Pre-drainage experiments have been conduct- ed at Appin, Cook, John Darling, Leichhardt, Macquarie, Metropolitan and Moura No. 2 Collieries. Appin (550 m deep) experiences particular gas problems in development drivages, and the almost pure CH4 seam gas makes difficult tiro compliance with statutory maxima in intakes and returns. Patterns of 43 mm diameter drain- a,.;e holes drilled ahead and laterally into virgin coal have improved gas conditions in working places and have allowed tolerable advance rates. Cook, Leichhardt, Metropolitan and Moura No,. 2 Collieries have experienced gas and stress phenomena ranging from conical bursts less than one tonne to full scale instantan- -us outbursts of hundreds of tonnes with tens ,f thousands of cubic metres of seam gas. Gas ~Irainage experiments with patterns of holes up a,, 200 mm diameter have been undertaken with ;,;siness monitors on the coal to establish .lative effectiveness. There are various methods currently in use to determine detonation performance of bulk explosive products including velocity of detonation (VOD), high speed photographic analysis, fragmentation analysis and unconfined detonation of samples. For assessment prior to detonation the current practice is limited to a measurement of cup density. This paper presents additional techniques that have been developed to provide measurement and assessment of bulk explosive products. Techniques applicable prior to detonation include a mobile laboratory to allow on-site chemical and physical analysis of sensitised products and ‘in-hole density’ measurement to monitor the in-hole density during sleep time. Assessment of detonation performance is achieved using detonation pressure sensors. These sensors allow measurement of detonation pressure, average VOD, propagation time and magnitude of the pressure induced in the explosive column by detonation of adjacent blastholes.CITATION:Cavanough, G, Torrance, A C, Rock, J and Olsson, A, 2015. "The Mbalam Iron Ore Project covers mineralisation in two areas of metamorphosed hematitic banded iron formation (itabirite) in the north-west Congo Craton; namely at Mbarga in south-east Cameroon and at Nabeba in north-west Republic of Congo. The site locations are shown in Figures 1 and 2.The Mbalam Project history is an example of a compressed, yet highly successful, exploration timetable. Due to the thick inaccessible equatorial forest location, the first access was by helicopter in February 2007 at the Mbarga Deposit. Drilling commenced four months later in June 2007. A maiden JORC Code compliant æhigh-grade hematiteÆ inferred mineral resource (190 Mt at 60 per cent Fe) was defined in May 2008, followed by a maiden æitabirite hematiteÆ inferred resource in July 2008 (1.2 Bt at 37 per cent Fe). Subsequently, road access to Nabeba was established in January 2010, with a maiden high-grade hematite inferred mineral resource (200 Mt at 63 per cent Fe) identified only five months later in June 2010. A maiden itabirite hematite inferred resource at Nabeba was announced in June 2012 (1.4 Bt at 34 per cent Fe). The success of the exploration programs has been due to two main factors: Establishment of high-quality camps and facilities at Mbarga and later at Nabeba in Republic of Congo. Exploration support included satellite links for site servers and communications, field logging computers, data acquisition software, an on-site sample preparation laboratory, portable hand-held X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and company-owned drill rigs from 2009. An experienced and dynamic technical support group based in Perth to provide database facilities, data evaluation, internal auditing and software support, resulting in expedited resource estimation and economic evaluation with state-of-the-art mining software. In June 2012, Sundance Resources Ltd announced the current mineral resources for the project of 775.4 Mt at 57.2 per cent Fe of high-grade hematite and 4.047 Bt at 36.3 per cent Fe of itabirite hematite. In December 2012, high-grade hematite ore reserves of 436.3 Mt at 62.6 per cent Fe were announced. These world-class resources and reserves have been delineated and evaluated in a very rapid time frame. LongWangGou coalmine auxiliary inclined shaft heading face has a large section, fast heading speed, and large dust production. The problems of high concentration and wide distribution of dust in the roadway air are very prominent. To improve the efficiency of roadway ventilation and dustremoval, long-compression and short-suction (after this referred to as LCSS) are adopted. The dust concentration and airflow field distribution in the roadway are numerically simulated by FLUENT. The change of the position between the pressure duct and the exhaust duct and the different pressure-extraction ratios affect the distribution of airflow velocity, the formation of vortex zone, and the distribution of dust concentration in the roadway. When Ly = 25 m, Lc = 5.0 m, W = 1.2, a wind curtain is formed at 5 m in front of the heading face to prevent dust from spreading deeper into the roadway.

Worldwide iron ore feed grades are trending downwards and will continue to do so with the increasing difficulties of upgrading ores. This has led to operations looking for ways to capture current tailings that still contain valuable material. In the past, these were acceptable to dispose of, but this practice is no longer economically feasible. With the increasing trend of re-mining previous tailings deposits that could be decades old, new equipment designs have been introduced to upgrade current or historic beneficiation plants. These designs can effectively upgrade these tailings to saleable products.Outotec conducted test programs for upgrading iron ore tailings from flotation rejects, thickener underflow or tailings dumps on samples provided by customers around the globe. The studies utilised Outotec’s SLon vertically pulsating high-gradient magnetic separator in combination with preprocessing equipment such as low-intensity magnetic separation, screen or scrubber and flotation for downstream processing of the magnetic concentrate. A review of the equipment required to economically process these tailings is provided, along with testing data and industrial implementation examples. The effect of different operational and design parameters on Fe grade and recovery from processing each tailings sample has been highlighted.CITATION:Jain, R and Sherrell, I, 2015. Reflectance spectroscopy is now an established technique for mineral exploration and ore characterisation. The efficacy of the technique as a tool to characterise the main iron ore and gangue mineralogy at African Minerals Ltd’s Simbili iron ore deposit in north-central Sierra Leone was tested through reflectance spectroscopic analysis of 13 000 pulped drill reserve samples using CSIRO’s HyLogger-1™ system. Specifically, integration of reflectance spectral data with more traditional methods of analysis, such as geochemical analysis and Satmagan measurements, characterised the mineralogy (ie hematite versus goethite) of the oxidised ore at Simbili, quantified the Al associated with goethite and hematite and evaluated the distribution of the main gangue minerals – kaolinite and gibbsite. Relative changes in the Fe2+/Fe3+-bearing oxide and silicate mineralogy, based on mineral indices derived from reflectance spectroscopic measurements, appeared well-related to changes in the ore profile mineralogy consistent with the main ore types identified at Simbili, as representative of an oxidised banded iron formation sequence. Spectral calibration models, developed from a well-characterised training set of mineral mixtures, representative of the oxidised ore zone mineralogy were used to quantify the distribution of Al associated with kaolinite and gibbsite and the iron oxides, goethite and hematite. Combining these mineral spectral parameters with compositional data enabled the differentiation of Al-substituted goethite and hematite and resulted in the identification of low Al-bearing, or ‘clean’, goethite and hematite from high Al-bearing, or ‘dirty’, goethite and hematite. Spectral quantification of the iron oxide Al composition provides a far more rapid means of quantifying the Al substitution in iron oxides at the deposit scale compared to traditional techniques such as X-ray diffraction analysis. It also enables a level of volumetric characterisation and the potential for large-scale (ie three-dimensional) mapping, which was not previously possible with other techniques. The potential of the technique was also highlighted when mapping the distribution of the main Al-bearing contaminants (gibbsite and kaolinite) identified in the oxidised ore zone at Simbili. Delineation of such zones provides a guide to managing the most appropriate processing options (ie upgrade potential) within a mineralogical framework. Three-dimensional modelling of the gangue phase distribution may also allow the mapping of lithological and/or structural controls that may be prevalent at Simbili. This work highlights the value in the application of HyLogging™ technology for rapid resource characterisation, particularly for volumetric identification and mapping the distribution of both the economic and gangue phases, which otherwise would be difficult to achieve. As such, the technique can provide a fast and inexpensive means to evaluate ore and gangue mineralogy at the deposit scale and provide a first-pass assessment of the mineralogy and compositional attributes, with the potential to better predict ore metallurgical properties.CITATION:Wells, M A and Ramanaidou, E R, 2015. The Kalgoorlie Golden Mile is proposed as an Archaean volcanogenic-type deposit, modified and redistributed along later-developed structures. Rich pyritctelluride and Green Leader gold mineralization is associated with the end phase of basic volcanism and, in a general sense, is confined to a broad interface zone between the products of marine basic volcanism and later acid volcanism. There is virtualIy no ore associated with the main body of acid volcanics.Green Leader is the local name of a type of ore that occurs at some igneous rock contacts in association with graphitic sediments and layered acidic tuffs. It is characteristicalIy green, of various shades, and commonly yields very high gold assays, the reasons for which are not apparent in hand specimen.Carbonates, carbonaceous shales, tuffites, rich gold ores, and acid and intermediate dykes, alI indicating a common heritage, are features common to the main ore hosts, viz. the Paringa Basalt (Calc Schist) and theGolden Mile Dolerite ("Quartz Dolerite Greenstone").Several probably related fracture systems have reconstituted most, but not all, of the original deposits into a large number of steep tabular lodes.Includes two sets of discussions and comments from later Proceedings volumes.

Collector and frother molecules in sulfide mineral flotation are thought to have separate roles in the flotation process, where the collector selectively hydrophobizes the mineral surface and the frother adsorbs onto the bubble surface, inhibiting bubble coalescence. Molecular interactions have been observed between these molecules which allow them to co-adsorb at each of the respective interfaces, improving pulp phase recovery. This study investigated the molecular interactions between sodium diethyl dithiophosphate (SDEDTP) and hexanol, and the mechanism by which these interactions improve the recovery of galena. In this study each of the respective interfaces were investigated for the adsorption of SDEDTP. The adsorption of SDEDTP on galena was measured by UV-Vis spectrophotometry and isothermal titration calorimetry. At the air-water interface foam stability and pulp bubble coalescence was used to quantitatively discern if there are interactions between SDEDTP and hexanol. Microflotation and induction time experiments were performed to determine the effect of SDEDTP, hexanol and their mixtures on mineral recovery and bubble-particle attachment. The results of all these tests were collated to determine if SDEDTP-hexanol mixtures synergistically improve sulfide mineral recovery. It was found that SDEDTP reduced bubble coalescence in the pulp demonstrating activity at the airwater interface. Together SDEDTP and hexanol synergistically enhanced foam stability. This indicated that there are attractive molecular interactions between these reagents. Even though DTP did not adsorb onto galena, DTP-frother mixtures synergistically improved the recovery and attachment probability of this mineral. Adsorption studies with aeration showed that DTP in the presence of a frother transfers from the air-water interface to the galena mineral-water interface during bubble-particle collision. It was proposed that the transfer of hexanol through the thin film enhanced the kinetics of film thinning between the bubble and the particle by destabilising the thin film thus improving pulp phase mineral recovery.

Recent advancements in understanding the detonation process are noteworthy, but they are still based on somewhat hypothetical situations. The actual variables that are essential parts of normal blasting practice have not yet been taken into account in such treatments. These include the various initiation practices employed to detonate a column of explosive, from single point initiation to multi-point initiation in blast holes, and the effect on detonation characteristics of both detonators and explosives under multi-deck and multi-hole blasting conditions. The in-the-hole velocity of detonation (VOD) of an industrial explosive is dependent on explosive’s charge diameter and blasthole diameter. The relationship between blasthole diameter and VOD provides a fundamental guideline to the rate of energy conversion and energy release within the detonation front on the interaction of explosives with the confining medium.The in-the-hole VOD of explosives was measured at four experimental sites in India for different blasthole diameters, ie 150 mm to 311 mm, but for identical explosive composition being same particle size, density, viscosity and loaded into blastholes with the same degree of confinement. The results of the studies demonstrated that there is definite relationship in in-the-hole VOD of the explosive and the diameter of the blast hole. The study also confirmed that the explosives initiated with concentrated boosters yielded higher VOD in comparison to those explosives that were initiated with multi-point priming. The measured increase in VOD of explosives for increasing diameter of holes was up to 24 per cent. The rate of change in in-the-hole VOD of explosives increases with increasing blasthole diameter. It can be further stated that the in-the-hole VOD of the explosive reaches a fairly constant value after reaching a limiting/threshold diameter of 311 mm.

Traditionally pit optimisation and scheduling is carried out assuming that the resources, the commodity prices and production costs are all known. Once the pit contour and the mining schedule have been determined, geostatistical simulations can be used to assess the impact of the uncertainty in the resources on the pit design and the schedule, and likewise stochastic simulations can be used to test its robustness to fluctuations in costs and prices. But it would be more interesting to have a dynamic procedure for optimising the pit as the resources become better known and as economic factors such as commodity prices and costs evolve over time. This paper presents a novel approach for doing this. Rather than working with millions of small selective mining units, it was decided to work with large blocks, called macro-blocks. Mining sequences are defined as the quantities to be extracted from each macro-block in each time period. Feasible mining sequences are mining sequences that respect the accessibility constraints, and also the geometric constraints on the amounts that can be extracted from any one block over time, or from all the active blocks at a given time. Having defined feasible mining sequences, their mathematical properties were studied. It was found that natural breakpoints occur in the sequences when one set of blocks have been completely mined out, thereby opening up access to others. It was discovered that families of sequences exist, and that they are convex and closed under certain types of row permutation operations. Convexity is an advantage when optimising. The closure property opens up the possibility of mixing and matching subsequences of rows in the sequences. Another interesting property is that the sequences form branching families, rather like the binomial and trinomial trees used to model prices in finance and in real options.It is easy to generate large numbers of feasible mining sequences randomly. A two-step procedure is used to find the best one (or the best few) using three economic criteria: expected NPV,the probability of a negative NPV, and the percentage of years when the cash flow is negative. The procedure was tested on a synthetic gold mine based on the characteristics of the Essakane mine in Burkina Faso. The results were encouraging.

Current climate change projections suggest both an increase in the intensity of significant rainfall events and an increase in the variability of rainfall in some regions of Australia. It is necessary for mine site owners and operators to understand the effects that this potential shift in climate may have on their operations. The ability to maintain compliance with discharge regulations and operational security for those sites that rely on surface water run-off harvesting may be negatively impacted if some current climate change projections are realised. Although current regulations require the preparation of water management plans, these are generally developed using historical climate records for the site in question and as such do not give any indication of a siteÆs resilience to the influences of climate change.This study compares design and operational considerations for a case study mine site using historical rainfall records and modified records representing climate change projections. The future climate models are invariably broad scale and are limited in their capacity to be downscaled to a reasonable resolution for developing a site water balance. Instead the local historical data set has been modified to concentrate precipitation to peak periods and propagated through the model. The study looks at the siteÆs response to the potential changes in climate.It is shown that if current climate change projections are realised, this will have a significant effect on both the necessary size of designed surface water infrastructure and operational considerations on-site. A discussion is presented on the potential risks that climate change presents to mine sites and the range of options that could be considered to mitigate these risks. PT FreeportÆs Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) Mine is the latest block cave mine within the East Ertsberg Skarn System (EESS).Issues with undercutting and stress concentrations at the extraction level were experienced, leading to reduced pillar strength.The extraction level-related issues became more pronounced, leading to local panel drift collapse, in an area that was over 100 per cent extraction. A review of ground conditions, panel collapse descriptions, and factors contributing to panel collapse are presented in this paper.

To study the creep properties and the energy evolution characteristics of the weakly cemented rock (WCR) in western China, the creep deformation damage law of weakly cemented mudstone (WCM) under graded loading and the energy evolution characteristics of each creep stage were analysed based on the triaxial graded loading creep test of WCR. The results showed that as the confining pressure increased, the creep failure strength of the WCM increased from 9.5 to 24.8 MPa, and the relative displacement of the mineral particles in the mudstone increased gradually, resulting in a reduction in the fracture angle from 79.7° to 58.3°. At the same stress level, the strain energy Ue, the total energy U, and the dissipation energy Ud all increased as the confining pressure increased, but the growth rates of U and Ud decreased gradually, while the growth rate of Ue remained high. At the end of the stable creep stage, Ue increased slowly with the confining pressure, while U and Ud increased rapidly with the confining pressure, and their growth rates were basically the same. At the end of the accelerated creep stage, the growth trends of these three energies were all positively correlated with the confining pressure, Ue was significantly lower than that at the end of the stable creep stage, and Ud and U were further increased. These results revealed the unique creep properties and energy evolution characteristics of the WCR, providing a theoretical basis for long-term stability control of roadways that are built with WCR.

The ash content of coal can be determined using radioisotope X-ray techniques. A number of overseas applications of X-ray techniques are described; however these suffer from the disadvantage of either not compensating for iron variations or, if compensation is used, using X-rays of low penetration with consequent sampling difficulties. Current Australian Atomic Energy Commiss- ion (AAEC) research on X-ray techniques is aimed at overcoming the limitations of these methods. The AAEC method involves making measurements proportional to mass absorption coefficients of X-rays in coal at two energies. Calculations and experiments with X-rays up to 35 keV have shown that ash content can be determined to about 1 wt.%. This work is being extended to higher X-ray energies to enable the technique to be used directly on a conveyor belt or in a hopper. Neutron techniques can be used to measure the concentration of specific elements such as carbon, hydrogen and silicon in coal. Their con- centration is correlated to the coal parameters of interest. Methods of moisture determination based on hydrogen measurement and ash determina- tion based on silicon and aluminium measurement are described. Recovery of gold from gold ores has been driven by the available technology and its configuration in the process plant flow sheet.Conventional practice in test work programs has the ore being ground fine (to 106 or 75 microns) to ensure liberation ahead of leaching or flotation. This paper identifies that, in many cases, gold and gold sulfide carriers will liberate and be recovered to a concentrate at much coarser sizes.There is an exponential increase in energy consumption relative to particle size reduction. This impact becomes extreme when comparing crushing a product to 1 mm against grinding to 75?microns.The resultant reduction in energy consumption when liberating and separating at 1 mm or coarser compared to grinding to 75 microns can be in the order of 15 kWh/t or 60 per cent of energy in the comminution circuit.Recovery of free gold and gold sulfide carriers by preconcentration (using continuous gravity devices such as the InLine Pressure Jig), combined with flotation of the fine gold and gold carriers, can result in significant power savings.There are multiple locations within the flow sheet that can be targeted using this process, including recovery in the cyclone underflow of existing plants, preconcentration ahead of the plant or complete greenfield, low-energy process plants designed from first principles based on data from a Gekko developed test work regime.We will describe the process of defining mineralogy in the laboratory and the decision-making process through to actual applications in the field.Several examples will be provided, including a South African Witwatersrand gold ore, several Australian gold ores and others, indicating the benefits of this process and where it has been brought to commercial reality.CITATION:Gray, A H, Davies, M and Theletsane, G, 2014. Ok Tedi Mine is located eighteen kilometers from the Irian Jaya border in the Star Mountains, Western Province, Papua New Guinea. Sequential flotation concentrators produce a copper / gold concentrate for market, and a pyrite concentrate for environmental containment, with low sulphur tailings from the pyrite flotation sequence being discharged to river. Strict sulphur assay targets are set for the riverine discharge. Current porphyry and skarn ore blends from open pit operations at Mt. Fubilan will cease by 2017. However, drill cores indicate an economic ore body in the skarn ores surrounding and below the current pit limits. With proposed mining from a western pit wall ‘cut back’ and an eastern pit wall underground operation, potential for ore ageing in sub level cave underground stockpiles is apparent. With little information in the literature, Ore Ageing test work at prefeasibility level consisted of multiple one tonne stockpiles of -50 mm crushed rock. For the bankable feasibility study, a successful test work program was implemented utilizing 40 tonne ROM ore stockpiles composed of exposed pit extensions of future ores. Realistic ageing profiles of Skarn ores were obtained from one tonne monthly samples subjected to laboratory testing. Test work outcomes included:• Similar ore ageing profiles from both the pre feasibility study (PFS) and feasibility study (FS) programs, suggesting ore susceptibility to oxidation has greater effect in ore ageing than rock size for Ok Tedi skarns. • Laboratory rougher flotation of pyrite showed significant variation in sulphur recovery rate, suggesting three classes of pyrite floatability.• Laboratory rougher flotation of both copper and pyrite for up to 19 months ore ageing from 11 stockpiles, suggested three stages in the ore ageing process.

The D47 and D39 Mechanical Dynamic Extra bolts (D47 MDX and D39 MDX) have been developed in response to the ever-increasing demand from the mining industry for rock bolts with high dynamic capacity. To prove such capacity, Sandvik has performed numerous in situ dynamic testing with the unique Dynamic Test Rig (DTR) (Darlington, Rataj and Roach, 2019; Roach, Rataj and Darlington, 2019). To complement the collection of testing data, Sandvik, in collaboration with the Swedish Research Institute for Mining, Metallurgy and Materials (Swerim) have performed additional experiments in laboratory condition using Swerim’s new drop test rig. This rig utilises a momentum transfer method to apply a dynamic load to the bolt. The sample falls together with the mass until the support beam impacts stationary dampers and the momentum energy is transferred to the bolt. Part of the charged energy is released by the dumpers while the remaining portion is absorbed by plastic deformation and/or displacement of the ground support element. The D47 and D39 MDX bolts have been tested at Swerim’s test facility with different levels of input energy. Six tests were performed at the specification energy of 36 kJ and six tests were carried out with the maximum allowable energy from the facility, ie 44 kJ. The bolts confirmed their dynamic performance absorbing the input energy without failure. The D47 MDX bolt absorbed up to 33 kJ with 150 mm displacement while the D39 MDX bolt absorbed up to 35 kJ with 162 mm displacement. This work will present an overview of the drop test rig at Swerim’s facility and a collection of results of the test performed on the D47 and D39 MDX bolts. The test method and results will be analysed and compared to the tests carried out with the in situ DTR.

The magnitude of the payloads carried by mine haul trucks can have a strong influence on the mine production rates and costs. Consequently control of truck payloads is highly desirable, but in many mines the unavailability of means for measuring payloads reliably, accurately and easily has resulted in a low level of control over truck payloads. Consideration is given to two techniques which are applicable to the measurement of payloads carried by mine haul trucks, namely truck weighing and direct measurement of payloads with truck based systems. Accuracy assessments for two types of truck weighing platforms and two prototype truck based direct payload measurement systems are provided. Results show that weighing platforms based on hydraulic components have proved inadequate, while strain gauge type weighing platforms can estimate payloads to within 2% of true payload when installed, maintained and used correctly. The assessment of the two prototype truck based direct payload measurement systems shows that a high proportion of payloads were estimated to within 5% of the payloads derived from accurate weighing platforms and that these systems appear to have the potential to provide convenient and accurate measurement of payloads. This should enable payloads to be much better controlled than has been possible to date. Predictions of the effect of payloads on production rates and some components of truck haulage costs are possible and some typical results are presented. Accurate prediction of the effect of payloads are not yet possible for some major components of truck haulage costs.

The Goonyella Riverside Mine is located 30 km north of Moranbah in Central Queensland, Australia. Recent mining activities have exposed the north–south striking Kenya and Zimbabwe thrust Faults. These faults vertically offset coal seams by up to 25 m and locally thicken coal packages through imbrication of coal seams. The presence of back-thrusts add to the geotechnical complexity of maintaining highwall stability. The Kenya and Zimbabwe Faults have provided multiple challenges to the mining operation, with an unplanned additional 240 kt of coal tonnes being mined from imbrication of coals seams or from the refinement to local scale geological models. These additional coal tonnes have been either identified during the mining of the coal seam or just prior to overburden removal above the coal seam. These faults can also negatively impacted highwall stability with highwall failures, lowering the overall slope angle for pit designs and increasing stand-off distances for hazardous highwall conditions. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles are used to scan exposed highwalls and enable geological mapping via high-quality 3D images. Measure while drill data from drill and blast rigs can provide local-scale intersections of the faults and coal seams. Mine Geologists utilise these and other data sets to create localised geological models refined position of the fault planes and coal seams. These models are utilised by relevant mine site teams to ensure the safe and efficient mining of coal around these faults.

It is indeed an honour to address the perth branch of the australian institute of mining and metallurgy and to have the opportunity to talk to you about the future role of upgraded ilmenite on t102 feedstock supply and demand. There have been many papers written on upgraded ilmenite supply and demand and now I would like to share with you QIT's view of the situation first, a word about demand, although I will be talking principally on the supply issue. The principal use of t102 is in the manufacture of pigments which, in turn, are used in paints, plastics, and the paper industry together with a few miscellaneous uses, while a further b% or so of t102 minerals are consumed for the manufacture of titanium metal and for the manufacture of welding electrodes. the total demand for contained t102 is of the order-of 3 million tons per annum, and the general consensus in the industry is that growth rates should be of the order of 2% annually- it is against this backdrop that suppliers must compete with one another and produce least cost materials for the pigment industry. At the moment, supplies are relatively tight, but the generally slow growth in demand coupled with the abundance of titanium bearing minerals should ensure that long term the reverse is generally true. Now, let us examine the supply situation. Titanium is the 9th most abundant element in the earth's crust, so the problem from the producers` point of view is not one of scarcity of titanium minerals, but of how to extract most economically t102 feedstocks from a wide variety of choices- up to the present, all titanium feedstocks are being derived from either rutile or ilmenite rutile, at about 95% t102 content, is indeed a premier raw material which does suffer from potential scarcity and rutile supplies will likely be a diminishing factor in future decades- whereas ilmenite, a combination of iron and titanium oxides found in varying ratios, may be found in huge quantities all over the world.
