The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Florida phosphate mining industry, investigated the dewatering of waste phosphatic slimes. Part of this investigation was to determine the electrophoretic mobilities and cation exchange capacities of the slimes. The mobilities and exchange capacities are reported for samples of slimes taken from 15 plants operating in the Florida land-pebble phosphate district that includes Polk,Hillsborough, Manatee, Hardee, and DeSoto Counties. The electrophoretic mobilities determined were all negative, ranging from -0.24 to -1.93 (micrometers per second) per (volt per centimeter). Also reported are frequency distributions of electrophoretic mobilities, electrophoretic mobilities of slime diluted with distilled water and electrophoretic mobilities of sand-slime mixtures. The cation exchange capacities ranged from 17 to 45 milliequivalents per 100 grams of slime solids.

In 1984, at the request of the Bureau of Land Management, the Bureau of Mines studied 7,000 acres of the 9,240-acre Little Blitzen Gorge Wilderness Study Area in Harney County, OR, to evaluate its mineral resources. The study area is dominated by a 1,500-ft-deep canyon that was carved by Pleistocene glaciers in gently westward-dipping homoclinal flows of Miocene Steens Basalt. The Bureau reviewed pertinent literature and county mining records During the field investigations, 18 rock samples were collected from basalt dikes, breccia, fractured or porphyritic flows, and 20 alluvial samples from gravel accumulations. Mercury anomalies from sampling by the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries could not be verified. The mercury might have originated -From the Pike Creek Formation, a known mercury-producing unit that may extend into the study area beneath the Steens Basalt. Any epithermal deposit at depth would be expensive to explore and develop.

1. The Investigation shows that there are six coal beds of major importance in McDowell County from the standpoint of present production - Pocahontas No. 3, Pocahontas No. 4, Pocahontas No. 5, Sewall, Beckley, and Pochontas No. 6 - and five beds of minor importance - Iaeger, Douglas, Welch, Pocahontas, No. 9, and Eagle. The Pocahontas No. 3 bed contains the largest remaining, known reserves. 2. Known measured, and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 174 inches and on 1,800 tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 2,217 Trillion short tons as of January 1, 1951. Of this total, 1,731 million short tons are in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager to make an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these area, such reserves should be added to he total estimated reserves.

INTRODUCTION The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) at its Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRC) is interested in the application of water mist sprays to extinguish diesel fie1 fires in underground mine diesel refueling areas. To this end experimental studies have been carried out on the extinguishment of diesel fuel fires at PRL's large enclosed fire suppression facility (FSP) at its Lake Lynn Laboratory (LLL). Two sizes of shallow fuel pans (3x3 ft and 5x7 ft) contained the fires, and a number of commercial mist spray nozzles (at roof locations) and spray/fire locations were tested (52 fires in all). Visual observations of the pool fire extinguishment process by the overhead sprays with an infra-red sensitive videocom suggests that there are two distinct actions involved in extinguishment due to two different transport mechanisms by which the water droplets can enter the fire plume. First, is a direct injection of water droplets into the plume from overhead. This is believed to involve larger water drops and leads to an extinguishment time of several minutes. Second, is an indirect injection process involving small water drops which are entrained in the sideways air flow that feeds oxygen to the fire. This second process apparently leads to relatively fast quenching of the fire in less than 1 minute - a highly useful attribute for a fire protection system. This paper describes a relatively simple parametric model for the indirect water injection process, and defines the critical spray conditions for achieving rapid quenching of the pool fire. While the model is consistent with the pool fire data obtained to date, the PRL studies are continuing with more complex pool fire scenarios. It remains to be seen if this simple parametric approach applies to these future fire tests. THEORETICAL Critical Drop Size In the two-dimensional representation of figure I, an oil pool fire is considered to be a cone whose base is the vaporizing liquid oil surface having an area n?, above which exists a fire plume diffusion flame) of height, L. The rising plume induces a horizontal air flow into the side of the plume supplying the oxygen necessary for propagating gas phase combustion reactions. Water droplets suspended in the air around the plume will tend to follow the horizontal air flows into the plume. "An important, function of the U.S. Bureau of Mines is to instruct miners in first aid, and as a means of promoting interest in it first-aid contests are held under the auspices of the Bureau, usually in coop; ration with other interested organizations, especially the American Red Cross, the National Safety Council and various operators' and Miners' associations. It was early found that the method of judging first-aid meets is one of the most vital factors in determining the degree of success of the meet.It may be safely stated that there is no method for the judging of first-aid contests that has proved ideal. A method that would give the most uniform judging would necessitate the rating of each team by the same judge or committee of judges and, in order that a judge may rate a team satisfactorily, he should see that team perform several events and average the ratings. Such a procedure is not practicable where there are many terms entered in the contest, as it would prolong the meet indefinitely. To overcome this objection the method has been tried of assigning separate judges to each team but this brings in a new factor the individuality of the various judges, some of whom rate closely, others loosely. The next development was to average the judging by having the judges rate different teams for each event. This would seem to solve the problem out it has been found, after using the method over a wide area for a considerable period of time, that the differences in the judging are too marked to be at all satisfactory. The next development was to appoint a committee of chief judges three to five in number especially trained and experienced, to aid the individual judges in rating the teams. This method has proved satisfactory at small meets but, as committee must review the work of each judge on each event, it has not been deemed feasible for a large meet."

Results of the mineral resource study of the Upper Priest Lake RARE II study area indicate a low potential for the discovery and economic recovery of silver and lead in the Prichard Formation near contacts with the Kaniksu Batholith in the vicinity of the Mountain Chief Mine (fig. 1). Silver and lead minerals locally occur disseminated and in irregular quartz fissure-fillings in the Prichard Formation. Between 18^6 and 1967, 105 lode raining claims were located in the study area. The area was designated for "further planning" in the Final Environmental statement but was later changed to "nonwilderness" by President Carter after work was scheduled for the area.

This report describes Bureau of Mines experiments in gasifying coal in a helium-heated tube-coil reactor. The purpose of this work was to investigate helium as a medium for transferring heat from a nuclear reactor to gasify coal or for use as high-temperature process heat. A laboratory-scale system was designed and constructed to demonstrate feasibility. In preliminary tests with this system, in which the coal was fed as a water slurry, the helium-heating and recycling equipment operated well. Considerable difficulty was experienced, however, in preheating coal slurry to the desired range of 400° - 1,000° F. without plugging the preheaters. Five different preheaters plugged with coke or with salts leached from the coal. The longest operating period wan 12 hours. These difficulties were partly due to the relatively small equipment and flow rates. The gasifier processed l pound per hour of low-rank coal at 300 p.s.i.g. and 1,800° F., with the carbon conversion limited to 20 to 30 percent by the short residence time and slow heat-transfer rate.

On November 20, 1968, a massive explosion rocked the underground workings of Mountaineer Coal Co.?s Farmington No. 9 Mine in West Virginia. Of the 99 miners who were working in the mine at the time of the explosion, only 21 survived and escaped the mine. This group included eight who were rescued from the Mahan?s Run air shaft. Nearly 40 years after the event, researchers from the NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory conducted oral history interviews with two of the eight survivors rescued from the shaft. The Farmington No. 9 Mine disaster ultimately led to passage of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 (amended in 1977).

Available statistics on 1991 worldwide consumption of selected non fuel mineral commodities shown in table 12 indicate downturns for all but 3 of the 15 listed commodities. It should be stressed that in most instances, the consumption declines were primarily the result of lower levels of use in the former U.S.S.R. and the former centrally planned economy nations of Eastern Europe. However, several commodities suffered use cutbacks in market economy countries. In the case of the nonferrous metals covered In the table, the differences in performance between market economy countries and the former centrally planned economy states are immediately evident from the table itself. Among these important commodities, refined lead, primary magnesium, and refined tin registered downturns for market economy countries as well as among the centrally planned economy countries. Also notably, cadmium use showed no significant change from 1990 levels in either group of countries. Global consumption of iron ore fell by 3.4 % or about 31 million tons, and this was a greater decline than that logged for production of marketable iron ore and related products, which was down by only 3.0% or almost 28.2 million tons. Thus, it would seem that for another year there was a net addition to stocks. The 1991 drop in iron and steel scrap use was about 5.5 % or about 18 million tons, on the percentage basis somewhat greater than the 4.8% or 36.9 million ton drop in global steel production. Although consumption of iron ore and iron and steel scrap are not broken down by region in table 12, it seems almost assured that the pattern of 1990 continued into 1991: drops in use in the former U.S.S.R. and Eastern Europe were the overwhelmingly dominant declines and accounted for much, although not all, of the global decline, whereas among market economy countries as a group, there were upturns for both materials. On a global basis, it would appear that the slight shift in the ratio of pig iron to scrap in steel furnace charges noted in 1990 continued into 1991, this shift being toward a slightly larger proportion of pig iron with a corresponding decline in the share accounted for by scrap.

The Federal Bureau of Mines has conducted research in support of the National Aeronautical and Space Administration's (NASA) Apollo program to acquire fundamental scientific and engineering knowledge of lunar-mineral resources for NASA's Office of Advanced Research and Technology. Equipment and techniques were developed to conduct soil shear tests in a simulated lunar environment. Shear tests performed with this equipment in ultrahigh vacuum and controlled laboratory atmosphere showed that simulated lunar soil increased in strength in the simulated lunar environment.

Cost System The cost system reported here is a suite of computer programs which incorporates the logic and information flow structure as outlined in earlier chapters. Specifically, computer programs have been devel¬oped to: 1. compute labor, operating, and capital costs, 2. summarize cost and production data, and 3. compute the minimum acceptable selling price for coal. While the cost system can be executed independently, it is de¬signed primarily for use with the Master Design Simulator and there¬fore must conform to the overall system hardware. The computer model is written in Fortran IV for use with the IBM System 360/370 computers as well as with compatible units such as the Univac 1110 and CDC-6600. For ease in error detection and program modification, the model was constructed with a main routine and eight subroutines. The main routine reads and stores the data necessary for the cost computations and calls the subroutines in logical sequence. The subroutines perform the cost computations and data adjustments for reporting purposes. Each subroutine performs the cost computations for its particular com¬ponent of the cost cycle. The program operations are described in the following narrative outline. Control Subsystem As previously described, the main routine is a passive element, reading and storing input data and directing execution to the active subroutines for cost calculations. Zinc smelting is frequently termed a ba.ckward art. The term is hardly true, for great progress has been made in recent years in the design and in the thermal efficiency of the retort furnace, in the quality of retorts, in the recovery of zinc, and in the ability to treat more impure and complex ores. The fact remains, however, that the peculiar physical and chemical properties of zinc have delayed such immense advances-large smelting units, high recovery, lowunit costs, and ability to treat low-grade ores-as have been made in the metallurgy of lead and copper. In current retort-smelting practice, the ores, if carbonates, are calcined to remove carbon dioxide; or, if sulphides, are roasted to remove sulphur. The sulphur must be eliminated as completely as possible, usually to less than 1 per cent. This means that the roast must be continued for a long time at a high temperature, with resulting high cost and small capacity per furnace. The roasted ore is mixed with about 50 per cent of its weight of reducer, which may be fine coke, anthracite, or nonbituminous coal. This mixture is charged into horizontal fire-clay retorts. The retorts used in this country are about 8 inches in internal diameter by 4 feet in length and hold 50 or 60 pou~ds of ore. The diameter of the retort is limited by the tirrie required for the heat to penetrate to the center of the charge; the length by the strength of the retort, which at the high temperature employed can not support the weight of the charge if the span is more than about 50 inches. The retorts are heated externally by coal, natural gas, qr ·producer gas to a temperature of 1,200° C. or more. The zinc oxide is reduced to zinc, which is volatile at this temperature, and passes into a conical fire-clay condenser. attached to one end of the retort, where it conde_nses to liquid zinc and is removed. Twenty-four hours are required for distillation, and because of the low heat conductivity of the retort walls 11.nd of the ore charge itself, the heat efficiency even of the most modern regenerative furnacei;; is only about 12 per cent. The retorts have a short life, 30 to 6Q days, at the high temperature required-; zinc losses are heavy, usually 10 per cent or more; and the proportion of impurities in the retort charge must be carefully controlled to prevent the rapid corrosion of retorts. For these reasons, much work has been done in an e:ff ort to, find cheaper and more efficient methods o.f recovering zinc from its ores. Various methods have been proposed for smelting in the blast furnace. Some of these contemplated the production of zinc vapor and its condensation to liquid; others attempted to produce liquid zinc directly by smelting under pressure. It is now realized that fundamental difficulties render these proposals impracticable. The electric furnace for smelting offers obvious advantages in the way of the efficient utilization of energy, large units, easy attainment of high temperatures, and the possibility of treating complex ores. E. H. and A. H. Cowles first suggested a design for an electric furnace for the reduction of zinc ores and patented their process in 1885. Their attention was soon directed to other uses for their furnace and nothing further of importance was done in the electric smelting of zinc until about 1900. Several investigators then started work upon various processes and had more or less success. The chief difficulty they encountered was the impossibility of obtaining more, than a small amount of the zinc as liquid metal because most of the zinc vapor condensed as blue powder. Interest in the electrothermic metallurgy of zinc increased, many patents on processes and furnace design were taken out, and the literature on the subject grew, until in 1914 and 1915 the problem seemed to be approaching solution. About this time the hydrometallurgy of zinc, the development of which had been lagging somewhat behind that of the electrothermic metallurgy, sprang into the limelight and a commercial process was soon perfected. This rapid development, perhaps aided by the war premium on the high-grade spelter produced by electrolytic deposition, distracted attention from electric smelting to some extent, though progress continued. With the perfection and standardization of the electrolytic process has come a better realization of its limitations, especially the necessity for large-scale operation ·and the difficulty of obtaining high extraction. Because of these limitations the electrothermic metallurgy of zinc still has a field of its own and in fac-t promises to become a strong competitor of both hydrometallurgy and retort smelting except under conditions highly favorable to the latter methods. Because of the imperfections of the retort and electrolytic processes and the promise that the electric furnace offers in overcoming these imperfections, the. United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, has undertaken a study of the electrothermic metallurgy of zinc.

The overall disabling work injury experience, excluding office- workers, at nometal mines and mills during the period 1961-63, as reported to the Bureau of Mines by operators, was 77 fatal and 7,201 nonfatal injuries during an aggregate worktime of 335,029,685 man- hours. These injuries, fatal and nonfatal combined, occurred at a frequency rate of 21.72 per million man-hours, comprising 0.23 for the fatal and 21.49 for the nonfatal injuries. The combined severity rate of the disabilities was 2,312 days lost or charged per million man-hours, consisting of 1,379 for the fatal and 933 of the nonfatal injuries, The average severity of all disabilities during 1961-63, was 106 days per injury, The number of days lost or charged, excluding officeworkers, at nonmetal mines and mills during 1961-63, was 462,000 days charged to fatal injuries and 312,461 days lost from nonfatal injuries. The outstanding causes for fatal injuries were explosions (18 fatalities occurred in a major mine-explosion disaster in a potash mine in Utah in 1963) and falls of rock or ore from back or side, while most nonfatal injuries were caused by handling materials, slips or falls of persons, haulage, and machinery. The parts of the body most frequently injured during the period 1961-63 were the trunk, hand and finger, and foot and toe, An average of 52,810 men were at work daily, There were 20 nonfatal disabling injuries reported for office- workers at nonmetal mines and mills during the period 1961-63 during an aggregate worktime of 23,088,496 man-hours, These injuries occur- red at a frequency rate of 0.87 per million man-hours, There were no fatal injuries reported.

Owing to the rapid growth of the perlite industry in recent years, the Bureau of Mines has received numerous requests for information relative to the possible harmful effects of breathing dust resulting from the processing and use of perlite. As published information on the composition of perlite is rather meager, consisting chiefly of conventional chemical analyses, samples of crude and expanded perlite from 9 deposits in 6 Western States were studied. Crude perlite ores were examined petrographically and analyzed by chemical, spectrographic, and X-ray-diffraction methods. Sized crude and expanded perlites were analyzed chemically for total free and combined silica content.

Since 1922, when a brief report3 on the production and utilization of garnet was issued by the Bureau of Mines, there have been a number of interest—in developments in the technology of that mineral. Greater activity has been displayed in mining, new mills have been erected, and more attention has been paid to improvements in milling so that a more efficient and economical recovery of garnet has been possible. These activities have resulted in larger production; therefore, attempts are being made to broaden the market for garnet abrasives, and to find new uses for the unusual combination of physical properties than this mineral possesses. The writers have recently completed a field study of the occurrence, methods of mining and milling of garnet, and the manufacture and utilization of abrasive garnet products. This preliminary report indicates the most important sources of garnet, the methods by which it is recovered, and the manner in which it is recovered, and the manner in which it is utilized.Chemical and Physical Properties.The term ""garnet"" is applied to a closely related group of minerals which crystallize in the caste forms and possess similar physical properties, although their chemical composition may exhibit greater variation. The chemical composition of the garnet group may be represented by the general formula 3R"" O.R""' 203.3S102, in which R represents the bivalent elements calcium, magnesium, in the manganese state and ferrous iron, R"" represents the trivalent elements, ferric iron, aluminum and chromium in the chromie state. An account of the amorphous substitution of the different bivalent and trivalent elements, specimens whose composition may be represented by a definite formula are rare, the composition of any given specimen generally exhibits treat complexity.

As part of the Bureau of Mines critical and strategic minerals program in Alaska, 34 high-purity chromian spinel samples were analyzed for trace and major element geochemistry and mineralogy. The samples were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, and chemical techniques. Systematic differences in chemistry are evident when samples collected from the Chugach Mountains and their related extension are compared with chromian spinel samples collected from interior Alaska. Compared with the Chugach samples, the interior Alaska samples have higher average amounts of A1203, Fe203, Ti02, and NiO, have lower average amounts of FeO and Cr203, and exhibit greater dispersion in values. Considerable mineralogical variability of chromian spinel exists between and within individual Alaskan chromite-bearing ultramafic complexes. Of 34 samples analyzed, 25 samples are magnesiochromite, 5 are chromite, 3 are spinel, and 1 is hercynite. As a group the interior Alaska samples have a smaller average unit cell dimension than the Chugach group of samples. The chemical and mineralogical differences between the two groups of samples can be attributed to different genetic histories and may have implications for locating chromian spinel deposits amenable to standard beneficiating techniques.

THIS report gives results of an investigation of the carbonizing properties of the following eastern Kentucky coals: Elkhorn No. I bed, No. 28 mine, Wayland, Floyd County; Elkhorn No. 2 bed, Turner No. 5 mine, Drift, Flood County; Leatherwood (Haddix No. 5) bed, Leatherwood mine, Leatherwood. Perry County; and Harlan bed, Path Fork mine, Path Fork, Harlan County. The carbonizing properties were determined by Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) tests at 800° and 900° C. and by expansion tests in the sole-heated oven. Plastic properties were determined by tests in the Gieseler and Davis plastometers. The coals were tested singly and as blends with 20- and 30-percent low-volatile Pocahontas No. 3 coal. The dry, mineral-matter-free, fixed-carbon content of the carbonizing samples ranged from 56.7 percent for Elkhorn No. 2 to 59.7 percent for Leatherwood, and the heating values on the moist, mineral-matter-free basis ranged from 14,420 B. t. u. per pound for Elkhorn No. 2 to 14,720 for Harlan. The percentage of ash ranged from 2.9 to 6.1. The fluidity of three coals, measurer. In the Gieseler plastometer, ranged from 230 to 670 dial divisions; the fluidity of Elkhorn No. 2 could not be determined by this method. Blending lowered the fluidity of each coal; the fluidity of the blends containing 20 and 30 percent Pocahontas No. 3 ranged from 16 to 53 and from 8 to 17 dial divisions, respectively. Agglutinating values determined on silicon carbide-coal mixtures in the ratio 15:1 ranged from 3.8 to 6.3.

"INTRODUCTION The Copper Flat area of the Central mining district, Grant County, N. Mex., has been visited by numerous engineers 4/ of the Bureau of Mines and geologists 5/ of the Federal Geological Survey. In December 1944 the Bureau. 6/ proposed that geophysical work be done in that area in order to locate favorable sites for future company exploratory and development work. This geo-physical work was begun early in 1945 but never fully completed because of insufficient funds. The engineers who made the survey recommended that more work be done, especially to locate the bottom of the Copper Flat laccolith by resistivity-depth surveys. All known minable zinc-lead ore bodies had been found above this laccolith in the Copper Flat mine, but it was thought that other minable ore deposits should occur in favorable limestones beneath it. The geophysicists also recommended core drilling beneath the laccolith.In the summer of 1946, following some mapping by S. G. Lasky of the Federal Geological Survey, funds were appropriated for a Bureau of Mines project in the Copper Flat area. The project was completed in June 1947. 8/"

The study area, which comprises 11,500 acres, includes the 9,610-acre Whitewater Wilderness Study Area, in the California Desert Conservation Area, 15 miles northwest of Palm Springs, CA. The U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluation of mineral resources is based on examination of prospects and mineralized areas during the spring of 1981. The Whitewater study area is mainly underlain by granodiorite to quartz diorite and their gneissic equivalents in an igneous-metamorphic complex. Late Tertiary sedimentary and volcanic rocks locally overlie the crystalline complex in the eastern part of the study area. The study area lies between branches of the San Andreas fault system.
