The overall mineral assemblage of the Broken Hill orebody is similar to that of a skarn. However unlike the classical skarns it does not represent contact metamorphism of pre-existing limestone beds. It is a stratiform accumulation of exhalative-sedimentary silica, sulphides, (Ca, Fe, Mn) silicates and carbonates, fluoride and phosphate that has later undergone regional metamorphism. The resulting development of coarse-grained quartz, sphalerite, galena, rhodonite, bustamite, mixed carbonates, fluorite, apatite and many minor phases has produced a sulphide-rich skarn- like mass that like many others of its kind, might best be referred to as a stratiform skarn. Recent investigations of occurrences of this type are showing that the incidence of concentrations of particular metamorphic minerals in and adjacent to such orebodies are closely related to bedding and to former sedimentary facies patterns. From this it appears that the mineral assemblages may be used to deduce not only the nature of the materials laid down in the beds, but also the physico-chemical conditions under which sedimentation took place. Several stratiform deposits, including Broken Hill, are used as examples to show that variations in these conditions may have a profound influence on the subsequent response of the rock to regional metamorphism and hence on the mineral assemblages that finally develop.

DuPont is a chemical and energy multi-national of approximately 90,000 employees. Often regarded as the world leader in injury reduction and process safety management, DuPont operate 140 manufacturing sites around the globe. Conoco is a wholly owed subsidiary of DuPont which is involved in oil, gas and coal exploration.   Throughout this paper I will discuss DuPont statistics, developing a safety culture and training process as well as discussing possible short comings in the New Zealand safety focus. I will conclude with my recommended improvements and issues for New Zealand companies to focus on.   It is very difficult to compare DuPont and New Zealand statistics through lack of compatibility in recording methods and my ability to interpret ACC's Injury Statistics. However through considering DuPont's statistics, and comparing them to your own companies or departments, you will agree they are indeed impressive. I hope that by discussing DuPont's safety philosophy, and possible shortfalls within New Zealand Legislation many of you will find ideas and inspiration which will help you to further reduce your own injury rates.

Zinifex Rosebery Mine is a lead-zinc underground mining operation located at the base of Mount Black, on the West Coast of Tasmania. Mining activities at the Rosebery Mine have been undertaken for over 100 years, and it has been operating in its current form for over 60 years. A large surface and underground exploration drilling program over the last 18 months has increased the mineÆs expected mine life from five to 12 years, with expectations that over the next 18 months as the program continues this will swell to 20 plus years. Zinifex Ltd secured Rosebery Mine in April 2004 and commissioned a detailed life-of-mine (LOM) study on all aspects of the operation. One of the most detailed sections of this report was on the state of the current ventilation system. It was identified in this report that for mining at the current depth of approximately 1100 m to continue a minimum 30 per cent increase in ventilation quantity was essential, as well as a likely requirement for a refrigerant cooling plant for each of the two deepest panels, the K and P lenses. It was identified that Zinifex did not have personnel with the expertise in underground refrigeration to manage and implement a project of this nature. A second report was commissioned with Bluhm Burton Engineering (BBE), a South African firm specialising in both surface and underground large-scale refrigeration plants. BBE concluded that two refrigeration plants were required to provide the necessary cooling power in the lower sections of the mine. In 2005, with BBE as technical consultants, Zinifex Rosebery Mine embarked on a project to commission two underground refrigeration units capable of lowering the wet bulb temperature at the decline face by four degrees centigrade. A pillar 'is a block of coal left in the first working of a coal seam for the purpose of supporting the superincumbent strata in such a manner that the winning out roadways will be safe to traverse by men and by the coal transport system.PRINCIPLES OF PILLAR EXTRACTION.The size of a pillar is chiefly dependent on the depth of cover, and in a lesser degree on the nature of the coal, or the condition in which the seam has been laid down. In a seam at 1,100ft. depth of cover, and assuming a spec'ific gravity of 2.5 overall for the cover strata, a pressure of 1,200lb. per sq. in. is the loading on the top surface of the coal seam before mining begins.When mining commences, and as the pillars are formed, an increased load is imposed on the coal left in the pillars, according to the percentage of coal extracted in the first working. Thus, if 25% extraction is taken in the first working, the load on the pillars is theoretically increased from 1,200lb. per sq. in. to 1,600lb. per sq. in. over the area mined. If this state of things went on indefinitely it would not be possible wholly to extract a pillar because of the extreme pressure tliat would be thrown on the diminishing portion; but, fortunately, another element, that of time, enters into and assists the process of extraction.If the superimposed strata were of an entirely plastic nature, this time factor could not operate, as the cover weight would settle instantly on the remaining portion of the p'illar and finally overwhelm it. The cover strata above a pillar generally have a certain rigidity which does not allow the superimposed weight to settle instantly on the pillar fraction, and it requires a period of time to elapse before the extra weight is felt by the pillar.The time factor varies widely, and is governed entirely by local conditions; it can only be determined by experience gained on the spot or in close proximity to the area of operations. It is dependent on the strength of the strata and its characteristics under bridging conditions.It is, therefore, logical to assume that the more rapidly a pillar can be extracted the greater will be the safety factor and also the percentage of recovery of coal.Up to the present time, the operation of the extraction of pillars in this country has been, with a few exceptions, a manual one, and before mechanization of Collieries can be fully accomplished, the process will have to be performed mecharrically.

Mineral resource estimation is commonly based on the accumulation of a series of local estimates. At times, the distribution of these grade estimates is not appropriate to the grade distribution of the data on which the estimates are based. Mineral resource grade estimation has an increased potential of being in error as the grade variability increases. As the mineral commodity value increases, greater grade variability within the mineral resource is tolerated. This paper directs its attention to mineral properties where the data average grade is 20 per cent or more than the data median grade at a specific cut-off grade. A mineral resource estimate is enhanced if it is supported by graphs which demonstrate that the sample data have been separated into appropriate geological domains. Each geological domain has a unique grade distribution signature, which can be graphically demonstrated simply and objectively. This signature will usually be evident well before the Indicated mineral resource estimates are available. The paper looks at the use of the log probability and MedAve plots to assess how effective domaining has been. It further outlines how the MedAve plot can be used to assess the integrity of the mineral resource grade estimate within a geological domain with the data on which it is based. The paper suggests that the overall grade of a mineral resource at any cut-off grade will be closer to the data median grade rather than the data average grade. Tips are provided to ensure that the odds reflected in the data grade distribution are not ignored and hence the risk that the project is affected by unrealistic estimates of the overall mineral resource grade is reduced.

Excavation engineering involves complex processes for primary and secondary extraction of materials. The shovel excavators bear varying mechanical energy input and stress loading across the working bench during excavation. These varying mechanical energy input and stress loading effects cause significant wear and tear and fatigue failure in equipment components. These effects further result in unplanned downtimes, reduced efficiency and high production costs. In addition, the mechanical and electrical control systems must be operated in efficient profiles to generate maximum outputs and efficiency from these excavators. Efficient technologies are therefore required to solve these problems in order to reduce production costs and increase efficiency. In this paper, the authors develop a rigorous simulator for a hydraulic shovel in a surface mining environment. The finite element model is used to capture the stress profile within the shovel components during excavation, such as, the bucket, stick and boom assemblies. The profiles are classified into normal, critical and extreme ranges, with appropriate corrective measures to avoid extreme loading conditions. The loading capability of shovel excavators can be examined by assessing its structural strength against all possible maximum loads working on the equipment. The dynamic model is used to define efficient profiles of the critical structural components of hydraulic shovels during digging operation. This assessment is used to locate the maximum possible loads and the critical sections of the structures. The method presented in this paper forms the basis for developing comprehensive simulator models for efficient shovel operations in constrained mining environments.

Waste rock piles containing reactive sulfide minerals can serve as long-term sources of acid mine drainage (AMD). Within these piles, many physical, geochemical and biological processes can contribute to the production of AMD. The flow of water, for example, depends on internal pile structure, which depends on the dumping methods used to construct the pile. In this paper, the internal structure and grain size distribution of typical waste rock piles are first reviewed with respect to their effect on internal water flow. A numerical model is then applied to simulate unsaturated flow within a waste pile assuming two primary waste materials, different atmospheric conditions and several geometric configurations. The simulations suggest that water movement can be controlled by introducing fine-grained material layers within the coarser host material. However, these layers should not be horizontal because they can lead to localised high-saturation regions as well as preferential flow favouring the production of AMD. A shallow slope towards the pile boundary may be introduced to force drainage to the outside while maintaining low saturation within the interior, thus reducing the production of AMD.

The Fimiston reserve is being depleted at the rate of one million ounces per year; most of which is processed by the Fimiston plant, with the remainder being stockpiled. As for most other large open cut mines around the world, Fimiston has an excellent dispatch and tracking system. Reconciliation is used to determine how the various models used in mine planning (such as a reserve, budget and schedule models) are tracking against production. It is also used to gauge the performance of grade control estimation against production; however, analysing the results of this can be complicated and, at times, misleading. The reconciliation process involves adjusting the monthly production data to equal the mill reported tonnes and grade, plus the change in stockpiles. This adjusted number is then compared to the grade control reported tonnes and grade, the scheduled model (monthly planning model) tonnes and grade and against budget (Reserve) tonnes and grade. This paper includes explanations of all assumptions made in the reconciliation process, including the end of month closing stocks balance, the application of adjustment factors to the dispatch data to create a new balanced set of production data and the monthly sign off to comply with the Sarbanes-Oxley requirements of the North American owners. The reserve is reconciled by proved and probable classification. This tool is used to assess the robustness of the classification scheme utilised and identify any reconciliation issues as they arise. Within the Fimiston deposit there are still issues that are clouded by the assumptions made concerning the scale of observation, poor data support and the mining of the narrow lode areas of the deposit. The declared ore mined (DOM) number (which is defined in the paper) can be significantly affected by these assumptions, and these need to be clearly stated and understood when looking at the reconciliation data. The DOM tonnes and grade is a good indicator of real mine performance as it adjusts mined tonnes and grade to take into account the milled tonnes and grade each month, and prevents cumulative errors from building up in mine predicted dispatch numbers or end of period stockpiles. This number allows monthly monitoring of the mine to mill performance and allows valid comparisons to be made back to budgets and reserves over a period of time. KCGM uses three month rolling averages to monitor performance against reserve and budget models. This ensures that monthly distortions in the figures due to stockpiling issues or over mining in a particular period do not lead to false conclusions. Reconciliation performance over a longer period (12 - 18 months) is used to adjust reserve models should significant variance be observed. By closely monitoring the reconciliation performance at the Fimiston operation, fine tuning of all aspects of the grade estimation process from reserve through to grade control can be made. This allows the most accurate data to be used when planning from reserve data for the Life of Mine Plan through to grade control data for short-term mill feed.

Magneto flotation is a recently developed method aimed at simultaneous utilisation of the magnetic and flotation properties of minerals in separation processes. In this method, magnetic minerals are prevented from reporting to the froth product while non-magnetic minerals are being floated. With suitable ores, this makes it possible to reduce or entirely eliminate the cleaning and scavenging operations that are otherwise necessary in conventional flotation and magnetic separation systems. This paper describes the testing of magneto flotation on a Canadian magnetite ore. The ore sample used in the experimental work contained a total of 32.89 per cent Fe of which 87.60 per cent was magnetic in the form of magnetite. Magnetoflotation yielded, in a single step, a final concentrate assaying 69.10 per cent Fe and with an overall recovery of 84.84 per cent representing a magnetic iron recovery of 96.39 per cent. Comprehensive comparisons were made with conventional magnetic separation and flotation, and it was found that with these methods at least four processing steps were required to achieve results similar to those obtained with single-stage Magnetoflotation.

This paper presents an overview of the researches carried out in our laboratory on the application of plasma in recovery of alloy elements from waste slags and the treatment of lean ores, which are examples of advanced materials processing. After briefly reviewing the early work on the reduction of nickel, chromium, manganese, vanadium and titanium oxides, and a short investigation of the reduction of titanium oxide from the slag resulting from the blast furnace smelting of a titanomagnetite ore, the paper concentrates on the more recent studies on the reduction of an Australian scheelite. In some of these experiments, aluminium was used in addition to carbon as a reductant, in virtually all cases complete reduction was achieved within a relatively few minutes even with carbon alone during plasma processing. It therefore appears that this technique provides a possible processing route to facilitate the recovery of valuable alloying elements from non-traditional sources, or to permit process step elimination.

Mining, like most other businesses, is based upon capital assets; and the primary cap- ital of any mining company is its ore reserve. A company's survival and growth is, thus, dep- endent upon its ability to replace, increase, redistribute and to diversify its ore reserves. A Kennecott executive addressing a group of geologists in 1957 stated, "Management expects a geologist to find ore! That is the primary objective and the justification of the geologist in the minerals industry. There is no other function that we can rationalize." This is, however, a restricted point of view, and one which I an sure is not fully shared by mining executives or mine operators at the present time. Ore reserves are 'made' as well as 'found' and the geologist contributes to this process. A mining geologist engages in activity in- volving the study of geology in connection with the total mining operation. His major task is the adaption of geological knowledge of ore de- posits and rock behaviour to mining needs, and the application of principles of the science of geology to specific problems of finding, develop- ing and extracting of ore bodies.

Since its formation in Papua New Guinea and raising of A$2 million in 1980, Niugini Mining Limited (NML) has grown to a company capitalised on the Australian Stock Exchange at about A$350 million. In 1995 the company produced some 237 000 ounces of gold, 700 000 ounces of silver and nearly 5000 tonnes of copper from its operations at Red Dome, in North Queensland and San Cristobal in The Atacama Desert of Northern Chile. This production contrasts with Niugini Mining's first mining venture at Mt Victor in the Eastern Highlands of PNG which yielded 20 000 ounces of gold and 11 600 of silver between 1987 and 1989. Following the formation of an exploration joint venture in 1982 with Kennecott Explorations (Australia) Ltd, now a subsidiary of RTZ, Niugini Mining's early recognition of the gold potential of volcanic rocks at plate margins led to discovery of the Lihir deposit in July 1982. This deposit containing about 42 million ounces of gold in resources, is one of the largest undeveloped gold deposits in the world. Following raising of equity funds through the float of Lihir Gold Ltd and debt finance in 1995, construction of the mine at a cost of US$673 million is now underway with first full-scale production at approximately 600 000 ounces of gold per year expected in early- 1998.

Since its invention by Professor Klaus Schonert of the University of Clausthal, Germany, high pressure rolls comminution has attained near total acceptance as the preferred method of size reduction in the cement industry. Over 300 units have been manufactured worldwide. At locations where the system has been installed, considerable energy savings have been realised. These energy savings are generally in the range of 20 to 30 per cent compared to conventional ball mill circuits. However up to 50 per cent power saving has been achieved at some installations. This technology, with the exception of the diamond industry, has up to now had only limited success in ore processing. This has mainly been attributable to the abrasiveness of ores encountered in this industry leading to high wear rates. These high wear rates have given rise to an unacceptably short life time of the wear surface of the rolls, requiring regular replacement. A new wear surface has been developed which has shown to give a ten-fold increase in service life over conventional surfaces. This, together with developments made in machine design now give the units the ability to attain the high availabilities demanded by the mining industry, and therefore to allow this industry to achieve the considerable operating cost savings offered by the high pressure rolls.

This paper overviews the recent research progress in predicting cutting performance using fracture mechanics principles. It is emphasised that rock fragmentation due to cutting is mainly a process of chip formation resulting from crack initiation and propagation or crack interaction for multi-tool cutting. This process can be simulated by using the well developed fracture mechanics criteria coupled to numerical methods. Fracture toughness is shown to be an important and useful parameter in quantifying cutting performance and in designing cutting tools. The paper concludes with discussions on the dynamic effects involved in rock cutting processes which should be taken into account for optimum cutting efficiency and tool design.

Existing production facilities are constantly looking at ways to increase capacity. Many recent solutions have focused on the implementation of capital and infrastructure projects. It is accepted that capital expansions are frequently necessary for production gains; however, in many cases existing assets have the potential to deliver substantially better throughput than they are currently achieving. By focusing on automation of production control systems, production reporting and business processes substantial gains can be achieved utilising existing assets. This potential can be realised quickly and has been proven across several sites and industries. In the Pilbara region of Western Australia throughput gains of between two per cent and 25 per cent (translating to millions of tonnes per annum) have been achieved from existing assets using the methodologies discussed. The improvement process involves evaluating the entire production chain from the time the ore arrives at the plant to the time it is dispatched. A technical evaluation of the performance of the control system and plant automation interfaces to upstream and downstream processes is conducted. The relationship of these processes to the business systems and the human interface to the systems is reviewed to ensure a complete picture of the system is understood. Technical evaluation targets include: individual equipment operation, the engineering level of control systems, feed controls, etc; managing recirculating loads, surge capacities, dynamic inventories as well as management of in-feed systems and integration into yard and out-feed systems; and communication flow between control and other systems, data alignment between rail and shipping schedules, yard systems, sales systems and maintenance systems including such fundamentals as truck dispatch links to plant control. In parallel with the technical evaluation, business system evaluation takes place, including analysis of the operational systems, methods and personnel.

The tendency of the concentrate to ignite was studied using four techniques, namely, laminar flow furnace, fluid bed, thermal analysis and boat-in-furnace. Exothermic activity occurred at two temperatures: minor activity in the vicinity of 200¦C, major activity at 330-350¦C. The low temperature reaction was due to the ignition of a small amount of free sulphur while the major activity was associated with the ignition of the sulphide minerals, notably pyrite. To avoid ignition of the sulphide minerals, the gas temperature should not exceed 300¦C and the oxygen content of the gas phase should be as low as possible. It was shown that little of the arsenic in the concentrate entered the gas phase during drying.

This paper contends that optimisation of energy resources through active control and predictive simulation modelling is possible, and that such monitoring leads to large savings in the electricity costs of hot mines (where refrigeration has to be employed). In addition, active monitoring and control can positively affect the establishment of a safe, healthy and productive working environment. In the entire optimisation process certain guidelines were set to ensure that the requirements of the Mine Health and Safety Act were met (South Africa). Varying the quantity of air supplied underground by means of variable speed drive (VSD) fans is one of the crucial factors in the interactive approach towards the optimisation of ventilation, as is refrigeration and the pumping requirements associated with refrigeration. This article highlights the interaction between the amount of air supplied and the effect it has on refrigeration requirements underground. This article also considers the effect that this would have on contaminant control. Various tools are available for ventilation and cooling design for mining. A lot of these tools are based on the assumption of steady state conditions and do not take into account instantaneous changes in conditions, day-to-day, or hour-to-hour (such as for temperature and contaminants). They also do not take into account the optimisation of energy resources related to the creation of the acceptable underground conditions. With these tools worst-case and best-case scenarios are identified, and strategic decisions are made accordingly. Currently, the amount of the fresh air, the velocity of the air, and its general temperature in the mine are only changed when one production phase changes into another (or when unacceptable conditions occur as a result of poor design or neglect). This means that during a specific production phase (which can last for several months), there can be an oversupply, or undersupply, of energy resources, which will obviously affect the concentration levels of the various contaminants (through under or oversupply of air).

In Lusatia, lignite mining causes major disturbances on the landscape scale. Reclamation procedures are applied to recover the reconstructed landscape for different land use options. In this study we investigate soil physical properties of an agricultural reclamation/recultivation site directly after site restoration and the development of selected parameters within the first years after site restoration depending on varying recultivation strategies.The sandy substrates used for recultivation stem from depths of several meters. They are unstructured, free of recent organic matter and have high contents of calcium carbonate. During reconstruction and most of all during surface levelling with heavy crawlers, the substrate?undergoes high mechanical stresses. This leads to partly severe soil or substrate compaction, depending amongst others on substrate water content and mechanical stresses during site construction. We investigate the effect of different organic soil amendments, different crop rotations and partly subsoiling on the development of soil structure. We compare results of laboratory measurements directly after site construction before any reclamation measures had been applied to results we gained after three and four years of recultivation. The results show that after the earthworks are completed, the site is strongly heterogeneous in relation to mechanical stability, permeability for air and water, pore volume and bulk density. The results after three and four years show that the heterogeneity of soil physical parameters decreases. The selection of suitable crop rotations superimposes the affects of other reclamation measures, eg varying organic fertilisers or deep loosening.CITATION:Krnmmelbein, J and Raab, T, 2012. In the case when the number of independent variables is greater, a careful design for carrying out tests has to be made in order to obtain, with the smallest possible number of tests, as much as possible neutral information about the influence of independent variables on the dependent ones. Only on the basis of such design and its statistical analysis it is possible to come to right conclusions about the function of the whole system. The influence of pressure, temperature, humidity and granulation of the coal upon the resistance to pressure and the water absorption of the briquettes has been tested, with the aim to examine how each of the two dependent variables changes depending on the values assumed by any of the four independent variables and which of the mentioned independent variables significantly influences the dependent ones. The full factorial design with 16 experiments and the central composite design with 27 experiments have been applied. The influence of the independent variables upon the dependent ones has been examined by applying the analysis of variance. The influence values of individual factors and their interaction upon the dependent variables have been stated as well as coefficients of curvilinear equation.
