The Copper Canyon deposits, occur in proximity to the regionally distinctive formational boundary between the Staveley Formation and Marimo Shale. The mineralisation here is associated with breccias, veins, and alteration zones near the base of the Marimo Shale unit and in the underlying evaporitic dolomite-dololutite dominant Staveley Formation. The Marimo Shale unit, in its basal 60 metres, is highly carbonaceous and hosts ubiquitous but minor diagenetic (?) copper-pyrite, and on occasion, extensive albite-microcline alteration centres, pyritic (cobaltiferous)-quartz veins, and microcline-quartz_+plagioclase veins or veinlet arrays. The most significant mineralisation, such as at the Greenrnount prospect, consists of a shallowly dipping package of alteration zones overprinted by multiple generations of pink-orange microcline-quartz-chalcopyrite-pyrite-(arsenopyrite) and albite-calcite- phlogopite veins. Accessory mineralogies in most of these mineralisation styles consist of tourmaline, monazite, rutile, and apatite. Chalcopyrite (and secondary chalcocite) and gold are associated with each generation of alteration but are best developed in the later stages of veining. In the underlying Staveley Formation, which is a conformable transition between the Corella Formation limestones and the Marimo Shale, chalcopyrite (cobaltiferous)-pyrite mineralisation occurs as disseminations in pre- and syntectonic breccias, and with disaggregated silica pseudomorphs (after thinly bedded evaporitic sulphate beds) and associated dolomitised limestone-calcilutite. Although this mineralisation may be partly diagenetic in origin the 200 in thick evaporitic packages are also host to a locally widespread (2 to 4 km long and 200 to >500 metres wide) and pervasive 'redrock' styled microcline-dolomite¦hematite alteration. Within this gross alteration package there also seems to be a consistent association with narrow (10 to 100 metres wide), linear (stratabound) semi-massive magnetite-hematite-microcline and quartz-chalcedony replacement zones. Like much of the nearby Corella Formation the Staveley Formation, under the Marimo Shale, has undergone dissolution, paleo-solution karsting (breccias) and tectonic brecciation such that the precursor lithological details have been progressively obliterated. The post-diagenetic to post-tectonic fluid pathway development and metasomatic alteration history of this important lithostructural package of rocks has been traced from preliminary studies only. The ability to do so is largely due to the absence of significant regional and contact metamorphic overprinting, and the local preservation of precursor sediment profiles. It is proposed that both the base of the Marimo Shale and parts of the underlying evaporitic-limestone-dololutite have acted as conformable fluid pathways for hydrothermal and (perhaps) diagenetically derived, Cu-Au-(¦Co ¦As) K-Na-Ti-REE bearing, fluids and brines.

Before proceeding I wish to say that the excellent diagrams by which my paper is illustrated are the work of Mr. C. H. Barnes, Constructing Engineer of the Kalgurli Gold Mines Limited, and I am also much indebted to Mr. F. A. Moss, manager of the mine and for the privilege piIling information not previously made public.The limited time at my disposal has coolled to, curtail the scope of my paper to a few practices in ore treatment which are being worked on the Kalgurli Mine, but which I believe are of more than ordinary interest to thp~e Goncerned in modern treatment of gold ores. As an introduction to my subject it is, necessary that I should give a brief outline of the process by whiGh the gold is won from the complex sulpho-telluride ore of the Kalguili mine.My business is not to enter into any discussion as to the relative merits of the two rival sulpho-telluride ore treatment processes at work on the Kalgoorlie field, viz, the treatment of the unroasted ore after shining by solutions of bromocyanide, as against the treatment of the ore-after roasting by solutions of potassium or sodium cyanide either in filter presses or percolating sand vats. Even if reliable costs and percentages of extractions were obtainable in each case, it would not constitute an infallible basis of comparison, as the larger plants would necessarily have an advantage in cost per ton as against the small plants, and the other conditions obtaining are in many Cases dissimilar.

Jointed rock mass is often encountered in rock engineering and its stability has always been a major concern in underground engineering. To analyze the stress characteristics and their variations in jointed rocks, in this study, a new concept of sub-instability stage before rock failure is defined, and a new experimental method is used to investigate interaction between defects and intact rock of the jointed rock mass during the subinstability stage., Firstly, external characteristics of stress and failure mode of the whole jointed rock are investigated systematically by conducting uniaxial compression tests on red sandstone samples with a set of preexisting open flaws of different sizes, and the interactive damage of intact parts and defects in the subinstability stage was further studied. Secondly, rock-like material samples made of bonded plaster blocks were tested and internal data from stress sensor between the strong and weak segments were collected. The transforming processes from independent activity of the individual segment to overall interactive movement of jointed rock before the unstable failure were analysed. The test results indicated that the subinstability stage marked the beginning of interactive failure between the intact rock and defects. In the early subinstability stage, the relatively intact parts bore most of the load in a jointed rock mass, and the defects were damaged firstly which caused high strain around it. The areas of high strain increase rapidly, extending and migrating, causing damage to the intact parts. In the later sub-instability stage, the interaction effect reached its maximum, and a large number of cracks appeared in the intact rock and they propagated and coalesced. Intact parts experienced rapid failure and then the jointed rock failed. The experimental method used in this paper to identify the sub-instability stage could be used to identify failure precursors of jointed rock masses and to develop technology for disaster prevention in rock engineering. Traditional mechanised resin rock bolting in hard rock underground mines requires the installation of resin capsules into a pre-drilled hole prior to the rock bolt being spun into a hole to mix the resin and set the bolt in place. In poor rockmass conditions, especially at depth or in highly altered faults and shears, the condition of the holes often deteriorates as the poor ground around it unravels and falls into the hole. This results in partially or fully blocked holes that either damages the resin capsule when they are being inserted into the holes or prevent it entirely until the hole is continuously cleaned of debris. This deterioration of the hole condition, and continuous need to clean and re-drill holes, also increases the diameter of the hole which in turn affects the continuously mechanically coupled anchorage mechanism of the rock bolt to the rockmass as there is simply not enough resin in the hole to fill the annulus between the bolt and the rock. This results in a large increase to critical heading cycle time and, more importantly, results in the rock reinforcement not performing as per design specification and increases the risk of instability. To overcome the quality control issues with resin bolt installation in poor ground, a single pass drill, install, inject and tension self-drilling resin bolt application was designed and implemented for use in such conditions. This system allows the operator to inject a two part polyester resin through a self-drilled hollow bolt to mix and fully encapsulate the rock reinforcement. The self-drilling bolt allows for post injection of the hole after the bolt has been installed into the rock and gives the operator manual or automated control on the amount of resin used in the hole to ensure complete encapsulation and continuously mechanically coupled anchorage to the rock. This allows the reinforcement to work as designed and provide the Geotechnical Engineer extra quality control confidence in these conditions. The implementation of this single pass resin bolting system resulted in significant decreases to the resin bolting cycle time and rock bolt quality control failures. In this paper the design, implementation and embedment into the development cycle will be discussed and the in situ quality control checks used to validate the increase in rock bolt installation quality will be shared. There are two mechanisms in the flo- tation process by which particles are transported from the pulp to the con- centrate: bubble-mineral aggregation and entrainment. It is the chemical processes which occur in the pulp which are critical to the success of flotation since they control the floatability of different min- erals and the selectivity which can be obtained. However, these chemical pro- cesses are so complex that metallurgists are still limited in their ability to predict the floatability of particles in industrial circuits by consideration of the minerals present and the chemical environment. The alternative approach to understand- ing flotation is to examine the behaviour of minerals in industrial flotation pro- cesses, to recognise similarities and differences, and to define the "laws" which appear to apply. Using this ap- proach it has been found that minerals float at a rate which is proportional to their concentration in the pulp, and that the rate of flotation of different min- erals is influenced by variables which' affect the pulp or the froth phase. The ultimate application of this approach is the use of models for circuit simulation purposes. It is this alternative approach which is the theme of this paper. One of the most important problems in understanding the technology of flotation has been in defining the characteristics of the particles being floated. Particles entering flotation vary widely in size and mineral composition, and different par- ticle types float at different rates. These rates do not change uniformly as operating variables change. The Kencana underground gold mine comprises two world-class epithermal vein deposits located in the North Maluku province of Indonesia on Halmahera Island. The K1 deposit has a recent extensive mining history, whilst development of the K2 deposit is in progress. Kencana epithermal vein zones have a relatively simple planar geometry dipping 25 to 45¦ towards the East and extend 400 to 600 m along strike and down dip. True width ranges from 1 m to 20 m. Economic gold grades are generally associated with two distinct mineralisation styles: Main Zone û continuous material characterised by classic epithermal vein textures including crustiform/colloform chalky white quartz- adularia sulfide banded and brecciated veining typically grading 10 to 40 g/t Au. Bonanza Zone û semi-continuous identifiable zones within the Main Zone. Characterised by brecciated quartz-adularia sulfide banded vein æginguroÆ material typically grading 80 to 200 g/t Au. Associated with this æBonanzaÆ zone are gold grades averaging around ten times higher than the surrounding Main Zone. At the resource evaluation stage, these deposits are typically drilled on approximately 25 m by 25 m spacing. This drilling density is usually adequate to allow robust estimation of global resources, including the lateral definition of æBonanzaÆ style mineralisation. It appears intuitive at the resource definition stage to separately model the æBonanza ZoneÆ using deterministic methods such as manual interpretation and wireframing. Inevitably, however, such deterministic methods result in a simplified version of reality. Whilst the geologistÆs interpretation of the overall vein volume and lateral extent of æBonanzaÆ mineralisation has proven to be remarkably accurate, close-spaced sampling and mapping of the K1 orebody has shown that this style of mineralisation exhibits extreme short-scale geometric and spatial variability. A consequence of this short-scale geometric and grade variability is the significant uncertainty with reporting these Resources and Reserves at relatively small reporting time periods such as monthly production periods. The mining method employed at Kencana often involves extracting the full width of the mineralised vein with multiple mining passes over several months. In the past it has proven difficult to achieve accurate production budgets and forecasts at Kencana as any given mining schedule based on the resource model is acutely sensitive to the quantity and location of æBonanzaÆ material. Moreover, the degree of uncertainty or risk associated with a mining schedule significantly increases as the reporting time period becomes smaller. A further deficiency of deterministic methods for geometric modelling is the inherent lack of ability to derive confidence intervals for quantifying uncertainty and risk. The use of conditional simulation techniques can help overcome this deficiency. Geostatistical conditional simulation techniques have been applied at Kencana in an attempt to model and quantify geological and grade variability in the upcoming K2 orebody based on the experience to date with mining the K1 orebody. At Kencana, conditional simulation has provided a successful means to quantify uncertainties and risks associated with various data densities and reporting time periods. The results of this project have provided managers and planners with a clearer understanding of the likely variances and risks associated with predicting gold metal production at key reporting time periods based on data at the resource model level of resolution. With corporate requirements to adhere to mining budgets/quarterly schedules, this type of analysis allows a more scientific approach to estimating grade uncertainty in the mining schedule. Until now this has been difficult to quantify due to the extreme gold metal variability. The availability of this type of analysis allows a time-efficient rationalisation on redesigns of the mining shapes and effective communication of the likely uncertainties involved.

Investigations of the Mineragraphic Section; Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, have included most of the known stannite-bearing ores in Australia, and have revealed several new occurrences of this relatively uncommon mineral. They provide information about its paragenesis, and its possible effect on tin recovery, that may be of general interest.Several of the investigations used in the preparation of this paper, were made in the first instance by pr. F. L. Stillwell or in collaboration with him.CASSITERITE-SULPHIDE ORES IN NORTH-WEST- TASMANIA Stannite is a minor component of most of the cassiterite sulphide ores of north-western Tasmania. These include the orebodies of Mount Bischoff, the Cleveland mine, Moina, the Stanley River district, Renison Bell, and the Heemskirk-Zeehan district, and form a well defined metallogenetic provence which is related to the Devonian granites of this part of Tasmania.In these ores mineralisation began. with deposition of cassiterite, a little wolfram, and quartz, topaz and tourmaline. With falling temperature, deposition of cassiterite ceased and arsenopy-rite, pyrite, and especially pyrrhotite, formed in abundance, tending to give massive sulphide ore. A little chalcopyrite; stannite, sphalerite and native bismuth accompanied the pyrrhotite. Deposition of quartz ceased after the pyrrhotite, was formed, and the later-formed nonsulphide gangue consists chiefly of carbonates and fluorite. With, the advent of the carbonates the pyrrhotite was altered to fine-gained intergrowths of marcasite and pyrite. Excess iron from the pyrrhotite entered the intergrown carbonate, or was precipitated as magnetite. Some solution of the cassiterite occurred at this stage, the tin being redeposited chiefly as stimnite replacement rims around the residual cassitellrite grains. The applicability of environmental geotechnics for erosion management is increasing in importance worldwide. The environmental impact of mining and evolving environmental legislation has been receiving increased attention worldwide in the last two decades (Bradfield, Shultz and Stone, 1996). The potential impacts associated with unstable spoil dumps from mine operations is the focus of concern both by the mining industry, environmental legislative agencies and members of the public. This is because of the need to increase the reliability of erosion prediction and in the minimisation of costs for spoil dump design. Engineered slopes of mine spoils may be stable at the end of construction, but they can deteriorate over time. Engineering design of mine spoil dumps seeks to reduce the potential for such erosion damage through correct selection of an initial stable landform scheme (Goh, 1997). The design of mine spoil dumps must also conform to the specifications of evolving legislation. The Queensland Environmental Management Overview Strategy (EMOS) states that, for minimised degradation of the surface area due to erosion during the development of a project, the erosion rates should be between 12 - 40 tonnes/hectare/year and that the depths of rills and gullies be limited to less than 30 cm (QDPI, 1988). The aim of engineering design is to ensure the long-term stability of the spoil dumps. The implementation of effective planning and operating procedures through recontouring and grading assists in the reshaping of spoil dumps to a safe, stable and non-erodible environment.

Understanding how ore interacts with flux particles at elevated temperatures to create molten slag is crucial since it governs the dynamics of a chemical reaction. This study explores the smelting behaviour of pre-reduced Nchwaning manganese ore when combined with lime, with the objective of examining the evolving interaction between pre-reduced ore particles and lime over time. The research sheds light on the interaction between solid and liquid and the phases that emerge during this process. To achieve this, a sessile drop furnace was employed to rapidly heat the materials positioned adjacent to each other on an alumina substrate and to observe the smelting process as it unfolded over time. This method allowed for the direct observation of the melting temperatures and the flux-ore reaction progression rate, and the potential disruptive events that might occur. By comparing the molten interfaces of the fluxed materials at various time intervals, this study provides insights into the relative rate of slag formation from the two materials. The results indicate that the main slag formation initiated at approximately 1400°C and continued to advance with time, with complete mixing occurring around 1500°C. The possible phases formed were identified using Scanning Electron Microscopy and modelled using Fact Sage thermodynamic software. In addition, the iron particles in the pre-reduced Mn ore were separated and settled from a rich MnO-containing slag. It was found that the separation of molten iron droplets from the slag depends on the rate of solid MnO particles dissolution into the adjacent slag phase.

The B.R.G.M., through international experience gained over many years, has become very skilled in alluvial prospection, particularly for diamonds. The research laboratories within the B.R.G.M. have also been active in creating new mineral processing equipment,. some of which is directly applicable to such prospection. One such development, the mobile prospection unit, is described and -its application in mineral exploration is demonstrated by a consider- ation of the diamond search in Australia and the general exploration of the Massif Armoricain (France). Because this latter study was fundamental in the development of the concept of "mineral-geochemistry", and its application in mineral exploration, it is also briefly described.

Recycling and decarbonisation current metallurgical processes is key for our planet’s future and in both cases, digital twinning will play an important role. However, the various modelling techniques being used for digital twinning require a lot of input values on variables such as viscosities, diffusion coefficients and surface energies that need to be known as a function of temperature, atmosphere and composition, but which are not widely available, such as in databases, for molten slag phases. The need for more accurate data on physical slag properties is clear and will be extremely relevant for making more realistic and quantitative simulations. Some of these properties are difficult to determine, which is inherent to the very high pyrometallurgical temperatures. Therefore, this work focuses on some aspects related to determining electrical conductivities, viscosities and surface tensions of slags via a combined experimental-modelling method. Besides experimental work, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations can be used to investigate oxidic slag physical properties. With MD simulations, one can follow the time evolution of a system (consisting of atoms or molecules) by integrating Newton’s equation of motion. The input for an MD simulation mainly consists of a force field as well as initial positions, velocities and mass of each atom. The determination of the transport properties in existing literature of MD simulations in oxidic systems, is typically based on incorrect assumptions. For example, to determine the ionic conductivity, the frequently-used Einstein-Stokes equation fails to take into account all ionic types and neglects correlated motion. Furthermore, the viscosity determination via the Einstein-Stokes formula also assumes independent motion of the different ions. This paper gives a brief overview of the opportunities and challenges related to the use of MD simulations for oxidic slag systems.

The basic rule for correct design of a sample plant is that all parts of the material being sampled must have an equal probability of being collected and becoming part of the final sample for analysis. However, this rule is often ignored in the design of sample plants to save capital costs. This is false economy, because the samples taken are likely to be seriously biased and the precision may be compromised. The introduction of bias is particularly serious, because no amount of replicate sampling and analysis will reduce bias once it is present and it is often quite difficult and expensive to subsequently rectify the problem due to space limitations around the primary sampling location. This is also true of secondary and tertiary sampling stages, particularly in terms of the relationship between particle size and retained sample mass. The best strategy is to seek expert sampling advice and design the sample plant correctly at the outset.

Analysis of different environmental scenarios and to represent, spatially, of impacted areas is possible by the use of geoprocessing techniques, specifically Systems of Geographical Information (SIG). Through these systems it is possible to create dynamic mathematical models, constituting of a georeferenced digital database and employing the integrated data originated from several sources. In this context, the general goal of this paper is to apply this tool in an environmental analysis of a specific karstic area impacted by mining activities. In order to preserve a limestone site, internationally recognised by its archaeological features, including caverns, lakes and evidences of prehistoric ages, the Brazilian government has created the Lagoa Santa Environment Protection Area. This place is located in the proximity of the Belo Horizonte international airport. In the past two decades exploitations of dimension stones have increased in this area. These exploitations have been done without a mine plan promoting several environmental impacts. The objective of this paper is to analyse these activities using SIG as a basic tool to locate the main mining related impacts and propose mitigation measures including waste and tailings disposal and reshaping of the landscape and introducing a drainage system for the considered zone.

Due to operational and regulatory practicalities, pit lakes will continue to be legacies of many open cut mining lease relinquishments. Unplanned or inappropriate management of these significant geographical features may lead to a short-term liability to all stakeholders during mining operations, or to ongoing liability to the local community and environment following lease relinquishment. However, the potential for pit lakes to provide benefit to companies, communities and the environment is frequently unrecognised and yet may be a vital contribution to the sustainability of the open cut mining industry. Improved remediation technologies are offering more avenues for pit lake end use than ever before, at the same time mining companies, local communities and regulatory authorities are also becoming more aware of the benefit these water resources have to offer. Sustainable pit lake management aims to better minimise short- and long-term pit lake liabilities, and yet also to maximise short- and long-term pit lake opportunities as well.

Geoffrey Blainey's historical account of the mining activity on the west coast of Tasmania, æThe Peaks of LyellÆ documents the changes over 130 years of activity in the region. Commissioned by the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company, emphasis is placed upon the development of the Mount Lyell Mine in Queenstown. Chapter 19 æWidening HorizonsÆ details the review the Mount Lyell Company undertook in 1904/05 to ensure the future of the operation, following the pessimistic outlook regarding diminishing reserves and poor grade ore. The analogies documented between the Mount Lyell Company at that time, and Gold Mines of Australia 90 years on are remarkable, with both companies demonstrating a commitment to the Mount Lyell area through active exploration, the proactive search for alternative technology and the recognition of the valuable human resource. As Blainey writes (Blainey, 1993), æwith its expanding chemical works, its huge Tasmanian mines, its railways and smelter, its coke works and its mine crusade, Mount Lyell was probably one of the nation's five great industrial companies in 1906 or 1907. This brief phase of industrial and mining expansion had its seed in the threat of extinction . . .Æ After a number of reprieves, the Mount Lyell mine did stop production in 1994, but that only provided an impetus for a review and rebirth.

This paper reviews the floor heave mechanisms in underground coal mine roadways. Previous studies have reported three main failure mechanisms: bearing capacity failure, buckling and swelling. The buckling failure has been observed where immediate floor strata are relatively strong and thinly bedded. On the contrary, the weak floor strata have been associated with both the bearing capacity failure and swelling mechanisms. The bearing capacity floor failures are likely to induce other types of instability such as pillar punching, tensile failure of pillar, roof fall and subsidence as well as floor heave. Despite a considerable amount of research, predicting the magnitude, location and timing of floor deformation is challenging with current state of knowledge. Pounamu is a MSori collective term for semi-precious stone scientifically referred to as nephrite, semi-nephrite, jade or bowenite (tangiwai) that is composed predominantly of metamorphic tremolite in a felted, fibrous texture. It is Aotearoa/New ZealandÆs icon mineral material. Ownership and management of this important taonga (treasure) has been vested in Te Rnnanga o NgSi Tahu as part of a Treaty of Waitangi settlement process. Increasing demand from the tourist, jewellery, fashion and sculpture industries, as well as cultural renaissance, has placed pressure on the pounamu resource. This had led to nephrite importation, allegations that foreign material is being marketed falsely as New Zealand pounamu, and wider concerns over the potential for exploitation/over-use and theft of genuine pounamu.   Research is underway to characterise different pounamu source regions by defining their ægenetic fingerprintÆ. The geological age and radiogenic isotopic composition of Aotearoa/New Zealand pounamu is distinguished from other nephrite jade occurrences overseas, due to relatively young cooling ages. Strontium isotope ratios distinguish pounamu from different source areas within Aotearoa/New Zealand (whakapapa), with signatures reflecting the host terrane rocks (their family) and their position in a sequence of metamorphic events (their generation). The research will provide a tool for archaeological research, trademark and resource protection.   Mineral resource assessments normally aim to define the total volume/tonnage present, which is generally assumed to be finite, applying drilling and geostatistical modelling. Pounamu resource assessment requires a different approach, as its intrinsic value is insufficient to warrant modern exploration methods (eg drilling, geophysics). Pounamu is only known to occur at a restricted few in-situ (hard-rock) localities. It is primarily found in transported (alluvial) detrital river and glacial outwash deposits, where collectable material has short term variability due to erosion and transport processes. A new methodology is being developed aiming to define: +        the total resource present, +        the relative rate of change in the availability of that resource through erosion and other geological processes, +        active areas where new material is likely to be exposed (eg by erosion), and +        appropriate extraction rates for sustainable use. The methodology will provide a holistic overview of the resource in different regions of Aotearoa/New Zealand, and may be applicable to other transient or restricted natural resources that occur within geologically active environments (eg supplies of driftwood on beaches).

When Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) purchased its fleet of 18 CaterpillarÆs dump trucks in 1999, as part of its change to owner operated mining, five CaterpillarÆs Computer Aided Earthmoving Systems (CAES) were also commissioned on Komatsu PC8000 hydraulic shovels and Caterpillar D10R bulldozers. Since then the CAES system has been installed and operational on Komatsu PC3000 hydraulic shovel, CaterpillarÆs D10R dozers and Cat 994 front-end loader while Cat 854 wheel dozer has been fitted with CAESbasic. This investment in advanced machine guidance and control technology has proven very beneficial over the years for the Super Pit with improved safety and increased operating efficiency and productivity. The paper brings into focus how the CAES system adaptation in unique mining conditions assists in production gain, equipment operatorÆs safety, flexibility and independence, personnel removal from hazardous areas, acquisition of operational information and improvements in mine planning and design, benefiting the entire mining operation.

This paper examines the longer-term predictive capacity of the GAMSPATH computer program (developed by the Alberta Research Council) for a waste rock (sample MS) obtained from the Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) mine, Kalimantan that contained significant framboidal pyrite. The model was refined by comparison with the net acid generation (NAG) and column leach tests to provide a basis for calibration of the model for both short term and longer-term reaction trends. The oxidation of pyrite during the kinetic NAG test using H2O2 provides oxygen directly at the mineral surface, generating a measured oxidation rate for pyrite of 1.16 + 10-6 mol m-2 s-1, whereas the oxygen diffusion limited rate in the leach column air equilibrated reaction was of the order 10-8 mol m-2 s-1 as calculated from the GAMSPATH thermodynamic database. Results indicated that the oxygen derived from hydrogen peroxide had to be included as a reactant (eg a reacting mineral) in the simulation to account for the direct availability of oxygen at the sulfide mineral surfaces. Optical investigations identified the proportion, particle size, and surface area, of framboidal and euhedral pyrite in sample MS. The reactive surface areas of the two morphologies were very different (eg ratio: 5:1). To manage these two different pyrite morphologies the GAMSPATH thermodynamic database was updated to include framboidal pyrite, with similar thermodynamic properties and oxidation rate to euhedral pyrite but with a particle size based on the size of the individual internal framboid microcrysts. This modification, with framboidal pyrite reaction based on the size of its microcrysts produced results that correlated well with the kinetic NAG and column leach test results when the measured (kinetic NAG test rate) and calculated (column test rate) pyrite oxidation rates were employed. This provided some confidence that the model could be extrapolated to indicate longer-term geochemical reaction trends.

Sasol Roche Blasting Services (SRBS) has undertaken a process of trialing and evaluating the use of the SMI electronic initiating system with the specific purpose of being able to fully quantify the benefits of the system over a pyrotechnic system. After an initial trial of three shots in mid-2001, it was decided that to fully quantify the system, a complete strip would need to be fired using the system so that any losses due to ramps or end walls would be the same for both scenarios. The results have shown a significant improvement over the use of pyrotechnic initiators in several key areas including percentage cast. Through the use of survey results, the increase in cast and subsequent net improvement in blasting has been quantified. These trials have set out to compare each system in comparable situations to determine the real benefits, if any, of the electronic system over the pyrotechnic one. As the percentage cast is relatively easy to quantify using modern survey techniques, it was decided that this would be the principle method of comparison. However, while the assessment only included survey results, any improvement in fragmentation size and consistency would have flow on effects on reduced running and maintenance costs.
