development project was established on property controlled by the Desert Tungsten Co. Work was started during September 1942 and completed in February 1943. The program included removal of overburden in the mine area to facilitate geologic napping, followed by surface trenching, diamond drilling, and sampling (figs. 2,. 3, 4, and 5). Eleven diamond-drill holes totaling 1,480 feet were drilled from the surface. Sixty-one samples from the surface trenches and diamond drill holes were assayed. The logs of the holes are given in table 2. Assay results of samples from the surface trenches and diamond drill holes are listed in tables 1 and 3. Geologists of the U.S. Geological Survey mapped the mineralized area during the project period. The scheelite deposits occur in limestone areas adjacent to intrusive m9.sses, which are principally monzonite. The ore bodies are pyrometasomatic in origin, but consist of two somewhat different types: (1) a series of veins occupying fault zones in limestone and (2) tactite bodies immediately adjacent to the limestone. The veins in the limestone have been the most productive of the two types.

The number of persons fatally injured in the California petroleum industry in 1932 was 24, a decrease of 6, or 20 percent from the number killed in 1931. The decrease in the number of fatalities occurring in 1932 caused the fatality curve of the California petroleum industry to reach its lowest point in 10 years. Changing conditions in the oil industry - reduced personnel, decreased active field development, and curtailed production - have undoubtedly caused a part of this decrease, but continued accident-prevention efforts by the industry have also contributed to the reduction in the number of fatalities for 1932. The Bureau of Mines has analyzed and reported annually the fatalities in the California petroleum industry for a period of 10 years. Figure 1 shows the trend of fatal accidents during that period. Fatality statistics for 1932 show that the drilling and producing, pipe line and transportation, and refining and natural gasoline divisions of the industry had fewer accidents in 1932 than in 1931, sales and marketing being the only division that showed an increase over 1931. The number of fatalities by divisions for 1931 and 1932, percent of total, and percentages of increase and decrease are given in Table 1.

Two-stage electric smelting tests, using small submerged arc furnaces, were made on high-iron manganiferous materials from the Pioche District, Nev., and the Cuyuna Range, Minn. The object was to reduce sufficient iron in the first stage to give a slag with a favorable Mn to Fe ratio for smelting to ferromanganese in the second stage. The nodulized flotation concentrate from the Pioche District contained 29.2 percent Mn and had a Mn to Fe ratio of 2.3:l. When smelted with coke and silica or alumina as flux, more than 90 percent of the manganese was recovered in slags with Mn to Fe ratios of 10: :24:1. The Pioche slag was smelted to ferromanganese using coke and lime- stone or dolomite as flux. The ferromanganese was high in silicon but other- wise met specifications. Recovery of manganese to ferromanganese in this step was 73 to 78 percent. Overall recovery of manganese was about 70 percent. The sintered flotation concentrate from the Cuyuna Range material contained 12.9 percent Mn and had a Mn to Fe ratio of 0.3:1. When smelted with limestone as flux, about 83 percent of the manganese was recovered in a slag with a Mn to Fe ratio of about 6:1. The Cuyuna slag was smelted to ferromanganese with coke and limestone for flux. Recovery in this step was 61 percent of the manganese in a high silicon ferromanganese. Overall recovery of manganese was about 50 percent.

In overall aggregate, the world's mineral industry in 1987 experienced a more satisfactory year than in 1986, at least insofar as its performance could be assessed from traditional statistical indicators. Production, trade and consumption seemingly advanced in the case of the majority of commodities, and prices for a number of commodities advanced. It was by no means certain, however, whether 1987 investment in mineral industry ventures would top the levels of 1986, when, in the case of petroleum industry investment expenditures there had been a sharp decline, this in contrast to evidences of a slight upturn in steel industry investment. World crude mineral output value was estimated at more than $1,084 billion, and the value added by minerals industry processing of this material probably raised the total value of the industry's production from primary materials to more than $2,600 billion constant 1983 dollars. Less easy too assess was the value of mineral commodities moving in international trade, but with a resurgence in oil prices from the 1986 levels, an increase above the 1986 $500 billion mark seemed assured. There are no comprehensive aggregate statistics on mineral consumption comparable to those on production and trade, but quantitative growth recorded for most major commodities suggested a favorable trend, particularly when coupled with a general (though by no means universal) upturn in unit prices.

Corresponding tables for 1953 and 1954 follow in consecutive order under the following general sections: (A) General injury experience: Tables 1 to 11: Contain current data on number of fatal and nonfatal injuries, frequency and severity rates, and average severity and time-loss rates. (B) Selected injury data: Tables 12 to 85: Contain current data on causes of injuries, distribution of injuries by part of body injured, days of disability, extent of hand and machine loading, experience by employment and production groups, and various other operating factors and physical conditions related to the occurrence of injuries at the Nation's coal mines.

"INTRODUCTION The BeVan quartz crystal prospect in the Indian Creek mining district of Lemhi County, west-central Idaho, was examined by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines 3/ on July 9, 1943. As quartz crystals possessing peizoelectric properties were on the critical list of strategic war minerals, further exploration of the deposit was recommended. The Bureau of Mines exploration began in December 1943 and continued through January 1944. Additional trenching was completed during May and June 1944. This report presents the data obtained by this exploration.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. "INTRODUCTION This investigation was undertaken in 1939 for the purpose of securing the necessary information relating to the field techniques and accuracy that would be needed for magnetically surveying State-wide areas. The Florida,peninsula was chosen for such a study for two reasons: First, because it is geologically ideal for such an investigation, since it comprises a series of unconsolidated, flat-lying Tertiary and Cretaceous sediments of low magnetic susceptibility covering a complex and much-folded crystalline basement comprised of rocks carrying strongly -paramagnetic materials; second, because information concerning the structural trends of the crystalline basement would be of great interest and Importance in the study of Appalachian orogeny and the relationship of the Florida Peninsula to both the Appalachian and Antilleantectonte systems. The results of this magnetic survey have clearly demonstrated that the magnetic anomalies reflect variations in the crystalline a basement. To the degree which the structures of the crystalline basement control the structures of the overlying sediments these results are useful for oil exploration.MAGNETIC OBSERVATIONSAll magnetic measurements were made with a vertical Aekania magnetic variometer having a temperature compensated needle. All observations were tied into two base stations located at Fort. Myers and Gaineeville, Fla. The absolute vertical magnetic intensities at these two bass stations were determined by the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey within an accuracy of + 10 gammas. The accuracy of the base station variometer used in the present survey was of the order of ± 3 gammas. The sensitivity throughout the survey of the magnetic variemoter used on the traverses approximated 30 gammas per scale division and it is estimated that the probable error between stations along a traverse would be about + 5 gammas. Measurements were started on traverse C near Fort Myers and tied into the Fort Myers base station established by the Coast and Geodetic Survey. Twelve traverses, comprising 1,500 station observations, wore occupied between the Fort Myers and Gainsville base stations. When the cumulative total of these 1,500 interim observations was tied into the Gainesville base station it was found to differ by only 30 gammas from the value obtained by the Coast and Geodetic Survey for that base. The observations were adjusted for this difference."

The Bureau of Mines investigated alloys containing lanthanum (La), praseodymium (Pr), neodymium (Nd), cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), and magnesium (4g) as possible components of a permanent magnet mate¬rial utilizing a cerium-free synthetic mischmetal (M) as a substitute for scarce samarium (Sm) metal. Magnets containing M-Co-Cu-Mg and M-Co-Cu-Fe-Mg were fabricated by powder metallurgy techniques and evaluated. A synthetic mischmetal (M20) containing 20 pct La, 60 Pr, and 20 Nd yielded the best overall magnetic properties. The M20-Co-Cu-Mg alloys had energy products as high as 13.2 MGOe, remanences as high as 7.89 kG, normal coercivities as high as 6.26 kOe, and intrinsic coercivities as high as 13.4 kOe. The best value of intrinsic coercivity, 22.9 kOe, was obtained with an M-Co-Cu-Mg magnet in which the synthetic misch¬metal contained 30 pct La, 50 Pr, and 20 Nd. These values compare favorably with those of the Sm-Co magnets fabricated and measured at the Bureau's Reno Research Center, which had energy product of 15.1 MGOe, remanence of 7.8 kG, normal coercivity of 7.5 kOe, and intrinsic coercivity of 27.4 kOe. Iron substitution for part of the cobalt resulted in a decrease of magnetic properties, although several percent iron can be added before a drastic loss of magnetic properties occurs.

This report, authorized under Contract Number H0220065, Amendment Number Six, documents the results of an investigation of lighting system modifications and designs for working place illumination in high and low coal entries of underground coal mines. The portable and machine mounted system designs, both modified and prototype, represent a continuation of work performed under Contract Number H0111403, Amendment Number One. See the Final Technical Report dated May 26, 1972 for detailed information concerning this prior Contract. All modified and prototype systems met the performance requirements of Bureau of Mines Specification 2G, as proved by test. In addition, the systems met the requirement for illumination, as specified in the Contract and in the proposed standards which were generated in response to Public Law 91-173.

The 53 countries that constituted Africa in 1993 accounted for a significant portion of total world output of a number of mineral commodities. For the continent as a whole, world shares of most commodities showed little change from those of 1992 although most output volumes showed a slight decline. There were no significant production increases, but there were significant decreases of cobalt and copper because of political instability in Zaire and production problems in Zambia, of chromite resulting from cutbacks in South Africa and Zimbabwe, and of phosphate rock owing to a lower output by producers in general. (See tables 1 and 2.) Among the most significant mineral commodities produced in Africa, ranked by portion of world production in 1993, were diamond, cobalt, chromite, gold, phosphate rock, manganese ore, uranium and petroleum. Others of importance in world trade were andalusite, antimony, asbestos, bauxite, coal, copper, fluorspar, lithium minerals, platinum-group metals (PGM), titanium minerals (ilmenite and rutile), vanadium, vermiculite, and zircon. Several of these-chromite cobalt, diamond, and manganese-were not produced in the United States.

"Silicosis is a fibrotic pulmonary disease produced by inhalation of silica-containing dusts (Peters, 1986). Chronic silicosis may develop 20-40 years after initial exposure to crystalline silica, and the disease may progress from a simple to a complicated form. Few symptoms are evident in simple silicosis with pulmonary function being relatively normal. However, chest radiographs reveal small rounded ·opacities in the upper lobes of the lungs. These silicotic nodules consist of collagen arranged in a distinctive circular pattern. As fibrotic changes become more severe, the disease progresses to complicated silicosis (progressive massive fibrosis). Complicated silicosis is associated with shortness of breath and decreases in pulmonary function characteristic ofrestrictive lung disease. Chest x rays reveal numerous large silicotic nodules which may be associated with scar emphysema. Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain the cellular events which result in silica-induced lung damage and fibrosis (Lapp and Castranova, 1993). They include: ( l) direct cytotoxicity of silica, (2) activation of oxidant and enzyme release from alveolar macrophages, (3) recruitment and activation of polymorphonuclear leukocytes, and (4) stimulation of fibroblast proliferation and collagen synthesis.Tetrandrine is a bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloid derived from the Chinese herb Radix Stephania tetrandra. It has a molecular weight of 622.73 and an empirical formula of C38H420 6N2. The chemical structure of tetrandrine has been published previously by our laboratory (Castranova et al., 1991 a). Its structure is characterized by methoxy groups at C7 and C12 , uncharged nitrogens at N2 and N’2 and two 17-carbon ring members connected by a double oxygen bridge between Ca-C7 and C11-C12. Tetrandrine has been shown to reduce both silica-induced fibrosis and the elevation of lung collagen content in rats (Huang et al .. 1981; Yu et al., 1983; ldel, 1987). Furthermore, tetrandrine has been used as an antifibrotic agent in Chinese clinical trials (Li et al.. 1981 ). Preliminary results suggest that administration of tetrandrine to patients with silicosis results in substantial improvement of symptoms, increases in diffusion capacity, and decreases in the size of shadows on lung x rays."

The Krueger property was examined by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines in September 1943. The records of 23 old drill holes indicated an appreciable body of ore without delimiting the deposit. It appeared that additional drilling might increase this reserve sufficiently to justify mining. Accordingly, the Bureau of Mines drilled 5 churn-drill holes and 19 diamond-drill holes on the Krueger tract. The last of these holes concluding the Bureau?s project was completed in April 1947.

Owing to an upsurge in export earnings. Cameroon made substantial economic Progress in 1978 and 1979. With a real growth estimated at 6%, the gross domestic product (GDP) for 1979 surpassed $5 billion.2 Crude petroleum production was providing a new potential in 1978 and 1979 for achieving national self-sufficiency. Among other benefits, crude petroleum exports were helping to offset the escalating costs of refined petroleum imports and to reduce the 14% to 17% annual rate of inflation. Over the 4 years prior to 1978, Cameroon's petroleum imports increased by 12.1% in volume annually, while the import cost increased by 24.5% annually to about $105 million. Total export earnings for 1978 were $805 million,3 to which crude petroleum contributed $25.3 million and crude aluminum product exports contributed $25.9 million. Petroleum exports had increased to about $240 million in 1979 and were in third place after coffee and cacao. Total imports for 1978 were valued at nearly $1 billion. The volume of petroleum imports decreased in 1979 to 552,000 tons, compared with 622,000 tons in 1978. The European Economic Community (EEC) countries purchased over 75% of total Cameroonian exports and provided most of the Nation's imports. The United States purchased $12.4 million in petroleum exports from Cameroon in 1978. Domestic consumption of aluminum metal from imported Guinean alumina continued. to grow; thus exports of this metal to France (valued at $2 million in 1978) and Japan

Single crystal whiskers of ZrO2 and TiO2 were grown by solution and crystallization of these oxides in molten baths. Mixtures of Na2B407 and LiC1 were the most suitable growth media for zirconia. Sodium borate alone and Na2CO3 plus SiO2 were best suited for titania. The solubilities of zirconia and titania in molten sodium borate were determined, Whether zirconia whiskers were dendritic or nondendritic depended on the temperature used. The best single crystal whiskers were grown below 1,100° C. Titania whiskers always grew as single crystals. The tensile strengths of zirconia and titania whiskers were about 15,000 psi and 50,000 psi, respectively. Modulus of rupture was about 49,000 psi for zirconia whiskers and 75,000 psi for titania whiskers. Chemical analyses showed the zirconia and titania whiskers to be pure. The zirconia and titania whiskers were shown by X-ray analysis to be, respectively, baddeleyite and rutile.

Increasing use of continuous miners, especially the boring type, has focused attention on the inadequacy of face ventilation in coal mines. The bulk of the machine, the rapid advance of working faces, and the increased liberation of methane from the larger expanse of freshly exposed coal surfaces have created ventilation problems that were unknown with conventional mining equipment. Ignition of gas, especially that caused by machine bits striking hard rock or pyritic inclusions, have increased at an alarming rate. As the mines penetrate beds under thicker cover at an ever-increasing rate of face advance, this problem will probably increase unless face ventilation is improved. A previous survey, described in Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 5414, Auxiliary Ventilation of Continuous Miner Places, disclosed that auxiliary fans with tubing generally improved circulation of air and removal of gas at the face. The study here reported attempts to examine, face ventilation at various mines and to note any plan or innovation of. air coursing that industry might adopt to reduce the danger of gas ignition. "The use of trailing cables on cutting machines, loading machines, and similar electrically operated apparatus is recognized as a necessary adjunct to the economical operation of such units. On the other hand, such cables because of their liability to failure from being run over by cars, locomotives, and other track-operated equipment offer one of the greatest hazards - indeed, probably the worst hazard - met with in the operation and maintenance of permissible equipment. Therefore, the Bureau of Mines is seeking ways of making the use of trailing cables less hazardous.Recently the bureau conducted an extensive investigation of both concentric and duplex rubber-sheathed trailing cables at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station. The results of this investigation were published in two reports.3 4In a larger part of portable motor operations in mines a double-conductor cable can be used. The investigation already mentioned indicated that it is feasible to construct a 2-conductor cable that will stand considerable abuse, such as being run over by loaded cars or light-weight locomotives without producing dangerous arcing in the cable either from grounds or short circuits. There are conditions where more than two conductors are necessary, and in such instances it will probably be necessary to use a cable less resistant to this kind of abuse.Schedule 2C, covering the tests of electric motored equipment, was approved February, 1930. This schedule provides for performance tests on trailing cables as follows;Trailing Cable Performance: The following performance test, optional with the manufacturer, is established for determining the suitability of trailing cables for use on permissible equipment. Trailing cables that pass this test will be especially recommended for this service.The cable will be placed across the two rails of a track and a 4-wheeled 7-ton car will be run over it 50 times. The speed of the car shall be approximately 3-1/2 miles per hour and potential shall be applied to the cable during tests. The cable will be shifted in position after each passage of the car thus giving 100 places over which two wheels have passed. To warrant special recommendation of the Bureau, a cable must neither become short-circuited nor grounded either to the rails or wheels in more than 10 per cent of the 100 places.The Bureau of Mines is prepared to conduct tests as outlined in the foregoing paragraphs to determine the suitability of trailing cables for use on permissible equipment. Application for such tests should be made to the Director, Bureau of Mines, Washington, D. C. Each application should be accompanied by a check for $25.00, made payable to the Treasurer of the United States, to cover the expense of conducting the test on a given size and make of cable."
