"Column leach tests are used frequently to predict recoveries and reagent consumption for nickel laterite heap leaches. These column leaches often run for more than 100 days and therefore require long-term monitoring and data analysis to achieve the desired information. To minimise the cost and time required to obtain relevant information for nickel laterite heap leaching, we have developed a small-scale hydrogeometallurgical laboratory test to serve as a proxy to column, and by inference, heap leaching. In excess of 50 leach tests were conducted using four different small-scale proxy and column leach tests to compare predicted nickel recoveries, acid consumption and leach kinetics and to determine whether insight into potential scale-up effects can be obtained. The most promising proxy test was identified and we achieved a statistically significant recovery and acid consumption correlations between this test and the column leach tests. The accuracy of the small-scale tests was confirmed by column tests run on new laterite ores. Folklore suggests that oxidation is detrimental to sulfide mineral flotation, and in many instances is the reason given for values reporting in the tailing. However, while a considerable body of work examining galena oxidation is available in the literature there are very few studies that investigate the consequences of galena oxidation on its subsequent flotation in base metal sulfide ores. This work clearly demonstrates that pyrite forms a galvanic couple with galena, due to the large difference in their rest potentials, and results in accelerated oxidation of galena, particularly as the pyrite content of the ore is increased. The most obvious effect of the galvanic oxidation of galena by pyrite is the release into the system of galena oxidation products, providing an ample supply of lead ions available to activate gangue minerals, most notably of which in lead/zinc ores is sphalerite. The inadvertent activation of sphalerite by lead ions inevitably leads to the recovery of liberated sphalerite into the lead concentrate, and as a consequence a reduction in the lead concentrate grade. That is, a loss of selectivity for galena against sphalerite. If galena oxidation is excessive not only is there a considerable loss in lead concentrate grade, but also a marked decreased in lead recovery as the flotation rates of the gangue minerals increase, until they rival that of galena.

McKinnons open pit gold mine, located within the Cobar Basin in New South Wales, is characterised by complex mineralisation controlled by the intersection of steep faults in the hinge zone of an anticline. Resource estimation using indicator variography and indicator kriging was based on RC drilling on 25 in sections together with grade control RC drilling on 12 in by 12 in and 6 m by 6 in patterns. Rigorous sampling and checking procedures were used to verify the reliability of the drill hole data. Blast hole data was used to assist grade control in defining ore block boundaries.

Bentonites and active earths from N.S.W., previously analysed with respect to occurrence, mineralogy and physical properties have been evaluated for use as bonding agents in quartzose moulding sands in terms of green properties and behaviour both with and without coal dust for iron castings poured at 1400°C.INTRODUCTIONIn the paper by Loughnan .and See (Part I) the occurrence, mineralogy and physical properties of the fuller's earth and bentonites of New South Wales were discussed and it was shown that some of the materials approached the quality of Wyoming bentonite. In the present paper the same samples from Marulan (Bl), Boggabri (B2), Wingen (B3), Muswellbrook (B6), Swansea (B8), Dubbo (89) and Trida (Bll) have been investigated with respect to their potential value as bonding agents in compounded moulding sands. Inaddition, the -20 micron fractions of the Boggabri (B2t) and Swansea (B8t,> were recovered and the former converted to a sodium clay, in order to assesE; the beneficiation possibilities. It has long been recognised that narrow vein mining needs innovative approaches to mine access and mining methods in order to improve the economics of this vital part of the mining industry. The mining equipment used currently requires large openings in narrow vein-type deposits making mining operations uneconomical. In view of this and other shortcomings of the current mining practices, a study was initiated to investigate the potential of using low profile electric loader with mounted conveyor in conjunction with the electric monorail haulage system (EMTS) to load and haul the blasted material, particularly in decline development and main haulages. Computer simulation based on the General Purpose Simulation System/Henrikson (GPSS/H) is used to model the system and evaluate its performance. The results are compared with those for conventional mining using trucks and loaders. The EMTS provides competitive haulage rates in substantially smaller excavations than is currently achievable. According to simulation results, the electric loader in conjunction with the EMTS had the same number of blasts as the conventional system and hence the same advance rate of 3.33 m per 12 hour shift. In recent times many groups have indicated that they would like ore reserve estimation to be numeric and objective. Whilst sampling, geological, mining and mathematical principles may be used to analyse the data, all ore reserve methods require the use of experience factors and as such are value j ddgment statements.

The Gladstone region, as one of the most industrially intense regions in Australia, uses significant quantities of fresh water. Awoonga Dam, situated on the Boyne River, is the only major source of water in the region. The current typical annual usage is 53 GL (Porteous, 2006) and approximately 80 per cent of the water is used by heavy industry (Gladstone Area Water Board, 2004). Until relatively recently, there has been ready and easy access to raw water for industrial use. The recent drought, which resulted in severe water restrictions in 2002 and 2003, emphasised the importance of water for a dominant industrial region like Gladstone. Although now in the process of changing, the typical contractual arrangements in the past have provided little financial incentive for efficient water use. From research undertaken on potential water reuse opportunities, several key questions have emerged related to water management in an industrial region such as Gladstone. This paper highlights these key questions, presents findings from recent regional strategies and assesses the potential for water reuse. Even though there is no clear-cut financial incentive for reusing water, there could be stronger regional and risk mitigation drivers for doing so. Initiatives to incorporate adaptive capacity through collaborative industrial synergies would allow for robustness and resilience in water security, leading to long-term sustainable water management across the Gladstone region.

Batch experiments in a 0.6 m diameter mill have shown that improvements of about 13 per cent in the efficiency of energy utilisation can be realised in ball mills by replacing 25 per cent of the ball charge by an equivalent volume of cost-free critical size pebbles from AG/SAG mills. For a mill of a given size, speed and charge filling, the rate of size reduction of ore particles depends on (i) the frequency of grinding media collisions (ii) the probability of capture of ore particles between the colliding grinding media (iii) the probability of fracture of the captured particles. The probability of fracture depends on the magnitude of collision energy. The distribution of collision energy into shear and impact events determines the relative strengths of attrition breakage and impact breakage. The efficiency of energy utilisation depends on which of the two mechanisms of breakage is more desirable in a particular milling stage. In this paper collision data from a series of DEM simulations of a mill charged with steel media and a mixture of steel media and pebbles is presented in energy spectra and spatial distribution maps. The data provides the necessary detail to elucidate the improvements in the efficiency of energy utilisation in ball mills when using a mixture of pebbles and steel media.

As known to the international mining sectors, Hunan province, called as ' Nonferrous Native Area ', is the main base of nonferrous metals Pro- duction in China. There are over 194 nonferrous mines in this province, most of them distribute over the basin of Xiangjiang River. The state of management of wastewater in Hunan's nonferrous mines is outlined.The experiences and economic benefit in the management and treatment of wa- stewater in Bofang and Mayang copper mines, and at Shizhuyuan polymeta- llic mine, are mainly introduced. It concludes with measures and recommendations for future management and treatment of wastewater in Hunan's nonferrous mines.

The Kaltails Project is situated close to the city of Kalgoorlie-Boulder in Western Australia. Located on the south-eastern fringe of the Golden Mile, Kaltails has been in operation since June 1989. The tailings forming the reserve for Kaltails have been derived from 100 years of underground mining on the Golden Mile, but, some of the re.;erve has been retreated in the past. A map of the tailings reserves and treatment plant site is presented as Figure 1. The gold project is a joint venture between Poseidon 90 per cent and Gold Corporation (ten per cent) and is managed by Poseidon Gold Kaltails.

Based on the cubic law, the hydraulic aperture of rock discontinuities has the most significant effect on the hydraulic conductivity of jointed rocks. The hydraulic aperture of rock discontinuities is a stress-dependant parameter and reduces with increasing applied stress. Furthermore, the rock stress increases with increasing depth. Therefore, hydraulic aperture is a depth-dependant parameter. In this paper, new empirical equations are introduced to calculate the hydraulic aperture of rock discontinuities at different depths. These equations were developed on the basis of back analysis of compiled packer tests from different actual cases. They provide the capability to calculate range of variation and average hydraulic aperture when the orientation of discontinuity and field stress tensor are given. Furthermore, it is possible to calculate the hydraulic aperture of rock discontinuities when its value is given for another depth. A hydraulic aperture of 7.7?µm was calculated by this method, comparing well with a reported site value of 8.3?µm for rock discontinuities at the Stripa mine project at a depth of 385?m. The complexities of mining in current economic conditions, where ore extraction schedules are varied on a weekly basis so as to ensure constant supply to the process plant, can result in a number of scenarios that pose geotechnical challenges. This paper presents a case study where alterations in the mining schedule of a particular mine resulted in the necessity to mine under a large uncompacted embankment, ie integrated tailings and mine waste landform. To effectively ensure that ore recovery was maximised, a well-designed slope monitoring system to evaluate design performance and to provide timely warning of impending failures was imperative. In order for an appropriate slope monitoring strategy to be developed, a thorough understanding of the potential slope failure mechanisms, capabilities and limitations of available monitoring techniques is required. Communication of the monitoring results and response strategy to alarms generated by monitoring systems must also be carefully considered to maximise effectiveness. The results of preliminary stability modelling can be used to guide the design of a monitoring system, which in turn can then generate data which can be used to iteratively refine the geotechnical model. The world is becoming an increasingly complex environment to operate within. Adoption and evolution of technology is occurring at a rapid pace and operating spaces are growing in interconnectedness and interdependency. In mining this is evidenced by the large-scale adoption of autonomous machinery, intelligent systems, Internet of Things (IoT) devices, and robotics to realise benefits in optimisation, productivity, and safety. To enable continual delivery and growth in operational performance, and to realise the aforementioned benefits, a new approach for managing mining and metals is required (Mining Review Africa, 2023). This means that an already talent constrained workforce must learn to manage the complexity inherent, evolving, and growing in the environment (Abenov et al, 2023). A key skill that needs to be further developed and deployed to combat these challenges and to enable robust problem solving is that of systems thinking, which is already practiced in pockets within the mining industry. Experience and learning can be leveraged from other industries and their application of systems thinking to ensure that focus is maintained on areas where the benefits from which will be optimised. With targeted application, a workforce capable of effective systems thinking can be the catalyst to optimisation across mining organisations.

With the use of 86 rock drills of the jackhammer type at the West Lyell Open Cuts of the Mt. Lyell Mining & Hailway Co., it is of importance to determine the economic as well as the physical life of these machines. With this purpose in mind records have been kept of the footage bored and the cost of new parts placed in each machine, and the following procedure adopted.A graph is plotted for each machine showing the footage bored as a horizontal line and at each 5,000 feet of boring the total cost of new parts noted on this line. (See l"ig. 1.) Thus at a glance it is possible to see... the amount of work done by each machine and the money spent on it in new parts. However, it is difficult to visualise from this graph the increase in the cost of new parts for each machine as its life advances. To obviate this difficulty a curve is plotted with the cost of new parts as the vertical component and the distance bored as the horizontal component. As before the cost of new parts are taken at each 5,000 feet bored. (See Fig. 2.) The curves so obtained are particularly interesting for two reasons:1. Each machine has its characteristic curve.2. The curve always steepens.Some machines are found to have relatively flat curves, others flat curves for approximately 15,000 feet of boring, and others steep gradients from the begining.This demonstrates that it is not always economic to discard a drill after it has been in service for a certain length of time or after it has bored a specified number of feet. Each drill has its own characteristics and so must not be regarded as one of a class, but considered on its own performance.The following use of these curve diagrams has been made to determine whether a machine has reached the end of its economic life. Technological innovations and emerging analytical capabilities are transforming the way drill samples are analysed, with real-time mineralogical analysis made possible. In addition, new business/technical requirements are challenging long standing processes to incorporate more sources of information during planning in order to improve compliance to plan during mining and processing. Unfortunately, the new sources of information that are added do not always have adequate protocols in place to ensure quality data is collected.Spectral data covering the visible – near – short wave – midwave – longwave range are routinely collected by the Geoscience and Exploration department at BHP Billiton Iron Ore for accurate mineralogical identification. These data are used for geological interpretations (logging and modelling) and prediction of physical variables (metallurgical and geotechnical properties).This paper introduces how sampling and quality assurance / quality control concepts have been applied in the spectral data process. Recent major urban trunk sewer infrastructure projects in Melbourne have involved construction of nearly 10 km of tunnel boring machine (TBM) driven tunnels in a range of geological conditions varying from soft alluvial soils to hard volcanic rock. To provide both construction and permanent access to the new trunk sewer network, a total of 17 shafts between 5 m and 13 m in diameter, and up to 64 m in depth have been constructed. This paper describes the design and construction of the temporary shaft support systems for the shafts.The range and variability of geological conditions at each shaft site required the adoption of the following shaft support systems across the projects – jet grouting, sheet piles, diaphragm wall, secant pile, contiguous pile, reinforced shotcrete rings and rock bolts.Groundwater control, settlement, TBM launch and reception chambers at the shaft base, chambers and TBM launches at mid-depth of shafts, connection shafts between new and existing sewers and bypass pumping shafts are among the challenges that have been met.This paper reports on the some of the challenges involved and experience gained in developing design and construction solutions for large diameter shafts that are excavated within varying geology in Melbourne over the past three years.

A study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the three types of sample grinders routinely used in the mining industry for the sample preparation of gold ores with particular emphasis placed on testing their capacity to produce a representative assay sample of coarse gold ores. The grinders used in this study are the Labtechnics LM5, the Mixermill 4010 ringmill and the Keegor vertical spindle pulveriser, commonly called a Keegormill. The study was based on the preparation of samples from two sources of known coarse gold ore, the Union Reefs Gold Mine and the Brocks Creek Gold Mine in the Pine Creek region of the Northern Territory of Australia, and a fine gold ore which was from the Macraes Gold Mine in New Zealand. The Union Reefs Mine contains visible coarse gold with 30 per cent to 40 per cent of the gold in the plus 75 μm fraction of milled ore. Discreet particles up to 5 mm have been recorded, Hellsten (1994). Union Reefs Gold Mine recovers 40 per cent of its bullion production through a gravity circuit, Riches (1997). Brocks Creek ore contains visible coarse gold with gravity bullion production fluctuating between 50 per cent and 65 per cent, depending on the mill feed. Average gravity bullion production from the Brocks Creek Mine is 55 per cent, Wilke (1997). The average gold grain size of Macraes Mine ore is 20 μm with 40 per cent of the gold in sub 10 μm particles. No gravity bullion is produced from the Macraes Mine, O'Keefe (1997). The testwork demonstrated conclusively that it is possible to prepare a representative sample for assay, of a coarse gold ore, when a Keegormill is used to pulverise the sample to a nominal 100 μm particle size (90 per cent passing a 100 μm screen by wet sieving). Both the Mixermill and the Labtechnics LM5 failed to prepare a representative sample, even when ground to a nominal 75 μm particle size.

Incidents that trap miners in underground mines have serious consequences for the miners and the mine operators involved. It is of utmost importance that mine operators utilise all available tools when trying to locate and rescue trapped miners. From testing conducted at underground hard rock mines, Cumming-Potvin et al (2013) found that pre-existing microseismic monitoring systems, which are routinely used for seismic risk management, have the potential to be used for detecting and locating trapped miners.This paper reflects on the Anzac Day seismic event that trapped two miners at Tasmania Mine, Beaconsfield, on 25 April 2006. The Anzac Day event occurred at 2123 on a Tuesday evening. Rescuers were unable to confirm that the trapped miners had survived until 1930 on Sunday evening. It is not possible to speculate on how the rescue operation may have been different had the technology to use the microseismic monitoring system for the purpose of detecting the trapped miners been available. However, it almost certainly would have been different. The recent research project has demonstrated that knowing the fate of the Beaconsfield miners might have been achievable up to 100 hours earlier than was the case in 2006. That knowledge would have been invaluable to the rescue effort.By examining the seismic array at the Tasmania Mine, the reliability of detection over the working levels of the mine could be quantified. Had the methodology been available, adding six additional sensors (at a cost of $40 000), would have been sufficient to increase the likelihood of detection to greater than 90 per cent in the working levels of the mine. "An accurate prediction of benefit for some types of ore may require not just the ore grade, but a whole compositional characterisation of the estimates; that is, its full mineral composition including waste composition and nuisance elements. An example is Nickel laterite ores, where Ni/Co content must be complemented by estimates of many other elements, as these might have a notable impact on ore processing.Estimates are often obtained with (co-)kriging or co-simulation; however, geostatistics applied to compositional data may yield spurious and inconsistent results because of the constant sum constraint. The log-ratio approach avoids such problems. It proposes a three-step procedure: data are mapped to a set of log ratios of components; for example, the additive log-ratio transformation (alr) transformed scores are modelled with an appropriate fully multivariate geostatistical toolbox; for example, direct/cross-semivariograms and co-kriging or co-simulation results are back-transformed to the original units.Some practical aspects may make the application of this technique difficult: the assumption of Gaussianity and the high dimensionality of the compositions combined with the need for using multivariate methods. This contribution compares several ways of treating compositional data (combining normal score transformation, log-ratio transformations, and minimum/maximum autocorrelation factor (MAF) decomposition) with respect to their ability to generate sensible simulations. The various approaches considered are illustrated with a Nickel laterite data set for which ten variables are available. Both theoretical considerations and illustration results suggest that the best combination is (log)ratio-normal score transform-MAF, in this order. The factors so obtained are closer to Gaussian, approximately spatially decorrelated and can be simulated independently. Simulations can later be recombined to alr-simulations, which in turn may be converted back to point compositions. The resulting simulated compositions are compared with a full Gaussian co-simulation of the raw data. The log-ratio methods show reasonable to good reproduction of mean values, and distribution of the data set and by construction satisfy the total sum constraint, in contrast to the simulations based on raw data for which the total sums fluctuate strongly.CITATION:Mueller, U, Tolosana-Delgado, R and van den Boogaart, K G, 2014.
