The problem of unsteady-state gas flow through porous media leads to a second-order non-linear partial differential equation for which no analytical solution has been found. In this paper a stable numerical procedure is developed for solving the equation for production of gas at constant rate from linear and radial systems. An electronic digital computer is used to perform the numerical integration using an implicit form of an approximating difference equation. Solutions are presented in graphical form for various values of dimension-less parameters. The solutions are compared with the laboratory study of gas depletion in a linear system. INTRODUCTION Production of fluids from porous rock reservoirs is essentially a transient process. Transient gradients develop as soon as production begins, and further withdrawals continue to cause disturbances which propagate throughout the reservoir, each adding in some way to the prior ones. A correct mathematical analysis of this behavior is complicated by the fact that the transient or unsteady-state flow of compressible fluids must be described by difficult second-order partial differential equations. As a practical matter, three distinctly different cases arise: 1. Flow of single-phase liquid 2. Flow of gases 3. Multiphase flow The first of these has been found to give a linear second-order equation similar to the well-known heat flow equation. where 7 is fluid density, 8 is time, and a a constant for the system, provided d 7 = r cdp, where the compressibility, c, is constant over the range of pressure, p, considered. Solutions of Equation (1) for both linear and radial flow are available in several forms.2'3' On the other hand. the second case, which is the flow of gas, gives a non-linear second-order equation, the solution of which is not known. Although a number of approximate solutions have been proposed, each is limited in value by the associated simplifying assumptions. Inasmuch as the analysis of transient flow is limited to liquid systems, a solution of the second case is necessary if further progress is to be made in studying underground fluid movement. For this reason a solution of Equation (2) was undertaken by means of numerical integration of approximating difference equations. BASIC DIFFERENTIAL EQUATION Equation (2; is derived by combining the equation of continuity, the perfect gas law, and Darcy's law to give the basic differential equation Strictly speaking, the fluids present in a gas reservoir are not perfect gases. Furthermore, there are indications that over certain velocity ranges, Darcy's law is not applicable. It would not be practicable. however, to attempt to obtain numerical solutions which would take into account all the possible variations from these laws which could occur in actual systems. The

The terms asphalt and bitumen have been applied interchangeably, although incorrectly on occasion, for centuries to various bituminous materials that were found in nature. Native bituminous materials of only the solid types, deposits of which are found on or near the surface of the ground, together with the principal asphaltic type petroleum bitumens will be considered in this chapter. The international dictionary compiled by the "Permanent International Association of Road Congresses" still gives the full name as "Asphaltic Bitumen" but of recent years the word "Bitumen" has been recognized as most appropriate and is defined by the American Society for Testing Materials as follows: "Mixtures of hydrocarbons of natural or pyrogenous origin, or combinations of both, frequently accompanied by their nonmetallic derivatives, which may be gaseous, liquid, semisolid or solid and which are completely soluble in carbon disulfide." Asphaltic pyrobitumens, as defined by Abraham,2 is a species of pyrobitumen, including dark-colored, comparatively hard and nonvolatile solids; composed of hydrocarbons, substantially free from oxygenated bodies; sometimes associated with mineral matter, the nonmineral constituents being infusible and largely insoluble in carbon disulfide. Deposits of native bituminous materials are found scattered over the entire world, but many are relatively unimportant as far as commerce is concerned. No attempt has been made to cover all of the known deposits. The principal bituminous materials of commercial interest are: 1. Native asphalts, solid or semisolid, associated with mineral matter such as Trinidad Lake asphalt, Rock asphalt and Selenitza, Boeton and Iraq asphalts. 2. Native Asphaltites, such as gilsonite, grahamite and glance pitch, conspicuous by their hardness, brittleness and comparatively high softening point. 3. Asphaltic bitumens obtained from nonasphaltic, semi-asphaltic and asphaltic crude petroleum by distillation, blowing with air and the cracking of residual oils. 4. Asphaltic pyrobitumens of which wurtzilite and elaterite are of chief interest industrially as they depolymerize upon heating, becoming fusible and soluble in contrast to their original properties in these respects.2 5. Mineral waxes, such as ozokerite, characterized by their high crystallizable paraffine content. Native Lake Asphalt At Brighton situated in the southwestern part of the Island of Trinidad is one of the largest deposits of native asphalt in the world.3 The lake is oval in shape, covering an area of 114 acres and having a depth of 285 ft at its center. The material forming this deposit is an emulsion of water and bitumen with a suspension of mineral matter consisting of impalpably fine clay dispersed by nature in the asphalt, and small quantities of silica and vegetable matter. In recent years considerable work has been undertaken in order to gain an understanding of the mechanisms responsible for the generation of recrystal- lization textures in face-centered-cubic metals. Two theories have been proposed, that of oriented growth1 and that of oriented nucleation,' and several attempts have been made to check these theories directly by recrystallizing deformed single crystals.3-5 Two groups, Graham-Cahn and Liebmann-Liicke-Masing, studied the orientation of recrystallized grains and their rate of growth, both using strained aluminum single crystals of commercial purity (Graham et al., 99.6 pct, Liebmann et al., 99.8 pct). OUR mineral-land laws need revising so as to provide definite title at the outset to the mineral deposits within any definite piece of land. The laws as they now stand, especially those applicable to lodes, breed uncertainty as to rights of possession prior to patent; and to my mind this is the worst feature of all, worse even than the apex bugbear. It is now almost impossible for anybody to tell-with certainty what mineral rights exist within any area that is not covered by patent, or whether any valid rights exist at all. Our system is unique in permitting individuals to appropriate and exploit mineral lands of the public domain without notice of any kind to the Federal government, and to relinquish them without any ceremony at all. The result is a clouded record that cannot be cleared up until each claimant is put to some sort of final proof. In order to accomplish this, new Federal legislation will be required. The requirements for a mineral survey and the proceedings for patent have always been cumbersome and expensive; and perhaps out of regard for the poor claim owner, who can ill afford the outlay for that sort of thing, the law does not require him to go. through it unless he chooses to do so. Consequently, every active mining district has become encumbered with tangled groups of doubtful or conflicting locations, whose rights and boundaries, when any valuable ore is found, must usually be determined by lawsuits that are as expensive and as distressing as the stakes are high. So deeply has litigation entered into our mining system that a claim whose rights have never been disputed would probably be set down offhand, by $miner of the old school, as of no value. Think of the litigation over rights of possession on the Com-stock lode—12 leading companies involved 'in an aggregate of 245 suits within a period of less than eight years! Ambiguous local records; the chance of erroneously placed or obliterated monuments; doubt as to the sufficient performance of the statutory annual labor; uncertainty as to prior conflicting or overlapping locations; anxiety as to the changing attitude of the Department of the Interior and the Forest Service—such considerations as these make an unpatented mining claim an unclean thing in the eyes of possible investors. Recently the S-curves for 30 to 40 alloy steels have been pub1ished.l.2 These steels show individual characteristics, which make each additional S-curve of great interest. There are important differences in the mechanism of the transformation process, the type of transformation product, and the influence of alloying elements. Steels of the same general alloy composition may possess such variable characteristics with regard to the length of time of isothermal transformation that an S-curve for each heat of steel may be desirable. In the present work the isothermal transformation of a steel having the following composition and grain size was studied: 0.29 per cent carbon; 0.21 manganese; 0.026 phosphorus; 0.017 sulphur; 0.056 silicon; 1.45 chromium; 3.25 nickel; austenite grain size, 7. The progress of the isothermal transformation was followed by several different methods, including hardness measurements, dilatometer observations, and examinations of the microstructure. It was not expected that these methods would be in precise agreement.3 Accordingly, the changes in microstructure and hardness were given additional weight in determining the initial stage of transformation and the dilatometer measurements were relied on in estimating the completion of the process. The beginning of transformation was indicated by I per cent of transformation products and the end of transformation by about 99 per cent. The reproducibility of the various methods in the ranges of highest sensitivity was checked by several observations at each time and temperature. The steel used in this investigation was annealed for 24 hr, at 925°C. Macroetching revealed no serious segregation. The specimens for the metallographic and hardness investigations were 1¼ by ½ by ? in. Wires attached to the samples were used for handling. instead of tongs, to avoid chilling. The specimens were heated at 845°C. for ½ hr. and quenched into constant-temperature salt baths held at various temperatures from 205' to 650°C. The time required to transfer the specimens was found to be about 1½ sec., and nearly 5 sec. more was required for them to come to the temperature of the bath. After various lengths of time in the constant-temperature baths the specimens were quenched in water at 2I°C. The specimens were cut in half for the metallographic examination, to provide a surface free from decarburization. To determine the beginning and end of the transformation the percentage of transformation determined metallographically and by hardness was plotted against time. A planimeter was used in the metallographic determination. The hardness and metallographic determinations made at room temperature were confirmed reasonably well by dilatometer measurements taken during the process of transformation at the various temperatures. If some solution-quenched supersaturated aluminum solid solutions, e.g.., Al(Cu), are plastically deformed at room temperature and then aged at 200oC, the hardness may first decrease before increasing in the usual manner ' A similar transient softening is observed, even in the absence of plastic deformation, when a thin foil or small-diameter wire Al(Cu) specimen is rapidly quenched from the solution-treatment temperature and then aged.' Also, some solution-quenched and neutron-irradiated alloys undergo an initial hardness decrease during subsequent aging.3 The usual explanation of the transient softening in the above examples involves the effect of vacancies introduced by plastic deformation, rapid quenching, and neutron irradiation, respectively However, the mechanism of softening is not unequivo-cably established. In the first-noted case, Gane and parkins' observed that the softening was approximately proportional to the difference in the atomic diameters of solute and solvent, and it was argued that, if a large relative difference in atomic diameter promoted vacancy-assisted room-temperature solute diffusion to dislocations, dislocation climb occurring during subsequent aging at 200°C could cause transient softening. Some substantiation of this theory was offered by the additional observation that discontinuous yielding of solution-quenched polycrystalline Al(Cu) tensile specimens was suppressed by interrupting the test for a short aging treatment at 200°C. Of course, reversion (resolution of GPI) at 200°C would also cause softening, and Sil-cock4 expressed the opinion that the softening in the case of Al(Cu) must be partly associated with reversion. Also, Hirsch5 commented on the possibility that, if jogs cause hardening, an anneal at 200°C should straighten the jogged dislocations and result in softening. However, parkins' has re-expressed his belief that these mechanisms are not entirely consistent with the observed serrated stress-strain curves. Experimental. New data has now been obtained for Al(Cu), Al(Ge), Al(Mg), and Al(Zn) primary solid-solution alloys. These alloys were prepared from metals exceeding 99.99 pct purity, and specimens 4 by 4 in. diam were solution-treated, quenched, deformed 10 pct in compression at room temperature, and aged at 200'C in a cottonseed oil bath for various times. Generally, these operations could not be carried out in rapid succession, so the alloys were stored in a freezer between treatments to minimize aging. The variation in hardness with aging time, Figs. 1 to 4, was determined by microhardness testing with a 3.0-kg load. At least five readings were averaged to obtain each data point, and all measurements were taken about the center circumference of each cylinder (region of maximum deformation). IN contemplating the prospects of natural gas being transported from the fields where it is produced to such distant points as Philadelphia, New Jersey, New York City, and New England, let us review the advance that natural gas has made and the projects currently scheduled for construction. This may give us a perspective of the point in the long-range development of the natural gas business in which we now find ourselves, and some basis for judging the further expansion of the industry. Authentic statistics of the total marketed production of natural gas in the United States have been compiled by the Bureau of Mines since the year 1906. The growth of the business is indicated by the following data on marketed production for each ten-year interval since 1906:

Longwall coal mining is a growing mining technique in the United States. However, very little premining exploration data are collected presently by coal companies to 1) select coal winning equipment, 2) select and design face supports and supports in gate and tail entries, or 3) optimize operational parameters such as length, width, and orientation of face. The authors are of the opinion that much of the data needed for mine planning and design for longwall mining can be obtained during exploration. In this paper, the authors identify the data requirements, discuss how these data can be obtained during exploration, propose an exploration program and estimate the cost to obtain the necessary data.

Some ten years ago the writer1 made a survey of college catalogues to determine what sort of training geologists were receiving in basic sciences. In the light of this compilation and subsequent experience, he made the statement at the 1939 meeting of the Institute that apparently only in schools offering a curriculum in geological engineering or in the geological option of mining engineering curricula could geologists hope to receive the training advocated by Hubbeet.2 In the former study, schools of engineering were excluded because the preparation was known beforehand. The present study aims to consider engineering schools in an effort to determine not only what basic studies are required but what use is made of them in geological courses of the third and fourth years. The present study combined the method of consulting catalogues with a questionnaire. Letters were mailed to officials responsible for supervision of mineral industries curricula requesting information On' (I) the extent to which the engineering preparation of the first two years is actually used in the work of the last two; (2) the extent to which the engineering of the last two years is used in courses in geological engineering or geology; and (3) whether geologists or geological engineers teach descriptively or analytically. Both methods of securing information are open to criticism; the former on the basis of the incomplete information supplied by university catalogues concerning prerequisites and curricula and the latter on the ground that the questions may be phrased poorly or given insufficient consideration by replying officials. Fifty-six questionnaires were mailed and 39 (70 per cent) replies were received. Of the replies, 6 (11.3 per cent) were from colleges of liberal arts unconnected with engineering schools, 11 (20 per cent) were from schools having curricula in geological engineering and 22 (39 per cent) were from departments of mining engineering. The number of replies and their distribution were satisfactory in spite of the receipt of only six from liberal arts colleges. It should be understood that the universities of which the catalogues were examined were not necessarily the same in both compilations. No departments that are admittedly or known to be acting solely as service departments were recorded in the second study. Table I shows that all professional schools require mathematics through calculus, whereas only 7 per cent of the liberal arts curricula expect the same level of preparation; only 73 per cent require trigonometry and 40 per cent college "algebra. The proportion of geological engineering curricula requiring differential equations is higher than mining. All of the engineering schools require general and analytical chemistry, whereas only 77 per cent of liberal arts curricula require general and 18 per cent analytical. In 1930, Taggart, Taylor and Knoll1 found that addition of various electrolytes to suspensions of ground minerals resulted in the stopping or starting of Brownian movement of the suspended particles. On the basis of the many new facts found, they rejected the " classical"† theory of Brownian movement and proposed an "ioniza-tion " theory. This new theory was further supported in later publications by Taggart.3,4 The acceptance of the ionization theory by men in the field of flotation may be judged by the mention given this theory in Gaudin's "Principles of Mineral Dressing,'16 Wark's "Principles of Flotation,"8 as well as in a recent paper by Fitt, Thomas and Taggart.7 The proponents of the ionization theory have gone further than the mere statement of the new theory. A parallelism between the Brownian movement of mineral particles and their behavior in flotation was reported.1,3,4 Likewise, the correlation between flocculation-dispersion of mineral particles and the Brownian movement of these particles has been investigated.' Bankoffl5 has suggested that "slime-coating" can also be directly correlated with the Brownian movement of the slime particles. In each of the instances mentioned it is the ionization theory of Brownian movement that has been used to "explain" the correlations that were found. The essential conflict between the kinetic theory and the ionization theory can be understood best by a brief description of each. The kinetic theory* proposes that Brownian movement is caused by the impacts of liquid molecules against the solid particles. At any instant of time, the molecular impacts on all sides of the solid particle will not balance, and the particle will receive a push in some direction. According to this theory, dl particles suspended in a liquid are in Brownian movement. However, if the particle is very large, the impacts on all sides will very nearly balance and the motion will not be noticeable. Another factor, besides the size of the particle, that affects the magnitude of the Brownian movement is the viscosity of the liquid—the greater the viscosity, the less the displacement of particles by Brownian movement. This theory has been verified experimentally by measurement of the velocity of Brownian movement, and by measurement of the compacting of suspensoid particles under the influence of gravity.2 The originators of the ionization theory found that he addition of various electrolytes to slime pulps caused cessation or commencement of Brownian movement, depending upon the chemical nature of the particle and the electrolyte. A parallelism between the Brownian movement of mineral particles and their behavior in flotation was reported.1,3,4 Likewise, the correlation between flocculation-dispersion of mineral particles and the Brownian movement of these particles has been investigated.' Bankoffl5 has suggested that "slime-coating" can also be directly correlated with the Brownian movement of the slime particles. In each of the instances mentioned it is the ionization theory of Brownian movement that has been used to "explain" the correlations that were found. The essential conflict between the kinetic theory and the ionization theory can be understood best by a brief description of each. The kinetic theory* proposes that Brownian movement is caused by the impacts of liquid molecules against the solid particles. At any instant of time, the molecular impacts on all sides of the solid particle will not balance, and the particle will receive a push in some direction. According to this theory, dl particles suspended in a liquid are in Brownian movement. However, if the particle is very large, the impacts on all sides will very nearly balance and the motion will not be noticeable. Another factor, besides the size of the particle, that affects the magnitude of the Brownian movement is the viscosity of the liquid—the greater the viscosity, the less the displacement of particles by Brownian movement. This theory has been verified experimentally by measurement of the velocity of Brownian movement, and by measurement of the compacting of suspensoid particles under the influence of gravity.2 The originators of the ionization theory found that he addition of various electrolytes to slime pulps caused cessation or commencement of Brownian movement, depending upon the chemical nature of the particle and the electrolyte. The slate industry of the United States has shown a marked decline in value of products made annually since the peak year 1925, although there has been moderate improvement over the lean years 1932 to 1934. In 1940, the value of all slate products sold was approximately 5¾ million dollars for a total output of 473,450 short tons. The quantity sold was a little less and the value a great deal lower than the annual averages for the past two decades. Enormous quantities of waste materials result from the quarrying, splitting and milling of slate. Obviously, utilization of such waste material is desirable, not only from the viewpoint of economical operation but also for the purpose of conserving natural resources. One possible use is to produce expanded or puffed lightweight aggregate for use in concretes. Such concretes are strong enough for specific uses, and the advantage of lightness could be obtained in such structures as the walls and roofs of buildings, suspension-bridge roadways and various other applications where weight is a factor. Conceivably, these uses could consume an appreciable annual tonnage. Use of Waste Slates for Making Aggregates The lightweight-aggregate industry has been discussed elsewhere4,5 and need not be covered in detail in this paper. The materials commonly utilized are naturally occurring aggregates such as volcanic cinder, tuff and pumice; by-product materials, such as ordinary cinders and air-cooled slags; and the specially manufactured products, including Haydite, Pottsco, Gravelite, Cel-seal, Superock and Waylite. Slates, however, have not been given the consideration they merit, especially in the United States. In the British Isles, some work has been done3 on certain Welsh slates by the Building Research Station to stimulate the use of these wastes. Requirements for Raw Materials As pointed out by Hughes,4 the lightweight-aggregate industry is segregated in regions adjacent to large cities in order to localize the market and avoid the necessity of long freight haulage. Waste slate from the deposits of eastern Pennsylvania, northern Maryland, and Virginia would meet the basic requirement of ally low-priced structural raw material. One apparent advantage is attained when slate waste, normally discarded, is utilized in the manufacture of a by-product. Mining or quarrying costs usually have been assessed against the main product. Some additional grinding might be desirable, but this operation would be relatively cheap, as most slates grind easily. It is believed that virtually all slates, when properly heated, will expand to some degree. However, types that will expand from 3 to 7 times their original volume are preferred. The Evergreen mine, located at Apex, in the northern part of Gilpin county, Colorado, has opened a very peculiar and interesting copper-deposit, in which both bornite and chalcopyrite occur as rock-minerals. The country-rocks are crystalline schists cut by dikes of granu-lite and of pegmatite. At the Evergreen property they have been cut by a dike of a uew kind of eruptive rock, to which I have given the name " Evergreenite." The rock is composed of quartz, alkali feldspars, orthoclase and albite (often interlocked as microperthite), with augite of the ægirine variety and long needles of enstatite and diallage. For reasons stated below, I believe the dike to be of Tertiary age. It is easily traced on the surface of the ground, from a point in the bottom of Pine creek, about a mile below Apex, to the top of Nevada hill, 1,500 ft. beyond and 600 ft. above it. (See Fig. 1.) It varies from 3 to 12 ft. in width, and is bounded on both sides by contact-zones about 60 ft. wide, in which the crystalline schists have been changed into pseudo-quartzites or pseudo-gneisees, according to the injection of an excess of quartz or of feldspars through the special layer of the schists. The most interesting feature is the presence of the pyroxenes, which are always found, though in very variable proportions from place to place, in the layers of these metamorphosed crystalline schists. The dike has torn from its walls a large number of fragments of the wall-rock. It must have been in a viscous state when that happened, because these fragments of the wall-rock do not show any sign of resorption or of assimilation by the magma. In places they are so distinct and so numerous that the rock looks to the naked eye like a pseudo-breccia, of which, never-

It has been shown by Walton and Chalmers,&apos; that the mechanism of the development of solidification textures in castings involves the preferential growth of dendrites along certain crystallographic directions as determined by the influence of prevailing heat-transfer conditions. Specifically, this growth is parallel to the direction of heat flow. The purpose of the present investigation was to determine the applicability of this mechanism to: 1) commercially pure aluminum (99.75 pct) solidified to coarse columnar crystals, 2) an aluminum-silicon casting alloy (5.25 Si, 0.38 Fe, 0.02 Cu, 0.10 Ti, 0.002 S) cast to a fine-grained structure under complex and reproducible heat transfer conditions. PROCEDURE AND RESULTS 1) Specimen Preparation—Using a technique similar to that employed by Northcott and Thomas,2 samples were melted in the directional solidification mold, Fig. 1, by heating the entire assembly to 670° C. The mold was then end cooled using a water jet. From considerations of harmonic analysis, the likely distribution of isotherm normals encountered by the growing crystals is shown in Fig. 1. 2) Orientation Analysis—The pure aluminum sample froze to large columnar crystals, nucleated close to the metal diaphragm, with the growth direction parallel to the mold axis. Using the back-reflection Laue technique, the growth direction of these crystals was determined to be a <100>, which coincided within 53 deg to the mold axis. Metallographic examination of the relatively fine-grained aluminum-silicon sample revealed a dendritic mode of growth having its primary dendrite arms along isotherm normals. Back-reflection Debye-Scherrer patterns, taken with the specimen rotating about its cylinder axis, yielded rings displaying symmetrical arcing, thus proving that the sample did, indeed, possess the solidification texture inferred from the preliminary metallographic examination. To determine the extent and orientation of the texture in the aluminum-silicon alloy, a density distribution of the (111) poles of the sample was plotted using the transmission Debge-Scherrer

The mining industry is faced with a pressing problem; that is, to develop more efficient methods of extraction, handling and upgrading-techniques that will do the job faster and better than ever before. New techniques require new machines, or applications of new and improved materials that can be used to modify and improve existing machine and equipment designs. The traditional approach has been to increase productivity by increasing equipment size. Prognostication indicates that the trend toward larger equipment sizes and capacities will continue as one answer to the challenge imposed by future increases in mineral demands. But what is the limit on the continued growth of equipment size? Until about 1930, there was a very definite limit-a limit imposed by the strength of the steels and the power plants then available. The equipment engineer had come to an impasse: even though it was easily possible, for instance, to triple the size of a bucket, it had become impractical to correspondingly enlarge the boom, the counterweight, and the power plant.
