Most of the world's economically significant volcanogenic massive sulphide (VSM) deposits are considered to have formed in submarine arc and backarc settings. While the Kermadec-Tonga arc is an excellent example of an intra-oceanic arc setting, it remains largely unexplored in terms of submarine mineral resources. More than half of this arc (~1400 km of the >2500-km-long feature) lies within the EEZ of New Zealand, where it is defined by at least one sub-aerial and 33 submarine volcanoes. The NZAPLUME (New Zealand American PLUme Mapping Expedition) cruise of March 1999 provided a systematic assessment ofhydrothermal activity on the southernmost 13 submarine volcanoes along the southern Kermadec arc. Using prospecting techniques based on the physical and chemical detection of hydrothermal plumes, we discovered that more than half (7 of 13) of the southern Kermadec volcanoes host one or more active hydrothermal systems at depths ranging between <200 to 1800 m. Chemical results show that the fluids discharged are compositionally diverse among volcanoes and between sites at a single volcano. Plumes over more than half of the volcanoes are gas-rich (He, CO2, H2S) relative to mid-ocean-ridge (MOR) plumes. In addition, most sites are highly enriched in Fe, yielding Fe/Mn values that far exceed those for MORs. One interpretation consistent with these observations is compositional overprinting by addition of magmatic fluids, which are typically highly enriched in gaseous and ionic components. Regardless of the source, it is clear that the ligands (HS-, Cl-) required to efficiently transport base (e.g. Cu, Zn, Pb) and precious (e.g. Au, Ag) metals to the seafloor are abundant in Kermadec arc fluids. We conclude that modem analogs of VMS deposits are likely forming at multiple sites along the Kermadec arc and within the EEZ of New Zealand.

In February 1995, Falconbridge Limited approved the construction of a nickel mining and milling facility on its Raglan property situated in the Nunavik region of northern Quebec, Canada. The construction period successfully terminated with the commissioning and start-up of the plant and concentrator in early-December 1997. The estimated life of the project is 20 years with an annual mining rate of 800 000 tonnes of ore, producing 21 000 tonnes of nickel per year. This paper discusses the subject of æRemote Mining in the Canadian ArcticÆ as it applies to the Raglan mine process and people. During the feasibility stage of the project, many assumptions were made which influenced the design and operating parameters of the facilities and the equipment. Transportation, communication, remote logistics techniques and standard industry practices required to support a æfly-in/fly-outÆ operation were reviewed and either adopted or rejected for use at Raglan. These assumptions were æmade to fitÆ the uniqueness of our planned operation. It was also acknowledged that many of them would ultimately impact on the people required to staff the operation following construction. Therefore, their suitability and applicability were examined from an economic, operational and human perspective. In a continuing effort to improve the quality of life for Raglan employees, as well as the economics of our mine operations, these assumptions are under constant review and scrutiny. There is no doubt that experiences gained, and willingly shared by other North American arctic mining operations, proved invaluable and are a big reason for RaglanÆs overall success thus far. The mining industry is being challenged technically to develop lower grade orebodies at the lowest possible cost. In addition to environmental constraints, serious social, political and moral questions are being asked and added to this list of challenges. Miners throughout the world must improve their operating standards and public image if we want to attract the best possible employees. Remote mining operations provide a unique opportunity to experiment with various human resource concepts as well as demonstrate the industryÆs commitment to environmental and community concerns.

The Thalanga massive sulphide deposit is hosted by Upper Cambrian rhyolites and volcaniclastics of the Mt. Windsor Volcanics near their contact with overlying dacites, rhyolites and sediments of the Trooper Creek Formation. The ores and host rocks have been subjected to a single strong deformation and to lower to middle greenschist facies metamorphism. A main lens with surface gossan dimensions of 55U m x 6 m dips steeply, plunges shallowly to the west and is offset by a series of normal faults. It is flanked by smaller lenses to the east where the mineralized horizon is stopea out by granite. The area to the east and south of the gossan is masked by Tertiary cover. A complex exhalite package is represented by banded sphalerite-pyrite- galena-chalcopyrite, massive pyrite and chalcopyrite and assemblages dominated by dolomite, chlorite-actinolite, tremolite, talc, barite and rare gypsum. Accessory tetrahedrite, arsenopyrite, bismuthinite, magnetite and native gold are associated locally. Pods of quartz-magnetite formed distally. The ores are underlain by strongly to moderately pyrite-silica-sericite altered rhyolites with the strongest alteration closest to an interred synvolcanic fault. This alteration is characterised by an enrichment in MgO, Na2O, FeS2 and base metals with a depletion in CaO and Na2O. There is a general enrichment in Pb and Zn towards the hanging wall with some enrichment of Cu near the base of the main lens due to replacement by ore tiuias near vent discharge sites. The Crown Minerals Act provides a new+framework for the management of Crown owned minerals and requires that regard be had for the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi. The Act requires the preparation of Minerals Programmes to achieve the Act's objectives of efficient allocation of rights and the recovery of a fair financial return on its minerals. Efficient allocation requires that a permit is allocated to the party which values it most highly. A fair financial return to the Crown must be considered in the context of the economic rent available from individual mineral projects, with the proviso that a nil return to the Crown as the owner of the resource will not be considered a fair return from the community's perspective.

The Mount Isa silver-lead-,zinc deposit possesses a number of features which sets it apart from usual occurrences of ores containing those metals. The deposit has been described in vario:us papers, but development upon deeper levels during the past two years has, yielded much information not hitherto published. Purpose of the present paper is to furnish a unified and coherent perspective by tracing briefly the full rock deformational and mineralization processes responsible for the ore deposition. The paper represents the outcome of ten years' organized geological effort at Mount Isa. Information contained in it supersedes that previously published.A bibliography of published articles relating to Mount Isa ore deposition is appended. In preparing the present paper previously published data have been drawn upon freely wherever applicable. The authors are especially indebted to the papers by Grondijs and Schouten, and by O'Malley and McGhie, which present results of systematic microscope studies of thin and polished sections from comprehensive suites of Mount Isa ore.

With the rapid increase and development of high-speed trains (HSTs), the problems such as train-induced ground vibration and its dynamic effects on nearby structures have become a major environmental concern in urban areas. Ground-born vibrations produced by high-speed trains pose a great challenge for engineers to build structures in such areas that is applicable for residents. In order to study the effect of train-induced ground vibration on nearby buildings, an advanced three-dimensional finite element model for train-induced ground vibrations has been developed using PLAXIS 3D Ultimate. The results of the in situ measurements which was previously carried out by the authors were used to validate the numerical model. The field test for ground vibration due to the passage of a high-speed train was carried out on the Istanbul-Ankara high-speed railway in Turkey with a train speed of 250 km/h. An in-depth analysis was achieved to investigate the effect of different soil properties on the train-induced ground vibrations by using the verified model. According to the result of the vibration analysis, the relative vibration response curves in all directions (x, y, z) for different soil conditions were obtained comparatively. The obtained results of the vibration analysis are discussed in order to figure out some useful conclusions.

The brown coal deposits of the Latrobe Valley are ideal for open cut mining and this method has been used since the start of coal winning in 1894. Operations at the main Yall9urn open cut commenced in 1922, but after a few years the main excavators were replaced by German continuous excavators and subsequent developments of Yallourn and the newer Morwell open cut have been based on this type of plant. The reasons for preferring continuous to intermittent excavators in the Latrobe Valley are indicated in this paper.Under the pressure of post-war conditions, and from their long experience and ability, German engineers have recently made substantial improvements in their continuous excavators and these developments have been enhanced by some American innovations. These changes have extended the economic limits of open cut mining and also serve to emphasize the close inter-relation between the nature of coal and overburden deposits, excavator design and methods of operation.As an aid to descriRing recent excavator developments, this interdependence is demonstrated by means of diagrams which show typical methods of operations, together with examples of actual machines using these methods. The types of excavator dealt with are mainly those in use at, or destined for Yallourn or Morwell open cuts, together with additional types used in U.S.A. and Western Europe. For completeness, and also because they will continue in service at Yallourn and Morwell for some years, rail-mounted dredgers have been included in this paper even though in Europe they are now regarded as obsolescent.Explanations are given of how the intrinsic qualities of Latrobe Valley brown coal and overburden have sometimes prevented overseas plants from operating with the full efficiencies and/or in the methods visualized by the manufacturer, and references are made to the modifications and investigations being undertaken to overcome these problems.A compresensive bibliography is given. Dates shown on illustrations are not commissioning dates of the plant concerned, but the year when photographed.

The new environmental legislation of 1986 was left incomplete and to date remains so. The 'missing' process by which environmental consideration should be applied was never embodied in law and has predisposition to a wide interpretation. The Resource Statutes which govern land use and development place demands on the environmental process without that definition. The Resource Statutes are themselves under review by Government. There is a new Government Department of Conservation. It is still in its early days and facing a challenge to compose its role as a steward over large tracts of land holding significant marketable resources, animal, vegetable, mineral, and abstract. It has also taken over numerous consent and advocacy roles in legislation beyond its own empowering Act. Enter the mining company, anxious if not able to get an easy passage for consents to prospect and mine, then at least to have a clear path to tread to get there, within a fixed time period. Whichever options appear available to process environmental approvals, public participation is that being favoured most by the regulatory bodies. Where a public notification of consent applications is mandatory, public participation should lead to the fastest track available.

The Cadjebut Mine is located 80 km southeast of Fitzroy Crossing. Cadjebut is owned 58 per cent by BHP Minerals and 42 per cent by Billiton Australia. Cadjebut is a 'Mississippi Valley Type' (MVT) deposit. Minerals present are sphalerite, galena and marcasite in a sedimentary host of dolomite and siltstone. The ore contains few deleterious impurities and no silver. The mill was commissioned in the first half of 1988 at a rate of 320 000 tonnes per annum. An expansion in the latter half of 1989 has since increased production to 550 000 tonnes per annum. The initial geological resource at the commencement of mining was 3.8 million tonnes at 13.5 per cent Zn and 4.4 per cent Pb. There is sufficient ore left to sustain operations to 1995 at a grade of 11.2 per cent Zn and 3.9 per cent Pb. The ore from underground is stockpiled on the surface via a drift conveyor and from the stockpile is fed into a grinding circuit consisting of a SAG and ball mill. Cyclone overflow at a Pgp of 90 pm gravitates to the flotation circuit. Lead and zinc are sequentially floated to produce an 80 per cent Pb grade at 90 per cent recovery and a 61 - 62 per cent Zn grade at 96 per cent recovery. The concentrates are thickened and filtered before being trucked to the port of Wyndham 600 km away. From Wyndham the concentrates are shipped to smelters in Asia, Europe and Australia.

Mt Keith concentrator treats low grade disseminated nickel sulfide ore supplied from the adjoining open pit mine. It is a traditional crushing, two-staged closed circuit grinding circuit (SAG & Ball Mills), followed by a complex split-size rougher, scavenger and cleaner flotation circuit. In 2016, 10.5 Mt was milled, at an average head grade of 0.54% Ni, yielding 35 000 nickel metal tonnes in concentrate.Historical analysis of the plant data indicated that of all the nickel lost in the fines rougher circuit tails stream, 25.6% was recoverable in an eight minute laboratory scale flotation test. These results implied that this fine nickel was readily available for recovery in the plant, either through operational improvements or additional flotation capacity. With operation optimisation ongoing, and capital within the business focused elsewhere, plant personnel were challenged to think differently about improving recovery.In 2012, a separate project to improve plant recovery when treating high talc ore was completed. Amongst other vessels, this project saw the installation of two 150 m3 Outotec Cells to the scavenger section of the fines rougher, middlings and scavengers (RMS 1) circuit. Since installation, the operation of these cells resulted in difficulties immediately upstream with instability in the scavenger cells. It was therefore decided that these cells would be better suited to treating the fines rougher circuit tails.The alterations required to divert these flows were minimal, with the capital project totalling $220 000.In the two years since installation, the fines rougher tailings nickel grade has dropped by 9.9%. The scavenger circuit has also seen a 2.8% reduction in tailings nickel grade, and instability issues were immediately resolved. This project serves as a lesson in how existing plant infrastructure may be better utilised to maximise recovery. Although this is especially applicable when capital constrained, such re-appropriation can be considered at any point to maximise return on existing assets. CITATION:Hussey, L, 2017. Several nuclear techniques have been assessed for application to online conveyor belt analysis of oil yield from Rundle oil shale. The most favourable technique is neutron inelastic scattering which determines the total carbon content of bulk shale samples. Correlations of chemical laboratory assays for 540 Rundle oil shale samples show that oil yield can be predicted from total carbon to within 11 litre/tonne.Laboratory experimental work on 17 bulk samples of Rundle oil shale indicated that carbon and oil yield can be determined to within 0.6 wt per cent and 9 litre/tonne, respectively, using the neutron inelastic scatter technique. A practical neutron inelastic scatter gauge for application on a 23 mm thick reinforced conveyor belt could consist of a 5 curie 241 Am-Be neutron source and a 150 mm diameter x 100 mm thick Nal(TI) detector. With this gauge, the analysis time to achieve a counting statistical error of 6 litre/tonne should be about five minutes.

Mineral maps of æintactÆ and large particle textures have been produced routinely from optical microscope images. Polished thin sections of large particles (1 - 3 mm) provide a balance between representative sampling and the preservation of primary rock textures. Optical microscopy is an efficient way to generate mineral maps suitable for geometallurgical applications. The automated optical mineral identification was carried out using a Leica DM6000¬ microscope with a high precision stage suitable for direct tiling of image frames and good registration of multiple image layers. Standard images collected were 10 x 10 frames (20 mm x 16 mm). Four image layers were recorded: ætransmitted light plane polarisedÆ, ætransmitted light crossed polarsÆ, ætransmitted light crossed polars with 1l tint plateÆ and æreflected lightÆ. All image analysis was carried out using Definiens Professional V5¬. The four image bands were read directly in 12 greyscale bands. A segmentation algorithm produced objects based on homogeneity across all bands. These objects were then classified using a complex set of rules (Process Tree) that are based on image brightness in all 12 bands. Opaque and non-opaque minerals were classified in the same sample. Using this protocol up to 12 minerals can be satisfactorily classified in one sample. The opaque minerals were recognised using colour ratio and reflectance intensity in the reflected light image. Non-opaque minerals are more difficult because of the complex variable colours of many minerals and the complexity of interference colours. However, object-oriented classification using three transmitted light image layers and multiple rules is a powerful technique for recognition of these minerals.

The Newmont Boddington Gold (NBG) processing plant was designed for 35Mt/y with ball mills expected to deliver a combined new mill feed rate of 4837 tonnes/hr. Since beginning commercial production in late 2009, the plant has steadily increased throughput to meet design capacity in 2014 and reached 37 Mt/y in 2015. Through improved efficiencies, changes to the milling circuit have taken place since commissioning to take the plant beyond its design to an actual throughput of 39.0 Mt in 2017 and a budgeted throughput of 39.4 Mt/y this year.The NBG milling circuit has four parallel ball mills, each consisting of a 7.9 x 13.4 m ball mill with twin 7.5 MW fixed speed motors in closed circuit with twelve 650 mm cyclones. Each mill is fed by two wet screens with the undersize gravitating to a mill discharge hopper where it is combined with the ball mill discharge and pumped to hydrocyclones for classification. The cyclone underflow is re-ground to a target P80 of 150 µm.This paper will focus on process improvements made to the NBG milling circuit which include cyclone reconfiguration, fine screen panel redesign, implementation of an expert control system, mill power draw increase and grinding media changes to take NBG beyond its design throughput.CITATION:McCamley, C, Petrucci, P and Blay, K, 2018. The Worthing Mine near Hallett Cove. 20 km southwest of the cite of Adelaide, belongs to Aus- tralia's first mining era, which took place in South Australia between 1841 and 1851 (Figure 1). Oper- ations began in 1849 only six years after the com- mencement of metal mining in Australia at Glen Osmond. Although not as historically significant as Glen Osmond (1841), or the much larger copper mines of Kapunda (1844) or Burra (1845) its importance lies with its Cornish enginehouse and chimney. The Worthing enginehouse, built in 1851-1852 is the oldest remaining in Australia and certainly the most significant relic of Australia's first mining era. Six other stone enginehouses were built during that period: at Kapunda in 1848 and 1850: at Burra in 1849, 1850 and 1851; and at Tungkillo in 1849. All of these houses have long since dis- appeared although the foundations of one (Kapunda, 1850) still remain. The significance of the Worthing site is enhanced by its magnificant environmental setting in the bare, steep valley of Field River. Currently (1986) the Worthing Mine is the only site within the City of Marion which is on the Register of State Heritage Items. The site is also included in the Classified List of the National Trust of South Australia and on the Register of the National Estate.

The McArthur lead-zinc-silver deposit is of the stratiform type. It consists of a mineralized bituminous shale sequence containing some tuffites, numerous graded beds and isolated slump breccia horizons. The principal sulphides; pyrite, sphalerite and galena, are essentially restricted to the shales and the genetically unrelated turbidites contain only minor mineralization. The geochemistry of the deposit has been investigated with respect to the stratigraphio column and mineralogy of the sediments.

Attritioning has been a method of improving mineral extraction for over 60 years, however it is only recently that an understanding of the mechanism employed and the improvement in efficiency that have been achieved.The paper will discuss these improvements and how to overcome the problems that have been raised. The Big Wainihinihi River and tunnel are located on the western side of the Southern Alps of New Zealand within the active Alpine Fault zone, which marks the boundary between the Pacific and Australian Tectonic Plates. The tunnel was built over 100 years ago to supply water for gold mining, but it now conveys water from a high-energy intake to a canal that supplies three of TrustPower’s hydro-electric power stations with a combined installed generating capacity of 10 MW. Part of the tunnel passes through an unstable 50° schist slope, which fi rst suffered a wedge failure in the 1929 Arthur’s Pass Earthquake and was reinstated in the mid-1970s for hydro generation. In 2008, TrustPower’s monitoring system showed that the wedge failure had remobilised and that urgent remediation was required.Harker Underground Construction (Harker) was awarded a design-build contract to restore the tunnel to service by tunnelling a new central section. Their geotechnical engineers, Peters and Cheung, reviewed the tunnel’s stability and proposed a new, safer tunnel alignment, deep behind the failure wedges. This work was based on their failure model, cost-benefit studies, and engineering geology completion mapping at the time of re-opening.Construction innovation was an important factor in ensuring the project’s success, as were detailed geological and geotechnical information, a robust methodology, strong client relationship and planning. To suit the varying rock conditions and restricted space, Harker combined a traditional drill-and-blast method with light-weight modular steel sets and timber supports to reduce construction costs and mitigate support risk. To make material handing easier in the tight conditions, a special electric locomotive was designed and built and blasting confi gurations were adapted to suit varying rock conditions in the highly fractured schist.The isolated site meant interesting and unexpected challenges, particularly communications and resources (both human and material). Despite that, the project was completed within budget, on schedule, and with no lost-time injuries.

The offshore Maui gas/condensate field was discovered by Shell BP and Todd on Services Limited in 1969. Subsequent appraisal drilling and negotiations with the Government led to a development agreement, æThe Maui White Paper' being concluded in 1973. Part of this agreement provided for the Government to take a 50 per cent shareholding in the field. The field is comprised of a double domed anticlinal structure containing two gas reservoirs at depths ranging from 2700 - 3000 m. Water depth is 110 m. The development plan called for two standalone steel platforms to be installed sequentially over a period of some years depending on gas demand. The first platform (MPA) was put in place in 1976 but difficulties were experienced with piling and drilling of the 12 (later increased to 14) wells did not start until 1978. First gas was piped ashore late in 1979.

PART 1The quantity of dust present and the methods used for suppression of dust in metalliferous mines has, in recent years, received considerable attention from mining engmeers in various parts of the world. Shortly after the publication of the General Report of the Miners' Phthisis Prevention Committee, South Africa, in 1916, the officers of the Broken Hill South Limited started investigations into the conditions of the dustiness of the air in the underground workings. As the methods used are not generally known in Australia, the writers are of the opinion that the present is an opportune time to place them before members of the Institute. A large amount of the subject matter of this paper has been drawn from the 1916 and 1919 reports of the Miners' Phthisis Prevention Committee, South Africa, the paper of Mr. Innes published in "The Chemical, Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Mrica"; also various articles appearing in the Journal of Industrial Hygiene, and the American Journal of Public Health. A great deal of research work into the cause, prevention and estimation of mine dust has been made by the Miners' Phthisis Prevention Committee of South Africa, and officials of the United States Bureau of Mines. The writers considered it advisable to begin the investigation at the South Mine with apparatus and methods developed by the South African Committee.Through the Australian agent of the Cape Explosives Company, inquiries were made preliminary to procuring the necessary apparatus for the determination of dust, from South Africa. The writers then learned that the older gravimetric method used by the Phthisis Prevention Committee was likely to be superseded by the konimeter...

In the retreatment of an old tailing dump containing five per cent of lead principally as lead sulphate, the lead sulphate was floated with liquid Aerofloat reagent after sulphidising with phosphorous pentasulphide in an acid circuit. A zinc middling product was removed by flotation before recovering the lead. Concentrate products were sundried in surface dams.INTRODUCTIONDuring the period between 1917 and 1928 the Junction North Broken Hill Mine N.L. deposited several tailing dumps on its leases, which were acquired by North Broken Hill Ltd.in 1931. One of these dumps lay alongside a main road close to a residential area. The high metal prices prevailing in the post-war years (1945 onwards) provided a strong incentive for retreating this dump and transferring it to a less objectionable site.SAMPLING AND TESTINGIn 1946 a sampling and testing campaign was instituted which culminated in 1949 in a decision being made to erect a tailing retreatment plant adjacent to the dump.The dump was sampled with a 3 in. post hole auger using extension lengths of -! in. pipe for drilling to 30 ft. The dump material was fine and moist and core recovery was excellent. Hole depths ranged from 14 ft. to 30 ft., with an average dump depth of 20 ft.Individual samples were prepared from successive 9 ft.lengths of core and each sample thus obtained was, submitted for sizing and assay.The sampling showed that the dump contained approximately 380,000 tons of fine tailing assaying:
