The Resource Management Act 1991 provides for activities to be classified as permitted, controlled, restricted discretionary, discretionary, non-complying or prohibited in district and regional plans. This paper looks at the use of the prohibited activity status to restrict, in particular, mining. Often the use of prohibited activity status for mining appears to have no basis other than the negative perceptions that the local community and/or the planner drafting the plan has toward mining and quarrying.   The paper will address the current appeal regarding the use of prohibited activity status now before the Court of Appeal, and the history to the litigation. The relevance of the outcome of the appeal to the minerals sector will also be explained.

May I, at the very outset of this second gathering, congratulate the Institute on the great progress that has been made in the interval. At the first meeting in New Zealand in the year 1903, I understand that less than 20 persons were present, and now in the large concourse before me I believe there are not fewer than 140 persons, while if every member of the Institute to-day where here there would be over 500 with usagreat change from a membership of only 250 in 1903. A new strain of Thiobacil/us ferrooxidans (SPK I) has been isolated which has a higher copper to iron release ratio (2.04) than the standard T ferrooxidans (CPBI) (1.12). The diminished iron oxidizing ability enables almost quantitative release of copper (93 per cent) from a chalcopyrite-rich concentrate without interference by iron reprecipitation. In a single batch leach, Bougainville copper concentrate yielded 9.3 grams/litre soluble copper from a 4 per cent w/v suspension in 100 days at 32°C.Solvent extraction recovery of soluble copper is recommended as a final step in a leaching process.

The design of semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill based comminution circuits for the treatment of competent ores, similar to those at Geita and Boddington, involves the same process of sample selection, test work, data analysis and data modelling/interpretation as that used for 'average' competency ores. However, over the past couple of years a number of issues have arisen that are common to the design of circuits for the comminution of 'highly' competent ores. The impact of these issues on project viability is generally more pronounced when treating hard ores than average to soft ores due to the greater impact on capital and operating costs. The issues encountered have included: standard test procedures have been modified; test equipment has worn or been damaged; different procedures yield different data and varying interpretation; and modelling and empirical calculations have been based on poor benchmarks, or used incorrectly in the case of JKSimMet, yielding misleading outcomes. The purpose of this paper is to present, discuss and clarify some of the issues associated with conducting test work and designing comminution circuits for the treatment of 'highly' competent ores in order to reduce thelevel of conflict arising from interpretation and application of test work data. Specifically, the issues associated with the bond crushing (impact) and rod work indices measurement, the various SAG mill specific energy tests, and the interpretation of the resulting data will be discussed in the context of case studies.

I had hoped when the time came for me to address this meeting that gold mining would be in a much happier position than we find it to-day.As it is, and because of the demands of national security, we find this great and valuable primary industry relegated to the background and in danger of temporary extinction.These notes refer mainly to gold mining in Western Australia, whence comes the major portion of Australia's production, and their purpose is to record a brief review of the industry immediately prior to the general disorganization that is following the call-up of men from the mines.During this period of reduced production the loss of comparable statistical data will make it impossible to follow the progress of the industry, and, since the period may be long, it occurred to me that information might be derived from an examination of the trend of recent production that would indicate what may be expected of the industry when full production is resumed in the future.Since the revival of gold mining, which started in 1931, most of the old-established mines have reorganized and, in some cases, completely renewed and enlarged their equipment in order to achieve maximum production, and old mines hitherto unpayable have been re-opened and equipped. At the same time large sums have been spent in scientific prospecting and in search for new mines, and it is safe to say that at the end of 1939, when gold production reached its peak, practically every known mine in Western Australia that could be worked profitably was in production.During this period the number of men employed in the industry rose from 5,961 in 1931 to approximately 15,000 in 1939. From the outbreak of war in 1939 to the end of 1941 the output from the mines was maintained at full pressure, maximum tonnage beingrecorded in 1940, although a reduction in the grade of ore treated caused a slight falling off in gold production.During 1941 there was a. fall in both tonnage and grade. The decline in tonnage was due partly to the closing of the Lancefield and Mount Magnet mines, and partly to the shortage of labour brought about by the response of the goldfields to the call for men for the fighting services, the average number of men in the industry in this year being reduced to 12,929.With the entry of the United States into the war in December last and the pooling of the resources of the allied nations, the need for gold as a purchasing medium passed, and with its passing there arose the demand for the transfer of the man-power engaged in gold mining to other fields of industry directly connected with the war effort.There was a ready response by those connected with the industry who...

Although these subterranean cavities are common to the Broken Hill big lode, yet the Broken Hill Proprietary is the most prolific in their occurrence, loud they have been found of various dimensions almost from the surface down to the lowest levels yet attained in that mine. Many of these vugbs have contined valuable silver, copper and lead deposits, and some have been remarkable for the beautiful forms of crystallization pendant from the roofs and walls, and collected on the floors. The question arises, How are these caverns and fissures in the ore body formed? There are numerous theories more or less feasible, but that the causes are variant is demonstrated beyond doubt. That water in its passage leaving channels, is one ofthe chief factors for their production is assured, and their presence is likewise due to the shrinkage and dropping of the earth from varions causes, to the deposition of material forming ledges overhanging, and thus leaving spaces below, and also to chemical erosion and electrical action both of which latter are constantly at work in reconstructing, segregating and dissolving tlie mineral and metallic constituents of all ore bodies.One of the most remarkable vughs yet discovered in the big mine was that opened up about three months bitek in the' heart of the ironstone body on Block 11, and located about 40 feet below the 100 feet level of Weatherley's stopes, but now destroyed in the progress of work. Probably it was caused by chemical action, the eating out, so to speak, of a soft and soluble portion of the manganic iron, leaving a,hollow about 15 feet long, with a width and height, of say, 6 feet, carpeted with beautiful zinc with a modicum of limeincrustations, apparently produced by the percolation from around the carbonate waters holding these minerals in solution. This cavern was divided into, what might be termed, a double chamber, by big boulders of manganic iron, also coated with an aggregation of small crystals of zinc and lime although the actual proportion of the latter was not determined.

The work described herein is the opening phase of an extensive system of underground excavation undertaken under contract with a Malayan authority.The specifications called for the lining of all tunnels in earth or broken rock with circular segmented cast iron lining, similar to that of the London tubes, and it is the installation of these linings which it is proposed to discuss.Owing to the long deferred delivery quoted and the obvious need for speed of access to the internal installation, it was decided to defer driving the completed circular section and substitute two small timbered headings.These could later be opened out in turn to full section and lined without prejudice to traffic, since both of them had access to the internal workings.NATURE OF ROCKThe rock series through which the circular sections were driven consisted of:(a) A wide zone of intrusive porphyritic granite, consisting generally of orthoclase phenocrysts in a ground mass of micro pegmatite. This area showed advanced weathering, varying from a stage showing slightly tinted kaolin containing approximately 20% of small boulders to one of ultimate decomposition to pure kaolin;(b) A narrow zone of weathered augite diorite, consisting of rock masses of a maximum weight of some 100-150 tons, isolated by clay seams up to 1 ft. 6 in. in width.The whole area was in a state of quasi-hydrostatic equilibrium, which resulted in heavy pressure immediately after excavation. Freshly broken faces would appear to be quite solid but, within a few minutes, would commence to sweat and "slab off" under pressure and, unless support was placed promptly, the whole face would burst out and run from above. Mucking was slow, owing to the plastic nature of the clay and the ease with which it puddled into slurry.In zone (b) a good deal of trouble was experienced because of the fact that the somewhat heavy blasting necessary tended to cause movement of the large rock masses. Subsequent scouring out of the supporting clay bands by the waterflow permitted settlement of the ground on to the timbers and many reinforcing sets were therefore required.The timbering of the pilot headings and its relation to the cross-section of the circular tunnels is shown in Fig. 1. The Kevitsa Ni-Cu-PGE deposit in northern Finland contains disseminated Ni-Cu-Fe sulfides, and platinum-group minerals (PGM). The 2.05 Ga-old ultramafic-mafic, funnel-shaped intrusion is intruded into a volcanosedimentary sequence. The major ore minerals are pentlandite, hexagonal pyrrhotite and troilite, chalcopyrite, cubanite and magnetite. Pyrrhotite and pentlandite are replaced by pyrite, millerite and heazelwoodite near the surface. Nickeline, maucherite and gersdorffite are locally abundant. A pilot feed sample of 575 t of the main orebody at Kevitsa had average grades 0.45 per cent Cu, 0.36 per cent Ni, 1.85 per cent S, 0.33 g/t Pt, 0.34 g/t Pd and 0.19 g/t Au, with 0.06 per cent Ni contained in silicates. Higher PGE contents (2 - 27 ppm) occur in a vertical N-S bearing fault zone. The PGM (n = 6022) mapped in specimens of four drill holes, consist of sperrylite 34.7 vol per cent, braggite and cooperite 18.5 vol per cent, geversite 17.2 vol per cent, moncheite 14.7 vol per cent, merenskyite 6.7 vol per cent, stibiopalladinite 4.3 vol per cent, sobolevskite 1.9 vol per cent, kotulskite 0.7 vol per cent, michenerite 0.6 vol per cent, keithconnite 0.3 vol per cent, rustenburgite 0.1 vol per cent, melonite, froodite, laurite together 0.1 vol per cent and only a few grains of sudburyite, irarsite, vysotskite, erlichmanite, hongishiite, Pt-Cu-alloys, three undefined Pd and Pt bismuthinides and antimonides and a Pd-Cu-bearing Pt-Ni-Fe sulfide. Most of the PGM, 62 per cent, are enclosed in silicates, 29 per cent are intergrown with sulfides, nine per cent are within sulfides. A portion of the PGE occurs in solid solution in sulfides and arsenides. Ni flotation yielded smelter-grade concentrates averaging 12.2 per cent nickel. The average sulfide Ni recovery is 78.8 per cent and total Ni recovery is 65.3 per cent. The average Pt is 10 g/t at 55 per cent recovery, Pd 7.7 g/t at 38 per cent recovery and Au 1.6 g/t at ten per cent recovery. Cu concentrates averaged 28.6 per cent Cu with an average recovery of 78 per cent and further 11 per cent in the nickel concentrate. The copper concentrate contains 4 g/t Au at 24 per cent recovery. The average Fe to MgO ratio 17.9 is well above the targeted minimum of 4.5. The pilot results show that the previously used TETA (triethylene tetramine) can be avoided and good quality, smelter-grade concentrates can be produced from the Kevitsa ore at economical levels of recovery by conventional flotation methods.

FOR rapidly marking in geological and topographical features on parish plans, the author has used the Veeder cyclometer with very satisfactory results. A simple Veeder cyclometer, usually retailed at cycle depots at 4s., is fixed to the axle of the front wheel of an ordinary bicycle. The cyclometer is desigued to read in miles and tenths of miles, which are recorded through gearing actuated by a striker on a spoke of the bicycle wheel engaging one of the vanes of the cyclometer once every revolution.By using 80 strikers the reading would be in chains and tenths of chains; therefore the use of 8 strikers gives the reading in chains, utilizing all the figures. The cyclometer is designed to be placed on the right-hand side of the bicycle, and takes up a minimum of space, being only about the size of the top joint of the thumb. With some makes of cycles there is insufficient clearance, so the cyclometer must then be placed on the left side, and the 8 strikers made to engage the top vanes, as shown in the sketch (Fig. 1).Very accurate readings can be obtained by this instrument. In the latter half of 1973 a contract was given to Roberts-Holland Joint Venture for the stripping of the southern exhaust airway.The contract was carried out efficiently and relatively cheaply. It was completed 2 months ahead of schedule.The sinking stage and in particular the drilling jumbo proved to be a success and helped produce an above schedule stripping rate.No major problems were encountered with ground conditions or ventilation. A survey of the shaft showed the diameter to be within the set limits of 5·49 m ± 0·15 m.

The Managalase area is remote and little visited by geologists or prospectors. Yet it holds the key to the tectonics and petrology of this part of Papua. The eastern Managalase plateau (M, Figure 1) lies between the Hydrographers andesite volcano (H) and Sesara shoshonite volcano (S) to the south of Popondetta on the Papua Peninsular. It contains over 30 small volcanic centres in an area of only 400 km2 . To the south and west lies the basic-utrabasic belt (B-UB) of the Morobe arc. This is the leading edge of oceanic plate obducted over the Owen Stanley Metamorphics during the lower Eocene time. To the east and southeast lies the Cape Vogel geosyncline where the western end of the Woodlark basin spreading centre enters mainland Papua. The extension of the spreading centre as a suture might pass as far as the southern margin of the Musa Coastal plain. A new pattern of plate tectonic motions has been determined by the global positioning system and the southern margin of the Woodlark plate has been redefined (Tregoning et al, 1998; Taylor, Goodliffe and Martinez, et al, 1999). The Managalase plateau is margined by two inferred faults. These outline a cusp protruding from the main basic-ultrabasic belt where these rocks are near the surface. The westerly arm of the cusp passes through the centres of the Hydrographers and Mount Lamington andesitic volcanoes. Mount Lamington overlies Quaternary alluvium and underlying Tertiary sediments (Arculus et al, 1983) but members of the basic-ultrabasic belt crop out on the southern flanks. The easterly arm of the cusp is an inferred shear zone (and ? fault) connecting up with the terminus of the suture on the Musa coastal plain. Movements on the two faults forming the cusp are thought to have produced the conjugate N-S, E-W faults on the plateau (Ruxton, 1966). To the east, and isolated, are the two large andesitic stratovolcanoes of Mounts Victory (V) and Trafalgar (T) which together form Cape Nelson. Mount Victory was last active in the 1890s. The Waiowa shoshonitic volcano explosion centres (W), last active in 1943 - 1944, lie near the suture adjacent to the actively rising Goropu mountains. Extension in these mountains is clearly demonstrated by the soil profiles being skeletal along a bounding fault and ageing uphill. The incision of small parallel ravines also dig deeper further upslope from the fault. To the south-east of Mount Suckling (K) the Dayman Dome is also an expanding mass. The Owen Stanley fault is parallel, and located to the south of the suture. The Mesozoic metamorphics form the backbone of the Papuan Peninsula. The intramontane Musa Trough is thought to date from the mid-Tertiary. At the eastern end of the trough Pleistocene and Recent ultrabasic breccias and alkali basalt crop out (Green, 1961).

Production mine geology must be accurate and efficient in order to reduce risk and ensure that ore value and mining operation revenue are maximised. Present grade control practices are commonly based on outmoded and inaccurate 2D geological mapping techniques where spatial relationships are estimated by eye, sketched by hand and projected to arbitrary reference planes. The 3D mapping approach outlined in this paper integrates 3D photogrammetric imagery with implicit modelling techniques to enable more accurate grade control and reconciliation in underground mines. High-resolution stereo photographs are taken of daily ore development headings. Ore contacts are traced directly on a 2D face photo using a stylus and rugged tablet. Area-weighted face grades are estimated and calculated on mapped 2D face planes. In the office, a 3D photorealistic mesh is processed and georeferenced. 2D face mapping data is transformed into its actual 3D location and true 3D mine mapping is performed by digitising oriented 3D polylines representing ore contacts and other geological features directly onto the image surface. Three-dimensional spatial relationships are fixed, eliminating the projection error of traditional 2D methods. Ore envelope and waste solids are modelled within the closed, drift-round mesh. Volume-weighted ore envelope and round grades, as well as round volume and tonnage, are calculated. Ore/waste classifications, grade, tonnage and per cent dilution are quantified per round, visually assessed in 3D and reconciled with short- and long-term models on a daily basis. Updated geological continuity models provide geological guidance in development headings under geological control and accurate 3D structural and form-line mapping improves definition drilling and stope planning. Three-dimensional imagery provides a permanent detailed survey and geological record of mine workings that can be revisited virtually to reinterpret geological ore controls in light of new observations and insights. In addition images can be used to monitor daily production performance, create training scenarios for miners, engineers and geologists and prepare management presentations. This approach adds value to underground mines by improving the accuracy and efficiency of mine geology practices. Separation of Iron Particles from Banded Haematite Quartzite (BHQ) Ore by Selective Magnetic Coating The separation of fine iron particles from banded hematite quartzite (BHQ) has been studied using selective magnetic coating. The BHQ ore assays as 38.9 per cent Fe, 42.5 per cent SiO2 and 1.0 per cent Al2O3. Mineralogically, the ore contains hematite and quartz as the major mineral phases where as goethite and magnetite is present in minor entities. Natural magnetite of very fine size and oleate-magnetite in colloidal form, prepared synthetically in the laboratory are used as the coating material on the surface of hematite particles. The selective coatings of oleate-magnetite on BHQ surfaces followed by magnetic separation studies have indicated that, it is possible to achieve 62.3 per cent Fe with 8.5 per cent SiO2 at 85.4 per cent iron recovery. The recovery of iron values is found to be superior in comparison to the conventional magnetic separation techniques. The selectivity of coating for enhancing the magnetic response of iron particles is achieved by controlling the surface properties of the particle via electrokinetic potential adjustment by controling pH and addition of oleate-magnetite. In the separation process, the effects of pH, magnetic intensity and addition of oleate-magnetite are studied to achieve the maximum grade and recovery of iron values. The optimum separation is observed at pH of 7.5, oleate-magnetite concentration of 0.25 ml/g of BHQ ore and a magnetic intensity of around 0.8 Tesla. The X-ray diffraction (XRD), Infra-red spectroscopy (IR) and UV-visible spectroscopic studies strongly suggest preferential coating of magnetite on hematite surfaces. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies have brought out the semi-quantitative features of BHQ ore. The recovery of iron values from a lean grade ore such as BHQ is carried out looking into the future needs of this ore in India for iron and steel making.

Increasing demand for copper, lead and zinc with continuous depletion of good grade ore reserves, warrants the need for utilization of lean and complex ores of these metals. There is worldwide effort to develop suitable processes for these purposes. The present paper deals with the chloride leaching of complex base metal sulphide concentrates of two Indian deposits. A two stage leaching process is suggested keeping selectivity of metal dissolution in view.In the first stage most of the lead and zinc are reacted with dilute FeCI3 (0.3M) solutions at a temperature ono°c where major portion of the lead remains in the residue and zinc reports in solution. After taking out lead chloride by brine leaching, the residue has been treated for copper dissolution. A concentrated FeCI3 leaching at boiling temperature as well as ambient aqueous chlorine leaching have been separately tried to dissolve out the copper from the residue. Based on the results obtained, a flowsheet for the proposed process is presented.

The extent of regional stratigraphic and structural geological mapping so far carried out in Australia is likely to be greatly overestimated by uncritical inspection of the latest authoritative geological map of the continent-that so ably compiled by the late Sir'T. W. Edgeworth David. Vast areas geologically coloured on this map are in fact known only from the most meagre field data, some of Which even include observations of distant views from which the so-called "geology" has been indicated in' reconnaissance reports.This applies to large areas in Cape York Peninsula; the plateau of Arnhem Land, and its margins except on the west where the Pine Creek mineral belt is better known; to the Desert Basin of Western Australia, practically the whole of the western half of the Northern Territory, much of east-central Western Australia, and northwestern New South Wales. Other vast areas are, more happily perhaps, left blank. It is true that prospecting parties have, at various times and with varying degrees of thoroughness, traversedparts of these little-known regions, often, however, in the search for gold or the.more obvious types of metalliferous mineral deposits and, furthermore, too often without leaving any written account of their examination, or with very sketchy details supplied. Unpublished geological surveys also cover some parts of these regions, but, on the whole, the picture we can draw of the regional deployment of rock masses in Australia is far less full than even David's map, with its obvious blanks, presents to us.Lest the practical mineral seeker among us should be inclined to place too much reliance on the prospecting to which I have referred.as giving him a straight hint of what country to keep out of, we may point to the recent discovery of a major sedimentary basin in the east KimberllilYs on which Dr. Teichert will have more to say. And that there are new metalliferous mineral deposits to be foundin parts of these little-known areas no one can doubt, for, after all, new discoveries are made from time to time in areas so well-known as the Victorian gold-fields. I take it then that regional geological mapping is a necessary concomitant of the further development of Australia's mineral resources-but I am not of the school that places it first on the list of priorities, and furthermore I believe that there can be a royal road to regional mapping-an inspired approach based on knowledge already gained and led to fruition by field surveys in key areas, by which there may be obtained a result giving a significantly close approach to actuality with only a fraction of the work that would be required for detailed field surveys on a systematic basis. I believe that a policy of rapid reconnaissance of such a type should be adhered to, especially in view of present deficiencies in numbers of geologists available for all purposes in Australia. The details that must eventually be sought can, I believe, be filled in later as the whole country becomes more developed and amenable to detailed surveys.

Mill operators are entrusted to manage what are normally the largest capital assets on any mine site. Achieving maximum utilisation and lowest costs that drive operating margins are realised by applying well known fundamentals of good housekeeping and proactive (as opposed to reactive) maintenance programmes. Historically, maintenance and operations staff are bought in late during the construction stage and often do not have the time, know how or tools to put in place (let alone train the incumbent staff) a functioning maintenance system before commissioning starts. They then get drawn into a reactive maintenance paradigm as teething problems post commissioning are dealt with and day to day issues envelop the line tradesmen and supervisors. Additionally, even when some semblance of a planned maintenance system is established, it is often the case that over time personnel and cultural issues mask the development of problematic maintenance practices. As has been observed by the authors on many occasions, even when some basic programmed maintenance system is in place, the collection of maintenance data is often inaccurate, incomplete and not subject to analysis. The net result is of course a high incidence of machine failure leading to lower than expected availability, which ultimately translates to lower revenue and higher net maintenance costs. The time taken and the cost to repair a failed machine is always greater than the timely and planned repair of a worn machine.Upon review of a number of processing plants around the world, especially gold and small base metal operations, it is apparent that companies need to implement maintenance systems whereby the operators are not overwhelmed with data and can manage by exception. Inadequate or inaccurate data collection and analysis result in poor decisions being made and misguided actions taken. GR Engineering Services (GRES) has developed a system to enable the custodians of mining plant assets to make more effective and effective use of maintenance data by being able to focus on the indicators of plant deterioration and to programme concurrent maintenance activities to maximise plant availability and utilisation.This paper outlines the structures that can be employed to address the challenges of implementing a proactive asset management system. Some design and feasibility studies have been made into possible methods of economic recovery of sulphur from smelter gases emitted at Western Mining Corporation's Nickel smelter at KalgoorIie in Western Australia. The smelter discharges some 330 000 tonne/yr of sulphur dioxide in a stream of approximately 6 per cent by volume of S02.Three possible recovery methods have been considered:1. The manufacture of sulphuric acid using the contact process.2. The concentration of sulphur dioxide to a pure form using dimethyl aniline as an absorbing medium.3. The reduction to elemental sulphur using natural gas as the reducing agent.Design studies were carried out by final year chemical engineering undergraduate students at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) in 1981 under the supervision of the author and other teaching staff of the chemical engineering department. These studies indicate that sulphuric acid manufacture is the economically preferred recovery route.Markets for sulphuric acid include several potential mineral processing applications and the established fertiliser industry.Sulphuric acid is currently manufactured in a number of plants located at coastal regions of Western Australia using imported sulphur. The sulphuric acid is then used for superphosphate or titanium dioxide pigment manufacture at adjacent plants.The possibility is considered of manufacturing superphosphate at Kalgoorlie from locally produced acid obtained from the smelter gases and from phosphate rock railed to the site from the coast. The advantages of such a scheme include improved scale and technology of operation compared with some existing coastal operations, use of a waste material to replace imported sulphur, and avoidance of costs and hazards associated with railing large quantities of sulphuric acid.

Copper, zinc, lead, and silver in the discordant magmatic-hydrothermal orebody of the Conrad Mine, N.S.W., all have a relatively high mean abundance. Any single concordant sulphide orebody containing the same metals has a similar order of mean abundance of only one or two of these, particularly copper, copper and zinc, or zinc and lead.The relative abundances of the metals in the Conrad orebody vary more widely than in concordant orebodies, and the lead-zinc-silver and copper-zinc-lead relationships are significantly different.INTRODUCTIONIn previous investigations of metal abundances in sulphide ores, the basis of selection of the orebodies was their form, and to some extent their geological setting, rather than hypotheses concerning their origin. In all cases they were generally concordant with the bedding of the sedimentary or meta-sedimentary rocks enclosing them, and most occurred in volcanic-sedimentary sequences. Their mineralogies were simple, and they were copper, copper-zinc, zinc or lead-zinc rich in composition. Most were of the type ascribed by several authors to exhalative-sedimentary processes.In one of these investigations (Stanton, 1958), it was pointed out that since the metals in ores of this type showed similar abundance patterns and behaviour, it would clearly be of interest to examine, and to compare with them, orthomagmatic and vein types, unquestionably derived from their igneous rock associates.The present investigation is concerned with a single orebody, of clearly discordant type, and of indisputable hydrothermal origin. The abundance and behaviour of copper, zinc, lead, and silver have been determined and compared to similar data fOl!' the concordant type. Such a comparison tests the possibility that metal abundance patterns of base metal ores may be indicative of the mode of ore deposition.

Detailed investigation was carried out on the dephosphorization of a number of phosphorus-rich manganese or samples of India by leaching with dilute sulphuric acid. Various process parameters like concentration of acid, liquid-solid ratio, temperature of leaching, time of leaching, and particle size of the ore were studied in detail for the three samples of manganese ore from central India, and optimum values were worked out on a laboratory scale. Preliminary studies show that certain ores which are not easily amemlible to appreciable dephosphorization by leaching with dilute sulphuric acid can be made amenable by :roasting to 700-900°C before leaching.
