Stress-strain data are reported for sodium chloride, lithium fluoride, and magnesium oxide tested in compression at diffevent strain rates in the telrlperature range from 70° to 873°K. Quantitative equations are given for the stvain-rate dependence of the critical resolved shear stress and the initial rate of work havdening. The properties so determined are compared with results previously reported for metals. ALTHOUGH the effects of strain rate and temperature on the stress-strain characteristics of metals have been extensively investigated1,2 these effects have not been studied in detail in ionic crystals. In the only previous investigations on the effect of strain rate on the deformation of ionic crystals. Gilman and gohnston3 and Hulse and pask4 have shown that the yield stress of lithium fluoride and magnesium oxide at room temperature is proportional to the ninth or tenth root of the strain rate. CRYSTAL PREPARATION Lithium fluoride, sodium chloride. and magnesium oxide single crystals were purchased from the Har-shaw Chemical Co. The compression fixture and sample preparation have been described in detail previously.5 The detectable impurities in MgO were eight parts in 105 of Fe and six parts in 105 of Si; in LiF, six parts in 105 of Mg; and in NaC1, two parts in 105 of Fe and four parts in 10&apos; of Mg. The cleaved samples measured - 0.1 in. by 0.1 in. by 0.3 in. Prior to testing all samples were annealed at -0.8 of their melting point and cooled to room tempera- ture at 50 C per hr.&apos; Samples were strained at rates (<) of 0.1, 0.01, 0.002, and 0.0002 in. per in. per min. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Fig. 1 is a plot of the critical resolved shear stress a,. (extrapolation of slope of easy glide region to zero strain) of sodium chloride, lithium fluoride, and magnesium oxide tested at different strain rates as a function of temperature. In all crystals at all strain rates a, decreases with increasing temperature according to an equation of the type397 where uo is a stress constant, K is a constant, and T is the absolute temperature. The points in Fig. 1 are the average of six tests. It is evident that there is a break in the log 0,- temperature plots at a characteristic temperature T,. The constant K of Eq. THE writer has been interested in determining the mineralogic dis-tribution of silver in the base-metal ore of the Ground Hog mine of the Asarco Mining Co. in the Central mining district of New Mexico.1 This ore consists of a varitextured mixture of sphalerite, chalcopyrite, galena and pyrite in a quartz gangue. The average ore contains 14 per, cent of zinc, 9.5 per cent of lead, 5 per cent of copper, and 10 oz. of silver per ton. Generally it is accepted that the silver in ores of this type, in which no definite silver minerals can be recognized, is contained in the base-metal minerals. Published assays of pure mineral specimens from many dis-tricts show that each of the base-metal minerals contributes in some degree to the total silver content of the ores, and to determine the pro-portionate amount contributed by each mineral in any specific ore it has been the practice to assay selected specimens of each mineral, the purity of which has been determined microscopically. There being no such assays available for the Ground Hog ore, and it being impract cable to have enough of them made to give average results, the writer resorted to a mathematical attack upon composite assays of large quantities of ore and concentrates. Surprising results were obtained, and it is the threefold purpose of this paper to present these results, to describe the mathe-matical method used, and to point out the value of using this method even when assays of pure specimens are available.

Interfacing new or improved unit operations SUBMODULES with the EXECUTIVE of a macro analysis simulator usually requires modification of the input data. For example, particle processing SUBMODULES that are sufficiently general in nature to provide useful predictions require input data for rather narrow size fractions. Such data is not always available for the EXECUTIVE and must therefore be generated by the SUBMODULE. A successful interface to allow incorporation of a new SUBMODULE for comminution and one for classification in a general stream state flowsheet simulator is presented. The general nature of the SUBMODULES, as well as the logic of expanding and contracting the required data input is discussed.

Strictly speaking, manganese should not&apos; be classed as &apos;a rare metal, since there is 800 times as much manganese in the earth&apos;s crust as there is zinc or lead. But manganese&apos; as a metal is rare, just as titanium metal is rare though titanium is five times as abundant in the earth&apos;s crust as manganese.

THE use of minute boron additions to steel has been given considerable attention in recent years. Comparisons made between boron-free and boron-containing heats of otherwise identical analysis have indicated, beyond a doubt, the potent effect of boron for increasing hardenability. The actual hardenability increase has been expressed as a multiplying factor, or in terms of the percentage of other alloying elements boron might replace, The present study presents the results of a systematic survey of. the use of boron as an addition to two types of alloyed steels and as a replacement for various percentages of molybdenum in these steels, Both cast and wrought steels of the two basic compositions were prepared. Molybdenum, because of its scarcity at the time the investigation was started, was selected as the element to be replaced by boron. Attention was also given to the effects of boron on other properties of the steels, particularly their notched-bar toughness, to investigate other advantages or limitations of this element as an alloy addition. EXPERIMENTAL WORK Steels Investigated The two basic compositions used in this survey of boron as a replacement for molybdenum are given in Table I. The cast steels were higher than the wrought steels in silicon content to improve the casting quality. [ ] Each of these base steels, both cast and wrought, was made with molybdenum contents of o, 0.10, 0.20, 0.30, or 0.40 per cent, the total comprising 20 steels. In addition, each of these 20 compositions . was prepared with boron additions in amounts of 0.0015, 0.003, and o,006 per cent as ferroboron; and in amounts of 0.002 and 0.005 per cent as two com¬mercial intensifier alloys, designated alloys A and B. The boron-treated steels totaled 100, and the entire series 120, Test Procedure Each steel was melted as an individual heat in a 50-lb., magnesia-lined induction furnace. Ingot iron scrap or mixtures of ingot iron and steel scrap were used for melting stock. Deoxidation was carried out in the furnace with o.10 per cent aluminum. The aluminum addition was

The Lucky Friday mine east of Mullan, Idaho, is an outstanding example of a property in the Coeur d’Alene district where a small and insignificant- appearing silver-lead-zinc vein at the surface has changed at depth into a large vein of great importance. The Lucky Friday vein has little if any surface expression and above the 1200 level the ore shoots are small and discontinuous. Between the 1200 level and 2450 level, the lowest developed level, the main ore shoot has shown remarkable improvement on each succeeding lower level, and today the mine is one of the major lead-silver producers in the Coeur d&apos;Alene district. History: The Lucky Friday property is on the north side of the South Fork of the Coeur d&apos;Alene River in sections 25, 26 and 35, T. 48 N., R. 5 E., Hunter mining district, Shoshone County, Idaho. This is about one mile east of the town of Mullan, which serves the eastern portion of the Coeur d&apos;Alene district. The southern part of the property is crossed by a branch line of the Northern Pacific Ry. and by U. S. Highway 10. This highway is the principal road crossing the panhandle of Idaho and connects the district with Spokane, Wash., on the west and Missoula, Mont., on the east. The main portal and surface plant of the Lucky Friday mine is at an elevation of 3365 ft, only a short distance above the valley floor and a few hundred feet from U. S. Highway 10, so the mine is readily accessible for year-round operation.

One of the most important questions that arises in ore estimation can be stated as follows: What is the error when one extends the grade of a sample to a certain volume? The theory of regionalized variables, with the concept of extension variance, provides a response to that crucial question for any kind of sample extended to any volume. For the usual "extensions" encountered in current mining practice, some simple results can be derived from that theory which was initiated by Dr. G. Matheron. These results have been applied to a stratiform lead-zinc deposit for which several estimations of grade, tonnage and related precision have been made for a series of grid sizes such as might be used in a progressive exploration program.

THE Premium Price Plan for copper, lead, and represent, the approach of the Office of Price Administration to the urgent of wartime problem of securing increased output of nonferrous metals. Some of the problems encountered in too operation of the Plan and the considerations which led to it?s adopt it will here he reviewed. The Plan provides for extra payment by the Metals Reserve Co., to mine operators who exceed established quotas of production. Producers are thus directly, compensated for the higher costs of working ores that are not commercial at the ceiling price, although the metal obtained from these ores is directed into regular channels of distribution at the established prices for copper, lead, and zinc. Higher-cost metal is thus available to fabricators and to the government agencies at the regular ceiling price and the dual objective of increased production and table pries is achieved.

TOP-SLICING was introduced in the Pachuca district in 1917 by T. C. Baker, at that time mine superintendent, of the Santa Gertrudis mine. There then existed 1200 ft. (365.7 m.) below the surface, lying between the fourteenth and eighteenth levels (a vertical distance of 108 meters) a block of ore having a length of 295 ft. (90 m.), and an average width of 82 ft. (25 m.) and dipping at an angle of 65°. This block lay in the hanging wall of the vein and consisted of highly altered and fractured andesite, cut through with mineralized quartz stringers. On the foot-wall side, 26 ft. (8 m.) of old filling, left by former operators, was of payable grade. Stoping therein was first undertaken by the square-set filling system, but because of the extremely heavy hanging wall and loose dry filling in the foot wall, all square setting had to be accompanied by spiling, which made the operation exceedingly slow and costly. A system of mining was sought that would eliminate the difficulties inherent to the square-set system in heavy ground and that at the same time would effect the desired economies in mining. After several years, top-slicing has met all the conditions most satisfactorily, so that when similar conditions presented themselves in El Bordo mine, this method was adopted with necessary modifications. El Bordo mine is operated by the Santa Gertrudis company, and is situated about two miles north of Pachuca. Because of the diversity of the orebodies, a number of different mining methods are in use, among them top-slicing.

The current ejyiciency of aluminum cells was derived from the metal produced over a period of time and the theoretical faradaic yield. The difference in the actual amount of aluminum in the cathode at the beginning and end of the period must be determined. The weight of aluminum in the cathode was calculated from the dilution of an added quantity of impurity metal. Use of multiple indicator metals, copper, manganese, and titanium, demonstrated that the weight of aluminum in cells can be determined to within 1 pct with routine but careful chemical analyses. Over intervals of the order of 30 days, current efficiencies reliable to within 1 pct can be obtained. INVESTIGATIONS beginning with those of Pearson and waddington ,&apos; through the most recent published work of Georgievskii,9-11 illustrate the direct relationship between the composition of the anode gas and the applicability of analysis of anode gases to the control of alumina reduction cells. McMinn12 noted the lack of an independent method for measuring cell production efficiency over the short term. There is no doubt that changes in the current efficiency are immediately reflected in the composition of anode gases. However, the accuracy of faradaic yields calculated from gas analyses depends upon the degree of interaction between primary anode gas and Carbon.6 A conventional industrial practice of obtaining long-term current efficiency for production units from mass balances and quantity of electricity is generally insensitive to the impact of planned control of any one or more of the influential reduction cell parameters such as temperature, alumina concentration, and mean interelectrode distance. Consequently, there is a real need in the aluminum industry for a procedure to obtain the absolute cell current efficiency over a short term—10 to 30 days—both for the calibration of values obtained from gas analysis6 and for evaluating the effect of controlling specific parameters in the reduction process. The amount of aluminum produced may be determined by considering the cathode pool as a reduction of an impurity metal in aluminum. Analyses over a period will show a decreasing concentration of the impurity due to the accumulation of aluminum solvent. The increase in aluminum inferred from analyses is the amount produced by the cell during the period. Combining weights of the cell aluminum in the cathode at the beginning and end of a specific period, weights of aluminum tapped and the quantity of electricity passed during the interval will yield the current efficiency. Smart,I3 Lange;4 Rempel,15 Beletskii and Mashovets,16 and winkhaus17 have used dilution techniques to determine aluminum inventory in alumina reduction cells. A technique for determining the weight of aluminum in production cells by addition of small amounts of copper to the aluminum cathode was described by smart.13 The precision in values of the aluminum reservoir through dilution of copper in the cathode ranged from about 1 to 3 pct depending upon the quantity of copper added in the range 0.2 to 0.01 wt pct, respectively. Because the method appears so direct and apparently simple, one would not anticipate difficulties in application to industrial cells. The objective of this study was to resolve this problem associated with the trace metal dilution technique for determining the amount of aluminum in a cell. The approach in evaluating trace metal dilution as a basic factor in determining the weight of aluminum in the cell reservoir, and the absolute current efficiency of the Hall-Heroult cell, was to dilute more than one trace metal in the aluminum cathode so that we could discriminate among complications arising from physical mixing, the possibility of separation of intermetallic compounds, loss of the added elements, and chemical detection. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS These experiments are not complex but require standardized procedures. The technique involves addition of the trace metals to the cathode, knowing when these metals are homogeneously distributed in the liquid cathode, timing of the sampling, employing accurate and precise analytical methods, using reliable procedures for monitoring the amount of electricity passed through the cell, and accurate weighing of aluminum removed from the cell during the particular period. More accurate results might be obtained if the increment in concentration of the added indicator metals were of the order of 0.1 to 0.2 wt pct. The method must be applicable to production units and, hence, the contamination of the aluminum minimized. For this reason, the concentration of trace metals in the cathode was kept below 0.07 wt pct and generally at 0.04 wt pct level. Trace quantities of copper, manganese, titanium, and silicon are already present in virgin aluminum and are suitable as additives from electrochemical and analytical points of view. Concentration of silicon is quite dependent upon the characteristics of the raw materials and was not used extensively in this work. Chemical Analyses. All instrumental analyses require calibration against an absolute technique such as a gravimetric, volumetric, or spectrophotometric method which represents the ultimate in sensitivity, precision, and accuracy. INTRODUCTION IT is well known that ferric. oxide, Fe.-,03, is paramagnetic, while magnetite, Fe304, is classed among the highly ferromagnetic substances. But magnetic data on oxides intermediate in composition between Fe-03 and Fe304 have been almost completely lacking. Fe203 and Fe304 form a solid-solution series, according to present evidence.&apos; In this series the properties change continuously from Fe203 toward Fe304, as the percentage of FeO increases from zero toward 31.03, which is the percentage in magnetite. It is possible that there is a break in the series near Fe304, but it has not yet been possible to establish the existence-of such a break experimentally. The occurrence of solid solution ill this series is shown by the dissociation pressure, or oxygen pressure in equilibrium with the oxides, which falls continuously over the range from Fe203 to Fe304. The oxygen-pressure curves at 1,100° and 1,200° are shown in Fig. 1. The existence of solid solution is also demonstrated by the continuous change in optical properties from Fe203 over to a composition containing about 18 per cent. FeO, at which point the opacity of the oxide becomes so great that it is im-possible to obtain measurements at higher percentages of ferrous iron. Natural oxides of iron intermediate in composition between Fe2O3 and Fe304 are much more common than is generally supposed. If a mineral oxide is not strongly attracted by a small hand magnet and if it gives a red streak, it is usually labeled "hematite." If it is strongly attracted by the hand magnet it is usually labeled "magnetite" without further tests. As we shall show later, oxides containing from 1 up to 31 per cent. FeO can be thus erroneously lumped together as "magnetite." It is a fact, nevertheless, that the great hulk of natural oxides of iron lie fairly near either Fe203 Or Fe304 in composition. This laboratory flow study covers propping agent transporl in horizontal fractures as influenced by the characteristics of the propping particles, fluid and fracture. Correlations are presented for the transport of particles, deposition and fingering through dunes. For particles moving individually, the article velocity in some cases may be low compared to the hulk average fluid velocity; in other cases, the particle velocity may exceed the bulk average fluid velocity. At high propping agent concentration or low fluid velocity, the likelihood of particle deposition and dune formation increases. Fingering and channeling accompany dune formation. Dune formation can be limited to the outer region of tile fracture by adjustment of pump rate, fluid viscosity and particle concentration. A method is presented by which pump rate and fluid vircosity may he selected to control dune formation for given propping agent concentrations. INTRODUCTION The area and flow capacity of a fracture predominantly control the stimulation derived from hydraulic fracturing. Generation of fracture area exposes the rock matrix to a flow channel; the flow capacity of the fracture controls the flow through the channel to the wellbore under a given pressure gradient. This paper pertains to an important factor that affects the flow capacity of a fracture: the transport of the propping particles in the fracturing during the hydraulic fracturing treatment. With a better understanding of particle transport, fracturing treatments may be designed to obtain more effective distribution of the propping agent. RELATED STUDIES In recent years, the approach to obtaining high fracture flow capacity has been partial monolayer propping. Three papers1-3 have dealt with various facets of this concept. However, in some papers dealing specifically with particle transport, the results generally indicate that packing the propping particles within a fracture is inevitable. In early work&apos; with a sand slurry flowing in a pie-shaped flow cell, qualitative results showed that particle deposition in a fracture during transport should be expected. In other studies"" correlations based on slurry flow in vertical linear flow cells showed particle deposition was primarily a function of fluid velocity. In a recent paper the rate of sand advance (movement of dunes) in a horizontal linear flow cell was discussed. Subsequently, a method was given for designing fracturing treatments, based on the extent of sand advance during a treatment. In this work, particles whose diameter was small relative to the fracture width (i.e., dl W< 0.2) were primarily considered. The particle transport approaches that of sand transport in a stream bed. The industry trend, however, has been to use larger size propping agents. That is, particles with diameters approaching fracture widths predicted by Perkins and Kern.&apos;&apos; This trend has led to generally better fracturing treatments with particle relative sizes in the range 0.2 <d/W < 1.0. In all of the particle transport studies previously cited, the fluid characteristics were discussed. However, little or no attention was given to the parzicle characteristics. In this study the particles. as well as the fluid and fracture, are considered. VARIABLES AFFECTING PARTICLE TRANSPORT In the exploratory work to set LIP a program for this study, it was noted that particles within a batch moved at different velocities in a horizontal linear flow cell. In some cases the particles moved independently. In others there was particle interference. Also, particle deposition and fluid fingering occurred in some cases (Fig. 1). As a result of observing the easily distinguishab&apos;le types of particle movement, the particle variables as well as the fluid variables were included. In addition, the fracture width was included because the fluid velocity profile surely must affect the movement of the larger particles differently than that of smaller particles. Particle variables were density, diameter (based on a sphere of equal volumetric displacement), long and short dimensions, drag coefficient and velocity. Fluid variables were density, viscosity, yield shear strength and velocity. Fracture variables were the width and the angle between the plane of flow and a horizontal plane. Two factors which may prove to be important were omitted because of the complexity resulting from the parameters cited above. These are the fracture-surface roughness and gross irregularities that cause changes in the direction of flow. EXPERIMENTAL EQUIPMENT AND PROCEDURE A linear parallel-plate flow cell (Fig. 2) was used in the study. Lucite plates 1 in. thick formed the test section and permitted a viewing section 11 ft long and 10 in. wide. Spacing between the plates was adjusted with shims to give fracture widths 1/36 to 1/2 in. The model could be tilted to an angle of 45" with the horizonltal plane. NECESSITY FOR PRICE FIXING DURING the latter part of 1916 and the early months of 1917, clue to war activities, there was a threatened shortage of coal which resulted in panic among consumers and a rush to obtain coal at once at any price. As a result of this insistent demand for immediate delivery, prices were bid up by the consumers to unprecedented heights; spot coal which had previously been selling at from $1.50 to 82 per ton was bid up to $5, $6, and, in exceptional cases, as high as $7.50 or more per ton. Then when the April, 1917, contract period arrived, contracts could be made only at prices ranging from $3 up to $5 and $6 per ton for the year&apos;s delivery. This condition caused such a demoralization of the business, and so much complaint, that some action to regulate prices was considered essential by the National Administration. LANE-PEABODY AGREEMENT In May, 1917, a committee under the chairmanship of F. S. Peabody, of Chicago, was appointed by the Council of National Defense, through Mr. Lane, to consider the whole question of bituminous coal. This committee, with the Secretary of the Interior, Mr. Lane, after numerous meetings and long negotiations with the operators throughout the country, announced on June 29 an agreement between the Committee and the producers, fixing a tentative maximum price for bituminous coal throughout the country at $3 per net ton f.o.b. mines, to which was added 25 c. for selling commission to wholesalers. This plan was based on the idea of fixing a maximum price, high enough to greatly-stimulate production, with the expectation that the laws of supply and demand would, with ample production, operate to maintain fair and just prices for coal throughout the country.

HE who enters a mining claim within an Indian reservation of the United States of America acquires no rights thereby, because of the fact that the lands within such Indian reservation are not a part of the public domain, and cannot be located or acquired as mineral land. However, where such an entry is authorized as to a particular reservation by an Act of Congress, such claims as may be entered under such authorization are thereby segregated from the reservation, and the Indian title is extinguished. Under the Choctaw Constitution, any citizen of that nation, in other words any Choctaw Indian, who discovered a coal mine, acquired an exclusive right to all coal within a radius of 1 mile. The laws of the Chickasaw nation provided for the formation of corporations to develop coal and other mines, with authority to contract with others to develop and work the mines. Under these laws, leases were made; but Congress subsequently abrogated all existing leases, prohibited all persons from receiving royalties from such mines, and provided that all coal within the nation should remain the common property of the tribes. Such leases are now expressly prohibited by an Act of Congress (32 United States Statutes at Large, 655). All leases of mineral lands upon Indian reservations must now be made under regulations promulgated by the Secretary of the Interior, and the royalties must be paid into the United States Treasury for the benefit of the tribes. In Canada the Indians have no rights to the royal mines and minerals, and the government can make no stipulation with the Indians which would affect the rights of the Province in which the lands are situated. Therefore, while it is true that under our present law no rights can be acquired to a mining claim within an Indian reservation, it seems to be fully within the authority of Congress to make laws, giving such rights to mineral locators as it may deem necessary or expedient.

IN the recently published book entitled "Man in a Chemical World," by A. Cressy Morrison, the several pages discussing explosives were included in the chapter on "Serving Industry." Such a classification is entirely correct, as blasting explosives function only as a tool for accomplishing certain useful work, a tool which is completely destroyed in one use. Explosives are so important to industry and to modern society, in fact, that it seems impossible to imagine the existence of civilized nations without access to commercial explosives as ready servants. Two main types of explosives are now in use, the low-velocity or deflagrating type, such as black powder, which is adapted for use in coal mining and other applications where a slow, heaving effect is desired, and high explosives of the dynamite type,

THE CHAIRMAN (M. L. REQUA, San Francisco, Cal.).-We have had in California a great deal of trouble from the breaking. off and collapsing of well casings from shifting sand, and it is quite true with us as indicated in the paper, that no casing has been found sufficiently strong to withstand that. I know of wells in which casing that has not been in the hole over 2 or 3 days has collapsed and when that casing has, been pulled out it has been just as flat as your hand. I am also familiar with swelling bed rock in the gold drift mining ground of California. It does swell and keeps on swelling and never seems to stop. Just as long as tunnels are kept open in that kind of material there has to be a gang going through the tunnel constantly cutting out and easing up. They have put in timbers 24 in. in diameter in an effort to hold that kind of ground and it has always filled. The only way to succeed is to keep a gang of men busy all the time cutting out and easing down as it squeezes in. C. NARAMORE, Washington, D. C.-My experience has been very similar to yours in, the same field in the matter of breaking off of casing. I had charge of one well, in which I put in reënforced casing, anchored it in place and got 1 day&apos;s production, 150 bbl., out of it. The following morning my lease foreman telephoned that it had broken off. I thought at that time we would have more evidence, so I drove out to the well without ordering a new shoe joint. It had been customary to merely start from town with a new shoe joint, pull the pipe, take off the crooked bottom joint, start the casing back and sometimes never touch any iron (lost casing)- when redrilling the well. THIS article presets a view of a problem encountered in petroleum refining in the deterioration of equipment used in condensation of vapors and cooling of liquids. Discussion is limited to the problems of shell- and tube-type exchangers and condensers. In this service shell- and .tube-type equipment is gradually displacing other types and, for this reason, its economic importance ill oil-refining practice is also increasing. Considering oil - refinery practice during the last two decades one can readily see many important improvements in the apparatus used. Briefly, the present equipment is safer, more efficient, and Ignore economical. Improvement in apparatus used for the condensation of distillates has, in my opinion, been less than that in other essential distilling apparatus. So it is hoped that this discussion will stimulate research among the producers as well as among the consumers of this equipment with a view to ameliorating this condition.

On the basis of limited experimental work conducted at the Port Pirie smelter, it would appear that, by increasing the specific surface of sinter, and possibly that of coke as well, a marked increase in the rate and degree of sinter reduction in the furnace shaft can be achieved. Fusion-point tests have shown that this increased reduction means a much higher sinter fusion point and narrower plastic zone, while the more efficient utilization of coke in the furnace is inherent in the intensification of reduction by the provision of a more reactive sinter surface. Investigations aimed at increasing the ability to operate the blast furnace with a higher lead tenor of sinter reducing fuel cost proportionately, and at eliminating the loss in reduction potential in coke entering the furnace, as shown by the presence of appreciable proportions of CO in the top gases, are reported. Several lines for future investigations that could result in improved smelting methods are proposed. A SOMEWHAT informal presentation of ideas on lead blast-furnace smelting will be given in this paper. These ideas have been developed during observations of furnace behavior at Port Pirie and earlier at Mt. Isa, and have been guided by the results of laboratory experiments at Port Pirie. The authors do not intend to propound any particularly new theories, but present their ideas as a basis for discussion which may help toward a better understanding and improved control of blast-furnace operation. Performance variations of considerable magnitude occur from time to time at most lead blast-furnace plants. While Port Pirie is fortunate in having a very regular supply of high grade concentrates, it is no exception in this respect. Such irregularities are of considerable economic importance and they constitute a challenge to present-day metallurgists in their efforts to obtain an ever greater degree of control over furnace operation. In operating as Port Pirie does with a relatively high lead charge, it has been recognized for a long time that shaft conditions are ,of the greatest importance. A practical, or engineering, attack on the problem of accretions consisted of changes in furnace design, e.g., by widening the shaft to 10 ft above the bottom row of tuyeres, and by the provision of curved ends and vertical walls.&apos; That this attack has had a great measure of success is shown by the fact that barring down of these wide furnaces is rarely necessary, shaft conditions have greatly improved, and sensitivity to charge variations has been markedly reduced. These modifications, followed by some metallurgical changes (chiefly the incorporation of pig iron into the furnace charge in 1948), have brought furnace operation to a point where some variables which were previously masked can now be studied. Accordingly, over different periods of time during the last five years, such variables as could be given numerical values have been recorded and subjected to statistical examination. The objectives of this work were: 1—to reveal the true importance of the different variables and 2—to show the proportion of total furnace variation which is unexplained and therefore referable to causes not measured at present? e.g., shaft accretions, sinter structure, coke structure, and others. The building of reverberatory furnaces (Fortschaufelungsofen) where ordinary brick, fire-brick and iron are comparatively cheap, is quite a different matter from the building of such furnaces in isolated camps, where proper material is only to be obtained at high cost and with long delays. Time is always a large factor in metallurgical operations, and the metallurgist may find himself in a position where it becomes necessary to erect apparatus and have it running in less time than it would take to obtain material from outside. It is here that he must make use of makeshifts. In Mexico, one of the most important of these is the alluseful adobe. Employed from prehistoric times, it still has its sphere of application in a surprisingly large number of instances requiring an article that can be quickly and cheaply produced. It is quite possible to erect serviceable reverberatory furnaces with no other materials than adobes, stone and wood. The old Mexican smelting shaft-furnace was an example of what can be done with adobes, and the large number of ruins of this class of furnace scattered through the mining districts of Mexico are silent testimony to the genius of a people who demonstrated their capability of adapting material at hand to their needs. The present paper will describe briefly the construction of an adobe reverberatory furnace which is giving good results, can be quickly erected at a low cost, and, if properly built and handled, will last a long time. The material being simply sun-dried, it naturally follows that the construction must be quite heavy. The adobes should be evenly made, with just sufficient straw to hold them together, and not too large in size (9 in. wide, 18 in. long and 4 in. thick

During the middle 1880&apos;s, shortly after the discovery of silver-lead ores in the Coeur d&apos;Alene district of northern Idaho, it became apparent that concentration of the ores would be necessary to obtain a profitable product. Too much siliceous material was present for direct smelting, and the majority of the ores found at depth were too low in metallic content for economic smelting processes at the time. As the ores occurred in quartzite shear zones with siderite and quartz gangue, a large quantity of waste material was present in all the mines. As the galena was not finely disseminated, this made possible relatively good extraction of the argentiferous galena by coarse concentration. The first concentrators consisted mainly of coarse crushing, screening and jigging, principally by Harz jigs, the slimes being treated on buddles. Later Wilfley tables took the place of sand jigs and vanners superseded the buddles. Because of the marketing conditions, no attempt was made until 1900 to effect a recovery on the zinc minerals present, which were found associated in varying amounts with the galena. All through this period, the greater part of the production was obtained from mines containing ore assaying high in lead and low in zinc. Parts of some ore bodies would be reversed in this respect, so that ores high in zinc were left intact. During the decade after 1910, several important mines, The Success and The Interstate Callahan, containing ores high in zinc, were put into operation and were a material aid in the needed zinc production during World War I. Gravity concentration by jigs and tables was used during this period, with bulk flotation increasing in popularity for the treatment of the fine material that had already been treated by ordinary slime concentrating machinery. No extra fine grinding for flotation concentration was thought profitable at the time. Tailings Discharged into Streams From the start of mining and milling operations in this district until 1904, no attempt was made by the various mills in the upper district to impound or stack their tailings. They discharged them directly into the adjacent creeks or streams, to be carried away by high water. The Bunker Hill and Sullivan and the Last Chance mines, both in the relatively flat valley of the district, stacked huge piles of the coarse jig tailings on the near-by river bottom. Rain and snowfall are heavy in the Coeur d&apos;Alene district, as it is on the heavily timbered Pacific slope of the Bitter Root Mountains.
